Wolf cull ends in the province for the year with 84 animals killed

PHOTO SUBMITTED

The B.C. government has completed the first season of a five-year targeted cull of grey wolf populations. By Tom Fletcher The B.C. government has killed 11 wolves in the South Selkirk

Mountains and another 73 in the South Peace region in the first year of a five-year plan to protect dwindling cari-

bou herds. The South Selkirk program left seven to 10 wolves alive because they were not target-

ing caribou, and their movements continue to be tracked. That mountain caribou herd is down to 14, compared

to 18 last year and 46 in 2009. The South Peace herds have also seen significant losses from

wolves, with 37 per cent of adult mortalities confirmed as wolf kills. Four herds in the region, the Quintette, Moberly, Scott and Kennedy-Siding, were targeted in the wolf removal program. The 700-member Graham herd, the largest in the South Peace, is being left without protection as a control group. The program to shoot wolves from the air was a last resort after targeted hunting and trapping of wolves proved inadequate, sometimes splitting up wolf packs and increasing predation of caribou. The South Selkirk herd has been subject to intensive protection efforts on both sides of the Canada-U.S. border. In 2007 the province banned logging and roadbuilding in its 2.2 million-hectare B.C. range and restricted

The modern program began in 2003, after decades of managed hunting and other wolf control measures. For the first part of the 20th century, B.C. offered a bounty on wolves that ended in 1955. Beginning in 1950, baits laced with poison were used in bait stations and later dropped onto frozen lakes and rivers, which killed other species as well as wolves. Large-scale poisoning in wilderness areas was suspended in 1960, but targeted baiting to protect livestock continued until 1999.

College of the Rockies opens dedicated Ktunaxa classroom

College of the Rockies Vice-President, Education, Stan Chung and Ktunaxa Nation Council Chair Kathryn Teneese celebrate the opening of the Ktunaxa classroom at the College. College of the Rockies Vice-President, Education, Stan Chung was pleased to celebrate the opening of a Ktunaxa classroom at the College on Wednesday, April 22. Also present at the event was Ktunaxa Nation Council Chair, Kathryn Teneese. The dedicated Ktunaxa classroom will provide a visible point of continuity for new or potential aboriginal students to connect with

current Ktunaxa students. The room will host programs such as Bladerunners – an employment training program focussed on providing job readiness skills and education – and the Ktunaxa Workplace Essential Skills training that are currently held in other locations within the College. It will also provide a location for cultural activities, workshops, drop-in sessions,

coaching and mentoring sessions and more. “This classroom presents the College with another means to contribute to our 40-year partnership with the Nation,” said Chung. “We will be able to improve services and create a sense of place for our Aboriginal students in a highly visible location on our campus. This classroom also offers an opportunity for the College community to learn more about the Nation and Aboriginal learners.” After dedicating the room for Ktunaxa use, College and Ktunaxa representatives celebrated together over a meal of elk tacos. “The Ktunaxa Nation and the College of the Rockies have a proud history of collaboration within Ktunaxa territory,” said Kathryn Teneese. “This shared space further solidifies this strong relationship and gives the Ktunaxa Nation and all Aboriginal learners a space to not only learn, but teach others as well.” Learn more about Col-

The Weekday View

Letter: Applauding hard council decisions I attended the April 13, 2015 Council Meeting at City Hall. During the Council’s Report portion of the Agenda, the Cranbrook Arts Council and Fire Hall were brought up.....again. Yes, a past council allocated $500,000 to Arts & Culture, not specifically to the Cranbrook & District Arts Council. Over the past six years the City of Cranbrook has already given the Cranbrook Arts Council $104,000! The City has also contributed significant dollars to other arts and cultural needs throughout the community during that same period. So it can’t be said that past and present Councils have not supported arts and cul-

ture in Cranbrook! According to an Engineering Report done two years ago, the cost to upgrade the Fire Hall to meet Provincial Codes would be at least $1.2 million of taxpayers’ hard earned dollars. I have always been concerned that whichever group took over the Fire Hall, they must prove they also had the funds to maintain the building and that it wouldn’t default back to the City for expenses. City Council is elected to manage and be fiscally responsible for Cranbrook’s operations through taxpayers’ dollars. Cranbrook’s infrastructure is in dire need of upgrades which must

come from those same taxpayers’ dollars. Ask any Councillor and I’m sure they can give you a list of needed City projects. During the last election, Cranbrook citizens made it very clear, by voting in a totally new council, that they wanted a change to a more fiscally responsible leadership at City Hall. Making the decision to remove or replace anything in the budget is always a tough one and this Council has made some very hard decisions on our behalf. I applaud Council for making the hard decisions that a few may not like but I’m standing behind them. They are making decisions for all of Cranbrook, not just one group. ~ Denise Pallesen, Cranbrook

Letter: City council should stay the course Although I am of the opinion that it is my duty to vote, I have not made my personal views known. However, about two years ago I started to notice things going on in our city that concerned me. Some of these concerns were: 1) Fountain at the Fire Hall—I drive by the Fire Hall daily and I noticed that the construction of the fountain was taking forever and I thought that this must be costing us a fortune. I then heard that the city workers were working on the fountain when they had nothing else to do so we weren’t really incurring labour costs. I am sure that these workers were on the city payroll. They were not working for

free. If they had nothing else to do (and they were being paid anyway) that raises a whole new batch of questions! 2) Next thing I noticed was another marathon project on 14th Avenue South, just below the Catholic Church. The end result of this is a weed and garbage filled ditch. 3) Then there were all the benches on 14th Avenue South. I have yet to see anyone sitting on these benches. Why not put these at some of the bus stops? 4) Next was the pile of rocks at the south entrance to town. I watched a rental crane sit there for days and days. The end result is a sign that you cannot

read (day or night) contrary to one ex-councilor’s opinion. What did this project cost us? 5) Then I started hearing suggestions about dog parks and traffic circles and other grandiose schemes including the old Fire Hall/CDAC issue. All the while our streets were getting worse and worse and our infrastructure was getting more fragile. These activities really concerned me and when I discovered that there were citizens running against the incumbent mayor and council and who shared my concerns, I volunteered to assist in an election campaign, something I had never done before. While I was out assisting this individual I discovered that a very large number of people shared my concerns. These citizens and I voted in a new council

and mayor with approximately 65% of the votes cast. The old guard was replaced en masse! What does this say about their ideas and policies? It says that the voters did not like the direction the city was going. I am not suggesting that the previous Mayor and council were wrong in all their decisions, just that the voters wanted something different going forward. In fact, I applaud all those who put their name forward. It is a big commitment and I for one am appreciative of their efforts, whether I agree with them or not. My final comments are directed toward our new Mayor and Council. The majority have spoken. Do not let a few dozen prolific letter writers sway you. Stay the course. The first Kootenay Warriors Spring Hockey Challenge is in the books and by all accounts was a tremendous success. “It was a fantastic weekend,” says Corey Spring, one of the Warriors Program organizers. “Things kicked off on Friday night with some exciting end to end hockey that continued right through Sunday. Beyond the on-ice action, we had great spectators, and the out of town teams had many positive comments about the Warriors Challenge and the hospitality they received from City businesses during their stay.” The Kootenay Warriors Spring Hockey Program is in its first year and has three divisions: 2004, 2005 and 2006 featuring the best players born in these three years. Over the weekend, the 2004 and 2005 teams had exhibition games against the 2004 and 2005 Southern Alberta Battle teams and the 2006 Warriors played host to a full four team tournament. “The 2006 tournament featured the West Kootenay Avalanche,

Construction Question Taking a shower... how hard can it be?

by Menno Dueck Take a minute and add up the number of family members, friends, colleagues who have suffered a sprain or broken bones that made it very difficult, or even impossible, to get in and out of a traditional tub/ shower combo. A number of years ago I had a spiral leg fracture, no-weight-bearing for 4 months and our then house only had the typical tub/shower combo. My wife, Christie, injured both feet last spring, needed a wheel chair and air cast for 12 weeks but we were now in a house with a walk in shower. Getting in and out of a tub on a daily basis was dangerous and frustrating for me. Christie was able to safely enter the shower and sit down. We will never be without a walk in shower or walk in tub. Jane and Robert’s home is in an adult gated community, has level entry, wide hallways and doorways, master and guest room ensuites. Jane broke her hip and despite having 2 bathrooms, could not safely access a shower; both had traditional tub/ shower combos. Robert hired a contractor to replace the guest tub/shower with a walk in shower and bench. The renovation, taking place while Jane was recuperating, only added to an already difficult situation. Mike bought a renovated heritage home with large second floor master suite complete with deep soaking tub. The only shower was a walk in stall in the basement. With a knee replacement on the horizon, he chose to replace the deep soaking tub with a jetted walk in tub/shower combo. He didn’t have to give up his long baths to have safety and security. According to a Statistics Canada study (2009/2010), about 4.27 million Canadians (12 and older), suffered an injury severe enough to limit their usual activities with sprains and strains the most common (51%), and fractures and broken bones 17%. Age wise, about 26% of seniors and 21% of adolescents sustained fractures and broken bones. Based on these stats (and the number of kids you personally know who have broken an ankle or leg) safe and easy access to showering and bathing is a must and has nothing to do with “aging in place”. Check out your bathrooms. How hard would it be for you or someone in your family to have a shower if mobility became an issue? Past articles are posted on DueckEnterprises.com under Blog. Message from the Kin Club First of all, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the business owners who have signed up to be in our show again in this, our 40th year. I also give thanks to the citizens of Cranbrook for coming to support us each year. Booth

Over the 40 years that we have been doing the show it has changed format, changed location and has had to deal with a changing commercial marketplace. Local business has had to deal with competition from on-line businesses, like eBay and Amazon, and marketing efforts have grown to include Facebook and Twitter. So does a show like this really matter anymore? You can say that I’m biased, but I think it does. The opportunity to meet face to face with your potential customer just isn’t there with on-line shopping. Nowadays people skip through TV advertisements when watching shows they’ve recorded on their PVRs. You can’t try before you buy on the internet, and you don’t know who you are dealing with because you won’t meet them face to face.

This year we’ve teamed up with the folks from West Coast Amusements to bring you family entertainment and a showcase of home and recreation products in one place. There will also be a Mario Kart video game tournament for kids and, of course, our Bouncy Tent will be on site for kids to burn off some energy while mom and dad check out the show. Please come on down and help us to raise funds towards or goal of working with the Lacrosse Association to build an outdoor lacrosse box near the skate park. The show runs from Friday at 5:00PM to 9:00PM and Saturday from 10:00AM to 9:00PM. Admission has been reduced and simplified this year. For adults, seniors, teens and children 7 years and up admission is only $2.00, while children 6 and under are free.

Iodine and IQ

Prior to the 1920’s people living in developed countries around the world were smaller and had lower IQ’s than what is considered normal today. This was, in part, due to chronic and widespread iodine deficiency. Iodine is a critical mineral for the manufacture of thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormones, in turn, regulate metabolism and physical and mental development. If you don’t get enough iodine you are more likely to be tired, gain weight, experience depression, have mental impairment, suffer from fibrocystic breast disease and get breast, thyroid or prostate cancer. In the 1920’s iodine was added to table salt in an attempt to address this problem. It worked really well and since then there has been a steady decline in the frequency of goitre (enlarged thyroid due to iodine deficiency), improvement in IQ and growth. Unfortunately, iodine deficiency is once again relatively common in North America. Contributing to this has been an increase in the consumption of packaged foods made with noniodized salt, people are following public health messages about reducing their intake of salt and

we are seeing increasing levels of bromine in our bodies. Iodine is mostly found in seaweeds (there is hardly any in sea salt) and if sea vegetables and iodized salt are not consumed you won't have much iodine. Bromine is a mineral that comes from the same family as iodine and it competes with iodine for transport into cells. An excess of bromine reduces the ability of the cell to take up iodine and the result is less than ideal levels of thyroid hormone production. Bromine is found in non-stick cookware, pool and hot tub chemicals, disinfectants, pesticides, fire retardant chemicals and fabric treatments and in some brominated asthma inhalers. As bromine levels build, iodine becomes less effective. If you avoid table salt, have a thyroid condition or any of the symptoms listed above you might consider having your iodine, bromine and chlorine (also blocks iodine) levels tested. A first morning urinary iodine can help your health care provider determine whether or not iodine supplementation is appropriate for you. Be cautious with iodine as too much can also cause a hard to detect hypothyroidism.

OBITUARY BALLARD, Edna Elizabeth 1921 – 2015 In the early morning hours of Monday, April 20, 2015, Edna Elizabeth Ballard passed away at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital at the age of 93 years. Edna was born on September 8, 1921 in Wardner, BC, the youngest of four children born to Gustav and Elfrida Johansen. Edna was the last surviving child of her family. Edna was our loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. In her life she had a great love for the outdoors and spent many trips camping, fishing and just relaxing in the outdoors. She was also a knitter and crocheter. She had a pattern in her mind for a very unique hat. Mom did the craft until her hands would not allow her to anymore. Edna leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Joanne (Lou) Marchi and son Robin (Lynn) Ballard. Also left are her grandchildren; Laurel (Bruce) Marchi-Cole, Colin Marchi, Florence Ballard, Janna (Eddie) DeWitte, Keith (Ivy) Ballard and Christine (Jason) Fischer and her great grandchildren; Cassidy Marchi, Elena Marchi-Cole, Nole Dewitte, Owen DeWitte, Merek Dewitte, Farrah Fischer and Paige Fischer. Edna was predeceased by the love of her life, Lawrence; two sons Randy and Murray, her granddaughter, Cherie Ballard, her daughter-in-law Donna and her husband Leo Bozzer. There will be no service at mother’s request. At a later date, we will have a family graveside memorial in Kimberley. Memorial donations in memory of Edna will be gratefully accepted to a charity of your choice. Condolences may be left for the family at www.markmemorial.com. Go Wild! is a Wildsight Kimberley/Cranbrook initiative that has been taking Selkirk Secondary High School students on multi-day backcountry adventures. Last year the students were engaged in a 5 day hiking trip at Top of the World Provincial Park, with the video to prove it!
