NEWS Tax turmoil for elderly couple

An elderly couple living at Casa Loma received an unwelcome shock come tax time this year.

The 83-year-old man and his 91-year-old wife were “upgraded” by Retirement Concepts, from assisted living status, to independent living status.

Doug Steedman questions how his wife Rose, who is blind, deaf and confined to a wheelchair, could possibly be considered independent.

Deb Paterson is concerned that a technicality at Retirement Concepts is going to reduce medical expenses that seniors such as her parents can claim on income tax returns.

Her parents, Doug and Rose Steedman, have resided at the Comox Valley Seniors Village (Casa Loma) since Dec. 1, 2010. It’s owned by Retirement Concepts. A contract classifies the couple as assisted living.

Paterson, herself a senior, has met several times with the company.

“I did my father’s income tax and now he owes four grand this year,” she said. “I don’t know why.”

Rose, 91, has been in a wheelchair since 2011 due to various medical conditions. Doug, 83, is in “fair condition” but Paterson says her father can no longer cook, clean or tend to Rose full-time, which is why they are in assisted living.

When she first lived at Casa Loma, Rose was using a walker. She now requires a lift to transfer from her bed to a wheelchair. She is also legally blind, and struggles to hear even with hearing aids.

“She has nursing assistance each morning. I would hardly class that as independent living,” Paterson said.

A significant amount of her parents’ $4,000-plus per month rent pays for access to medical and non-medical attendants. These fees are tax deductible by seniors.

“We put my mom and dad in there so they could get the help. We’re willing to pay for it. But they should be getting some sort of a deduction for all these attendants that they’re paying for, and they were, until February when we went to get this year’s income tax receipt.”

In February, receipts from Retirement Concepts said attendant care expenses were zero for her parents.

Doug was told they were no longer classified as assisted living. The receipt stated independent living.

A second invoice said assisted living and zero expenses.

“How can that possibly be?” Paterson said. “I don’t know what they’re playing at. They are still charging the rent but they’re not giving any offsetting write-offs for the amount of

RD wants old ski hill cleaned up

Edwin Grieve, Area C director of the Comox Valley Regional District, has penned a letter to Premier Christy Clark about the unsightliness of the old Forbidden Plateau ski hill and surrounding area on Mt. Beecher and Wood Mountain, which is a Class C provincial park.

In the letter — approved last week by the CVRD board — Grieve notes potential environmental and public safety concerns since 1999 when the lodge suffered a collapsed roof. In February of 2002, remaining lodge structures were destroyed by fire.

The board is requesting government to approve funding to commence clean-up and remediation of the area as soon as possible.

Strathcona Wilderness Institute AGM

The 20th Annual General Meeting of the Strathcona Wilderness Institute takes place Wednesday, May 6 in the Evergreen Lounge (lower floor) at the Florence Filberg Centre from 7-9 p.m.

As a non-profit organization, the Strathcona Wilderness Institute board of directors will answer questions about Strathcona Park and their summer programs at the Paradise Meadows Wilderness Information Centre, or at the Information Centre at Buttle Lake.

Due to low winter precipitation, organizers have pulled the plug on the Puntledge River Paddle Festival, scheduled for later this month.

Posting on their Facebook page, organizer David Prothero said the decision was made as there is no rain in the forecast leading up to the event.

“This is a hard call as the Puntledge is a great river, but (we made the decision) in the interest of the community and water conservation. We hope for the next winter to (be) kinder with more snow on the hills, thus more water.”

The festival was scheduled for May 29-31.

BC Hydro works with the festival, ensuring the timing of the planned spill is part of water level management, not just for the festival but also to aid fish habitat.

Stephen Watson, stakeholder engagement and communications officer for BC Hydro on Vancouver Island, said he was first made aware of the cancellation when contacted by The Record, but added he will be meeting with organizers later this week.

“Our system is at 20 per cent capacity; we’re not getting any water in the reservoir - it’s full but we still essentially have another month to go,” he explained.

“We’re pursuing other avenues … it’s a challenging situation.”

Watson confirmed the festival has never been cancelled, and even went ahead last year, which was the driest year on record.

Four local wineries are taking part in a Courtenay Centennial initiative that will help to raise money for the Centennial Legacy Endowment Fund.

The participating wineries are 40 Knots, Blue Moon, Beaufort and Coastal Black.

Each winery will be donating $0.25 per bottle of selected local wines sold between May 1 and September 30.

That was the message around the Comox Valley Airport Friday, as the inaugural twice-daily Air Canada flight landed from Vancouver.

Fire protection service for Mount Washington to be studied A total of $35,000 from an Area C fund will be committed to investigate the feasibility of a fire protection service for the Mount Washington community.

In February, a late night fire destroyed three cabins on Mount Washington. They were left to burn because the area does not have fire protection.

Deborah McGhie and her son, Michael Wright, thought they had seen the last of their Chihuahua named Cara.

But thanks to the efforts of the community, social media and a man driving home from work, they were re-united with their tiny dog after the 15-month-old disappeared for a night.

On April 16, Wright was walking Cara — a rescue from the SPCA — at the Air Park. The dog ran away when her harness snapped off.

By the time McGhie arrived, there were about six people searching for Cara in a bushy area.

“We looked for her until dark, and went back at night with flashlights,” said McGhie, who recently moved from Pitt Meadows to Courtenay.

The dog wasn’t seen until morning. She was first spotted at Comox Bay Farm, then Back Road, and then near Spitfire and Tutor in Comox where she was eventually found — several kilometres from the Air Park.

Mike Paroshy was driving on Spitfire Drive with his dog Chester, a golden retriever. He noticed something which he first thought was a rabbit. But recalling Cara’s pink collar from a Facebook image, he managed to retrieve the dog by getting her up against a fence.

Paroshy refused to accept reward money.

“What surprised me, I have never seen people come out like this,” McGhie said. “There must have been at some point 20 people out there looking. People that didn’t even know us.

Expect less

I

t’s time to expect less from our governments.

Lists and their parameters vary, but most rankings have Canadians inside the top 10 of the most heavily-taxed residents in the world.

Canadians hold health care and education near and dear.

We should.

Despite wait times and frustrations, we can anecdotally be proud of our universal health care and education systems. Just don’t call it free. Health care and education spending rise every year, regardless of which party is in power in Ottawa or Victoria. Technological advances and the accompanying gadgets/miracle machines are more and more expensive to buy every year. Staff, union or not, generally cost more every year. On average, provinces spend approximately 40 per cent of their total budgets on health care (source: healthcarefunding.ca). Education funding, as a percentage of provincial budgets, is a more difficult number to research, but from what we could find, 15-20 per cent is in the ball park.

That means, conservatively, 60 per cent of the provincial government’s budget is spent on health care and education. And that’s not going to decline any year soon as the population continues to age.

All of this means there is less money for anything other than the basics.

What can be done other than lower our expectations? The easy answer is to raise taxes. We do not favour that route, as we believe more money in the pockets of residents makes for better local economies. Allow for more private healthcare facilities? The theory here is those who can afford it can pay for it, taking themselves out of the public-waiting-list logjam, freeing up time in operating rooms for the rest of us. The concept seems sacrilegious to some, almost anti-Canadian, but it may provide relief we most certainly need.

Forgive us, Tommy Douglas, but the way healthcare costs are spiraling, we need to find a way to keep some form of universal healthcare alive for future generations.

Cuts will hurt schoolchildren ■ Nick Moore Guest Column

In the 2014-15 school year, School District 71 had to cut $2.2 million due to declining enrolment and under-funding from the provincial government. Trustees are now trying to figure out how to cut another $2.2 million from next year’s budget – an impossible task to do without directly affecting services to our most vulnerable students.

This means that if your child has learning challenges and receives help from a learning support teacher, there will be days when she will not get help because LSTs and other specialist teachers may not be replaced on the first day they are off sick.

If your child is supported by an educational assistant because of a documented learning disability, there will be days when he will not be supported because many EAs are not replaced on the first day they are away for budget reasons.

Office administrative assistants and library clerks are now re-deployed to be lunch time supervisors which means that there is no coverage in the office and your child may

not be able to access the library at lunch or during the library clerk’s lunch break.

Custodians are often not replaced when they are off sick so your child may have to sit at a sticky desk with crumbs left over from yesterday’s lunch because the remaining one custodian just doesn’t have the time to get to the entire school.

If your child has a suspected learning difficulty, you can expect a wait of two to three years for a psycho-educational assessment, if they are assessed at all. Some schools, due to a limited number of educational psychologists are slated for only a few assessments a year.

To receive additional funding for support from the Ministry of Education, your child needs to have at least a psycho-educational assessment to be designated into a specific category. But even a designation does not guarantee extra funding.

There are over 100 students diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum in the Comox Valley. Currently, there is one autism specialist teacher.

Your child with a severe stutter or speech/language disability which is impacting her social and academic success will see a speech and language pathologist about once a week for about half an hour. This is only if your child has a level of severity and

reaches the top of the priority list.

Many children are never seen.

There are just not enough teaching specialists or EAs to help the students who do need the extra help, and the teacher’s time must divided between all his students; more often than not there just isn’t enough time because 80 per cent of a teacher’s time is taken up by 20 per cent of the students who need the additional support.

Teachers are given the time and resources to run 100 metres and are asked to run a marathon.

You will read much rhetoric from all education stakeholder including teachers, support workers, the provincial government and the local school board of trustees on the woes of the economy and the underfunded system. As a parent, you will live with these realities every day.

If you are wealthy enough, you can send your child away to a private school. If you are a concerned citizen, you will lobby the government to set their priorities on our children. They are the future of our society and deserve nothing less.

Every single parent in the Comox Valley needs to make an appointment with MLA Don McRae to express their concern to him.

Regional District votes against transparency Dear editor, Recently, Comox Valley Regional District director Larry Jangula brought forward a motion to require that all directors’ votes be recorded and become public record with published meeting minutes. Such a change would provide taxpayers and constituents with a clear and accurate record of how each director voted and what their individual actions were concerning every matter at the board table.

All of the Valley’s municipal councils record how each member votes and their meetings are video recorded and broadcast in local television media, providing the public with a clear and transparent look at how their affairs are being managed at the three City Halls. In sharp contrast, the Regional District not only does not record and publish their meeting voting records, nor are these meetings video recorded.

Because our Regional District represents a much larger and more diverse geographic area than the municipalities, attending the meetings which are held earlier in the day is a real challenge for most of us.

Today, personally attending these meetings is the only way each of us are able to know how their directors are representing them and managing their interests on issues that affect all of us.

So, it would seem that our directors would support Jangula’s motion and adopt a policy that is not only practised by all other Valley governmental agencies, but is the customary practice across Canada.

This change would not cost taxpayers a dime and at the same time it

would improve the transparency and accountability at the RD. Surprisingly, the motion was defeated!

Voting for the motion were Jangula, Manno Theos, Barbara Price and Ken Grant.

Voting against the motion were Bruce Jolliffe, Edwin Grieve, Rod Nichol, Bob Wells, and Gwyn Sproule.

Director Eriksson was absent.

It is difficult to understand why the five directors would choose to deny our community and those they were elected to represent the knowledge of what their actions are when conducting the people’s business.

If you believe that the RD director voting record should become part of the public record and be included in the published Regional District minutes please contact your director and tell them how you feel. It’s the right thing to do.

Island Health planning to contract out surgeries Dear editor, Re: Delivery of relief during disasters.

I’ve been watching these great cargo planes lumbering into Kathmandu, filled to the gills with stuff, that even when offloaded, can’t get anywhere fast because the roads are not much good for wheeled vehicles.

So I’m wondering why some bright souls could not invent a more dynamic (ah yes aerodynamic) method of ‘relief’ delivery that would entail saturation bombing the troubled areas with thousands of parachute-enabled sacks each containing, what? - just Google “Emergency Kits” to find suppliers who would be ready, able and

willing.

Some team of applied mathematicians could have fun figuring out how to get the bags/sacks/back packs to string out from the tail door of the plane, separate, and ensure that the parachutes open for their gentle drift to earth. (Or maybe delivery by drones?)

Some may fear that this would lead to mayhem as fighting breaks out for possession of these treasures. The solution is in the abundance of the drop. Cheaper by far than bombs.

Doctor’s decision saddens family

Dear editor, I am saddened by the news that Dr. Stocks will not be returning to her practice.

I would like to thank Dr. Stocks for her care over the past years for my husband George and me, especially those last seven and a half months of his life he spent in 2010 at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Thank you for your kindness, care and attention then and over the years which was so much appreciated and will not go unremembered.

One of the province’s most successful therapy dog programs just added a few members to its roster.

The Comox Valley St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program qualified four new dogs – and their owners – this week.

The new dogs to the program include a keeshond named Indy, a standard poodle named Emilee, a shortcoat collie named Blue, and Chay, a Great Pyrenees.

The newcomers will have plenty of work to keep them busy. The local program makes regular stops at seven schools, four seniors’ centres, as well as St. Joseph’s Hospital.

“We have 36 dogs now, with the new ones coming in this week,” said program facilitator Dave Fletcher. “The therapy dog division itself did 5,555 hours of community work locally last year. So, we are a busy lot.

“Those numbers make us the busiest on the Island and second overall in B.C., behind only Kelowna.”

The qualification procedure includes a two-hour meeting and a 90-minute evaluation, or “practical” test, with dog and owner.

“Not all the dogs pass – we test for obedience, temperament and socialization,” said Fletcher. “We have about a dozen scenarios, to see how the dog reacts in unfamiliar circumstances – how it responds around wheelchairs, canes, crutches and all that sort of stuff.”

History

The St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program started in Peterborough, Ont. in 1992.

It quickly spread across the country, arriving in B.C. in 1999. By December of that year, the program had reached the Comox Valley.

Fletcher was in the very first class.

“It started out just working at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Now we are at St. Joe’s – both The Views and the psych ward. We are in Glacier View Lodge, Casa Loma Seniors’ Village, Cumberland Care and Abbeyfield House,” he said. “Schools-wise we are in five elementary schools and two senior high schools.”

At Mark Isfeld, the dogs are used in a lifeskills class.

“This is the fourth year that lifeskills has participat-

ed in the therapy dog program,” said lifeskills teacher Keith Keller.

“The dogs have positive effects on various students in various ways. For example, we have a non-verbal, physically dependent student who doesn’t react in a big way to much of the activity around her, but who lights up when the dogs enter the room. They will jump up and sit on a chair beside her and allow her to dig her hand into their soft fur.

“Another example is a lifeskills student who used to be terrified of dogs. After four years of having the dogs in our classroom... he has lost much of that fear – to the point where he can even be encouraged to pat them at times. This behaviour has now generalized – he can walk in the community while only giving dogs a wide berth rather than panicking as he used to.”

Fletcher said there are some lasting memories that come with dog therapy sessions.

“Dementia patients, they may not remember their spouse, they may not remember their children, but they always seem to remember they had pets,” he said. “I had one chap, sitting there with my Magic (Fletcher’s dog, a Samoyed) and he said ‘Snowball! My dog’s name was Snowball!’ – because he had the same breed of dog.

The dog was her homework North Island College nursing student Kyra Devers has first-hand experience with the benefits of therapy dogs.

“When I was 15, I was super depressed with the usual hormone issues, and my parents got me a dog. I had it for 10 years and the benefits that dog gave me... she made me happy,” said Devers. “Suddenly I was getting up in the morning, just to take her for a walk, whereas before that I would sleep all day. So I always appreciated her.”

Her experience was one source of inspiration for a college paper she wrote on the subject.

She said that using animals in a therapeutic manner is quite an old method. She has even found quotes from Florence Nightingale – the founder of modern nursing – saying that for long-term patients, having a pet to interact with can help with the healing process.

She received an ‘A’ on her paper.

Devers also provided a practical application of therapy dogs at the college during final exam week.

“This entire semester in school I have been tutoring the second-year students in pathology,” she said. “So I arranged through Dave to get some dogs brought out just before the final exam. I remember writing that exam a year ago and everyone was anxious, everyone was worried.

Pathology is a pretty hard topic.

“It’s been proven that petting a dog releases endorphins and increases cortisol level, increases serotonin, can lower your blood pressure... and in that way I was hoping that the students would relate to the dogs, would de-stress, and there wouldn’t be that tension when they went in for their exam. I mean I am sure there still was (tension), but people were laughing and joking as they went in, and it looked like I left them in a great atmosphere. I was really happy with how it turned out.”

So says the “salesperson”. What about the students themselves?

Karin Gage was one of those stressing outside the auditorium on exam day. She attested that the dogs had the desired effect.

“I found the dogs to be very relaxing and playful which helped take the stress and anxiety away from writing a final exam,” said Gage. “I do not have a dog of my own to provide me with a relaxing mindset, so having these dogs to pet before an exam was wonderful.”

Fletcher said anyone interested in registering their dog for the pet therapy program is welcome to call the local St. John Ambulance office, to get the process started.

Size of the dogs is not an issue.

“We’ve had everything from a three-pound Yorkie to a 100-pound Great Dane,” said Fletcher. “In fact, one of the new ones this week is a 110-pound Pyrenees.”

Free Toastmasters session Given recent business closures in the Comox Valley, Comox Toastmasters is offering a free information session May 26 on how Toastmasters can help you in job interviews and become more effective at work. With over 90 years, Toastmasters has been helping members to improve their communication and leadership skills.

To get hired, you will need the eloquence in expressing your strengths and answering interview questions. Once hired, you will need to continually demonstrate your communication and leadership skills to get promoted. All these skills can be learned in the supportive environment of Toastmasters meetings.

During the free event, there will be three speakers who will discuss different aspects of finding a job and advancing at work. Kristin Nickells, a business coach for successful dentists, will illustrate the importance of being able to express yourself with no preparation. As one who has interviewed many potential employees,

Sheila Pickard is a business owner and 10-year Toastmaster member. She will share how to improve employment opportunity using the three Cs: Clarity, Conversations and Communication. The three Cs will apply to everyone including potential employees, employers and family. Pickard will share how these skills could be learned from and practised at

Toastmasters.

Harry Piercy, a carpenter and volunteer ski patroller, will discuss how Toastmasters has helped him gain more business contracts. Specifically, he learned to be a better listener with clients, understanding their wants and needs, and making fewer mistakes at work.

Following this special meeting, all subsequent weekly meetings will feature education sessions on presentation organization, body language, persuasion and audience inspiration.

These are fundamental skills in being able to convey

your message clearly and effectively. Plus, guests and members will hone their impromptu speaking skills with table topics — an opportunity to speak on a topic off the cuff. In addition, every meeting consists of prepared speeches on favourite topics with specific objectives, such as using visual aids and storytelling. Speakers are provided with supportive evaluation. Meetings are a safe and positive environment to practise public speaking.

Valley winery opens new tasting room The tasting room at Beaufort Vineyard and Estate Winery has been known by locals and out of town guests as an intimate little spot to try some great wines on a hot summer afternoon. While wanting to preserve that cozy atmosphere, the Cameron family proprietors, general manager Mark Timmermans, and winemakers Susan and Jeff Vandermolen, all felt that a little more space would go a long way.

So, while the vines have had the winter off, the rest of the crew at Beaufort has been working hard on a re-invention of the old barn at the back of the vineyard.

“We used the same footprint, roofline and interior configuration, as well as all salvageable wood from the original structure, so the feeling created

in the new space is a great combination of old and new, rustic and comfortable, functional and funky,” Timmermans said.

Coinciding with the opening of the new tasting room is the release of the 2014 white wines that

Beaufort has become known for. The multiple award winning Ortega is tasting like one of the best yet according to Susan.

“Thanks to the long, hot summer in the Comox Valley in 2014, the Beaufort signature grape varietals like Ortega, Siegerrebe and Schonburger had beautiful fruit and were harvested at the perfect times for excellent winemaking,” she said.

The new tasting room opens for case club members on May 9, and to the public on May 14.

Beaufort will be open until the end of August on Thursdays through Saturdays from noon until 5 p.m.

When he visits the Comox Valley this Friday, Brendan McLeod will do something he has never done.

The acclaimed spoken-word artist, a former Canadian slam poetry champion, will appear in that context May 8 at the Sid Williams Theatre, as part of the theatre society’s Blue Circle Series.

He will also perform as a musician in The Fugitives band on the same bill.

“I’m psyched for this show because I have been touring for 10 years now with myself and The Fugitives, and I’ve never done the two the same night.

This is the first booker who’s ever asked for that.”

Recently returned from alternating business and pleasure in Spain and Berlin, McLeod spoke from his new base in Toronto after a move from Vancouver.

A poet, novelist, spoken-word-artist, comedian, songwriter and musician, McLeod never lacks for things to keep him busy, and creative.

“I’m writing this monologue right now, which I’m just finishing and I’m doing this other show with this pianist who plays Rachmaninoff. I’m doing a full show with her, so she does this certain opus that he wrote and in between the music, I do

spoken word to that.

“And I’m writing a book, so I work on those three projects depending on the day. It’s nice when I have that many things working because one day you just don’t feel like writing something and … you might feel like writing a different project.

“It’s nice to be able to switch back and forth between them.”

He can clearly compartmentalize his brain, but does McLeod ever feel a desire or a need to pick something and specialize?

“I tried to specialize a couple of years ago,” he responds. “I really wanted to finish a book, and it just didn’t happen, so I just kept doing all the things.”

His membership in The Fugi-

tives is a good example.

“Every album with the band, we’re not sure if we’re going to do another one (album) and we just wait and see if … people want to do it.”

One reason to record another album is the praise the band has earned.

The Fugitives, fronted by McLeod and fellow songwriter

Adrian Glynn, have been nominated for multiple Canadian Folk Music Awards and a Western Canadian Music Award.

They recently finished a Canadian tour opening for Buffy Sainte-Marie, and a European tour that included Glastonbury, England.

Their music has been described as “an inventive piece of art,” “tight, well-composed music that demonstrates great lyrical ability,” “poignant,” “eclectic and exciting,” and “infectious.”

He describes himself as a classic singer-songwriter and is modest about his musical talents.

“The Fugitives, they’re all good musicians but I am like the wimp of the bunch.”

While McLeod downplays his abilities as a musician, there’s no question he’s strong with the language.

“I’ve always wanted to write.

I’ve wanted to be a novelist since I was about 16, maybe even before that.”

His mom recently discovered a 35-page novel he wrote in Grade 6.

YANA to be the benefactor of tonight’s 1st Tuesday Fundraiser

Darwin Gagne of Campbell River will be performing an evening concert at the Mex Pub on May 5 as guest performer of the 1st Tuesday Fundraisers.

His last band “Elmer Thudd” played around Campbell River and the Comox Valley for many years, and audiences enjoy his guitar work on renditions of popular songs by James Taylor, Stevie Wonder and Billy Joel.

Although the band is no longer playing, Darwin continues to play where he can, such as

house parties and open mics.

“I play whatever music catches my mood of the moment, and so I end up with an eclectic mixture of cover tunes and some original music,” says Darwin.

Admission to the evening concert is by donation, and proceeds will go to YANA (you can bring a non-perishable food item for the Comox Valley Food Bank).

“We’re grateful to be included again, and happy that Darwin Gagne has chosen to support YANA and the local families

that access our services with his music,” says Ocean Varney, community relations co-ordinator at YANA. For those new to the Comox Valley, YANA is a locally founded charity that provides financial assistance to families of the Comox Valley whose children need to access medical services that are not available locally.

The organization provides out of town accommodation, and travel assistance so that families can stay together during

stressful times of uncertainty.

Founded in 1986, YANA has been near and dear to the hearts of valley residents, helping thousands of families by funding medical trips to Vancouver, Victoria, Toronto, as well as the U.S. Many local families have been helped through the organization’s fundraising, which relies on the generous support of local residents and businesses.

Homegrown jazz at the Av Expect another musical treat, as the Georgia Strait Big Band performs tunes made famous by The Count, Gillespie and Ellington and all expertly led by conductor Greg Bush (professor of jazz studies at Vancouver Island University) when Comox Valley’s very own 19-person Big Band hits the Avalanche stage this Thursday at 7:30 pm.

The Georgia Strait Big Band is continuing a music legacy in the Valley dating back over 70 years, when Big Band Saturday night dances were held at the Native Sons’ Hall....way back when in the post-war years. In recent years, the band has gone through a renaissance thanks to the dedication of Greg Bush who, for the past eight years has travelled weekly from his home in Nanaimo to support and direct Big Band music in the Valley.

SPORTS Reynolds doubles up on bursaries Comox Valley cyclist Jessica Reynolds was a double winner at a bursary awards ceremony in Nanaimo.

On Friday, May 1, Pacific Sport Vancouver Island held their annual awards ceremony at the Woodgrove Pines Clinic Nanaimo to honour some of Vancouver Island’s most successful young athletes.

In all, 20 promising young athletes from across Vancouver Island involved in a wide range of sports received $500 Pacific Sport Athletic Bursaries. In addition, four of those athletes were selected to receive the Woodgrove Pines Clinic $500 Bursary.

It was the second year in a row that local road and track cyclist Reynolds was selected to receive both prestigious awards. Her road racing accomplishments during the 2014 season included winning the

U17 Female category of the Mutual of Enumclaw Stage Race (largest stage race in

the Pacific Northwest) and sweeping all U17 events at the Robert Cameron Law

Series Race in Victoria.

On the track, she finished first in the U17 Washington State Track Championship, finished second in the BC Premiere Series and third at the BC Provincial Championships.

She also had an exciting season in the team track cycling events, winning the BC Provincial Team Sprint Championship (Victoria) and the Washington State Team Sprint Championship (Redmond), and ending her season by finishing third in Team Pursuit and fourth in Team Sprint at the Canadian National Track Cycling Championships (Burnaby).

Reynolds was recently invited to ride for the Victoria-based Dr. Walker Cycling Team for the 2015 season and was also selected as a member of the Cycling BC High Performance Provincial Road and Track Cycling Teams.

Mountain bike race season off to a great start Cumberland’s legendary mountain bike trails have been busy this spring as the United Riders of Cumberland (UROC) hosted two big Island Cup events in April.

A record turnout of more than 180 riders participated in the Cumberland XC mountain bike race on April 12.

The third race of the Island Cup XC series was Cumberland’s first race of the season and featured a new course for racers as well as a fun, supervised group ride for children.

Taking top spot in their respective categories were: Expert Men: Kory Wallace, Kona Factory Team. Expert Women: Mical Dyck, Stan’s No Tubes. Intermediate Men: Dave Opko, Texada Island. Intermediate Women: Emily Johnston, Trail Bikes. Beginner Men: Haiden Simpson, Port Alberni. Beginner Women: Pauline Robinson, Williams Lake.

On April 19, UROC hosted the Dodge City DH, the only downhill race on the Island this year. This year’s race featured an updated course and a single crown fork category and attracted

Secret lives of grizzlies The Comox Valley Paddlers Club is pleased to welcome interpretive naturalist and photographer Derek Kyostia as their guest speaker at the final meeting of the 2014/2015 winter season.

Derek’s presentation, Born to Be Wild – The Secret Lives of Grizzly Bears will be an opportunity to delve into the fascinating natural history of Ursus Horribilus and discover what truly amazing animals they are. It will serve to dispel many of the myths and misunderstandings that people have, not just about grizzlies but about bears in general.

Backed by extensive periods spent in the field, Derek offers a personal, informed and often humorous reminder that these magnificent creatures need not be feared but simply respected and appreciated.

Raised on the wild north shore of Lake Superior, Derek moved west and worked for nearly a decade in remote fisheries up and down the coast of British Columbia. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in biology, a Master Captains

of the Arctic and the penguins of Antarctica.

Derek’s presentation commences at 7 p.m., Thursday, May 7 at the Lion’s Den, 1729 Comox Ave., in Comox (behind the Pearl Ellis Art Gallery).

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The event is free of charge and non-members are welcome.

Contrary to information provided to the Record, the Coast Guard was not involved in the decision to cancel the canoe leg of the Royal LePage Comox Valley Snow to Surf Adventure Relay Race on April 26.

“We have had a great relationship with Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue (RCMSAR) over the past 20-plus years and we feel that a decision to cancel any portion of the event must be made collaboratively with our support volunteers,” said race chairman Rick Gibson.

“On Sunday RCMSAR let us know that the water was very rough and they recommended that the canoe be cancelled. As safety is our paramount concern, we cancelled the leg based on their recommendation.”

PUBLIC NOTICE WATER MAIN FLUSHING and FIRE HYDRANT MAINTENANCE (April 20 – May 22, 2015) The Town of Comox wishes to advise residents that the Public Works Department will be proceeding with the annual flushing of water mains and maintenance of all fire hydrants within the Town of Comox. This program will commence on Monday, April 20, 2015 and should be completed by Friday, May 22, 2015. All work will take place from Monday to Friday between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm.

This program may result in temporary but harmless discolouration of the water.

Should this occur, running a cold water tap for a short period will help to restore water quality to normal. Where practical, residents should avoid washing laundry during operational hours as to do so could result in discoloration of clothes.

CORFIELD, George Treffry May 8, 1928 – April 16, 2015

George died in his home in West Vancouver. He is survived by Valerie, his ever loving and well-loved wife of nearly 50 years, and his sisters, Sheelagh and Bunty. He will be greatly missed and remembered for his kindness, sense of humour and great love of his garden. George was born in Comox and lived in Courtenay until he left home for university in New Mexico. He returned to Vancouver and worked as an Architect with H.A Simons until his retirement. He kept in touch with his high school, university and work friends. No service by request. In his memory please consider a donation to a charity of your choice.

McGee, Alexander Joseph Alex embarked on the personal journey to his spiritual resting place on April 21, 2015 at the wise old age of 87. He departed quietly in the early morning from Glazier View Lodge in Comox B.C. where the spiralling narrative of his life brought him back to his roots, having arrived into this world on December 19, 1927 at Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Comox B.C. Alex was the ďŹ fth of eight children born of Maude (nee: Pickles) of Denman Island and John (Jack) McGee of County Antrim, Northern Ireland. He is predeceased by his parents and older brothers John and Gordon, and sisters Jessie and Annie.

He is survived by his dear sister Nora Fuller and younger brothers James and Norman, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Alex was an avid gardener and if he wasn’t at his iconic “shack� in Fanny Bay, he could usually be found toiling away in his cherished garden. He had an appreciation for solitude, but also delighted in visits from family and friends whom he welcomed into his home with open arms and an open heart.

Always ready with a captivating story and welcome treats, he was a man of family loyalty and integrity who lived his life modestly, appreciating the simple pleasures of life. Alex loved writing letters and collecting coins, like memories deposited into the bank of life, they gathered his interest and with an eye for detail, he watched the tapestry of his life unfold as he chose.

He believed in intuition and followed his gut instincts, which in his day, “witched� him many a good well! He was a strong, hardworking man who earned the nickname, “The Tiger�.

Alex worked in a few occupations including farming, the timber industry, the shellďŹ sh industry and of course tilling his land, which bring thoughts of his legacy to this simple and touching poem by an unknown author; “Something Beautiful Remainsâ€?

The tide recedes, but leaves behind bright seashells on the sand.

The sun goes down, but gentle warmth still lingers in the land.

The music stops, and yet it echoes on in sweet refrains.

Gail (Beer) Petersen July 13, 1942 - April 19, 2015 (Dorothy) Gail was born on July 13, 1942 in Pincher Creek, to Audrey & Cecil Beer. She sadly passed away on April 19, 2015 in Merville, BC, surrounded by love and family.

Gail married her high school sweetheart and love of her life, Donald Petersen in 1962, and together they were blessed with three children, Bob, Sherry and Joanne. Sadly Donny passed away on June 3, 1973. Gail and the kids lived in Yellowknife for a short time, before making their home on Vancouver Island, at the ocean that she loved so much.

Gail worked hard and accomplished much in her life, and raised three amazing people. Her family is forever grateful to each of them as well as their partners, and each of Gail’s grandkids for showing her such compassion, respect and unconditional love. She taught you well.

Gail is survived by, and will be deeply missed by her children, Bob (Kim), Sherry (Ferg) and Joanne (Fredy), as well as her cherished grandchildren, Zack, Dawn, Brandon, Lee, Stacy, Devin, Maddy, and great-grandson Ryder. Gail is also survived and loved dearly by her mother Audrey Beer, her sisters Linda (Phil), Betty (Larry), Wendy (Jerry), Marj (Mike) & Carol, and her brother Jim (Celeste).

She will always be remembered with love by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Gail was predeceased by her father Cecil Beer, her husband Don Petersen, and grandsons Kyle and Tyler. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know and love her.

A gathering to celebrate Gail’s life will be held at Kitty Coleman Beach picnic area Saturday, May 9 at 1 PM. If so desired, donations may be made the Canadian Cancer Society. “If there ever comes a day where we can’t be together, keep me in your heart, I’ll stay there forever“

Norma Marion Kenny (Sinclair) Kenny, Norma Marion (Sinclair), at age 93 in Comox, BC. Beloved wife of Robert Avery Kenny (deceased 2009). Dearest Mom of Sheila (Chris), Scott (Linda), Anne, and Mark all of Vancouver Island. Deeply loved by her grandchildren Erin (Ryan), Nicole (Mike), Michelle (Marc), Kerri, Laura (Scott), Cody and Lindsey (and their mother Brenda). Survived by younger sisters Frances and Mary, predeceased by her brothers Douglas and Harold and by her cousins Miriam and Kathy. Fondly remembered by her longtime friend Marjorie Jones and by nieces and nephews, especially her niece Lynda (Eric).

During her time in Port Perry, Ont., Mom was very active, raising her four children and supporting Dad with the family mink ranch. She also really enjoyed the “ladies of the bridge club�, curling, and Anglican Church activities. After she and Dad moved to Vancouver Island in 1988, she devoted a great deal of time and energy to the Woolgatherer’s Spinning and Weaving club, and to the D’Esterre Seniors’ group. She was always interested in exercise and in learning new things. She enjoyed all kinds of travel, from Rock and Mineral Club expeditions with Dad, to world destinations such as Ireland and New Zealand (when she was 89). She proudly attended the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. Through it all, her biggest devotion and joy was for her family, all of whom looked up to her, honoured and appreciated her for her calm acceptance, support and unconditional love.

Jean Hannah McConnell was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on May 4, 1920 to Martha and Charles Young and died on April 25, 2015 at the Comox Valley Seniors Village.

Jean grew up in Fort Whyte just south of Winnipeg. She met her future husband, Grant, at a dance in Fort Whyte and they were married in 1943. Grant’s airforce career had them stationed in Swift Current, Moose Jaw, Souris, Portage La Prairie, Rivers, Edmonton, Zweibrucken and Comox. Jean loved her four years in Germany and the family was fortunate to be able to travel to many European countries. In 1963 Jean and Grant built a house in Little River and lived there happily for more than thirty years before moving to a condo in Comox.

When Grant passed away, Jean moved into Berwick where she spent six happy years. As her health began to fail sixteen months ago, she was then lovingly cared for by the staff at Comox Valley Seniors Village.

Jean was a loving, caring, generous person and an elegant lady. She loved her family and friends and willingly went out of her way to help anyone in need. She loved to sing, dance, cook and entertain in style. Guests were warmly welcomed to her home and instantly offered a cup of tea. Jean was an active member of the St. Peter’s congregation for many years.

She was a keen volunteer and sang in many church choirs. Jean will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

She was predeceased by her parents, her brother, Joe Young, and her loving husband of sixty years, Grant McConnell. She is survived by her sister Lois (Cliffe) Johanson, son Glen McConnell (Susan), daughter Janis Cousins (Doug), grandchildren Kevin (Tracy), Greg (Karyn), Alynne (Kerry) Penner, Amy and Adrienne and great grandchildren Christina, Esme, Fable, Hannah, Evan and Nathan as well as nieces and nephews in Calgary and Minnesota.

The family would like to extend many thanks to the amazing staffs at Berwick and the Seniors Village for the wonderful care they gave Jean as well as to Dr. Anderson for his kind and patient attention for many years.

The service will be held at St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Comox on May 9, 2015 at 12:00 noon. Any donations in Jean’s name to St. Peter’s would be warmly welcomed.
