Baby Emmett is set to get a new liver next week.

Emmett Smith, now nearly six months old, was diagnosed with a rare liver cancer about four months ago.

His father, Michael Smith from Carcross, has been matched as a donor.

Emmett’s parents got the news on Monday afternoon. “We were freaking out and all happy, and Emmett was just sitting there with this strange look, like ‘What’s going on?’� said mom Charlotte Francis, on the phone

The surgery is scheduled for this coming Monday.

It will last six hours for Michael, and eight hours for Emmett, said Francis.

Michael will have his gall bladder and a piece of his liver removed, and Emmett will have his entire liver removed and replaced with his father’s tissue.

Michael’s liver is expected to regrow.

Francis was also tested as a potential donor, but the size of her organ and placement of her blood vessels turned out not to be a good match, she said.

They are hopeful for a positive outcome for both father and son. “There’s risks with everything, though right? Walking past the street is a risk. But I’m trying not to look at all that stuff and just staying positive. Same with Mike, because otherwise we’ll just be freaking out even more.�

The crash happened Sunday afternoon near the intersection of Hamilton Boulevard and Falcon Drive.

According to police, the motorcycle was travelling south on Hamilton Boulevard towards the Hamilton Extension when it collided with the truck making a left turn from Falcon Drive.

Alcohol is not a factor in this case, police say.

The driver of the truck was not injured.

Secret fracking deal won’t cut it: Kaska group Jacqueline Ronson News Reporter

A

group of Kaska people say they are being ignored by the Yukon government and their own First Nation leadership on the question of fracking.

Close to 100 people gathered in front of the legislative assembly on Monday to hear from Liard First Nation members and demonstrate their opposition to hydraulic fracturing.

“We remind the premier that aboriginal rights are a collective right not held by our titular leadership,” said LFN member Alfred Chief, reading from a letter signed by a new group that has called itself Kaska Concerned About Land Protection and Good Government.

“If you are planning a backroom deal with our current leadership – we have not been consulted or accommodated by them either.”

George Morgan, who ran for chief but lost to Daniel Morris in 2013 and was briefly the First Nation’s executive director after that, is the chair of the new association.

The Yukon government announced last month that it will allow applications for fracking to take place in the Liard basin, in the territory’s southeast corner.

Currently there are no proposals from industry to do that, although EFLO Energy Inc. has indicated its intention to do so within the next five to 10 years.

The government has said that fracking will only proceed with the support of First Nations with traditional territory in the area.

It has committed to begin discussions with six First Nations from Yukon, B.C. and N.W.T. about the possibility of fracking in the Liard basin.

The government has also begun reconciliation talks with unsigned Yukon First Nations, including the Liard First Nation and the Ross River Dena Council.

Very little information has been made public about the substance of these negotiations.

The NDP Official Opposition has suggested that the talks are more about securing approval for hydraulic fracturing than reconciling with First Nations.

“Is the reconciliation agreement the premier’s way to seek to get the green light to frack southeast Yukon?” asked NDP Leader Liz Hanson in the legislature on Monday.

“What I will say about the reconciliation is that we don’t negotiate in the media or on the floor of this legislative assembly,” said Premier Darrell Pasloski on Monday. “We will continue to work with the Kaska people.”

LFN Chief Daniel Morris, who has avoided a public profile since his election in late 2013, did not respond to a request for comment on this story.

lors of Liard First Nation to let them know we’ve got concerns, and to let them know that we want to be heard, we want to be met with,” said LFN member Rose Caesar at the rally on Monday.

She said she worries about the consequences of fracking on the water and the land.

“It’s pretty dangerous. It’s pretty scary. Especially when I grew up on the land, I live off the land, I travel all over the land, and you think I want to give up that right?

You think I want to give that kind of future for my grandchildren?

Certainly not.”

Meanwhile the Whitehorse liquefied natural gas power plant is set to begin burning fuel next month.

LNG, produced from a mix of fracked and conventional wells, will be shipped to the facility within the next few weeks.

The Kwanlin Dun First Nation signed an agreement with the Yukon government that will allow it to invest in the project up to 50 per cent ownership.

Chief Doris Bill was not available for an interview this week, but told CBC News last week that her First Nation still opposes hydraulic fracturing on Kwanlin Dun land.

about a month ago, saying that by 2030 the demand for water in our world will outstrip supply by 40 per cent. It’s really hard to get your mind around what that could possibly mean, until you’ve been to communities in the world that have run out of water, and literally are desperate. We have water refugees around the world.

“When we see a government

prepared to frack water … it is just shocking to me,” she said.

“We here in Canada are blessed with more water than most, although we don’t have all the water our politicians think we do.

We used to be told we had 20 per cent of the world’s water – well that’s only if we were to drain every river and lake. We have about 6.5 per cent of the available fresh

water but we are not honouring it and we are not taking care of it.”

She urged the Yukon not to go down the fracking path. “I beg you, don’t start it,” she said.

“Fall on your knees in gratitude that we have the water in this country, but it gives us a special responsibility.”

Pelly Crossing man who died of exposure on the street in Whitehorse was not being properly monitored by those responsible for taking care of him, according to Yukon’s coroner.

Robin Sam, 33, was found dead on the south side of Two Mile Hill on Jan. 13, 2014. He died of hypothermia.

The temperature in the days leading up to his death hovered between -10 and -26 C, according to chief coroner Kirsten Macdonald’s report.

Sam was found not criminally responsible by reason of a mental disorder after pleading guilty to an assault in 2010.

A 2010 territorial court decision describes “significant cognitive limitations, likely resulting from a number of causes.�

He had possible FASD, and a severe beating when he was 16 likely caused a seizure disorder.

Since pleading guilty in court, Sam’s case was being handled by the Yukon Review Board.

He’d been allowed to live in the community, on conditions, and had to regularly check in with the board.

Since he started being seen by the board, a team of people, led by the director of social services, was supposed to come up with a plan to help Sam with treatment, rehabilitation and education.

The plan was supposed to address Sam’s medical and psychological needs, including his seizure

disorder and the medication associated with it. The actual details of what that plan looked like are not public. No one from the Department of Health and Social Services is talking about it, citing privacy concerns.

The plan called for social services staff to consult with the Northern Tutchone Tribal Council’s director while Sam lived in Pelly Crossing.

The council’s director had primary responsibility for monitoring Sam day-to-day, according to the most recent board report in 2013.

If this treatment team became aware that Sam was not taking his medication, they were required to immediately notify everyone involved, as well as the board. Yet, according to the coroner’s report, this didn’t happen.

When the review board’s 2013 report was prepared, it appeared that Sam was doing well. “Although there are significant issues regarding Mr. Sam’s capacity, he has enjoyed an excellent level of support in the community and has responded well to those supports,� the report noted.

In January 2014, three days before his death, Sam was back in Whitehorse for another annual hearing.

According to Macdonald’s report, he was disoriented, frightened, moaning, rocking back and forth and clenching his fists when he appeared before the board.

He left the hearing not long after it started, which is not uncommon in review board hearings, and could not be found afterwards.

In her investigation, Macdonald found that Sam was not taking his medication as directed. Support workers and medical professionals knew about it, but no one imme-

diately told the board, as they were required to do.

He had multiple seizures that required hospitalization in October 2013. “In October 2013 it was clearly documented that Mr. Sam was not taking his medication as directed.

Mr. Sam also told his support workers that he was not taking his medication,� Macdonald wrote.

No one ensured that Sam was checked on daily, she says. “No one ensured that the monthly blood levels of the anti-seizure medication was performed.�

The pathologist who examined the body called Sam’s seizure disorder a contributing factor to his death. “A generalized seizure disorder, when symptomatic and not well controlled, can predispose one to, or impair one’s ability to escape from, life threatening environments/situations such as exposure to cold weather,� Macdonald wrote.

She recommends that the health department, if it is involved with a review board case, ensure that all conditions are vigorously monitored and implement a process to make sure that’s happening.

No one from the department would agree to be interviewed about what happened to Sam. “The department hasn’t completed discussions with the coroner regarding the report, but we can confirm that we have accepted her recommendations,� said spokesperson Marcelle Dube in an email. “We are not in a position to discuss personal, case-related matters.

We never discuss individuals and their cases, to protect their privacy.�

Police emergency response team called to Watson Lake

When officers got to the house, a 19-year-old suspect had fled, according to a news release.

As police were looking for the man they got a second call, at 9:30 a.m., reporting that the same suspect had just stolen a car on Nahanni Avenue and had fled with a long-barreled rifle.

About two and a half hours later the stolen vehicle was located in a rural area just outside of Watson Lake. “Due to the involvement of a weapon and potential dangers associated, the ‘M’ Division Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Police Dog Service were flown by the RCMP aircraft to Watson Lake to assist,� the release said. “Shortly before 5:00 p.m. the suspect was taken into custody without incident while still in possession of a loaded firearm.�

The incidents are still under investigation, police say. The man faces numerous Criminal Code and Firearms Act charges. He was scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

Mayor Curtis defends sports complex decision ‘I feel quite frankly the past couple weeks like I’m the leader of the Opposition.’

n a heated speech that topped 15 minutes at Monday evening’s council meeting, Whitehorse Mayor Dan Curtis lashed out at the Yukon Party leaders who accused him of single-handedly vetoing the outdoor sports complex.

Community Services Minister Currie Dixon and Yukon Premier Darrell Pasloski were both on the receiving end of Curtis’s remarks.

“To suggest that I was the deciding vote is not accurate, not true, not factual,” Curtis said.

“I’m really perplexed that this kind of garbage would come forward from that level of government – it’s very disappointing and I would expect better from my premier and my government.”

Last week, council members voted against a zoning amendment bylaw that would have given the Yukon government permission to build two artificial turf fields, a rubberized track and bleachers on a four-hectare parcel of land in Whistle Bend.

Curtis, who was sick at home and participating in that meeting by phone, was the last to cast a vote, resulting in a 3-3 tie that defeated the bylaw.

A letter from the Yukon Party caucus on April 28 stated that Curtis had cast the deciding “nay” vote.

“There are six of us and each one of our votes is a deciding vote,” Curtis said.

“I’m not the decision maker and to say that I am is giving me more power than I actually have. I

understand that our minister has been at the file for just over two months – I’ve been the mayor of a municipal government for two and a half years.

“It takes some time to fully understand municipal process

and I will continue to support the minister’s learning curve.”

City council has expressed concern that the city may end up being on the hook for paying the cost of operating the proposed facility. Dixon has offered assur-

ances the territory will cover these costs, but councillors worry future governments may not hold up this commitment. Doubts have also been expressed about the business plan prepared by the new group that would operate the facility.

Some councillors are also against the idea of fencing off the facility and not making it available to the general public.

Curtis said he was looking forward to meeting Dixon on Thursday, where he plans on emphasizing the importance of municipal authority and how to gauge public support through the Municipal Act. The mayor also took offence to comments Pasloski reportedly made on the radio last week.

Curtis read out a transcript of an interview between Pasloski and a local reporter, in which the premier stated that if the city wasn’t amenable to the idea of a sports complex, the next council might be.

“Premier Pasloski, I have nothing but respect for you, but I’d like to suggest that if you’d like to run for municipal government, I suggest you run for municipal government,” Curtis said.

“It’s totally inappropriate to be working through the media to try to address concerns that he may have. I feel quite frankly the past couple weeks like I’m the leader of the Opposition.

“It’s inappropriate to suggest that a new council should be brought in.”

Towards the end of the speech, Curtis said that if doing what he believes is best for the citizens of Whitehorse means he is to become a one-term mayor, “then so be it.”

“I am running again, but I won’t be intimidated or do things that I don’t think is appropriate.”

The territory has also had failed experiments in large-scale biomass fuel in the past.

A furnace designed to eat wood, garbage and just about anything else at Yukon College was installed in 1988 but never really worked right, and was decommissioned.

A furnace at Elijah Smith Elementary School that could burn both oil and wood suffered the same fate.

Shane Andre, director of Yukon’s energy branch, said the technology has improved vastly since then.

“There are a lot of legacy-type biomass projects that were tried in the past. There’s so many benefits to biomass technology, that throughout history we’ve dabbled in this space. But I think right now we’re coming into an era where the technology is really good.”

The government expects to try more pilot projects with new infrastructure, although it has not committed to any building in particular at this point, he said.

The draft strategy proposes that the government also continue to provide rebates for Yukoners who buy efficient wood furnaces for their homes that burn logs, chips or pellets.

It also proposes to facilitate the development of the local wood product industry, and ensure that forests are harvested sustainably.

“I think our forest management branch has done really an excellent job of working with communities and First Nations to develop forest management plans,” said Andre.

“We have such a huge forest resource that we really take advantage of a very small component of right now. It’s like 0.002 per cent of our forest resource that we currently harvest for biomass production.”

That’s just a tenth of what burns naturally through forest fires each year, he said.

There will be two small changes to the service, which were designed to allow the society to collect more revenue from the paper products that are recycled.

Upon the re-opening, newspaper will be recycled separately, and boxboard and brown paper bags will be mixed in with cardboard.

The drop-off bins have been shuttered since October, when

the society said it could no longer afford to subsidize the recycling of unprofitable materials.

Raven made the decision to re-open last month, after both the Yukon government and the City of Whitehorse pitched in with short-term funding boosts and help getting rid of stockpiled paper and plastics.

Skateboarders cheer potential park move Myles Dolphin News Reporter

H

aving the francophone school board select the site of Riverdale’s skate park for its future high school is serendipitous, according to Skate for Life Alliance’s Simon Gormley. “It’s fantastic news for us,� he said Monday.

For almost two years, the group has been trying to raise enough money to improve the Second Haven Skatepark.

Built in 1995, the park is outdated and doesn’t cater to the growing number of scooter users, he said.

Last week, the school board announced its preference for a high school on that site. It was the only option offered by the Yukon government that would allow for a standalone school.

Gormley said ministers Doug Graham and Scott Kent contacted him in early April to give him a heads up that the skate park might have to move. “I’ve been mostly in touch with Minister Kent because it’s his riding, and he’s been very helpful and receptive – probably one of the best helps we’ve had so far in this thing,� Gormley said.

Last week, Graham said that a new park would be built before the current one is torn down. “It’s simply not fair to cut them out of their facility and not have something else for them.�

When the group put a design together in September 2013, it stated that it wanted to see picnic tables, green spaces, washrooms and a water fountain at the facility.

Ideally, the new park would be about 10,000 square feet in size, Gormley said.

Max Melvin-McNutt, a Skate for Life member and multiple winner at Whitehorse’s Canada Day Skate Comp, said he’d like to see concrete used in the construction of the new park instead of asphalt. “Asphalt can be really rough when it wears out,� he said.

A new park would probably last 50 to 60 years, Gormley said.

• If every time you donate a can of beans to the food bank you think: “there must be something more that can be done,” then we must agree that people have the right to make a living wage and people who are on social assistance have the right to improve their lives.

We can implement a living wage policy or raise the minimum wage. We can increase the amount of money a person who receives social assistance can earn through part-time work without being penalized thus making social assistance a program of support rather than a program that keeps people in perpetual poverty. Let’s all ask our politicians to “make it so.”

then we must agree that the health of any individual affects the health of our community, and as a community, we’re only as healthy as our most vulnerable member. We need a mental health strategy for the community that includes: a number of treatment paths and options and reduced wait lists for mental health services. We need a broader range of addiction treatment programs – the 28-day treatment model fails many of the people who take the program and astoundingly still continues to be the gold standard for treatment. While we’re at it, let’s agree to include a managed alcohol program and sobering centre.

• If every time you get another “tax break” you wonder where the money is getting cut from – schools, roads, hospitals, social spending – then we must agree that tax breaks are eroding the overall health and well-being of members in our community and that the tax break rhetoric is serving only a

handful of us; small tax increases leads to healthier communities for all of us.

Finally, they asked: What does it take to help vulnerable people in Whitehorse? It will take a host of noble things that we have within us: collaboration at all levels of government, along with the non-profit and business sector; brave elected leaders willing to make really smart evidence-based decisions even if it makes them unpopular; delivery of a range of options (sorry, there really is no one single solution to wicked problems); the right to selfdetermination of vulnerable people; acceptance that some members of our community will always need supports while others may transition in and out of vulnerability; and adequate resources, both human and financial.

$150 million per year. In the last few years they have fallen to less than a third of that. In a small $2.2 billion economy, a $100 million decline in spending – most of which comes from outside – is going to have a significant impact.

And it is not as if territorial policies drove that decline in spending. Statistics Canada’s numbers show that exploration dollars have dried up across the country in the last few years, not just here in the Yukon. Decisions about whether such spending will be strong or weak in a particular year are made on Toronto’s Bay Street, not Whitehorse’s Second Avenue.

We Yukoners should thank our lucky stars that federal transfers have increased during that time frame or the effects of that decrease in spending would have been palpable. GDP is only one measure of the health of an economy, and on some other measures we’re doing alright.

Unemployment has been fairly steady and is actually down a little from 2013. So we’ve weathered that downturn fairly well.

The Yukon Party walked into Silver’s trap when it tried to take credit for the good times. It dug in deeper during the last few years when it made rosy eco-

nomic projections that haven’t panned out.

But the Liberals should tread carefully and not walk into the same trap. There may come a time when they won’t want the territory’s voters to believe the myth that the policies of the territorial government have much of an impact on the state of the economy – whether that time is when the economy comes roaring back to life just in time for an election, or when it dies down during the reign of a hypothetical future Liberal Party government.

The argument could backfire for another reason – in the longer term the Yukon has done fairly well.

The Liberals noted in a separate letter that the economies of N.W.T., Nunavut and B.C. all fared better in 2014 than Yukon, and invited voters to “ask (a Yukon Party MLA) about the latest GDP numbers.” I’m not sure that they want voters to do that.

While it is true that all had a better 2014, a longer view paints a different picture. With annual growth averaging 2.8 per cent since 2009, the Yukon has outpaced B.C. (1.8 per cent) and N.W.T. (whose economy has actually contracted slightly over that period). Nunavut, which is at

I figured that, since forever, these garbage containers have not had bear proof latches on them, it might be best to send my complaint directly to our newspapers in order to shame the powers to be, into doing something about it.

During a recent hike on the Chadburn Lake trails, I observed a garbage container with the lid open. So I checked it out and found nothing inside. A short distance away the black garbage bag was ripped apart with the contents strewn about.

I can only assume by the evidence that this was done by a bear, as the bag appeared to be torn out of the container.

My conclusion is we now have an educated bear who will become a dead bear.

As this garbage container, which was located to the left of the lakeside parking area, did not have a so-called bear proof latch, I decided to check all the sites along the Chadburn Lake Road.

The lakeside container was upside down with the back door (used to remove a full bag) opened and with a fire

started right on the lid. This could not be a bear, as they are not that stupid.

The container to the right where the shelter is did have a bear latch, but was not bolted down to the concrete pads.

Of the 10 or so containers, only two had a bear latch (the one at the Canyon Trail parking lot had a latch but the box was warped, making the latch inoperable); only one at the boat launch was bolted down; and most did not have concrete pads under them at all.

As bears have been a hot topic in the news lately, I would think it would be a wise decision to do something about it in the very near future.

If we can’t share a footbridge, we’re in trouble I would like to write and thank Coun. Mike Gladish for his willingness to speak up for compromise with respect to the Rotary Centennial Bridge.

I realize this is not a popular position to find oneself in.

Should the bridge be shared by pedestrians and offroad vehicle users? I have not really

followed all the arguments. I know that the decision has already been made by city council. I do, however, believe that there surely could have been a compromise reached so that everyone could share in some way the opportunities that the bridge offers.

Obviously I am in a minority, as is Coun. Gladish, and we are fortunate indeed to live in a country where we can be free to disagree with the majority.

Change happens all the time; nothing truly remains as it once was. Where my first home was built in Riverdale, almost 50 years ago, it was in the bush, on somebody’s hiking trail.

For certain I can say that I find the bridge and the trail so relaxing: the shared experiences with the gulls nesting, the eagles fishing, the beavers building and the foxes and coyotes searching for food. The tourists who head to the fish ladder and the locals who run, cycle, stroll, roller blade or walk their dogs adds another pleasant dimension to the walk.

I think that it was Charles Darwin who said, “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, not the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.”

It just seems to me that it

is difficult to envision world peace ever happening, when we here in Whitehorse can’t even find a workable compromise over a bridge. Seems so simple, but as I said in the beginning of my letter, I am not fully familiar with the whole situation and all the options. For now it is decided; what the future might bring may well be change.

If 2015 is a bad year, the closure of the Wolverine mine back in January – which wouldn’t have been factored into Statistics Canada’s most report – will probably play a significant role, as will the availability of dollars for mining exploration and any number of factors that are beyond our control. Court battles don’t help, but they are hardly the decisive factor as this statement implies.

Our politicians should refrain from taking credit when times are good but they shouldn’t point fingers when times are bad. You might end up being the one trying to steer this ship.

government by Nunavut Tunngavik Inc., the group that oversees the Nunavut land claim.

“There’s a lot of interest in the Arctic now and we have a large, untrained Inuit work force,” Cathy Towtongie, NTI president, said Monday. “We have to deal with that situation now.”

The land claim guaranteed that Inuit would hold the same percentage of jobs in the territorial government that they do in the general population – about 85 per cent. But they have never held close to that number. The level has been stuck at about 50 per cent for years.

A conciliator’s report concluded in 2005 that the reason has been Ottawa’s consistent underfunding of education in the territory. Retired justice Thomas Berger found that underfunding has resulted in graduates that are literate in neither English nor Inuktitut. He recommended a bilingual education program paid for through an extra

$20 million a year from the federal government.

NTI filed its lawsuit, claiming $1 billion in damages, after the report’s release. That was based on wages the group said the Inuit could have earned from their share of government jobs if they’d been educated well enough to fill them.

About $175 million of the settlement is to go into a fund to provide Inuit with necessary job skills. That money is to be controlled by NTI and the territorial government.

It could fund a repeat of a program to train Inuit lawyers, said Towtongie. It could also fund programs in the trades or in skills such as accounting. The federal government is to pay for a labour market analysis on what kind of training is needed.

The fund is not to be used to upgrade Nunavut’s overall education system.

“The hope is that this $175 million can be used to supplement

some things in the education system, but it’s not intended to replace the (territorial government’s) obligation,” Towtongie said.

The Nunavut government is separately pursuing more federal money to upgrade education and make it more bilingual, said culture and heritage deputy minister Joe Kunuk.

Kunuk said the territory is already implementing some measures to improve education in Inuktitut, such as standardizing curriculum and moving toward making the written language consistent.

Another $80 million is to go into a trust fund administered by NTI. It is to be used to fund anything from business development to social programs such as suicide prevention.

Ottawa has also promised another $50 million over eight years to fund further training programs. The agreement also includes promises of higher funding for wildlife management and planning organizations.

Over the course of several weeks in the spring of 1954, Legris drove across the country with two other members, stopping along the way to give talks and ask for supplies.

They collected cupboards, beds, mattresses and other furniture, which they packed on the back of a Chevrolet 1300 truck.

“The Alaska Highway wasn’t what it is today,” said close friend and former Maryhouse director Trudy Moessner.

“They were basically driving through dust the whole way.”

In Whitehorse, Legris lived in a home that had “quiet rooms” in the basement, also known as poustinias, where people from all walks of life could come and spend time away from the world.

It was like an oasis, according to Truska Gorrell.

“To visit Mamie at her home, a visitor could feel a sense of space, of entering a humble and loving world within the busy city of Whitehorse,” she wrote.

Evans and Gorrell both spent time in Legris’ home when they needed to recharge their spiritual batteries.

“I remember one young man, who Mamie and I both knew, who was struggling with addictions, the justice system and his family,” Gorrell wrote.

“Society had almost written him off but Mamie’s door was always open to him, she cared about him, she prayed for him and her loving care was always a support for him.”

Renee Alford first met Legris in 1955.

She remembers her as a warm, caring woman who contributed to the region by helping the poor and “showing what a lay apostle is called to do by her example and dedicated service to the parishioners.”

“She was my friend and I’m grateful for what she did for me and my family,” Alford wrote.

“But I was also inspired by what her vocation and work represented for the development of important new concepts in the life of the Catholic church.”

After 10 years in Whitehorse, Legris became a trusted member of Madonna House and was sent all over the world to scout and open mission homes.

She visited the West Indies, Israel, Peru and the Middle East, among other places, and always befriended local residents despite the language barrier.

For several years, they would often go on camping trips together.

They drove up the Dempster Highway and camped at Lapie Canyon near Ross River one summer.

Father Pierre Veyrat, a French Oblate priest who had accompanied them, shot a moose one day and Legris cooked up delicious steaks the same evening, Moessner said.

Legris would sleep in the back of their old silver GMC Suburban on a foam mattress, a space she called the ‘Hilton suite.’

“One night we were above the Arctic Circle, camping in a tent while Mamie was in the Hilton, and she said she’d been awake all night keeping guard for bears,” Moessner said.

LONDON illiam and Kate’s new daughter is the first British princess who won’t face royal discrimination because she’s a girl, but that doesn’t mean her life will be a fairy tale.

Thanks to a change in the centuries-old rules of royal succession, if Princess Charlotte has a younger brother, he won’t overtake her in line to the throne.

But in a world where girls are encouraged to embrace pretty-inpink princess imagery from birth, the royal daughter born Saturday is bound to face a level of scrutiny her elder sibling Prince George won’t have to worry about.

Claudia Joseph, author of William and Kate’s Britain, said that as a future king, third-in-line-to-thethrone George can expect a life of “duty and responsibility.”

His sister “will have a more carefree life, but on the other hand, we live in a world obsessed with looks.

Nearly every woman nowadays is constantly under scrutiny.”

The experience of Kate – and, even more, of the baby’s late grandmother, Princess Diana – suggests the level of interest the princess can expect. Every outfit, every hairstyle, will be recorded, commented on, copied. Even her name, announced Monday by her parents, was the subject of much speculation.

The royal birth was greeted with an explosion of pink, as Tower Bridge and other London landmarks were bathed in magenta light.

Not everyone was delighted.

“Are we really still in the 1950s with gender norms?” tweeted Laura Sheldon, a 16-year-old student.

“I don’t like the way the media are emphasizing the baby is a girl and companies exploiting this in their marketing,” Sheldon told the AP in an email. “The whole ‘pink for girls’ and ‘blue for boys’ thing is so outdated and too conservative for what should be a progressive society.”

While royal duty, celebrity, and questions of security will affect the princess’ career choices, there’s nothing to stop her from joining the military, as her father and uncle did, or becoming a search-and-rescue helicopter pilot like her dad.

“I think the royal family has changed a lot over the last few decades, and William and Kate are very 21st century,” Joseph said. William is a more engaged, hands-on parent than his father, Prince Charles, or ancestors.

“I’m sure (the princess) will inherit Kate’s evident love of photography and art. And she has an older brother – I’m sure she’s going to love ‘boys’ toys,’ too, and inherit some of her father’s loves.”

Layer upon layer of stuff is built up on each canvas, creating pieces with plenty to look at.

Walking through the show you find yourself resisting the urge to reach out and touch things – the dozens of gears and clock parts painstakingly adhered to one piece, the oversized industrial zipper weaving its way across another.

Each piece has between five and 20 layers, Church said. That means there’s always something to find if you look closely.

“It’s rewarding though. I had somebody buy a piece about three years ago, and she came up last week to me on the street and she said, ‘I just found something new in your piece.’

“That is amazing. That means people aren’t getting bored of them if they can still find something new.”

Each piece in this show includes some text. “Bring on the

Rain,” says one, where blue birds carry a rainbow of umbrellas in a very Seuss-like fashion.

“Show Your True Colours,” says another, which appears mostly blue at first glace, but has designs of peacock feathers drawn onto the background on closer inspection.

A woman pulls back a giant zipper to reveal a silver sky under the darkness in another piece. “There is Always a Silver Lining,” it says.

Each piece also features a different anonymous, faceless girl. Church said that people who buy her work usually see themselves in the girl or see the person they bought the piece for.

“Maybe she’s everywoman or maybe she’s a female spirit.”

Recently a friend suggested that each piece was actually a self-portrait.

Church says that’s not what she was going for, even though the friend might have a point.

“Certainly all the words and

images came out of me and they are things I would like to express and also to share, especially with other women, but with other people,” she said.

When she’s not creating art, Church works for the environmental group CPAWS and also teaches physical geography at Yukon College. She says being able to shift back and forth between the two sides of her brain allows her to do both things better.

Something like this show “really lets my imagination be as ridiculous as it wants to be. I don’t have to follow any rules,” she said.

I thought I had found the perfect solution to this, since I was getting a little peeved about the fact that most people know the time, expense and effort it takes me to set these events up — and yet still act like they are doing me a favor by attending. I sent out somewhat vague paper invitations (old-school, I know, right?) with instructions that once they RSVP’d to me, they would then be added to a page on Facebook that would give them all the information they needed to know.

I thought this couldn’t possibly fail. Except out of the 40 people I have invited to this birthday party of mine, which I am arranging, FIVE have already called me to say, “Yeah, put me down as going. Unless something else comes up that day. You know how it is.”

The first time someone said this, I thought they were joking and I laughed. The second time, I was astounded and couldn’t respond. The next three times, I was angry and said something along the lines of, “Well, it would mean a lot to me to have you attend, so please let me know ASAP if you change your mind.”

Is this a thing now? To accept offers to events until maybe something better comes along?

Or do I need new friends? I am appalled by the lack of manners here and would appreciate help on what to say if anyone else tells me “until something better comes along.”

GENTLE READER: By “a thing now,” Miss Manners trusts you mean that people are increasingly shameless about being rude, and by “old-school,” you are referring to timeless ways of showing consideration for others.

Perhaps you do need another set of friends. You may tell your current friends that you are sure something better will come along for them.

The Kelowna Judo Club (KLJ) and Yellowknife Judo (YKJ) had small teams, but neither left empty-handed. Kelowna’s Shyanne Stewart, who was one of two to make the trip, won a silver and Yellowknife’s only competitor Hunter Hadley also captured silver.

Northern Lights Judo and Shiroumakai Judo pinned the most medals. Both Whitehorse clubs collected 17 medals. However, Northern Lights (NLJ) won eight gold while Shiroumakai (SHK) took in seven.

The two clubs also took in numerous individual awards.

Northern Lights’ Jaymi Hinchey was named toughest female competitor and Shiroumakai’s Daniel Tonner was named toughest male.

Shiroumakai’s Emersyne Sias received an award for female sportsmanship and Northern Lights’ Alexander Kiriak got the corresponding male award.

Shiroumakai’s Rowen Kingston was named most improved male and teammate Cassi Jensen got the award for best throw by a female competitor.

As well, Mackenzie Bolduc, of Golden Horn Judo (GHJ), was named most improved female

and Gavin Mellon, of Anchorage’s Mountain View Judo (MVJ), was given best throw by a male.

A total of 61 competitors took part in the championship, down from the record of 86 set last year.

“As an organization, every year we fine-tune it,” said Jensen. “It’s a good development tournament.

This year our U12s are a good group and hopefully in two years they’ll all be U14s. We have a good group of younger kids and that’s what it’s all about.”

he Yukon Pinoy Basketball League wrapped up with a finger lickinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; good final on Sunday.

Team KFC captured their third title in four years in a thrilling 91-86 win over Usana at F.H. Collins Secondary School.

KFC was bolstered by strong outside shooting, increasingly tight defence and an enthusiastic cheering section, whose screams could shatter glass. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all about defence,â&#x20AC;? said KFC captain and coach Wren Agapito. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They know that defence wins games and defence wins championships. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what we did tonight and we stopped them every time they got the ball and our offence just followed with that.â&#x20AC;?

KFC opened the game with three-point sharpshooting.

Jonathan Labuguen notched nine points and James Labuguen six from beyond the arc in the first quarter.

But the Colonel Sanders squad won the fourth quarter with free throws. Tied 74-74, James sunk two from the line for 76-74 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; taking the lead for the last time â&#x20AC;&#x201C; before teammate Aaron Diaz hit four in a row in two separate trips to the freethrow line to make it 84-78. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They were in foul trouble â&#x20AC;Ś pretty much all of them had four (or) three fouls, so we had to go inside,â&#x20AC;? said Agapito. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The more we go inside, we can get fouls.â&#x20AC;?

It was the second medal won by the Huskies – a selects team made up of the top players from the Whitehorse rec league – this season.

“Last year we didn’t really have a chance to play together as a team, practice as we did all year this year, so all our practices and tournaments paid off in a huge way for the kids this year,” said Derek.

“We started our Huskies this year to be more of a team. That was the whole idea behind this thing, was getting back to this tournament this year and I think it paid off, for sure.”

The Huskies opened the tournament with an 11-3 win over the Okanagan All Stars.

Goalie Nigel Charlie then notched a shutout in a 15-0 thwacking of the Quesnel Red Dragons.

The Whitehorse squad dropped their next two. They lost 8-5 to the Chilliwack Jr. Chiefs and 4-3 to the Kelowna Red Heat,

Yukon College is inviting stipulated price bids for General Contractor services for the renovation of the Reception and Student Services areas of Ayamdigut Campus in Whitehorse Yukon.

The project includes the removal and realignment of walls, the installation of offices and a custom main reception desk, and related work. The project is due to be completed during the period June 1 to August 15, 2015.
