Richmond residents awarded Paul Harris fellowships Two of the recipients helped raise money to build accessible playground

A handful of Richmond residents were awarded Paul Harris Fellowships last month to acknowledge their contributions to the community. Amanda Bostik, who raised more than $45,000 to construct an accessible playground that’s about to open near King George Park, joined past Rotary Club of Richmond president Ken Dennis, and Lois and Gilles Bouchard, founders of the SOS Children’s Village, in receiving the awards from the Rotary Club of Richmond last month. Bostik credited Dennis with supporting her efforts to build the playground.

“Ken Dennis was one of the first people who replied to have a coffee meeting to discuss the idea further and said that it was a great community project that he would be on board with, Bostik said. “It was because of Ken that the five Rotary clubs in Richmond came together to raise $5,000 and (he) helped me as co-applicants with multiple grants, two of which were awarded (totalling $30,000). Added Bostik: “It is because of people like Ken and clubs like the Rotary Club of richmond that we are able to make a difference in the community. Bostik was inspired by her daughter Gemma—who has a rare neuromuscular disorder—to urge the City of Richmond to build an accessible playground, and then organized numerous fundraising initiatives in the community. —Martin van den Hemel
