Rimbey residents speak out against new rules regarding grass clippings

Council was taken to task Monday by residents who wanted some answers regarding the newly imposed rule regarding grass clippings.

Earlier this spring, council announced residents would be asked to grasscyle their lawn clippings and to refrain from putting them in their garbage.

They were told grass clippings will not be picked up by the contractor nor will they be accepted at the recycle facility, although tree clippings and dry yard waste can be dropped off there all summer and will be burned in the approved pits.

The announcement caused dissention among several Rimbey residents, and the gallery, at Monday’s meeting, was full of disgruntled taxpayers.

Malcolm Turner, who moved to Rimbey when he retired from the oil patch, said he is very happy here

and enjoys living in the community. He is not overly concerned about the new ruling regarding grass clippings as he mulches his grass.

However, he is concerned for others who do not have access to a mulcher.

“This is a town of elderly people,” he said.

Turner believes the unmulched grass clippings and yard waste will become untidy and end up on the road.

Turner also questioned council as to why they sprung the decision to grasscycle on taxpayers at the last minute and did not give them ample warning.

Rimbey ratepayer Jan Boyarzin said she is frustrated with council’s decision regarding grass clippings and yard waste. She is worried about how she will get the yard waste to the recycle centre, herself.

“I’m very frustrated that we have to take it there ourselves,” she said. “I’m really annoyed that a service like

that was taken away and yet council is willing to spend $5,000 on a midway for a weekend of fun.”

In her report to council acting CAO Donna Tona said it is illegal to collect and compost grass clippings unless they are pure grass and Rimbey’s collection, including grass clippings gathered last summer, was not pure.

She said that in the past, grass clippings were taken to the transfer station and dumped onto eight acres of land which is next to the municipal well, a county well and the town’s water supply.

“The transfer station attendant commented numerous times the bags were filled with dog and cat and rabbit excrement,” she said.

She said the former

town administration had been told by Alberta Health that E-coli contamination was a concern.

However the concern was not addressed and the practice continued until council agreed to accept a recommendation from administration this winter during budget deliberations that the practice was not appropriate or cost effective.

Rimbey resident Gayle Rondeel, who was present at the council meeting, suggested moving the grass clippings to the airport.

“There are no water systems out there,” she said.

Mayor Rick Pankiw said that would be a cost prohibitive move. However, he did not rule out other possibilities.

“We are still looking at alternatives,” he said.

I want to try again.

Weird!

I called my nephew who is the best golfer ever and whose love of the game is truly contagious. Without even trying, he makes golf fun, not only for himself, but also for whoever is lucky enough to be with him.

I decided if I was going to golf badly and hang my head in shame, I wanted to be with him, because he would still say something like, “thanks for coming, Treen, we’ll do it again soon.” He would not mention the word ‘loser’.

He said (and I quote) “I would love to golf with

you” and I was immediately so excited, I forgot to finish unloading the dishwasher.

“Yes,” I shouted! “I love golfing.”

Of course, I had to find my clubs, which had long been buried in a corner of the garage, forgotten, neglected and covered with a layer of dust.

I arrived at the golf course, breathless and slightly early, surprising everyone, including me.

And it turned out there were four of us; my nephew, his son, and his dad – three generations of darn good golfers. And then, bringing up the rear, golfing from

the ladies tees, running and slightly breathless and trying to keep up.

There was me!

I had some good shots and some bad shots, but, overall, it was the best game ever and it had nothing to do with the score, really.

It was the cool guys I was out with.

True, their golf shots were awesome, but that wasn’t what made them winners in my eyes.

It was the way they made me feel like a winner.

Therefore, I have decided I will not be a quitter, either.

And, I will be back!

fairway, disappearing into a green that is barely visible to the naked eye. I have imagined me on the golf course, producing deadly chips and stellar putts with a simple flick of the wrist.

In my mind I have made impossible shots, out of the trees, out of the sand and out of other places where the average golfer would dare not tread.

Yes. I have worked hard.

Taken lessons. Practiced lots.

And then I have dreamed that I was good; very, very good!

The end result!

I became discouraged, disillusioned and, decided to follow up on the worstcase scenario and my worst game, ever.

I gave up golf!

Last year, I went out only once with my sevenyear-old granddaughter.

And to prove my point, she beat me.

But, as we all know, hope springs eternal and when golf season rolled around this year, I had this ridiculous thought.

I had the chance to hear Margaret Atwood speak at the Red Deer College main stage after the Easter weekend. Atwood is a Canadian author and a literary icon.

A few years ago she was speaking in Calgary during the annual Wordfest—but I was more preoccupied with Chuck Palahniuk’s talk than I was attending Atwood’s at that time.

She gave two separate talks at RDC for the Perspectives Speakers Series: one on the creative process during the evening of April 6th and one on the artist’s role in society during the

morning of April 7th. The evening speech was for the adults (because you had to pay to get in) and the following morning’s speech was for the kids (students got in at no charge). I attended both talks and claim to be neither an adult nor a kid.

I had spent too much time during the evening of the 6th with a film student in the Far Side and was well on my way to becoming a cartoon character for the evening. My ticket was for a seat in the second last row because I had only bought my ticket the day before.

After Atwood’s evening speech, the audience was given a chance to ask her questions from (one of the two) microphones positioned near the centers of staircases on either side of the audience section. I wanted to get my mitts on a microphone; and instead of stumbling over a whole row of people to get to the isle, I decided to climb over the back of my seat into the empty last row.

tomatically flips up when no one is sitting in it acted like a Chinese finger trap on my right boot. I tried to climb cover stealthy, but my right foot slipped between the seat bottom and the seat back.

When I attempted to pull my leg free, the engineering of the stadium seat just clamped tighter on my boot. After I struggled like a hound dog caught in a bear trap, I finally made it free from my seat and got to the microphone.

My heart was pumping madly when I asked Atwood “… if she considered herself and/or her work to be immortal?” My question was intended to be philosophical, but Atwood gave me a cut and dry left brained sort of answer, “… no.” Her answer disappointed me for the remainder of the evening; Atwood’s answer was not what I wanted to hear from a self-actualized individual.

She did, however, extrapolate greatly before giving the two letter word response. After mulling over her answer and my re-examining my question I feel that Atwood,

regardless, is still striving for her own immortality with her participation with the Future Library Project—which she commented on later during the question period.

Margaret Atwood has prepared a book manuscript for the Future Library Project. Essentially the unpublished pages get locked in a box, set to Oslo, Norway, and nobody gets to read the book till after a century has past. The book will be printed in an anthology with the paper harvested from the trees which supposedly got planted, in the Nordmarka forest, at the beginning of Katie Paterson’s public art project in 2014. Allegedly each year over the next hundred years, a new writer will be invited to stash away his or her manuscript for future publication.

The Future Library Project sounds pretty cool.

Maybe Rimbey’s own Triana Hohn will have a manuscript for the next century for readers.

After Atwood’s evening speech, I returned to the Far

Side only to arrive for her morning talk to the student body feeling like a dried out sponge.

In the wake of a pending provincial election, Atwood enlightened the students at RDC with a new approach to solving social problems—collaboration. Whoa.

Essentially, Atwood suggested that instead of assembling a problem-solving-group from the members of one specific faculty, that the group needs to incorporate it members from diverse areas.

Get a lawyer; get a English professor; get a mechanic; get SpongeBob; get a school teacher; get a psychologist; get a barista; get a carpenter; get a student; get a senior; get males; get females; get everyone together to solve whatever problem is at hand.

Atwood warns that this process takes a little longer to unfold, but the flexibility of thought of the hybrid group would be most excellent.

I feel like I need to read more of Margaret Atwood’s books—she sounds like a smart old bird.

Thomas Anglin, a science student and Brina Wengberg, a music major at the Augustana Campus will be two of the perform-

ers taking part in a concert of music inspired by the poetry of the Bard of Avon.

The concert is slated for Saturday, April 25 at 7:30 p.m. at the Rimbey United Church (4931 - 51 Avenue).

Rumours that council is going to build its own impound yard at the public works yard may be unfounded.

“It’s not even on my radar,” said interim CAO Donna Tona. “To date there has been no decision and no direction given to administration.”

The issue was brought up during an open mike session at the April 13 meeting

by Rimbey resident Helen Coers.

“Have the RCMP been contacted?” she questioned.

“Has there been any discus-

sion?”

Tona noted the RCMP do keep some of their equipment there and there have been some initial talks about fencing the property for security, but nothing has been determined.

“It would be another revenue source for the town of Rimbey,” said Mayor Rick Pankiw.

“The matter was discussed at a committee of the whole meeting,” Tona said, later. “That is the purpose of the committee of the whole meetings; simply to discuss issues. The purpose of administration is to look at all systems and processes within

The minutes of the meeting, which are posted on-line, state Coun. Jack Webb suggested that the town could increase revenue by having its own impound yard.

In the January minutes, Sgt. Koller indicated there is a need for an impound yard.

He noted he has recently had two 30-day vehicle seizures and he has had difficulty finding an impound lot when needed.

Taxpayers’ dollars will be wasted on upcoming election Dear Editor, Alberta is last to join the ‘have not’ provinces.

Why? Albertans will no longer have to pay equalization payments.

The Progressive Conservative party has put Albertans billions of dollars in debt.

Albertans paid $18.9 billion dollars in equalization payments in 2011 (latest statistic from Finance, Alberta).

That is $5,012 per person or $20,048 for a family of four.

What family couldn’t use this money now?

With 19 billion dollars a year, Alberta will have no increase in taxes and money to spare if Prentice and his government is defeated in the budget election.

Prentice is relying on non-voters to stay home.

Full house for volunteer celebration held at community centre

The volunteer celebration night, held at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre April 13, featured a great mix of good food, excellent company, government officials, entertainment and, of course, volunteers.

Volunteers were truly the highlight of the evening, and table after table was soon filled with these individuals who took time to be come and enjoy a delicious meal and be recognized for a job well done.

“We were very happy with the response from the community,” said Katherine Winters, volunteer services coordinator for Rimbey FCSS. The master of ceremonies for the evening was Ponoka County Reeve Paul McLauchlin who greeted volunteers for the 17th annual volunteer dinner, noting these individuals truly are “the glue that keeps the community together.”

Guest speaker Blaine Calkins congratulated the volunteers, noting his grandmother, Bessie Calkins was a wonderful example of a volunteer.

He also commended former hockey and ball coaches and cadet leaders who had provided support and encouragement to him while he was growing up.

“Volunteers are paid in smiles and appreciation,” he said.

MLA Joe Anglin said volunteers humble him.

“Congratulations. This is your night,” he said.

McLaughlin read a letter from Lynn Gray, Alberta Health Services, volunteer resources manager who sent her regrets at not being able to attend.

She said Rimbey is lucky to have such outstanding, dedicated volunteers.

“Volunteers reach out to so many groups and organizations helping others in an altruistic manner. You are to be commended for sharing your time, talent, knowledge and enthusiasm and for making Rimbey such a great place to live. No matter what role or roles you perform you are a valued member of our health care team.”

In her letter, Gray gave special recognition to Laine Dahms, AHS coordinator for volunteer resources in Rimbey, for her dedication and commitment to ensuring volunteers are engaged, challenged and provided a rewarding volunteer experience.

She also thanked the organizing committee for their work throughout the year to make the event possible.

“Your collaborative efforts to hosting a community wide event are something that other communities in our central zone are catching on to, as they see the success that Rimbey has accomplished over the years.”

The Rimbey gymnastics club entertained later and The Forget-Me-Nots, Ev Prins and Bruce Tona, provided musical entertainment.

Midway to be revived

Rimbey town council wants to see the midway come back to town in conjunction with the rodeo.

At its Mon. April 13 meeting, council unanimously agreed to provide the agricultural board with a $5,000 grant to serve as a guarantee for the midway company.

Coun. Jack Webb said having the midway come to town is a win/win for everyone.

“When we used to have the midway come to town, was a very busy day,” he said, later, noting the spinoffs for all the businesses is positive.

He stressed that the $5,000 is only a guarantee to bring the midway to town and the council could get its initial investment back if the weather is favorable.

However, he noted that the town would get at least a portion of the $5,000 back, depending on the sale of rides.

In her report to council, interim chief administrative officer, Donna Tona said the Rimbey Rodeo has always been a celebration within the town of its agricultural roots and an opportunity to showcase the heritage of farming and ranching.

“It is a chance for businesses to dress up their businesses, dress western and take in the festivities of the event,” she said. “It is a chance for families to have a great weekend with each other.”

She said Rimbey has had a midway in the past, however, inclement weather events have prompted midways to demand guarantees.

“It does bring people to the town and definitely helps the rodeo,’ said Coun.

A fundraiser, held April 10 at Forshee Community Hall, to raise funds for a worthy cause was a huge success with plenty of ‘wow’ moments too special to be forgotten. “It was a great success,� said Sandra VonHollen from Game on Outdoors. “It exceeded our expectations.�

Game On Outdoors laid out the red carpet for their guests of honor, the youngsters who they sent to Cenalta Camp and those who were featured on a segment of The Dimestore Fishermen, a television fishing program. “The kids actually walked on the red carpet,� said VonHollen. ‘That was

very cool for them. They were very excited.�

Prior to coming to the event and walking the red carpet, the youngsters were picked up in a limo outside The Game On store.

Kole MacAusland, Clayton VonHollen and Garrett and McCoy Groves were featured on a segment of The Dimestore Fishermen. Kaleb Simpson, Isaiah Ukranichuk and Brad Zotich were filmed while at the Cenalta Camp.

Spring clean up available for Rimbey residents

Rimbey residents now have an opportunity to dispose of yard waste at the recycle station.

A bin was set up at last Wednesday, April 15 and will remain there for about three weeks, said public works director Rick Schmidt.

Currently under the direction of Dr. John Wiebe, The Augustana Choir is considered to be one of Western Canada’s most successful undergraduate university choirs. The Augustana Choir studies and performs a wide variety of quality choral literature drawn from all musical periods and styles, including recent compositions and commissions.

An active touring tradition has led The Augustana Choir to perform satisfying concerts for local, national, and international audiences.

In May 2014, The Augustana Choir was honoured to accept an invitation to perform at Podium 2014, the national choral conference of Choral Canada.

This concert is part of a local recruitment tour that will see the choir also perform in Bashaw, Camrose, Athabasca, Fort McMurray and Edmonton.

Interim CAO Donna Tona said the bin has been obtained from Nikirk Bros.

Contracting. She is grateful that Nikirk Bros. has not charged the town for the use of the bin. The only costs will be for hauling the yard waste to Stickland Farms in Penhold which will run ap-

proximately $1,200 a week.

Tipping charges have yet to be determined.

“My very sincere thanks to Nikirks,” she said. “They are being good corporate citizens to help the residents of Rimbey out in this way.”

Tree clippings and dry yard waste can still be dropped off all summer and will be burned in the ap-

proved pits.

Residents who have health, mobility or disability challenges can phone the town to register to have their yard waste picked up during fall and spring cleanup, Tona said.

“This service would entitle residents to register in confidence and the town would provide them with a special tag identifying the

fact they have registered to have their yard waste picked up and placed in the bins.”

The town will use criteria established by Rimbey FCSS to determine if an individual qualifies for town pick up.

Residents are also being encouraged to help their neighbour if they can’t move their spring yard

waste.

The regular hours of the recycle facility as of April 15 is Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The facility accepts residential cardboard, plastics, tin and paper products.

Clean wood less than six feet in length and one foot in diameter and tagged de-commissioned fridges are also accepted.

MLA Anglin praised by past president of Alberta party Dear Editor, On May 5, voters in RimbeyRocky Mountain House-Sundre have a unique opportunity to influence politics in this province that other ridings simply don’t have.

With Joe Anglin running as an Independent, voters can send a message that would resonate around the province. Joe stood up vocally for landowners’ property rights when the PCs tried to strip us of those rights.

During that fight, Joe exposed the government’s use of private investigators to spy on citizen groups.

He was the first independent MLA to get a private member’s bill passed in 91 years and has a history of cooperating with other parties for the good

of the province rather than acting for partisan party benefit. Acting in the best interests of Albertans has sometimes got Joe in trouble. His falling out with the WRP last year had more to do with the rot inside that party than it had with Joe’s ethics.

I’ve heard it said that Joe jumps from party to party. I’ve known Joe for a long time and I’d say something quite different. Joe’s ethics don’t jump; they’re consistent. The problem is that some political parties are light on ethics. The masters of those parties haven’t liked it when Joe has stood up for his constituents ahead of party interests.

The voters of Rimbey-RockyMountain House-Sundre have an

opportunity to elect an MLA that will stand up for the best interests of constituents. With this election being so close, it may be that an independent may hold a great deal of sway. The citizens of this riding have a choice: they can vote for the PCs and elect a compliant MLA to sit on the back benches; they can elect an MLA from the WRP that still doesn’t really know if they’re just PCs in wolves clothing; or they can elect a man whose principals are written on his sleeve and who will stand up to parties for the good of this constituents and the good of the Province of Alberta.

Wildrose leader Brian Jean drops by Rimbey area farm

Wildrose leader Brian Jean and MLA candidate for the Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre riding Jason Nixon were warmly received last Tuesday when they stopped by the Kriz farm east of Rimbey.

About 30 people, who appeared to be staunch Wildrose supporters, gathered inside a huge Quonset on the farm to listen to Jean, who climbed aboard a large tractor to deliver his speech.

The tractor certainly seemed a fitting stage for the 52-year-old leader who waxed eloquent about the importance of rural Alberta.

“I have worked on farms for money,” he said.

“I do understand the chal-

lenges you face. The PCs have ignored rural Alberta for too long.”

Jean stressed that he did not believe in debt and was ready to take the PCs down.

“I do keep my word,” he said, as he addressed an audience who seemed to be made up of a mix of farmers, retired professionals and oil workers. “And one thing I can concentrate on is taking out the PC party.”

While he touted the Wildrose party line, he was quick to denounce former leader Danielle Smith for crossing the floor.

His emphatic statement that he was not and never would be a floor crosser received a round of applause.

“We were abandoned by this leader (Danielle Smith),” he said. “I am not

a floor crosser and I would never be a floor crosser.”

Lowering taxes is high on the Wildrose’s list of priorities, he said.

“We trust you to spend your money better than we can.”

Cutting high paying administration jobs in health care and education to provide more efficient systems, balancing the budget, improved transparency and a greater focus on rural Alberta are all part of Wildrose’s plan for the province, said Jean.

Geri Lyons, who attended the event with her husband, Larry said she was hopeful for the future of the Wildrose party.

“We need new ideas, someone with a backbone to fight for a new way.”

Kudos to mini stockcar volunteers who encourage and support youth

Where are the youth hanging out this summer?

Thanks to Rick and Don Wark a few more youth will be heading down to Central Alberta Raceways this summer to try out some dirt oval racing.

Rick and Don have helped put a few youth behind the wheel of a mini stockcar over the past few

years, our son being one of them.

This year we have more than half a dozen youth registered to race so far and they start at 13-years-old.

One of the dads, Darren Berdahl, has decided to sponsor the class, so they will be known as the Rimbey Hellbound Mini Stocks.

fordable, although the kids will have to do odd jobs to help pay for the part of the cost.

It isn’t for everyone, but I can tell you, I felt pretty happy when my son walked up to me after his first afternoon of racing with a smile that made me realize it something he would develop a passion for.

Cost for racing for that day was cheaper than going to the Go Karts for an afternoon.

We were given the opportunity by Rick and Don and we appreciate it so much we are volunteering

to help them get more kids involved.

A couple of Fridays ago when there was no school, instead of sitting down in front of a television or computer the youth all got together and proceeded to help their fellow racers get everything taken off of one of the racer’s car as it has to be only the shell and wiring left.

Some of these youth hadn’t even sat in their own car yet, but they worked together to help someone else.

Roll cage, safety seat and a few other critical

safety features were necessary. They had some adult supervision but for the most part these youth stripped the car down in about three hours.

These youth aren’t just put into a car. They will have a training day or two to get comfortable with being behind the wheel before their first race day.

Learning what the different coloured flags mean, getting the feel of their car, relaxing and learning to breathe while being in the middle of the rest of the racers will be part of the training.

There are a few that

have already been racing so they will help the new guys with their prerace jitters.

It is with broken hearts that our family announces that our beloved mother and grandmother, Anne Mary Frey of Rimbey, Alberta, passed away very suddenly and unexpectedly at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Sunday, April 12, 2015 at the age of 78 years with her only daughter, Tammy by her side.

Left to cherish Anne’s memory is her daughter, Tammy (Mark) Grundy of Rimbey; and her treasured grandchildren: Alex (Karen) Grundy of Cochrane; Logan Grundy of Rimbey; and Vanessa (Wyatt) Robinson of Blackfalds. She will also be sadly missed by her siblings, many nieces and nephews, and a host of close friends.

Anne was predeceased by her life-time love, Dawayne Aldrich in 2013, her parents, two brothers, and one sister.

A Memorial Service in Celebration of Anne’s Life will be held at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, Rimbey on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. with Vivian Lapointe-Longman presiding. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Theresa of the Child Jesus Catholic Church, Whitelaw, Alberta on Friday, April 24, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. with the Reverend Father Louis Saldanha, Celebrant. Interment will follow in the Whitelaw Cemetery, Whitelaw, Alberta. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Anne’s Memory may be made directly to the charity of one’s choice. Gordon McFadyen died peacefully at home at the age of 57 after a brief illness. He is lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his beloved wife, Kim, his children Kevin (Danielle) and Shauna (Ken), Kim’s children Katrina (Vince) and Kerry, grandchildren Catherine, Amber, and William, siblings Donna (Rob), Barb (Ron), Brian (Doris), and Sheri (Rod), his nieces and nephews, and so many amazing friends.

Gordon will be remembered for the way he helped people transform their lives through his home renovation business, Interior Transformations, dedication to his church family and providing pastoral care at the U of A hospital. He was a passionate adventurer -- backpacker, dancer, music lover, wine connoisseur, and life-long learner, especially at Naramata Centre of the United Church. He will be remembered for his gracious hospitality and for being a thoughtful, compassionate listener. A celebration of Gordon’s life was held Wednesday, April 15, 2015, at Southminster-Steinhauer United Church. Constance “Connie” Amelia Elizabeth Simpson of Red Deer, Alberta passed away in her father’s loving arms on Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at the age of 32 years.

Connie will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her beloved parents, John and Kate Simpson of Hoadley; her boyfriend, Nathan Lee of Red Deer; her brother, Jason Simpson of Calgary; as well as her nephews: Aaron Tabin of Edmonton; and Dwayne Bourassa of Manitoba; her nieces: Laura (Logan) Vaine of Red Deer; Madeline Simpson and Mary Simpson, both of Hoadley; and Jaylynn Simpson of Sundre; her great nephew, Dane Bourassa of Manitoba; and her great niece, Eva Vaine of Red Deer. She will also be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her aunts: Debby (Pat) Hanley and Shelley Simpson, both of New Brunswick; her uncles: Mike (Lori) Cusack of New Brunswick; Larry Forsythe of Dickson, Alberta; and Lawrence Forsythe of Red Deer; her great aunts: Maddie Forgrave and Shirley Barton; and her great uncle, Dave Hawkes, all of New Brunswick; in addition to numerous cousins and many friends.

It is with great sadness the family of Gordon (Gord) Russell Reaugh of Sylvan Lake, Alberta and formerly of Rimbey, announces his sudden passing at Quartzsite, Arizona on March 14, 2015 at the age of 59 years. Gord was born on November 24, 1955 to Melvin (Mel) and Margaret (Eleanor) Reaugh. Gord married Joanne Rude and together they had two sons, Devin and Garrett.

Entering the “Oil Patch” after High School, Gord worked first in the seismic industry and then entered the oil and gas production sector, working in the Rimbey area and Northern British Columbia. Later, after setting up his own consulting firm, Right Track Oilfield Services Ltd., Gord worked on numerous oilfield construction projects as manager/supervisor. His career in the petroleum industry spanned 40 years.

In the oil and gas industry, Gord was well respected for his dedication to detail, fairness and respect for colleagues and workers and his ability to “consistently deliver results within time and budget expectations”.

Predeceased in death by his parents, Gord is survived by his beloved sons, Devin and Garrett and one grandson Dylan. Gord also leaves to mourn, his life partner Ellen Robertson of Sylvan Lake, Alberta, two sisters, Marilee Fath and her son Ryan, and Joanne (Garry) Marek and their children, Michael and Morgan, numerous other nieces and nephews and many close friends.

Gord enjoyed many outdoor activities such as snowmobiling, camping, fishing.

Quadding and motorcycling.

A memorial service and celebration of Gord’s life will be held from the Forshee Hall in Forshee, Alberta on Saturday May 2, 2015 at 2:00 PM. If friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the SPCA 4505-77 Street Red Deer, AB T4P 2J1.

The Bricks 4 Kidz program was again offered in Bentley and ran for six weeks ending on April 20. Seventeen 8-10 year olds registered for it through Bentley Community Services under the FCSS mandate.

The hands-on sessions, held after school in the Bentley elementary library, start off with a designated project with step-by-step instructions from a booklet that often incorporates a motor and moving parts, and end with a free-time challenge the ‘builders’ must solve on their own.

Instructors from the Red Deer program take turns going out into communities to oversee the program. Themes introduce concepts of engineering, architecture and mechanics.

The program in Bentley was graciously subsidized this time by Friends of the Lacombe Outsiders 4-H Club bringing the individual cost per registrant way down.

Barb Carson, Bentley Community Services manager, says the program offers so much more than recreation and just building with Lego. “It gives kids a chance to socialize with a different group and make new friends. They learn to problem solve, work in pairs and groups and help each other, and make a different connection.”

Home-schooled children or those that live in Bentley but attend a different school find it particularly helpful to get involved with others in their community.

Carson says she already has been asked to run the program in Bentley again, maybe in the fall, or for a different age group.

Reader upset about premier’s mandate Dear Editor, I am writing in regards to our premier’s comment about his mandate.

This worries me as he has no regard for the only thing that allows him and his party to be elected and that is the BNA Act. People shot down the Meech Lake Accord and also Mr. T’s Charter. The Supreme Court ruled when provinces challenged the Charter in 1980, stating that it was only a Bill of Rights equal to the Canadian Bill of Rights or the Alberta Bill of Rights. That it, in no way, added to or gave away rights or traded rights of the BNA Act. They also stated that Canada has never been legally federated and that we only have a constitution by tradition and convention.

So now we have a party in power that

totally ignores the document that allows them to be elected and is as an admirality order and has to be adhered to, to the letter of the law.

So how can one have a mandate that is not within the jurisdiction? Do they think they can just make legislation on anything they want and it automatically changes the BNA Act? Well, it’s not our jurisdiction but we will call it a mandate and all will be okay because it was what we got elected on? People need to wake up and demand that the law be obeyed and they remain in their jurisdiction. One option is a class action lawsuit and in it demanding things not within the law be removed and property rights reinstated and that taxes or fees that are not within the law be removed.
