Searle’s Shoes boasts a long, storied history Renée Andor SPECIAL TO THE RECORD

The Newnes family is proud to own a very longstanding downtown Courtenay business — Searle’s Shoes.

“It’s quite an honour,” says Catherine. “To carry on a tradition is so important to keeping a community whole...”

Husband Derek adds: “If you look around town, there are not a lot of businesses that have (that history).”

According to Searle’s Shoes’ website, the shoe store first opened in 1918 when it was a shoe repair shop and owner Jas E. Aston decided to bring in a small stock of shoes. The business grew and evolved, changing hands a few times, until its namesake A.T. Searle purchased it in 1929.

Archie Welsh and Sid Wil-

liams bought the business in the early 1950s and Freddy Pisto joined as a partner a few years later. Welsh and Williams retired in the 1960s and Neil Woodrow and Larry Holmes came on as partners with Pisto, until Pisto sold the business to Woodrow in 1973.

Woodrow was ready to retire in 1993 and was closing the store when Derek and Catherine bought the business from him in early 1994.

Derek already had nearly 25 years of experience working in the shoe industry at Woodward’s department stores in B.C. and Alberta, and was able to quickly get the business back up and running.

Derek and Catherine considered changing the name when they bought the business, but because Searle’s Shoes was already a well-known icon

Love of sewing makes MeMe’s a perfect fit Renée Andor SPECIAL TO THE RECORD

MeMe’s Alteration & Creation Boutique started as a friendship formed over a shared love for sewing.

Nina Dibdin and Judi Fox met several years ago while working as seamstresses at local menswear stores in Courtenay. They became fast friends, and eventually started discussing the idea of opening their own business.

“This has been an idea and a dream for a couple of years,” said Fox, with Dibdin chipping in the idea was discussed, “over coffee, for five years at least.”

MeMe’s opened its doors in November and advertising so far has been via word-ofmouth.

“When people come in here and they get their stuff they’re just so pleased,” said Fox. “They always say, ‘I’m going to tell my friends,’ which is nice.”

Dibdin and Fox have been sewing since they were children, making clothes for their dolls, then later for themselves and, later still, for their children.

Altering a garment to achieve the perfect fit for a client is something they find highly rewarding.

“I think we’re both that type of person that is caring, wants to help people, and this is a way that we get to do what we like and it makes people happy, and you feel like you’re contributing something,” said Fox. “To have an ability to do something for somebody, and boost their self esteem and

Eureka Clubhouse provides safety and support Renée Andor SPECIAL TO THE RECORD

Eureka Support Society not only exists to offer support services to Comox Valley adults with mental illness, it also provides a safe place for them.

“It’s a good meeting place,” society executive director Christopher Bate says of Eureka Clubhouse. “There’s no judgement here. If people are having a bad day, having a lot of symptoms or something, it’s OK to be here like that, whereas in the public sometimes it’s not.”

Located at 280 Fourth St. in Courtenay, the Clubhouse provides a central location for members to access Eureka’s resources, which include educational, vocational, social and recreational supports.

The Clubhouse features a

selection of lounge areas, and Bate says many members simply spend time socializing with friends there.

Eureka helps members find work, offering support with resume writing and interview skills, for example. The Clubhouse also employs 13 members.

Activities like swimming programs, pottery workshops, stained glass workshops, art classes and cooking and nutrition courses, are regularly offered to members.

The Clubhouse features a workshop in the back for woodworking. There’s a gift shop in the front, too, where member-made crafts are sold, and with the great majority of the profit going to those who made them.

Smoke and time are key ingredients to quality barbecued food, according to Richard Vilus, and the food he serves at Great Island Barbecue shows he knows what he’s talking about.

“Good barbecue is all about cooking things with smoke and very slowly,” he says. “The ribs that we do here, both beef and pork ribs are in my smoker for 4.5 to five hours...

And the briskets and pork butts are in there for between 14 and 18 hours depending on the size of them.”

I didn’t try the ribs.

But, those hours that went into smoking the pork butt for the pulled pork sandwich were certainly worth the time; it was the best I’ve ever had. The meat was incredibly tender, and the house-made bourbon barbecue sauce gave a sweet and tangy kick.

The house-made sides were all fantastic, too. The cornbread was fluffy, the coleslaw was crispy and light-tasting with the right amount of zip and the baked beans had a wonderful smoky flavour.

I also tried the nachos, a recent addition to the menu, and they were loaded with barbecue beef brisket, Anaheim peppers and cheese, with the barbecue flavour creating a bit of a twist on traditional nachos. It worked well.

Finally, I tried the onion rings, which were out of this world. Again, Great Island Barbecue put a twist on typical and added cornmeal to the batter, giving extra crunch, without as much grease as normal.

The atmosphere was relaxed with blues playing in the background, local art on the walls and large paper towel rolls on the tables to take care of all the sauce that’s involved in barbecued food.
