PSAC DRILLING FORECAST

2015 projection cut in half BY ADVOCATE STAFF Nobody was expecting good news to come out of the Petroleum Services Association of Canada’s midyear drilling forecast update, which took place on Thursday in Calgary. But some might have been taken aback by just how bad the news was. The national trade association, which represents more than 230 service, supply and manufacturing companies in the upstream petroleum sector, has cut by nearly half its prediction of the number of wells that will be drilled in 2015. It’s now projecting 5,320 — 47 per cent fewer than the 10,100 wells it was anticipating just six months ago, and a 53 per cent drop from the 11,255 wells that were actually drilled in 2014. “Oil prices dropped from an average of US$84.40 in October 2014 to an average of US$47.83 in March 2015,” said PSAC president and CEO Mark Salkeld. “It’s no surprise that an almost 44 per cent drop in oil prices has led us to forecast a similar decline in drilling activity for the year, compared to our October 2014 forecast.” Tumbling oil prices prompted PSAC to revise its 2015 forecast in January, when it adjusted the figure downward to what then seemed like a rock-bottom 7,650 wells.

Metalhead urges youth to vote April 30 - May 3

Election too close to call

BY LANA MICHELIN ADVOCATE STAFF

Take it from a metalhead: Young Albertans need to protect their own interests by voting in Tuesday’s provincial election. Justin Shadows, the bellowing vocalist of Red Deer groove metal band Leave the Living, is tired of seeing rising tuition fees, cuts to education, and other costs borne by the young. Government leaders are sticking it to younger people because they can, said the 35-year-old fatherof-three. He noted politicians know those in their late teens and early 20s won’t get them into office because most don’t vote. The majority of seniors do — that’s why older Albertans get new perks at budget time, while young people end up paying more and more for things like university and college tuitions and now health care, he said. According to Statistics Canada, only about 30 per cent of Albertans age 18 to 24 vote, compared to nearly 70 per cent of people age 65 to 74. “I want people to make an informed choice,” and then cast a ballot, said Shadows (it is his legal last name). Listeners who can make out the lyrics on Leave the Living’s new debut full-length album, Pacifist — despite Shadows’s low-register screaming — will find some pretty political themes. The song Manifesto rails against “the one per cent,” who have a vastly disproportionate amount of wealth, compared to the rest of the population. “I really believe there’s enough resources for everybody if we just stopped letting a few people hoard it all. ... “For some reason, we continue to let them rule the world,” said Shadows.

LACOMBE-PONOKA

RED DEER

Blackfalds mayor and self-confessed political junkie Melodie Stol has run a political election pool for years. However, she’s having a tough time finding takers willing to hazard a guess on how many seats each party will win this time around. Only five have made their guesses so far compared to the usual 25 poolers. At the local Lacombe-Ponoka riding level, the winner is no easier to call. Stol admits to having “no clue at this point” which way it will go. She suspects many are in the same boat, and tonight’s election forum at the Blackfalds Multiplex at 7 p.m. could be decisive night for a lot of voters. As a municipality, Blackfalds needs a strong voice in the legislature who can line up the money for a much-needed regional sewer line and will lobby to ensure educational support doesn’t lag behind its fast-growing population, she says. Two schools are in the works, but the community is adding 70 to 100 new students during every school year and operational funding needs to keep up.

The title track skewers political complacency — people who spend their weekends drinking in front of the TV instead of seeing the big picture. “I have always voted at every level of government, municipal provincial and national,” said the vocalist, who believes it’s the only way of trying to ensure his interests are taken into account. Poison Pen blasts listeners about the importance of exercising free speech, how this right should never be taken for granted.
