Artist’s House Heritage B&B

There is a rich patina of historical characters in the walls of the Artist’s House Heritage B&B. If the walls could talk, you could hear the echo’s of Rolf and Sarah Bruhn and their children Ted and Alvera who had the big house built in 1922 with the timbers from the Bruhn Lumber Company dragged up the hillside. You could hear the laughter from many a party with visiting dignitaries and perhaps hear the shouts from Mrs. Abercrombie as she tried to get out of the bomb shelter in the basement. Others to add to the patina of the house are beloved historian and Grade 1 school teacher Mrs. Dorothy Abercrombie and the Mackie brothers Norm and Gordon who lived here as boys in 1948. And the laughter of newspaper woman and artist Joyce Simpson still resonate here. Come and gaze at the panoramic view of the Shuswap, chart your course and hear the stories. The Artist’s House Heritage B&B is located at 20 Bruhn Rd. For further information, call your host Victoria Simpson at 250-836-3537 or toll free at 1-877-6023537. Sicamous & District Museum & Historical Society

Sicamous and the surrounding Eagle Valley is rich in history and the museum reflects much of this history in an eclectic collection of artifacts, from the Finlayson General Store to pioneer kitchen utensils, and archival material. Years ago, local businessman Allan Bell started collecting various artifacts with the hope they would, one day, be displayed in a permanent museum in the community. In 1982, Bell turned the collection over to the Eagle Valley Museum and Heritage Society. This society later amalgamated with the Historical Society to form the Sicamous & District Museum & Historical Society. The museum has moved to the new district hall on Main Street.

Houseboating

Snowmobiling

It’s a unique alternative to other activities. Houseboating isn’t just a pastime for the ultra-rich, many boats hold more than a dozen people and, if the costs are shared, it adds up to just dollars a day. Houseboating has been described by some as a floating tailgate party but keep in mind that drinking responsibly, as on land, is just as important when on a houseboat. Renting a houseboat is a good way to test drive different brands and types before making a purchase. If you are a responsible adult, you can operate a houseboat! Houseboats are a great platform for family reunions and other large gatherings. It is also a romantic alternative for an intimate getaway. Several restaurants along the shoreline of Shuswap Lake offer a chance to wine and dine your sweetheart before heading back to the seclusion of your floating love nest. And rain won’t even stop you from enjoying your vessel. Board games and cards can be moved inside without the worry of setting up a tarp or getting drenched in a downpour. Houseboating is often an addicting experience. Once you have got your feet wet, you are bound to return for houseboat fun year after year. Everything is right where you need it to be and there are no delayed flights, lost luggage or expensive fares.

Fabulous Sledding in the Eagle Valley, Sicamous, British Columbia. There are four major riding areas including Owl Head, Blue Lake, Queest Mountain and the Eagle Pass. The Eagle Valley Snowmobile Club holds trail management agreements for these areas and is groomed by the Eagle Valley Snowmobile Grooming Society. The trails to the alpine areas are groomed after 75 sleds have been recorded using the trails. Other areas used mostly by “locals” exist but trails to these areas are ungroomed and ‘secret’ unless you venture and hang out with the club often. Variety is the best description for the four areas because there is something for everyone. Blue Lake is the most popular area. It accommodates family riders and those who like to explore the backcountry without really steep terrain. The bunny hill in front of the Blue Lake cabin is perfect for novice and young riders. For those who like to go vertical, a little poking around reveals some great climbing areas to conquer, get stuck or keep snowmobile dealers in the repair business. Blue Lake has a fabulous new cabin to have lunch or warm-up in, located in the wide open riding area. On a foggy day when the mist is thick on Owl Head or Queest, chances are Blue Lake will be clear enough to play in the area around the cabin or do a little boon-docking in the trees.
