Tax increase rate lowered to 4.5% from 4.89%

PUBLIC NOTICE Electors of the City of Lacombe, Province of Alberta Section 251 of the Municipal Government TAKE NOTICE that the Council of the City of Lacombe, in the Province of Alberta, has given first reading to Borrowing Bylaw 401, which will, upon final passage and approval, authorize the proper officers of the said City to borrow monies from the Alberta Municipal Finance Authority or another authorized financial institutions by way of debenture issue or bank loan, to pay for the cost of the following municipal purposes, namely, the development and construction of the City of Lacombe’s new police station.

The total cost of the aforesaid project amounts to $8,391,600 of which $2,400,000, is to be borrowed on the credit and security of the municipality at large by the issue of debentures or bank loan and on the terms and conditions outlined in Bylaw 401.

The indebtedness, either debenture or bank loan, is repayable either in monthly, semi-annual or annual payments of combined principal and interest instalments not to exceed twenty (20) years calculated at a rate not exceeding the interest rate fixed by the Alberta Capital Finance Authority or another authorized financial institution on the date of borrowing, and not to exceed eight (8) per cent.

NOW THEREFORE NOTICE is hereby given by the Council of the City of Lacombe that, unless a petition of the electors for a vote on Bylaw 401 is demanded, as provided for by the terms of section 231 of the Municipal Government Act, the said Council may pass the said borrowing bylaw.

All persons interested are hereby notified and they are required to govern themselves accordingly.

Lacombe City council has adopted the adjustments made to the 2015 operating budget with an amended surplus of $8,400 and a final tax increase rate of 4.5%.

According to the 2015 operating budget update published in the April 27th City council agenda report, changes in the budget can be attributed to three major categories which include provincial grants, solid waste requisition and property assessments.

Strong residential growth in 2014 resulted in additional taxable revenue for 2015 of $78,822. As well, the City generated an additional $50,206 in supplementary tax revenue.

“What happens is when we set our budgets and go through what our costs for the year are, it’s far in advance of the provincial budget and prior to assessments being done. Once assessments are done and we see the provincial budget, we come back and do our adjustments and set the tax rate where it should be,” said Steve Christie, Lacombe mayor.

“Now, there were quite a few factors this year. Our assessment went up with regards to residential. Our commercial assessment was right around where we thought it would be. Our assessment went

up, but we had some negatives happen that kind of took away some of our surplus. We still ended up with a little bit of a surplus and were therefore able to decrease our tax increase from 4.89 (per cent) to 4.5 (per cent).”

Revenue loss for the City came from the elimination of the funding provided in lieu

by Alberta Housing for housing management bodies including seniors’ living facilities and social housing for families. The loss of this funding means a loss of $68,750 as well as an additional $4,580 in school requisition funding.

In the City’s proposed 2015 budget, an estimate for the requisition to the Lacombe Regional Solid Waste Commission was included. After the provincial budget, the final amount to commission is $41,412 higher than previously thought, and that money will be found in the solid waste reserves.

“During this process, we’re always looking for efficiencies and better ways and more efficient ways of doing things.

Through this, with our financial department and billing department, there are some possible savings. There might be a more efficient way to work with our billing process, so we’re researching that. There are some capitol costs, so we’re going to weigh that out and see if it balances out into savings or not,” said Christie.

A Better World Canada celebrates 25 years in community Effects of the organization’s humanitarian efforts felt across the world

F

rom humble beginnings to becoming a worldwide volunteer-driven organization, A Better World Canada (ABW), a Lacombe-based charity, has had a ripple effect across the globe.

ABW celebrated their milestone, marking 25 years of humanitarian efforts, this past weekend in Lacombe.

Last Saturday, a humanitarian day was held at both Burman University and the Lacombe Memorial Centre (LMC). The morning started out with a church service celebrating change and featured speakers including Janet Auma, Bernard Opiyo and Charles Muraguri, three of the ABW visitors from Kenya.

The afternoon was an opportunity to recognize the countless volunteers who have helped shape the organization throughout the 25 years of existence.

Later in the day, ABW celebrated the launch of a book, in honour of the milestone. Titled Journey of Hope: Celebrating 25 years of A Better World Canada, the book written by journalist Cameron Kennedy is a reflection of ABW and his journey with the agency.

Many may have heard how ABW came to be, but Co-Founder Eric Rajah provided an account of how the organization has evolved since its beginning in 1990.

Along with Brian Leavitt, Rajah was looking for a way to affect change in the world over 25 years ago.

“We decided we needed to get students at Canadian University College involved and chose to involve them in humanitarian causes,” he said.

Starting with an annual budget of $5,000, the agency has expanded to a budget of around $2 million. The ABW operates by the assistance of countless volunteers, all under the direction of Rajah and two part-time staff members.

With a focus on sustainability and improving lives, the organization partners with communities in other countries to assist in education, health care, water and

infrastructure. Each year doctors, dentists, physiotherapists, teachers, trades people and endless volunteers travel from Canada to various communities to provide services and to work with locals to become self-sustainable.

One of the very first countries the organization assisted was Kenya. Over the past 25 years, ABW has undertaken around 60 projects in over 25 countries, including Afghanistan, Bolivia, Somalia, Belize and Thailand.

“We continue to do a lot in Kenya,” said Rajah. “But our concentration right now is in about 12 countries.”

Rajah said he sees the organization continuing to expand in three areas, in particular longterm development in the project countries.

“We are more and more focusing on a community and trying to do more projects that are about community development,” he added. “We are staying in communities for longer periods of time.”

The second area he sees a focus on is youth engagement.

“We would like to develop the young people, the youth, the students and the younger people,” said Rajah. “Basically, training the next generation to be compassionate and give back.”

With this initative to ensure the future of ABW, the youth division of the organization ‘Tomorrow’s EDGE’ was created in 2009.

Twelve scholarships were given out this year to students through the program.

The third area ABW would like to focus on is continuing to work on local projects within the Lacombe and Central Alberta region.

“We would like to look at local projects as well and the needs here,” said Rajah. “We do one project each year, but we would like to do a few more.”

Through the Neighbours program, which was started in 2011, ABW chooses one local project within the community, which usually entails making renovations to a home in Central Alberta to meet the needs of a family or individual.

A project was also undertaken in Bentley to help a man in a wheelchair have access to his home and to be able to have home dialysis.

“We always look for people in our area who have fallen between the cracks,” he said.

Rajah said even due to its staggering growth and expansion, ABW still plans to remain based in Lacombe.

“There are many generous people here,” he said. “It’s a nice small group of people, where we know each other, they can travel, they can see the project.

“I think that’s the key to our

success — we are small enough to engage people who want to be involved and we have room for people to participate.”

Looking around at the many smiling faces last Saturday at the LMC, many of who have volunteered for countless years, participated in a trip or have seen the direct benefits from ABW, you can see the future for the organization is bright.

There is unlimited room for growth, expansion and a chance for many more generations to come to learn about humanitarian causes and to show compassion for others, whether it is here in the local community or be-

yond, Rajah said.

For Rajah, this is exactly what he saw in the room and what he sees in Lacombe.

“All of this compassion happening is because of the generosity of people,” he said.

“You need to have compassion.

You need to believe that you can make a difference and then you need to turn that belief into action. And Lacombe people have certainly done that. They are compassionate, they believe we have a role in the world and they have been willing to turn it into action. That’s the story of A Better World.”

Lacombe-Ponoka constituency candidates face off

BY SARAH MAETCHE Lacombe Express The Lacombe Memorial Centre was a full house as four local candidates for the Lacombe-Ponoka constituency took to the stage during an all-candidates forum on April 27th.

A wide range of topics from healthcare and education, oil revenue to minimum wage were on the forefront of discussion for the four candidates: Peter DeWit of the PC Party, Doug Hart of the Alberta NDP, Tony Jeglum of the Alberta Party and Ron Orr of the Wildrose Party.

In his opening remarks, Jeglum stated the overarching issue of this election remains the same as it did three years ago.

“Each election campaign is very much about money,” he said. “We need stable funding for our schools and hospitals. We cannot allow the price of a barrel of oil to predict our children’s education. That makes absolutely no sense.”

He said the Alberta Party envisions an education system that is admirably

funded, “Where local voters are responsible for decisions when it comes to their schools. Teachers are entrusted to teach to students’ needs, not standardized exams.

“We believe our healthcare needs a better strategy,” he said. “We must invest in long-term care, family doctors, mental health and addictions treatments.”

He concluded a balanced approach on both sides, raising revenue and increasing corporate tax, is needed.

Orr began his address by ensuring voters that, “Their vote would not walk away from them this time.

“A vote for any other party is a vote for higher taxes,” he reaffirmed.

Orr said the province does not have a revenue problem, but an apparent spending problem. “The PC government collects more money and spends more money per capita than any other province in Canada,” he said. “Wildrose is the only party that actually has a detailed fiscal plan that will balance the bud-

ing for schools and would deliver on the proposed school for Blackfalds.

Hart started off his address by stating that the last five premiers in Alberta have mismanaged the province and the wealth of resources.

“Albertans have enjoyed some prosperity over the last few years, but it’s been not thanks to the Conservatives, but in spite of them,” said Hart. “In their platform, the PCs want to impose 59 new taxes, health levies and fees. They also want to cut school budgets, refuse to let school boards use their reserves and they want to cut health care budgets.”

He added the NDP would propose a revenue increase through a 2% increase in corporate tax and would also propose a progressive tax.

“We would also propose to increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2018,” he said.

For his opening statement, DeWit said Alberta is at a turning point.

“We have been using energy dollars to pay for our day-to-day expenses,” he said. “This approach is unpredictable and frankly, unsustainable. We need to take immediate action to put Alberta back on track.”

DeWit said the government needs to be better in order to secure a future for Albertans. Through five main action points, the PCs plan to bring Alberta, “Back on track,” with the

first being by reducing government waste.

The second action point he noted was investing in infrastructure.

“We need to invest in schools, hospitals and roads,” he said. “Now is not the time to fall short on these important and muchneeded projects.”

The remaining points he indicated were protecting jobs, diversifying the economy and doubling the savings in the Heritage Fund by 2025. “We have a plan to successfully deal with these challenges,” said DeWit. In response to a question regarding what their particular party plans to do to keep rural Alberta vibrant, DeWit stated the topic is near and dear to his heart and he would bring the issues from rural Alberta forward to the Legislature.

“The PC party is committed to rural Alberta in several ways,” he said. “It is committed to diversifying the local economy, to making sure there are local jobs and we are very proud of the industry and agriculture that is in this area.”

Hart responded by stating that the NDP is all about sustaining rural communities.

“Sixty per cent of the GDP originates in rural Alberta — the beef, the oil, the gas, the dairy, the wheat — and it turns into jobs in Edmonton and Calgary for our young people from rural Alberta,” he said.

He added urban drift is a huge problem in the area,

in particular in Ponoka which has a higher than usual senior citizen population.

“I think we can do lots to diversify the economy, to create jobs for young people to stay in small town Alberta, but we also have to have a politician that will go to Edmonton to say this urban drift is taking the money from rural Alberta,” said Hart.

In response to a question regarding supporting public funds being used towards private education and healthcare, Jeglum stated the Alberta Party does support private schools as long as they are inclusive.

“We do not support public funds going into the private healthcare system,” he stated.

Orr responded to the same question, indicating Wildrose is in support of choice in regards to education.

“Yes we support public funds being used in private education,” he said. “But we also support public education.

“We believe it is entirely possible that in terms of healthcare, public dollars can be administered and healthcare can be delivered by means of private operators.”

He added that currently Albertans fly out of province to receive healthcare treatments.

City moves forward with Municipal Development Plan Lacombe’s first roundabout has been included in proposed document

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Lacombe Express ‘The Municipal Development Plan: Growing Lacombe’ is a set of guidelines and goals that help the City to determine direction and set goals for growth with a focus on efficiency and quality of life for citizens.

The document was recently reviewed by City council, with a heavy focus on a new infrastructure development of a roundabout intersection on 58th St. “There are a few big projects in the capital works program this year. We’re well

versed in doing sewer replacements, water replacements and overlays, so I don’t see them as major stumbling blocks. There are a number of programs listed that are to be included - some are underground development, some paving, some roadwork and probably some trail sections as well,” said Infrastructure Services Director Matthew Goudy. “I think the most interest that we’ve heard in the community is around the roundabout. It’s also the project that is most over budget in the tender. While that was certainly a surprise to us, if we look at which projects have the highest expectation of variability in pricing – it would be

Through the trial period, the City has been receiving feedback they will use to measure the success of the program and to adjust the service. “We’re at about a 16.5 per cent diversion rate, but I think that’s going to pick up when we have the program in place longer. We’re seeing a diversion that is quite a bit lower than the provincial average, but it’s very, very different to compare them apples-to-apples in community to community,” said Matthew Goudy, infrastructure services director with the City.

The City has completed one year out of five with their contractor. It will continue to seek to reduce landfill waste by promoting greater usage of the blue

box system.

“People are getting more used to it, we have seen better usage. One thing is that there are a lot of households that are using it on a bi-weekly basis, rather than a weekly basis, and then there are some that are overflowing every week and have multiple bins,” Goudy said.

He said although things like vacations and weather impact pick-up rates, about 75% of Lacombe families are using the blue boxes on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Available on the City of Lacombe web site is information on which items are acceptable to place in the blue box, and which items are not.

All blue boxes must be set out before 7 a.m. on collection day. Extra blue boxes are available for purchase at City Hall, and overflow items may be placed beside the box in a clear plastic bag for collection. kmendonsa@lacombeexpress.com

The City is still confident in the benefits of pursuing the roundabout intersection because it will provide a safe, efficient intersection in a low-traffic area and will give citizens a chance to get used to the concept.

Goudy said the City of Lacombe is working closely with the City of Red Deer, the Town of Blackfalds and Alberta Transportation on educational material that will be sent out around the province. He also said according the Alberta Transportation, new intersections would all be reviewed as a roundabout prior to using signalization

as the structures become more popular in the province.

“We still do think this is a project to go ahead with because the traffic at this intersection is low. It’s not getting put into a really congested intersection and it gives residents a chance to learn about this farsuperior intersection treatment. It’s very safe, and without much risk and will be easy to educate drivers,” Goudy said.

County adjusts road construction schedule for transmission line

BY SARAH MAETCHE Lacombe Express County councillors have adjusted the five-year road construction schedule to accommodate an incoming transmission line. Lacombe County Manager of Operations Phil Lodermeier told council the five-year construction schedule has been approved, but AltaLink has proposed to install a transmission line along RR 26-1, south of Hwy. 12 in 2016.

Lodermeier suggested if the County moved up the reconstruction of RR 26-1 to this year, making it a priority, the County could benefit in cost savings and avoid the conflict with the AltaLink transmission line.

“It is important to not have to work around the AltaLink structures and

or pay to have the poles moved, so it is our recommendation to move the RR 26-1 project to the first priority for 2016,” he said.

With an adjustment to the schedule, projects slated for 2016 including RR 2-0 (north and south of Centreview Road) 3.5 miles, Ray Walker Road (Twp. Rd 41-0) 1.5 miles, RR 3-1 (north of Hwy. 11) two miles and RR 3-2 (Safronovich Road) six miles, are likely to be pushed back a year.

Councillor Dana Kreil said two roads in her division, RR 3-1 and RR 3-2, are in bad shape and residents have been waiting for years for the roads to be repaired.

Kreil put forth a motion for the County to look into using resources to complete the reconstruction of RR

26-1, as to allow the project to still be completed but to not alter the fiveyear construction schedule.

Lodermeier said depending on the weather this season, all of the scheduled projects may still be completed.

Councillor Keith Stephenson said the motion was a, “Very big step,” and should be discussed within the County’s strategic plan or at a committee of the whole meeting.

Due to the nature of the motion, council decided to table the discussion regarding the use of a private contractor to complete construction projects until another date.

Last days of election campaign nearing As the final days of the provincial election quickly unfold, party leaders and other candidates were busy attempting to earn votes.

Post-secondary education, reversing government cuts and alleged plays for power were all topics up for debate throughout the week.

Alberta NDP Leader Rachel Notley announced that the NDP would reverse the PC decision to make cuts to apprenticeship training.

“It’s time for a government that supports apprentices and creates good jobs,” said Notley. “But Jim Prentice is making a reckless cut to apprenticeships that puts jobs in jeopardy. The PCs’ decision to cut training opportunities is the wrong decision at the wrong time. By restoring funding for apprenticeship training, the NDP will support the skilled workers we need to fuel our province’s economic prosperity.”

She noted this year’s provincial budget cuts apprenticeship delivery funding by $6.2 million this year, to $41.5 million in overall funding.

“Our province can’t afford to lose apprenticeship opportunities that will only make our skills shortages even worse and put our economic prosperity at risk.”

Notley added the NDP plan to create jobs is by rewarding businesses that hire new employees with a Job Creation Tax Credit and by promoting upgrading and refining jobs at home.

Wildrose Leader Brian Jean also reiterated on Tuesday that voting in a Wildrose

government is the way to stop the NDP and the PC plans for higher taxes.

“After asking for the trust of Albertans, the PC party has collapsed under the weight of crushing debt, dozens of tax hikes and what will be a decade of deficits,” said Jean. “Their slow decline appears almost complete. I’ve been to every corner of this province, and there’s one thing I’ve learned from this campaign: Albertans are looking for change.”

Jean stated Wildrose’s plan is to not raise taxes, to promote jobs and investment in Alberta and to shrink the size of government. This will include a commitment to bring in operational savings of $1.1 billion, $1.6 billion, and $2.2 billion over the next three years.

Alberta Party Leader Greg Clark announced that post-secondary education access needs to be improved and provided with stable funding.

“Alberta’s universities, colleges and technical institutes are the launch pad for future economic prosperity in this province,” he said. “The Alberta Party recognizes the significant social returns from investment in education. It is the key to personal opportunity, growth and enrichment and is essential to maintaining our future prosperity.”

Clark added rising tuition fees, student debt and a lack of spaces post-secondary institutions have pushed post-secondary education out of reach for many Albertans.

country,” he said. “Cost is the primary barrier to all forms of post-secondary education, both academic and trades training. The Alberta Party seeks to eliminate financial barriers that prevent access to otherwise qualified candidates.”

The PCs made announcement that the NDP platform would increase the province’s dependency on oil and gas revenue, which would cost taxpayers $22 billion over the next five years.

“The cost of expensive NDP promises just keeps adding up for Albertans and is unrealistic in this economic environment,” said Minister of Healthcare Stephen Mandel. “They have failed to include the real cost of growth pressures to health care, which alone amounts to $6.6 billion in miscalculated costs. Under these circumstances, the only way to balance the provincial budget would be to break promises

to Albertans.

“It’s clear that the NDP has no plan to get Alberta off the boom and bust cycle, and in fact, would make us more dependent on oil and gas revenue to pay for government spending,” said Mandel.

A candidates’ forum will be held on May 1st from 7 to 9 p.m. in the banquet room, on the second floor of the multiplex in Blackfalds. Hosted by the Blackfalds Chamber of Commerce, residents are invited to get to know the four local candidates and have questions answered. Admission is free and all are welcome.

The provincial election is set for May 5th. Polling stations across the LacombePonoka constituency will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. the day of the election.

OPINION Lacombe Express marks two years Last week, the Lacombe Express marked two years in existence as a community newspaper.

In newspaper time, that’s 104 editions of the paper and around 364,000 printed copies distributed throughout the community.

In the two years we’ve been in existence, we’ve had the pleasure of covering many stories within Lacombe, Blackfalds and the surrounding area.

In our very first edition, we featured a variety of communitybased stories such as a feature on a former child soldier, the still evolving C4 Initiative, the performance-based acrobatic group, the Acronaires and a colourful photo spread on the Lacombe Fashion Show. On the inaugural front page was a photo of our fearless volunteer firefighters fighting a grass fire along the railway tracks.

In our first anniversary edition, we again featured a variety of stories including a showcase on two Lacombe men who went to the Ukraine to provide medical assistance to those in need, a story on an award-winning kickboxing

instructor as well as a story that delved into Blackfalds residents’ concerns on a new waste bylaw proposed by the Town. On the front page was a photo of a Canada goose, welcoming in the spring season.

Throughout the last two years, the Express has also covered many projects that have started out in infancy, sometimes just as a design concept, and are now full-fledged facilities, like the Town of Blackfalds’ premier recreation facility, the Abbey Centre. We covered the story from the first steps of construction, to the grand opening and now continue to cover all of the events and happenings that go on inside the public facility.

Last week, in our 52nd print edition, we featured stories on seniors’ fitness, the newly planned police facility in Lacombe, provincial education cuts, a photo spread on the Encore Art Sale and Celebration and of course, the upcoming provincial election.

Even though it’s two years later and our staff has seen some changes, both editions reflect the same

clear stream of consciousness — we are connected to the area and continue to offer the community the latest in local news.

And this is where you come in readers.

We are always looking for new ways to improve and expand our paper, so we continue to encourage readers to submit letters, story

ideas and photos to us.

We’ve enjoyed being part of the community, covering the issues you care about and are interested in. We would like to thank the community, all of the readers and advertisers for making this second year also a successful one.

We hope to mark many more to come.

According to Statistics Canada, Alberta ranked seventh overall in life satisfaction with Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan ranking No. 1 and No. 2.

Edmonton is ranked 30th and Calgary 23rd among 33 Canadian cities, in terms of life satisfaction in the most recent survey measuring Canadian happiness.

Hard to believe, isn’t it? After all, at $84,390, Alberta has the highest per capita income in the nation.

Now look at these figures: • One in five working Albertans (20%) earns less than a living wage ($15/hour); • The average Alberta household debt is $124,838, adding strain to family life and unnecessary stresses on the healthcare system; • 21.1% of Albertans experience of lot of stress in their lives (Alberta ranked 10th among the provinces and territories), with Newfoundland being the least stressed province (15.2%.) Only 63.6% of Albertans felt a strong sense of belonging to their community. That placed us 12th, just ahead of lowest-ranked Quebec. Nunavut has the highest sense of belonging.

The Genuine Wealth Institute has estimated that the province’s Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI), a broad measure of societal wellbeing (what I like to call the Happiness Index), declined 0.5% per year between 1961 and 2003. Meanwhile, real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita increased steadily by about 2.2% per year. I guess it’s true that money can’t buy happiness.

Today, in the midst of another provincial election, maybe it is time to move on to a new aspirational vision for Alberta. It would be based on individual and collective ‘happiness,’ using our abundant natural assets (oil, gas, agricultural land, forests and clean water), our human capital, our social capital (relationships, trust) and our entrepreneurial spirit to build a better, more just economy.

But using a well-being-based investment approach to governing

the province would require establishing a new strategic vision for the future.

Maybe the past can offer us some guidance.

When Peter Lougheed was elected premier in 1971, he led his team with a new vision for Alberta that included championing the oil and gas industry and developing the oil sands. But his vision also included collecting a fair share of royalties based on the value of oil and gas sales and putting aside 30% or more of this money in Alberta’s Heritage Savings and Trust Fund.

He did this to ensure Albertans received an appropriate return-onequity for our natural resources.

During the Lougheed years, royalties on oil and gas averaged 27% of their value. Unfortunately, beginning in 1985 the rate of return to Albertans from oil and gas sales has been steadily falling, reaching its lowest level during Alison Redford’s tenure.

The Alberta government (as do all governments in Canada) currently operates without a balance sheet, so my first recommendation would be that we conduct a review of the real total wealth held by the province.

That review will give us the tools

to properly manage our natural capital and optimize our human and social capital assets as well.

It could be a game-changer for the province.

Alberta could become a model economy of well-being following the lead of China and Bhutan which have both adopted a new economic paradigm based on wellbeing and happiness.

The Chinese model is based on the ancient Confucian idea of ‘xiaokang,’ which means ‘a society of well-being’ where economic growth is balanced with sometimes-conflicting goals of social equality and environmental protection.

Given the present unhappy state of our province’s well-being, I encourage all Albertans to ask their candidates during the provincial election if they would support an economy of well-being that would create a much better future for our children and grandchildren.

We need to pray for Habitat for Humanity looks to move into Lacombe each other in unity I am so thankful to have been a member of the Lacombe and Area Ministerial for about 25 years.

We have a good group of caring leaders that share together and focus on our unity in the message of Jesus’ love to all.

I believe and share there is hope and a bright future when people can pray together.

It is time for those who share a Christian faith to have a united front! It is time to pray together! ISIS doesn’t ask what flavour of Christian they might be as they mock, torture and kill them. Jesus must have anticipated the darkest side of human nature and in his prayer for us he asked in John 17:20, “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.

“May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.”

And then he said it again, “I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one - I in them and you in me so that they may be brought to complete unity.

I encourage sincere people to not even waste their time listening to self-righteous, religious, exclusive, ‘my way or the highway’ people who focus on slamming other Christian leaders.

Just because people can invest millions of donor’s dollars to get on the TV or radio to convince us they exclusively have the answers doesn’t make them right!

Let’s all pray for leaders and many more who will risk stepping forward, asking for prayer, caring for and helping others hurting to come to unity.

There is hope and a bright future as we pray and work together.

On average, it has taken the organization around four years to complete a home.

Blake said he would like to see the building cycle accelerated to allow more families to have access to the affordable housing ownership program.

“It really is a hand up, not a hand out,” he said of the program.

Families are encouraged to invest in home ownership.

To move into a Habitat for Humanity home, a down payment is not required and as homeowners pay mortgage payments, the payments go towards building more homes in the community.

On average, each family stays in a Habitat for Humanity built home for five to seven years. Once the family moves out, a new low-income family would move in.

Each Habitat for Humanity home remains in the cycle, always acting as a home for a family in need within the community.

Habitat for Humanity, an organization that works towards creating sustainable affordable housing is looking to expand their project base and head into the Lacombe area.

Executive Director Brian Blake said the not-for-profit organization would like to expand their target for building homes in the region from one-a-year to about 10 homes per year.

He appeared before Lacombe County council on April 23rd to explain what the organization plans to do and their request for funding partners in order to move into the region.

“We have built around 628 total homes in Alberta,” explained Blake of the overall organization.

“Well over 160 families qualified for homes in the Red Deer region.”

Since 1994, Habitat for Humanity Red Deer has built around 23 homes in the area.

of provincial funding for this year, the organization will be short funds and will be looking for stakeholder partners to get several projects off the ground.

Habitat For Humanity Red Deer has also approached the City of Lacombe, indicating a desire to begin a project within the City as early as this summer.

Blake noted Habitat for Humanity has requested for the City to fund six lots in order to create three duplexes in the McKenzie Ranch subdivision.

Lacombe County councillors accepted the presentation as information and will make a decision regarding funding at a later council date.

The concept of Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1976 in Americus, Georgia by a man named Millard Fuller.

PCN to progress with funds from Recreation and Culture grant

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Lacombe Express Two Primary Care Network (PCN) programs have received funding through the City’s Recreation and Culture Grant that will help the community in efforts to get active.

One of the programs, Prescription to Get Active, is a currently existing program while the other, Aging Well, will be completely new to the community. Through the grant, $1,251.38 was designated to Prescription to Get Active, and $2,721.24 was allotted to Aging Well.

Heather Mielke, an exercise specialist with the Wolf Creek Primary Care Network, submitted an application to the grant funding program in hopes of fulfilling some needs she has seen become identified in the community.

“There’s a large population of seniors living in lots of communities, but for sure in Lacombe, that are managing to teeter just on the brink of living independently.

If they have a fall or injury in their home, they are no longer able to live independently in their homes. I really want to address the need to stay functioning for those people with an exercise class,” Mielke said.

“There are a lot of excellent options for seniors and they are often the ones who have time to do these types of things. That said, you can’t keep that population as safe in large classes doing movements, so a lot of those activities are sitting. But, it’s not functional and that’s what I’m really hoping to address with Aging Well.”

According to Mielke, there are fitness programs for seniors in the area, but most address an age group of between 55-75. She said she is hoping for people who are older than that, or who are living independently and are at risk of losing that independence pending a fall or other type of in-home injury.

“With Aging Well, I really want to make it a functional program, meaning I want it to translate well into their home life. That means that they can do things like rise

from sitting easily, climb stairs safely and just perform daily activities that they need to do at home.

“It’s kind of been in the back of my mind for a while, and I thought the grant opportunity gave me the chance to address some of the big barriers that were facing getting this program going.”

The funding from the Recreation and Culture grant will go towards transportation to and from the exercise class, helping to secure an activity space and the purchase of exercise equipment that is designed for use with elderly populations.

Prescription to Get Active is a pre-existing program that gained popularity in 2014 when the Alberta Minister of Health put a call out to Canadians for input on how to promote healthy living. It was recognized as the sixth most popular program in the nation.

It is currently offered across the province as a partnership between local Primary Care Networks and fitness centres and exercise facilities. Through PCN doctors, patients will be able to get a ‘prescription for activity’, as well as some sort of incentive – usually facility passes – to be able to address those activity needs.

“Normally how Prescription to Get Active programs work is the facilities that are partnered with the PCN provide some sort of incentive or offer – often times a month pass to the facility. When I approached the City they were very interested, but with budgeting and time frame it made it difficult, but they suggested I apply for funding to purchase passes up front.”

She said after speaking with a PCN representative, she was given the go-ahead to carry the project forward as it worked for Lacombe.

“I can see this being an ongoing partnership with the City and the PCN after this year. Now that they’re aware of it, they can plan ahead and budget for it,” she added.

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Lacombe Express Lacombe parents are going to be able to save some money on baby and kids’ items at the Lacombe ParentLink Mom to Mom sale and fundraiser event.

The event will take place in the Servus Room at the Lacombe Memorial Centre on May 9th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Vendors will be selling new and lightly used toys, books, nursing items and other various parenting items.

“The Mom-to-Mom sale is basically a sale where people can get together and sell items that are for young families, for

children zero to 5. We are going to be in the Servus room at the Lacombe Memorial Centre and the idea is that there will be 14 tables of different items in one room that are all for young families,” said Cora Hoekstra, program coordinator for the Lacombe ParentLink Centre.

“That also includes things for nursing parents and people that are anticipating having a child. You’ll find strollers, clothing, books and toys – anything that they might need to help them in raising their children.”

The sale will also have baby equipment such as strollers and carriers, maternity and nursing wear, as well as a variety of home-business vendors and their wares.

RCMP seek assistance in Clive hit and run On April 7th at 11:15 a.m., a pedestrian was stuck by a vehicle while crossing the street on Railway Avenue in Clive. The pedestrian went over the hood and landed on the ground after being struck. The vehicle did not stop and promptly

left the scene driving east into town. The pedestrian sustained minor injuries as a result of the collision but did not require medical attention.

The vehicle has been described as a black sports car, newer looking in very

good condition.

RCMP are seeking the public’s assistance regarding this incident. Any information can be referred to the Blackfalds RCMP at 403-885-3300 or Crimestoppers 1-800-222-8477.

All of the money raised from the event will go towards enhancing current ParentLink programs, such as playgroups, nutrition information courses and education and information programs for new parents.

Every program at ParentLink is free, so fundraisers like the Mom-to-Mom sale are essential to delivering high quality programs for families with young children.

“Lacombe ParentLink Centre is a community program to support young chil-

dren. We do receive some funding, but as with all things, we grow faster than our funding does. We have received some increases in funding, but FCSS groups across the province haven’t seen an increase in funding in a long time,” Hoekstra said.

TRAVEL Oceania Cruises – seeing your world, your way

AT SEA – Passengers can enjoy an array of fabulous experiences and entertainment while onboard an Oceania Cruise ship.

Oceania Cruise Line offers a spectacular array of destinations on their elegant midsized ships, the Regatta, Insignia, Nautica, Marina and Riviera. A sixth ship, the Sirena will be added to their fleet in the spring of 2016. The Regatta, Insignia and Nautica have a guest capacity of 684 while the larger Marina and Riviera accommodate 1,250 passengers. The larger ships have more amenities on board as well as more specialty dining options.

Oceania cruises are almost all inclusive. You can actually dis-embark with little or no account to settle as most of their itineraries have pre-paid gratuities, internet included, specialty dining included and your stateroom fridge is restocked daily with bottled water and soft drinks.

Specialty coffees are available all day. We were also able to purchase wine on shore which could be enjoyed throughout the ship. Elegant but casual afternoon tea is served daily with an array of sandwiches to sweets featuring awesome scones and clotted cream – not good for the diet but oh so delicious!

Entertainment on smaller ships is not

the big Broadway shows as you would see on the bigger ships but there is a low key show every night. Our cruise featured a comedian show several nights and a musical group that performed an array of concerts from Broadway to modern.

Each ship has a smaller gym that is well equipped with modern exercise equipment where you can work off some of those extra calories. Then you can enjoy a relaxing service at the elegant Canyon Ranch Spa. As Oceania has mid-sized ships they can dock in the most desirable ports where larger ships cannot go. The itineraries are port intensive, many with overnight stays or later evening departures to allow for extra time to explore.

We did a seven night Caribbean Delight cruise on the Insignia, sailing from San Juan, Puerto Rico and visiting smaller islands to the south. Our first stop was St. Barts, a small island surrounded by crystal waters. As you stroll the shoreline, you will see many beautiful yachts docked in harbour.

St. John’s is the capital city of Antigua

where we docked the next day. It was a large producer of sugar cane but now you only see the remains of the crumbling sugar mills. The island was an important Royal Navy Base that remains a fascinating attraction for tourists.

Castries, St. Lucia our next stop is a small island where you can see lush rainforests, striking waterfalls, beautiful beaches and the Sulphur Springs - the worlds only drive-through volcano. You can also walk closer and see the bubbling, steamy pools of water.

Bridgetown Barbados is another island with stunning natural beauty. We saw Barbados’ best features on the Harrison Cave Tour. From the ship we drove through lush hills to the Cave with its stalactites and stalagmites, underground streams and waterfalls. You can include a visit to World of Orchids.

Our last stop before returning to San Juan was Grenada, the Spice Island. Our excursion took us through scenic rain forests, historic forts and the Spice Farm where a knowledgeable guide toured us through an array of spice plants, explain-

The sea day as we cruised back to San Juan gave an opportunity to enjoy the amenities on the ship, enjoying a spa treatment, working off calories in the gym, trying your luck in the casino, or simply relaxing on the sundeck.

Burnt Thicket Theatre presents premiere of We Are the Body

BY MARK WEBER Lacombe Express Local playwright Andrew Kooman’s highly-anticipated play, We Are the Body, will be making its world premiere in Red Deer on May 5th.

Performances continue through to May 9th at the Scott Block Theatre, with several more planned for Calgary and Saskatoon.

Performances are 7:30 p.m. nightly with 2 p.m. matinees.

Tickets are on sale for $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Tickets are also available online at www.burntthicket.com.

We Are the Body explores the lives of three prisoners of conscience in communist Europe in the 1950s. Kooman, who also wrote the acclaimed play She Has A Name, said he was inspired by two incredibly powerful stories as the idea for the play surfaced – Brother Andrew’s harrowing recollections of delivering Bibles into communist countries in the height of the Cold War and Richard Wurmbrand’s experiences of being imprisoned for his Christian faith, as recounted in his book Tortured for Christ and other writings.

In We Are the Body, the story focuses on three prisoners - each in solitary confinement - behind the Iron Curtain of postwar Romania. Elsie’s (Heather Pattengale) only companions are two other tortured prisoners Richard (Tim Bratton) and Micah (John McIver) who she cannot speak to or see in person.

In bringing the production to the stage, Kooman has teamed up with Calgary’s Burnt Thicket Theatre and Stephen Waldschmidt, who also directed the mesmerizing She Has A Name. “I stumbled on Brother Andrew’s writings again – We Are the Body is influenced by the work of Brother Andrew who risked his life to smuggle contraband Bibles to people behind the Iron Curtain.

“As I was reading about his completely fascinating story, which has inspired generations, I also came across sermons by Richard Wurmbrand which he constructed, tapping them out in Morse Code and memorizing them in his solitary confinement while he was behind the Iron Curtain as well. He had a brutal 13-year imprisonment, and for some of it he was tortured almost everyday.

“Though they had experienced different risks in this volatile political climate in eastern Europe after World War II, they both shared these same convictions and

So I imagined a story of someone who has no access to the literature that they want, feels that they need yet it’s illegal to have it.”

As said, the story focuses on Elsie who is on the receiving end of the contraband literature and ends up in jail. “It asks that question to what extent can people hold onto what they believe, and why do they hold onto it? So there’s a universal theme here of what do we believe and why do we believe it, and how strongly will we stand behind what we believe especially when the powers that be try to knock us off our feet?”

Elsie, Richard and Micah secretly tap out messages to each other in Morse code. These sounds trigger memories so the past and present collide in heartwrenching and occasionally humorous ways.

As the synopsis point out, the communication between Elsie, Richard and Micah become a survival strategy as they cling to the hope of escape or release. “It’s a survival mechanism for them, but then the sounds trigger memories that bring them

into their pasts, which gives the back story of how they got there.”

For Elsie, Richard and Micah, the choice presented to them by their captors is to turn in their friends, give up names and betray people they love in order to end their suffering. But in order to enjoy freedom they must imagine a life without their faith.

“I’m fascinated by that time and I think that what’s interesting is how I realized how universal the story is,” said Kooman.

“I also see how there is so much religious persecution around the world – I’m seeing it everyday in the news. So it’s actually a really relevant story.

“What is the nature of suffering when people believe in something, and hold onto that belief ?”

As for teaming up with Waldschmidt again, Kooman couldn’t be more pleased.

“He’s such a creative visionary,” he said.

“The creative team he’s helped to bring together, and his vision, are really exciting. I really trust him with the work that I write, and that gives me such confidence to hand it over to someone like him because he re-

ally understands my sensibility. He can bring to life the things that I put down on the page in a way that, I think, has really enlivened my vision.”

Waldschmidt calls the story one of, “High stakes as the characters come to terms with their confinement and wrestle with how they became imprisoned in the first place: for defying a brutal government regime.

“I believe the play will resonate deeply with audiences, especially given the daily headlines about people globally who are facing extreme brutality because they belong to a specific faith or adhere to a marginalized worldview.”

Meanwhile, plans for a feature film interpretation of She Has a Name are in the works. Kooman is holding meetings with producers and consultants from the UK and Los Angeles. “It’s picking up heat and momentum. We still have some money to raise, but our aim is to film in September overseas.”

Blackfalds Fun Run set for this Saturday

BY SARAH MAETCHE Lacombe Express The Blackfalds Fun Run and Walk is returning for the sixth year. The annual run is set for this Saturday.

Abbey Centre Guest Services Coordinator Carol Simpson said the event is a great motivator to get the community to be active and involved.

“It’s really a great event. It’s familyfriendly and it’s for a worthwhile cause,” she said.

Simpson said over the past five years, the Optimist Club of Blackfalds hosted the run, but the Town of Blackfalds has taken over hosting the event this year.

“It’s evolved each and every year,” she said. “The Town felt it was a worthwhile event to continue on.”

For the first four years, the proceeds raised through the run went towards the Blackfalds Field House Society.

Attendees are encouraged to register early, but registrations are still accepted the morning of the race.

Participants will have access to showers and lockers for warming up, race preparation and storage of belongings in the Abbey Centre, but the registration fee does not include admission into the entire facility.

What you should know about Crohn’s Disease How would you feel, at 18 years of age, if suddenly you were diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease (CD)?

It would be devastating news. Unlike other well-known diseases, you would probably know nothing about this illness, and even its name sounds ominous. But you would not be alone. Crohn’s Disease is not a household word and, in spite of its importance, receives little in research dollars.

Crohn’s Disease affects 600,000 people in North America.

JONES strikes those between 20 to 35 years of age, with another peak in the 50s, but no age is immune to this disorder. And smokers are three times more likely to develop this disease.

It shows no sex bias as it affects both equally. In

about 20% of cases a blood relative has some form of this inflammatory bowel disease. Those of Jewish heritage have an increased risk but African Americans are less likely to develop it.

Patients suffer from recurrent episodes of abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, fever and weight loss.

Geographically it can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract from mouth to the anus.

But most commonly it involves the lower part of the small bowel, called the ileum.

There are several theories about what causes Crohn’s Disease.

Some researchers believe CD is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s defenses become confused and begin attacking its own cells. But whatever the reason, the bowel’s wall becomes repeatedly inflamed,

often with no rhyme nor reason as to when these attacks occur.

Initially, it may be difficult to know whether the patient suffers from Crohn’s Disease or ulcerative colitis which primarily affects the large bowel.

But blood tests, X-ray and colonoscopy examinations will eventually determine the diagnosis.

The most common complication is blockage of the intestine. Repeated episodes of inflammation cause swelling, scar tissue and narrowing of the bowel. In some cases the inflammatory response may be so intense that perforation of the intestine occurs and tunnels develop between the bowel, vagina, bladder or skin. Fissures or small tears may occur at the anal area.

at 18 years of age or older, causes a major readjustment in one’s life. As one young female patient said to me ,“If I’m out on a date I’m often thinking where is the bathroom if I need one, and how do I tell him I have this problem?”

Others say repeated attacks place a strain on their relationships. The uncertainty of recurrences make it hard to plan ahead.

Patients with Crohn’s Disease must get to know their disease and start a food diary to ascertain what foods cause trouble.

But, at the same time, be careful not to develop a food phobia as food does not cause CD, nor does it cure it. And above all else, they must not let this disease overwhelm their entire life. Some patients discover that if they consume lesser amounts of food there’s a decreased chance of bowel problems.

But this can be dangerous as it can lead over time to malnutrition and that’s the last thing a patient with Crohn’s Disease needs. For instance, intestinal bleeding can lead to iron defi-

ciency anemia.

It’s also important to make sure that patients with CD have sufficient amounts of Vitamin B12.

Since Vitamin B12 is absorbed at the end of the small bowel where CD often strikes, this vitamin may be lacking.

And since many patients with CD cannot tolerate lactose, it’s important they receive adequate amounts of calcium and Vitamin D. Treatment depends on the severity of the disease.

Cortisone and drugs to suppress the immune system may limit the inflammatory response.

But sometimes multiple surgeries are needed to remove inflamed portions of intestine.

Various skills gained through karate and kickboxing

BY KALISHA MENDONSA Lacombe Express Lacombe Karate and Kickboxing Senseis Mike Roe and Clint Robison work together to teach values of self-discipline, fitness and safety.

Each Sensei began their journey differently and have trained for most of their lives to be able to share their wealth of knowledge with new karate and kickboxing students.

Robison said that once you begin karate or kickboxing, it almost becomes an addiction. He said that there are many new things you can learn, and many reasons people take interest in the sport.

“I think everyone’s got their own take on it. I don’t think one person will have the same answer. Some people are into competing – they want to go out and get in that ring and do it. We start them off as a beginner and help them work their way up.

Other people just want to do it so they can get in shape,” said Robison.

“For me, I kind of did it for all those reasons. I trained, I competed, I lost and I won. Now, my main focus is helping other people and helping them fulfil their goals.

Basically, what I enjoy about teaching is seeing the evolution of the student, and watching them grow. It’s very rewarding for me to be able to see that growth.”

Robison has been participating in karate since 1993 and through this time has experienced many competitions and achievements. According to the Lacombe Karate and Kickboxing web site, Robison became a certified Second Degree Black Belt in 2005. He has also won the Men’s Black Belt Sparring Grand Championships five times.

There are three areas of competition in Zen Karate – kata, point sparring and continuous sparring. Katas are stances and holds that the students learn. Point sparring is quick and students achieve points for touching parts of another person’s body, but the intent is not to cause harm or pain. Continuous sparring is the category with the most contact.

Roe has achieved some impressive titles during his 13-year career, including several world titles that he achieved at the 2010 World Martial Arts Games in Las Vegas - first in continuous sparring, second in point sparring and third in kata competition -and in 2011 at World Karate Cham-

pionships in Cadiz, Spain, where he won third place in continuous sparring.

“I used to run around the house kicking, and my dad suggested I get into a martial art. I was given the choice between karate and hockey, and ended up joining. It’s addicting, like Clint said. It wasn’t easy for me right at the get-go. I had a little bit of natural ability, but I was a bit of a crazy kid when I was younger and this really changed me into a more disciplined, respectful person,” Roe said.

“I have the drive and I love competing. I love the feeling of it – the adrenaline and the feeling you get before. Aside from that, I like being able to accomplish and move up in rankings. There is excitement and the feeling of accomplishment when you move forward. I like sharing the knowl-

edge I have now.”

In the upcoming month, Roe is going to compete nationally and he said that he hopes to make it to Worlds again this year.

Karate and kickboxing can be contact sports, but there are a variety of styles and competition types to fit all kinds of skill levels and commitment.

“Even to someone who isn’t very active, I would say come and give it a try anyway and just go at your own pace. A lot of times, families do stuff for their kids but maybe they can take some time and learn something for themselves. I believe that at some point, everyone should know some form self-defence,” Roe said.

The classes range from young children to adults and private lessons are also available. Both instructors said they carry a lot

of passion for passing on their knowledge to others.

“I’m very glad to be able to do what I do.

It took me years to get where I’m at, and I enjoy it so much and now I get to share that,” Robison said.

Roe agreed, and added, “I love the sportit’s pretty much all I’ve ever done. I found a new love for sharing my knowledge, as well as I still enjoy getting out there myself. It’s definitely a sport that anybody can do – it doesn’t matter who you are. A little bit of hard work and determination and anybody can do it.”

Competitive, non-competitive and fitness classes are all available at the studio.

Flying Cross Ranch rolls out summer rodeo series

BY SARAH MAETCHE Lacombe Express In anticipation of the summer season, the dirt will be flying again at Flying Cross Ranch during the summer ranch rodeo series.

The local competitive ranch rodeo series, held just minutes north of Lacombe off Milton Road, allows competitors to get a taste of rodeo and participate in events, like barrel racing and team roping, who may not otherwise be eligible to compete in other professional or local rodeos.

“We started the series for beginners, mainly for the people who take lessons,” said Flying Cross Ranch Owner/Operator Roy Sturgeon. The summer series is designed for those with less rodeo experience and does have some structural differences and adaptations for each event to make it accessible to each and every competitor.

Riding off the success of the winter series, Sturgeon hopes to grow the summer series by opening up the events to anyone.

“We have competitors from six-years-old to 60-years-old,” he said. “It’s a very big event when it’s all said and done.”

Sturgeon said the summer series is very much a family event, with all members of the family competing in events, from dad roping to young children trying their hand at goat tying. Due to the location, the summer ranch rodeo series runs no matter the weather, with the flexibility

of events being moved into the indoor riding arena if needed.

In order to be eligible for finals and year-end prizes, competitors must enter in four of the six scheduled rodeos.

The first rodeo of the series was held on April 11th, with around 45 competitors registered in events.

The second rodeo of the series will be held on May 9th at Flying Cross Ranch starting at 6 p.m.

Following series dates are set for June 30th, July 11th, Aug. 8th, Sept. 12th, with the finals set for Sept.

26th.

Admission is free to spectators, but there is a cost to register in events.

Dinos return for football training camps The University of Calgary (U of C) Dinos return to ME Global Athletic Park in Lacombe for the fifth annual football development camps.

Two minor Football Development Camps will be held this June.

This is the fifth year the Dinos will be visiting Lacombe to provide these camps for Central Alberta minor and high school football.

The high school camp and minor football camp (Bantam and Pee Wee) will run simultaneously for three days, June 12th to 14th. There will also be a two-day introduction to football for younger Atom players on June 13th to 14th.

The U of C Dinos Football Camp provides regional minor football players the chance to develop their skills under the direct tutelage of Dinos’ coaches and players. The young players will experience a university program as the comprehensive camp includes a complete football program with both on and off-field development of university acceptance strategies.

Now its right in our backyard and all of Central Alberta Minor Football will benefit again this year. Plus we get to show off our great facility as many people from other communities come here,” said Wayne Haarstad, coach of the Lacombe Bantam Raiders.

LAPA marketing and fundraising chairperson Matthew Edwards notes this event is one of the major events at the busy facility.

“ME Global Athletic Park continues to host a diverse number of events such as this,” said Edwards. “We enjoy working with the Dinos to ensure this remains as top rate event. The location of our facility, the AstroTurf, fieldhouse and light allows us to draw groups from all over Alberta. It’s not a good idea to always try and do it yourself Our store recently had a DDIY sale which stands for ‘Don’t Do It Yourself’. It was a clever marketing idea that brought to light the disasters which can sometimes happen when people attempt to be home renovators after watching too many shows on HGTV. The horror stories I have heard would turn your hair grey if you knew the shortcuts people take and the corners they paint themselves into when attempting their own projects.

I had a discussion with a client recently about his project and the ‘cost’ of installing tile in his bathroom; he was rushing to get the project done on his few precious days off before leaving town again to return to work. When I asked him how much he made per hour he seemed shocked by the question but then comprehension spread across his face when I asked him how many hours it would take him to tile his bathroom. We calculated that with

A professional installation crew will be familiar with construction codes and specific subfloor requirements which a ‘DIY’er’ may not be versed on. Did you know that some insurance companies will not cover damage caused by flawed installation? If you and your buddy do electrical work in your home and a short starts a fire your insurance adjustor may come looking for a permit or a receipt from a certified electrician. I’m sure you get the picture.

Hiring a journeyman installer or trade is sometimes money in the bank and often it’s time on your side and several other clichés I might include.

A client of mine had her husband install laminate in her home and asked me to come and look at it as she felt something wasn’t quite right. The handy guy had installed all the boards straight so there were linear rows of boards all throughout her living room. Laminate and hardwood are supposed to be installed in a staggered pattern so that you never have four corners meeting together which can be a weak point in the floor. Her helpful handy hubby did not know this and (shockingly) did not read the instructions which came in the box of laminate.

So don’t do it yourself ! Save your time and precious weekend hours to do what you want to do and leave your home projects to the professionals; this applies to home renovations, house cleaning and often cooking dinner.
