Every day our Emergency Department moves into action to assess and treat patients with complaints of chest pain and shortness of breath.

Heart attack, lung attack and stroke devastates the lives of patients and those who love them. According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation 1 in 3 Canadians will die from heart disease and stroke and many more live with its effects.

The total population in the Comox Valley is expected to increase 32.2% by 2030, while, within the same timeframe, the population of 75+ years is expected to increase 92.8%. With a growing population and aging demographic, heart and lung disease is on the rise.

Fortunately, today there are many innovative treatments and medical testing to help patients in preventing, diagnosing and treating heart attacks and strokes.

“Having the new Cardio/Pulmonary Services and the latest cardiac equipment to treat patients is critical to providing great care and saving lives,” explained Jane Murphy, President/CEO of St. Joseph’s General Hospital. “St. Joseph’s must continually update the equipment and technology to ensure that the people of the Comox Valley receive the very best care today and through the transition to the new hospital.”

St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation has pledged $185,000 to purchase the new technology needed to enhance patient care. We are within $80,000 of the goal!

With your support we can reach this goal and ensure this new equipment will be available for patients today when they need it most now and into the future.

The new equipment will allow the Cardio/ Pulmonary medical team at St. Joseph’s to reach a new level of technology in diagnosis and monitoring.

The new stress test machines will be located in the new Cardio Pulmonary Services that just opened at St. Joseph’s. This new department is part of the space management initiative supported by Island Health and Comox Strathcona Regional Hospital District and St. Joseph’s Hospital. The initiative is a proactive approach to help support the growing needs in healthcare now as we transition to the new Comox Valley Hospital in 2017.

A Community that Expansion of the Cancer Care Unit

Was completed April 2015. The new space will accommodate five treatment areas, a patient center area and room for the additional equipment.

These changes will ensure sustainable healthcare in the area of cancer support is available for our loved ones for the next 4 years until cancer diagnostic and treatment moves to the new Island Health Comox Valley Hospital in 2017. The renovation and new equipment was needed to address the growing need for services. In 2007 when the unit was built St. Joseph’s had 1408 cancer care patient visits. Last year this number grew to over 4600.

The equipment needed will be available to transfer to the new Hospital.

St. Joseph’s/Hospice at the Views Opening July 2015 - The Residential Hospice will be a place where those who are dying receive compassionate end of life care in a private and comfortable home like setting. This renovation to The Views will accommodate 4 private rooms as well as a warm and inviting space for families.

The St. Joseph’s/Hospice at the Views will have a separate entrance and a lovely outdoor deck that will be accessible from all the rooms. Most importantly, people will be cared for by specially trained staff to meet the medical, emotional and spiritual needs of the person that is dying, their family members and loved ones. It is important that we acknowledge and recognize the contributions of so many – the Hospice Society; Island Health; Ministry of Health; St. Joseph’s Hospital; St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation; the individuals, churches, organizations and businesses within our community; and the Diocese of the Catholic Church who have permitted this Palliative/Hospice facility to be built on land connected to The Views.

Melvin Thomas was a doer, a planner, worker, churchman, caregiver, teacher and master chef. Melvin, better known as Mel, was a loyal man; loyal to his church, his friends, to his students and especially to his dear wife Frances during their life together. When Mel committed to a task he accepted it whole heartedly whether it was making pies for the church bazaar, welcoming folks at church, gardening or cooking meals for Frances who was a brittle diabetic. The result would always show his careful touch. Mel’s’ wife Frances passed away in August, 2012. Mel passed away in September 2013. Both Mel and Frances received family support from Frances’ broth-

Mel served on the D.E.W. Line as a chef in the camps during the 1950’s before taking up permanent residence later on in the Comox Valley. It was here, at G.P. Vanier High School where he settled into what truly motivated him; a passion for cooking and teaching others. Although Mel and Frances had no children, as a teacher at Vanier, Mel invested in his students as if they were his own, with conviction and dedication.

Mel and Frances Thomas up a kinship with Mel in the church sound booth. “He was so quiet yet obviously centered with the church,” commented Cal. “He only revealed a small part of himself until we found a common ground.”

That common ground was investments.

Cal had a career in the financial industry, which later proved resourceful for Mel. Over the years, Mel had developed a sizeable portfolio through investments. As his friendship with Cal grew so did his trust in him. He asked Cal to be executor for his and Frances’ wills. As in life, the quiet generosity so characteristic of Mel continued to shine in his passing. Mel and Frances bequeathed all their wealth to the areas in life that mattered dearly: the church and health care.

Every day our Emergency Department moves into action to assess and treat patients with complaints of chest pain and shortness of breath.

Heart attack, lung attack and stroke devastates the lives of patients and those who love them. According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation 1 in 3 Canadians will die from heart disease and stroke and many more live with its effects.

The total population in the Comox Valley is expected to increase 32.2% by 2030, while, within the same timeframe, the population of 75+ years is expected to increase 92.8%. With a growing population and aging demographic, heart and lung disease is on the rise.

Fortunately, today there are many innovative treatments and medical testing to help patients in preventing, diagnosing and treating heart attacks and strokes.

“Having the new Cardio/Pulmonary Services and the latest cardiac equipment to treat patients is critical to providing great care and saving lives,” explained Jane Murphy, President/CEO of St. Joseph’s General Hospital. “St. Joseph’s must continually update the equipment and technology to ensure that the people of the Comox Valley receive the very best care today and through the transition to the new hospital.”

St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation has pledged $185,000 to purchase the new technology needed to enhance patient care. We are within $80,000 of the goal!

With your support we can reach this goal and ensure this new equipment will be available for patients today when they need it most now and into the future.

The new equipment will allow the Cardio/ Pulmonary medical team at St. Joseph’s to reach a new level of technology in diagnosis and monitoring.

The new stress test machines will be located in the new Cardio Pulmonary Services that just opened at St. Joseph’s. This new department is part of the space management initiative supported by Island Health and Comox Strathcona Regional Hospital District and St. Joseph’s Hospital. The initiative is a proactive approach to help support the growing needs in healthcare now as we transition to the new Comox Valley Hospital in 2017.
