Paddleboarding

If you saw Alicia La Rue on a paddleboard you’d never believe she only picked up a board three years ago.

“I got into it because of kiteboarding. When it’s not windy, it’s nice to go out and just cruise around,” La Rue said. “There’s nothing better than seeing a sunset on your standup paddleboard. It’s freaking awesome.”

A native Californian, La Rue moved to the Alberni Valley last fall by way of Sooke, under the urging of friend Sandra Gentleman. A former competitive skier and graphic artist, La Rue and Gentleman

It’s freaking awesome.” knew each other through the kiteboarding community; La Rue used to visit the Alberni Valley for its kiteboarding opportunities.

Stand up paddleboarding, or ‘SUPing’ as the enthusiasts call it, is the perfect entry watersport, La Rue said.

“You can take it in so many ways. You can just cruise around, check out nature and just enjoy it or if you

want to go more intense, you can get a racing board.”

And unlike other water sports, it’s easy to go solo.

“I’ve taken this out by myself so many times and that’s what I really like about it—it gets you out on the water.”

While on a canoe or a kayak you’re limited to sitting, a SUP doesn’t limit you to standing.

“I like the versatility of it. You can sit down like it’s a canoe or you can stand up and have more of a surf experience.”

Lightweight enough to set up and carry on your own, paddleboards are a frequent traveller’s dream.

“You just put it on the top of your car. Go out camping and bring it with you. It’s a great portable boat.”

The options are endless with a SUP. Locally La Rue recommends going to the Island Rhino Surf Shop and checking out a board in person.

“They’ve got tons of selection there for different SUPS. Even if you’re not going to buy one there, go and talk to them and they’ll give you a good idea of the right type of board for what you want.”

Most importantly, La Rue said, is the ability to do what you want.

“Sometimes I’ll just sit down on my board and play my flute.”

Spring into Fashion This season’s colours celebrate a ‘70s revival

It’s 70s revival time this spring and there’s more than ever to choose from in the stores. “The 70s are really, really big. Flowy dresses, maxi dresses, maxi skirts, fringe,� said Rebecca Palmer, fashion merchandiser at Gayle’s Fashions in Port Alberni.

The key to the look is flowy, loose, “away from the body, hippy chic,� Palmer said.

If you’re worried about going flowy all over, “maxi skirts paired with little shorter tops is a big trend.�

In sharp contrast, military-inspired styles are also making a comeback. “Anything with a subtle camo, anything with epaulets.�

If you want to go really low-key, even a khaki coloured jacket is a subtle nod to the military trend.

Perhaps most appropriate in a waterfront community is the nautical trend. “Nautical is always huge for spring,� Palmer said, but added that this time, it’s back with a new twist. “All-over anchor prints are really in for spring.�

If you’re not ready to get quite that nautical, Palmer said the classic navy and white stripes are always a safe choice. “You can do it anywhere: purse, scarves, hats, jackets.�

While with stores brimming to the max with every possible spring trend it’s tempting to go all out, Palmer said its best to start out with just one piece.

“If you want to do nautical, go out and get one top that’s navyand-white stripes.

Trends are fleeting so “just try and find one piece.

“Trends come and go, so you don’t get a whole closet filled with trends and then next season end up being out of style.”

And most importantly, go for what works for you, both lifestyle and body type wise.

“Make sure when you’re shopping you’re shopping for what looks good on you and what makes you comfortable.”

She does caution that unless you want to look like an oldtime sailor or prisoner, “just a pop of it is probably good, you don’t want to go all out in it.”

If anchors aren’t your style, you can get in on the all-over print trend in a different way.

“Polka dots are really big.”

From the classic black and white to a slightly more bold red and white, it’s an easy look to pull together.

The best way to try out this look, Palmer said, is as an accent.

“Stick to one piece polka dot, the other piece solid or a polka dot handbag if you’re doing a black dress.”

As the weather warms up, white, flowy little dresses are an easy-breezy way to stay on trend.

Raise your pots up off the ground using ceramic pot feet, above, or on a roller so you can easily move the pot.

Spring has sprung on the West Coast and people in the Alberni Valley are satisfying their itch to get gardening already. Many are mulching their garden beds and preparing them for growing annuals and perennials, flowers and vegetables.

But what do you do if you live in a condo or apartment and don’t have a garden bed?

Containers offer flexibility in all sorts of ways, says Helgie Naesgaard, of Naesgaard’s Farm Market on River Road.

The market is renowned for its colourful display of ceramic containers, which Naesgaard buys and sells by the truckload.

Pots vary in media—ceramic, plastic, cedar—and size, from teacup to bathtub size. They range in price too: plastic pots are less expensive, ceramic and cedar more so but longer lasting.

While ceramic pots are attractive and durable, a gardener is not limited to using one medium when container gardening.

“Anything is a container,” Naesgaard says. “You can take an old boot, you

can take a washtub, you can take a five-gallon detergent bucket. The primary thing with using an ad hoc container is you have good drainage.

You have to drill holes in the bottom of your containers.”

Put your pots on little pot feet When planting in pots, it’s best to keep them off the ground, the deck or the patio so water can drain out the bottom.

Having pots off the ground also prevents perennials from rooting through the drainage holes and into a garden bed, which will plug up the holes and bind the roots.

(It helps keep slugs away too.)

The dirt on soil There are various types of soil available such as sea soil with fertilizer in it that are good for container gardening. It is important to use soil specifically intended for pots. You don’t want to dig some out of a garden bed for your containers because it’s not screened.

You also need to feed your plants; shrubs favour bone meal, while annuals need a soluble fertilizer that’s light in nitrogen.

Home Hardware now carries a line of planters made from locally-sourced cedar, which weathers well in west coast weather.

“You can mix plants in a pot or you can put one plant in a pot and mix up the pots,” says Naesgaard.

Hosta is a nice plant for a pot, its strong green and variegated leaves standing out well against colourful containers. Hosta is a good shade plant as well.

Annuals like geraniums, petunias and ivy will thrive in full sun. Clematis is a climber that fares well in a pot too.

Size matters The bigger the pot, the better off your plants will be. “Your basic hanging basket is about 12 inches across. That’s kind of the minimum,” says Naesgaard.

In terms of water retention and temperature regulation, bigger is definitely better, he adds.

“If it’s in a bigger pot you don’t have to water it as often.”

Change up your look hange Planting in pots is also a way to change your garden throughout the season, Naesgaard said.

As one flower finishes blooming, move its container to another part off ts the garden or patio that complements the greenery, and move a more colourful later-blooming plant forward.

“You have to use your imagination and creativity,” he says.

FACE of fi ne art Gwynne Hunt gets creative with new festival series

Harbour Quay on Port Alberni’s waterfront is known as an attraction for tourists and a great place for locals to enjoy a doughnut and coffee following a walk, or partake in myriad water-based activities.

For Gwynne Hunt, the quay represents opportunity.

This summer she has planned four small outdoor festivals under the guise of FACE: Festival of Artistic and Creative Expression.

FACE will comprise four outdoor theatre events, all on Saturdays: July 11 will be a Nite of Spoken Word at 7 p.m. July 25 Hunt will present two radio plays at 7 p.m. A Shakespeare-a-thon is planned for Aug. 15 all day at Harbour Quay, and a Renaissance Festival for Sept. 19 (including two evening plays).

“What we’re trying to do with the festival is introduce people to outdoor fringe-style theatre,” says Hunt, who for the past two years produced the Fringe Festival in town. She wants to combine different facets of the arts with FACE. For instance, the Spoken Word

Get your Shakespeare on for August festival night will feature pottery, poets and perhaps a monologue.

Hunt wrote the radio plays, which are set in the 1950s.

“It’s like they’re watching the radio actors come to work and perform the play, as if they’re doing it for radio,” she explains.

“They’re very funny.”

The Shakespeare-a-thon will have a psychedelic look to it.

“We’re going to dress like old hippies. I’m hoping to get actors to collect pledges on how long they can perform Shakespeare and make it a fundraiser.”

That evening there will be a half-hour performance of a Shakespeare play.

The Renaissance Faire will feature vendors, jugglers and buskers by day, and an Elizabethan-style comedy on the stage at night.

Hunt received a small grant

from Arrowsmith Rotary to be able to pay some of the actors and buskers a small stipend, but hopes the fundraiser will allow her to do more in the future.

Hunt has put on quite a bit of theatre here already, from Fringe Fest to the Vagina Monologues and acting workshops under the sponsorship of Art Matters Society.

Art Matters has existed since 1999, when it was founded in Abbotsford. When Hunt left the Fraser Valley for Port Alberni, five directors were left and they encouraged her to take the society with her. It has enjoyed a rejuvenation with new members here in Port Alberni.

Hunt has already made arrangements to put up a large white tent in the cobblestone area by the playground at Harbour Quay for the summer.

“We’ll put a little stage up there—an eight-foot-by-eightfoot platform—and anyone can use it.

“It’s a natural, beautiful place to do outdoor theatre. I’m really excited about doing this.”

Growing a community garden SUSAN QUINN Alberni Valley News The Young Professionals of the Alberni Valley are making healthy food more accessible to the public with the creation of the Dry Creek Community Garden.

Janette Cormier, a member of YPAV since 2013, is leading the charge. She took the group’s idea and, working with the city, found a plot of unused land, helped develop it and on May 3 will introduce it to the community at large.

Cormier has always been a gardener and farmer, and wanted to start a community garden somewhere in Port Alberni.

When she heard YPAV was

thinking of starting one, “I took it on,” she said.

Cormier sees a benefit for having several community gardens in the city, “so people can have access to good growing areas,” she said. “If people rent… they can’t garden in their yards.

There are lots of people living in apartments that need space to

garden.”

Gardens promote a healthy environment, and create a community atmosphere, she added.

“I feel all urban areas need to have community gardens,” she said. “I think Port Alberni could use more in different areas. The one on Wallace Street is full and has been full for a long time.

The one at Dry Creek will be full in no time.”

The YPAV has thought about building a second community garden at a different location, but want to get Dry Creek operating smoothly first.

“Gardens should be spread out” so people can walk to them within their own neighbourhood,

she said.

The Dry Creek Community Garden project kicked off last June; YPAV lease the space for $1 a year from the city (they have a three-year lease).

Franklin Forest Products donated lumber for the beds, Beaver Creek Home Centre donated and installed the fencing and Colyn’s Nursery gave them some plants to get started. The city gave them some soil, which YPAV volunteers are sifting, and Totem Tree donated mulch.

Dry Creek garden opens May 3 The fenced in area is 75x60 feet and although not all the raised beds are built yet, they will eventually include 18 large and four small raised beds.

While YPAV is maintaining the garden, the community is already invested in it, Cormier said.

“We’re already renting out [4x16-foot] plots to individuals and organizations,” she said. “About half of the plots are spoken for already.”

Cormier rents a plot to grow garlic. There are also some communal beds she maintains that have culinary herbs and tea herbs. There are four beds at the back of the garden with perennial fruitbearing shrubs, and Cormier and her husband Lonnie Olsen have propagated grapes and hops along the fences.

Cormier has also applied for a grant to plant fruit and nut trees. The Port Alberni Friendship Center is the only organization renting a plot at the moment, and they plan to run a gardening program. “I’m hoping in the future there will be more of that,” Cormier said.

The YPAV would also like to set up a sponsorship program to assist low-income people access the garden so they can access healthier food.
