City develops new trail system along Roger Creek ravine KATYA SLEPIAN

he Roger Creek ravine will be undergoing some major changes this spring.

The ravine’s trail system, stretching between Cherry Creek Road and behind Glenwood Centre off of Roger Street, is getting a $100,000 upgrade courtesy of federal grants, city of Port Alberni director of parks, recreation and heritage Scott Kenny said.

He is also applying for further grants to help facilitate proper development of this trail system.

The two to three kilometres of trails that will be created will be the biggest trail enhancement work the city has done since the Maquinna trails project in 2009.

“It’ll be a beautiful trail in an awesome area,” Kenny said.

The trails have been roughed out by local contractor Brad Berry in the past few weeks.

“Jacob [Colyn, parks supervisor] and I went through and we laid out the alignment.”

The ravine already had a number of foot paths but Kenny said that those weren’t always good guidelines.

“We don’t necessarily follow them because they would be tighter in between trees,” Kenny said.

“We will look at clearances between trees... we’re trying not to remove them when we can.”

“We’ll grade it, we may put filter cloth down where it’s wet and then we’ll put the gravel on top,” said Kenny, adding that the work will be done by city crews.

“The gravel finish that we put on it is a crusher chip, it’s called golf cart path material so it’s fine and it pats really tight.”

Laying the gravel will only take a couple of weeks.

“Then we’ll set in the trail markers so when you’re down here you know where you’re going,” Kenny said.

“Kiosks will go in to identify where you are and where you can go.” They will include a map of the trails.

The multi-purpose trails will be approximately three metres wide.

“It’s an urban trail so it needs to be wide, it needs to be safe so you can comfortably walk two a side.”

The wide width is also meant to allow for a little bit of vegetation growth on the outside edges.

While not all parts of the trail system will be wheelchair accessible, the northern edges—starting from the end of Cherry Creek Road and Tebo Avenue— will be flat and accessible up to the plateau that looks over the ravine.

“It also needs to be relatively level.

There will be a gentle grade but this will be wheelchair accessible,” Kenny said.

The plateau sits on a shale ridge around which two arms of the trail will go before connecting beneath it.

While the trail is meant for hikers, cyclists and in some parts, wheelchairs and strollers, motorized vehicles like ATVs or dirt bikes are not allowed.

“It’s hard to enforce but we’re hoping the public will help.”

The new Roger Creek trail system will also include a bridge. While not to the scale of the bridges proposed in the past, this bridge will be the first crossing of Roger Creek within the ravine. It will be similar to the bridge across Kitsuskis Creek at Gertrude Street that the city installed in 2014.

“It’s the same structure but we won’t be that fancy,” Kenny said.

“It’ll be pipe railing and chains under the railing.”

Using that structure saves on the cost— the city has bridges of that type stacked at the Fall Fair grounds.

“We’re going to be able to fly it in with a helicopter,” Kenny said.

“That’s the way we worked in the bridge at Dry Creek. It’s a really quick, efficient way to do it. It usually takes about 15 minutes so the helicopter time is really minimal.”

The bridge and improved trail access will aid West Coast Aquatic in their salmon enhancement work. Test spawning pools have already been excavated on the southern side of Roger Creek close by to where the new trail will go.

The salmon enhancement work will be more intensive than the trail work, Kenny said.

“It’s a lot more involved. They’ll be digging down and creating fairly wide channels down to the water table and then they feed back to the creek.”

On the south side, the trail will connect to the Fall Fairgrounds by the logger sports area.

While the $100,000 of trail enhancement work is covered by grant money, creating a new trail system is only worth it if people find it.

Efforts to that end include a dedicated parking area at the Cherry Creek trail head and possibly one at Tebo Avenue as well.

“It just makes it easier for people to see it, pick up on it and then walk through it.”

There will also be a map available on the city’s website (portalberni.ca) and printed versions at locations to be determined later.

“We have a map that is almost finished,” Kenny said.

“We’re probably not going to print a whole lot of them but it will go on the website.”

That’s because an innovative piece of the new map will come into play in the online version.

“We’re hoping to have components of it be interactive. So if you clicked on this location it’ll pull up a photo of what you would expect to see,” said Kenny.

“It’s based on a Google Earth map.”

After the trails themselves are laid out, in the next couple of months depending on the weather, the last step to the work will be re-seeding the edges with grass.

Rothgordt sentenced to life on appeal NANAIMO — Convicted murderer

Recently, I found myself in the mood for a classic tale of heroes. So I turned to an old favorite of mine, Ranger’s Apprentice: The Ruins of Gorlan. It’s got all you could want in a medieval fantasy; sword fights, flaming arrows, and long cloaks! But in all seriousness, Ranger’s Apprentice is one of the best traditional fantasies that I have ever read. The adventure begins when our hero Will, a boy small for his age with no particular talents other than climbing, is selected to become apprentice to a Ranger. Will had always dreamed of being a knight, and the shadowy ways of the Rangers was something that scared him. Who would want to be apprenticed to a person who is rumored to practice black magic? Not Will, that’s for sure. But as he settles into his new life, Will finds that perhaps he has found his calling as a Ranger, the people who fight the battles before the battles reach the people. And there are always battles on the horizon. Before long, Will is called in to prove his worth while trying to defeat an old enemy who could prove to be the undoing of them all.

The Ruins of Gorlan sets in motion an adventure that had me speeding through a dozen volumes to find out how it would all end. But be warned: this series is addictive. Because if Will fails, it’s all over.

The two had met through a dating website, and met at Shannon’s house where they had sex.

Rothgordt then struck Shannon numerous times on the head and upper body with a hammer.

He further stabbed and defiled Shannon’s lifeless body, covering the bed with assorted household items before stealing money from throughout the house.

Rothgordt’s sentence was thrown out two years later over concerns that the jury had been misled by the judge’s instructions.

That Rothgordt killed Shannon was never in dispute.

The new trial focussed on whether Rothgordt acted in self-defence, or was too intoxicated to have criminal intent.

Last Thursday, Madame Justice Arnold-Bailey called the murder “extremely violent, brutal and bizarre,” and upheld the life sentence for second degree murder with no chance of parole for at least 18 years.

Rothgordt sat motionless in the prisoner’s box as the Judge accused him of having no remorse for the “senseless, sadistic, and profoundly brutal” killing of the well-liked nurse.

Crown Counsel Gordon Baines said Shannon’s many friends and family members can take some solace from the decision.

“The end result being the same as the conviction made by a Port Alberni jury in 2010, I hope is some solace to that jury as well as to Mr. Shannon’s

friends and family,” Baines said after the judge announced her decision in Nanaimo Supreme Court.

“I think it’s important to note that Mr. Rothgordt in these proceedings admitted that he lied when he told the police he acted in self-defence, and it’s important in Mr. Shannon’s memory for everybody to know that he did not attack Mr. Rothgordt or bring upon him what happened to him,” Baines said.

In Kent Maximum Security Penitentiary in Agassiz, Rothgordt recently served a 30-day sentence in solitary confinement for assaulting a fellow inmate.

Baines said given the extraordinary brutality of the offense, a parole board might never agree to release Rothgordt.

Are we healthy, wealthy, wise? Time for teachers to question union We’ve heard Port Alberni is the Worst Place to Live. We’ve heard it’s the Heart of Vancouver Island. We’ve heard all the complaints about what’s wrong, and the counter arguments about what is right.

Now, the Alberni Valley Community Foundation is trying to find a way to collate all that information into one place: a Vital Signs report to take the collective pulse of the city.

The first order of business is asking members of the public to fill out a survey covering 10 areas such as housing, the gap between rich and poor, belonging and leadership, health, safety and learning.

Critics may say this is ‘just another survey, why should I fill it out’, but we disagree.

Here is a chance for us all to have a say on what we really think about the Alberni Valley; what is acceptable, what is not; what is working well and what needs work.

The result will be a compilation of data from various sources, all pulled into one location, and available for a multitude of groups to use.

Community foundations typically use the results to help them gauge where best to focus their charitable giving. In the AVCF’s case, they also wanted a community-based project to honour their 20th anniversary.

The report will be released in October.

It is hoped the report will be a good discussion piece on what our city really looks like.

VICTORIA – After the first few glum lines of his speech, it was difficult to tell anything had changed for B.C. Teachers’ Federation president Jim Iker as he took his familiar place before the TV cameras last week.

Iker droned on about how B.C. schools are under-funded by hundreds of millions of dollars, echoing demands from the disastrous strike he led the union membership into last year.

The B.C. Court of Appeal had just overturned a bizarre trial court decision that tried to give the union everything it wanted: a trip back in time to the NDP wonderland of 2001, a constitutional spanking for the B.C. Liberal government and a $2 million bonus of taxpayers’ money.

The BCTF must now pay back that $2 million

and scrape up whatever is left of its members’ compulsory dues to plead for an appeal at the Supreme Court of Canada, continuing the executive’s self-righteous fantasy of controlling education spending in B.C. The appeal court didn’t just overturn the judgment of B.C. Supreme Court Justice Susan Griffin. It shredded her legal reasoning and bluntly corrected her, over and over, on evidence she ignored or misinterpreted.

The appeal court confirmed at great length what I said when Griffin’s second decision came down in early 2014: it was far worse for B.C. schools than when judges decided in 2005 that teachers can bring union propaganda into classrooms.

Did the government bargain in bad faith? No. Did they conspire to provoke a strike? No. Did they illegally strip working conditions from

the teacher contract? No. Turns out our kids are not just “working conditions” for teachers, and public policy still matters.

And it turns out that making special needs assistants dash between classes to deal with two kids here and three over there was a lousy idea.

Now there’s even a credit course offered in high school for students with learning difficulties, which probably has some BCTF minion crafting a pile of grievances about segregation.

In the negotiated settlement reached last fall, teachers shared $105 million to make thousands of baseless grievances go away, after the union filed one for student numbers in every class in the province.

This bloated perpetual protest machine drains the public purse in more ways than taxpayers realize.

Parents understand the strikes, though.

They remember a union that scrapped report cards, disrupted administration and forced schools to shut down at graduation time.

The strike then dragged into the fall, as the government held the line on public service spending. And what was the key issue that kept schools closed?

It wasn’t special needs support, where student performance has continued to improve.

No, it was the BCTF demanding a raise twice as big as other public sector unions had already accepted.

In the end, their paltry strike fund long gone, the union grudgingly accepted the going rate.

They figured they had the elected government on the run in court. Wrong again.

Next up for the ministry is taking control of professional development.

A bill before the legislature will enforce standards, once the NDP is done denouncing it.

Re: Council balks at Clutesi Haven lease renewal, (April 16, Alberni Valley News.)

Council wants to pursue a commercial development on the Clutesi Haven Marina land?

There are approximately 175 boat slips at Clutesi Haven Marina where boaters tie up their boats all year round.

This is only a drop in the bucket when it comes to the number of boaters who come from other places, other provinces and the United States.

Perhaps council should consider Clutesi Haven Marina’s economical value to Port Alberni, often advertised as The Salmon Capital Of The World.

This is also where the boat launch is, and it is well used.

When I read a statement from Coun.

Chris Alemany that it had been too long that Clutesi Haven Marina had sat there unused and that a parking lot was not good enough, I had to read that twice.

As for parking, where are all these people suppose to park their vehicles,

and if they just launched their boat park their boat trailers as well?

The new Ford dealership on Beaver Creek Road is where some used to park.

Can you imagine the mess on River Road and a limited amount of residential streets in the area as people try to find parking?

As well as parking for a commercial development?

Then there is the Salmon Derby. This is where every year some charitable organizations set up there salmon barbecues and etc. to help fill the money pot to help those in need.

I would say Clutesi is well used as it is.

Kits station still needed To the Editor,

Re: Coast Guard hysteria sinks lower (B.C. Views, April 28).

I believe I may be the “retired captain from the now-closed Kitsilano Coast Guard station” referred to by Tom Fletcher.

I am a disgruntled Canadian citizen and voter, not a disgruntled retiree of the Coast Guard. I was good at my job and loved my career.

I retired after 32 years of service to an organization that employs so many talented and hardworking people, all dedicated to lifesaving, marine safety and yes environmental response.

I didn’t even think of getting involved until such time that the exaggerations and fabrications began pouring from the Coast Guard’s commissioners and deputy commissioners’ mouths, all for the purpose of saving the Prime Minister’s reputation for just one of his many illthought-out cuts.

The Coast Guard Station Kitsilano was primarily a rescue boat station, but “Kits Base” was also one of the best equipped and trained lifeboat stations in Canada.

That’s a fact, not some jaded opinion from a disgruntled ex-employee.

I was a coxswain at Kitsilano Base, a trained pollution response technician and a licensed hovercraft pilot.

Because of retirement I can now speak freely, unlike the Coast Guard personnel who are still employed and unable to

comment due to fear of repercussions from management.

How do you explain closing one of the busiest Coast Guard stations in the country to save $700,000 a year? When will Canadians wake up?

When will city wake up on mill To the Editor,

The arena, swimming pool and McLean Mill all lose money and we have lost past industrial base.

Most retirees’ pensions (unlike government) are not indexed. Is it reasonable that we should stabilize city costs or do we have faith (which is the absence of evidence) that tourism will grow to be an industry to employ us and pay taxes?

McLean Mill, our last adopted dependant was supposed to be self-sufficient $14,000,000 ago.

Richard Berg once calculated the mill’s welfare subsidy amounted to $20/ visitor.

Thunder Bay’s resurrection of old Fort William’s fur trading post has a

stable population of more than 100,000 to support it but other towns’ tourism dreams become nightmares.

Businesspeople must do feasibility studies to get bank loans and try to limit cost to compete and profit.

Government lacks limitations and that’s why public service wages and benefits often exceed private sector.

If McLean Mill is a make work project, is it cheaper to pay workers severance and direct tourists to our other aging mills (Somass and APD) that won’t update because they fear trees will all be exported?

China buys B.C. alder and sells us alder cupboards.

Neither alder nor maple are deemed profitable to log and are left to fertilize the trees that we export.

Will the minority force the majority to support this errant ward of Port Alberni to infinity or until it breaks us?

Do we have to draw up a Statute of Limitations Act or will city council give us a referendum to get this monkey off our back?

NIC holds town hall event May 7 North Island College president John Bowman is encouraging NIC students, alumni, employees, and community members to provide input on a draft set of strategic priorities and goals this week.

Bowman will be travelling across Vancouver Island over a two-week period, hosting town hall meetings at NIC campuses. He will be at the Port Alberni campus Thursday May 7, 12–1:30 pm, in room CEN 205.

“The college needs to hear from as many people and organizations as possible so we can carefully consider all ideas before the board of governors approves College Plan 2020 at the end of June,” said

Bowman.

Over the past six months, NIC staff, administrators and faculty have created NIC Plan 2020, developing nine strategic priorities that will shape how NIC delivers programs and services for the next five years.

“Throughout our planning process it was clear that student success is at the centre of all we do at NIC,” he said.

The B.C. government projects one million job openings across the province between 2012 and 2022, with 78 per cent of those jobs requiring postsecondary education.

A website has been created to encourage online feedback to College Plan 2020 at: nic.bc.ca/NICP lan2020.

Golf club starts ‘em young AGC: | Junior program kicks off May 25.

The Alberni Golf Club is known for its strong junior program, which kicks off this month. Lauren Thomas, Eric Gill and James Maxwell will all attest to that.

Thomas is the 2014 junior women’s

champion and worked in the kitchen.

Maxwell has grown with the program for the past seven years.

And Gill has found confidence on the greens for the past six years.

The junior program offers a combination of lessons and tournament play, says Brian Rand, assistant pro in charge of the juniors.

Lessons are offered Sundays, Mondays

and Tuesdays and the tournament schedule starts in late June and runs until Labour Day. Junior golf kicks off May 25. Clubs are available for players who need them. Registration is $250/ year and assistance is available through KidSport and Canadian Tire’s JumpStart program.

Too many turnovers in the first half of their rugby playoff game against Seattle Saracens cost the Port Alberni Black Sheep the game and a shot at a B.C. title on Saturday.

The Black Sheep opened scoring, but the first half ended with Seattle up 27–5.

Then the Saracens scored 15 minutes into the second to go up 34–5.

In that second half, the Black Sheep took territorial advantage and kept a handle on the turnovers, but weren’t able to overcome the hole they dug in the first half.

“Anytime we made a mistake they did good things with it,” head coach Jas Purewal said.

It was a great day on the course, and the Alberni Golf Course’s Men’s Club finally some warm sunny weather.

Fifty-five men teed it up for the MacDermott’s Insurance Waltz on Sunday. That was our biggest turnout so far this year. I expect the numbers will grow as the season progresses and the weather improves.

Once again there were some great scores recorded. In first place with a team total of 125 was the foursome of Steve Pointon, Dave Mann, Phil Anker and Bill

Barret, in second spot was the group of Cal Davies, Bill Bjornson, Jack Sparks and Cliff O’Laney, with a score of 127.

Next with 128 were Frank Hastings, Bob Matlock, Gary Korven and Jim Rhodes, followed by Craig Acland, Steve Acland, Keith Gauthier and Clark Crowe also with 128 but lost in a count back. Next with 130 were Pat McKay, Glen Barton, Bill Johnston and Don Grill.

In sixth place with a team total of 130 also lost in a count back was the foursome of Vic Carlton, Mel Trelvik, Ned Stewart and Wolf Suhr.

Rounding out the scoring with 131 was Jerry Swaney, Gerry Blender, Gerry Toms
