Former Red Deerian gearing up for opera performance Sixteen-year-old Olivia Smith’s powerhouse vocal talents command attention

A

t 16 years of age, former Red Deer resident Olivia Smith already has a spectacular voice. And with a terrific opportunity before her with Opera Kelowna, her future as a powerhouse singer seems to be that much more of a sure bet.

Smith and her family relocated to Kelowna from Red Deer last summer. The decision to move there followed a holiday to the city, and a pivotal meeting with Kelowna singing instructor Alexandra Babbel, a world-renowned soprano.

“I sang for her, and there was role in the opera Le Nozze Di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro),” recalls Smith, who is currently in Grade 10.

Babbel was so impressed with what she heard following Smith’s audition to become a student, and she offered Smith a role of Barbarina in the production which runs this August.

“She said, ‘There’s a role in the opera and I think you would be perfect for it,” explains Smith, who could hardly believe the astounding opportunity. “It’s very exciting,” she said, and she’s particularly fond of her character who certainly adds a touch of youthful energy and spirit to the classic production, which runs Aug. 14th-15th.

“Barbarina is young, she’s fun – she’s a little bit flirtatious but innocent. She’s like the teenager of the group – she brings that aspect to it.”

In the meantime, Smith has already been sharing her musical gift with the Kelowna community via Opera Kelowna and events such as Christmas and Valentine’s Day concerts. Also, during the summer there is an opera program at the University of British Columbia Okanagan campus, where Smith will be doing much of her training for The Marriage of Figaro.

“There are so many voices here that I’m excited to perform with and to share the stage with,” she explains. “I’m just in awe of them.”

She has certainly been learning plenty from the very accomplished Babbel.

“She is phenomenal. She’s amazing – one of those people that is so kind,” explains Smith. “She’s very supportive. You learn so much from her.”

Smith is well-known to audiences here in Red Deer, having performed with Central Alberta Theatre, the Kiwanis Music Festival and various other community events as well.

Her voice is indeed magical, and from the time she was about seven years old, she knew that she wanted to be a performer.

eight years, she studied with Cheryl Valentine here in Red Deer. And interestingly, she first had set her sights on country singing.

But her parents wanted her to pursue classical training to begin with. “Cheryl really helped me grow into it and love it, too.

“And for the past two years, I’ve realized that opera is really where I want to go. I love the theatrical aspect of it, and the greatness of it.”

Today, it’s clear that studying classical music has provided her with a foundation that opens doors to nailing any number of styles. She sings in several languages including Italian, French, Latin and German as well.

Another highlight this spring will be a trip to New York City that Babbel has planned for several of her students.

Performances there will include shows with the Brooklyn Children’s Choir. Venues include the Cathedral of St. John the Divine and Trinity Cathedral which is across the street from Ground Zero. “Alexandra has also arranged an amazing opportunity for me – I’m going to get to study with Joan Dornemann (of the International Vocal Arts Institute).”

Babbel certainly is thrilled to be working with Smith, and recalls those initial moments of hearing the gifted young lady sing. “You can’t listen to her without having this web of tears right behind your eyes immediately – it’s the emotional sound.

And she has just exquisite technique.”

First off, she was amazed at the repertoire that Smith brought to her audition. “And when she opened her mouth to sing, I was trying to not fall off my bench.

“It was like, thank you God for the angel that just fell from heaven,” she said.

“There is something in her spirit that is so generous. She’s such a giver.”

She promptly knew Smith would not only make the perfect student, but that she was also ideal for the part of Barbarina.

“It’s delightful, fresh, very youthful and effervescent. It’s perfect for her. She’s going to be great in the role,” she added, noting she also has no doubt of the tremendous career Smith has before her.

Meanwhile, Smith is loving the B.C. lifestyle. “It’s beautiful. I wake up and look out my window and there are the mountains right there. It’s amazing – there are blossoms everywhere and vineyards all over, too. You drive anywhere, and there are vineyards or some sort or orchard,” she said. “For me, there is nothing else in the world that would bring me the sort of happiness that performing does. I know this is the life for me.

“It’s going to be lots of hard work, and there are going to be a lot of steps, and I still have far to go. I have a long ways until I can fully achieve what I want to, but I really want it. I love it so much, that I couldn’t imagine anything different in my future.” editor@reddeerexpress.com

Program to help street-involved pregnant women

BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express At-risk females are seeing more support through a program via the Central Alberta AIDS Network Society.

The Women’s Program officially launched April 1st and helps street-involved women who are pregnant, who are sexually active or who have recently become mothers. There are currently nine clients within the program.

“There are street-involved women who are

pregnant, or who have recently become mothers and their babies have been apprehended and they are working to get their kids back, or there are women who are at risk of becoming pregnant, so we talk to them about birth control options,” said Sarah Fleck, a registered nurse with CAANS. “Between those three, there is a big need in Red Deer for this program.”

The Women’s Program is funded through the province and has a budget of $250,000 annually. Within

the program are two parttime registered nurses and one full-time peer outreach worker.

The program is able to help women at various stages including before they even know if they are pregnant or not.

“We can offer pregnancy tests, we can have a conversation about sexually transmitted infections, what your risks are, what you are doing for birth control. We can also have conversations around all of the options surrounding pregnancy,” said Jennifer

Vanderschaeghe, executive director at CAANS. “We are a pro-choice organization so we really look at this program as helping women in their journey, no matter what. If someone chooses termination than we are going to help support them through that process. If someone is excited to be pregnant and wants to carry the baby, that is great, we will support them through that.

“We really can walk with them through their journey, whatever it may be.

This program is about creating hope and support.”

CAANS also has a Doppler onsite in which they can allow their clients to hear the baby’s heartbeat, which has been a positive experience so far.

“The Doppler for two of our clients so far has made it really real for them and it has helped to start to move them towards change,” said Fleck. “They are in here, they have a confirmed pregnancy, they hear the heartbeat and they realize that they need to make a change moving forward.

That has helped us get people into housing and into treatment.”

Vanderschaeghe added one of their roles is to also connect with Central Alberta Child and Family Services early on in the women’s pregnancies.

“Usually Child and Family Services gets involved at the moment of birth, but this program is able to bring them in as a consultant early on to have the conversations about what success looks like and what supports they have to help that woman be ready to go so that they don’t have to be involved from an apprehension perspective,” she said.

In addition, in terms of the program helping streetinvolved women, Vanderschaeghe said ‘street-involved’ can mean many things.

“A lot of times when people hear that they think homeless and for sure we are supporting people who are living in homeless camps or who are sleeping rough, but it’s also those who are living in shelters and supported living hous-

ing programs. It also includes people who buy and sell drugs and who buy and sell sex. We have a variety of women who are in the program who all sort of fit in these categories,” she said.

Tiffany Blood, peer support outreach worker for the Women’s Program, said the feedback from the clients utilizing the program has been positive.

“One of the biggest barriers for our clients was transportation to a doctor’s appointment. That is one of the reasons why they weren’t going. We are able to offer that and support them at their appointments as well.”

Fleck added she has seen positivity as well.

“We have heard from our clients that they don’t know where they would be without the support if we weren’t there,” she said.

“It’s a great feeling.”

Former area resident highlights importance of bone marrow donation

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Originally from Delburne, Dave Gibson, 57, knows what it’s like to be plunged into the fight for one’s life. Now based in Calgary, the busy father and grandfather works in the oil and gas industry and his duties have seen him travel extensively.

But back in the early summer of 2007, he was in

an entirely different place.

After experiencing severe chest pain, doctors first suspected heart attack.

But tests showed no issues there. Further testing revealed Gibson actually had Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia. Thus began months of treatments that included blood transfusions, chemotherapy and eventually stem cell donation.

Today, Gibson said he feels better than ever. But

he’s never forgotten those who came alongside him during his fight back in 2007.

“I actually went into the hospital because I had pain in my chest on the left side – I thought I was having a heart attack,” he recalls during an interview from Houston. “They’re checking my heart and couldn’t fine anything wrong with it.”

the time, had been an active man who was also in good shape. But he remembered that earlier that winter, he had developed a bad virus in his chest and ended up with some fluid in his lungs.

But in June, the pain was overwhelming. “It was extreme pain. They had me on painkillers plus even sometimes they gave me morphine – that’s how bad it was.

“About a week or so into these tests is when I first met my oncologist. That’s when he said, ‘Something else is going on with your blood here’.” Tests showed Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia, which is actually extremely rare in adults.

“With kids, I think there is usually an 80 to 95 per cent success rate of recovery. They told me my odds were 40 to 45 per cent.”

They also drew the fluid out of his lung, which brought immediate relief from the pain. But the journey towards fighting the cancer was just beginning.

“If it hadn’t been for that pain in my chest, I wouldn’t have gotten that early diagnosis – no doubt about it.”

Two rounds of chemotherapy took place over the summer of 2007.

“Through all this time, Canadian Blood Services was trying to find a (blood marrow) match. They first go to your family, but nobody was a match. I was very concerned about that, because both my mother and father were born in Canada but my mother is Lebanese descent and my father is Scottish descent – so it would be like finding a needle in a haystack.

“Fortunately, Canadian Blood Services found two matches – they say the

best match is a young male adult between the ages of 18 and 30. So I know it was a young male adult. The person donating doesn’t know who they are donating to, and the person receiving the donation doesn’t know either.”

DAVE GIBSON But through the Leukemia & Lymphoma Foundation, after a certain period of time, patients can send a letter through the Foundation and potentially meet donors – and that’s something Gibson would really like to do at some point down the road. “That person saved my life.”

The transplant took place on Sept. 13th, 2007.

Chemotherapy that followed was particularly brutal as Gibson said doctors are trying to prepare the body as much as possible for the new DNA to overtake the unhealthy cells.

According to the Mayo Clinic web site, Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL) is a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow — the spongy tissue inside bones where blood cells are made.

These days, Gibson has really made it his personal mission to encourage

healthy Canadians to register as stem cell donors.

His goals include staying healthy and spending as much time with his family as possible; to live long enough to see all of his grandchildren graduate and grow into adults and to strive to assist the Canadian Leukemia & Lymphoma Foundation, Canadian Blood Services and the Canadian Cancer Society.

“I don’t know anybody that hasn’t been touched by cancer. I encourage people to think about that,” he said. “Blood services around the world are continually struggling to make sure they have enough blood to keep these people alive.”

Of course, bone marrow donations are even more challenging to find. According to Canadian Blood Services, More than 80% of Canadian patients receive stem cells from donors in other countries. Many more could be helped with a larger base of donors here at home.

“I’ve certainly changed my goals in life. I make sure I spend lots of time with family and friends,” he said, adding he takes good care of himself by eating right and staying active.

He also said he feels an obligation to help spread the word about how vitally important it is to donate marrow in particular.

“I do not believe I’d be here today had it not been for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Foundation, the Canadian Blood Services and Canadian Cancer Society.

I’ve done lots of talks for them, and I will continue to. It’s my mission in life to help get that word out and make sure people understand so that more people can be saved.” editor@reddeerexpress.com

Normandeau School raising funds for band program

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express A growing school in Red Deer north has received assistance from the community recently to help build their middle school music program.

Over the past few months teachers, parents, board members and citizens have rallied together to raise the necessary money to purchase instruments for Normandeau School to have the opportunity to offer Grade 7 and 8 students a music option elective.

ALISON KLAVANO Currently the school only has enough resources to be able to offer up music programming to students Grade 6 and under, leaving the students with no musical alternative when entering Grade 7.

Only a Grade 6 band program is being offered at the school in combination with the G.H. Dawe School, which faces the same struggle. This means twice a week, Dawe students travel to Normandeau to participate in the band program.

Having caught wind of the two school’s wishes to grow their musical program at a Citywide parent council meeting and knowing first hand the value of music in child’s life Everett Tetz, manager of Bo’s Bar and Grill offered to help in any way he could.

Tetz is also a school counselor who is currently on academic leave to finish his graduate studies and in

September will be returning to the school system again, but this time as vice principal for Ecole Oriole Park School.

“I view programs such as these as forms of prevention for bullying, mental health issues and a myriad of others challenges our students face,” said Tetz, who raised around $6,000 through a fundraiser for the school last Friday night at Bo’s Bar and Grill. “Every minute we put into prevention, we save in intervention - which is often expensive, time consuming, and have low rates of success.

“I believe we need to shift our focus to prevention and giving children access to the arts is a way of doing that.”

Prior to 2011, Normandeau School was preKindergarten to Grade 5, but was later made a preKindergarten to Grade 8 school similar to many others in the City. This left the schools to adapt to changes and start from scratch on middle school programs.

Prior to last Friday’s fundraiser, Tetz had been in contact with Alison Klavano, music teacher at Normandeau School who was thrilled to hear of his interest in the program as she herself has organized a number of fundraisers over the last few months.

Her love for music and the benefits she sees in the lives of her students push her to continue raises funds for the cause.

“To start a school band program is expensive – we’re talking within the vicinity of $20,000,” said Klavano. “So we’re starting slowly. I began teaching a bucket drumming class here and we’ve got something small in the Grade 6

“It’s a good team-building activity.

“It’s learning how to work together. There are a number of studies that have been done to show that kids who study music will flourish in other subjects and benefit their brains in ways we don’t even fully understand.”

Tetz said he hopes to con-

tinue to advocate on behalf of these types of programs and hopes others will see value in it as well.

“This will be a tough year with the cuts to education,” said Tetz.

“But it’s just been forcing us to get creative and find the money elsewhere to make sure every kid has access to these programs.”

Earthquakes that have been felt close to home The recent tragic earthquakes in Nepal have been sharp reminders of the incredible destructive power that can be experienced in the natural world.

Many people have started to speculate how likely such earthquakes might be in Canada.

The British Columbia coast and Vancou-

ver Island are certainly areas where major earthquakes can and have occurred over the centuries.

The biggest occurred on Jan. 26th, 1700 and was many times stronger than the one that occurred in Nepal.

In June 1946, a major earthquake, registering 7.3 on the Richter scale, occurred west of Courtney and Campbell River on Vancouver Island.

There was widespread property damage.

There were two deaths attributable to the quake, one by drowning and the other by heart attack.

Canada’s largest recent earthquake (magnitude 8.1) occurred on Aug. 22nd, 1949 near the Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands).

Again there was widespread property damage.

However, while this was a stronger quake than the one in 1946, because it was centered offshore, the damage was not as severe as the Vancouver Island earthquake.

The worst earthquake ever recorded in North America was the terrible Alaska Earthquake on Good Friday, March 27, 1964.

It registered 9.2 on the Richter scale. One hundred and thirty-one people lost their lives. n Canada, more than $10 million in property damage was recorded as a result of tsunamis.

Earthquakes are generally rare in Alberta and when they do occur, they are mild.

Most of the prairies are part of a large continental plate. It is only along the Rocky Mountains, in the Northwest Territories and in parts of northern Alberta and B.C. that quakes usually occur.

There was an earthquake, west of Sylvan Lake, in early November 1904.

There were not the scientific measuring stations in those days so there does not appear to be a record of how strong the quake was.

Moreover, the region was so sparsely populated that there is no record of any

property damage.

Newspaper accounts of the time report that the tremor was accompanied by a loud boom, much like a very brief thunderstorm. Nevertheless, the event seems to have sparked only curiosity and not any fear or panic.

There was an earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale that occurred in April 2001 northeast of Dawson Creek. It was felt across northern B.C. and Alberta and was noticed as far away as Edmonton.

Fortunately, there was no significant damage other than a number of items being knocked off of shelves and walls.

On Oct. 19th, 1996 an earthquake, measuring 3.8, struck near Rocky Mountain House.

A strong bang was heard, which woke a number of people up. Fortunately, no damage was reported, although the alarms went off at the Strachan Gas Plant.

Strachan is considered one of the real ‘hot spots’ for earth tremors in Alberta.

However, the strongest of these events have only been three on the Richter scale, about the same disruption as heavy trucks driving past a house.

Usually the tremors are so mild that they are only recorded by seismic equipment and are not noticed by anyone.

In recent years, the earthquakes noticed in Alberta have occurred some distance away from the province.

On Oct. 28th, 1983 there was a significant earthquake in Custer County, Idaho. There was extensive property damage at the site and two deaths.

In Red Deer, employees felt the Provincial Building shake and in Edmonton, the C.N. Tower swayed.

In October 1985, a series of earthquakes commenced in the Nahanni region of the Northwest Territories.

The quake on Oct. 5th measured 6.6 while the one on Dec. 22nd, 1985, measured 6.9.

There were reports that some people’s Christmas trees swayed and some houses in Northern Alberta rattled.

While no one was injured in this particular event, it left a number of people feeling rather uneasy.

OPINION Unstoppable wave We can hardly believe it. After 44 years of a Progressive Conservative government in power, Albertans were clearly fed up and voted for change on a sweeping level.

Jim Prentice said early in the campaign that Alberta is not an NDP province, but he was clearly in the wrong. The public support for the Tories showed a downward spiral as the weeks passed over the last month. And it is clear, Albertans wanted change and change we got with an NDP majority that was evident soon after the results started rolling in.

Premier-elect Rachel Notley got off to a strong start right out of the gate, but the pinnacle turning point for the NDP Party was the live leader’s debate a couple weeks ago.

Notley was outstanding and on point. She made a name for herself during that two-hour showdown with Prentice focusing almost solely on her to the exclusion of Liberal Leader David Swann and Wildrose Leader Brian Jean. Prentice knew Notley was his biggest threat, but we are sure he didn’t know how big of a threat she was as the campaign continued to unfold.

As for the Wildrose, Jean, the newly-minted leader of the Opposition, was elected merely days before the writ was dropped, so in all fairness he did quite well considering the condition the party was in that he inherited.

During the leader’s debate Jean lost some steam and dropped the ball with his robotic performance and one-track mantra of, “We won’t raise your taxes,” while avoiding Prentice’s direct question on how the Wildrose would make up that shortfall.

And it was the same response he continued to give right up until the campaign’s end – which was unfortunate because it left electors wanting more answers.

In Red Deer, voters also chose to support both NDP candidates as well. The populace clearly felt that they didn’t just want to support Notley, but were willing to give these women an opportunity as well. Barb Miller was elected in Red Deer South and Kim Schreiner was elected for Red Deer North.

It’s always good when campaigns come to an end.

Weeks of uncertainty, fluctuating polls and sometimes the whirlwind of activity surrounding the election wraps up – decisions are made and it’s now time to move forward.

We can only hope that voters made the best choice for our province. There are concerns with some people that the NDP may bring our province further into economic woes, but at this point, it’s also important to stay optimistic. As Jean said, he will work to keep the governing party in check. It’s about cooperation, he said.

Let’s hope he’s right.

The relationship between poverty and health in Canada With a federal election on the horizon, certain high level policy topics are bound to make the headlines beyond the personalities of the political leaders: the economy, energy prices, jobs prospects, even climate change.

SHIMMIN But what seems absent from the political hustings so far has been a discussion of the health of everyday Canadians, and how we can improve it.

Health for many pundits is all about healthcare.

And while healthcare deserves its place in the political spotlight, what should be a central concern for voters is the human and economic costs of poverty on health.

These costs aren’t just personal – affecting those beneath the poverty line – but affect our economy and our communities as a whole.

Fail to address poverty, and you fail to address health. Fail to address both, and your discus-

sions about the economy or jobs or markets are not complete.

Over three million Canadians struggle to make ends meet - and what may surprise many is the influence poor income, education and occupation can have on our health. Research shows that the old adage, the ‘wealthier are healthier,’ holds true, with the World Health Organization (WHO) declaring poverty the single largest determinant of health.

According to WHO, social and economic conditions and their effects on people’s lives determine their risk of illness, the actions they are able to take in order to prevent themselves from becoming ill and treating illness when it does occur.

We know that income provides the prerequisites for health – including housing, food, clothing, education and safety. Low income limits an individual’s opportunity to achieve their full health potential because it limits choices.

This includes the ability to access safe housing, choose healthy food options, find inexpensive childcare, access social support networks, learn beneficial coping mechanisms and build strong re-

lationships.

In Canada, there is no official measure of poverty. The way in which we measure and define poverty has implications for policies developed to reduce poverty and its effect on health. Statistics Canada does not define poverty nor does it estimate the number of families in poverty in Canada.

Instead, it publishes statistics on Canadians living in low-income, using a variety of measurements including the Low-Income Measurement (LIM); the Low-Income Cut-Offs (LICOs); and the Market Basket Measure (MBM).

Following the federal government’s cancellation of the mandatory long-form census in favour of a voluntary National Household Survey, long-term comparisons of income trends over time have been made difficult because the voluntary survey is now likely to under-represent those living in low income.

There is also a social gradient in health. Substantial and robust evidence confirms a direct link between socioeconomic status and health status – meaning people in the lowest socioeconomic group carry the greatest burden

of illness. This social gradient in health runs from top to bottom of the socioeconomic spectrum.

If you were to look at, for example, cardiovascular disease mortality according to income group in Canada, mortality is highest among those in the poorest income group and, as income increases, mortality rate decreases.

The same can be found for conditions such as cancer, diabetes and mental illness.

Poverty in childhood is associated with a number of health conditions in adulthood. More than one in seven Canadian children live in poverty – this places Canada 15 out of 17 similar developed countries, and being at the bottom of this list is not where we want to be. Children who live in poverty are more likely to have low birth weights, asthma, Type 2 diabetes, poorer oral health and suffer from malnutrition.

It has also been found Canadians experiencing low-income are more likely to report they have not received needed healthcare in the past 12 months. Also, Canadians in the lowest income groups are 50% less likely than those in the highest income group to see

a specialist, and 40% more likely to wait more than five days for a doctor’s appointment. Individuals in low-income are also twice as likely as those in the highest income group to visit the emergency department for treatment.

There is a profound two-way relationship between poverty and health. What this means is people with limited access to income are often more socially isolated, experience more stress, have poorer mental and physical health and fewer opportunities for early childhood development and postsecondary education.

In the reverse, it has been found that chronic conditions, especially those that limit a person’s ability to maintain viable stable employment, can contribute to a downwards spiral into poverty. Studies show the former – people living in poverty experiencing poor health – occurs more frequently than poor health causing poverty.

CITY BRIEFS UNITED WAY’S LEGACY FUND

at United Way’s second annual Leadership Celebration held last week honouring people who contributed $1,000 or more to the 2014 Campaign.

Legacy funds are invested to generate income that can be used to enhance the impact of campaign donations.

In celebration of its 50th year of creating positive change in Central Alberta, the United Way announced its new Community Impact Legacy Fund.

The program was unveiled

The United Way will draw a small percentage from the Community Impact Legacy Fund each year to support projects that are innovative and unique.

Like all funds invested through United Way, projects must address the root causes of social conditions in one of the priority areas – education, income or wellness. In 2014 there were 410 Leadership donors who contributed over $1,000 each to the United Way’s 2014 Community Campaign.

There will be no access to the main entrance from the east (off 50A Ave.). Patients and visitors parking in the 39 St. parking lot can access the hospital through the east entrance.

Delivery trucks will continue to be staged along 52 Ave. west of the hospital, where street parking will remain closed. The southeast portion of 39 St. will remain closed, however traffic flow will be restored to the inter-

section of 39 St. and 52 Ave. Those utilizing transit to reach the hospital will be able to access stops on 50A Ave. which will be served

by Route 1. Bus stops along 52 Ave. and 39 St. remain closed.

Access to the Emergency Department is not impacted.

MOVE CARS DURING STREET SWEEPING Residential street sweeping is underway and residents are reminded to obey on-street ‘no parking’ signs to avoid being ticketed or towed.

Signs are placed on streets at least 12 hours in advance of street sweeping and vehicles left on the street will be ticketed, and possibly towed, which comes with a fine of up to $155.

Street sweeping takes place from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

CITY’S WARMING CENTRE CLOSES The temporary winter warming centre operated by Safe Harbour Society closed May 1st for the season.

The centre is located in the Seventh Day Adventist Church in downtown Red Deer.

Over the summer months, support services are still available Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Safe Harbour main office at 5246 53 Ave.

Following the closure of the Berachah Place in 2014, the alongside multiple agencies in Red Deer, worked to set up a temporary warming place for the homeless population. The centre accommodated upwards of 60 people per day and was open over the winter months, strictly as a place to warm up.

FREE YARD WASTE WEEK Residents can drop off their yard waste at the Waste Management Facility for free through to May 9th, as Free Yard Waste Week returns.

Fees are waived for the week along with a week in the fall in an effort to encourage diversion from the landfill. The waste collected is turned into compost, which is sold at an affordable price each year. Yard waste includes grass clippings, leaves, tree branches and garden plants. All bags must be removed from the waste, and no garbage is permitted.

Free drop off is available to Red Deer residents only, and no commercial haulers are accepted.

MOSAICS OF HOPE NETS $22,500 The Mosaics of Hope Fundraiser is a unique opportunity for charitable organizations in Central Alberta to raise funds for their programs.

This year’s fundraiser wrapped up April 27th. Participating organizations began with a black and white mural, on display for the duration of the fundraiser.

NATIONAL EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS WEEK This week is National Emergency Preparedness Week in Canada and the City of Red Deer is asking, “Are you prepared?”

Emergency preparedness involves three easy steps know the risks in your community, make an emergency plan for yourself and your family and get a 72-hour emergency kit.

Since 2010, Alberta has seen two of Canada’s most destructive and costly disasters.

The Slave Lake region fires in May 2011 and the Southern Alberta floods of 2013 have raised awareness of the importance of emergency preparedness and the role each person has to play.

Shining light on solar power in residential areas

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Red Deer Express Solar energy is gaining popularity in the residential market and becoming more attainable each year with new technology developments and pricing drops.

At $23,000 an average six-kilowatt photovoltaic (pv) system for a residential home – the kind of system that generates electrical power versus heat – seems expensive.

However, in context, the same system five years ago was $58,000 and with energy costs continually on the rise, the initial costs earn owners money over time.

“The costs have dropped so much over the years. To illustrate that fact, we’ve been doing this for 10 years, and when we started, it was mostly remote industrial applications. The panels would go places where the infrastructure utilities were not really present, so the cost of the projects made sense in those areas. Now, we’re starting to put stuff up on residential applications, and more urban commercial applications,” said Caleb Schmidt, owner of Red Deer based SunFind Solar Products.

“Five years ago, to put in a pv module that we’d use on a rooftop, it would be about $2,000.

“Now, that same module is about $300.

The general public is still catching up to that. There is still quite a perception that it’s too expensive – but it’s not.”

Schmidt added there are a few different metrics to look at when considering solar power technology. One of those is the cost of energy, and the associated distribution

and transmission charges. These costs are factored into utility payments, and in Red Deer, this comes out to about 15 cents per kilowatt-hour.

With a typical residential pv system that outputs the same amount of energy as a utility grid, the system generates energy at 11 cents per kilowatt-hour. That means the power on the pv system costs less than the current average energy charge in Red Deer.

Schmidt said even though the cost of energy continues to rise, the system would still generate energy at the same cost over time, meaning the owner saves more money as utility charges increase.

“You’re buying a system, and once that purchase is made it is delivering energy for 30 or so years with no recurring cost. The average system for an urban area would be

about a six kilowatt system, and that would cover 100 per cent of the average home’s energy consumption,” Schmidt said.

“That system cost - installed, permits and everything – would be about $23,000.

If you take that into consideration when building a home especially, you can work that cost into your financing so that you aren’t paying it all up front, it’s spread over the financing term of the home. That certainly makes it much easier to handle.”

Some solar energy installation companies will also offer term financing to help that cost go down a little more smoothly for homeowners.

“When you put it in perspective, it’s an appreciating asset, it saves you money every month and it really adds to the value of your home. It’s a big investment, but it’s a good investment,” he said.

For Albertans with long winters, the production isn’t a problem because generated energy can be stored. This means that in the summer, a time of high production of energy, excess energy that is not used by the home is stored in the local utility grid, and measured.

Essentially, this builds up a sort of credit that would act against a homeowner’s utility bill in the winter months when the systems produce less energy.

“In the summer, for people who have a net-zero system, they can have negative power bills in the summer, and then they climb back up a bit into the winter when there’s less solar production. The storage is basically the utility grid. Any excess goes into the utility system for your neighbours to use and you are actually paid retail rate – what you would pay for energy.”

Schmidt added he has noticed a growth uptake in the last three years, coinciding with major price drops in the general equipment market.

As systems become more efficient, less modules are needed and therefore overall systems cost less.

“The installation cost floats around a bit, depending on the home style, or type of roof, and type of system and that sort of thing. But once you have that system in place, it’s a fixed cost. When utility costs are 50 or 60 per cent more, then your system is really a lower cost energy. They are a cost-effective source of energy and you can produce your own energy. A few tips on getting growth started in your yard

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Red Deer Express Having plants in a home or garden can be relaxing, visually appealing and healthy. However, not everyone is an allstar gardener and there are a variety of ways to get started.

One of the easiest ways to add some life and greenery is to pick up some patio planters. These are often low maintenance plants and are suitable to people who don’t have the time or drive for a garden plot, but want a little more horticulture in their lives.

“I tell people who are just starting out to try patio planters because they are a lot easier than to start a whole garden. You can sprinkle on a slow-release fertilizer and it will release each time you water, so you don’t have to remember. Then I recommend easy plants like pansies – you don’t have to deadhead them, and if you forget to water them, they’ll be fine for awhile,” said Dentoom’s Greenhouse Retail Manager Rebecca Bouw. “I also recommend petunias, calibrachoas, geraniums – they’re all easy plants. The only thing that I find people tend to forget with patio planters is to water extra when it’s really, really hot.”

No matter if a plant is a cactus, succulent or a water-loving iris, extra warm days will mean extra water to keep the plant healthy. For a big bang with a little bit of recurring work, some owners might opt for a tree. Planting a tree is a long-term investment, a little bit of work up front but essentially low maintenance – that is, depending on the type of tree. Fruit trees and other trees that need pruning can take a bit of effort, but evergreens would require minimal supervision.

“There are a few things we recommend for planting trees. When you dig the hole, you want to go about three times bigger than the pot size and a little bit deeper.

We recommend two things with it, which is putting a root booster at the bottom of the hole during the transplant, and it helps the tree not go through shock,” explained Bouw. “You put it at the bottom of the hole, you mix it in with a bit of water, plant your tree, put all your soil on it, and then sprinkle a bit of bone meal. Every time you water, it slowly releases. These together help your tree not go through shock when you’re planting, and then provide nutrients for it as it’s trying to grow.”

When plants are in shock, this means that the plant is stressed and is not accessing nutrients properly, or has an issue in growth. Often, it comes from uneducated transplants affected by weather, soil, time of year and root disturbance.

Bouw added that all of gardening is about preference and lifestyle. She said there are a few factors that a person must consider before acting on their desire to be a plant master.

She said that along with time, people must consider the quality of the soil, the amount of available sunlight in an area (indoors or outdoors), fertilizing and watering frequency when planning out their green space. As for planting time, the general rule from Bouw is to never plant anything before May long weekend, no matter the temperature or forecast.

One of the most important factors that new gardeners forget is fertilizer.

“One thing that people don’t realize is that every time we water, we’re fertilizing our plants. So they go home, and see a cactus that’s being watered and taken care of, and it dies in a month because there hasn’t been any fertilizer. People just don’t realize that we do that, so I tell people to get an all-purpose fertilizer and do it once a week or every second week. Or get a slowrelease one and then whenever you water, it’ll get fertilized,” Bouw said.

Bouw suggested that people do a fair amount of research into their yard space, soil, sunlight, design ideas and time constraints so when they come into the greenhouses, they know what plants to ask for and can be given the proper instruction. kmendonsa@reddeerexpress.com

The top 10 herbs to grow in your kitchen garden There are endless uses for these easy-to-grow plants in your home

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express Why wait for your outdoor garden and Mother Nature’s permission? Starting your own indoor kitchen garden doesn’t have to be a difficult task, especially when growing small plants and herbs.

Whether you wish to individually pot each small plant or place them all together in a micro-greenhouse – they tend to be easy to care for and require little tending to. If you don’t wish to wait for your outdoor garden, growing them year round inside can liven up your cooking and provide numerous health benefits.

Plants are readily available to check when on a kitchen counter, which makes them easier to maintain, and the issue of bugs destroying your garden are eliminated.

Aside from harvesting their bounties and using them to cook with, herbs can offer a cozy natural atmosphere to any bright growing-friendly room.

Here are some of the lowest small plants and herbs that pack the most benefit:

Lavender - not only does lavender pack a pretty punch of colour for your indoor garden, the aromatic benefits of the plant are a plus. It prefers dry, well-drained soils in full sun. The leaves from the plant may be used for tea, as well as infusion into baking. Even just dried, the smell will last for a long time.

Basil - the plant is best put to use in cooking, where it can add flavour to any dish. Basil leaves are best when fresh and added to a dish at the last possible moment as cooking will quickly destroy the flavour.

The plant is best kept away from windows as it is sensitive to cold however it does grow best in direct sunlight.

Mint - this herb grows naturally near water such as lakes and rivers which means it prefers its roots to be steadily moist. Mint’s low maintenance nature tend to make it fast growing, which in turn means plenty to use in teas and any other aromatic settings. It has also been used in the past as a medical herb to treat stomachache and chest pains, with traditional medicines referring to mint as an aid to irritable bowl syndrome.

Oregano - this herb loves a hot, dry climate in fairly dry soil but its versatility allows it to thrive in a number of climates.

Oregano is a go-to culinary herb as well as one that is best used when dried.

Parsley - while often only used as a garnish, this plant has also been ingested as snack or an addition to soups, stews and casseroles. It prefers moist growing conditions in full sunlight. The aesthetics of the plant aren’t its only benefit as it packs a high source of Vitamin C, A, and K as well as antioxidant characteristics.

Rosemary - most commonly used as a meat flavouring, this herb is one of many members of the mint family. The leaves may either be used fresh or dried and used for later. It also has fragrance potential and is often used in perfumes, shampoos or cleaning products.

Chive - a member of the onion family, this plant is used to flavour a host of recipes. The harvests are easily frozen without impeding the taste of a culinary dish. The medical benefits of chives are best seen in the high levels of calcium and iron when ingested, with trace amounts of sulfur, Vi-

tamin A and vitamin C. They tend to enjoy moist conditions and cut back to the base when harvesting to allow continual regrowth.

Lemon grass - with a subtle citrus scent and taste, this herb is used in both the culinary and medicinal fields and can be dried, powdered, or used fresh.

Thyme - it prefers a hot, sunny location with well drained soil and is often found growing naturally high in mountains. Oils made from the plant are known to create an antiseptic effect and are an active ingredient in mouthwashes such as Listerine.

Teas made from thyme have been show to be beneficial for coughs and bronchitis.

Cilantro (coriander) - most recipes will call for the crushing of the seeds produced by the plant, however seeds lose flavour quickly and are best used fresh. The uniqueness of the plant is found in the differentiation in taste from person-to-person as it often perceived differently with some people finding it to have a lemony-lime flavour and others likening it to the tastes of soap. jswan@reddeerexpress.com

Gardening trends for 2015 season

BY TRUDY WATT Special to the Red Deer Express The robins are back, the grass is greening and rubber boots have become the footwear of choice for many kids - all signs point to spring! It is truly a miracle to witness the transformation of our surroundings from cold and colorless to warm, green and alive with possibilities.

Of course, with every new season there are new products and fresh ideas to make our gardens healthier and our yards more inviting.

The organic gardening movement continues to gain momentum as consumers are demanding more eco-friendly gardening products. Organic and heirloom seeds have enjoyed a surge in popularity, as many gardeners are looking for seeds that are produced without chemicals and are hardy and reliable in our unpredictable growing season. Organic fertilizers are beginning to outsell traditional fertilizers as consumers wish to produce their own fruits and vegetables using only naturallysourced amendments.

Gardeners have also been taking the initiative to create their own composts from

kitchen scraps and yard refuse. This compost provides a rich source of nutrients for plants, and helps to build a robust soil structure (in addition to being economical!)

Growing your own food has become more prevalent as the desire for locally grown produce has increased. Even gardeners that don’t have a garden can still grow fruits, vegetables and herbs in containers; there are so many flavourful varieties that are perfectly suited to growing in pots.

Promoting colour in the landscape is a priority for many homeowners and there are so many ways to accomplish this. Plant foliage can offer colour and texture while satisfying any design requirements.

Ninebarks, with foliage in copper, burgundy and gold, offer outstanding color value while being hardy and suited to our climate.

Hostas, sedums and heucheras are perennials that have become the ‘go-to’ plants for outstanding foliage colour and reliability while grasses, both perennial and annual, also present tremendous opportunities for adding colour and texture to a landscape. If colourful blooms are

preferred a yellow peony, or a hardy rose covered in vivid red, pink or yellow flowers may be in order.

Annuals are another terrific way to place highlights of colour in a yard. Pots of verbena, impatiens, or geraniums paired with a vibrant ceramic pot can allow a gardener to express their horticultural style.

Lime green, turquoise or indigo blue are some of the most popular colours in pottery this season.

An ongoing gardening trend is the need for trees suited to smaller spaces. Lot sizes have become reduced over time and gardeners are looking for trees that won’t overwhelm the space they have to work with.

Ornamental crabapples, Showy Mountain Ash and Amur Maple are the top three recommendations for trees that will not outgrow their space.

There are also narrow trees that can be used as a screen or to define an outdoor space. Selections of these trees include Emerald Spire Crabapple, Purple Spire Crabapple or Columnar Blue Spruce. All of these trees are fully hardy for this area and can be a perfect solution for a challenging small yard landscape.

Miniature gardening or ‘fairy gardening’ has endured as a favourite pastime of young and old alike. Accessories like miniature bridges, walkways, and patio furniture can be used to create a setting reminiscent of a fairytale. Constructing a miniature garden is a fun way for children and parents or grandparents to spend time together and it creates opportunities for children to learn about plants and what they need to grow. Kid-sized gardening tools and accessories help to make little gardeners feel like big helpers as they tend to their favourite plants. Gardening is a delightful way for kids to become more aware of how food is grown and how yummy freshly picked fruits and vegetables can be.

As our yards come back to life we are reminded of the tenacity of Mother Nature and ability of plants to withstand even the harshest environments. Even if your space is restricted or your experience is limited there are still so many ways to get involved in horticulture - so roll up your sleeves and don’t be afraid to get dirty!

The importance of form following function in design How to easily incorporate contemporary design into your home

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express Form follows function – the term was coined in the early 1900s, a time when buildings began to shoot above the ground in skylines in a form that suited the function of a need to grow upwards due to a lack of space to grow outward.

The term even gave way to a period of ‘modern design’ from the 1920s to the 1950s as designers began to create clean, ornament free designs. The 21st century evolved the concept of modern design to create the idea of contemporary design.

While modern and contemporary designs are quite different in nature, both were based on form meeting function.

Local contemporary architectural product specialists at GestaltHaus explained form following function is becoming increasingly prevalent in North American design, drawing from cultural trends in central and northern European countries such as Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, as well as Italy where he explains the concept is increasingly commonplace as people are used to the idea and have an understanding that a certain quality of product is also standard.

“I think contemporary is more than modern – it is state of the art that has been well established but not necessarily mainstream,” said GestaltHaus President Dirk Heuer. “It’s about creating a clean place

that doesn’t have anything to easily distract you or that isn’t needed to make you more productive. The concept wants you to have the maximum amount of functionality, be low maintenance, and have lifetime sustainability.”

Heuer explained the importance of products which have been designed under the ‘form follows function’ principle.

“It means quality, not only in the way it was made, but with its purpose in your life,” he added. “How does that product enrich your life and how do you benefit from it? Products that have been designed under this philosophy - they are going to be well thought out and well engineered.”

Examples of contemporary design often include a minimalistic approach and can often see hooks on the walls to hang chairs or tables on wheels, which Heuer said allows the user to get the most possible out of a multi-functional space.

This often times means core minimalistic designs will be free of ornament and traditional decoration to free the room of clutter and eliminate the risk of a loss of functionality.

Heuer remembers a former design professor once saying to him, “Ornament is a crime on humanity.”

The saying stems from a time when only the rich could afford to decorate their houses so they would have trades and labour people construct incredible ornaments, yet they themselves could never live it or

buy it or have it for themselves to which he believes was the start of simplistic design themes. “To me I like a style that is a good balance of sleek and functional, but also older woods with character,” explained Heuer, who admits he himself does still enjoy ornamentation within his designs.

He explained contemporary design has embraced technology and strives to obtain seamless integration between the two. As technology continues to advance he believes the design will become increasingly

prevalent and continue to improve functionality. “Some people find it beneficial and important to have well-made and functional products surrounding them and enhancing their lives and as we progress technology will allow products to be better made and last longer,” he said. “But if you really want to start planning and integrating these designs in your space you must incorporate them at the earliest possible stage of design.” jswan@reddeerexpress.com

‘100 Women Who Care’ raises $20,000 for Safe Harbour

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Red Deer Express The group ‘100 Women Who Care’ recently completed their second out of four donation sessions that aim to raise a large amount of money in a short amount of time.

At the most recent meeting, 100 Women Who Care collectively raised over $20,000 that will be donated to the Safe Harbour Society to support housing programs. The official donation has not yet been totalled, but group organizer Cindy Jefferies said that they expect to be close to $23,000.

“Safe Harbour does a lot of great work in our community, and the funds that have been donated by 100 Women Who Care will go towards the housing program that they have. Kath Hoffman, the executive director at Safe Harbour, did just an amazing job of telling the story of how they help individuals, and it really helped people see some of the work they do in the community. We’re pretty excited to support them,” Jefferies said.

“We had pretty close to 200 people – I think we were just under – show up, and we knew that we had about 40 people in advance who wouldn’t be there but would donate as part of their membership commitment,” she added.

100 Women Who Care is actually composed of a group of nearly 250 individuals. The group has committed to meet four times in a year where they gather and nominate charities, with each member writing a $100 cheque to the chosen organization.

During the first Red Deer 100 Women Who Care meeting in January, the group raised nearly $23,000 for an activity structure at Eastview Middle School. At this most recent meeting, the other groups nominated were the Red Deer Marching Band Society and Camp Alexo.

“From an organizational perspective, it went a little more smoothly. We just knew a bit more about how to set up the room, and how to register and of course we were more prepared for things like needing more registration forms and ballots and all of those sorts of things. I think our membership has sort of solidified a little bit more. We had a few new people, but for the most part it was people that we expected to be there,” Jefferies said.

“It was a really positive energy. Everyone was excited to be there and to be part of something a little bit greater than themselves. It’s just a really fun, fun atmosphere.”

The ladies of 100 Women Who Care discussed that with a membership of 250, it might be a good idea to split the funds raised between two groups. However, this was voted against by a majority of people because agency funding can be used very quickly, especially with something like a housing program.

The group’s meetings and information can be followed on the 100 Women Who Care facebook page. There will be two more meetings this year that will generate funds for new agencies and organizations.

NDP Party takes both Red Deer constituencies

BY ERIN FAWCETT AND KALISHA MENDONSA Red Deer Express Not only did Red Deerians see new MLAs for the north and south constituencies, they also saw a new party representing them after Tuesday night’s election results rolled in.

NDP candidate Barb Miller was elected in Red Deer South and NDP candidate Kim Schreiner was elected in Red Deer North.

Unofficial results for Red Deer North saw 32,082 voters with Schreiner garnering 4,973 votes, Wildrose candidate Buck Buchanan with 4,167 votes, PC candidate Christine Moore with 3,833 votes, Liberal candidate Michael Dawe with 3,265 votes and Alberta Party candidate Krystal Kromm with 670 votes.

Unofficial results for Red Deer South saw 35,912 voters with Miller garnering 6,361 votes, PC candidate Darcy Mykystyshyn with 4,969 votes, Wildrose candidate Norman Wiebe with 4,451 votes, Alberta Party candidate Serge Gingras with 962 votes, Liberal candidate Deborah Checkel with 696 votes, Independent candidate Patti Argent with 213 votes and Independent candidate William Berry with 54 votes.

“I’m amazed, happy, shocked – everything,” said Miller, who was speechless after arriving at the wind-up party for the NDP in Red Deer. “Alberta said they wanted change and they changed – they changed the whole electoral area of Red Deer and Alberta. It’s going to be all new.”

She added the title of MLA has not sunk in for her yet. “I’m still mom and grandma,” she said.

Miller added it was exciting for her to see Alberta’s new Premierelect Rachel Notley win as the NDP Party secured a majority government early on as the election results came in.

“I was thrilled. I was watching TV and they said we were going to have a majority government – the PCs – and the numbers kept climbing and climbing and climbing (for the NDP). I’m just so happy that we got the orange wave.”

During the campaign, Miller said she heard loud and clear that Red Deerians in particular wanted change. “I think what we need to keep doing is listening to the people because they are the ones that are speaking and I am their voice.”

Schreiner said Albertans have spoken. “They wanted change and they are getting it. It’s about time. This was something that we felt was coming (an NDP majority government). All of the doors we went to, we knew we were doing really well. It was really exciting to officially see it,” she said. “It’s about time we start putting people first instead of corporations.”

“I think it will take a little while to sink in, but I am very excited. I look forward to meeting with my party and going from there. We will work on what is important to Albertans. We know what their priorities are and that is what we are going to work on.”

Mykytyshyn said he was hoping for a different outcome.

“Clearly, the residents of Red Deer South have spoken, and I’ve always believed that the constituents are right,” he said. “We’re going to have an NDP MLA in Red Deer South, and we will look forward to seeing how they take their platform and move that forward, not only in our constituency, but across the province.

“I think we ran a great campaign. We had a fantastic team, probably more than 150 volunteers who helped us out. We decided to do some bold things in our campaign, especially around our sign strategy. We tried to demonstrate to the constituents of Red Deer South that we like to think differently. I’m very happy with how the campaign went, and I don’t think I’d change anything about it.”

Christine Moore, Conservative candidate for Red Deer North, said she was thankful for the support she received throughout her run from friends, family and the community. “Democracy spoke tonight, and we have to respect democracy,” she said, adding she

didn’t want anyone who worked on the campaign to feel anything but pride in their accomplishments. “It was an adventure that I will never forget – and it was a real honour to meet the people of Red Deer North and hear about their dreams, hopes and fears for the future.

“It was amazing, and you all helped in so many ways. I will treasure that forever.

“We ran a great campaign and a clean campaign,” she said. “I will always treasure that as a great experience.” She added that she is scared, however, for the future of Alberta. “I believe we had a great plan – a plan that meant jobs, economic stability and a good future.

“Albertans are resilient – we will work hard and we’ll work together.”

Michael Dawe, Liberal candidate for Red Deer North, said the province-wide trend for the NDP party was overwhelming.

“When it comes down to it, essentially as an independent, a party does make a big difference in a lot of areas. That’s what we are seeing so far.”

Wiebe said he had hoped the NDP would not be forming government.

“I was expecting maybe that Wildrose would hold a majority with NDP as official opposition,” he said. As for the campaign, he said he felt like it went well.

“I think our campaign went fairly well. We got a bit of a late start. It was a little bit uncertain

in the early days, but as the team gelled and we kept working, I became more and more impressed with our efforts.

“Everything came together nicely in the end.”

Buchanan also said he was hap-

py with how his campaign went.

NDP cruises to stunning provincial majority Former Premier Jim Prentice chooses to resign as his party’s leader

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express The province of Alberta saw a surge of support for the provincial NDPs last night that saw the party catapulted to majority status.

“I think we might have made a little bit of history tonight,” Premier-elect Rachel Notley told a roaring crowd of supporters.

“I think that change has finally come to Alberta,” she said. “New people, new ideas and a fresh start for our great province.

“To the people of Alberta – I want to thank you for putting your trust in our party,” she said. “I want to say I’m deeply humbled, and I want to pledge to the people of Alberta that we will work everyday to earn your trust,” she said.

“You can’t go wrong if you stay in touch with the values and the common sense of Albertans. In this province, we are optimistic, we are entrepreneurial, we are community-minded, and we are careful with the family budget. That’s the kind of government that we will work to be,” she said.

“Together we need to start down the road to a diversified and resilient economy,” she said, adding the province must finally get off the ‘boom and bust’ roller coaster of depending so heavily on non-renewable resource income.

“It won’t happen overnight, but we must start. And we will.

“To everyone that gets up everyday and contributes to a better province, we are looking forward to working together with you,” she said. “The trust we have been given tonight is a call to be better neighbours and better partners. And I am looking forward to consulting with you and working with you.

“Our legislature belongs to you. The government belongs to you and you will be treated with respect.”

Progressive Conservative Leader Jim Prentice chose to resign following the defeat.

“I accept responsibility for tonight’s outcome,” he told supporters. “I also accept responsibility for the decisions that led up to this evening.”

He said he had told his wife he had no intention of living the rest of his life with the knowledge that he didn’t make the attempt, and so he opted to run.

“Clearly however, my contribution to public life is now at an end. It’s time for me to dedicate my time to responsibilities I have as a husband, a father and a grandfather. Accordingly, I have resigned as the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Alberta effective immediately.”

Wildrose Leader Brian Jean, newlyminted leader of the Official Opposition, said the province has clearly seen a complete change in direction, and he added that he was pleased with how his party fared overall.

He said it wasn’t overly long ago the pundits all but declared the Wildrose Party dead. “We’ve seen a complete change in Alberta,” he said. “And Wildrose proved (the pundits) wrong. You know why?

“The reason they were wrong is that they forgot the important thing about politics and the important thing about the Wildrose. The Wildrose Party isn’t about one person. It isn’t about Brian Jean. It’s not

“We are a movement in Alberta. We are a grassroots movement from the people, from the communities of Alberta. It’s a set of values and a set of principles, and when you focus on a set of principles and stick to them you can accomplish great things.

And we have accomplished a great thing tonight,” he said.

Jean said the party now has more than four times the seats they had when the race started. “We truly represent all Albertans,” he said.

“Thirty-seven days and we have pros-

pered mightily. We have done amazing things. And I think the one lesson we can all take from this is a lesson for the future.

That is that Albertans, and all voters right across this country, will not stand for back room deals, governments that play favourites or cronyism. You have to know voters will not put up with it – and that’s the lesson for all governments,” he said.

That said, Jean noted that his party will be careful to hold the NDP to account.

“Starting tomorrow, we are going to show Rachel Notley a little bit of that opposition,” he said, adding that he wished to congratulate Notley on her victory just the

“We also will work to keep them on their toes,” he said. But he said he knows that cooperation is key to really moving the province forward. “I can and we can work with her on ideas for reforming our government – it really is truly is about governing for Albertans. Mental Health Week It’s the Canadian Mental Health Association’s (CMHA) 64th annual Mental Health Week.

And this year, CMHA is asking Canadians to GET LOUD for mental health.

Building on last year’s campaign that encouraged people to talk more openly and honestly about their mental health, CMHA will again ask Canadians: ‘Are you fine or phine?’

Too often people claim to be feeling fine when they are not. So CMHA offices across Canada want Canadians to get loud, raise awareness, reduce stigma, show support, and ultimately take action.

“The fact is that we are all touched in some way by mental health issues at some time in our lives, whether that’s through a family member, friend, colleague, or our own personal experiences,” states Trish McAllister – executive director of CMHACentral Alberta Region.

“We want people to get the message it’s ok to talk about how you are feeling. Being ‘phine’ is not ok, and that taking good care of our mental health is a critical piece of having a healthy life and healthy society.”

Across Canada, MHW events and activities are hosted by CMHA’s 105-plus com-

munity locations. Activities such as seminars, open houses, film screenings, art shows and walks provide Canadians with information, resources and practical ways to stay mentally and physically healthy.

And CMHA-Central Alberta Region is no exception.

Every five years, CMHA – Central Alberta Region conducts a survey asking Central Albertans what information and education they need about mental health and wellness, addiction, acquired brain injury, or homelessness.

Your time is valuable and there are likely many demands on your schedule, but your attendance and participation at this event is very important to City Council. We Are the Body offers thought-provoking theatre

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Local playwright Andrew Kooman clearly knows how to pen a compelling script, complete with well-rounded characters and engaging, insightful storylines.

And on the heels of his last criticallyacclaimed and hugely successful work, She Has A Name, comes We Are the Body which is currently being staged at the Scott Block Theatre through to May 9th. Several more shows are planned for Calgary and Saskatoon as well. Performances are 7:30 p.m. nightly with 2 p.m. matinees. Tickets are on sale for $25 in advance and $30 at the door. We Are the Body explores the lives of three prisoners of conscience in communist Europe in the 1950s. It’s a raw, challenging and inspiring exploration of a time in history which I believe is far too often overlooked.

Kooman has clearly done his research in creating the broad foundation of the play all the way down to the most intricate of details. We as the audience are swept into the bleak and oppressive period from the get-go, and even though the set and lighting designs are relatively simple, they work beautifully to enhance what’s unfolding onstage.

Kooman has also explained he was inspired by two powerful stories as the idea for the play surfaced – Brother Andrew’s recollections of delivering Bibles into communist countries in the height of the Cold

War, and Richard Wurmbrand’s experiences of being imprisoned for his Christian faith, as recounted in his classic book Tortured for Christ and other writings.

As mentioned, in We Are the Body, the story focuses on three prisoners behind the Iron Curtain of post-war Romania.

Elsie’s (Heather Pattengale) only companions are Richard (Tim Bratton) and Micah (John McIver) who she cannot speak to or see in person.

In bringing the production to the stage, Kooman has teamed up with Calgary’s Burnt Thicket Theatre and Stephen Waldschmidt, who also directed the mesmerizing She Has A Name. There is no doubt that Waldschmidt is the ideal person to stage these shows – he has a thorough understanding, in my view, of precisely what Kooman wants to convey the most.

As said, the story focuses on Elsie who is on the receiving end of the contraband literature and Bibles and ends up in jail. It asks that question to what extent can people hold onto to what they believe, and why do they hold onto it?

Elsie, Richard and Micah secretly tap out messages to each other in Morse code. These sounds trigger memories so the past and present collide in a heartwrenching and occasionally humorous ways. This really serves to introduce us further to each one of the characters and their backgrounds as well.

Waldschmidt has a way with actors – Bratton, McIver and Pattengale are all exceptional in their primary roles (they all portray other characters to lesser

degrees as well.) Pattengale, in particular, is outstanding. Her anguish over the non-stop suffering she endures in prison is heart-breaking. As a trio of prisoners, their literal lifeline is that tapping system they’ve worked out to communicate. That human connection – as makeshift as it is – is like pure gold to these desperate souls trapped in such horrendous darkness. To Kooman’s and Waldschmidt’s credit, we as the audience can sense the tension, the oppression and the gloom they endure on a daily basis.

For Elsie, Richard and Micah, the choice presented to them by their captors is to betray people they love in order to end their suffering. Here’s where the choices come in. And that is indeed the question that runs like a thread throughout the entire production. What can and will people endure for what they believe in?

Even when the powers that be think nothing of crushing the life out of you because you hold to your Christian faith for example, and you refuse to divulge the names of other believers, what will you do?

But whether one is a Christian or not, We Are the Body speaks loudly and clearly

to virtually any audience, because the story is on many levels universal.

The courage so many have held onto in the face of such horrors is well-documented, and the frightening thing is that so many of these types of stories took place not that long ago – in the middle of the 20th century, for example. It’s a sobering reminder of how precious life is, but also how precious freedom is that ultimately enriches and injects purpose into our lives.

A person can’t help but leave We Are the Body with a profound sense of gratitude for the legacies that we can look up to, and the priceless freedom we cherish today.

All of that said, it’s not an absolutely perfect production. I felt that the script wandered a bit in the second half and was just too lengthy. Kooman is a superb writer – no question about that – but with all due respect, there was just bit too much in the middle of part two. The momentum and tension couldn’t help but dissipate to a degree. But ultimately, local theatre goers should be so proud of Kooman and his work. We Are the Body is no exception.

Crime Prevention Week

Crime Prevention Centre continues to make a difference The Crime Prevention Centre has been in operation for three years. In that time there has been an increase in the number of residents and businesses accessing the crime prevention resources.

The Centre continues to prioritize building partnerships and collaborating with the many agencies, programs, businesses, community groups, the RCMP and local municipalities.

Governed by a volunteer board, the Centre is operated by staff, Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and includes an information booth at the Market Saturday mornings, during the summer.

TerryLee Ropchan is the executive director, Laegan Meyers is the program development coordinator and Destiny Medicine Shield is the administrative assistant.

The Centre had over 90 volunteers in 2014 with goals to increase that number signiďŹ cantly in 2015.

The opportunities to volunteer range from board positions, committee work, program research, administrative tasks and event participation. Volunteers range from youth to seniors with time commitments varying from onetime events to regular weekly activities.

The Centre continues to respond to community issues and concerns regarding safety and crime by educating and empowering residents.

Grass-roots efforts are utilized like community conversations, grafďŹ ti clean events, booths at local events and offering crime prevention presentations upon request.

Programs developed and offered by the Centre include promoting Crime Prevention Week in May, a May – August summer

program that includes the community connectedness events of S.A.F.E., random acts of kindness, adopt a park and the Saturday Market booth. The AMP Program will bring the community together to look at how we can collectively ensure all youth in Red Deer ‘Achieve Maximum Potential’.

The three partner organizations working from the Centre have created a strong collaborative network and partnership with each other and the Crime Prevention Centre. • Central Alberta Crime Stoppers provides a national toll free phone line that allows residents to report their tips and information anonymously. S.A.F.E. PROGRAM 2015 S.A.F.E. is a collaboration of the Crime Prevention Centre, stakeholders and residents to create community connectedness by bringing residents together with a community barbecue and an open forum to discuss issues, concerns and positives about their neighbourhoods.

The Centre provides crime prevention tools to encourage residents to get involved, know

their neighbours and create safer neighbourhoods.

Recommendations and suggestions are provided back to stakeholders and the community regarding the concerns identiďŹ ed to help deter the negative or criminal activity that is occurring.

The 2014 launch of the S.A.F.E. Summer Program was a huge success with 50-120 people attending each of the barbecues and community conversations held across Red Deer. They identiďŹ ed the three common as: 1. TrafďŹ c concerns and issues such as speeding, intersections, signs, pedestrian safety, school/ playground times.

2. Inappropriate use of public space like drug use, drinking and loitering in parks, parking lots or common spaces.

3. Property crime such as vandalism, break and enters, theft from vehicles, vehicle theft, grafďŹ ti, mischief.

Of equal importance are the positives residents identiďŹ ed across the City, reporting they love their neighbours, enjoy their

neighbourhoods, the parks and trails, they like the proximity of their neighbourhood to amenities and cleanliness.

The changes residents identiďŹ ed they would like for their community included stronger community associations, more park/ gym equipment and a greater voice in the development or redevelopment of their areas.

In 2015 the Crime Prevention Centre will work with the ďŹ ve Red Deer areas of Parkvale, Inglewood, Kentwood/Johnstone, Morrisroe (East/West), Oriole Park. Blackfalds will be the ďŹ rst Central Alberta community to participate in the program.

Getting involved in Crime Prevention is only a phone call away!

Residents frequently ask what to report, when to report and who to call but equally important is why residents should report what is happening in their neighbourhoods.

Why should you report?

• Residents who know their neighbours, look out for one another and report what they see create an environment that discourages suspicious or criminal activity.

Residents who mind their own business, don’t ask questions and don’t interact, provide criminals the perfect place to ‘hide’.

• You may hold the missing piece of information that solves a crime.

A Red Deer resident reported a vehicle parked in front of their house. Suddenly there were tow trucks, bylaws and police as the call solved a major stolen car investigation as that vehicle and several others on the street were stolen and being ‘dropped’ there.

• Although several people witness a crime in progress, it might not get reported. In Red Deer, 70 people saw the same crime happen, in broad daylight, yet the responding officer confirmed that only person had reported it.

What should you report?

• Any activity that is odd for your neighbourhood, seems suspicious and/or is criminal in nature.

• You know your neighbourhood better than anyone else, report it if it doesn’t seem right or ‘normal’.

• Report suspicious activity or if someone is behaving suspiciously. This could include people cruising back alleys looking in yards, trying door handles on vehicles or knocking at doors for no reason.

• If you see crime happening, report it, do not assume that someone else will call in what you have seen. It is simpler to solve cases with information from 70 people than no report at all.

When should you report?

• Report when it is safe to do so. Do not put yourself in harm’s way or jeopardize yours or anyone else’s safety.

• For property crimes discovered after the fact and no danger is involved, report as soon as possible.

• Report vehicle accidents within 24 hours if any vehicle is not drivable or a driver doesn’t produce registration, insurance or driver’s license. Accidents causing injury, even minor or damages over $2,000 must be reported.

Who should you call? Know who to call for the type of concern you have.

Colin James brings array of hits to City

James, meanwhile, is thoroughly enjoying this particular tour, and looking forward to showcasing a decidedly mellower side to his fans in the acoustic-styled show. “It keeps me on my toes,” he laughs, describing performing without a full band backing him up. “I’ve been playing electric guitar all of my life – you put one in my hands – it’s kind of what I’ve always done.

But in my earlier years, when I was about 10 until I was about 16, I played a lot of folk music,” he explains. “So I played a lot of acoustic music until I was 16. (With this tour), I’m going back to something I used to do and something I love. You can talk a little more between the songs about the songs, too, and give people a little bit more context.”

He explains Hearts on Fire was a long time coming. “I had wanted a more subdued record for awhile, but I just couldn’t seem to get to it. The timing was never right,” he said. “I had to wait a bit.

“I wanted to make something that you could kind of put on and leave on, something with more of a relaxed vibe.”

Hearts of Fire is indeed packed with all kinds of standout sonic gems, from the slowed down, smoky, blues-infused opener and title track and the energetic snap of Just a Little Love to the infectious lilt of Heartbreak Road.

Honey Bee follows an edgy rock-solid groove, where songs like the gentle Paper Airplanes show James’ more reflective side as does You Were Never Mine. I Wanna Sing, a flat-out rollicking blues number is wonderfully reminiscent of some of his earlier offerings.

“Making this record with my good friend Colin Linden with such a fantastic veteran rhythm section was an amazing experience,” says James, adding he and Linden have known each other since they were teens. “We have a connection. This is also our fourth record I think, so we put together this beautiful band, so it was a lot of fun.

“I’ve known him since I was 13 and he was 16, and he knows every twist and turn I’ve had along the way and so do I about him,” he laughs. “You can’t beat working with someone who really knows you.

“The majority of the recording was also done in Nashville during a stretch of warm spring weather so every time I hear the songs I feel like I’m right back in the south.

I hope my fans enjoy listening to this record as much as we all enjoyed making it.”

When James first hit the scene a quarter century ago, he became an instant rock guitar hero, mentored by Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Since then, he has topped the charts as a pop vocalist, recorded acclaimed blues discs and led the swing revival with his Little Big Band, which he both fronted and produced.

A passion for music was sparked early on. By the time he was 13, he was making something of a name for himself as a gifted mandolin player as well. “I joined this band at the time, and there were autoharps and banjos and acoustic guitars and bongos – you name it. We’d play barn dances and gigs around Saskatchewan.”

He ventured into punk briefly in his mid-teens, but promptly knew it wasn’t for him. He even signed on with a reggae band briefly. Such a whirlwind of experiences no doubt fueled his remarkable versatility today.

James left home at 16 and moved to Winnipeg after it became obvious there was no other path for him to take. That’s also when he got started with his first blues band which was The Hoodoo Men. That

was in the early 1980s. Just a few years later, in 1988, his self-titled debut was released and an enormously successful career was born.

It won him his first Juno and an opening spot on tour with Keith Richards. His second album, Sudden Stop, featured his hit Just Came Back which reached number three on the U.S. radio charts and earned him the Juno Award for ‘Single of the Year.’

James was next credited with launching the swing revival, thanks to his popular Little Big Band, which has released four albums to date.

Singer Peter Katz to feature new CD Artist to perform at Fratters this week

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Riding the rush of accolades from his latest CD, singer/songwriter Peter Katz brings his international tour to Red Deer’s Fratters Speakeasy May 9th.

We Are The Reckoning is a collection of 11 songs from the Juno-nominated singer-songwriter.

He just returned from touring through Europe where he continues to garner much-deserved support and acclaim for his exceptional talents as an artist.

“I have put a lot of time and energy into the Netherlands, and I’ve had some really good fortune touring there with some larger artists and getting some great opportunities,” he said during a chat from London.

Germany is increasingly becoming acquainted with his music, and it’s always fun to visit London where folks are tuning into his repertoire as well. Switzerland is also showing more and more support these day, too.

After three tours in support of his 2012 release Still Mind Still, Katz spent much of the past two years writing more than 50 songs all the while collaborating on some of them with a list of co-writers in Los Angeles, London and even at home

in Toronto.

Hanging out in LA proved a fascinating, albeit at times, kind of intimidating experience. Much of the production was done in Ontario, but California brought a bevy of rich songwriting sessions in particular. To help him focus more on his art, Katz would do a morning run in the Hollywood hills.

“A lot of my time in LA was for writing sessions, and kind of doing the groundwork. Day after day after day, I was in these rooms with people who have these amazing track records – musicians I really respect and serious heavyweights in the industry,” he said.

“It was scary because I’ve always typically written alone and you think you know how to write a song, but then you (ask yourself) do I really,” he laughs.

“You sort of wonder, can I actually roll with the big boys and girls, you know?

That feeling is very disorienting and exciting – you want to do your best.”

During his vigorous daily run he would use the time to generate ideas as well.

“It was the only thing I could do to feel like I had control over something.”

His hard work paid off when he attracted the attention of co-producers Royal Wood and Bill Lefler

who signed on to help him with We Are The Reckoning. Wood and Lefler also were integral to the process of selecting from those 50 songs what would end up on the CD. They didn’t always agree on what to include and what to leave out, but Katz was determined to really let go and trust the guys. Not that he didn’t have a role in it, but he was trusting their experience.

“Sometimes they didn’t pick the songs that I thought would have picked. Sometimes they for sure didn’t pick the songs that I thought would have picked,” he laughs. “They also didn’t go for some of my favourites.

“I felt like, let’s just see what they see in all of this, and let’s explore that. And let’s not shut it down before it’s complete. It was a really healthy process.”

Ultimately, there’s something stimulating about bringing new folks into the mix.

“Those moments, when you lose your bearings, when you’re forced to sink or swim, are the moments when you have an opportunity to rise to the occasion, to surprise yourself, to do the things you didn’t know you could do. That’s what making this album was for me, I’m so proud of the process, and I’m so proud of the result.” editor@reddeerexpress.com

Famed Canadian author to visit City’s library Mystery lovers of Red Deer will be able to meet the queen of Canadian crime fiction during an anniversary tour stop at the downtown branch of the Red Deer Public Library on May 11th.

The tour coincides with the release of Gail Bowen’s 15th Joanne Kilbourn novel, 12 Rose Street.

“We are delighted to welcome such a talented mystery writer,” said Amy Trepanier, teen services librarian. “Canadians have grown up reading Joanne Kilbourn mysteries, and it will be exciting to meet the woman behind this

Experiences are much better than ‘stuff’ I read an article today that sparked a thought for me and it reminded me of how much I have changed.

McDERMOTT I used to like stuff. I had a lot of stuff.

Stuff was super important. I always wanted the newest, latest, greatest stuff. My income didn’t always match that desire, and my intelligence certainly didn’t. I remember struggling to pay the mortgage and wanting the latest four head super VHS movie player for $800. Wow! For good reason my wife and I used to fight like crazy over money back then. It was brutal.

We were both so absolutely opposite in our habits that it was a total malfunc-

tion. She was a saver and I was a spender.

She wouldn’t spend money on anything unless she absolutely had to and I would buy stuff I couldn’t afford just cause I wanted it.

We took a course called ‘The Millionaire Mind’ by T. Harv Eker and it changed everything in a single weekend.

We both recognized why this was for us and it gets pretty deep. I saw stuff as a security thing. If you had enough stuff, you were a success and comfortable (not true).

My wife figured money was scarce and hard to come by and had to always be saved, never wasted.

Over time she learned to spend and I learned to save. It sounds easy, but it did take some time and some reprogramming.

We first started working on a percentagebased system of managing our money that was taught at the course and really hard at first, but it really did work after we massaged it! The goal was we had to make our bills fit into 60% of our income and then we

would save 10% for long-term stuff and big expenses, Tithe or donate 10%, put 5% into an education account and then 15% was play money to blow however we pleased.

At first those numbers were impossible for us. Our bills were more like 90%, so we just adjusted the other numbers to suit and worked hard at reducing our bills, increasing our income and changing our lifestyle.

I can honestly say that we have never fought over money since - that was 15 years ago.

Okay, I have not suddenly become an accountant or a financial advisor, here’s the deal - nowadays I spend my money on experiences and not stuff.

I race, we travel, we do cool things that create amazing memories and we are infinitely happier. Yes, we still have some stuff, but only what we need and most of the stuff we buy now gives us experiences like a new bike.

I have learned that experiences are way better than stuff in so many ways. Experi-

Put them in prison to find out about blood cholesterol

Fundraiser for Somalian school

The fundraiser is a Mother’s Day Tea that will take place at The Hub on Ross, May 9th from 1p.m. to 4p.m. Admission is free. The event will include tea and baked goods, a silent auction, international music and dance and several ware sales that will raise funds for Mohamoud’s Somalian school, as well as The Global Enrichment Foundation and GrammaLink.

“This Mother’s Day Tea is the last fundraiser before my trip, where I will leave to Toronto on May 16th. I’m going there to

raise a little bit more money and I’ll stay there until the end of May, when I’ll go to Boston to fundraise more. I’ll go back to Toronto, and fly to Somalia from there at the end of June,” she said.

Some of the silent auction items include art frames, gift certificates, a home yoga package and various bath, body and home items.

“It’s been almost a year of fundraising, and everything really went so fast. I’ve gotten all the support and interest from my friends and it’s been great for me. I’m a little bit nervous about going back to Somalia – it’s been 20 years since I’ve gone, but I’m still excited because I know I’m going to make a difference.”

Dr. John Judkin, formerly Emeritus Professor of Physiology at London University, London, England, made headlines years ago when he reported that a high dietary intake of animal fat and the eating of foods containing cholesterol were not the cause of coronary heart disease. Of course he was ridiculed for such an idea.

But Judkin pointed to a greater correlation between the intake of sucrose (ordinary sugar) and coronary attack. For instance, a study conducted in 15 countries showed that as the population consumed more sugar, there was a dramatic increase in heart attack.

What is more impressive is a prison study carried out by Milton Winitz, a U.S. biochemist, in 1964. Eighteen prisoners, kept behind bars for six months, were provided food that was well regulated.

Titans’ Rugby gets underway in City

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express The Titans Rugby Club kicked off their men and women’s leagues last Saturday afternoon on their home pitch for their 43rd season in Red Deer.

This year the Titans are fielding two men’s teams – one division two, one division three, and one women’s team.

Last Saturday’s games saw a loss on the board for the men’s division three team against Saracens division three team with the division two team coming out on top of their match with a 47-15 win against the Saracens’ division three team.

Senior men’s program Head Coach Mike Berry returned to the field for his second year as coach with the Club stating he was thrilled to see a number of returning players from last year, with only five new players out of the 39 registered players.

His first season as coach saw the division two team finish first in their league but were defeated in the semi-finals to finish the year.

“All of the guys are ready to go further than that this year and know we are better than that,” said Berry. “It shows in the practices we’re ready to be better when guys come in and are ready to go right away and eager to get on the field and train.

“Practices have been two long hours of focus and dedication for us so far this year and it really showed in those first games.”

He added the mix of age, skill level and experience is a great addition to the team as more experienced players tend to take a leadership role and have greatly helped in getting new players up to speed.

Unfortunately last Saturday’s game didn’t go as smoothly as planned for the women’s Titans team said Head Coach Bill Bowd.

Art of boxing at the forefront of local Club’s open house

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express The Red Deer & District Boxing Club hosted an open house over the weekend, in which they saw around 60 people gracing the rings of the downtown location.

With a long-standing history in the City, the Club hosted the open house as a means of opening their doors to the community.

Roman Rzepkowski, a coach with the Red Deer Boxing Club, explained the open house was a great way to let people know the Club is there for their use.

“Since our early days, Red Deer Boxing Club has always been a word of mouth kind of club,” he explained in an interview following the open house, which was held on the afternoon prior to the ‘MayPac’ match-up on Saturday between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. “With the hype that has returned to boxing it’s a great time to engage the people around us and help them fall in love with the sport.”

Over the 20-plus years of their operations, a number of elite level boxers have called the Club home, including eight-time Alberta champion Cameron O’Connell, as well as Arash Usmanee who eventually relocated to Montreal where he went on to win a number of national championships.

Rzepkowski added the Club’s number one focus is to ensure every attending member has fun – after that the coaches are there to meet the goals of each individual boxer depending where on the spectrum of recreational to competitive they fall.

“Boxing is strategic, it’s a mind

game - you can win a boxing match before you even step in the ring due to the psychological nature of the sport,” he explained.

“If you haven’t watched boxing before you are going to see hands hitting faces.

“Those trained in the sport will see footwork, breathing, stance – at the end of the day that’s what we are here for is to explain the art of boxing.”

He added the Club’s atmosphere is continuously one of mutual respect and community, as well as an avenue that allows them to change the perception of boxing. Rzepkowski explained at any given time you can walk into the Club and see a 40-year-old training alongside a 10-year-old kid.

“When people come down and see the interaction between athletes and the level at which we care for them to avoid injuries people’s perceptions of the sport itself change.”

A highlight from the open house for the coach was watching two young Club members ages seven and 10 spar in the ring. He explained the room went quiet as the two youngsters went head to head.

“Everyone is interested to see what happens when a seven-yearold takes a light knock to the face,” he said of the spar. “When he smiles and keeps going you know he’s in the right place.

“We’re not just in here to learn to fight, we are here to teach people to box - we want kids to feel confident about themselves and to be able to protect themselves.”

Entertaining friends and family in our humble abodes When I look back and consider how often I used to open my home to friends and family I am amazed at the amount of dinners, birthdays and reasons just to get out my punchbowl. The house is smaller and there is no grand fireplace in the dining room but this week I am hosting a baby shower for a friend and I couldn’t be more excited to get out the punchbowl once again.

Entertaining is not without its stresses and preparation and I feel that many people think their house is unsuitable for inviting guests over. Let me reassure you there is nothing more stressful than hosting a gaggle of designers (my dear friends and co-workers) who have not seen the new house. To add to that horror, my house is not where I want it to be – not by a long shot.

As beautifully as this house was renovated before I purchased it, the previous owners forgot some important details, paramount being the kitchen and bathroom but my faithful readers know all about that.

My lights, what can I say about my horrible light fixtures? They need to be changed, there is a ceiling fan in every room which I abhor and to make them even more special the ceilings were sprayed without protecting the lights so there is a film of white on them that looks like dust – dust which can-

not be removed. Will these lights be changed by the date of the shower? Absolutely not.

Have I had a few moments of anxiety wondering what people will think? Absolutely.

Our homes are a direct reflection of us and we all want people to come through our doors and gasp in awe at our lovely decorating choices because this makes us a good person in their eyes. At least that is what we want to think. I’m sure that my moral character will not be at risk if people observe my sketchy lighting fixtures and my partially renovated bathroom. The joy and laughs we will share (not to mention the food) will be worth more in my bank of memory than hiding out until my house is perfect and I am looking forward to the company very much.

My best friend lives in Newfoundland and as a native Calgarian she was uneasy

her first few months on the island as she adjusted to the drop in atmosphere of her new home town. When we have company it is usually planned out weeks in advance and we stress and sweat over the condition and cleanliness of our home for every day preceding. It’s no mystery why we rarely have people over! The laid back neighbourly feel of the east coast is something to be envied as neighbours drop in on each other for everything from a quick cup of tea to ‘can I borrow your clothesline, mine just blew down in the storm’.

The weather is turning and we can emerge from our cocoons and welcome people into our homes, or even just our yards if we don’t feel our bathroom is clean enough.

Impacts of your credit score Your ‘beacon score’ is an indicator for a lender as to whether a client is likely to make payments on time and in full. Beacon (credit) scores are sometimes referred to as FICO scores, and both names are derived from the credit bureaus that developed the scoring system. Keeping track of this important number is vital. Inquiries to your score are recorded and tracked on the credit report as well. However not all inquiries are created equal.

Each time a creditor (potential lender) checks your credit report, a record is created of this event. There are two types of inquiries, soft and hard. A soft inquiry occurs when you pull your own credit report.

(Worth doing on an annual basis and free via mail at either Equifax or TransUnion.)

A hard inquiry occurs when submitting loan or credit applications with your written authorization to inquire. A lender cannot process a hard inquiry without your permission.

Hard inquires affect the score to varying degrees.

Multiple inquires that occur in a 14-day span are (typically) counted as just one inquiry. This helps those who are credit shopping (mortgages, personal loans, etc.) and need to have their credit pulled several times. Multiple inquiries are rarely the reason that people are denied credit, unless the score was borderline to start with.

This said, inquiries for ‘good debt’ such as a mortgage have far less impact on one’s credit score than multiple inquires for ‘bad debt’ such as a car loan/

lease or debt consolidation.

Only individuals with a specific business purpose can check your score.

Creditors, lenders, employers and landlords are some examples of approved business people. The inquiry only appears on the credit report that was checked.

Having a few inquiries in a period of a couple of weeks while determining whether to work with a specific mortgage broker will (in most cases) not have a notable negative impact on one’s credit score.

If your score is at or near 600 or 680 then one must be more cautious with inquires as this affects certain mortgage product availability. Working with an independent mortgage broker typically results in one inquiry on your bureau for the use of multiple lender partners of that broker. Thus more than one rate-hold can be placed with more than one lender without negative credit consequences via a broker.

Backyard entertaining essentials Spring and summer are the seasons to dust off the welcome mat and throw open your doors to friends and family.

Utilize your grill: a reliable, multifaceted grill allows you to cater to your guests by preparing traditional barbeque classics for large events, as well as mouth-watering speciality foods for more intimate gatherings. Equipping your grill with performance accessories can alleviate much of the pressure of grilling for your guests.

When hosting an outdoor dinner party with fewer guests, the focus is on preparing more elaborate dishes such as ribs.

An internal roasting rack keeps ribs elevated, allowing them to steam in their juices. With the right grill and accessories you are able to prepare your entire meal outdoors, allowing you to stay with your guests and keep the party going.

When hosting a large crowd there are a few options that allow your guests to grab at their leisure. Skewers are a great choice for grill masters looking to combine taste and convenience.

POLICE BRIEFS ARREST FOLLOWING WEAPONS INCIDENT On April 29th at 10 p.m. Red Deer RCMP officers responded to the report of two individuals fighting with knives in a business district of Red Deer. Upon police response, an altercation occurred between an individual and the police. The individual produced a long barrel firearm, however this weapon was never discharged.

A foot chase ensued and, with the assistance of a bystander, the individual was soon located in a dumpster. He was arrested and taken in custody by the officers.

Charges are pending and the matter remains under investigation. The police are requesting that if there were any witnesses to this incident, especially the bystander that assisted, please contact the Red Deer City RCMP at 403-4062300.

SUSPECTED IMPAIRED DRIVER ARRESTED Shortly before 10 p.m. on April 28th, Red Deer RCMP responded to a report of an impaired driver parked at the Village Mall.

Red Deer RCMP took two machete-wielding young men into custody on April 28th morning after catching them in the middle of an armed robbery at Express 24 Foodmart on Erickson Drive.

The call came in at 4:37 a.m. and RCMP were on scene within minutes, catching the two in the act of taking cash from the till after assaulting a staff member.

A second staff member in the back was able to call police as soon as he saw the two men enter the store wearing bandanas over their faces and carrying machetes.

The first staff member was sprayed with bear spray and was treated by EMS for minor physical injuries. The second staff member was not injured. The two armed robbers were taken into custody by police without further incident.

Red Deer RCMP arrested a man and a woman after an armed robbery at the Mac’s store on Ross Street, thanks to the actions of a quick-thinking staff member. At 11 p.m. on April 28th, a woman entered the Mac’s Convenience Store and brandished a screwdriver at the clerk, demanding cash and cigarettes. When she exited the store, the clerk ran outside and recorded the license plate of the waiting vehicle, noting a male driver.

Police arrived on scene immediately and, armed with surveillance images and the vehicle license plate, began aggressive patrols for the suspects.

At 11:45 pm, RCMP located the suspect vehicle at the downtown 7-Eleven; RCMP arrested the man as he waited in the car, and arrest-

ARREST AFTER CONFINEMENT The suspect taken into custody after a forcible confinement incident on April 28th at the Black Knight Inn in Red Deer is a 30-yearold Edmonton man.

He had been staying at the hotel with several other people who were not involved in the incident.

The suspect, who was extremely intoxicated, became aggressive with two male staff members at the Black Knight Inn, striking one with a metal pipe, and forcing another to jump down the laundry chute from the second floor.

RCMP responded, accompanied

by Police Dog Services; they arrested the suspect on the second floor.

Joel Pierre Doctor, 30, of Edmonton has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of forcible confinement and mischief over $5,000.

SUSPECT STILL SOUGHT Red Deer RCMP are searching for a man who robbed the Boston Pizza at 32nd St. and 50th Ave. at knifepoint on April 18th.

The suspect entered the restaurant undetected at 11 a.m. and attempted to open a locked cash register. When the suspect was discovered by a staff member, he grabbed the cash register key from her, took an undisclosed amount of cash from the register and ran out through the back door in an unknown direction of travel. RCMP conducted immediate sweeps of the area with assistance from Police Dog Services.

The suspect is described as Caucasian, about 5’8” tall with a skinny build. He is in his 20s or early 30s and was wearing a blue ski mask, a black hoodie and black pants. He was also brandishing a knife with a wooden handle.
