Take the time to thank your mom Mother’s Day is fast approaching and it is an important time to show appreciation and thanks for all of the special mothers out there, and all of their hard work. Let’s face it we wouldn’t even exist if it wasn’t for our moms. Moms tend to work the hardest for us, yet we

“Since taking over 18 months ago, manager Brenna Baker has led the branch in a transformation that is nothing short of remarkable,” says Lorie Chortyk, general manager of community relations for the BC SPCA. “The dynamic team of staff and volunteers has worked tirelessly to increase public awareness and support for the branch through media and community events; they’ve increased opportunities for youth education, including enhanced summer camps; and they have successfully secured funding to complete shelter renovations to improve the health and welfare of animals in their care.”

Chortyk notes that in 2014, Brenna and her team managed to transfer an astounding 111 cats and kittens to areas of the province where they would have a better chance of adoption.

“While the branch used to have one of the lowest live release rates in the province due to massive pet overpopulation in the region, the East Kootenay branch now boasts a 94 per cent live release rate – a truly incredible achievement.”

B.C. Views: Time for teachers to question union

by Tom Fletcher After the first few glum lines of his speech, it was difficult to tell anything had changed for B.C. Teachers’ Federation president Jim Iker as he took his familiar place before the TV cameras last week.

Iker droned on about how B.C. schools are under-funded by hundreds of millions of dollars, echoing demands from the disastrous strike he led the union membership into last year.

The B.C. Court of Appeal had just overturned a bizarre trial court decision that tried to give the union everything it wanted: a trip back in time to the NDP wonderland of 2001, a constitutional spanking for the B.C. Liberal government and a $2 million bonus of taxpayers’ money.

The BCTF must now pay back that $2 million and scrape up whatever is left of its members’ compulsory dues to plead for an appeal at the Supreme Court of Canada, continuing the executive’s self-righteous fantasy of controlling education spending in B.C. The appeal court didn’t just overturn the judgment of B.C. Supreme Court Justice

Susan Griffin. It shredded her legal reasoning and bluntly corrected her, over and over, on evidence she ignored or misinterpreted.

The appeal court confirmed at great length what I said when Griffin’s second decision came down in early 2014: it was far worse for B.C. schools than when judges decided in 2005 that teachers can bring union propaganda into classrooms.

Did the government bargain in bad faith? No. Did they conspire to provoke a strike? No. Did they illegally strip working conditions from the teacher contract? No. Turns out our kids are not just “working conditions” for teachers, and public policy still matters.

And it turns out that making special needs assistants dash between classes to deal with two kids here and three over there was a lousy idea.

Now there’s even a credit course offered in high school for students with learning difficulties, which probably has some BCTF minion crafting a pile of grievances about segregation.

In the negotiated settlement reached last fall, teachers shared $105 million to make thousands of baseless grievances go away, after the union filed one for student numbers in every class in the province.

This bloated perpetual protest machine drains the public purse in more ways than taxpayers realize.

Parents understand the strikes, though. They remember a union that

scrapped report cards, disrupted administration and forced schools to shut down at graduation time.

The strike then dragged into the fall, as the government held the line on public service spending.

And what was the key issue that kept schools closed? It wasn’t special needs support, where student performance has continued to improve.

No, it was the BCTF demanding a raise twice as big as other public sector unions had already accepted.

In the end, their paltry strike fund long gone, the union grudgingly accepted the going rate.

They figured they had the elected government on the run in court.

Wrong again.

Next up for the ministry is taking control of professional development. A bill before the legislature will enforce standards, once the NDP is done denouncing it.

Singing <I>Solidarity Forever</I> around a campfire and calling it paid professional development (a real example, by the way) will soon go the way of the union-controlled College of Teachers – onto the scrap heap of history.

There are BCTF members who understand how ill-served they are by their union. They are looking critically at the performance of their leaders, who are too often distracted by grandiose “social justice” campaigns as far away as the Middle East.

The concept was unveiled at the Shanghai auto show and its shape drew some sharp intakes of breath.

The angular vehicle features a raked rear window and huge rear spoiler plus eye-catching gold spokes.

SCHELLER: Eileen was welcomed into the world on October 16, 1943 in Wadena, SK to Anne and Olav Haaarstad, and left us on April 26, 2015 at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital, with her family by her side.

Eileen was the 4th of 5 children. She had 3 brothers and 1 sister. During her time in Saskatchewan, she attended school, helped on her parent’s farm and become a very good skip on the curling team.

Eileen met William Scheller in Saskatchewan and the two were married on July 7, 1967. Shortly afterwards, with their children Leeann and Shane, they moved to Wasa, BC. A few years later they welcomed another child, Clayton, into the family. While living in Wasa, Eileen had two horses that she cared for and rode. She took the horses to competitions around the area and won many ribbons.

The Schellers moved to Jaffray in 1976, where she made a loving home for her family and raised granddaughter Crystal as her own. During her life in Jaffray, she loved going to all the Motocross races to watch her sons Clayton and Shane race. She always had a big, beautiful garden every year and she always made her famous dill pickles for her family. She was always outside taking the grandkids for rides on her lawn tractor. Throughout Eileen’s life she also took care of her horses, cats, dogs, and the “pet” ducks on the pond. She looked forward to her trips with Bill to Saskatchewan every year to visit all of their relatives.

Eileen never missed a curling game or a Calgary Stampede Chuckwagon Race on TV, and thanks to Eileen’s phone calls, neither did her sister Annette.

Eileen will always be remembered as someone who never complained, always took care of everyone else before herself, and was always so proud of her grandkids and their accomplishments.

Eileen leaves to mourn her passing, husband Bill Scheller, son Shane (Rose) Scheller, granddaughter Crystal (Mike) Haarstad, grandchildren: Jessica, Emily, Samantha, Damon and Kate, great grandchildren: Justice, Danny, Madison, Mikey, Charlie, Chanel and Aiden, brother Gordon (Lynn) Haarstad, and sister Annette Kulcheski as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son Clayton, daughter Leeann, brothers Harvey and Erland Haarstad and parents Anne and Olav.

JUDITH DENA DAVIS 1938 – 2015 The youngest of four children, Judi was born on October 19, 1938 to John Wesley Sr. & Kathleen Stone at Bell California. In 1944 her family moved to Chester in Northern California where Judi was a valuable member of the Chester Community Methodist Church & Choir. She was a member of the school band, a member of Job’s Daughters and a member of Eastern Star at Westwood California. Judi graduated in 1956 from Chester High School and attended Chico State College for one year.

She had wanted to be a Veterinarian, but found that women weren’t welcomed into that profession in those years. Judi returned home, bought her 1st horse – named Lil Britches which began her lifelong love affair with animals.

Judi and her life partner of over 40 years – Jack Cutts – lived at Sheep Mountain Ranch. She loved the Ranch – even the hard work. Judi always loved her flower gardens, tended to her chickens with loving care & more than once had livestock in the house overnight. She had many wonderful dogs over the years and her latest dog Sassy will miss her many treats! Judi also enjoyed cooking at the hunting camp in the McEvoy and always had stories to tell about their adventures at camp.

In her spare moments you would find her reading – a favorite hobby, or writing in her diary. She loved books and was a regular at the Fernie Heritage Library where she made many friendships with the staff.

Judi loved having company and made endless pots of tea & coffee. She always took pride in everyone’s accomplishments and always encouraged the kids to pursue their dreams.

Judi had a full and varied life – a life she lived the way she chose. She touched many lives and those memories will live on for generations to come.

Judi was a loving Step Mom, Grandmother & Great Grandmother, Sister and Aunty. She is survived by many loving family & friends. Judi was predeceased by her life partner John (Jack) Cutts, her parents, a sister, a brother & a nephew.

City hires Water Smart Ambassador The City of Cranbrook’s annual Water Conservation education initiative will see a new face at the helm this summer. Cranbrook is pleased to announce the addition of Katelyn Pocha as the official Water Smart Ambassador for Cranbrook through into late August.

“I’m excited to be Cranbrook’ s 2015 Water Smart Ambassador and looking forward to connecting with community groups and members to reduce our water consumption,” says Pocha. “With a few simple changes, we can decrease water demand considerably during the summer season.”

Free irrigation system assessments for both residential and commercial water customers will be available again this year, on a first come first serve basis.

The public is encouraged to take advantage of the free assessments.

Information about how to sign up for an assessment will be made available later in May. “I am very excited to have Katelyn join our team,” says Chris Zettel,

Corporate Communications Officer for the City. “She will be the face and voice of our water education program this summer, conducting free irrigation

assessments for the public and business, providing information about conservation to the public along with a water conservation education program for elementary school students. She has a strong background and experience in environmental initiatives and will be a great fit in this

role.”

The City signed onto the CBT Water Smart Charter in 2010, which commits the City to help reach a basin- wide water reduction goal of 20 percent by 2015. To date, the City has seen an overall reduction in water use of 15% since 2009.

Melons. What's new & growing ideas - Part 4

I know everyone's garden in our area is not centred around the melon crop, they do play a small role, especially if you have kids or are a kid at heart. All melons require a minimum of six hours of sunlight a day and do better with even more. They will not tolerate any frost at all, so start them inside, but hold out until fear of frost is gone. Most melons, and especially these new varieties I will mention can be trained on a trellis or fence if you are tight on space. Melons require fertilizers low in nitrogen and higher in phosphorous and potassium...that's right, use your tomato food! Melons are big drinkers and require at least one inch of water every 4-5 days, preferably ground watered and not from overhead. A simple drip irrigation system is ideal! Here are few of the new and old varieties we have had success in growing around here that we will have available.

1. Melon "Fonzy" These are early maturing, round fruits with a very deep yellow, wrinkled skin. They are sweet, thick and firm. The plants are strong, vigorous and produce a high yield in about 70-75 days.

The fruit are about 3 lbs each.

2. Melon" Lilliput" This is a small, personalized cantaloupe. They offer high sugars and a wonderful flavour. Firm, deep orange flesh that is very tasty. Exterior begins light green then turns to yellow-tan colour as it ripens. Small centre cavity, full of vitamins, and fun to eat. Needs rich soil, lots and lots of sun and needs some space to grow.

3. Melon " Twice As Nice" This is a canary melon known for its strong and pleasing aroma. When it reaches a deep yellow colour, it is ripe. 68-78 days to mature and harvest. Needs fairly moist soil, as does most melons. The fruit is 2-4 lbs 4 Melon "Sugar Baby" These are watermelons that get between 6-10lbs, so ideal summer treats. This variety has been bred for Northern climates, with shorter days to harvest. These are ready to harvest in about 70 days and are extremely sweet.

As most melons are native to Africa, they need hot sun to grow. With our short growing season, success is greatly improved if you either start seeds indoors or purchase already growing plants. Plant out once fear of frost is over in a sunny hot spot.

You can trellis up a hot fence or bank if you are tight on space. They produce male and female flowers and it is only the female that produces fruit, so don't panic if the male flower falls off....I almost feel there is a joke in there but I won't go there. A good trick I have used is placing cardboard gently under the developing fruit or even straw to help prevent the fruit from rotting on the wet ground.

All grandparents must grow melons because how cool will your grandkids think you are to go out and pick a melon for dinner or a snack!!

Heart&Stroke Big Bike is making its way across the country, rolling into Cranbrook May 13. The Big Bike is an exciting

Cranbrook Parks and Recreation Master Plan The City of Cranbrook is in the process of updating its Parks and Recreation Master Plan. The first phase of the planning process is to collect information and input from the community so that the plan can be responsive to community interests.

The public is invited to provide their feedback at an open house, Wednesday May 13th, taking place from 4:30 to 8pm. During the open house, there will also be opportunities to participate in an interactive workshop, from either 5-6 pm or 7-8 pm. This will take place in the vacant lease space located at Western Financial Place.

In addition to the public open house, user groups will be contacted for focus sessions taking place between May 12-14th.

OBITUARY Frederic "Fred" Graham Patton Jan. 12, 1940-April 23, 2015 It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Frederic “Fred” Graham Patton announces his passing on Thursday April 23, 2015 at the age of 75 with family by his side.

Fred was born on January 12, 1940 in Cranbrook, British Columbia, Canada to Walter Graham “Hamie” and Anne Doris,(Ukrainetz) Patton. After graduation Fred married his first wife Cathie (Forster) and together they had three daughters. He was employed by the City of Cranbrook and then became a member of the Cranbrook Fire Department before starting his own heavy equipment business in the Cranbrook area contracting to BC Hydro and BC Tel. He moved to Columbia Falls, Montana in 1989 and married Carol (Moran), together they had a daughter along with Carol’s three sons. Fred continued working with heavy equipment in the Columbia Fall’s area and was employed by Noram and then with the Meadow Lake Development. After his stroke in 2002, he enjoyed his employment with the Montana State Veteran’s Home. He was an active member of the St. Jude’s children’s hospital and the Eagles.

Family was very important to Fred and he would do anything in his power to provide for them. He loved his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and was always so proud of them all. He learned to hunt at an early age and enjoyed every moment he could hunting and guiding. Fred’s other interests included rodeos, curling, hockey and music.

Fred made friends where ever he went. He loved to sing and entertain, as Matt says he knew more jokes than all of us together will ever remember. He was always the life of the party.

Fred is survived by his loving wife of 22 years Carol Moran Patton of Columbia Falls Montana; his children - Sheril Patton of Cranbrook B.C.; Lee-Ann (Norman) Pighin and their children Krista (Neil) Featherling and Tyler Pighin of Cranbrook B.C.; Debbie (Tony) Pighin of Fort Steele B.C. and their children Katie (Justin) Hjelmeland, Becky (Steve ) Tees and Lane (Jaycee) Pighin; Kari Moran Patton and her son Cassius Johnston of Columbia Falls Montana ; Kit Koster and his children Raevin, Shade and Carson Koster of Columbia Falls Montana; Dustin Koster of Watford City, North Dakota and Mathew Koster and his children Dally and Bailey Koster of Spokane Washington; great grandchildren Caydants, Damen, Atlin and Bryah Featherling of Cranbrook B.C. Fred is also survived by his mother Anne Patton, brother Don (Carol) Patton and his first wife Cathie Patton all of Cranbrook B.C. and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins aunts and uncles. Fred was predeceased by his father Hamie Patton in 1977.

A celebration of Fred’s life will be held Saturday May 9, 2015 at 4:00 pm at the Blue Moon Rodeo Arena (outdoor) in Columbia Falls Montana. At this stage of life, grandmothers can be restored with a simple telephone call, a visit, or an outing with the family. After all, the presence of loved ones is the most beautiful of gifts. Mo­ ther’s Day

is a time to appreci­ ate motherhood and to spend some quality time with these women who are linked to us by both love and blood.

Mothers and grand­ mothers can forget their age for a little while when pleasure is on the menu. A moth­ er’s heart lights up with love when a child asks her for a small favour, even if her active paren­ ting days are far in the past. A se­ nior can hold off the wea­ rying effects of Father Time by sharing family stories, singing a few fa­ vourite songs, and sharing some old fam­ ily recipes. These heart­ felt moments bind fam­ ilies together and create unforgettable memories for all concerned.

These women have done so much to keep their families function­ ing and well over the years, as much as they were able to. So, let’s give mothers the grati­ tude they deserve on this special day.
