Nate Dueck, 3, was sitting on the edge of his grandpa’s pool in Abbotsford with his sisters Lucy, 5, and Faith, 8, during a family celebration last June.

The three were kicking their feet in the water of the in-ground pool, waiting for their parents to gather up a few things be-

fore they left.

Faith and Lucy liked a song they heard playing on the stereo and got up to dance. They thought Nate would follow.

But the girls turned around and were horrified to see that Nate had slipped into the pool.

Lucy raced to the edge, splayed herself across the ground and reached for Nate’s hands, which were barely poking out of the

water. Neither she nor Nate could swim.

Faith started screaming to her mother Mistry: “Mom! Mom! Mom! Mom!” Nate’s head was fully submerged, but Lucy was able to grab his fingers.

She tried to pull him up, but she was the same weight as her brother and she couldn’t do it.

She held on as tight as she could.

A change of heart about homeless Medicine Hat mayor speaks in support of housing-first approach Alex BUTLER Abbotsford News

The “mayor who ended homelessness” stopped in Abbotsford on Tuesday, telling a crowded theatre that while provincial and federal governments must provide support, he believes cities will solve the issue of homelessness.

Ted Clugston, mayor of Medicine Hat, Alta., spoke at the University of the Fraser Valley as part of an event by Poverty Free BC. Clugston told the story of how he was once a vocal opponent of the “housing-first” concept, but has since become a major supporter.

Housing first is a concept that focuses on getting homeless people under a roof as soon as possible, providing stability before addressing other potential issues such as mental health or drug use.

Clugston, who was elected as mayor in October 2013 after

someone a place to live. He said overall it costs $20,000 to $30,000 a year to house someone, due to low taxes and utilities in Medicine Hat. To have someone on the streets, with visits to shelters, hospitals, and more, it costs between $60,000 and $100,000.

The city uses one centralized intake centre and a “no questions asked, no-barrier” system. Anyone without a place to live can come in, where workers will find out why they are homeless and connect them with housing and services.

People will be housed within 10 days in a spectrum of permanent housing instead of temporary measures.

Nate had been a miracle baby. He was born Nov. 12, 2010 at 24 weeks’ gestation, weighing just 2 lbs. 2 oz., and spent five months in hospital.

Those precarious few months soon faded away and Nate grew into a happy, active toddler who enjoyed splashing in the salt-water pool in his grandpa’s back yard in the Auguston area of Abbotsford.

He hadn’t yet learned to swim, so he always wore a lifejacket.

Misty’s nieces Abby and Madison Cunningham had turned 15 and 13 on May 25 and 30 respectively, and there was a birthday celebration on June 1.

The two teens lived in the same home as their grandfather, along with their parents and two siblings.

About 60 people showed up for the occasion, and the pool was well used. Nate and Lucy wore their lifejackets for most of the day, but had removed them when it was time to leave.

Abby was outside on the second-storey deck, talking to a friend and watching the goings-on below.

Misty was standing about 15 feet from her three children when she was distracted by a ruckus involving one of her foster kids.

Meanwhile, Abby saw that Nate had fallen in the pool.

At first, he was dazed and quiet. Misty smacked him twice on the back, and Nate coughed up some water and started to cry.

Misty couldn’t help but think what could have happened if her daughters and niece hadn’t moved so quickly to save him. Words were not enough to express her gratitude.

About a month after the incident, Misty contacted the BC and Yukon branch of the Lifesaving Society, which presents the annual Honour and Rescue Awards, including the Silver Medal for Bravery.

She felt that Lucy, Abby and Faith were deserving of recognition.

“I don’t think people understand … that most kids freeze and they don’t know what to do (in a situation like this),” she said.

Misty was notified in February that the three girls had been selected to receive awards. They each received certificates, and Lucy and Abby were also given bravery medals by Lt.-Gov. Judith Guichon during a ceremony on March 28 in Vancouver.

As for Nate, he’s just looking forward to another summer of swimming in grandpa’s pool.

Almost 30 containers of suspected drug-lab materials were found Wednesday night in Abbotsford.

Local residents reported the dump on Bates Road just south of Harris Road in rural west Abbotsford at about 9 p.m.

Const. Ian MacDonald said members of the Abbotsford Police Department (APD) and Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service went to the scene and cordoned off the site.

MacDonald said there were 28 containers – eight 45-gallon drums and 20 with a volume of 4.5 or five gallons.

RCMP clandestine lab members were also notified and were at the scene on Thursday morning to determine the volatility of the chemicals and to ensure their safe removal by an environmental services company.

MacDonald said the chemicals will now be analyzed to determine exactly what they are, but they are believed to be the components of synthetic drugs, such as methamphetamine or ecstasy.

The APD continues its investigation, and does not have suspects at this time.

The Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce has announced it is strongly opposed to proposed provincial riding changes that would see Abbotsford residents in five different ridings in the next election.

Allan Asaph, executive director of the chamber, supplied a written submission to the Electoral Boundaries Commission, which released its preliminary report in March on the proposed updates to provincial boundaries.

Abbotsford police are investigating four robberies that occurred between April 18 and 29.

The robberies occurred at Abbotsford restaurants in close proximity to one another, in the 32400 to

32500 blocks of South Fraser Way, according to an Abbotsford Police Department (APD) news release.

All the restaurants are fast food operations.

As per the terms of Environmental Assessment Certificate W11-01, the City of Abbotsford is permitted to run four drinking water wells at the southwest corner of Mill Lake Park in order to meet peak demand for water during summer months.

The approved pumping capacity is 290 L/s. A total of 2,505 million litres of water may be drawn from these wells annually, between May and September until December 31, 2015.

The food services and processing businesses included are restaurants, grocery stores, amusement facilities and hotels with commercial kitchens, and food processing companies.

The APD released a surveillance image and are asking the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect.

Police are also encouraging area businesses to increase security procedures in light of these recent events.

Preparing for emergencies Abbotsford will host events to mark Emergency Preparedness Week, running May 3 to 9.

St. John Ambulance will launch a dedicated emergency preparedness blog at EmergencyReady. ca. The blog will cover everything from how to identify and reduce household hazards, to how to discuss emergency preparedness with your family. It will take the reader through the process of identifying risks, making an emergency plan and preparing an emergency kit.

Four loaded grain cars derailed in Abbotsford last week along SRY tracks along Gladys Avenue in Abbotsford.

The incident happened at 7:20 p.m. on April 24, when the cars derailed at the storage track while the crew was making a “shoving movement at a low speed,” said Singh Biln, director of communications for SRY in an email.

There were no injuries involved in the incident, and no dangerous goods were being transported, said Biln.

He said the cause of the derailment remains under investigation, but is suspected to be track related.

There is minimal damage to the cars, but about 200-feet of track is damaged.

The re-railing of the cars will require heavy equipment and will be done on May 5.

Baha’i community celebrates Ridvan

Event takes place May 2 The Baha’i community in Abbotsford holds a celebration on Saturday, May 2 of its most important festival – the 12-day festival of Ridvan – and the public is invited.

The celebration begins at 7 p.m. at Garden Park Tower, 2825 Clearbrook Rd. The theme is “Spiritual Springtime,” and the program includes music, theatrereading, a talk on the deeper implications of Baha’u’llah’s guidance for humanity, refreshments and socializing.

Ridvan is also the period when Baha’is elect their local and national governing councils, called “spiritual assemblies.”

There are no nominations and voters consider qualifications of service to the greater community in determining those they choose to elect by secret ballot.

“Ridvan” means “paradise,” and the festival celebrates humanity’s progress toward world unity.

The 12 days of Ridvan run from April 21 to May 2.

The Tenors coming to Abbotsford

The vocal quartet The Tenors has announced they will be coming to Abbotsford Centre on Oct. 2 as part of their 18-city Canadian tour.

The Under One Sky tour – named for their new album – begins Sept. 16 in Thunder Bay, Ont., and is part of a larger North American tour that will hit 70 cities.

The Tenors are a multi-platinum, Junoaward-winning group consisting of Clifton Murray, Victor Micallef, Remigio Pereira and Fraser Walters.

Under One Sky not only highlights their vocal talents, but their songwriting abilities, as the group co-wrote eight tunes on the album.

In addition to the original songs, the album includes reinventions of classics such as Lean on Me and You Are So Beautiful.

The Tenors were formed in 2007 and have performed more than 500 concerts on five continents and made over 150 TV appearances.

They have shared the stage with artists such as Andrea Bocelli, Sting, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Justin Bieber and more.

The Tenors have sold more than one million albums worldwide.

Their first album is certified double platinum and their holiday album is triple platinum in Canada.

Rotary Club supports Canuck Place

The Rotary Club of Abbotsford Sumas participated in Rotarians at Work Day on Saturday, April 25 by volunteering their time at the Canuck Place Children’s Hospice (CPCH) in Abbotsford.

Seven members of the local Rotary Club came out to help set up the Canuck Place Family Library and school room.

In addition, they presented a Rotary District 50/50 matching donation for $2,500 which, when added to the club’s original donation, brings a total of $5,000 in support for library books and school resource materials to the hospice.

“Everyone needs a quiet place to go when they are faced with challenges,” said Kelly Railton, club service projects director for the Rotary Club of Abbotsford Sumas.

Currently in phase two of a four-phase opening plan, the Abbotsford location is providing community-centred services to children with lifethreatening illnesses and their families.

These services include visits by physicians, nurses and counsellors in hospitals and homes; individual and

group grief and loss support; and recreation therapy for children and families registered in the program.

The Canuck Place Family Library is stocked with books and publications on a wealth of topics related to children living with life-threatening illnesses and their families.

The resources selected are largely based on the experiences of Canuck Place families

interacting with the Vancouver location, staff experience and the newest resources available.

Canuck Place CEO Margaret McNeil said 46 per cent of the children and families registered with Canuck Place reside in the Fraser Valley.

“Our partners in the local community, such as the Rotary Club of Abbotsford Sumas, are truly instrumental in helping us to provide the complex clinical care and programs necessary for children and families located in the area.”

Rotarians at Work Day takes place on the last Saturday in April when clubs around the world identify a hands-on project that all members can participate in to help their local community.

Canuck Place in Abbotsford is located on the Dave Lede Campus of Care on Marshall Road next to Abbotsford Regional Hospital.

Direct flights from Abby to Las Vegas WestJet will introduce a new non-stop, twiceweekly flights between Abbotsford and Las Vegas, with the service set to launch Oct. 29, 2015.

City council approved plans on Monday for the Abbotsford International Airport to eliminated several fees, including the airport improvement fee.

Coun. Sandy Blue said at the meeting that eliminating the fees will “help attract the business that we are looking for here and really help to give the economy and the aerospace industry the boost that they need.”

According to a WestJet news release from Tuesday, the fee drops create a cost-friendly environment for the airline to grow service from the Fraser Valley.

“Abbotsford and WestJet have been partners since 1997, and we see the recently announced fee drops at the airport as an opportunity to further build service in the area,” said Gregg Saretsky, WestJet president and CEO. “We are betting on the success of this route as part of our winter 2015-2016 schedule, and we are proud to offer an ultra-low fare in celebration of the announcement.”

The flights will runs on Thursdays and Sundays and introductory one-way fares will start at $111.89, according to the release.

UFV gets provincial funds for trade seats The B.C. government has provided the University of the Fraser Valley with $462,000 for 132 critical trade seats to reduce wait times for students entering an in-demand trade profession.

The UFV funding will go to create seats in welding, heavy mechanical trades, Welding Level B, electrical. UFV’s support is part of a $6.1 million initiative to fund 1,429 additional critical trade seats this year public post-secondary institutions throughout B.C. Foundation training programs provide students with the basic

knowledge and skills needed for entry into a particular occupation. Students receive credit for the first level of apprenticeship training in a specific field by the Industry Training Authority (ITA) upon successful completion.

The city’s general manager of engineering and regional utilities, Jim Gordon, is retiring this week, announced Mayor Henry Braun at Monday’s council meeting.

Gordon joined the city in 1989 as operations lead at the city works yard, said Braun. He was very involved in the merging process in 1995 when Abbotsford and Matsqui amalgamated.

In 2005, the city took over the regional utilities services, “something that is still rare for municipal governments to oversee,” said Braun, and Gordon took the lead over the transition and ensured it was smooth.

“Your leadership and expertise will be sorely missed by all at the City of Abbotsford,” said Braun.

Sr. boys rugby teams takes on Earl Marriott The Yale Lions will face Surrey’s Earl Marriott in the Fraser Valley senior boys rugby championship game.

The Lions earned a berth in the final after a hardfought 10-3 victory over Robert Bateman.

Noah Bain and Evan Johnston scored tries for Yale against Bateman.

Yale’s senior boys have also enjoyed a very successful season in sevens action. The Lions defeated Elgin Park 48-0 to win the Fraser Valley Sevens, with Daniel Cerecel earning tournament MVP honours.

That earned the team a spot in the BC High School Sevens Championships hosted at Saint George’s. In pool play, the Lions defeated Oak Bay and Argyle before facing Island power Shawnigan Lake. It is with deep, profound sadness that we announce the passing of our husband, Dad, Grandpa, and brother.

Joe is survived by his wife, Karin, daughter Donna (Bruce) Kraakman and son Ken (Linda); brothers Wim (Pacita), Hank (Pauline), Gerry (Sharon); sisters Eefie Eden and Gerda (Bob) Phillips, and sister-inlaw Shirley Appeldoorn. Surviving also are grandchildren Clarke Appeldoorn and Jacey, Jenelle, and Joel Kraakman.

Joe was predeceased by his brother, Bill, and grandson, Reid. Joe was born in the Netherlands, son of Willem and Heintje Appeldoorn. The family came to Canada - Terrace, BC - in 1948, when Joe was 12 years of age. In 1954 the family began dairy farming in Abbotsford. Joe met Karin and they married in 1960.

They moved back to Terrace where the children were born.

Joe began his career in trucking and bulldozing in Terrace, a career that spanned 35 years. In 1968 he moved his family to Mission where he carried on and became well known within the construction industry as a competent, proficient operator. Joe took great pride in his reputation and integrity involved in his business. He had an ‘old school’ work ethic. In his leisure time, Joe enjoyed fishing, family camping trips, winters in Arizona, gardening, and ‘tinkering’ in his workshop. Joe was also so very proud of his children and grandchildren and their accomplishments. In 1994 Joe and Karin retired to Armstrong where they made their home for 19 years. In 2013 Joe and Karin moved back to Abbotsford to be closer to family. In spite of Joe’s ongoing health issues, Joe’s strong will enabled him to enjoy his later years. He will be in our hearts, with love, forever. We ask in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Salvation Army. A celebration of his life was held on Monday, April 27, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at Cascade Community Church, 35190 Delair Road, Abbotsford, BC. Online condolences to the family may be made at:

Our dear mother, Mary Bergen, passed away peacefully into the presence of her Lord on April 26, 2015. She was born on June 2, 1926 in the Ukraine and came to Canada in 1947.

After surviving the war, homelessness and refugee camps, she and her husband, John, settled in Abbotsford, BC where they operated a farm for many years on Simpson Road. She was a founding member of the Eben Ezer Mennonite Church and served her church and the community for many years. She is remembered with love by her 5 children, Menno (June) Bergen, Kathy (Zeke) Doerksen and their daughter Jennifer (Joel) Stock and Gavin, age 4, Oma’s only great grandchild, Mary Bergen and her children Michael and Rosemary, Walter (Janet) Bergen and their daughters Rachel and Lara, Alvin Bergen and his children Jessica and Joel. Also remembered by her two brothers John (Lorena) Redekop, Peter (Helen) Redekop, sister-in-law Hilda Redekop and sister-inlaw Aganeta Bergen. She was predeceased by her husband John in 1993, her granddaughter Kristin Doerksen, her brother Jake Redekop and her parents Jacob and Maria Redekop. Visitation will be on Sunday, May 3 at Eben Ezer Church on Windsor Rd. from 7:30 - 8:30 pm. Graveside service will be Monday, May 4 at Maclure Road Cemetery at 11:30 am with a service of remembrance at 1:00 in the gym at Eben Ezer Church.
