A Burnaby family is grieving the loss of their six-year-old daughter after a crash at a Port Coquitlam strip mall Sunday afternoon.

Six-year-old Kianna Moreau was with her mom at the PoCo Shopping Mall at about 3 p.m.

on April 19 when a blue Honda CRV turning from Shaughnessy Street on to Lions Way lost control and hit four pedestrians.

They were all taken to hospital, where Kianna died Monday morning. Her mother remains in hospital in serious condition, along with one other person. A fourth person who was hit was released from hospital Sunday

evening with minor injuries.

Port Moody’s Derek Wilson is preparing for a milestone donation on Thursday, when he’ll lay back, put out his arm and give blood for the 300th time.

Wilson started giving in 1970, when he was a student at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ont., as a way of repaying his father’s first gift to him.

“When I was born, I had a medical condition that required surgery and, back in those days, in the late ’40s, there was no blood collection program like we have today,” Wilson said. “So either a family member had to donate blood that was needed or you had to buy it.”

Wilson’s dad donated the blood he needed for that surgery and it’s why he later became a donor himself. After he graduated from university, Wilson moved to Montreal, where he continued to donate at a clinic near his Canadian National Railway office.

There was a two-year hiatus while Wilson worked in Zambia but when he returned and moved to Sudbury, Ont. he picked it up again.

By 1980, Wilson had moved to Winnipeg for work. “That’s where I really got into it seriously,” he said, dropping in to a clinic every two months over a

two-year period.

But during that time, Wilson’s hemoglobin levels weren’t always high enough to donate and he was rejected a few times

after the initial screening.

That’s when Red Cross staff suggested he join the plasmapharesis program, in which blood is removed, separated and the hemoglobin returned to the donor while the plasma is donated. Because the plasma component of blood is replaced quickly within the body, those in the program can donate every two weeks instead of every two months.

Wilson picked up the pace and continued when he was transferred to Edmonton, where he was donating every two weeks for nearly five years.

“That was an opportunity to really crank up my score,” Wilson said.

When he moved to the Lower Mainland 18 years ago and found the only place to donate plasma was at the main clinic in Vancouver, Wilson went back to donating blood every two months.

Despite his years of donating — whether it’s donating blood,

plasma or a combination of the two — it’s no small feat getting to 300, said Trudi Goels of Canadian Blood Services.

“With Derek, he’s been donating for over 40 years, which is a lifetime commitment he’s made to helping patients,” Goels said, noting the injured victims of a single car accident can need 50 units of blood — that’s 50 donations.

Of Canadian Blood Services’ 400,000 active donors, only six reached the 300 mark last year.

“He’s in a very elite group,” she said.

Wilson has no plans to stop after his milestone donation this week.

“I saw an obituary in the Vancouver Sun about two years ago and it was for a fella who claimed to have the highest number of blood donations in Canada. It was something like 525,” he said, “so I have a long way to go.”

Is TransLink the wastrel its critics claim? Not really THE QUESTION

Is TransLink inefficient?

THE ANSWER

The No campaign website lists example after example of spending it says adds up to “extreme waste” at TransLink.

Yes advocates argue the money involved is insignificant compared to the cost of transit operations, which consume two thirds of TransLink’s $1.4-billion annual budget.

So how does TransLink perform on broad measures of transit service efficiency against other transit systems? Do Metro Vancouver residents get enough for the dollars spent?

Comparisons are tricky because transit systems have different characteristics and there are many ways to gauge them.

Todd Litman of the Victoria Transport Policy Institute says operating cost per passenger kilometre statistics show TransLink has “relatively good” cost efficiency, ranking about average among big Canadian cities and much better than most U.S. systems.

Cost recovery from fares, at around 55% in 2013, was second only to Toronto in this country and much better than its peer U.S. cities, including Seattle and Portland, the latter often seen as a transit mecca for people north of the border.

The numbers Litman uses come from the Canadian Urban Transit Association or the American Public Transit Association.

“An excellent financial performer” with a low taxpayer subsidy and “good value” is how the International Bus Benchmarking Group described TransLink’s bus division earlier this year.

No campaign head Jordan Bateman dismisses all those agencies as industry clubs that do nothing to audit or verify TransLink-submitted data.

The only authority he trusts on TransLink performance is the 2012 report by Shirocca Consulting, commissioned as part of an audit by TransLink’s independent commissioner.

“They actually dug deep into TransLink’s own numbers,” Bateman said. “According to the Shirocca report, it’s grossly worse than other Canadian transit agencies.”

Well, not exactly.

“The organization is well run and manages its costs,” the report said in part.

The bus system is “well delivered and good quality” but has “generally higher costs and lower cost efficiency and effectiveness than most of its peers.”

That’s about as far as Shirocca went in damning TransLink while offering up a list of potential savings — and that report is three years old and based on data from five years ago.

Optimizing bus routes is one way TransLink has saved money.

And according to Litman, some of the comparisons the report relied on were unfair; for instance, TransLink’s performance in covering 1,800 square kilometres was stacked against just the Toronto Transit Commission, with a footprint one third as large, without including other Greater Toronto services in the suburbs.

As the Shirocca review was underway in 2012, as well as a second audit by the provincial government, TransLink had already launched a cost-cutting drive.

A major plank of that drive was the bus service optimization initiative, which shuffled service from underused routes to overcrowded ones where more money could be collected by accommodating more passengers.

A follow-up progress report issued by Shirocca eight months later in November 2012 found the moves, spearheaded by then CEO Ian Jarvis, were working.

“There have been significant reductions in operating costs,” it said, citing $33 million in new annual savings already identified and more in the works, with much of the gains coming from tightening up the bus system.

Bus service optimization was yielding “significant savings without affecting service to the public,” it said, while flagging costs of the Compass card/ faregates system as an area of concern.

New TransLink interim CEO Doug Allen says much has changed in the past three years.

“This is an efficient organization,” he stated in a report to the board March 30. “We provide more bus service today with fewer staff than five years ago and our cost per passenger boarding has dropped 30%.”

TransLink counts $240 million in savings over the last three years and claims it

now delivers each kilometre of service more cheaply than Toronto and Montreal, and the Canadian average.

Transportation Minister Todd Stone last week noted TransLink is widely recognized as “one of the best” systems in the world.

Still, Litman said it’s unsurprising that TransLink’s efficiency may still look bad by certain measures. For instance, wages that are higher than the Canadian average (TransLink’s top rate is $29.78 an hour for bus drivers) are not surprising with housing costs as high as they are in Metro Vancouver, he says.

“There are some good reasons why Vancouver’s costs should be higher than other areas,” he said.

Buses in other cities don’t generally have to cover the vast distances they do here to cross uninhabited farmland in Richmond or Delta where there are no fare-paying passengers.

Another reason is that, unlike more established cities, Metro Vancouver is growing rapidly, particularly in areas such as Surrey, Langley and the Tri-Cities. Adding new bus routes to serve emerging neighbourhoods drives up costs, particularly when there aren’t yet enough residents to support frequent service. And nearempty buses rolling around are a prime target for auditors.

But it’s a chicken-and-egg problem because if the service isn’t offered at a deeper public subsidy, a generation of residents in newly developed areas will grow up driving, more cars will be bought and housing developments won’t be designed with transit in mind.

As well, a blinkered focus on minimizing costs runs the risk of rolling back service south of the Fraser River instead of increasing it, and fundamentally changing how those areas

develop in the future.

“I think there is a danger of going too far,” Litman said of the bus route optimizing that auditors championed in 2012.

“If you simply ask where can we cut service that has low ridership, one of the first things you would do is eliminate late night service and service to the suburbs.”

Ironically, infrequent service is one of the prime reasons many residents south of the Fraser have listed for voting No in the referendum.

Bateman, meanwhile, is not persuaded by the latest efficiency statistics or observations that it was the province that mandated the Compass card/ faregates system and funded the empty South Surrey parkand-ride.

“If TransLink was running so efficiently and wonderfully, why did they dump their CEO? I’m not sure how they can have it both ways.”

Tighter rules about garbage disposal have resulted in a surge of kitchen trash being dumped in Coquitlam parks.

This week, city staff said they’re seeing garbage cans in parks and at trailheads in single-family residential neighbourhoods overflowing with household waste — up to 75% of the trash pulled from the cans.

And they’re recommending city council budget hundreds of thousands of dollars next year to overhaul the parks waste management system.

That plan, if approved in full by council, would see large underground bins installed in the big parks, a retrofit of 200 bins with recycling baskets, 50 new bins just for dog waste and a massive public education campaign about littering.

The suggestions come after an audit was presented Monday to Coquitlam’s council-in-committee. At the meeting, councillors relayed several stories about watching or hearing about residents who had dumped their kitchen waste in parks rather than dispose of it in green cans.

Coquitlam council passed a motion Monday to ask Metro Vancouver to burn dog poop collected from regional parks rather than have a company contracted to open the bags and flush it into the Iona Sewage Treatment Plant. Council said the dog waste removal service is too costly; instead, it argues the excrement should go to the Burnaby incinerator.

Last year, Metro paid Scooby’s Dog Waste Removal Service $60,000 to retrieve 97,000 kg of dog waste from regional parks.

The illegal dumping is happening for a number of reasons, city staff told councillors. They point to population growth, expansion of parks (especially on Burke Mountain), the changeover last summer to a biweekly solid waste pickup that requires source separation, and Metro Vancouver’s

rules — which came into effect in January — to ban organics from the landfill.

Coun. Mae Reid said she believes some homeowners have failed to upsize their city garbage bins to accommodate the amount of waste they produce because of the extra cost.

who have tenants living in secondary suites now don’t have room in their bins to take care of their waste. In other cases, Reid claimed, homeowners simply don’t want to wait until pickup day and want the garbage out of the house.

There’s also the issue of the heftier levy to tip large items such as mattresses.

All of this illegal dumping has added to the bottom line for city disposal, staff say.

“It’s the same everywhere else. It’s not unique to Coquitlam,” parks manager Kathy Reinheimer said. “We get a lot of electronics dumped in the park because it’s simpler than taking it to the right place to dispose of it. Ten or 15 years ago, you could put it out on

your curb to be hauled away — not any more.”

Readers of The Tri-City News have also reported recent upticks in illegal dumping.

Sue Woodward, director of Childgarden Preschool near Mundy Park, said the kids’ “magic forest” has turned into a litter zone, with trash tossed into streams.

“The children are upset and are full of ideas about what should be done about this,” she wrote to The Tri-City News.

“Some ideas include making a sign or driving slowly with a loud speaker to tell the people, ‘Don’t litter, it hurts the animals.’”

Class sizes within limits but on the rise The Tri-CiTy News

Dealing with $13.8 million in cuts this year and trying to avoid more next year, SD43 is raising class sizes in an effort to maximize the use of scarce provincial dollars.

The squeeze is most evident when comparing class size and composition numbers from 2010/’11 to those from this school year, with stats showing that classes for 2014/’15 are larger than the provincial average and larger than they were five years ago, particularly for the younger grades.

But according to School District 43, larger class sizes have become the norm as the district copes with funding it says hasn’t kept pace with inflation.

Below are average class size numbers, both provincewide and in School District 43, for the 2010/’11 and 2014/’15 school years:

“It has become necessary to use our school-based staffing efficiently to fill all the classes as much as possible, especially at our 45 elementary and 14 middle schools,” superintendent Patricia Gartland told The Tri-City News in an email.

Tri-Cities children who are dealing with the effects of sexual abuse, neglect and other trauma are not having to wait so long to get counselling services thanks to a $20,000 grant from Telus.

Act 2 Child and Family Services, which has been providing individual and group counselling as well as play therapy to children as young as two in the Tri-Cities and Maple Ridge for 35 years, saw a dramatic drop in its waiting list from nine months to three months last year. With the Telus donation, more than 400 children were served and the seven counsellors were able to help more kids deal with some terrible situations.

“Good things are happening,” said Brad Watson, the longtime director of the organization, which is funded by the Ministry of Children and Family Development.

According to Watson, timely intervention can make a difference for troubled youth dealing with issues such as sexual abuse and the traumatic loss of a parent. Children who complete Act 2’s therapy are often able to move on in their lives and as many as 90% achieve the goals they set out for themselves during counseling.

“One mom told us their child doesn’t have nightmares anymore,” Watson said, which he said was a good outcome

Unfortunately, the waiting list is creeping back and 150 families are waiting for service.

Vicky Tedesco, a counsellor and team leader, said the number of children needing services has climbed over recent years because the region’s population has grown and people are more aware of the devastating effects

of trauma on children.

“We deal with any event that may cause overwhelming feelings of helplessness and hopelessness,” Tedesco explained, noting that Act 2 counsellors have helped children who were sexually abused by family members and even a child whose mom was murdered.

Only the most challenging cases come to Act 2, typically referred by the Ministry of Children and Family Development and Child and Youth Mental Health and Tedesco and Watson are optimistic that with more funding, such as the Telus donation, more children might get the help they need. “They are loading them up at the max going into the school year,” King said, “and that’s always a real worry, especially for the early primary students. You don’t know what their needs are yet. That’s why we pushed to have early primary classes size low because you need to know where they are at.”

As class sizes climb, the only bright spot appears to be at the secondary level, where averages have held steady, al-

though they’re still higher than the provincial average. Offering fewer unique electives has enabled the district to keep its class sizes larger, a move King said is disappointing because it means students have fewer choices to meet their individual interests.

All the class sizes are within the legislated maximums, however, except for those such as band, which require more students to be successful.

Maloney new top Mountie Coquitlam RCMP’s new top cop has been named.

Sean Maloney, a 33-year veteran Mountie, will take over for outgoing Supt. Claude Wilcott.

“As soon as I heard that the job of OIC Coquitlam RCMP was available, I knew I wanted it,” he said in a press release.

“The men and women of Coquitlam RCMP are known as an exceptionally talented, tight-knit, innovative group

and this detachment has a reputation as having a very strong connection to the communities it serves. I’m really excited to be part of this team.”

Maloney joined the force in 1981 and most recently served as the operations officer in Richmond. He has served in administrative, operational and executive roles, and spent 11 years on the Emergency Response Team and five years

with E Division’s Aboriginal Policing section.

Maloney was born and raised in Gander, N.L., and his first RCMP posting was in Trail, B.C. Coquitlam RCMP detachment serves Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Anmore and Belcarra, and the Kwikwetlem First Nation.

A recurring rat problem at Moody elementary school has prompted School District 43 to hire an exterminator and conduct a de-cluttering campaign to eliminate food and other attractants.

The issue was raised this week in The Province as parents and teachers complained about rat sightings, chewed papers and crayons, and other materials as well as concerns about student and staff safety.

But rats and other pests aren’t an uncommon problem at schools. Wasps and other creatures have to be dealt with and, last year, the district spent more than $92,000 in pest control and wildlife management, according to its Statement of

Financial Information.

Eliminating the rodent problem isn’t easy at Moody because the district can’t use poison because of concerns about the children’s health; for now, rats are being trapped and disposed of but only on weekends and pro-D days.

“It is a public building.

Based on those standards, we are not using that approach; we are baiting traps and using traps when the school is not in use,” said Reno Ciolfi, an SD43 assistant superintendent.

Rats first became a problem in 2009 and show up looking for food and shelter every now and then, Ciolfi said, with the latest incidents probably related to construction along the St. Johns corridor, which disrupts rats and sends them scurrying for cover.

such as paper and crayons the rats might chew on, custodians are stepping up cleaning to ensure there are no signs of rats when children come to school in the morning.

This summer, the district plans a major de-cluttering and renovation to seal passageways frequented by rats and make repairs to problem areas. Rat poison will also be used then to get rid of the vermin.

“The idea is to clean, declutter and upgrade the building in terms of making it look better,” Ciolfi said.

A longer-term plan is in the works to rebuild the school once a new Moody middle school is built but that’s still a few years away, he said. dstrandberg@tricitynews.com @dstrandberg

he good news is b.C.’s reconfirmed aa (high) credit rating. The distressing news comes from School district 43 and a local social service agency that provides counselling for traumatized children. on the one hand, the bC Liberal government deserves some credit for its fiscal discipline. but balancing the b.C. budget hasn’t been easy and there have been some casualties along the way.

Specifically, vulnerable kids are being left behind in the race to keep the province’s budget balanced.

In the case of School district 43, which is now last in b.C. in terms of perstudent funding, operating grants to run schools have not kept pace with inflation, forcing the district to constantly cut staff, cut corners and do other things to stay in the black.

Last year’s bloodletting amounted to $13.8 million in cuts.

While some of the problems in Sd43 were the district’s fault because it was spending more than it was getting in grants. but much can also be blamed on provincial rob-Peter-to-pay-Paul funding rules, under which districts losing students get money from districts, like Sd43, that are stable. and just when this dis-

trict appears to be getting back on its feet budgetwise, it has to absorb another $1.5 million in “administration efficiencies” — Premier Christy Clark’s “low-hanging fruit” — to meet the latest provincial belt-tightening dictum.

Thankfully, Sd43 has scoured the planet for foreign students whose parents are willing to pay $13,000 a year for them to

study here. Without them, the district would not be able to meet its budget obligations. but there are consequences to several years of cuts and many years of underfunding, as the district heard during its recent public budget meetings, with more than 500 students waiting for psychological assessments, speech and language services and other help because those services had to be cut to keep classrooms functioning.

Meanwhile, in the area of serious grief and trauma counselling, services provided by aCT 2 have not kept pace with population, resulting in 150 kids dealing with serious issues while they wait six months or more for help.

Yes, it’s nice that the province has balanced its budget. but knowing that some of this fiscal certainty is on the backs of young children is difficult to accept.

Gov’t need for cash Taxes and DCCs won’t ensured bad deal do the trick for transit The Editor, Re. “Purchase process was competitive” (The Tri-City News, April 16) and “Burke Mt. land sale ‘left $43M on the table’: NDP” (April 14).

The NDP said the BC Liberal government sold the Burke Mountain land in a rush below market value.

Wesbild said it paid fair price.

The provincial government said it was the lowest risk, best offer.

So what is really happening here?

It may be useful to step back and look at this from a negotiation’s perspective. In any negotiation, it is important for any party not to lay all their cards on the table before the negotiation begins.

In the provincial land sale, there is the seller (the government) who wants to sell lands, has made it publicly known that it is in need of money (to balance its books) and has a tight timeline (before the next budget). The buyer (Wesbild)

is interested in buying the land, has tons of cash and is not at all in a rush.

Clearly, government already laid all its cards on the table from the get-go, giving Wesbild the bulk of the negotiating power. In a situation like this, the government could only sell below its appraised value and the question really was how much below the value.

$43M COULD BUY...

The Editor, It outrages me to learn that our BC Liberal government agreed to sell Crown land on Burke Mountain appraised at $128 million for $85 million.

Crown land belongs to the

people of British Columbia.

Selling our land for a pittance is deplorable.

We the people this land belongs to should have had a say or at least know of what is going on behind the scenes.

The difference of $43 million from this sale could have helped many British Columbians. It would have come in handy to help fund our public transit; public health care; public school system and support for a $10a-day daycare program.

The projected growth is now for 20,000 more people to inhabit Burke Mountain by 2040. The impact Coquitlam’s Burke Mountains development of this land will have on Port Coquitlam is currently unfolding and now this below-market sale.

Why would our premier sell Crown land for less than appraised value when we have so much at stake?

The Editor, Re. “Vote Yes, help vulnerable; or vote No, condo taxes can pay” (Letters, The Tri-City News, April 15).

Letter writer W. Sikorra plans to vote No in the transportation referendum based on the following argument: Future urban densification (e.g. from condo highrises) will bring “windfalls” to local government in the form of increased revenue from an expanding property tax base and development cost charges.

This windfall will cover any future funding required to meet the additional demand for public transportation from future population increase.

I’ve already voted Yes but W. Sikorra makes an interesting point. After thinking it over, though, I believe the writer’s answer is the kind H.L. Mencken had in mind when he said, “For every complex problem, there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.”

The first flaw in this argument is that current congestion

in Metro Vancouver is having multiple detrimental effects on our area right now. We need to reduce current congestion, not simply to prevent things getting even worse in the future.

Second, densification isn’t a new phenomenon — it has been happening in Metro Vancouver for years. As the letter writer points out, more than 50% of taxable properties in the Lower Mainland are already strata units. So for years developers have been paying DCCs and the tax base has been expanding. If densification hasn’t yet produced big surpluses for municipal governments (after paying for the additional services required by increasing population), why should this happen in the future?

Third, there are limits to the amount of DCCs that can be imposed on developers; after all, these costs are passed on to the buyers of the condos, and the price of housing in our city is already unaffordable for many.

A Grade 12 student at Heritage Woods secondary is one of six students in Canada to win a $2,500 Scotiabank Bright Future award — and he’s donating to a fundraiser tomorrow to help a family in need at the Port Moody school.

Areez Saleh is one of 12 youths from around the world to receive the award, which honours students engaged in volunteer work. Winners, who must complete 100 hours of volunteer work and submit an essay describing the effect of

help others from a very young age, working to alleviate poverty globally and locally. His volunteerism includes participating in and donating to the Aga Khan Foundation’s World Partnership Golf tournaments, Clothes for Kids drives, collecting sports uniforms and cleats to send overseas, organizing food drives and other initiatives at his school. Last summer, Saleh was also part of a Habitat for Humanity effort to build a home for a family in El Salvador.

W

hen Joe da Silva clicks in the chin strap on his bike helmet and pushes off for his 100-km Wheel 2 Heal ride on May 2, it will be as a changed man — many pounds lighter, much fitter and more like the high school jock he once was.

It wasn’t easy getting there.

Soon after leaving behind his track star high school days, da Silva picked up competitive cycling, racing at the old velodrome in Vancouver. But eventually, “regular life” took over. He married and he and his wife had a baby, and he pursued a busy sales career that had him traveling frequently across Canada and throughout B.C. Exercise fell off the radar, and restaurant meals helped da Silva pack on the pounds.

He was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2002 and later survived two cardiac episodes.

Da Silva’s doctor repeatedly cautioned him to lose weight, warnings the Port Coquitlam dad brushed off until a morning in September 2012.

“I woke up and said, ‘I gotta do something, this is ridiculous,’” da Silva recalled.

He joined a gym and hired a personal trainer. A year later, his diabetes was in full remission, likely adding a decade to da Silva’s life, his doctor told him.

“I had more energy than I did in my 20s,” da Silva said.

Then, when his father died of cancer, da Silva was gripped by a new sense of motivation, and despite not owning a bicycle or having ridden one in nearly 40 years, he signed up for the 250km Ride to Conquer Cancer from Vancouver to Seattle.

It was in shopping for a bike at Cap’s Westwood Cycle in PoCo that da Silva learned about Wheel 2 Heal, and

that’s near and dear to him. For an agonizing stretch between 1999 and 2001, da Silva was beset by a barrage of kidney stone attacks, with 22 in just one 15-month stretch, which made him a frequent visitor to ERH’s emergency room.

“For a while, they were my lifeline,” da Silva said, adding he’s happy to support the community hospital.

Carly Foster, the EFH Foundation’s director of events, said the seventh annual ride through the Tri-Cities will offer routes for all levels, whether it’s a flat tour on the PoCo Trail for 30 or 40 km, a challenging road ride of 65 or 100 km or the 15-km family ride. There are also free kids’ races for ages three to eight.

Registrations are already proving strong for this year, she said, and adult riders are encouraged to raise a minimum of $250 each; proceeds go to support the greatest needs at the hospital.

Female authors tell harrowing, uplifting stories in these books A GOOD READ KIMBERLEY CONSTABLE

A

s a reader, I gravitate towards non-fiction and lately, I’ve been choosing a lot of books by female writers. I wanted to share with you the best of my recent reads.

The main thing they have in common is that they are all women’s stories and voices, and I hope at least one of them will pique your curiosity.

A House in the Sky by Amanda Lindhout and Sara Corbett tells the truly harrowing story of Lindhout’s 15 months of captivity under the brutal watch of Islamist insurgents in Somalia. The travel bug bit Lindhout hard and early, and she saw journalism as way to see the world and tell stories that needed to be told. Little did she know that her personal story would end up being such a powerful and moving account of survival and forgiveness.

Lena Dunham is definitely having a moment in pop culture. As show-runner and star of HBO’s hit TV series Girls, the lines between Dunham and her character Hannah are often rather blurry. Not That Kind of Girl is Dunham’s chance to definitively tell her story or, as she puts it in the book’s subtitle “what’s she’s ‘learned.’” At times, this book is almost painfully honest, and this is rather fitting for someone from a notoriously open generation. Millennials will almost certainly relate to at least something in this book, and older folks could look here to learn more about how the younger set sees the world these days.

Speaking of millennials, the promising young writer Marina Keegan tapped into many universal themes with her book The Opposite of Loneliness. Tragically, Keegan died in a car accident a mere five days after graduating from Yale in 2012. With this sad context, “The Opposite of Loneliness” (her last essay for the Yale Daily News) went viral.

It then became the title essay for this touching posthumous collection of Keegan’s observations and explorations of life, relationships and other aspects of the human condition.

Graphic novelist Alison Bechdel recently won a MacArthur Foundation genius grant in recognition of her groundbreaking contributions to the memoir genre and the graphic storytelling format.

Her latest book is Are You My Mother?: A Comic Drama but I suggest starting with Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic.

Fun Home is a memoir of Bechdel’s childhood spent in her family’s funeral home. It focuses largely on her complicated relationship with her father, a third-generation funeral home director, high school English teacher and, as it turns out, a closeted homosexual.

Yes Please is beloved comedian and actress Amy Poehler’s answer to her best friend Tina Fey’s runaway hit book, Bossypants. While Yes Please is not as flat-out hilarious as Bossypants, it certainly has its own charms. Poehler discusses her career from her early years in comedy to the height of Hollywood stardom, where she now finds herself. What I wasn’t expecting were her fresh and funny takes on pregnancy, childbirth and motherhood.

The audiobook features a constellation of wonderful guest stars, so consider listening to this one instead of reading it.

I always find Roxane Gay’s online essays to be intelligent and thought-provoking, and her first essay collection, Bad Feminist, is no different. Gay tackles different aspects of subjects as varied as gender, sexuality, race, entertainment and politics all in her refreshingly honest and insightful voice.

While she is dismantling the many disturbing messages and damaging biases in our society and culture, Gay is not afraid to own up to her own shortcomings and guilty pleasures (such as an abiding love for all things Sweet Valley High).

Bad Feminist is a highly readable journey through Gay’s thoughts and interpretations of the crazy world around us.

I hope this recap of my recent reading journal has given you some food for thought and ideas for your next read.

Guide to Summer Activities CMFSC Teams Up with SHARE for After School Soccer Programs at Tri-Cities’ Schools Local Club Donating Resources to Make Soccer Accessible to Children from All Walks of Life Coquitlam Metro-Ford Soccer Club (CMFSC) is proud to announce that it will be partnering with SHARE Family and Community Services to provide After School Soccer Programs at two Tri-Cities Elementary schools, beginning January 2015. CMFSC will be sending nationally certified coaches, as well as soccer equipment, to Mountain View Elementary and Roy Stibbs Elementary Schools to assist SHARE in providing its invaluable After School programs to Coquitlam youngsters.

Evan Doornberg has been in acting classes at Coquitlam’s Dr. Charles Best secondary since Grade 9.

And, like last year when he played John Hale in The Crucible, the Grade 12 student will be taking on the lead role in the spring production.

The thing is, his character doesn’t do much but sit around and daydream.

But that’s okay with Doornberg. “I actually wanted the part because I didn’t have to sing or dance much,” Doornberg said with a laugh.

He portrays The Man in Chair in The Drowsy Chaperone, a musical that was recently done by students at Capilano University and

Trinity Western University.

Best is debuting it in School District 43, said drama teacher Brad Case.

Still, while Doornberg is the passive narrator in the dingy apartment, his 26 other cast mates set the stage alight two hours a night — for 10 shows this and next month — in the musical that includes gangsters and a whole lot of glamour.

Based on the book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar, with music and lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison, The Drowsy Chaperone is a parody of American musical comedy of the 1920s.

It zeros in on the middleaged man who tries to escape his blues by listening to his deceased mother’s record of her favourite musical, the fictional 1928 hit called The Drowsy

It starts with the wedding day of oil tycoon Robert Martin and Broadway star Janet Van De Graaff of the Follies. Plenty of well-heeled flapper guests are in attendance but there are also two gangsters disguised as pastry chefs, a Latin lover, an aviatrix and Van De Graaff’s alcoholic chaperone.

Case said the musical includes many talented students including Kelsie James (who is due to study acting at Sheridan College this fall) and Connor

Briggs, a Grade 11 student who already has television and commercial credits.

Also, the dozen or so students in the orchestra pit are being directed by music teacher Brent Hughes of Align Entertainment, which this year won an Ovation Award for its inaugural production, Shrek The Musical, and in February produced The Addams Family at the Michael J. Fox Theatre.

“We are one of the few schools to have a live orchestra for our show and it makes it makes all the difference,” Doornberg said.

One of Disney’s most cherished tales about a young mermaid who finds love with a prince will surface next month at a Port Moody high school.

And the actor playing the lead part of Ariel will herself be wading into deep waters later this year as a musical theatre undergrad in the U.S. Kaila Kask, who is also codirector of The Little Mermaid at Heritage Woods secondary, plans to study at the University of Arizona in Tucson.

“It’s like a dream come true,” said Kask, who has been with the Lindbjerg Academy of the Performing Arts in Coquitlam for a decade. “I just walked onto the campus and I knew this was where I wanted to be.

I wanted very much to be away from the Vancouver theatre

scene and start fresh.”

Kask, who recently appeared as Peggy Sawyer in Lindbjerg’s year-end show 42nd Street, dipped into the role of Ariel after the school wasn’t able to find anyone suitable to play the red-headed mermaid princess.

She is one of 40 Grade 9 to 12 students who signed up to be in the musical, an extracurricular in which they will receive an academic credit.

Based on the story by Hans Christian Anderson and popularized on film by Disney, The Little Mermaid follows 16-yearold Ariel and her best friend, Flounder, as they explore human existence and ignore warnings from her father King Triton, ruler of Atlantica, and his advisor Sebastian.

Ariel falls in love with the shipwrecked Prince Eric and makes a pact with the sea witch Ursula to transform her

into a human for three days to win his love. But the deal comes at a price: Ariel has no voice until their kiss.

Co-director Danica Kobayashi said the PG-rated musical appeals to audiencegoers of all ages, from little girls wanting a pampered royal life to dads on the brink of losing their daughter to marriage.

“It’s a fantastic show that many people can connect to,” she said, “and it’s a great visual spectacle, from the lights and costumes to the singing and dancing. There’s something for everyone.”

Hamlet for OK fest A much-abridged version of Hamlet will be presented

by Pinetree secondary students next week to prepare for an upcoming William Shakespeare festival.

The Coquitlam high school students in Natalee Fera’s class will bus to Summerland to showcase their 30-minute Hamlet at the 15th anniversary of the Rotary Good Will Shakespeare Festival.

Pinetree is one of 21 schools taking part in the May

7 to 9 fest and workshops, and one of two Metro Vancouver high schools.

Condensed by Richard Dixon, a retired Gleneagle secondary drama teacher, Pinetree’s Hamlet is set in the Dark Ages, with zombies and the Black Plague.

It’s not the first time Fera and her students have appeared at the Summerland fest. Last year, they presented Macbeth and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Meanwhile, to pay for costs for the weekend trip, the teen thespians will host a clothing drive on Sunday, April 26.

Residents can drop off their unwanted threads, shoes, bed and bath linens and accessories to the south side of the school between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The Coquitlam theatre group is calling for teens and young adults between the ages of 12 and 21 to be part of its Triple Threat teen summer camp, which runs July 20 to 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Mary Poppins will be staged twice on Saturday, July 25.

Meanwhile, Theatrix will also run its Act Up! camp for kids aged six to 12 wanting to learn acting skills as well as build confidence, awareness and comprehension skills through theatre games, improv and scene work.

Both camps will be held at Riverside secondary school in Port Coquitlam and instructed

A Coquitlam artist is the winner of the People’s Choice prize for this year’s Wearable Arts Awards competition.

Nicole Robson took the top prize — and a cheque for $1,000, courtesy of Fred Soofi of Pasta Polo — for her entry titled Little Black Dress.

The outfit will be on display at the Coquitlam eatery starting next month. Robson had previously won $300 in the recycling category of the biennial event in Port Moody.

In an email to The Tri-City News, Robson said it was her first time entering the competition. “My husband and I had just finished filming a movie at our house prior to the Wearable Arts submission deadline,” she wrote. “As the set was being cleaned up, I asked what was going to hap-

pen to all the crumpled black wrap (black aluminum foil like material). I was told is was going to be thrown out, and that was when the Little Black Dress was born. I salvaged what I could, played around with the material and came up with the design.”

Robson said she’s now preparing for the next Wearable Arts event, in 2017.

An A-list Hollywood actor who graduated from a Coquitlam high school will star in an HBO crime drama.

Taylor Kitsch plays Paul Woodrugh in the second season of KITSCH True Detective, which premiers June 21. The series, which originally featured Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, will also include Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell and Canadian actress Rachel McAdams.

Kitsch, who graduated from Gleneagle secondary school in 1999, has also appeared in Friday Night Lights on NBC and the movies X-Men Origins: Wolverine and John Carter.

TANGLED UP ON THE TURF

Storm-ing to semis in Moody

It was a perfect day on the pitch in Port Moody for the host Storm, as the girls U16 Metro Select team advanced to the semi-finals in the 2015 Coastal Cup. And it set up a challenge this weekend against a tough opponent.

Last weekend, following a first-round bye, the PoMo side defeated Delta Coastal Attack 5-0 in their quarter final match.

The Storm controlled play for most of the game and carried a commanding 3-0 lead into halftime on two goals from Emily Gomes and one from Hailey Counsell.

Delta pushed back in the second half and managed some good chances, including a number of free kicks near the Storm net, but Ella Sutton and the Storm defence were able to thwart the Delta attack to preserve the shutout.

Solidifying the win were goals by Abigail Schwartz and Maddie Low, who scored on a penalty kick after Gomes was fouled in the box.

The Storm finished the regular season on top of the U16 standings, earning them a number one seed in the Coastal Cup tournament and a birth in this year’s provincial championship.

This Saturday, April 25, at noon, the Storm play North Shore Renegades at Port Moody Town Centre in the semi-finals. It will be the locals’ chance for a bit of revenge on the Renegades, who handed PoMo their only loss of the season, a 2-0 defeat in January.

West’s 18 helps team to hoops all-star win A Terry Fox secondary school centre stood tall among the province’s best hoops players Sunday in Langley.

The 2015 B.C. Boys and Girls High School Basketball All-Star games were held Saturday at the Langley Events Centre.

And in the boys’ game, hosted in partnership with the BC High School Boys Basketball Association and featuring Team Taylor against Team Roberts, Fox’s Mike West led all scorers with 18 points as his squad, Team Taylor, prevailed 101-82. For the winning side, Taylor Brown of Holy Cross regional high school in Surrey scored 16 points was named player of the game for Team Taylor.

Other Tri-City players on Team Taylor were Cordell Parker of Port Moody’s Heritage Woods secondary and Jomari Reyes of Port Coquitlam’s Terry Fox Ravens.

TEAM TRACEY SMITH A Coquitlam Curling Club team took home some precious metal last week in Richmond.

Team Tracey Smith earned bronze at the Mainland Club Challenge, an end-of-season bonspiel of the top men’s and women’s recreational curling teams from across the Lower Mainland. Team Smith — made up of Smith, Terry Parent, Terri Evans and Marie Poitras — is the first women’s team from Coquitlam Curling Club to medal in this regional bonspiel.
