The indoor field at the centre isn’t always in use, and its season could be extended to allow for skill development and to give outdoor fields a chance to regenerate longer, Rapp said.

About 14 schools in Whitehorse have fields, she said.

“Although there are about 1,300 registered soccer players, I’d say existing fields that are attached to schools could pretty much accommodate the majority of use,” she added.

She also shared the same concerns about the fencing around the complex and the impact that would have on the neighbourhood.

“We need to find a way to get community buy-in – having a sports complex that is fenced off with all the community looking in at a lovely green field they don’t have access to, it’s not the best way to go.”

NorthwesTel glitch reveals personal information A glitch on NorthwesTel’s website meant contact information for 25 costumers was searchable online.

Communications director Andrew Anderson said all 25 people, mostly from Whitehorse, had used an online form to order digital television some time since February 2015.

A coding error on the form meant that those people’s information could come up when you search the website.

No financial information was ever visible, Anderson said, only a person’s name and sometimes their email and phone number.

When the error was pointed out Monday, it was fixed in three hours and it won’t happen again, Anderson said.

The company is reaching out to the costumers to apologize.

“Obviously privacy is incredibly important to us as a company,” he said.

Leef champions federal budget’s thin surplus Jacqueline Ronson News Reporter

T

here’s something in this year’s federal budget for every Yukoner, says MP Ryan Leef.

Finance Minister Joe Olivier announced the budget Tuesday.

It projects that the government will eke out a $1.4 billion surplus.

The budget was delayed this year after plunging oil prices forced the Conservatives to rethink their plan. Normally the document would be delivered before April 1.

If achieved, this year will be the first surplus year since 2007.

“It’s great that we’ve achieved balance,” said Leef on the phone from Ottawa yesterday.

“It’s exactly what we committed to in 2011. It’s what I committed to when I was campaigning in 2011, that I would be a part of a government that would find balanced budgets, move toward that, and we did that.”

Few developed nations have achieved that since 2008’s global financial crisis, he said.

“I think it should be a source of pride for Canadians that we’ve continued to weather the global economic crisis and some continuing global economic uncertainty, and provide Canadians with controlled and responsible government spending and balanced budgets.”

see $923 million in total federal transfers to the Yukon.

“Previous Liberal governments that found balanced budgets did so on the backs of the provinces and territories, by cutting transfer payments, and that affected local governments’ ability to deliver health care, it affected local governments’ ability to deliver education programs, social services, and other local needs and priorities,” he said.

“It’s an embarrassment that they did that by affecting local governments.”

Yukoners will be pleased to hear that the federal government has committed to spend $150 million over four years on social housing, Leef said.

In all, Canada will spend $2.3 billion annually on housing investments that focus on a housing-first approach, he said.

“It’s clearly demonstrating that when we give people access

to affordable, available housing that they can then start to focus on the other things that will help provide help and opportunity for them.”

The budget also promises a reduction in the small business tax rate, from 11 to nine per cent.

“In the Yukon, I think most businesses would describe themselves as small business, and they’re really the economic engine of our territory.”

With that extra cash, business owners can invest in things like hiring, training or expanding, “to see that economic engine just rev right up,” said Leef.

He said he looks forward to meeting with Yukon groups about funding opportunities in this budget.

Critics have called this election-year budget good politics but bad policy. Canada has used a number of bookkeeping measures to make the numbers work, including selling assets, reducing reserve funds and borrowing from the employment insurance fund.

Leef dismissed the criticism.

“Canadian families and Canadian individuals will be the judge of whether or not they think it’s responsible for a government to provide a balanced budget while keeping taxes low and making sure the transfer payments to provinces and territories are still upheld.”

The tactics used by previous Liberal governments to achieve a surplus were far worse, he said.

“They slashed transfers to our territory, and that had an impact of the delivery of our health-care system and our education system. And we saw doctors and nurses vacating the territory, we saw teachers without work,” said Leef.

“We don’t need to look too far back in our history to see the time when they were celebrating balanced budgets while watching the Yukon suffer.”

Report presents fantasy scenarios for intensive natural gas development in northern Yukon Jacqueline Ronson News Reporter

N

orth Yukon’s natural gas resources would bring great economic benefits to the territory if they were developed, a recent report has found.

The study was completed by the Canadian Energy Research Institute, a non-profit group funded by government and industry.

It studied two hypothetical development scenarios, one where the Eagle Plain basin is developed for domestic consumption, and one were the Peel Plateau and Plain basin is also developed for domestic consumption and exports.

The domestic gas scenario would see $35 million in annual Yukon gross domestic product impact over 25 years, and 240 annual local jobs.

The export scenario would see $108 million in local GDP impact and 760 jobs in the ter-

ritory.

Both scenarios are highly speculative. As the report notes, the Yukon’s natural gas industry is in its infancy.

For one of these scenarios to become reality, a company or companies would have to secure leases to all of the available land in the basin, prove up the resource and then enter the environmental assessment and regulatory processes to get permits for production.

On top of that, a pipeline would have to be permitted and built to get the gas to an envisioned power plant and liquefied natural gas facility at Stewart Crossing, which would also have to be permitted and built.

All of this depends on industry interest in this development, which for the moment is limited.

The domestic scenario would see close to three-quarters of the Eagle Plain basin developed.

Currently Northern Cross Yukon is working to prove up resources in that basin, but its leases cover just a quarter of the basin, and its active exploration covers just a small fraction of that.

The export scenario counts on not only the development of the Eagle Plain basin, but also the Peel Plateau and Plain.

That basin is located in the Peel watershed, which the government has put off-limits to mineral staking and oil and gas leases while a court battle over its future continues.

The report’s export gas scenario envisions a pipeline from the middle of the Peel watershed to Eagle Plain, continuing on all the way through an imagined LNG facility in Haines, Alaska.

Both scenarios also count on the proposed Casino mine to eat up a big chunk of the produced natural gas.

The gas would be piped from northern Yukon to a hub at

Stewart Crossing. At that point, some would be burned in a power plant to feed Yukon’s grid, some would be liquefied and trucked to off-grid mines and communities, and some would continue down a 125-kilometre pipeline, across the Yukon River to the Casino mine property.

The Casino mine, currently in the environmental assessment phase, expects to build a 150-megawatt natural gas power plant to fuel its operations, using imported LNG. That’s as much as Yukon Energy’s current hydro and diesel capacity combined.

The natural gas study notes significant risks that would affect both the domestic and export scenarios.

For the domestic scenario, any excess surplus gas beyond local demand would have nowhere to go. The gas from Eagle Plain would more than double the territory’s current hydro capacity.

In the export scenario, gas prices would be at the whim of international markets. Currently those prices are very low, thanks to a glut of shale gas production in B.C., Alberta and the United States.

Still, the report suggests developing Yukon’s natural gas industry could be preferable to investing in new large-scale hydro, as the Yukon government has already committed to do.

“Eagle Plain gas could well serve the Yukon’s needs as the territory grows since it is cheaper to develop than new large-scale hydro, is less (greenhouse gas-)intensive than diesel, and more reliable than intermittent wind.”

The Yukon government expects to use this report as a template for its promised study of the potential economic benefits of shale gas development in the Liard Basin through hydraulic fracturing.

For now, the legislative assembly’s prayer tradition is here to stay, he said.

“The standing orders – the rules – still call on the speaker to do a prayer every day. I mean, who knows what will happen in the long run, but as for right now there’s no consideration here about changing anything with regard to the prayer.”

Challenge lands Education Department’s contract to find work for disabled residents Ashley Joannou News Reporter

T

he Yukon government has found an experienced nonprofit group to take over the task of helping people with disabilities find work.

Challenge Disability Resource Group was recently awarded the contract by the Yukon Department of Education.

The department issued the tender earlier this year after it denied funding to the Yukon Council of Disabilities, saying that the group couldn’t meet the requirements to get the money.

Without that money the council was forced to close.

In an interview yesterday, Education Minister Doug Graham said the details of the new deal are still being negotiated.

The two sides also haven’t agreed on exactly how much it’s going to cost.

“They’ll be doing case-management services, they’ll be doing referrals to labour market programming, all for persons with disabilities,” Graham said.

Case managers will work with people to identify challenges to entering the workforce, organize aptitude testing, identify other training someone could take, and figure out what an employer would have to do in terms of accommodations.

Case managers will help clients by identifying obstacles to getting a job, lining up aptitude testing and training, and figuring out what accommodations an employer would offer.

Everything should be up and running by July. In the meantime, case management is being pro-

When news broke in February that the organization was closing, Graham said the group was unable to demonstrate it was operating efficiently.

Yesterday, Graham said he believes Challenge has a clear understanding of what is expected of them.

On top of that, they already have the administrative support in place, he said. That wasn’t the case for everyone who applied for the job.

“They have the bookkeepers already, they have the administrators that are necessary to move this process forward,” he said, “and with other non-government NGOs, many of them had to ramp up their own organization in order to handle it. We’re pretty happy with Challenge actually because they won’t have to do that.”

Since 1976, Challenge has offered various on-the-job training programs. These currently include running the cafe inside the Yukon legislature, operating a woodshop and offering landscaping and greenhouse training.

Graham said this new contract is aimed at people who are not already working with Challenge.

he Department of Highways and Public Works plans to have the crumbling, unsafe Ross River School back up and running in time for the next school year.

The department has issued a request for qualifications looking for someone to fix all the structural problems that led to the school being closed in January.

The deadline for the request for qualifications was Friday. Once a shortlist is created companies will be asked to submit a bid for the work.

The plan is for the school to be habitable again by Aug. 1, according to the documents.

Students have been banned from the building since mid-January when an engineering report found that the shifting and cracking building was unsafe.

Melting permafrost under the school, which was built in 2000, is a major cause of the problem. An engineering report indicated this is due to the warmth of the school’s heated crawl space.

The repairs the department has commissioned won’t deal with that.

But a separate geotechnical study is being done to look at the underlying issues.

That report will be finalized sometime over the summer, the department says. Then a different contract will be issued to fix any problems it finds.

There is no dollar amount linked to the structural repairs – that’s something the department won’t make public until after the winning bid is chosen.

The request for qualifications does provide some insight into exactly how much work needs to be done.

Companies are being asked to repair 14 concrete pillars under the school’s crawl space and inspect all the beams.

The building needs to be re-leveled and all the internal finishes repaired. The framing over the library also needs to be fixed.

Meanwhile, a separate company is looking at the system that is supposed to limit permafrost melting.

The school will now be inspected twice a year, as opposed to once.

They’ll fix things every year as required, she said.

The department says there’s no problem getting the structural issues repaired before the geotechnical report is done. “It’s a completely appropriate approach. We need to get the building structural work done so that the building can be occupied again, and at the same time investigating the geotechnical aspects because it is a more long-term project,� Debreceni said.

The school’s foundation is supposed to be kept cool in part with the help of a gadget called a thermosyphon, which draws heat away from the building foundation and surrounding soil. Early indications are that this system is working, and “we just need to be monitoring and adjusting,� Debreceni said.

Procon Mining & Tunnelling Ltd., the mine’s primary contractor, has urged the court to force the company to liquidate quickly, arguing that continued maintenance of the property will diminish eventual returns to creditors.

That company asserts it is owed $7 million by the company, although Yukon Zinc says the real figure is about half that.

Yukon Zinc sued Procon in October over a $18 million lien that it says was “intentionally and egregiously inflated.� Yukon Zinc alleged defamation, conspiracy and possible racism.

That matter is ongoing.

Procon is also at odds with Transamine Trading LLC, a customer of Yukon Zinc’s concentrates that paid $7.7 million towards future deliveries that have yet to materialize.

Yukon Zinc agreed Transamine could collect concentrates being stored both at the Wolverine mine and at a shipping terminal in Stewart, B.C. However, Procon has challenged that arrangement, arguing that its lien covers the property

in question.

The Wolverine mine has not turned a profit since production began in March 2012. Over the subsequent three-year period, losses have totalled $196 million.

Commodity prices for Yukon Zinc’s product are low, and expected to remain low in the short term, according to the most recent court monitor’s report.

If the mine ever does return to operation, the company will soon after be required to install a water treatment facility at an estimated cost of $10 million.

It remains to be seen whether Yukon Zinc’s parent company believes these costs merit the benefits of holding onto the property.

Yukon Zinc’s CEO met with representatives of the JDC Group in China late last month. “JDC Group continues to be supportive of a restructuring, but at this time, is not prepared to extend any further financial commitments until it better understands the restructuring options,� according to the monitor’s report.

Crawl spaces would normally have temperatures that are the same as the outside air. “High temperatures in the crawl space are considered to be the major cause of the permafrost degradation under the building,� the report says.

A second report, completed by Williams Engineering, also makes reference to the crawl space. It recommends the temperature be lowered.

Debreceni said it takes time for melting permafrost to cause damage. “By modifying temperatures in the crawl space, it doesn’t have an immediate effect on the ground or the permafrost. It actually takes quite a period of time for those types of changes to be noticed or to take an effect.�

Since the school closed, students in Ross River have taken classes in makeshift classrooms around town, including two mobile classrooms borrowed from Yukon College.

For instance, miners and environmentalists are not going to be able to sit down at a table together and hammer out a mutually acceptable solution to the question of the Peel.

Politics is ultimately about who exercises power, and we differ greatly on how we want to see that power exercised.

Partisanship is the necessary consequence of our disagreements. We affiliate with people who share our values and our interests to form a common front against those who do not.

Even in allegedly “non-partisan” political institutions (i.e. city councils, student unions, etc.), parties often emerge organically in the form of slates and informal coalitions.

The fact that we tend to act like children in the process is an unfortunate side-effect, but pretending that our differences don’t exist is not the solution.

Attack politics get a bad rap in no small part because it is practised so disingenuously. But ultimately we have to depend on opposing organized political parties to expose the faults of the others. We certainly can’t count

on politicians to highlight their own various shortcomings in their glossy campaign materials to allow voters to weigh their pros and cons. It is the others that allows us to see those faults.

“Consensus government” as it is practice in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut is a rhetorically pleasing misnomer.

Neither legislature truly functions on the basis of “consensus” as we typically understand it – a broad agreement or something more than majority.

And the system is not without its critics. Those territories may not have political parties but as a consequence their leaders lack any sort of direct democratic mandate and are difficult to hold accountable. The solution to remove a particular political party from power in the Yukon is to vote them out in the next election. Voters in the other territories don’t have that ability and have no way of knowing who their next premier will be.

The idea of a “non-partisan” party, when it was proposed, was a far greater absurdity. What proponents were essentially asking us voters to do was to select an MLA based solely on his or her purported “non-partisanship.”

We wouldn’t be voting for some-

one based on his or her views on development, conservation, taxes, or spending but rather on some guarantee that they will be “nonpartisan.” I, for one, am not about to waste my one small opportunity to influence policy on such an unknown quality.

The ideological spectrum in the Yukon may be narrower than it is elsewhere in Canada due to the fact that we are a major recipient of federal transfers. We are not forced to make the tough ideological decisions that other jurisdictions are forced to make.

But at the end of the day we are still too different to be lumped together under one “big tent.”

Even the biggest of big tents has an occupancy limit and can only stand so much difference without tearing at its seams.

While we should always strive to act like adults and put in power those who can behave in a civil manner, accepting some of the nastiness of partisanship is probably the cost of living in a functioning democracy. Problematic alternatives like “non-partisan” parties and consensus government are not the answer.

took a nosedive, and the resulting 2015-16 budget was late arriving and barely afloat.

Total program expenses this year are budgeted at $263.2 billion, up from $254.6 billion in 2014-15, while revenues are forecast at $290.4 billion in 2015-16, an increase of $11 billion over last year. Public debt charges are projected to fall by a billion dollars to $25.7 billion.

Marginal surpluses are projected for the next five years, topping out at $4.8 billion in 2019-20.

“If you want to come to the most important reason that we’re in a budgetary surplus today it’s that we’ve restrained public expenses,” Oliver said at a news conference, pointing to five years of government austerity.

However, to keep afloat in 2015, the Conservatives also threw overboard the usual $3-billion contingency reserve, cutting the cushion to $1 billion for the next three years at a time when global economic turbulence makes prudent assumptions all the more advisable.

They sold off a stake in General Motors – bought to prop up the auto industry in 2009 – for a net gain of $2.1 billion. They’ve booked $900 million in savings from civil service negotiations that have yet to take place, while offloading $1.6 billion in spending on veterans benefits into the previous fiscal year – effectively killing the 2014-15 surplus in order to preserve one for this election year.

“There’s a lot of things booked in here that are not based on economic fundamentals,” said Randall Bartlett, the senior economist at TD Economics.

“I wouldn’t necessarily call it the healthiest balance. Is it on the strength of the economy and the strength of revenues? It’s not.”

The bar is tiny. But touches like exposed logs and church pews refurbished as benches give it lots of character.

Moving a staircase that used to run through the middle has helped create more usable space, but even with an addition on the back to add main floor bathrooms, the place is only about 800 square feet.

That puts capacity at 35 people, including staff.

As soon as the ground is soft enough, plans are to build a deck out the back, which should increase their capacity by 15.

Still, both Maltby and Hardy have no plans to leave their day jobs.

Maltby works in computer programming and Hardy owns a construction company.

Right now the bar is only open three days a week: Thursday, Friday and Saturday. This is much more of a passion project for both of them.

“It was really important for me to come back and have something like this. I needed another creative outlet,” said Maltby, who grew up in Whitehorse and returned from a job in Calgary to open the bar.

For him, that creativity comes in mixing and creating drinks.

About two years ago, Maltby downloaded a cocktails app on his iPad. The program offered more than just a list of recipes, it included video tutorials from established bartenders walking you through exactly how things should be done.

For years before that the passion also took over his travel plans.

Everywhere he went, in the U.S. or Europe, Maltby would track down niche cocktail bars to learn from the drinks there.

The key to a good cocktail is the balance, he said.

“When I started traveling and trying these drinks in different places, it was the balance. You don’t have one thing overpowering the other. These are cocktails that are meant to be sipped. They’re complex.”

The bar’s drink menu also includes wine, beers and scotch. The plan is to include beer on tap from Winterlong Brewery once the new Yukon microbrewery is up and running, he said.

As far as food goes, the bar is sticking to tapas-style dishes thanks to their small kitchen.

The menu last week offered smokies, brownies and cream puffs.

The bar’s name is an homage to that extra layer of fat some Yukoners build up over the winter to keep

warm.

It started out as a joke between the two friends when Hardy came to visit Maltby in Vancouver one winter looking a little “plump,” Maltby said, as if he had a blanket around his middle.

“He said, ‘Yeah well, you need a blanket for chopping wood.’ They had a wood stove at the time,” he said.

When renovations began in June of last year, Maltby immediately started getting questions about the fate of the two moose on the cabin.

Not to worry, he said, they’re not going anywhere.

“We were never going to do anything with the moose. They were never at risk.”

Maltby said he’s been told those moose make the cabin the secondmost photographed building in Whitehorse next to the Log Skyscraper.

People often come by to snap a shot, he said.

From what he’s been able to gather, the building was originally a family home built in 1930.

It used to be on Fourth Avenue near Strickland Street before 1979, when it was moved to its current location.

You can still see steel straps on the inside that are likely from that move.

Shortly after the move is when the moose arrived and the place became a taxidermy business.

Maltby said he sees the bar developing over time.

“In a year, I don’t know. We spent so much time just getting it to this point. This thing is just going to evolve organically into this really interesting space.”

Ask adult children to lend a hand with cleanup

MANNERS DEAR MISS MANNERS: We are the 80 – and 85-year-old parents of adult children who visit from out of state. I no longer want to provide maid services for them.

Is it inhospitable to ask them to leave the guest bedroom and bathroom/shower as clean as they found it when they arrived? I placed a pail and cleaning products in their bath cabinet.

When we visit friends’ homes, I roll up the bed linen and bring used towels to our host’s laundry, and clean the toilet and bathroom. What guidelines are acceptable to request of our family?

GENTLE READER: Guessing that your children are at least over 40, Miss Manners thinks you may be a bit late in bringing them up to be good guests.

However, you may still ask them to pick up after themselves when they visit. Scrubbing the bathroom is not the usual guest duty, but it is your house and your children, and surely, they would like to spare you the labor. Hints are not working, and it would be a gratuitous insult to the entire family to suggest that they were badly brought up. Just phrase it as a favor to you.

DEAR MISS MANNERS: As

I was coming down the stairwell of my apartment building on my way to work this morning, I was confronted with a neighbor’s dog who “energetically” jumped up on me (twice).

I was startled, to say the least, and really glad I had decided against pantyhose and opted for trousers instead, because he surely would have run them.

The dog’s owner was not far behind – the dog was on one of those stretch leashes – and witnessed the whole event. To my dismay, rather than offering an apology (e.g., “Gee, I’m sorry my dog jumped up on you”), she defiantly exclaimed, “He’s not dangerous or anything – he’s not going to hurt you.”

No doubt she adores her pooch and, in her 20-something mindset, could not fathom that another human being would be anything but

flattered by its presence, even if it jumped up on you.

My response to her was, “I’m sure he’s the nicest dog in the world – he just likes to jump up on people.”

But what I wished I had said instead was, “This is the part where you say that you’re sorry your dog jumped up on me.” Wish I had thought of that in real time, but like I said, I was understandably startled.

GENTLE READER: No. This is when you should express to the owner your hope that her lovely pooch does not get injured jumping up on people he does not know.

Miss Manners does not allow you to conduct obedience school for dog owners, however much they need it.

DEAR MISS MANNERS: My cousin got married not quite two years ago. The ceremony and reception were lovely, and I was consider-

ing using the same beautiful church for my own wedding, which I am just beginning to plan.

However, since my cousin’s marriage was short-lived, I am not sure whether using the same church would be disrespectful and distasteful. There are other wonderful churches nearby, but this one also has an enchanting environment, near a lake. What would be the proper thing to do?

GENTLE READER: The last Miss Manners checked, churches were exempt from curses. But then, the last she checked, bridal couples were supposed to choose their wedding churches on the basis of something deeper than scenery.

No, wait. The last she really heard was that churches were actually being regarded as stage sets. In that case, surely more than one show can be put on there.

Young writers shipped off to boot camp Myles Dolphin News Reporter

F

ew of the 48 students taking part in this year’s Young Authors’ Conference will become professional writers, and that’s perfectly alright, according to local playwright Patti Flather.

“It’s just a joy to be with other people who have a love of reading and writing,” she said.

“When people have a shared passion it’s wonderful, regardless of the age. It’s important to share that love with young people and celebrate what they’re trying to do.”

Flather is one of four guest authors invited to lead writing workshops over a two-day period at F.H. Collins this week. The others are poet Jacob Scheier, novelist and actor Chris Humphreys and local musician Graeme Peters.

It’s a boot camp for aspiring writers, an opportunity for likeminded students from Grade 8 to 12 to meet each other and work alongside professionals.

Now in its 35th year, the conference is part of the Yukon Writers’ Festival, a week-long event that kicked off on Monday with a reading by author Susan Musgrave in Carmacks.

Although participation in the conference is voluntary, not everyone gets to attend.

Students are selected based on the quality of a writing sample they submit to their school’s selection committee.

Groups set up in different parts of the high school and buckle down for writing exercises all day on Thursday and Friday.

Flather is taking part in the conference for a second time. The co-artistic director of Gwaandak Theatre also ran workshops back in 2000, shortly after finishing her master of fine arts in creative writing at UBC. In that time she’s also taught dramatic and creative writing at Yukon College, written a short film and had her fiction published in several literary magazines.

Flather’s focus is on giving students individual feedback and also doing some playwriting exercises, although there aren’t any playwrights in her group.

“I think it’s a great chance to try a little bit of a different genre,” she said.

“Whenever I’m doing a new piece I’m always experimenting to see whether it’ll become a play, or a short story, or a film.

Short stories need dialogue too so there’s a lot of crossover between the various genres.”

Based on the manuscripts she’s already seen, there’s a lot of young talent out there, she said.

And while someone can be talented, it’s also about putting in the effort and getting feedback

He started it so the territory could take part in the Canada-

wide National Writers’ Festival, which began in 1979.

It had 33 students from five Yukon schools working with three visiting authors: Susan Musgrave, John Lazarus and David McFadden.

Musgrave will be at the Watson Lake library for a reading tomor-

row evening at 7 p.m., and will visit the Teslin school library on Friday at 1 p.m.

Both events are free.

A reading and reception for the festival, featuring all five guest authors, is scheduled tonight at the Old Fire Hall for 7 p.m.

The CBC said in a tweet that the show’s logo would use a small “q”, but for “clarity and readability,” the program would otherwise be referred to with an uppercase “Q” in written communication.

But late Monday, the CBC scrapped that plan and said it would be sticking with “q” after all.

A

t 57, Whitehorse’s Kevin Murphy is the oldest competitor in the gymnasium.

He has a shock of white hair and walks with a noticeable limp between points.

While maybe not as quick on his feet as he once was, he still has fast hands and knows how to hit the ball.

Murphy captured his 20th men’s singles title at the Yukon Open Table Tennis Championships on Sunday at Whitehorse Elementary School.

“I was just worried about playing the best I can and suddenly the win became a possibility after I won the third game,” said Murphy. “All of sudden it seemed like a tale of two different matches out there.

“Even going into the fifth game I thought Ryan (Bachli) would come storming back, but the pattern remained the same and I escaped – I won.”

Murphy pulled off a massive comeback to beat Bachli – the defending champ – by a score of 7-11, 2-11, 1412, 11-7, 11-5 in the final.

Bachli, who was going for his fourth men’s singles title, had match point at 12-11 in the third before Murphy won three straight points to take the game. Taking the third game made Murphy feel “five years younger,” he said.

“One of things I tried to do was put a little more side spin on the service ball going into Ryan, take a little off his racquet strength. In other words, he’d have to account a little more for the side spin and it would put him a little more on the defensive and make some mistakes out of it.

“I just kept on doing it – it kept on feeling right – and it started producing results.”

“I had a lot of energy the first two games and then it just fell,” said Bachli.

“I’m kind of shocked because Grace-Anne is my match,” said Armstrong, 16, who was playing in her first Yukon championship. “It’s a tough competition playing Grace-Anne and I’m kind of shocked that I beat her – it’s like taking the next step in table tennis. I’m happy about that.”

After placing second last year, Arcel Siosan came out on top on Sunday in junior men’s singles. The 14-year-old went undefeated in four round robin matches to win his first Yukon title.

Thomas Brenner placed second with one loss and Greg Murdoch claimed third with two losses.

“I feel amazing,” said Siosan. “The other players are really strong so I wasn’t expecting to be the number one. I’m pretty happy with the result.”

Janssen and Mingmin Yao won the women’s doubles title with a 11-9, 11-13, 7-11, 11-7, 11-5 over Harris and Ming Huang.

So he certainly didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t expect to go home with a title. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I had no idea there was even badminton up here,â&#x20AC;? said Guss. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m happy there was, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s for sure.â&#x20AC;?

The 28-year-old took the open menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s singles title at the Yukon Badminton Championships on Saturday at Porter Creek Secondary.

He clinched it with a 21-19, 2116 win over defending champ Jon Pan of Whitehorse. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t received a medal for badminton for maybe a decade,â&#x20AC;? said the former Kelowna junior champ. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was up to a national player as a junior, and then provincials and lots of open tournaments.â&#x20AC;?

While Guss claimed the prestigious open singles title, a junior notched a triple-gold win over the weekend.

Ritik Sharma topped three divisions at the tournament, including the U14 boys singles title with a two-set win over runner-up Bryce Anderson in the final. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ritik has been part of the badminton team for a few years now and his development year after year has grown very positively,â&#x20AC;? said Peter Toth, organizer and coach for the Yukon Youth Badminton Team. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s definitely a candidate for somebody who is going to take the sport serious and move up, and provide a challenge, not only here in the Yukon but I think he could be a strong on the western coast.â&#x20AC;?

Sharma also took gold in the youth doubles with younger brother Rohit Sharma and gold in the U16 boys doubles with older brother Mannie Sharma, who pulled off a triple-gold win at last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s championship. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a strong family history there and strong family support for the sport, so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not surprising,â&#x20AC;? said Toth.

Ritik wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the only player, however, with more than one gold by the end of the championships.

Kataya Ulrich teamed up with Mia Greenough for gold in the U16 girls doubles and with Toth for gold in the open mixed doubles. Ulrich also took silver in U16 girls singles with a loss to Abigail Cuenza in the final.

Cycling clubs gearing up for busy road season Tom Patrick News Reporter

Kon Echelon and VeloNorth Cycling Club are ready to hit the road.

Together the two Whitehorse cycling clubs have an extremely busy season lined up for local cyclists, including group rides, races and tour events inside and outside the territory.

Having hosted only a few races last season, VeloNorth is hoping to get back on the cycling community’s radar this summer.

“We’re trying to re-establish a presence,” said incoming club president Mike McCann. “We’ve kept this schedule fairly simple to start building at the volunteer base again and to put on some consistent events that people can come out to. We’ll just see where it goes from there.”

VeloNorth has six events, including the Tour de Whitehorse, on its calendar beginning with the Carcross Cutoff Time Trial on April 29.

To make its events more appealing to cyclists, the club is not charging a membership fee this season, though there might be an entry fee for the Tour de Whitehorse, a three-day stage race.

“We’re trying to attract people and make it easy,” said McCann.

“VeloNorth has some money in the bank, so we decided this year we won’t charge a membership fee. You still have to fill out a membership form and you need to get insurance from the Cycling Association (of the Yukon). But in terms of joining us, you just have to fill out the form.”

“We’re still taking a look at the Tour de Whitehorse, but any charge for that event would simply be on a cost-recovery basis,” he added.

As for getting insurance through the Cycling Association of the Yukon: “They have it online and they’ve done a very good job with that,” said McCann. “They have a link on the website and people just have to follow the link … It’s really, really simple.”

With VeloNorth at the helm, the Tour de Whitehorse will once again be home for the Yukon Road Championships, which were instead hosted separately by U Kon Echelon last summer. This

Expert men riders race in the first stage of the Tour de Skagway last year outside Fraser, B.C. Whitehorse’s two road cycling clubs have lots in store for local cyclists this season.

year’s Tour, to be held July 17-19, will feature a prologue, followed by a time trial (the Yukon Time Trial Championships) and a road race (The Yukon Road championships).

VeloNorth has also added a team time trial to its calendar to help prepare cyclists for the Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay from Haines Junction to Haines, Alaska.

A week before the relay on June 14, VeloNorth will host the Icycle Sport Team Time Trial from Jake’s Corner in Tagish to the South Access on the Alaska Highway.

“So get your relay team – the folks you’ll be riding with in the Haines-to-Haines – and come out for this event the week before,” said McCann. “It’ll be good practice riding in a pace line.

There’ll be no drafting between teams, so they’ll be individual starts, and the team goes off and rides together as a team and finishes as a team.”

U Kon Echelon, founded by Trena Irving in 2012, will hold some favourites from last season and some new events as well.

The club is set to host a second annual 88-kilometre Haines Junction 88 Race and a second annual Tour de Skagway, a three-day stage-race, in May. It’s also planning to host a series of criterium races throughout the season.

“One of our members is on the cycling association board –

Marc Lapointe – and he’s going to organize a criterium series,” said Irving. “So we’re going to have one every second week, but I’m still working that out with the City of Whitehorse.”

U Kon Echelon is also holding weekly group rides, including mountain bike rides beginning in May, that are open to the public.

“I’m gearing kids up to race at (Western Canada Summer Games) and they have to race both disciplines,” said Irving.

Irving plans to bring teams to the B.C. Junior Provincials in May, the Tour de Fairbanks in June as well as some training camps down south.

The club is also hosting a cycling camp for road and mountain biking in July with Houshang Amiri, the head coach of the Pacific Cycling Centre, in Haines Junction. The camp will end with the Tour de Haines Junction stage race – a new addition to the calendar.

U Kon will cap the season with a series of six mountain bike races in September and October.

Whitehorse team wins in futsal tourney Tom Patrick News Reporter

A

Whitehorse boys soccer team excelled in the high-pace, high-pressure game of futsal and came away with gold over the weekend.

Whitehorse 2 – a 2001 squad – downed a Juneau team to take gold in the Whitehorse Futsula Tournament on Sunday at Vanier Catholic Secondary School.

“I’ve played it before,” said Whitehorse 2’s Ewan Halliday.

“It’s a lot faster than regular soccer. It’s a game that can change quite quickly.”

Futsal (or futsula) is a form of soccer played on a small field – mainly indoors – with five-player teams. Unlike other indoor soccer, the field is surrounded by out-of-bounds areas, with no passing off walls.

The four-second rule is king in futsal. Kick-ins, corner kicks and goalie balls all have to be put back in play within four seconds, making it very high paced.

“It’s more technical and it’s fast,” said organizer Victor Lavanderos. “It’s the first time we’ve played a futsal tournament. I’m impressed by the games, there were some pretty fast games.

“We’re getting close to the other cities: Montreal, Vancouver, Toronto. They already started futsal two years ago. We’re trying to keep up with them.”

Whitehorse 2 grabbed the title in the 14-and-under tourney with a 4-1 win over Juneau in the final.

The home team drew first blood, with Halliday scoring two minutes in with a corner kick.

Teammate Felix Maltais then added one late in the first half and early in the second to make it 3-0. Whitehorse’s Dawson Weir put in the fourth late in the match to make it 4-1.

“It was my first tournament with (the Yukon) Strikers and I’m pretty happy that we were able to win,” said Whitehorse goalkeeper Aaron Rich. “I think I played well in goal and we came out with the win.”

“In futsal there’s always a lot of pressure because the ball can go from one end of the field to the other in a matter of seconds and they can have a goal from their half all the way over here.”

A total of 11 teams – five from Whitehorse and six from Juneau – took part in the event.

Whitehorse’s female squads didn’t fare as well in their side of the tournament. Juneau’s three female teams placed in the top three spots following the round robin and two played in the final.

Juneau 1 defeated Juneau 2 by a score of 4-2 for the girls title.

“We have a strong relationship with Whitehorse teams,” said Juneau 1 coach Chris Barrows.

ierre Camille Robitaille was born in Laval, Quebec to Gaston and Gilberte Robitaille.

Pierre was a long-time Yukonner who hung his hat in Dawson, Teslin and most recently Whitehorse. He loved ďŹ shing, hunting and travelling. He spent years cat-skinning in the placer ďŹ elds in Dawson, then building roads for exploration companies, most recently the road to Tuk.

His travels took him to India in his early days, then Egypt, Africa, Mexico and southern states with his ďŹ rst wife Cherry Flannigan and her children Joaquin and Sarah. When Cherry passed away, fate brought him to Thailandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s beautiful Pattharaporn. Pierre married Pat and she, along with her children Ben and Ice immigrated to Canada.
