t’s mid-morning at Peavey Industries’ Riverside Heavy Industrial Park distribution centre and things are hopping in the 180,000-square-foot building. A computer-controlled inventory system helps staff choose from more than 25,000 products to prepare a storespecific mix of merchandise for delivery to the Red Deer company’s 34 Peavey Marts and MainStreet Hardware outlets across Western Canada. Dawson Creek, B.C., to Winnipeg. At the receiving end, rural and urban customers are drawn by Peavey Mart’s familiar catchphrase: “Hardware & A Whole Lot More!” That “whole lot more” includes everything from tractor parts to toys, and from chickens to beekeeping supplies. There are pet products, workwear, lawn and garden equipment, and even free charging stations for electric cars. Peavey Industries president Doug Anderson is able to identify a pattern in this vast array of goods. Most can be linked to an agrarian or outdoor lifestyle, he said, and whether you’re farming a couple thousand acres or tending a small garden plot, there’s plenty to interest you. “We have our niche carved out for sure, with our product mix,” said Anderson. “It’s really lifestyle driven.” That lifestyle extends beyond horticulture to include pursuits like raising livestock, owning pets, hunting and preserving food. And it’s one that more consumers are identifying with. “What we’re seeing is a big influx of people who want to be more connected to the land or be more connected to their food and to food security,” said Anderson.
