A Langley man who was sentenced to life in prison for the first degree murders of Marc Bontkes and Laura Lamoureux will be tried again for both crimes.

On Tuesday, May 5, the B.C. Court of Appeal granted Robert Bradshaw

a new trial.

Bradshaw — who was known as ‘Paulie’ — appealed his convictions, arguing that the trial judge erred by admitting into evidence a re-enactment of the crimes made by co-accused Roy Thielen.

After operating a weekly soup kitchen each Tuesday for the past 15 years, St. Joseph’s parish has announced that it will stop serving meals at the end of May. A weekly Saturday dropin has also been cancelled. The church is now considering how to restructure its outreach programs.

After 15 years of serving warm bowls of soup to Langley’s homeless, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church is closing its Tuesday soup kitchen and Saturday drop-in service.

Father Don Larson said the soup kitchen and the drop-in will end at the end of May. “Recently the soup kitchen organizers reviewed the outreach and decided changes are necessary. Food and clothing are no longer the primary needs of those we assist. Something more is required and so a new plan is to be developed,” said Father Larson.

A new pastor is taking over the church and he will look at how outreach will be delivered.

Larson admitted there have been some challenges with the soup kitchen, specifically with the homeless.

“The present outreach encourages transients to bring their carts onto the parish property on Tuesday mornings and some of them forget to leave at the end of the meal.

“Not infrequently, the homeless have set up small encampments and slept overnight around the parish hall. This has caused much annoyance to the neighbours, the City and also at times the priests who live on the property.”

Thielen pleaded guilty to both killings and is serving a life sentence.

The videotaped re-enactments, which were shown to the jury, implicated Bradshaw in both murders.

Thielen then refused to testify at the trial.

“The re-enactment was hearsay evidence that did

not demonstrate circumstantial guarantees of trustworthiness necessary to meet the threshold reliability test,” wrote Judge Elizabeth Bennett in her decision to grant Bradshaw a new trial.

The March, 2009 murders took place within five days of each other, and within a few blocks of one another in Langley City.

Bontkes was a drug user and Lamoureux was an addict and a dealer. At the time of the killings, dial-adope operations were popping up all over Langley, and a turf war was erupting.

After the killings, Thielen quickly emerged as a suspect and became the target of a “Mr. Big” investigation.

In May 2010, during a road trip between Edmonton and

Calgary, Thielen provided the undercover officer with a lengthy account of his involvement in the two murders. He said that he had been hired to kill both victims by a Langley drug dealer, and that he was the sole shooter.

He said he shot Lamoureux in the head and chest as she was walking down the street. Thielen told the

officer he killed Bontkes with the help of a close friend who he called a ‘sister’ — Michelle Motola.

Motola served six years for her part in Bontkes’ murder.

In undercover operations, Thielen said he was a killer for hire, and was nicknamed Dirty Deeds because he would kill for dirt cheap, claiming to have killed several people.

Frustrations exist on both sides of issue, says outreach worker

commitment to the community long before Gateway of Hope, before outreach existed, it was the faith community keeping the most vulnerable alive and healthy,” said Holland.

“It’s a shame they are talking about closing it down.”

He said the homeless also use the washroom at St. Joe’s to clean up and take care of basic hygiene.

“It’s also a place for them to sit and relax. They are always being moved around. There they can just relax,” he said.

He’s been hearing the frustration on both sides.

“People living on the streets are really feeling pushed out and are wondering where they belong,” said Holland. “But businesses have rights too, and if you are hurting a business that’s not fair either.”

Holland has some guesses as to why there is an increase in the visibility of the local homeless population.

Many spots where they used to camp have been developed.

Where the Mufford overpass is now was actually a popular spot

for camps. The Willoughby slope was also a popular spot.

“There are less places to camp that are close to the services, resulting in more shopping carts and more tents,” he said.

And there are a lot more eyes on the streets than before. Condos have replaced small bungalows across the street from St. Joseph’s.

“That’s a lot of eyes on the back of St. Joe’s, which means the City is going to get a lot more calls.”

While Gateway of Hope offers a daily lunch, serving hundreds of people every day, some homeless in the City don’t like the rules there, including not being able to bring multiple carts.

At a recent Saturday drop-in, more than 30 homeless people came in a two-hour period.

Sometimes they can get a haircut or a nurse is there to address medical issues.

Langley United Church offers a drop-in with food every Monday and Wednesday. But they are soon going to close for renovations.

A parishioner at St. Joe’s called The Times to say he doesn’t want the soup kitchen to close.

“The City is blaming the

church, when I don’t think we are the problem,” said the man who didn’t want to be named.

“We believe in being kind to your neighbour. Our mentality is to lend a helping hand those in need. I ask the City, is there a plan B for these people?”

Schaffer believes the soup kitchen is a necessary service in the community, not just for the homeless but those who are on a limited income or are new the community.

“I’m hoping the new pastor will find a way to make it work for everyone all around,” said Schaffer.

“This is a really caring community and there is a desire out there to make it better and to help those who need it,” he said.

“The whole region is being challenged with how to best help people who are homeless, but each municipality only has so many resources.”

The City hired a consultant to provide the homeless task force with suggestions of how to better use those resources, what is needed and an action plan.

Schaffer is hoping to hear from that consultant in the last week of May.

The number of Metro Vancouverites who have voted in the transit tax plebiscite is now pulling ahead of the voter turnout in last November’s municipal elections in most cities.

Elections BC has now received more than 600,000 ballots or 38 per cent of the 1.56 million packages it mailed out.

More than 550,000 ballots, or 35.3 per cent, have now gone through Elections BC’s initial screening process.

The count of screened ballots shows last November’s municipal election turnout has been surpassed in all major cities of the region except Surrey and Port Moody.

Most Metro cities recorded turnout in November of 25 to 32 per cent, with Vancouver at 37.6 per cent.

Surrey’s rate of ballots returned and screened is just under 30 per cent — the worst in the region — but even that city isn’t far behind its November election turnout rate of 31.5

More than a year after police raided a clandestine drug lab in Langley Township, a cleanup of the toxic chemicals that still contaminate the site has been ordered.

On Tuesday (May 5), Langley MLA and provincial Environment Minister Mary Polak announced a contractor will be hired to clean up the chemicals at 20668 72 Ave. starting later this month.

A press release from Polak said the property has been determined to be a “high-risk contaminated site” and may have contaminated three neighbouring properties as well.

The site was raided on April 24, 2014, by the Surrey RCMP drug section, the RCMP “E” Division clandestine lab unit and forensic identification section as well as an asset forfeiture team and other officers.

Andrew Slemko, a 38-year-old Surrey resident, was later charged with production of a controlled substance and possession for the purpose of trafficking. His trial has yet to begin.

In April of this year, almost a year to the day after the raid, resident Diana Sampson wrote The Times to complain that nothing has been done to clean up the “open toxic ditches and putrid brown sludge oozing” from the site.

Sampson said the leftover chemicals from the “huge ecstasy drug lab” have filled a neighbour’s house with chemical vapors, killed their koi fish, and caused the death of trees and bushes.

Testing of the properties near the site by the Surrey office of the ministry of environment has revealed “horrific” levels of contamination, Sampson said.

“It rains, the sludge comes, the smell comes and we are coughing,” Sampson wrote.

“We are at our wit’s end.”

The announcement by Polak said under the Environmental Management Act, the owner and tenant are responsible for the cost of cleaning up the site as well any neighbouring properties.

It said the ministry has made “repeated attempts” to get the owner and tenant responsible for the drug lab to complete the required remediation but they remain “in non-compliance.”

The kitchen is closing.

After 15 years, the Tuesday morning soup kitchen and a weekly drop-in for Langley’s homeless community at St. Joseph’s parish in downtown Langley City will be discontinued at the end of this month.

In a written statement, Father Don Larson said the soup kitchen has faced a number of challenges in recent years, specifically with a growing number of homeless people bringing shopping carts onto the church property and then hanging around, long after food service has ended, often setting up camps and spending the night.

These encampments have become “an annoyance” for the parish and the surrounding community, he said, adding that a new and creative approach to helping Langley’s homeless community will have to be found.

We can’t blame area residents or the local business community for wanting something to be done about the problem. After all, their lives and livelihoods are being negatively affected by the makeshift camps that have been popping up with increasing frequency underneath eaves and awnings in the downtown core.

Still, it was no doubt a difficult decision for the church, because the people running St. Joe’s soup kitchen have demonstrated, over the past decade and a half, that they have a generous spirit and loving hearts.

The volunteers who have given their time to prepare and serve food, to clean up after each meal and offer conversation to those who come each week, not just for a meal, but for a bit of companionship, deserve our thanks.

After they hang up their kettles for the final time, the parish plans to regroup and find another way to help the community’s homeless population.

No doubt they will do just that.

Meanwhile, the Salvation Army’s Gateway of Hope shelter will continue to provide food and shelter, in what has unfortunately become an all-too crucial service in Langley and across the Lower Mainland.

Perspective on pay they

For many people, raises have been few and far between since the 2008 economic downturn. So we sympathize with school superintendent Wendy Hyer’s desire for a pay raise and the Okanagan School board’s urge to reward their employee.

However, the optics of this raise leave much to be desired.

Just over $1 million had to be cut from this year’s school board budget, much the same as in previous years, as enrolment continues to decline.

School board chair Linda van Alphen may claim that Hyer’s raise only equates to a small part of their overall budget, but in other frames of reference, it’s quite a bit.

For instance, for a minimum wage earner, $17,000 is about two-thirds of their annual income. In terms of a classroom, it’s enough to upgrade a computer lab, or purchase 170 textbooks (based on $100 each).

But really, that is comparing apples and oranges. Yes, Hyer’s raise does take money that could be spent in the classroom, just as the teacher’s salary increases did — and let’s note here that Hyer did not secure her raise by holding the students’ education hostage and claiming it was for their own good.

But teachers are vital to the education of our children. To keep the best teachers in our system, rather than see them moving to other provinces or to the private sector, we need to pay them well.

Similarly, if we want good administration, we need to pay for it. Hyer should be paid a salary commensurate with her position and it should be comparable to her peers in other school districts.

Considering the size of the school district, both number of employees and students, Hyer’s job can be likened to running a good-sized corporation. And, good administrators, especially at this level are not a dime-a-dozen. Replacing Hyer would be far more costly than paying her a salary which she could obtain by relocating to another district or the private sector.

TransLink Remarks an attempt to shame women is, in fact, efficient Editor: Re: TransLink expansion all about building bureaucracy (The Times, May 1).

There are so many bogus claims in Eric Chris from Vancouver’s allegations, I will not bother rebutting them all. I’ll simply urge folks who read his letter, to Google Eric Chris Vancouver TransLink to see how much BS he’s been spreading in order to attempt to defeat a Yes vote — a vote that is critical to future generations and their lungs and health.

The fact is that at one time TransLink administration hovered around five per cent, but through restructuring and efficiency by 2012 it had been reduced to four per cent.

Further tightening and efficiency sees those costs making up closer to three per cent of total expenditures.

Another fact is that our ridership per capita is over three times higher than any other Canadian city, including Edmonton, Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto, and our ridership costs are far less than almost every large North American city, including New York, Boston, Chicago, Seattle and especially Los Angeles.

I will suggest from his pro-car stance that Chris is obviously a huge fan of personal automobile use, likely traveling solo much of the time, like most people in the Lower Mainland. That does not make him an authority on what is best for our region.

I have used transit and a bicycle exclusively since 2004, when I gave up the family Volvo which had been converted to LNG in 1989. I travel from the Derby Reach area to and from the rest of Vancouver including UBC frequently.

If you have not voted yet, perhaps get the facts, but don’t listen to well-composed fiction.

Editor: I have written a response to White Rock councillor David Chesney’s comments on pregnant women’s clothing choices.

As a lifetime Langley resident and the owner of businesses that focus on women’s issues, I felt it was my duty to respond to his comments: Mr. Chesney, how sad this story was for me to hear. Once again, someone in a position of power is misusing his voice to shame women.

And in case you are wondering what all the fuss is about over your radio interview — it’s about shame.

Shame is a common response when somebody is told that who they are — or what they look like — is bad or wrong. It puts pressure on someone to change

who they are in order to please another.

Because you made reference to pregnant women changing their appearance to suit your preferences, you, Mr. Chesney, have shamed women.

I am unsure why I have to give you a history lesson, but in order to clarify the uproar over your insensitive and ignorant words, I will.

For many years women’s bodies have been the subject of many a decency battle: • She should cover up her cleavage in the workplace; • She shouldn’t breastfeed in public; • Young girls should not wear yoga pants in schools.

Your opinion adds a new bullet point on my list: • Pregnant women should

wear clothing that does not draw attention to the fact that they are pregnant — as if pregnancy is something to be hidden; as if a pregnant belly is disagreeable to your eyes.

And then to imply that they are doing it for attention — “I get it, you’re pregnant, all right.” Is borderline bizarre.

“Now why, why, why such a desire to push that out in front of everyone?”

Are you serious? You do understand that the baby is not being pushed out in front, right?

That is where it is growing.

I don’t see how you think it’s OK to say such hurtful things about such a special time in a woman’s life.

Unless, of course, you think that all women are just trying to dress to get attention.

I have worked closely with women, and their views on their bodies for over a decade, and I can tell you that we, as women, have a long way to go ourselves in accepting our bodies as they are, but for you to pick on our pregnant sisters is not OK. That time in a woman’s life is sacred — they are creating a new being — and I am so sorry if their outfit choice is all you can see. They need our support, and you choose to shame.

Mr. Chesney, you have proven yourself a sexist and as such you have no right to be in public office representing your constituency with views that aim to separate and shame.

I call for your resignation immediately and a formal apology.

Coast guard cuts should worry mariners Editor: Re: “Coast Guard hysteria sinks lower” (B.C. Views, May 1).

The “ship monitoring stations” that Tom Fletcher refers to are more than just that. Coast Guard Marine Communications and Traffic Services (MCTS) centres perform two distinct but complimentary functions.

They provide vessel traffic services, much like air traffic control for ships, and provide communications and co-ordination to detect distress situations similar to a 911 centre for mariners.

They also broadcast maritime safety information, screen vessels entering Canadian waters, and provide marine information to other federal government departments and agencies.

The MCTS centres are the result of the merger of vessel traffic services and coast guard radio that occurred in 1995.

This initiative was proposed by the union, which recognized that technological change provided the opportunity to rationalize services and save money. The result was that the combined service went from 44 centres to 22 and the number of staff was reduced by one third.

The reduction in staff was achieved through early retirement and attrition. Total

savings of this co-operative effort are $14.5 million per year.

Industry minister James Moore is quoted as saying that “1970s-era ship tracking equipment is being replaced.”

That is incorrect; that equipment was replaced five years ago.

The equipment that is being replaced is the communications control system. This is what controls the radio equipment used to communicate with vessels.

This “technological innovation” is a touch screen communications control system that replaces the knobs and switches and touch screens currently in use. A new touch screen to replace the old touch screens is hardly a “technological innovation.”

Mr. Moore is also quoted as saying “these fears were also raised back in the ’60s and ’70s, when lighthouses were de-staffed.”

The last round of lighthouse de-staffing took place in the late ’90s and was halted after only a few lighthouses had been destaffed.

The majority of lighthouses on the B.C. coast are still fully staffed.

The recent 30-minute outage in Prince Rupert should be a wake-up call. For people on the water it was the equivalent of air

traffic control and 911 being out of service from the northern tip of Vancouver Island to the Alaska border.

If you were in trouble for those 30 minutes and called for help, your only hope of being heard would have been if you were lucky enough to have another vessel close enough to hear you.

When you get in trouble on the water, seconds count. If your house is on fire you can go outside, if your boat is on fire you are in the water.

This is not hysteria, this is a fact. There are many examples of mariners who only managed to make one radio call for help before “going down.”

The MCTS Centre in Ucluelet has been closed and the operations have been remoted to Prince Rupert. If the same outage were to occur again, and there is no reason to believe that it won’t, it would cover the entire B.C. outer coast from Washington to Alaska.

If you make your living off the water or just like to get out in your boat for fun and this doesn’t worry you, it should.

Thanks to the efforts of Mountain View Vet Hospital veterinarian Dr. Renee Ferguson, Township fire trucks are now equipped with oxygen masks for pets, ready to help animals rescued from a fire.

Ferguson presented the coneshaped oxygen masks, in three different sizes to accommodate dogs, cats and other pets, to Township firefighters at the Murrayville firehall on Monday, as part of Emergency Preparedness Week in Canada.

Ferguson held a month-long pet nail clipping service by donation at her vet office, with the funds raised going to purchase pet oxygen masks.

The April fundraiser went so well, Ferguson is now in talks with other municipal fire departments to outfit them with oxygen kits as well.

Ferguson intended to raise $400, but collected $1,600. She is currently in talks to get approval in Langley City and Abbotsford.

Girls Fly Too! soars above crowd, sets another record For the third time in four years The Sky’s No Limit – Girls Fly Too! aviation and aerospace event has set a new worldwide precedent for the largest outreach event of its kind.

On March 7 and 8, around 9,800 girls, women and their families gathered at the Abbotsford International Airport for an exciting and free event, celebrating women in aviation.

In 2014, The Sky’s No Limit was held — with award-winning success — at the Langley Airport.

Event founder Kirsten Brazier is a Langley resident and professional pilot of both airplanes and

helicopters.

Among many unique attractions this year was the opportunity to experience the thrill of flying — females of all ages who hadn’t flown in a small aircraft before were invited to for a free helicopter ride.

Participants also got to meet and ask questions of NASA astronaut and US Navy helicopter pilot Wendy Lawrence.

The goal of the event is to encourage more females to consider pursuing a career in the aviation or aerospace industries.

The strike then dragged into the fall, as the government held the line on public service spending. And what was the key issue that kept schools closed?

It wasn’t special needs support, where student performance has continued to improve. No, it was the BCTF demanding a raise twice as big as other public sector unions had already accepted.

In the end, their paltry strike fund long gone, the union grudgingly accepted the going rate. They figured they had the elected government on the run in court. Wrong again.

Next up for the ministry is taking control of professional development. A bill before the legislature will enforce standards, once the NDP is done denouncing it. Singing Solidarity Forever around a campfire and calling it paid professional development (a real example, by the way) will soon go the way of the union-controlled College of Teachers — onto the scrap heap of history.

There are BCTF members who understand how ill-served they are by their union. They are looking critically at the performance of their leaders, who are too often distracted by grandiose “social justice” campaigns as far away as the Middle East.

With her sentimental nature and passion for art, Rhonda Bastien’s new business is the perfect career for her.

“I am a sentimental girl and have had art in my blood since the day I was born,” she explained.

“From my art training to landscaping, I am always barefoot in a yard just trying to do the creative thing.”

Bastien grew up on the North Shore and attended Emily Carr after high school, completing a four-year diploma program at the art school.

After she was done her schooling, Bastien shifted her focus and worked in the service industry, but her creative side remained in the background.

“The art took a back seat but I was always creative in whatever I did, whether it was in my home or gifts, or that sort of thing,” she explained. “(Art) has always been underlying and now finally it has taken a turn and it is at the forefront.”

She moved to Fort Langley five years ago and opened up her new business earlier this

“Typically, wedding bouquets, anniversary, memorial and other special flowers have been preserved into pressed flower pictures as keepsakes.”

“This is an amalgamation of what I love — flowers, artistic expression, colour and texture,” she added.

“This is a work of art that represents your precious memories that will last a lifetime.”

The process, from start to finish, takes about three months to complete.

“We offer floral preservation with the technique of freeze drying, which is the most successful process to guarantee favourable longterm results while also maintaining their natural shape and colour,” Bastien said.

It begins with the client bringing Bastien the flowers. She then puts them into a freeze dryer for a couple of weeks and then Bastien colour treats them. This is followed by arranging the flowers into a work of art and the process is completed by Bastien framing the final piece in a shadow box or a bubble dome.

“A work of art that represents your cherished moment in time,” she said.

“I love doing it. It is very meticulous, very tedious, very time consuming, but I am focusing in on it and it is giving me everything that I need in return; being able to offer this service is personally rewarding.”

“We are grateful to be entrusted with your precious floral memories which represent the special occasions we all keep in our hearts,” she added.

The new lab addresses the growing market for environmentally friendly vehicles and the resulting infrastructure that will accompany the shift to alternative fuel sources such as hydrogen and compressed natural gas.

“We see this as the future of automotive technology,” said Craig Webster, a senior manager in the transportation fuels department with the CSA Group.

“They need testing services done so we are going to build

testing facilities.”

“What we test specifically on these alternative fuel vehicles are the high pressure fuel systems they use,” he said, explaining that the vehicles run on either natural gas or the new hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles which run on compressed hydrogen. “(These vehicles) store the gases at very high pressures on board,” he said.

“We test all the components that go into them.

“We have to test the tanks, the valves, the regulators, the pressure relief regulators, all these little bits that go into these high pressure systems.

“We have to show they are safe for the design life of the ve-

“CSA Group is proud to encourage the adoption of new technologies that promote sustainable living, and our new laboratory in Langley will help introduce new infrastructure and sustainable products to people across North American and globally,” said Magali Depras, CSA Group’s chief operating officer, in a press release.

The CSA Group has 35 offices around the world and the Langley facility is one of five labs in Canada and the second one in B.C., along with Richmond.

The other Canadian labs are in Edmonton, Toronto and Montreal.

And the Langley location had all of the elements the CSA Group was looking for.

“It had everything we needed,” Webster said.

He cited the size of the facility, the fact there was open space around it and that there were several nearby services they need, such as metal shops and machining, he explained.

And it was perfectly located with easy access to both Highway 1 and the Golden Ears Bridge.

The location to the highway was especially important as they do quite a bit of field testing — “some very destructive tests on these high pressure systems” — which are done at a Chilliwack gravel pit.

Outdoor expo at Willowbrook Willowbrook Shopping Centre is set to host an Outdoor and Active Living Expo on Saturday (May 9).

In 2013, Goldberg won the gold medal at the Canadian national judo championships.

“After winning nationals, there is always pressure to do again the next year,” he explained.

“You can’t top that result, you can only get the same result and it is frustrating when you don’t.”

“If you win by training a certain way one year, you have to train two times harder the next year to get the same result because people are always improving,” he said.

Goldberg, a 15-year-old from Langley, is preparing for his fourth straight trip to the national championships.

Demonstration Garden Celebrates Seedy Sunday

Notice is hereby given of the intention of the Council of the Corporation of the Township of Langley, pursuant to Section 40 and 94 of the Community Charter S.B.C. 2003, c. 26, to adopt “Highway Closing and Dedication Removal (Federal Government) Bylaw 2015 No. 5136.”

The intent of the Bylaw is to close and remove the dedication of highway of a 0.330 hectare portion of improved road beside 26717 Zero Avenue. The road will then be transferred to the Federal Government in exchange for a 0.408 hectare road dedication for the realignment of Zero Avenue to accommodate the Federal Government’s planned expansion of the Aldergrove Border Crossing.

The portion of road being closed is shown outlined on the plan.

Dominion Lending Centres Chief Economist Says US Style Housing Crash Unlikely in Canada Responding to recent news reports about the IMF warning of an overheated Canadian housing market, the Chief Economist for Dominion Lending Centres, Sherry Cooper, says the prospect of a soft landing is good news for homeowners, “there is no doubt that letting some steam out of the boiling markets is a good thing because were prices to rise rapidly for too long, a nasty correction would be likely.”

Cooper, one of North America’s most respected economic experts, points out that existing home sales were down 2 percent year-over-year in January, but were still up moderately outside of Alberta. Later data suggests that in February, sales rose month-over-month as gains in Toronto and Vancouver offset faltering markets in other parts of the country. On the supply side, housing starts and completions are down and are now trending slightly above household formation rates. Taking replacement demand into consideration, the current pace of overall home construction is at appropriate levels to meet long-run demand. We have also seen evidence of a recent increase in dedicated rental housing construction as institutional investors are providing increased funding in this long-overlooked area of the housing market. Condos have effectively replaced traditional apartment units and are an affordable alternative for those who are priced out of Toronto’s detached housing market. Rental vacancy rates remain at extreme lows in Vancouver and Toronto.

Cooper says the bottom line is that there is little evidence of an upcoming U.S.-style housing crash anywhere in Canada, even in the hardest hit energy-centered markets.

Flip City cheers its way to title

The Flip City Cheer team closed out the season with a handful of banners at the Okanagan Cheerleading Championships last weekend.

The Royals, the club’s U11 youth level 1 team, came first in their division, as well as winning the grand champion banner for the highest score among all level 1 teams and finishing second overall among all teams in the competition.

Flip City’s junior level 2 U14 team came second in their division.

And individually, Tiana Roode was first in the individual youth routine while Alyssa Andronyk was fourth and Taya Roode was fifth.

Reid wins monthly honour Langley’s Leslie Reid is the Dressage Canada Red Scarf equestrian athlete for the month of April.

The two-time Canadian Olympian earned the title based on her consistent top results during the spring season.

Riding Fine and Smart, an 11-year-old Westphalian gelding owned by Juliet Sears Ledorze, Reid finished third at the Golden Stat Dressage Festival with a score of 67.868 per cent in the CDI3* Prix St. Georges and second place in the CDI3* Intermediate I, scoring 69.974 per cent.

This was in early April.

Reid followed that up back home in Langley at Thunderbird Show Park, as she and Fine and Smart dominated the competition to win the CDI3* Prix St. Georges with a score of 71 per cent and then the CDI3* Intermediate I with a score of 71.291 per cent.

But speaking of all-electric vehicles, the Nissan LEAF was the first of six vehicles I’d drive over the two-day test drive. This year, we ventured onto Vancouver Island through Horseshoe Bay, Nanaimo, Duncan, and Victoria and back through Tsawwassen.

The EcoRun is an event that shows off a variety of eco-friendly vehicles, which include pure electrics, plug-in and conventional hybrids, hydrogen fuel cells, diesel-fuelled powertrains and highly efficient gasoline options.

Its purpose is to help inform consumers of these alternative options, as well as providing accurate road testing fuel economy numbers.

With a full charge on the LEAF’s battery, I wasn’t having any range anxiety.

The trip to the ferry, and then to our first stop totalled a little more than 70 kilometres.

I started with 143 km on my “tank” and ended up with 63km.

As for real world figures, I used up about 80 km of range for a 70.1km trip. I did have the heated steering wheel and seat on, and had the heating on as well because, as I mentioned, it wasn’t warm! And

Our first stop on the Island was at the Cowichan Regional Visitors Centre in Duncan. If you’re looking for things to do in the area, this is the place where you’ll get lots of great ideas.
