Markerville-area search warrant results in seizure of drugs, vehicles, weapons STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

A search warrant executed on a 130-acre prop-

erty in the Markerville area turned up a wealth of drugs, weapons, and stolen property last Wednesday.

Lake, Innisfail, Blackfalds and Red Deer — numbering more than 100 — spent all day and night scouring the property.

search warrants being carried out in Lloydminster and Kitscoty on the same day as the Markervillearea search.

Those searches turned up methamphetamine, a sawed-off shotgun and several electronic devices police say serve as evidence in the Markervillearea investigation.

Two men and a woman were arrested at the site of the Lloydminster search and charged with various weapons and drug charges.

No seizures were made in Kitscoty.

Police Dog Service Units, an RCMP Emergency Response Team and a Special Tactical Operations Team helped execute the search warrant.

The Priority Crimes Task Force is continuing to work with RCMP in Lloydminster on both area’s investigations. Police say further information will be released as it becomes available.

The investigations fulfill the Task Force’s mandate of sharing intelligence and communication strategies among its participating detachments in a bid to reduce area crime.

A Mercedes, dirt bike and trailer were among the large-scale stolen items seized. Drugs including methamphetamine, cocaine, steroids and GHB were also removed along with several firearms.

The RCMP’s Explosives Disposal Unit out of Edmonton was called in in the evening to seize several explosive devices known as “rail torpedos”. The devices were removed without incident.

Two men and a woman were arrested on site, and will be publicly named once they’ve been formally charged.

Volunteers recognized for community contributions JASMINE O'HALLORAN-HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

To wrap up National Volunteer Week a volunteer gala and awards evening was held at the Community Centre last Friday.

After dinner, volunteers were entertained by comedian Johnny Bagpipes who had the audience laughing and out of breath.

There were three different awards presented — the Healthy Communities Initiative Cup, the 2014 Volunteer of the Year and the Distinguished Volunteer Service.

Denise Bignold and Bob Osmond presented the Kraft Hockeyville committee, who were all dressed in their unique jerseys, with the 2014 Healthy Communities Initiative Cup award.

The committee brought the whole town together through the Sylvan Lake Hockeyville 2014 page, which gave new, rapid and current updates on what was going on. The committee inspired people to vote, and would show people how to vote if they needed assistance. The committee gave the whole town bragging rights.

The committee was honoured to receive the award as Sylvan Lake was named Kraft Hockeyville for 2014.

“Hockeyville did something very special for this community. It's something that we will never forget and we will always be Kraft Hockeyville 2014,” committee member Kelly Edgecombe said.

Karen Miller, the master of ceremonies, announced Ashten Fenwick as the winner of the Town Council Award, 2014 Volunteer of the Year.

Fenwick received several nominations for this award for her dedication to helping seniors and her neighbours.

She was the first volunteer of the Town of Sylvan Lake’s Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) Friendly Visitor Program.

She plays cards and visits with a gentleman once a week and brings a smile to his face.

“It's an honour to work with Community Partners,” Ellerby said. “We have wonderful staff who work so hard and give so much of themselves.”

She said it was nice for Community Partners to be recognized because sometimes they fly under the radar.

“We've been around so long that people sometimes think that we're just there to give out food, furniture, kids clothing or whatever,” Ellerby said. “It's nice to tell everyone what actually happens at Community Partners and what the staff actually do. I appreciate them so much and they work so hard. It's a privilege to be able to work with them. I have loved all the time I have been with them.”

A number of prominent Canadians, including Bank of Canada Governor Stephen Poloz, have raised concerns about the state of business start-ups and entrepreneurship in Canada. There is no question that entrepreneurship is critical to a well-functioning, prosperous economy. New firms are the lifeblood of innovation, creativity, and economic progress. While the decline in business start-ups is a worrying sign for future economic dynamism and progress, the concern has not been met with practical solutions. Capital gains tax reform is one practical possibility.

Consider first the worrying trend in Canada that the rate of business start-ups, a key measure of entrepreneurship, is declining. Since peaking in 2004, the rate of business start-ups, as a share of existing firms, has declined by 16.2 per cent.

Specifically, in 2004 there were 17.9 business start-ups (all firm sizes) per 100 existing firms. The rate has since declined to 15.0 business start-ups per 100 existing firms.

The rate of decline in business start-ups is more pronounced for larger firms (measured by employment).

For instance, the rate of decline in business startups between 2004 and 2012 for firms with 50 to 100 employees was -68.0 per cent.

Some of the explanation for this decline is not par-

ticular to Canada. That is, declines in business startups are also observed in other industrialized countries. For instance, over the last decade of available data (2003-2012), the United States has experienced a decline in the rate of business start-ups of 8.0 per cent.

One likely explanation for the decline, which has to-date been almost totally ignored, is the relationship between demographics and entrepreneurship. Younger people, for example, are less risk averse and more prone to question the status quo and experiment. Such characteristics are key to the entrepreneurial process. In older populations, not only are there proportionately less young workers with these characteristics but they are typically not in positions of influence within firms.

Canada, like all industrialized countries, is experiencing an aging of the population where a larger and larger share of the population is over the age of 65.

Statistics Canada expects the portion of those over the age of 65 as a share of the population to increase by 74.1 per cent between 2008 and 2035.

Given the importance of entrepreneurship to the economy and the absence of any serious policy options available to governments with respect to demographics, it's critical that governments enact policies supportive of entrepreneurship.

One such policy lever is capital gains tax reform.

Capital gains taxes are applied to the sale of an asset when its sales price is

nominally (not adjusted for inflation) above its original purchase price. The sale price is based on the present value expected by the purchaser from the future stream of income received by the asset. However, that stream of income is subject to annual taxes. The application of a capital gains tax after the sale is a type of double taxation and worse still, it creates disincentives for entrepreneurs and firms that finance entrepreneurs.

Currently, Canada has the 14th highest capital gains tax rate among the OECD countries despite two reductions in the tax rate implemented by the

Chretien Liberals. A number of options for capital gains tax reform exist, but one that holds great policy and practical promise is the replication of a Clinton-era reform from the U.S. Specifically, the Clinton Administration created a rollover provision whereby the proceeds of a sale of an asset are exempt from capital gains if they are reinvested within a specific time period, perhaps six months. Such a reform frees up capital today that could boost entrepreneurship while deferring the eventual capital gains taxes.

Improving the incentives for, and the environment

within which entrepreneurship occurs, can help mitigate the demographic headwinds currently impeding entrepreneurship, which has clear and serious implications for the economy as a whole. Capital gains tax relief offers an opportunity for Canada to super-charge entrepreneurship, and it's worth considering.

Dear Editor, We wish to pass along a great big thank you to the community of Sylvan Lake for their generosity towards the Sylvan Lake Food Bank.

Our son Keagan chose for his 30-hour Chief Scout Award service project to organize a food drive in Sylvan Lake. He enlisted the help of Mormon Helping Hands, where members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints dropped off yellow donation bags the week of

April 12 to residents, and the donated bags of food were collected on April 18.

Approximately half of the town received these yellow bags, and over 400 bags were filled with non-perishable items that were then delivered to the Sylvan Lake Food Bank.

This effort could not have happened without the assistance of many, including the residents of Sylvan Lake who generously donated, the 70-plus volunteers of Mormon Helping Hands, the

Sylvan Lake Food Bank who offers assistance to many, Troy Rushton of Trilliant Real Estate and Dale Plante of SIM Reality for the use of their moving trucks.

Thank you doesn’t go far enough to express the gratitude and generosity of this community.

It is our hope to participate in this event annually.

Alcohol ‘likely’ a factor in fatal rollover: police STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Police suspect alcohol as a factor in a single-vehicle rollover that claimed the life of a 20-year-old Sylvan Lake man last Friday.

The incident occurred at around 6:40 a.m. on Highway 11 just east of Sylvan Lake. An eastbound GMC Sierra left the road, struck a guardrail and rolled onto its roof ending up partially submerged in a creek.

Bystanders who stopped found two people trapped under water in the truck, and pulled them both from the vehicle before administering first aid until help arrived.

The passenger, a 25-year-

old Red Deer woman, was taken to hospital in Red Deer, and at press time remained in intensive care.

The driver, a 20-year-old Sylvan Lake man, was pronounced dead on scene.

Police said alcohol and

speed “likely” contributed to the crash, and were continuing to investigate with help from an RCMP collision analyst.

Sylvan Lake RCMP, the Sylvan Lake Fire Department and Associated

EMS responded to the initial call, while Alberta Environment was also summoned to help deal with fluids from the vehicle that leaked into the creek.

Police aren’t releasing names at this time.

Council touting downtown site for special events STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Town council wants to see more special events taking place on the ‘Old Hotel Site’ on the corner of Lakeshore Drive and 50 Street.

Councillors discussed potential uses for the site in light of the site’s omission from the mobile vending pilot project that begins this spring.

Coun. Megan Chernoff said she felt the site acted as a “fabulous location for special events,” and wondered

how the Town could encourage more of them to take place on it.

Coun. Matt Prete agreed, and felt special events — as opposed to a more permanent fixture — would be the most suitable option for the site.

He said he’d like to see community groups make use of the site’s convenient location and functionality for their events and fundraisers.

“They’d have an area or location, it’s safe with the fencing, and it’s a fantastic venue,” he said. “That’s why

I see it as a special events (site) as opposed to an ongoing business being there.”

Mayor Sean McIntyre noted that the now-defunct Shake the Lake festival had been previously held successfully on the grounds.

That festival came complete with a stage, bouncy castles, mini-golf games, a halfpipe and “well over a couple thousand people,” according to McIntyre — “all at the same time.”

“As far as an attractor for downtown is concerned, that’s a huge attractor,” he said.

Chief administrative officer Betty Osmond offered councillors clarification on what may constitute a special event.

“If an organization wanted to put a busker or a food vendor down there, I don’t think you can justify that as a special event,” she said. “It

is fairly broad, but we can’t take it to the point where we’re actually taking mobile vending and making it an event itself.

“I think in terms of what we’ve seen, we can pretty much accommodate anything we want.”

Council approved a

motion directing administration, when renewing the lease for the site, to seek permission for special events to be held regularly on it.

The site may be utilized for temporary mobile vending only during special events.

The Red Deer Aboriginal Dance Troupe visited the school and demonstrated various cultural dances, inviting students and staff to join them. The Sylvan Lake Library is seeking nominations for an aspiring young writer to send to an arts-based summer camp at Kamp Kiwanis outside of Calgary this June.

The YouthWrite Peak Experience will host young writers and proponents of other art forms June 28 to July 3. The Sylvan Lake Library — thanks to donations collected through this year’s Polar Bear Dip — has enough funds to send one local youth.

A contest is being held to determine who should receive the funds.

Entries to be submitted to the library must outline the nominated youth’s experi-

ence in English- and Language Arts-based school courses, extra-curricular creative writing activities, publishing experience and reasons why he or she should attend the camp.

Contact names for the entrant — who must be between the ages of 14 and 19 — and the entrant’s parents must also be provided.

Entries will be reviewed by library staff, and one winner will be chosen. He or she will have his or her registration fee paid by the library and receive a free T-shirt.

Six adults will have their heads shaved at the Sylvan Lake Fire Department between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on May 2 to raise money for the Alberta Ride to Conquer Cancer, which is taking place Aug. 8 and 9.

Items will be auctioned off and the proceeds will go to the Alberta Ride to Conquer Cancer.

Sylvan Lake resident Coreen Spencer and several of her co-workers will be shaving their heads. This group includes her co-workers — the principal of St. Teresa of

Avila School in Red Deer Rob Maloughney and the school’s office staff Tanya Stooshnoff, Kathy Heisler, Sandy Hamel and Jenelle Sirois.

Spencer said she hopes that 200 to 250 people will show up at the event and she hopes to raise $2,500 for the Alberta Ride to Conquer Cancer.

Being the only one with long hair out of her team, Spencer said she is going to put her hair into several pony tails on her head and will have people pay a certain amount to shave off a pony tail.

Spencer said she will be donating her hair to Locks of Love, an organization that makes wigs for children.

“My hair is long enough for having a wig made for a child, which makes me feel a bit better,” Spencer said. “I’m a little bit stressed about having some peach fuzz, but it will be OK.” Spencer said Kathy Heisler, one of the ladies shaving her head for this event, is a cancer survivor and knows how it feels to be bald. She said Heisler said it feels so good because you don’t have to do anything with your hair in the morning, and the reality is that the hair will grow back.

Hair stylists from Pure Hair Studio and Wellness Spa have volunteered to be the head shavers for this event.

Students learn freedom of speech by keeping quiet WHY PICKING ROCKS IS A LIFE LESSON

I did not grow up on a farm but my first actual job involved working for the farmer who lived across the way from us. I spent the better part of a summer throwing hay bales and picking rocks. Picking rocks baffled me though – I mean if you picked all the rocks off a field then why would you have to go back next spring and pick more? Was there a rock fairy that magically placed rocks back onto a field that was rock free last year?

You know when you think you’ve got something licked?

Perhaps it’s a bad habit or a way of treating people you know is wrong – and all of a sudden it shows up after seemingly being gone forever? Just like the farmer’s field, one season picked clean and the next desperately in need of cleaning – again (and perhaps again and again!).

I have since learned that some types of soil are more prone to suddenly appearing rocks than others; and that the real reason they appear has something to do with frost heaving or tillage practices or something like that.

I could try to explain it all but I prefer to simply use the rock strewn fields of my youth as a life lesson.

Those rocks tell me of just how amazing God’s grace is. I needed God’s grace to find freedom and salvation in the first place and now I need God’s grace to help me deal with all the junk that keeps surfacing and resurfacing in my life.

And so every time I go for a drive in the country and see a pile of rocks at the edge of a field – I give thanks to God for his wonderful Grace!

A Grade 4 and 5 classroom at École Mother Teresa School was filled with students who drew special symbolic pictures while not daring to peep a word last Thursday afternoon.

The students were participating in a campaign called Vow of Silence from the international Free The Children charity. Together they watched videos online, discussed what freedoms children in other countries don't have and remained silent for 45 minutes.

One of the school's teachers, Heather Weaver, has been involved with the charity for 15 years now, and said the main reason why the school participates in the initiative is to take a stand for others who don't have a voice in the world.

She said she has discussions with the students on what their freedoms and rights are and how they are free to say what they want without being punished.

The students learned that other children their age are denied the freedom of speech and deal with severe consequences if they take a stand.

“We discussed it in the classes of where we don't even think that others don't have a right such as freedom of speech,” Weaver said. “We've viewed some of the videos from the Free The Children website on the Vow of Silence. The students were shocked to learn

that kids their age do not have a right to say what they feel.”

Weaver said that one of the videos shown to the students was about a young girl, Malala Yousafzai from Pakistan, who chose to speak up about being denied education, which resulted in her being shot in the head. The girl's life was saved by an English physician who surgically removed the bullet, but she was shot all because she choose to speak out about the right to an education.

Weaver said one of the most important things the students are learning from participating in the campaign is how life is often taken for granted in Alberta.

“Once we step outside that bubble and outside those borders, we realize that life can be drastically different for others who are the exact same age as we are,” Weaver said.

She said the students have been involved with having many conversations around how life would be different outside of their own borders. They have been learning why other children their own age can't speak out, who controls that and why there are corrupt governments in the world that make different nations so different and what allows them to have the rights that they do and that others don't.

“The Vow of Silence focuses on all human beings in the world who do not have that freedom,” Weaver said.

Police taser knife-carrying Condor man

April 11 12:53 a.m. – RCMP received a complaint of a fight and possible underage drinking at a location on Range Road 10 near Township Road 402.

Members attended and located numerous youth however there was no fight in progress. The party was disbanded without incident.

8:12 a.m. – A 35-yearold female is facing a charge in relation to possessing stolen items. The female was found to have in her possession mail that was stolen during the commission of a break and enter into a residence and the theft of a motor vehicle in the Red Deer area. As a result of further investigation, the female was formally charged with possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.

1:01 p.m. – RCMP responded to a motor vehicle collision on 47th Avenue at 43rd Street in Sylvan Lake resulting in non-life threatening injuries. Community Peace Officers reported to RCMP that a 15-year-old youth had sustained injuries after a scooter he had been riding had crashed

into a parked vehicle. The male advised that he had not seen the vehicle and had dropped his scooter resulting in him sliding under the parked vehicle. The male was transported to hospital for treatment.

7:04 p.m. – A domestic dispute on 50A Avenue in Sylvan Lake resulted in charges being laid against a 35-year-old male.

A 35-year-old female contacted RCMP to report that her ex-boyfriend had entered into her residence uninvited and began to cause a disturbance including damaging some of the complainant’s property. The male eventually left the residence after police were contacted. The accused was arrested a short time later and is formally charged with mischief under $5,000 and failure to comply with the condition of a recognizance.

April 12 3:12 a.m. – Police attended a location on Whitecap Close in Sylvan Lake after a report that a youth was in emotional distress and lying on the ground in front of a residence. The youth was checked and was determined to be intoxicated but otherwise in good physical condition. She was transported to cells where she remained until sober.

2:34 p.m. – A theft of a vehicle on Halsall Street in Sylvan Lake was reported to RCMP. The owner told police that sometime overnight, a Dodge Ram was stolen from outside his residence. The vehicle was locked at the time of the

incident. An investigation is underway.

April 13 11:52 a.m. – A snowmobile was stolen from a business on Township Road 394 near Eckville. The skid steer was stolen from a compound sometime over the weekend. An investigation into the theft is continuing.

April 16 12:23 a.m. – An impaired driving complaint was received by RCMP dispatch involving a group of intoxicated people outside a business on 47th Avenue. Two males and a female were involved in an altercation with a cab driver and were told to leave the cab at which time they entered into a vehicle and began

driving southbound on Highway 20. Police conducted a traffic stop and the 23-year-old male driver, a resident of B.C., was charged with impaired driving and having a blood alcohol level over .08.

1:45 a.m. – A 32-yearold male is facing several charges in relation to a domestic dispute at a residence on Reid Court in Sylvan Lake. A 911 call was received of a dispute in progress. A 24-year-old female with non-life threatening injuries was treated

by EMS and transported to hospital. A Sylvan Lake male is charged with assault; assault causing bodily harm; assault with a weapon; and overcoming resis-

tance to the commission of an indictable offence.

11:20 a.m. – Sylvan Lake Community Peace Officers conducted a check on a parked vehicle and discovered a male in the passenger seat in a highly intoxicated state. RCMP were notified and arrested the male for public intoxication. A search of the male resulted in the seizure of a controlled substance.

A 37-year-old Sylvan Lake male was subsequently charged with the possession of cocaine.

10:54 p.m. – A 911 call was received of a suspicious vehicle on Township Road 372 near Highway 781.

yard lights were activated on their property. The complainant began following the suspect vehicle and contacted RCMP to report that the vehicle was being driven erratically. A traffic stop was initiated by police but the driver failed to stop.

The driver was located in the Condor area. He confronted police with a knife in his possession and a struggle ensued. A taser was utilized as officers subdued the male. A 41-yearold resident of Condor is facing multiple charges including flight from police; possession of a weapon dangerous to the public; assaulting a peace officer; and resisting arrest. Further charges are pending.

The following article was submitted as part of a yearlong campaign organized by the Vision for Non-Violence Sylvan Lake Chapter and Building Bridges sub-committee to raise awareness of the family violence and bullying that takes place in Sylvan Lake and area, and the resources available to help cope with them.

Family violence affects us all — and there are no simple solutions to this complex and pervasive issue. It can happen to anyone, of any age, culture or demographic. It is costly;

the human costs attributed to family violence are immeasurable, as the impacts last a lifetime.

As a community, we will work to reduce children’s

exposure to violence in their homes, teach youth about respectful and healthy relationships and influence our society to embrace nonviolent behaviours.

Teacher appreciation - On April 12, students, teachers and guests from around Central Alberta gathered in Red Deer to read, receive and listen to tribute letters written by graduating youth belonging to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The theme of the Teacher Appreciation Night event was ‘Teaching: No Greater Call’. School districts issue joint statement expressing budget concerns STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

School districts across the province on Monday voiced their concerns with the negative impact they feel the 2015-2016 provincial budget will have on Alberta students.

In a statement endorsed by 19 Alberta school districts — including Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools and Chinook’s Edge School Division in the Sylvan Lake area — the districts say 12,000 new students are expected to enroll in Alberta schools next year, and about 36,000 in the next three years.

FAÇADE IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM Now in its second year, the Façade Improvement Program is designed to encourage retail and commercial building owners to invest in facade renovations and storefront upgrades by providing grants to cover a portion of renovation costs. Grants will be awarded to eligible applicants to cover up to 50% of the façade renovation costs, up to a maximum dollar value. The 2015-16 grant program will provide an incentive for 50th Street/Centennial Street buildings to complete façade upgrades that contribute to the Waterfront Area, by creating a more interesting and appealing street environment that attracts people and new businesses.

The budget tabled by the provincial government, the districts feel, doesn’t adequately support that anticipated growth. “By not funding growth, we are effectively reducing the per pupil funding for every student while increasing class sizes,� the districts said in their joint statement. “Growing districts are forced to attempt to provide the same level of service for more students with less funding.�

The districts say the budget will force them to reduce support services while increasing teachers’ workloads. Schools’ most vulnerable students, they say, will suffer from increased class sizes.

They’d like to see the government work alongside them toward a solution that

would encourage and foster student growth and success. “As growing districts, we ask the government to reconsider and to work with our school districts on a collaborative approach to restraint that will sustain student success, support student growth and provide enough autonomy and flexibility for local board officials to address the most pressing areas of concern for their districts. “We understand and support the goal of achieving a balanced budget and building long-term success for Alberta.

However, the effect on education cannot be underestimated; we believe education is key to the overall success and future of our province.�

the post office was moved to the new federal government building where it stands today on the corner of 50A Avenue and 50A Street.

Postie, a stray cat, has celebrity status. A local resident, Bev (Sontag) Jones, recorded a story about a real cat which took place in 1992-93. Look for a copy in the present display at the Sylvan Lake and District Archives.

mail. The mail was sent from Red Deer to Burnt Lake where the postmaster or a helper picked it up by horseback or with a horsedrawn vehicle three times a week.

The mail began arriving daily by train from Red Deer on July 19, 1915.

However, by 1955 trucks had taken over this service.

The second location of the post office was on 46 Street in Edmond Rosse’s store, 1912 to 1928, at which time the new owner of the store, Walter T. Toye, died suddenly. His wife took over as post mistress but sold the store and moved to a small building on Main Street, and served in that capacity until retiring in 1950. Her replacement, Postmaster George Schill, took over January 1, 1951.

The following article and accompanying pictures were submitted by the Sylvan Lake and District Archives Society as part of a series celebrating the society’s 20 years of existence this year.

The Archives Society is open to the public every Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 4 p.m. at its new location in the lower level of the town’s Municipal Government Building.

In 1900, Mr. Victor Pastobak and two friends came by train to Red Deer, Northwest Territories, and walked to Snake Lake seeking farmland similar to that in their homeland, Finland.

He, Mr. Pastobak, ‘chose a homestead two miles west’ for his family of a wife and four children.

In the local history book, Reflections of Sylvan Lake (1984), on page 327 a family member describes the first mail delivery in the area thus: “Red Deer was the nearest post office. The settlers put a box on top of a post three miles west of the lake.

Anyone going to Red Deer brought the mail for the whole district, put it in the box, and each family sorted their own.”

By 1907 the NWT address had been changed to Alberta and Snake Lake had been renamed Sylvan Lake when Charles M.H. Archambault was sworn in as Sylvan Lake’s first postmaster on May 1. He had set aside one corner of his general store and built beside Loiselle’s first hotel on Lakeshore Drive for the

The next phase of the NexSource Centre Multiplex Redevelopment Project is scheduled to begin in a few weeks, said Ron Lebsack, director of community services for the Town of Sylvan Lake, at a sponsors and local businesses meeting held at Sylvan Star Cheese last week.

Lebsack said construction workers will be in the ground in about three weeks to move some dirt around and work on utilities.

The overall budget for this project was $30.4 million with the project aiming to be completed sometime in late

2016 or early 2017, Lebsack said.

He said the project is going very well as the design stage is being finished off with workers heading towards starting construction.

“We have a great team on board of architects, engineers and now our construction managers in Clark Builders,” Lebsack said. “Things are progressing really well.”

Guests of the evening were given a full sponsorship package, which included sponsor opportunities, as more sponsors are needed.

“The arena, the curling rink and the seniors centre are still available for sponsors,” Lebsack said. “If you build it,

they will come. With construction starting in about three weeks we hope to wrap up the interest again and get some more sponsors on board.”

When the facility opens it will serve many purposes such as being an overall sports complex, a place to hold community events, a seniors community centre and a town hub, said Clark Builders senior project manager Brent Siminick.

“This will be an all-in-one community building,” Siminick said. “Rather than separate facilities, it will be state of the art. Along with the town, we’re really excited to be a part of it. We’re excited to be providing a hub for the community.”

Generals take second at Allan Cup in Newfoundland STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

The Bentley Generals’ Allan Cup run was brought to an end on Saturday with a 2-0 defeat by the Manitoba-based South East Prairie Thunder.

Mark Agnew of the Prairie Thunder opened the scoring at 14:41 in the second period of the tournament’s final game in Clarenville, N.L. Shawn Limpright added a second goal at 4:24 in the third period to secure the game and win the cup for the Prairie Thunder.

It was an unwanted end to the tournament for the Generals, who saw off strong

opposition from across the country to earn their spot in the final.

The Generals opened the tournament with a 3-2 victory over the host Clarenville Caribous on April 14. They then defeated New Brunswick’s Lameque Au P’tit Mousse by a score of 4-1 on April 15, before overcoming the Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts 5-4 in overtime two days later.

The Generals last won the Allan Cup in 2013, when they defeated the Clarenville Caribous 3-0 as the tournaments hosts.

They defeated the South East Prairie Thunder four years before that to become champions in 2009.

Next year’s tournament will be held in Steinbach, Man.

Sylvan Lake’s very own 10-year-old Elijah Fullerton will be flying with his mother, Mandi Fullerton, to Los Angeles to prove his talents to a panel of 12 scouts for the International Presentation of Performers (IPOP) July 1 to 5, according to Fullerton.

After receiving a call back, the Undiscovered Talent Group signed him to train for another audition to go to Los Angeles.

A student in Grade 5 at Lighthouse Christian Academy, Fullerton said her son has performed in plays with his school and this is where his talent was noticed.

“He really took to performing and singing so we had him in vocals, piano and violin lessons,” Fullerton said. “He was in a Christmas play one year and was really quite good at it. He memorized it all very well and he delivered the lines like they were his own.”

To show the community the young talent living in town, Fullerton is hosting a talent night at the Gospel Chapel where at least four singers including her son will be performing.

“We’re going to do some fundraising and finding supporters and putting on a local talent night,” Fullerton said. “We’ve invited all local talent to perform what they do.”

The performance will be on June 13 and will start at 7 p.m. and end at 9 p.m. and there will be complimentary treats, coffee and tea. A silent auction will also be available.

Tickets can be purchased at the door for $10 or can be pre-purchased at Arayah’s Hair Design and Day Spa or Lighthouse Christian Academy.

Fullerton said the overall trip to Los Angeles will cost

$9,000, but is hoping to raise $5,000, as they have to pay for the flight and pay for their stay at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, as she said IPOP rented the entire hotel and that’s where the children will train and perform in front of their scouts.

“The agents mingle with the scouts and watch them while they are training and things like that, and the children perform for them,” Fullerton said.

Going to Los Angeles to be coached and to perform in front of a panel of agents is huge for Fullerton’s son as she said he has come a long way as he is autistic.

“I know that people really stereotype autism but he’s not ashamed of it and neither am I,” Fullerton said.

Fullerton described her son as being different because he thinks deeper than the average 10-yearold. She said he is sensitive to other people’s emotions and is very sensitive to things emotionally.

“Generally people get a vision in their head that autistic people don’t acknowledge other people in the room or could care less about other people’s feelings,” Fullerton said.

“But Elijah is actually the other way to an extreme.”

She said he is very excited to be going to Los Angeles as he will train with two vocal coaches that had formerly competed in American Idol.

“They are pretty big names that are putting on the training and the children perform for a banquet for the top agents and scouts,” Fullerton said.

What’s Happening

FITZGERALD Gertrude Diana Marie (nee Huneault) Feb. 7, 1947 - Apr. 16, 2015 After a long and arduous battle with Multiple Sclerosis it is with a deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of our dearest Wife, Mom, Grandma, Daughter, Sister and Friend, Gert Fitzgerald.

She was born and raised in Warren, Ontario where she eventually met the love of her life, Ted Fitzgerald. Together they raised three beautiful daughters and were very involved in numerous c o m m u n i ty activities. After retirement they headed west and settled in Sylvan Lake, AB to be closer to their girls and grandchildren.

Gert is survived by and will be deeply missed by her loving husband and best friend Edmund (Ted) Fitzgerald, her daughters Kim Chernuska (Al), Jennifer Goruk (Shaun) all of Airdrie, AB and Stephanie Fitzgerald of Turks and Caicos.

She was “Grandma” to her three special boys Chris, Stephen and Ryan Chernuska and her “Little Angel” Kayla Goruk.

She is also survived by her Family in Ontario, Mother MarieAnne Huneault, brother Jacques Huneault (Rachel), Sisters Rita Perrault (Rick), Lise Seguin (Dan), Joanne Falconer (Ken) and Sylvia Larochelle (Michel). Gert also left behind several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and numerous nephews and nieces.

She was pre-deceased by her Father Paul Huneault and brother Guy Huneault.

A memorial service will be held at a future date. Cremation entrusted to the Rocky Mountain Crematorium, Rocky Mountain House, Alberta.

As an expression of sympathy memorial donations in Gert’s name may be made to the MS Society of Canada or the Canadian Diabetes Association.

Sylvan Lake woman encouraging support for event honouring brother’s legacy JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Sylvan Lake resident Cathy Janzen will see the 16th year of the Strathmore Poker Run take place in June as the event is in legacy of her brother Matt Janzen, who passed away from cancer.

All the money raised from the event will go to the Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta.

Janzen’s son Konnor will be participating in the event and has been growing out his hair for a year now. He hopes to raise at least $800 for the foundation. “It’s the legacy,� Janzen said. “It’s something that my brother started and his nephew wants to carry it on for him.�

Friday evening at 6 p.m., with the poker ride on Saturday and a bike rodeo on Sunday.

The poker ride will include five stops in Rockyford, Carbon, Rosedale, Standard and

Green Bar. Riders will pick up a card at each stop and the person who has the best hand wins.

Janzen said she is promoting the event because it was her brother’s dream.

She said when he was diag-

nosed with cancer and was in the cancer ward, he personally saw children suffering from cancer. That’s when he decided to do something to help them and shaved his head. “It’s the committee that

has carried on his dream,�

Janzen said. “But for us as a family carrying on his legacy and his dream and also supporting the Kids Cancer Care Foundation. It does benefit other kids who are suffering.�

Donations are currently being accepted in Sylvan Lake at the Fireside Restaurant and Lounge, Hockey Central, Hazzard County and Open Range.

Donations of $20 and over will be issued a tax receipt.
