Premier Prentice stops

Premier Jim Prentice took a few minutes to speak about education, his recent change to charitable donations and his budget while visiting Rimbey, last Tuesday.

He denied claims made at a political forum held Monday in Rimbey that school boards are to have their reserves frozen as well as reduce their front line costs.

The claims that reserves were to be frozen could have come from education minister’s Gordon Dirks earlier comments that school boards needed permission to access their reserves.

However, trustees from several school boards in the province spoke out against that decision and Dirks has since reversed his remarks.

“We have asked boards to work together with the ministry,’ said Prentice, adding reserves can be

used as needed.

In their budget, the province increased overall funding for Kindergarten to Grade 12 by two per cent, however, expected boards to reduce non-teaching costs by 2.7 per cent.

Prentice noted capital projects are ongoing.

“We have 200 school projects going on,” said Prentice. “We want to get the schools built.”

He also denied the Wildrose party’s allegations that the budget shows taxes going up by $2,500 for the average family.

He said taxes for a family of four with an average income will see an increase of $281.

“That’s less than a dollar a day.”

The premier confirmed that he has reconsidered the reduction to the charitable donation tax credit in the budget and it will maintain the previous rate.

“We listened to Albertans and agree it is not the right time to make the

change.

“But hearing from Albertans during this campaign, it’s become clear that this choice was more than simply unpopular.

Rather, Albertans have told me it was seen as contrary to our values as Albertans – values of generosity, community, and looking out for one another,” he said, in a press release.

It is true there is an election about to happen in our fair province.

Everyone is talking about it!

Well, pretty much everybody.

There are a few people, however, who are not!

I happened to be with some of them on Sat., April 18.

On this day, I had the chance to slip away from the norm of newspaper life, and into a world not governed by political candidates looking for ‘good ink’ to help rubber stamp a sure victory!

A cheer competition is not for the weak of heart.

The whole place kind of vibrated with noise and people!

We were given these brilliant orange bracelets and stood in a line-up that moved at the pace of a very slow snail for a very long time.

Finally, we found seats and, almost immediately, became part of the noise and the crowd. We carefully scanned the program, looking for our group.

Exelta! Yeah, there they were, fourth from the top.

When the group appeared, I, of course, had

eyes only for her, and as she flipped and danced her way through their number, I felt that incredible burst of pride we grandmas get to feel for no other reason than just because.

Her performance was stellar, but it was her smile that caught my attention.

So lovely. So sincere. So pleasing.

And, as I watched her, I knew in my heart that I would travel many, many miles and endure a very loud noise level just to see that smile.

“I loved your smile,” I told her, later.

“Oh, grandma, we are

told we have to smile,” she said. “That’s what we do.”

“Well, it worked,” I said.

“It certainly pleased your grandma.”

The cheer competition is over. The girls were awesome, coming home with silver medals and their smiles, apparently pasted on for the crowd’s benefit, now real and genuine!

As for me, I’m happy I had the opportunity to step out of the pages of the newspaper world for awhile and just be a proud grandma!

And, best of all, I got to see her smile!

It made it all worthwhile.

and it seems politics can be a blood sport, so ‘press’ be it good or bad, is important.

As the date to the election draws closer, candidates are stepping carefully along a trail littered with the hot rocks of controversy.

Education. Health care.

High taxes. Infrastructure.

Political forums are springing up everywhere, hence, reporters are out and about, scribbling in little notebooks furiously, looking for a way to write about new angles, new leads and new promises to very old issues.

And after long evenings when the crowd finally disperses, weary of promises easily made, easily broken, reporters close up their little notebooks and go home, or back to the office to untangle the political web weaved that particular evening, and turn in a non-biased, factual story.

However, on this particular Saturday, I attended something far more fun than a political forum!

I went to a cheer competition to watch my dear granddaughter perform!

And, of course, cheer her on!

I was dancing around my kitchen and listening to Blink 182’s album “Enema of the State”; this was a select choice of music during my miscreant years as a youth. The cleverly titled album seems suiting to listen to as the provincial election looms closer. I’m not particularly enthusiastic for politics, but someone

could guess that I was enjoying the party song after a day of work and getting amped up for the RimbeyRocky-Sundre candidate forum that was on April 20 in Rimbey.

It seems that having an election forum on the fourth month’s twentieth day is a little brass. Four-twenty is usually a day reserved for the dumpweed types wondering if aliens exists and lots of Bob Marley tracks spinning through the radio. I’m not sure of how four-twenty got its illicit designation, but one can hope that the festivities would spill into the election forum at the Rimbey Drop-In Center and turn the candidate panel into a live action moppet show.

It turned out, however, that the only mutt that evening was me and my pre-forum

kitchen dancing.

The forum captured comments from Tammy Cote, Jason Nixon, and Joe “Don’t Leave Me” Anglin. Nixon will sing the anthem for the Wildrose Party, Anglin is an Independent candidate, and Cote is planning on helping pull the fiscal levers for the Progressive Conservatives.

Whoever was supposed to be representing the New Democrats never showed up; he or she probably had Marley’s “Jamming” on repeat and decided not to leave the basement.

The forum ran for a couple of hours and was highlighted with some difficult questions from the audience members in the areas of property rights, education funding, heritage fund dos and don’ts, candidate qualifications,

and many others. I behaved myself and never got brave enough to ask the candidates what’s my age again?

Undoubtedly there are a varied amount of issues, concerns, and inquisitions stemming from the pending provincial election.

I was drifting in and out of some mid-evening daydreaming throughout the forum—but my attention was restored when education funding was addressed through the questions from the audience. Joel Ward, the prime minister of RDC, had announced budget cuts to the faculty members and students before the end of the winter term. The English program basically was a bottle of rum that had gotten poured out into the parking lot with little left for anyone to enjoy. With the program cuts and shifts—I have to

now depart from RDC after another year and potentially go to university in Calgary or Edmonton to finish my degree.

The candidates at the forum in the Drop-In Center had a lot to discuss and promote for their campaigns; I didn’t get the clear cut answers for the future of Alberta’s education funding as I had hoped.

But, I’m glad I attended the discussion—I put some names to faces and got to hear the candidates speak for themselves and his or her parties. My own pending voting decision will come easier now.

I’m certainly not going away to college to become a political scientist, but it seems that all the small things will decide the outcome of all the voting on May 5.

The premier of Alberta rolled into Rimbey Wednesday at around 3 p.m. appearing relaxed and calm, despite the fact his campaigning bus had been rear-ended earlier that afternoon.

At approximately 1:45 p.m. Rocky Mountain house RCMP officers were dispatched to a collision between Premier Jim Prentice’s campaigning bus and a SUV in Clearwater County near Rocky Mountain House.

The driver and sole occupant of the SUV (who was one of his security team) suffered minor injuries and the nine occupants of the bus were uninjured.

The premier arrived at the Beatty House only slightly later than the scheduled time, and with Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre

candidate Tammy Cote, at his side, he took a few moments to shake people’s hands and chat.

Prentice seemed confident and at ease and not at all worried about being rear-ended or the upcoming election, as he mingled with the handful of supporters who had gathered on the lawn of the Beatty House. Many of those present had signs supporting Cote.

After visiting with the crowd for a short time, he was given a tour of the Beatty House, which he seemed to thoroughly enjoy.

Before the premier left Rimbey, he took time to play a game of ladder ball with 12-year-old Evan Barr, chatted with a young family who wished to talk about the benefits of midwives and poised for a group photo in front of the fireplace in the Beatty House.

put on the hot seat as they were peppered with questions from a packed house last Monday at a forum sponsored by the Rimbey library.

“I saw the letter, but I knew nothing about it. My campaign had nothing to do with the letter,” said Cote.

“It was totally inappropriate and my campaign had nothing to do with it, either,” said Nixon.

The forum then took a different turn, when Reg Kreil asked the candidates what plans they had for doctors, specifically surgeons, to move to Rimbey.

“We need to offer an environment where it’s conducive to come here,” said Cote.

Nixon said Sundre has incentives that help attract professionals and that Athabasca University is creating programs to encourage young people who grew up in rural Alberta to return to their roots after they receive their education.

Anglin said offering surgical care in Rimbey would relieve the pressure on Red Deer Hospital.

The candidates were questioned about the Heritage Trust Fund.

Nixon said Wildrose plans to invest 20 per cent of income by 2017, Cote said the PCs plan to put 25 per cent of all resource revenue in the Heritage Trust Fund. continued on page 7

The candidates all stated adamantly they would not cross the floor, no matter what happened on May 5.

“I did not walk across the floor,” said Anglin.

Nixon pointed out it would cost a Wildrose candidate $100,000 to be a floor crosser, now.

“I have always been a PC. I have never held another party’s card,” Cote said.

Mayor Rick Pankiw asked the candidates about the PCs soft budget.

“I think it is completely fiscally irresponsible,” said Nixon. “There is a lot of waste in the current government.”

“The spending has not been abated in the budget,” said Anglin.

But Cote defended the budget, saying the PCs are willing to pull all levers; revenue, expenses and borrowing.

Jim Vetch told the candidates he has been very disillusioned with politicians who have made promises they have not kept.

“What will keep you guys accountable?” he said.

“I will not lie to you. I’m not really sure you can put that into legislation,” said Cote.

Nixon noted the fine for floor crossing and the fact that any MLA who lies would be fired are ways the Wildrose would measure accountability.

“As an Independent I don’t make decisions in the back room,” said Anglin.

Nixon said he would side with his constituents rather than toe the party line if necessary.

However, Anglin disputed this.

“I know he wants a free vote, but it’s not that way.”

Cote was not as quick to take a stand regarding which side she would take regarding controversial issues.

“It would depend,” she said.

Nixon and Anglin agreed hydraulic fracking can be done safely, if industry follows the correct procedures.

“We do need to keep in mind this is the only earth we have to live in,” said Cote.

Anglin was quick to slam the PCs regarding health care.

“It’s amazing that how many people (in health care) there are with six figure incomes who actually can’t answer when you ask them what they

do,” he said.

“We need to make sure AISH (assured income for the severely handicapped) funding is increasing with growth,” said Nixon.

“We really need to make sure government officials make themselves accesible,” added Cote. “Alberta offers the best AISH funding, but some people are going to fall through the cracks.”

The PCs decision to cut funding for school boards and not allow them to use their reserves is a sign that the government panicked, said Nixon.

But Cote said school boards can use their budgets to get them through this year.

“Education is a priority for me. We need to have a voice and I would be that voice and speak up on education.”

“The only way to stop your taxes from going up is to vote Wildrose,” said Nixon in his closing remarks.

Albertans are hurting and they are worried about their jobs and making ends meet.”

“It’s not about parties,” said Anglin. “Its about the issues that affects you. That’s democracy.”

“Our economy is at a critical state, we need to start thinking about our future,” said Cote.

NDP leader Rachel Notley gave the leaders’ debate the ‘wow’ factor, says Hannah Schlamp, the party’s candidate for the Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre riding.

“I was so proud of Rachel,” said Schlamp “She really drove it home.”

Schlamp believes Notley succeeds a long line of NDP politicians who deliver what they preach.

“They are honest and trustworthy and set a good example in government.”

The 19-year-old University of Alberta student is a native of Edmonton majoring in Spanish with political science as a minor.

She is a city girl, but has family connections in the Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House- Sundre riding.

“I have family in this riding and I really believe in

the NDPs,” she said. “After 44 years we definitely need a change.”

Schlamp likes the NDPs plan to freeze taxes for Albertans who make up to $125,000 and then increase them on a sliding scale depending on the individual’s income. She believes increasing corporate tax from 10 to 12 per cent is a good thing.

“Corporations need to be paying their share,” she said.

Schlamp said the educa-

tion picture has to change.

She noted the current budget does not allow for funding for additional teachers, even though 12,000 new students are expected in schools throughout Alberta.

She sees this as resulting in overcrowded classrooms, affecting the quality of education for the young people.

“A kindergarten class with 28 students. That would be awful. A regular teacher can’t handle that.”

Schlamp sees health care in dire need of a shake up, with new hospitals needed and more help for seniors whom she said will experience a $50 million cut in their drug plan under the guidelines of the new budget.

She is excited about the NDPs’ vision of providing a job creation tax credit.

Schlamp said she plans to be in the riding soon to deliver signs.

Library to hold fundraiser for building fund

Sale day: The Allen B Auction held last Friday attracted a huge crowd and it seemed cars were parked as far as the eye could see near Highway 20. The weather was favourable which was, no doubt, an added attraction to encourage people to come out to the popular event.

The Rimbey Municipal Library is inviting residents to experience some fine dining and, in the process, help the library raise much-needed dollars for its building fund.

A steak and lobster, chicken and ribs dinner will be catered by Bob Ronnie at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre on May 9.

Cocktails are at 5:30 and

dinner is at 6:30 p.m.

All proceeds will go towards the library’s building fund, said librarian Jean Keetch.

“We need to expand, how that’s going to look we’re not sure, but we need some more cash.”

As well as a delicious meal and cash bar, the evening will include games of chance and a live and silent auction.

Keech said the librarysponsored entertainment including St. James Gate and the Popowichs earlier this year to provide entertainment for the community.

“If we made money that was good, but our primary goal was to provide entertainment. This event is to make money. We really need people to open their wallets.”

Tickets for the event may be purchased at the library.

Wellness centre for cancer patients in process of becoming reality A group of determined people from Sylvan Lake who share a goal of increasing support for individuals and families affected by cancer, are working diligently behind the scenes to create a holistic wellness

centre for Central Alberta.

The centre is to be set up in Red Deer.

“We want to enhance and complement services already in place, that help cancer patients,” said Debbie Oostinde from Sylvan

Lake, who spearheaded the project and is chairing the organizing committee.

“There are a great many cancer patients in Central Alberta and we want to provide a comprehensive range of supports,

resources and programs to improve the quality of the life of each individual without having the added stress of having to travel,” she added.

The group, based in Sylvan Lake, is hoping to become an affiliate of wellspring.

“We want to enhance and complement services already in place that help cancer patients.”

Rimbey RCMP arrest and charge child pornography distributor

This week, Rimbey RCMP Detachment responded to 50 calls for service including a break and enter, assault, sex assault, child pornography, police pursuits and other serious matters.

Police service dog locates culprits Early Wednesday morning, a citizen called 911 to report an erratic driver on Highway 2 near Ponoka.

Mounties from Rimbey and Ponoka responded to the area and located the vehicle driving west on Highway 53. When police activated their emergency lights and sirens, the truck did not stop. With police in hot pursuit, the driver failed to

negotiate a turn onto Highway 771 from Highway 53 and crashed in the ditch.

Two persons were arrested near the disabled vehicle and two fled on foot into the bush nearby. A Police Service Dog attended the scene and subsequently located the two culprits hiding in the woods. One of the men sustained a bite on his leg from the pursuing canine officer.

The investigation revealed the truck was stolen from Edmonton. Many charges are pending the conclusion of the investigation. No one was seriously injured in the crash.

Man charged with distribution of child pornography On Thursday, April 23, Rimbey Mounties teamed up with the Integrated Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit and conducted a search warrant on a rural residence near Rimbey. A 51-yearold local man was arrested during the search and has been criminally charged with possession, accessing and distribution of child pornography by way of the

Thieves break into rural residence Sometime in the last three weeks, unknown thieves broke into a house and outbuildings on a rural property west of Rimbey near Range Road 42 north of Highway 53. The criminals stole power tools, an electric log splitter and a leaf blower. Police are currently investigating the matter and following up on leads at this time.

Teenage girl charged with theft Your local detachment members continue to target chronic habitual offenders in the community who have been released from jail on conditions to abide by. A teenage girl, who is very well known to police, was

arrested and charged once again with theft and for breaching her court conditions. She was subsequently charged and taken back into custody.

Reduction in break and enters Our efforts to reduce crime in our community over the last year by targeting repeat offenders has proved to be worth the effort. Statistics reveal a 31per cent reduction in break and enters from a year ago. Detachment members have partnered with probation and other police agencies to ensure that those who have been historically criminally active are monitored closely. Police will continue to utilize every tool possible in an effort to reduce crimes in Rimbey.

New system for Rimbey and District Rural Crime Watch Rimbey and District Rural Crime Watch (RCW) Association is now capable of receiving up-to-date fan outs via email. This will benefit members with more timely and detailed information from officers investigating crimes. Police can now send out an email from the scene of a crime and reach members of RCW in certain circumstances for their assistance instantaneously. This new system went on-line on April 8th and has already proven to be a huge benefit to the partnership. Bentley library to provide free cards from May to August

The Bentley Municipal Library is offering a unique birthday gift to the Bentley community.

This year starting May 1, and until August 31, free library cards are being offered in recognition of Bentley’s Centennial Birthday.

Bentley library funding comes from many areas. The town gives funding based on per capita. The library gets an operating grant from municipal affairs based on official census numbers. Lacombe County kicks in based on the

number of rural county households the library serves. Parkland Regional Library (PRL) supports all the libraries in its jurisdiction.

In Bentley, the Bentley Library Society helps fund projects and programming.

Fees collected from annual library cards were normally a part of the library’s funds.

To offset that funding shortfall, some other libraries now offering free cards have got increased funding from their municipality and/or are finding other funds elsewhere.

The Bentley library is staging a fundraiser.

Bentley is going to try free cards with a one-year loan period and then re-access the program. Any patron already holding a card before May 1 will have a one-year extension added.

Other libraries say they did not want library access to be limited by library fees and hope the introduction of free cards will entice more people to come in and use the library, but that is as yet to be determined.

The community is reminded that the local library offers many more services than just books, newspapers, magazines, videos, audio books, photocopying, computers for research, on-line resources, in-house programming, and access to other PRL libraries.

Bentley library regular hours are 10:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, noon - 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays, from 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays, and closed on holidays.

Rules regarding election coverage for The Rimbey Review Newspaper Elections are important events in the community, and The Rimbey Review is committed to covering them. However, The Review, like all legitimate newspapers, has several rules in place when it comes to municipal, provincial, federal or school board elections.

Commentary from the public and letters to the editor are suspended when it comes to political issues and commentary in support of (or against) a party or candidate’s stance.

We have already rejected several letters to the editor on these grounds.

This also goes for opinion submissions

on any party’s stance and those of its candidates.

We endeavour to provide fair and balanced election coverage.

All candidates will be interviewed once by the Review’s editor during the election campaign and all reasonable efforts will be made to contact candidates for a face-to-face interview.

If the candidate is not available for a face-to-face interview, all reasonable efforts for a telephone or email interview will be made.

No submitted article of any other kind, endorsing or decrying any candidate, regardless of source, will be printed in The Review during the election campaign.

Some candidates, organizations or political parties have been known to conduct well-organized letter writing campaigns, including writers from out of the region, in an effort to get free publicity for their candidate and to influence the election.

This policy is intended to eliminate that undue influence.

STANLEY NASLUND (1930-2015) A whole lot of knowledge went to heaven on April 16, 2015 when our dear father, Stanley John Naslund, departed this world at the glorious age of 84 years. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and loyal friend. May he be welcomed into God’s kingdom in heaven.

Stan was born on December 2, 1930 in Blairmore, Alberta to parents, Per and Tea Naslund. He was raised to appreciate the majestic splendor of our mountain community and enjoyed skiing, hiking, snowshoeing, hunting and fishing with rod (and early years occasionally dynamite), photography, gardening and being a member of the army cadets. He prized knowledge and education which inspired him to pursue a career in teaching. He began employment as a coal miner in the Crowsnest Pass area at the age of 18 after graduating high school. After three years, he changed career direction attaining his teaching degrees and started mentoring children in the Beaver Mines and Lundbreck area and ending his teaching career after 37 years. He was also talented with his hands fixing anything broken and creating magnificent woodworking projects from unique canes to long handled shoehorns. He gifted all of his work to friends and family. Stan was a proud member of the Volunteer Fire Department in Lundbreck for 25 years. He was a truly generous man whom we all admired. He will be fondly remembered by many former students, family, and friends and dearly missed.

He is survived by his beloved friend and wife, Bessie Naslund of Lundbreck, Alberta; his cherished children, Sharon (Rudy) Boldt, Mel (Tammy) Naslund, Darryl (Shelagh) Naslund, Cindy (Frank) Simpson and Tammee (Sheldon) Wiebe; his precious grandchildren, Crystal (Chris) Gardener, Teah (Scott) Duperon, Jerrett Naslund, Karmell Naslund, Dani Naslund, Chase (Brittany) Simpson and Levi (Rebecca) Simpson, Riley Wiebe, Kimberlee Wiebe and Josee Wiebe; his great grandchildren, Izabella, Brodey, Jenna, Brayson, Dailee, Jewel and Ivy; his brother, Gunnar (Mary) Naslund; his sisters, Sally Mann and Siri (Harvey) Thibeault; mother of Mel’s three daughters Rebecca (Tom) Spicer, his special niece Charlene (Jason) Smith; and his many extended family and friends.

He was predeceased by his loving wife, Phyllis; his parents, Per and Tea; and his siblings, Steve and Sonja.

A private family celebration honouring Stan’s life was held at Fantin’s Funeral Chapel in Blairmore on April 21, 2015 with Pastor Al Robinson officiating. An open Memorial Service will be held for the community and will be announced at a later date.

REAUGH It is with great sadness the family of Gordon (Gord) Russell Reaugh of Sylvan Lake, Alberta and formerly of Rimbey, announces his sudden passing at Quartzsite, Arizona on March 14, 2015 at the age of 59 years. Gord was born on November 24, 1955 to Melvin (Mel) and Margaret (Eleanor) Reaugh. Gord married Joanne Rude and together they had two sons, Devin and Garrett.

Entering the “Oil Patch” after High School, Gord worked first in the seismic industry and then entered the oil and gas production sector, working in the Rimbey area and Northern British Columbia. Later, after setting up his own consulting firm, Right Track Oilfield Services Ltd., Gord worked on numerous oilfield construction projects as manager/supervisor. His career in the petroleum industry spanned 40 years.

In the oil and gas industry, Gord was well respected for his dedication to detail, fairness and respect for colleagues and workers and his ability to “consistently deliver results within time and budget expectations”.

Predeceased in death by his parents, Gord is survived by his beloved sons, Devin and Garrett and one grandson Dylan. Gord also leaves to mourn, his life partner Ellen Robertson of Sylvan Lake, Alberta, two sisters, Marilee Fath and her son Ryan, and Joanne (Garry) Marek and their children, Michael and Morgan, numerous other nieces and nephews and many close friends.

Gord enjoyed many outdoor activities such as snowmobiling, camping, fishing.

Quadding and motorcycling.

A memorial service and celebration of Gord’s life will be held from the Forshee Hall in Forshee, Alberta on Saturday May 2, 2015 at 2:00 PM. If friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the SPCA 4505-77 Street Red Deer, AB T4P 2J1.

announcements COPITHORNE Eileen G. Copithorne of Bluffton, Alberta passed away peacefully at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Long Term Care on Thursday, April 16, 2015 at the age of 92 years.

Eileen will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her husband of 55 years, Ian; her son, Cody Copithorne of Bluffton; three cherished grandchildren; two great grandchildren; the mother of her grandchildren, Janet Copithorne of Spruce Grove; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Eileen was predeceased by her parents; her son, Dallas; and two brothers, Vern and Charles Ward.

With respect for Eileen’s wishes, no formal Funeral Service will be held. Cremation took place at the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer. MILLAR Heather M. Millar of Rimbey, Alberta passed away at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Long Term Care on Saturday, April 18, 2015 at the age of 51 years.

Heather was born in Provost, Alberta on July 13, 1963.

Following her graduation, Heather moved to Calgary where she met her husband.

To this union, their son, Ian was born in December, 1982. Heather was later diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, which took a toll on the young family. Due to her health, Heather left their son in his father’s care and moved around for a short time until settling in Rimbey. She has resided the last seventeen years in Long Term Care, where she remained until her passing. Heather will be remembered by everyone she came in contact with; as she was bubbly, full of life, loved to visit, and possessed a passion for a good card game.

She was also an avid supporter of the MS Society, and took part in many MS Walks towards finding a cure.

Heather touched many lives … and many will remember her for her own zest and love for life! She will be greatly missed.

Heather will be lovingly remembered by her best friend and partner of 17 years, ‘her man’, Chris Lauritsen of Eckville; her son, Ian Coulas of Surrey, B.C.; as well as her cherished granddaughter, Shyann Mandrake also of Surrey, B.C. She will also be lovingly remembered by her brother, Tim Millar (Elaine Harrison) of Vernon, B.C.; and her sister, Crystal (Dale) Rudy of Abbotsford, B.C.; in addition to many nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many treasured friends. Heather was predeceased by her mother, Maureen in 2011, and her father, Jim in 1985.

Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, Rimbey on Thursday, April 23, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Father Chris Gnanaprakasam, Celebrant. Mavis Winnie Allison August 15, 1942 - April 20, 2015 Mrs. Mavis Allison of High River, Alberta passed away quietly surrounded by her family at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary on April 20, 2015 at the age of 72 years. She was affectionately known to all her friends and family as Mame.

Born in Rimbey, AB on August 15, 1942, to Clifford and Winnie Carlson, Mame was the eldest of five children. She attended the Rose and Crestomere schools. On May 3, 1960 she married Don Allison. Together they raised four children, Rodney of South Korea, Donna (Dave Boll) of Rimbey, Dale of Blackie, and Jacqui (Alden) Stright of Nanton. The family lived in various places, and in each stop Mame would quickly settle into working with special needs children, or giving a special brand of tender care to seniors.

Mame was a people person, and a believer in volunteering and giving back. She especially enjoyed working with children. It would be quite normal for her to find children who needed extra care. She would pick them up, prepare them school lunches and made sure they got to school. Mame will be remembered as a gentle soul, who always cheered for the little guy. She loved animals, especially Canada Geese, antiques and listening to old time country music.

She and her husband Don enjoyed travelling, and visited both Australia and Korea.

They also made many road trips to sightsee and stay acquainted with friends and relatives.

Besides her husband Don and four children, she leaves loving memories for her two granddaughters, Amanda Boll of Rimbey and Traci (Brad) of Nanton; as well as four great-grandchildren Jeremiah, Jessica, Dominick and Dean. She was very excited about meeting her fifth great grandchild, a little girl this July. She also leaves fond memories for brother Ron (Colleen), sister Ann (Larry) and brother David (Connie), Uncle Ralph Huston and Aunt Clara Hopps. She will be remembered always by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, her in-laws, special friends Carol and Donna as well as a host of others. She now joins her parents, Winnie and Clifford Carlson, sister Carol Pragnell and special friend Marg Markham.

The family wishes to thank the High River Hospital and Unit 57 at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre for their excellent and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre - Unit 57 (1331 29th Street, NW, Calgary, AB T2N 4N2).

This is done as part of an integrated vegetation management plan consisting of mowing, hand picking, hand brushing, and brush mulching. Vegetation control provides for safe roadways through improving sightlines and visibility for motorists and to allow motorists to detect wildlife in the roadside ditches. On April 10, 2015 at 9:30 a.m. a large group of people were awaiting their day in court to have their opportunity to dispute what appeared to be unjust parking tickets written by the peace/bylaw officer hired at great expense by the town.

Due to the fact there was no court in session April 10 all tickets were quashed.

Most of us were looking forward to the opportunity to express our bewilderment at being ticketed for what we perceived, even after checking bylaws, to being legally parked.

Discussions while awaiting our court time revealed a gentleman visiting from out of town was parked at the Co-op on a snowy Sunday morning.

The parking lot was completely blanketed in snow (shown in a picture), but he

received a ticket while checking to see if the store was open.

Surely this is not the welcome we want to give to our visitors.

Would not an officer’s time be better spent catching drivers making U turns in the middle of main street, our provincial highway, so they could access a parking stall or by catching speeders going through a playground zone?

Another ticket was given for parking legally immediately to the left of a no parking control device that indicated no parking with an arrow drawn to the right.

All tickets came via mail some weeks following these incidents of apparent infractions with pictures that only led to further confusion, as they

appeared to support innocence.

Some questions were raised about the accuracy of painted yellow lines and other parking control devices.

All of these concerns were brought to town council on April 13. I was assured they would be looked into.

I look forward to hearing from the town and will write again to bring out the rest of the story.

In closing, I respectfully request the town council would encourage or direct their peace/ bylaw officer to develop community relationships as the RCMP have done.

I also hope that this is not a step taken by town council simply to increase revenue.
