It was a warm sunny evening – the kind of perfect spring night when people like to be outdoors.

Last Thursday, in the vicinity of MEI (Mennonite Educational Institute), kids’ soccer teams were playing, the tennis courts were occupied, people were walking their

dogs and a school production of Mary Poppins was going on at the middle school.

At about 7:30 p.m., this tranquil setting was disrupted by the sound of gunshots near MEI in the area of Clearbrook and Downes roads.

One of the witnesses, who was playing tennis at the time, at first thought some kids were filming a movie.

He looked up to see two vehicles – a

dark-coloured sedan and a white pickup truck – stopped on Clearbrook Road in front of the gates leading into the MEI tennis court.

The man saw a masked passenger step out of the truck and fire several rounds from a handgun towards the back of the sedan.

The witness, who did not want his name published, said the sedan then sped off and

140 city staff made 100K-plus in 2014 Report cites two per cent payroll increase over previous year

The number of city staffers earning more than $100,000 hit 140 in 2014 – up almost 23 per cent from 114 six-figure earners in 2013. More than half of those were firefighters.

According to the city’s draft financial statements presented at a committee of the whole meeting on Monday, 234 staff earned more than $75,000 – compared to 231 in 2013 and 222 in 2012.

In accordance with the Financial Information Act, the city must report all elected officials’ salaries and all employees making more than $75,000. The act excludes police departments.

Of the 140 people who made more than $100,000, 74 were firefighters, or almost 53 per cent. In 2013, 58 firefighters made more than $100,000.

City manager George Murray said that some of the firefighters received retroactive pay after their union contracts were settled, which would bump some up to

a higher remuneration rate for that year.

The staff report states that total remuneration for city staff rose by $1 million.

The city’s total payroll, including those who make less than $75,000, was $48.8 million in 2014 (not including expenses).

In 2013, it was $47.8 million.

That is a two per cent increase from 2013. The report says almost half of the increase comes from the inclusion pay to auxiliary firefighters, which was not reported in prior years.

The staff report also indicates overtime costs were a large contributor to the increase in personnel earning more than $75,000. Without overtime, there would be 31 fewer people on the list.

The city’s highest earner in 2014 was once again Murray, at $249,245. He was followed by deputy city manager Jake Rudolph at $224,915.

Airport manager Mike Pastro received $184,962 in remuneration in 2014, up 1.8 per cent from 2013, when he earned $181,621. It was announced that Pastro will retire this month.

Former mayor Bruce Banman was paid $95,333 in 2014.

Councillor earnings vary depending on expenses and indemnity paid for attending water and sewer commissions, and for acting as mayor. Henry Braun was a councillor until November, when he was elected mayor. He received $40,442 for the year.

Couns. Moe Gill and Dave Loewen, who both served as councillors through the entire year, each received about $41,000.

The city has more than 800 employees and a total budget of about $220 million, with an operating budget of roughly $170 million and a capital budget of $40 million.

Most area residents happy with life, survey says

Many people in Abbotsford-Mission are very happy with their lives – while a significant percentage are quite the opposite.

According to a new Statistics Canada report released this week, two-thirds of residents rated their “life satisfaction� as an eight, nine or 10 in surveys conducted between 2009 and 2013, according to the government statistics agency.

Adjusted for individual characteristics like employment, income, age and sex, Abbotsford-Mission had the highest proportion of extremely satisfied residents of any census metropolitan area (CMA) west of Thunder Bay, with four in 10 ranking their lives a nine or a 10.

Despite those happy campers, the area’s average score of 7.9 ranked in the bot-

tom third of CMAs, in large part because Abbotsford-Mission had one of the country’s highest proportion of dissatisfied residents.

Around 17 per cent of survey respondents rated their satisfaction no higher than a six, a figure that was among the highest in the country. When demographics were accounted for, though, the number improved significantly. The authors of the report, called How’s Life in the City, note that men, immigrants and middleage respondents all tend to rate their life satisfaction lower on surveys. Married residents also report themselves to be happier than those who are divorced, separated, widowed or never married.

least an eight out of 10, and small variance between the happiest and unhappiest cities.

The nation’s biggest cities lagged smaller population centres in the report.

Vancouver had the country’s worst proportion of very satisfied residents, with barely one in three assigning their life a nine or 10. Coming in second-worst was Toronto. Both had average scores of 7.8.

The authors write that the results “appear to suggest that life satisfaction is higher in smaller communities, as most of the CMAs at the top of the rankings have populations under 250,000.�

The survey aggregates a series of surveys conducted between 2009 and 2013.

In Abbotsford-Mission, between 1,800 and 2,000 people were surveyed, with more queried in larger cities.

Abbotsford residents’ top priorities are parks and the environment, jobs, and transportation and infrastructure, according to survey conducted as part of the city’s official community plan (OCP) update.

Over 2,300 residents responded to an online survey as part of stage two of community engagement for Abbotsforward – a plan that will outline how the city develops in the future.

The preliminary results show there was a threeway tie for top priority, followed by housing in fourth place. City staff will use residents’ comments to develop a set of ideas that connect the background research observations to the community engagement input. This will be included in a report that will be presented to council in May.

Officer gets conditional In Concert

An Abbotsford police officer apologized in court Monday morning after pleading guilty to two fraud charges, saying he let down his family, friends and the Abbotsford Police Department (APD). “It should never have happened, and I accept full responsibility,� said Ravinder (Rob) Thandi as he choked back tears in Abbotsford provincial court.

Judge Gregory Brown handed Thandi, a 21-year veteran of the APD, a conditional discharge and one year of probation.

The sentence means Thandi, 46, will not have a criminal record if he follows the conditions of his probation over the next 12 months. These include that he complete 75 hours of community service, as well as pay back $2,500 in health benefits fraudulently claimed for his then-girlfriend and her son.

Thandi’s lawyer stated in court that his client has already reimbursed $1,512 to Pacific Blue Cross and $1,014 to the provincial medical services plan.

The court was told the fraud

stemmed from a relationship that Thandi, who is divorced with three children, began in 2011.

Defence lawyer David Silverman said Thandi wanted the woman and her son to move in with him, but his mom, who lived with him, was opposed to such an arrangement.

Instead, Thandi planned to build a new house, with a separate suite for his mom.

But when Thandi added the woman and her child to his extended health benefits in April 2013, he indicated on the records that he and the woman had been living together since November 2011.

Silverman said the pair were in a serious relationship and, in Thandi’s mind, that amounted to a common-law partnership, although he knew he was lying when he indicated they were living together.

His motives were to help out his girlfriend and son, and did not involve personal gain, Silverman said.

The woman began a new relationship in April 2014, and Thandi requested she be removed from his benefits.

The woman then told police

that she and Thandi had not lived together, and an investigation was launched.

Loucks said Thandi immediately admitted to police the circumstances of the fraud and cooperated with the investigation.

About 35 letters supporting Thandi were presented to the judge. “All of them speak to a man who is very dedicated to his family, who is very conscientious in his job ‌ They all amount very much to a person who is otherwise a very honest person who made a very silly mistake,â€?

Silverman said.

Thandi apologized in court, saying he had allowed his judgment to get clouded, but he had learned from his mistake and hoped to become a better person.

Speaking outside the courthouse, Thandi said he believed the judge’s ruling was fair, and he hopes to be able to return to policing in the future.

Thandi remains under suspension without pay and the decision on whether he can return as a police officer will now be determined by the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner.

B.C.’s ‘happy meter’ needs turning up Mark

Other Hand There reposes on a shelf in my house a large box-like ornament, on its side inscribed in faux antique lettering, “If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands.”

Seems, according to Stats Canada, there isn’t much clapping going on in British Columbia, and apparently none at all in Vancouver, despite an international acknowledgement as the world’s most livable city.

Over four years between 2009 and 2013 Stats Canada surveyed approximately 340,000 people in 33 cities across the nation, asking them to rate their happiness of where they lived. Vancouver was at the bottom of the list!

Apparently, respondents found it hard to meet people, and friendliness isn’t one of

the bounties of living in an ideal climate, with scenery that’s hard to beat.

Considering virtually everyone is focused on their smartphones, or minds are filled via earbuds with solitary music, who can be surprised that it’s difficult to meet or begin conversations? It is the “selfie” generation – one that appears to have no bounds of age. Far simpler, I’m thinking, to text or tweet or whatever else one does on their portable computers ostensibly disguised as phones than look up, smile and say Hi. On the other hand, Abbotsford residents, despite living in a city known for its high unemployment rate, rank well above Vancouverites on their ‘happy meters.’

Our fair burg settled in at number 24, one place less happy than those living in ‘Winterpeg.’

Perhaps, rather than bemoaning their lack of happiness, people should try singing the child’s song mentioned in the intro. I know from witnessing the joy and contentment on a mother’s face when she sings it to her infant, that happiness can be achieved with the simplest of actions.

What I was not aware of until this survey was released Monday (you can read it in detail on Statistics Canada’s website) is that there is, celebrated every March 20, an International Day of Happiness. I guess, as it coincides with the first day of spring, there is reason enough to be happy that winter is finally over – at least according to the solstice.

What about the capital cost of the arena that we’re paying for?

That number should get included with the operating deficit to show the real cost of this foolish endeavour.

have gone elsewhere – such as policing and paying for much needed infrastructure upgrades. Just taking a drive westbound down South Fraser Way is enough to drive you crazy – every manhole is too far below grade, and I’ve already replaced one strut on my car after a mere 55,000 kms.

weekend – the dedicated depot at the Abbotsford Baptist Church expands the service for a local school and is aimed at helping entire families.

The Starfish program launched in 2012 through the Rotary Club of Abbotsford and now serves 262 students at 20 schools. The packs provide enough food for a child’s meals for the weekend.

Bruce Beck, the Rotary club’s director of community service, said the school district estimates about 400 students in Abbotsford are in need of food assistance.

The program is currently run through Rotary, the Abbotsford Food Bank and numerous donors and volunteers from the community and churches. Beck said the program is “cooperation at its finest.”

In what organizers say they hope is the first of many depots, volunteers will help administer the program and connect families with additional food and support.

Beck said the vast majority of students receiving packs have working parents who often go hungry to feed their children.

Abbotsford Food Bank executive director Dave Murray said it is a privilege to work with the Abbotsford Baptist Church on the program.

John Wyness, pastor of the church, said they are happy to be a part of this program as they are floored by the statistic of kids going hungry.

The cost of providing weekend meals to one child for the school year is $525. Anyone who would like to contribute to the program can do so by calling the food bank at 604-8595749 or visit the site at 33914 Essendene Ave. Cheques can be made out to the Abbotsford Food Bank, with Stafish Pack Program on the notation line.

‘Inappropriate relationships’ Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

A former Abbotsford high school principal recently had his teaching certificate suspended for four months after having relationships with three teaching assistants (TA).

Bruce Preston, B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation, stated in a discipline ruling issued on March 27 that Michael Edmund Ewert acted “unprofessionally and inappropriately” and “used his position of power and authority as principal” when conducting the relationships.

Ewert was the principal of Colleen and Gordie Howe middle school in Abbotsford at the time.

According to the “consent resolution agreement,” Ewert began a sexual relationship with the first TA in 2008 and 2009. He often spent work time talking with her about personal matters, and used his position to influence her being assigned to the school, the document states.

When Ewert discovered the TA had a drug problem, he told her she could not drive students in her car, which her job sometimes required her to do, but he did not report the matter to district administration. The document states that Ewert’s relationship with the second TA took place from September 2009 to December 2010, and the third was in 2010 and 2011.

The Abbotsford school district began an investigation of Ewert in July 2011, at which time he denied having any relationships with the three women, the agreement states.

The suspension was in effect from Dec. 1, 2014 to March 31, 2015.

Locals claim medals at BC Skills contest

Several Abbotsford students claimed medals at the BC Skills Competition held Wednesday at Tradex in Abbotsford.

The event attracted more than 400 participants in 35 contest areas such as carpentry, culinary arts, fashion technology, welding, hairdressing, electronics and computer animation.

The competitors all qualified for the provincials after winning gold medals at regional events, including the Upper Fraser Valley event on March 5 at University of the Fraser Valley’s trades and technology centre in Chilliwack.

Those who won gold at the provincials now advance to the national contest, taking place May 27 to 30 in Saskatoon, Sask.

Moir gets conditional discharge for uttering threats Vikki HOPES

A man who is awaiting a new trial for the murder of 14-year-old Chelsey Acorn of Abbotsford has been given a conditional discharge for uttering threats during a roadrage incident last summer.

Dustin Moir, 29, was placed on probation for one year on April 9 in Port Coquitlam provincial court.

A conditional discharge requires that an individual abide by certain conditions for a set time, but does not result in jail time.

Moir was charged last July with uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm on July 9 and two counts of breaching his bail conditions on June 12, all in Maple Ridge.

The breach charges are being dealt with separately, and the trial on that matter is set to begin May 4 in Chilliwack provincial court. The charges stem from prior conditions that Moir was under after having been released from prison on bail in August 2013.

At that time, his conditions included that he keep the peace, reside with his wife, abide by a daily curfew of 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., and seek/maintain employment.

Moir was convicted in February 2010 of the 2005 first-degree murder of Acorn and received a life sentence.

Acorn’s remains were found April 2006 in a shallow grave near the Carolin Mines exit off the Coquihalla Highway outside of Hope.

An autopsy confirmed that her skull had been crushed with a rock in the fall of 2005 and she had been strangled and buried naked. Moir and his father, Jesse Blue West, 62, were charged with her murder and both were convicted in separate trials.

An Abbotsford student’s comic strip has won a national contest that will bring her school a prize of $3,000.

Harsimran Johal, a Grade 8 student at Dasmesh Punjabi School, won the Telus Wide footprint comic contest, which received 400 entries from kids across Canada ages 8 to 18.

The comic strips were based on four digital literacy scenarios and the winner was determined by an online vote.

Johal’s comic was called Friends Forever. She will receive $500 in addition to the $3,000 that will go to her school’s digital literacy program. A Telus executive will present the cheque to Johal next week.

There’s a touch of Italian luxury in Crescent Beach, thanks to Tuscan Developments and its president, Mark Peers.

Their recent renovation takes advantage of a fantastic location to create a home that’s perfect for a family, and unrecognizable from the original home. Peers purchased the existing house, built in 1975, because he saw it as a “wonderful opportunity” to create something beautiful.

“The home had great bones,” he says. “Everything was in excellent shape. This saved us hundreds of thousands of dollars by using the existing house.”

The $2-million renovation, which changed both the layout and the exterior facade, took a year from beginning to end, and later sold for over $5 million after the house was completed.

Peers calls the home Villa del Sol Ponente, which means House of the Sinking Sun in Italian.

It’s an appropriate name.

“From the kitchen you look through French doors over the in-

Ànity pool and to the ocean,” he says. Sunsets are never in the short supply through the huge windows, and the homeowners are able to take advantage of unrestricted 180-degree views of the PaciÀc ocean to the west and the surrounding forest to the east.

The original home didn’t take advantage of these surroundings.

“It was designed for an urban lot that was built looking inward instead of outward,” says Peers. “We focused on the ocean and brought it into the home.”

Peers and his team removed all of the interior walls from the main Áoor of the home, and created a seamless open Áoor plan.

“We put in major steel beams to support the second Áoor after we removed the walls from the main Áoor,” he says. “This house had too many bedrooms, so we removed the bedroom above the living room and created 20-foot ceilings. It enabled us to place large windows above the new French doors.”

Light now pours into the home through those large windows, and the doors open onto the pool and garden area.

“I love the layout; it’s just to die for,” says Peers. “From the kitchen, the living room is on the left and a kids’ playroom is on the right with a Àreplace and doors that open onto the pool.

It means the family can all be together without being on top of each other.”

The original family room is now called the Arizona Room, after Peers removed the exterior wall and replaced it with an Eclipse Moving Wall that can open up completely to the outside. It holds an indoor Àre pit that can be used for barbecues

year-round, and has direct access to the pool and hot tub.

The kitchen, now moved to the centre of the home, is seriously spectacular, with granite Áooring and marble countertops. Peers and his team also added a spice kitchen off the main kitchen.

“The spice kitchen is where the action happens!” says Peers.

There is also a wine cellar and huge pantry that blends seamlessly with style of the elegant kitchen.

The main Áoor also features a stunning powder room, which was integral to the renovation.

“The powder room is the most important room in the house,” Peers says. “When people come over, they form an opinion of you and your home from looking at the powder room. This one … is really beautiful.”

Another important room is the laundry room, which Peers notes is integral to the successful running of the house when you have a family.

“You spend half your life in there!” he says.

Now, the no-longer-utilitarian laundry room has plenty of space for sorting, folding and ironing, as well as tons of storage.

The beauty continues upstairs. With the removal of some of the Áoors upstairs to create the 20-foot ceilings in the living area, Peers was able to create a Áoating walkway that adds to the incredible sense of space in the home.

Every bedroom now has ocean views, a walk-in closet and an ensuite bathroom. The master bathroom in particular is gorgeous.

“The old bathroom was horrid,” Peers says. “It was a 1976 shagadelic pink bathroom with no windows.”

Now, the master bath has a huge window beside the soaker tub that overlooks the ocean, dual vanities and a large luxurious shower.

The low-ceilinged, dark basement below the living room has become a home theatre with eightfoot ceilings after Peers raised the Áoor above. There is also a Tuscan-style bar and French doors that lead to the garden.

Outside, the pool required a foundation that would cradle the pool six feet in the air. Peers then built the pool around it to create the inÀnity style.

Villa del Sol Ponente is now a treasured family home, perfect for both relaxing and entertaining.

“The reason you want to renovate is because you want your home to be the place you want to come home to,” Peers says. “You want it to embrace your lifestyle and reÁect you. You want it to be the space where you feel most comfortable and happy.”

After a seventh-place finish and first-round playoff exit last season, the Abbotsford Cardinals senior squad is looking for a bounce back year.

The Cards got off to a good start in their season-opener on April 14, defeating Whalley 6-1 in British Columbia Premier Baseball League action.

Cards manager Corey Eckstein praised the pitching performance of Hunter Cunningham, who went seven strong innings. Eckstein said he’s excited about this year’s young squad, which has several Grade 11s and some solid returnees, like catcher/3B Tanner Rempel. In Tuesday’s victory, Jeremy Longpre led the Cards with three RBIs, while Carter Loewen added two RBIs. On the weekend, the Cards played a pair of doubleheaders on the Island against the Parksville Royals and Nanaimo Pirates and went 3-1.

Abby girls rugby team going to worlds SANIX High School World Rugby Championships in Japan Justin BEDDALL Abbotsford News

A team of female ruby players from Abbotsford is ready to take on the world. The team has been invited to play in the prestigious SANIX High School World Rugby Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, from April 28 to 29.

The 12-girl squad is made up of players from Robert Batemen, Yale and Abbotsford Senior and is coached

by Jodie Cornell and Jennifer Ross, who was named female coach of the year last year by Rugby Canada.

The players include Autumn Garrett, Morgan Ursel Jaylene Soegard, Morgan Walker, Kadeja White, Gabrielle Ehling, Sophia Belsher, Tausani Levale, Mackenzie Carson, Cass Baldo Vivanna Johnson and Sydney Stoltz.

Garrett, the team captain, is excited about the opportunity to “experience another culture and play the sport that we all love, which is rugby.”

To prepare for the competition, the Abby team has been practising weekly at Yale secondary, and three times a week the players get up early to run or do the stairs before school.

“It’s going to be a really cool experience,” said Garrett.

Tournament games will be played in the Global Arena. The Abby team will be facing squads from New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong and Japan.

The Abby players may be from different schools but they have lots of experience playing together.

All but one of them plays for Abbotsford Rugby Club and 10 of these girls represented their province last year in Calgary in the U18s (winning gold) and U16s (winning silver).

British Columbia took two U18 Sevens teams to the Las Vegas International tournament in February and nine of the girls on the squad participated, playing teams from Canada and USA and taking home gold and silver.

“This is a squad of strong athletes who have formed a extraordinary bond from playing together in the last three to four years,” said team manager Amber Garrett.

“This connection is apparent on how they play together on the field and how they continuously push each other to be better players.”

Canucks prospect nets four in series win over Medicine Hat Abbotsford’s Jake Virtanen and his Calgary Hitmen have advanced to Round 3 of the Western Hockey League Playoffs with a 4-3 overtime victory over Medicine Hat on Friday.

Virtanen, the first round pick of the Vancouver Canucks in 2014 and a member of the gold medal-winning Canada squad at the world juniors, scored four goals in the series.

In the first-round series against the Kootenay Ice, Virtanen didn’t find the back of the net but he did manage seven helpers.

Prior to Sunday’s NHL playoff game between the Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks, Virtanen and fellow Canucks prospect Mackenzie Stewart watched the team’s morning skate from the stands alongside president Trevor Linden, scout Stan Smyl and others.

DENMAN, Betty Jean (nee Thiessen) Feb 24, 1945 - April 4, 2015 In Loving Memory It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Betty at the Niagara Falls Hospital with her loving husband by her side. Betty is survived by her husband Ron, daughter Lavern (Steve) Butchart, son Lander Denman and four grandchildren, Tessa, Silas, Carter and Everett.

She will be deeply missed by her five siblings - Rita, Walter, Norma, Jenny and Dorothy, her Focken inlaws, Frank, Hajo, Christian, Ilsa and all their respective family members.

Betty was predeceased by her parents, Gertrude and George Thiessen.

Betty was born in Herbert, Saskatchewan and moved to Abbotsford at 10 weeks old where she grew up on a farm.

“Those days were sweet and innocent-school,family, friends and church was our life”.

Her siblings say that no one could ever be mad at their sweet sister Betty who never complained.

This gracious reputation followed Betty throughout her life as a talented hairdresser and seamstress, devoted homemaker, loving sister, mother, wife, friend, proud grandmother and colorful friend within her Niagara Fall’s community the last 16 years of her life. Her warm personality, integrity and kind actions never wavered; she spread joy to whomever she met with her radiant smile and helping hand. Betty enjoyed sewing, crafts, dancing, yoga, Indian cuisine and culture and lived a full and happy life with Ron. After moving out East, annual family trips to Kamloops and Edmonton (Lavern and Lander’s families) as well as to Abbotsford (family and friends) were a priority.

At Betty’s request, there will be no formal ceremony.

Her husband and children held a private casket-side service prior to her cremation at Arbor Memorial.

Her colorful spirit will continue to teach us to see the good in everyone and everything and remind us to enjoy the moment.

We accept that your angel wings were needed to brightly color our world and you will be forever present in our hearts.

February 1, 1940 April 13, 2015 Adolf Doering went to be with Jesus peacefully with his daughter by his side on April 13, 2015. He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 48 years, Verna, his daughter and son-in-law: Corina & Darryl, his three grandchildren: Colton, Levi, & Daisy, his siblings: Henry (Margaret), John (Joyce), and Ana (John), many nieces and nephews, and friends who are like family. He is predeceased by his son Eric. Adolf spent the past two years trapped in a body that no longer functioned effectively for him, but remained in good spirits and touched the lives of everyone he came in contact with. We as a family are grateful to all the wonderful staff who helped care for him at Valleyhaven. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00pm on Monday, April 27, 2015 at Central Community Church in Chilliwack. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Hilborn, Larry David Larry David Hilborn passed away on April 7, 2015 in the Chilliwack Hospital at the age of 66 years. He was born November 21, 1948 in Calgary, Alberta.

Larry is survived by his sisters, Lorraine Howse and Jacqueline (John) Freitas, nephew Jeremy Pumphrey, who was like a son to him, three nephews and a niece, and his special friends, Lynne, Kathy Marylou , Rick and Keith. He was predeceased by both of his sons, Kenneth and Robert and the mother of his son’s , Jenet.

Larry’s distinguished career as a banker began at the Bank of Nova Scotia and ended with President’s Choice Financial.

He was proud of his accomplishments and earned many awards and accolades for his dedication to his customers.

Larry enjoyed being a Rotarian and Legion member. He had a passion for fishing and had made many friends.

Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, May 1, 2015 at the Mt. Cheam Lions Hall, 45580 Spadina Ave, Chilliwack between 4 and 6 pm.

Special thanks from the family go to the staff in ICU and on Fifth Floor North at Chilliwack Hospital. The care and attention given to Larry in his time of need are greatly appreciated.

Randy had a free spirit and enjoyed the outdoors, spending many years in the north country, especially Fort McMurray, Alberta.

In the early morning of April 15, 2015, Oskar passed away peacefully in the palliative care ward at the Abbotsford hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. It is with deep sadness we announce the death of our mom, grandma and best friend, Carol Ann Lawson (nee Fisher). Carol will be dearly missed by all who were lucky enough to have been touched by her giving heart and caring hands. She was truly a giver to family, charity, community, friends and even to strangers.

Gerhard was born December 27, 1932 in Wielen, Germany to Jan and Geertken Vander Spoel into a farming community. He immigrated to Canada, settling in Edmonton, Alberta, in the spring of 1953 with his fiancé Johanna. In Edmonton, on his 21st birthday during the Sunday service, Gerhard and Johanna were married. They moved to the Fraser Valley in the fall of 1954. After working for several years at various farming and other jobs, Gerhard and Johanna were able to buy a dairy farm in the Mt. Lehman area. They moved to a larger dairy farm in Sumas Prairie in 1966, where they farmed until retiring.

Gerhard was a very active and faithful member of his church and the Christian School, serving many times on church council, and on the school board. For many years, he volunteered at the Bibles for Missions Thrift Store, and also served on the board. He loved going to the auctions and repairing furniture for the store, and continued doing this until recently. The Lord called him home on the morning of April 17, 2015.
