Cop climbs into speeding vehicle to make bust sarah Payne The Tri-CiTy News

A Coquitlam resident is facing several firearms-related charges after being arrested by Port Moody Police following a car chase early last Friday morning.

According to PMPD, officers patrolling an area known for drug trafficking and prostitution stopped a speeding vehicle on St. Johns Street; in speaking with the driver, police noticed what appeared to be a vial of cocaine protruding from

the suspect’s pocket and tried to arrest him.

The driver began yelling, however, and refused to get out of the vehicle. A second officer opened the passenger door to help remove the suspect but the driver pulled away with the

officer clinging to the roof and open door.

To avoid being dragged down, the officer pulled himself inside and was then able to subdue the driver and force the vehicle into park. The officer wasn’t injured.

Upon arresting the man, police recovered a loaded handgun in the suspect’s man-purse as well as drugs suspected to be cocaine and heroin.

Jeremy Jesson, 42, is facing eight criminal charges, including possession of a firearm

while prohibited, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and more.

Jesson is well known to police.

The 35th anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope on Sunday marked two significant repeats in the Port Coquitlam hero’s legacy.

Not only was ocean water collected at the site where Terry Fox started his epic journey in Newfoundland — and the spot where he, too, collected chilly Atlantic water — but his eldest brother made the same plea Fox made in 1980, asking Canadians to give $1 apiece to help with the fight against cancer.

At that time, Fox’s goal was to raise $24 million for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Now, Fred Fox is asking for

$35 million for the Terry Fox Foundation, a charity that has raised more than $700 million since the one-legged runner began his campaign.

Heather Goresky Caslor, program co-ordinator for the Terry Fox Foundation in Newfoundland, said Sunday was a symbolic day for the community of Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove. The Rev. Bill Strong went to the same place he took Terry Fox on April 12, 1980, to dip his prosthetic leg and fill a jug, hoping to pour it into the Pacific Ocean once the cross-country Marathon of Hope was complete.

On Sunday, Rev. Strong collected a jar of ocean water that was then relayed by 35 participants to St. Francis of Assisi

school. There, more than 200 people — including Fox’s three siblings and their father, Rolly — recognized the historic day.

“There was also a presentation made to Rolly by Chief Officer Matthew Wheaton from the Terry Fox Coast Guard Icebreaker, of a flag that flew on the ship,” Goresky said.

Meanwhile, across Canada, Running Room stores hosted walk/run events to start the fundraising season for this year’s Terry Fox Run. The Terry Fox Run takes place on Sept.

In April 1980, Tracy Cowie was one half of a photo op that has become a lifelong inspiration.

The seven-year-old Cowie (Tracy Kimoto at the time) gave Terry Fox a daffodil bouquet just before he left for his Marathon of Hope, and the moment was captured by a photographer for The Enterprise newspaper. The caption notes that “jogger Terry Fox” would soon be setting off on a crosscountry run to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society, starting on April 12, 1980 with hopes to reach Port Coquitlam

by September of that year.

“My dad was a volunteer for the Canadian Cancer Society and they thought it would be cute to have a little girl give him

some daffodils as the kick-off,” Cowie recalled. Her dad put her up to the task and explained who Fox was and what he’d be doing.

When it came time for the photo op, Cowie was nervous — she knew Fox was about to do something big but didn’t understand how big — and also sick.

“I had the flu so my mom packed me an extra dress,” Cowie said. “She was so scared I would get sick on Terry Fox. “My parents had always taught me about inclusiveness but when I met Terry I was scared. I’d never seen someone with an artificial leg before, but also he was so tall.”

She and her parents were already wowed by the young runner but it wasn’t until he started his run on the Atlantic coast that they began to understand the magnitude of it.

They followed Fox’s progress on the news and were devastated when they learned he had to cut the Marathon of Hope short on Sept. 1, 1980.

And Cowie remembers hearing the heartbreaking news that Fox had died on June 28, 1981.

But the newspaper photo stayed with her, an ever-present reminder of her hero — par-

ticularly when she ran her first marathon and understood the enormous physical challenge of doing just one, never mind a marathon every day for 143 days.

When she became a biology teacher at Dr. Charles Best secondary, like her father before her, Cowie started bringing the clipping to the classroom to share the inspirational story with her students.

“He did it with such humility, with no corporate sponsorship, for the greater good,” Cowie said. “He did something beyond himself.

“As I get older, I’m more and more amazed at what he did, how selfless it was and how it benefitted so many people,” she said. “Nowadays, there are not too many people who model that kind of altruism. He really did think beyond himself.”

Five unvaccinated Terry Fox students were asked to stay home until April 24 to avoid measles infection or to get shots to prevent the spread of the disease.

On Tuesday, the medical health officer for Fraser Health confirmed the students’ families had been contacted and the teens were either at home or were getting vaccinated.

“There’s still a few students who are not immunized and whose parents have chosen that their child not be immunized,” Dr. Michelle Murti said. “They will continue to be at home until their incubation is over.

They realize their child is at risk, and they could put others at risk.”

Fraser Health nurses spent three days going through the records of 1,500 students and vaccinated approximately 160

to prevent the spread of the disease after a student came down with measles after a flight from China March 21.

Murti explained that Fraser Health doesn’t track students’ immunization records, except when school shots are given in Grades 6 and 9, so getting up to speed when measles was found at the school last week was a big job.

“We need to know who’s been exposed at that time,” she said. “It helps when everyone’s records are up-to-date and we can go through this quickly as and easily.”

Two Grade 10 students from Coquitlam’s Dr. Charles Best secondary school, Zakir Kassam and Anna Yang, placed sixth last month at an international debate competition in Bratislava, Slovakia.

They were part of a fivemember team from Canada competing under coach Frankie Cena of Port Moody that also included Coquitlam resident Jeffrey Dawson, who’s a Grade 9 student at University Hill secondary in Vancouver, as well as Ashley Phord-Toy and Katharine Lee, both students at Crofton House school in Vancouver.

The four-day competition featured debate topics such as: “Should Europe abandon all fiscal austerity measures?” and “Should pharmaceutical companies be required to sell drugs at production cost to Third World countries?” The tournament had 56 teams from

Letters went home to students last week alerting parents to the measles case and a notice was posted on the school website asking people to stay home if they had symptoms,

including a fever, rash, red eyes, a cough and a runny nose.

People born before 1970 are protected against the disease but people born after that year who have never been vaccinated or never received a second dose of the measles vaccination got the shot. A booster shot is not harmful and could provide additional protection for those who are unsure about whether they are vaccinated, according to Fraser Health.

In all, 10 people from the China flight are known to have contracted measles, the one from Fox plus a few students attending Vancouver schools.

“It’s amazing, they are so young,” he said of the team.

“They have never worked together before. With hard work and focus, who thought we could go to an international competition and beat out these established teams?”

Megan Leslie, the debate team’s sponsor teacher at Best for the last four years, said Kassam and Yang are driven — they organize all the tournaments, do the paperwork, coach the kids, arrange for transportation, make sure everyone’s prepared and do the research.

“I trust them,” Leslie said.

“Their level of personal responsibility not only for their academics, but to the debate club and their own personal growth, I know I don’t need to supervise them.”

“Debate has really blossomed at Charles Best,” Yang said. “We didn’t really think about it but there’s really a culture for it, there’s that niche of students that really want to do it.”

Next year Kassam and Yang will be in the senior category for debate and their eventual goal is to make Team Canada’s national team. They also compete in bilingual debates in French and English.

Coquitlam could soon be jumping on the Lower Mainland’s craft beer band wagon.

City staff will begin preparing draft zoning regulations that would accommodate breweries and distilleries in

the municipality after council voted unanimously to approve the measures at Monday’s meeting.

Current zoning allows for the production of alcohol but prohibits its retail sale for onsite — or off-site — consumption.

“This puts Coquitlam at a competitive disadvantage to a number of other municipalities in attracting craft breweries to locate in the city,” said a staff report.

If the city approves the zoning amendment bylaw, it

could open the door for craft brewery pubs, an industry that has exploded across the Lower Mainland in the last few years.

Port Moody, for example, has seen two craft breweries open in the last year and a third one is set to open this summer.

Moody Ales has recently applied for a lounge licence that would allow the business to pour full pints for customers on site and stay open later as both it and Yellow Dog Brewing have reported business is booming.

Burquitlam-Lougheed residents are split on whether they want to see more density in the area, according to a survey conducted by the city of Coquitlam.

Almost 15% of survey respondents said they believe density and redevelopment would improve the neighbourhoods while more than 18% listed density as one of their biggest concerns.

The contradictory results mean city staff will likely have to make some difficult decisions when coming up with a neighbourhood plan for the area, said Jim McIntyre, Coquitlam’s general manager of planning and development services.

“We received quite a range of feedback,” he said. “Some of it is a bit inconsistent. It’s a bit of a mixed bag.”

The city recently completed its public consultation process in Burquitlam-Lougheed and will now analyze the results before drafting the neighbourhood plan. Density is a big issue in the area, which has seen a boom in development accompanying the construction of the Evergreen Line.

The online survey was conducted between Dec. 9, 2014 and Feb. 27, 2015 and received 217 submissions. Other public consultations have also taken place, including open houses and community information sessions. Staff said when the data from these other consultations methods are taken into account, 37% of respondents are “generally supportive of increased housing density.”

In the survey, residents who favoured density were fairly specific about the types of housing they would like to see, with a preference for groundoriented development, such as townhouses and coach houses, as well as low-rise apartments.

LOCKDOwN Tues. iN pOCO Hyde Creek recreation centre and Minnekhada middle school were locked down briefly Tuesday morning as Coquitlam RCMP searched for suspects in a home break-in.

Cpl. Jamie Chung said two young men broke into a home in the 1400-block of Kamloops Place in Port Coquitlam at about 10:40 a.m. They were looking around when the homeowner scared them off.

As they were running away, a person who spotted them reported one was possibly carrying a handgun.

“The lockdown was precautionary and no one in the recreation centre or Minnekhada was ever in danger,” Chung said.

As of noon Tuesday the suspects were still at large. One suspect is described as 5’8” tall, 190 lb. with dark skin; he was wearing a black baseball cap, shorts and a grey hoodie, and was carrying a black bag. The second suspect is said to be in his 20s and was wearing pants and a blue coat.

Coquitlam’s QNet program, which provides businesses, schools and residential highrises with high-speed broadband internet access, expanded in 2014.

Five new buildings connected to the state-of-the-art fibre optic network last year, bringing the total to 45 across the municipality, according to an annual report presented Monday to Coquitlam city council.

The document also noted that QNet made $434,060 in revenue in 2014, up 16% from the year before, producing a cash flow surplus of $94,431. The revenue, which comes from the leasing out of unused network capacity to business, governments and telecom service providers, was $10,000 more than forecast.

“QNet was initially started to take advantage of unused capacity in our fibre optic network,” said Coquitlam city manager Peter Steblin, who is also board chair of QNet. “In fact, Coquitlam was the first municipality in Canada to do so.”

The city predicts continued growth with its QNet program in to 2015. Staff expect that the service will be able to repay the city’s $4.95 million initial investment, plus $1.7 million in interest charges, by 2028. Close to $11 million in accumulated profit is projected by 2037.

“The train has left the station,” Marsden said. “Whether you support [density] or not, it is moot. We just need to move forward with how we manage it.”

Another inconsistency in the survey results centres around pedestrian and cycling infrastructure. When asked to pick

one thing that would improve the area, close to 16% of respondents said they would like to see more facilities for walking and biking — but on list of funding priorities, bike lanes were ranked last.

Public safety was another priority residents selected in the survey and staff noted there was some concern among residents about crime related to the SkyTrain station. Traffic improvements were also listed as a top spending priority, according to the survey results.

City staff intend to use the feedback garnered during the public input process to develop land use options for the area.

Horgan said the appraiser’s 137-page report also recommended the government keep the Burke land on the market for six to nine months. Instead, the deal with Wesbild — a major BC Liberal Party donor — closed in three months.

“They were driven by meeting their budgetary targets,” Horgan said of the BC Liberals under Premier Christy Clark.

“They wanted to sell before the end of the fiscal year.”

According to the Tenures, Competitiveness and Innovation Division report received by the BC NDP, one parcel appraised at $5.6 million sold for $100,000; in another instance, a parcel valued at $17.5 million went for $6.9 million.

The Tri-Cities’ two NDP MLAs also reacted strongly to the news yesterday, calling the transaction a “fire sale.”

“The concern is the province pretty much just gave it away,” Coquitlam-Maillardville MLA Selina Robinson said. “They didn’t protect a public asset.

They left $43 million on the table.”

said — that meets the city of Coquitlam’s vision.

“I think Burke Mountain is going to be a spectacular community as well,” Horne said.

“The fact is, we have a developer with deep pockets. The huge commitment to the community with Wesbild involved is going to make certain that happens.”

Horgan responded: “When you’re trying to encourage comprehensive development, that’s not the province’s responsibility, that’s the developer’s responsibility. And when you have $128 million in real estate, then you should get $128 million for it. The discount should be coming from someone else, not the province of B.C.” Horgan said his party plans to review every parcel sold by the provincial government since Premier Clark announced the sale of surplus Crown holdings.

Last year, the province put up 584 acres of land for sale on Burke; 370 acres were bought

by Wesbild and much of the remainder (160 acres) was purchased in January by the city of Coquitlam, for $11 million.

Wesbild’s spokesperson was unable to comment before The Tri-City News’ print deadline.

Food on PoCo trail a problem

PoCo bylaw office looking into who is leaving food

An elderly woman is in stable condition in hospital after she was hit in a Port Moody crosswalk Monday morning.

Const. Luke van Winkel said Port Moody Police responded at 11:15 a.m. to reports that a woman had been hit in the crosswalk at Glenayre and Glencoe drives. She was taken to hospital in serious condition but her status was later changed to stable. The driver stayed at the scene and police are investigating.

“At this point, weather appears to be a contributing factor,” van Winkel said.

Police will be investigating whether there were any other contributing factors.

That area of Port Moody has become busier than usual in the last week as a sinkhole related to drilling of the Evergreen Line tunnel has forced drivers to detour.

Linda Reakes walks a stretch of the Traboulay PoCo Trail near her house every day but, since the new year, she has been doing more than just enjoying the fresh air and scenery — she has been picking up large piles of food waste left behind by an unknown culprit.

Reakes lives near Osborne and Lafleur streets and said the trouble started in January with a gingerbread house dumped by the trail. In the past few months, she and her neighbours have picked up at least 10 large piles of food waste, the most recent being an abandoned hot dog bun and some spaghetti.

Reakes is concerned that as spring warms up, the discarded food will become a dangerous attractant for bears and coyotes. “We’re going to have an aggressive [animal] issue,” she said.

Coquitlam animal control staff have been busy trying to catch a cormorant at Lafarge Lake that appears to have fishing line and a float wrapped around its leg.

Despite the fact the bird is tangled, it has proven difficult to capture, as staff seek to help struggling animal.

“We did attempt to rescue the bird,” said Andrea McDonald, the city’s manager of bylaws and animal controls services.

“The bird seems to be able to fly and swim much better than we are at getting close to it.”

McDonald said that staff are monitoring the situation and have even gone out on boats to attempt to grab the bird. If the animal gets itself in more distress, she added, staff will

have to capture it and remove the line.

Calls from the public have been pouring into city hall on the matter and staff wants residents to know that they are trying to deal with the issue. The city is also looking at working with partner agencies and fishing groups on public education to help avoid similar future incidents.

The Freshwater Fisheries Society of B.C., the organization that stocks Lafarge Lake, has been notified and will be conducting a lake cleanup at Lafarge and Como lakes prior to their evening fishing program on April 21. FFSBC will also have members at both lakes on May 4 to talk with anglers about fishing etiquette and proper line disposal. gmckenna@tricitynews.com @GMcKennaTC

What’s most frustrating, she added, is that the food is being dumped so close to a garbage can.

“They seem to be doing it when everybody is off the trail, when nobody is watching,” Reakes said. “They don’t leave a garbage bag, receipts, nothing.”

She’s hoping that whoever is leaving the food — Reakes suspects they have children, given the gingerbread house — will come to their senses before a bear discovers it.

Dan Scoones, PoCo’s manager of bylaw services, said the

dumping of food is a serious concern.

“That’s a total wildlife attractant,” he said, noting bears, coyotes and rats will be drawn to the easy food source.

“This isn’t a case where we just have to monitor and figure out who’s dumping their yard trimmings, this elevates it to a different level,” Scoones said.

Naked hiker is spotted on trail – again Sarah Payne

Stephen Lam was enjoying a hike on Coquitlam’s Crystal Falls trail Saturday when he spotted a man known to take that love of nature one step further.

Lam told The Tri-City News he had walked to the top of the waterfall when he noticed another trail continuing up the hill and figured he’d explore. Along the way, he discovered what appeared to be someone’s camp, including a large tarp and the remains of a camp fire.

“As I walked further ahead, I noticed some movement,” Lam said.

“He was basically hiding and was asking me whether there was anybody right behind me.”

Once the man knew the other hikers were down by the waterfall, he emerged — naked — from his hiding spot.

“There was a bit of awkwardness,” Lam said, adding he told the man it was a public trail before he continued on his own hike.

A couple minutes later, Lam realized the man was hiking right behind him — fully clothed — and said he wanted to check where the trail led.

Lam’s description of the man — in his mid 20s, about 5’9” tall with dark brown hair — matched those of three other people who spotted a man in the nude walking the same trail in January.

At the time, Coquitlam RCMP said the man hadn’t threatened or spoken to anyone but they wanted to know why he was out in the cold with no clothes on. Police also said that witness accounts did not indicate drugs or mental health issues were factors.

Lam said the man appeared surprised that anyone was on that upper portion of the trail and that he seemed like “just a regular guy doing his own thing, but next time... maybe do it at [Vancouver’s] Wreck Beach.” spayne@tricitynews.com @spayneTC

A road remains partially closed and Evergreen Line tunnelling is on hold after a third sinkhole developed last week in the College Park area of Port Moody.

Amanda Farrell, the Evergreen Line project director, said the ground settled around Seaview Drive and Clarke Road, creating a five-by-five-metre dip in the roadway. Seaview has been closed in one direction and tunnel boring operations have ceased until at least May, she said.

alternating traffic 24 hours a day until the work site is dismantled.

Farrell could not say when the road would be completely re-opened, noting that it could only happen when crews determine it is safe.

“It is difficult,” she said. “We certainly didn’t anticipate it happening in this location.”

She added that at this time, the Evergreen Line is still expected to open in the fall of 2016, a target previously delayed from the original a timeline after earlier sinkholes were discovered.

Last October, a depression in the road developed in the Chateau Place parking lot and, in January, a large sinkhole appeared on Cecile Drive. In both cases, the sinkholes formed in areas that were already fenced

The company that oversaw part of the rebuild of the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex in Coquitlam will stickhandle the planned update of the Port Coquitlam recreation centre.

This week, members of the city’s finance committee approved a $350,000 contract for Tango Management Group — formerly known as Task — to be the project handlers.

The project will include the revitalization of the rec centre, Wilson Centre and the Terry Fox Library. In all, the project will involve the redevelopment of the city-owned campus south of Wilson Avenue, between Mary Hill Road and Kingsway Avenue.

operations, told the committee Monday the Tango bid was one of 10 proposals the city reviewed for project management.

Besides the Poirier project, Tango has previously worked on the Revelstoke Aquatic Centre and the Nanaimo Ice Centre and Aquatic Centre.

In the 2015 financial plan, which was given final approval Monday, city council budgeted $1.5 million this year for planning, consultation and design for the community recreation complex project.

off and the public was not at risk, according to the Ministry of Transportation.

Farrell said crews have completed more than 50% of the tunnelling and that 60% of the line is compete.

The most recent sinkhole developed last Thursday night despite efforts from the contractor to build a grout wall in the ground. Farrell said that as the boring moves up the hill and away from the water, the tunnelling is expected to get easier.

Crews will continue to investigate around the perimeter of the sinkhole to ensure the ground will remain stable as drilling continues.

“They will be doing more drilling,” she said. “I would imagine that would be after they got the road back open.” @GMcKennaTC

Burpee announced last Wednesday that in December, he will step down as chair of the task group.

And there is little doubt he is leaving the homeless situation better than he found it.

Today, a cold wet/weather mat program he was critical in implementing just wrapped up its eighth season; and around the time of his departure from the committee, a permanent shelter will open at 3030 Gordon Ave. in Coquitlam.

As well, outreach workers have helped move many people into more stable forms of housing, bringing the number of homeless down from the high of over 200 to around 60 now.

Despite the success, after nine busy years at the helm, Burpee said the organization needs turnover in its leadership to bring fresh perspectives. As a new grandfather, he’s also looking forward to spending a bit more time with his family.

“From a personal point of view, it is time for me to slow down a bit,” he said. “I don’t intend to leave the issue of housing and homelessness altogether. I still anticipate being active with the task group.”

He also admitted that had he known how much work was ahead, he may have been a bit more reticent about taking on the unpaid job in 2006.

Burpee’s background is more technical and managerial, and he said he has not had much first-hand experience with poverty. But he has always felt strongly about the issue, something that drove him during the last nine years.

“It really resonates with something deep inside me,” he said, “that people could be without the anchor of a home and a family, on the streets with nobody — that just deeply disturbs me.”

One of his proudest days with the task group was watching construction equipment roll onto 3030 Gordon last year.

There have been other major milestones along the way.

The task group played a key role in bringing a supportive housing development for single mothers to 528 Como Lake Ave. in Coquitlam in 2012.

It was also critical in the implementation of the cold/wet weather mat program, a giant step on the way to bringing down the number of homeless people in the Tri-Cities, he said.

It was also one of the first times the task group faced loud opposition from the community. Many residents spoke against the shelter program, which rotates between churches for six of the coldest months of the year, for fear that it would turn quiet neighbourhoods into high-crime areas.

“There really was a fair bit of pressure,” Burpee said. “We

But the feared problems never materialized, he said, and the task group learned a lot about interacting with the

community and explaining its goals to residents.

Despite many of the gains made, Burpee said there is still a lot of work to be done, and he hopes that fresh leadership will help carry the task group into a new phase in dealing with homelessness in the Tri-Cities.

Twitter chat tomorrow on Vote Yes, help vulnerable; or SD43 budget vote No, condo taxes can pay TRANSPORTATION REFERENDUM

The Editor Imagine you could give back time to a low-income, working mom who commutes two to three hours every day or if you could keep a senior connected by making it easier for them to get around.

You can: Vote Yes for transit.

High housing costs mean lower-income families are moving away from Vancouver, often resulting in longer commute times. Parents often have to work multiple jobs or shifts.

Low-wage earners are heavy transit users: 32% of their trips are by transit, double the regional average. With fewer transportation options, parents are spending less time with their children.

The proposed 0.5% sales tax increase would result in an overall 25% increase in transit service, including an 80% increase in night bus service.

Why is this important? Because when parents do better, their children do better.

For seniors, there are many

barriers to getting around.

Transit is a lifeline. The proposed 0.5% sales tax increase would provide a 30% increase in HandyDart services and accessibility upgrades at transit stations and bus loops. Why is this important? About one in four seniors lives alone. With limited transportation options, seniors risk becoming shut-ins.

Loneliness has been shown to be as dangerous as smoking.

The Editor, According to information posted by News 1130 on the weekend, more and more condos are being built in Metro Vancouver then detached houses. March start-up numbers were 1,600 condos to 324 single-detached houses.

In the Lower Mainland and Victoria, more than 50% of taxable properties are strata units.

It is estimated that more than 700,000 British Columbians are owners of condos or strata units.

Would it be wrong to suggest that B.C. governments view increasing condo development in the most favourable way?

Nobody we have read so far has written about the property tax windfalls that are filling the governments’ coffers with each condo development built and sold — beginning with developers’ development cost charges, the most common

means of financing growthrelated infrastructure. DCCs are levied by the municipalities on new development to assist in financing the cost of upgrading or providing infrastructure services (roads, water, etc.).

The smoke-and-mirrors transit referendum media talk is meant to redirect the financial focus, in our opinion. All we read is how the population in B.C. is increasing and how, we now need to provide the predicted population explosion with the freedom to travel without traffic congestion.

We propose that the underreported and increasing amounts of condo property taxes become governments’ source of the funding that is needed to support the future amenities and infrastructure.

Considering the fact that we are all overburdened with rising costs in all sectors of our lives, we have not yet been convinced and will vote No on the proposed .05% increase to the PST. W. Sikorra, Port Coquitlam

Two years ago, School District 43 faced a deficit of $10.2 million — a debt the district is still paying off.

Last year, the board of education made $13.8 million in cuts so the district could balance its budget and almost 100 teachers and support workers lost their jobs.

Now, the district is promising a status quo budget with no new cuts STRANDBERG for 2015/’16 — but what does that mean for local students and their families, teachers and support workers in SD43?

If there were one role that Coquitlam actor Lisa Pope MacDonald can relate to the most, the mom-of-two would choose “Nancy.”

She’s the stereotypical, involved and very hardworking mother — one of three characters created by Kathleen Clark for her Secrets of a Soccer Mom. Though in real life her kids are more keen on baseball, Pope MacDonald said she often hears the trials and tribulations from other moms engrossed in the soccer world “and I think to myself,’ Oh, they’re just like Nancy!’ So I guess I have a pretty good idea of what they’re going through and how Nancy would react to similar situations of being constantly busy.”

Secrets of a Soccer Mom is Pope MacDonald’s second show with the Coquitlambased Stage 43, which this and next month will close its “mother-themed” season with the comedy. (Last fall, it produced Mama Won’t Fly and, over the winter, it put on the tear-jerker Steel Magnolias.)

Pope MacDonald, who is returning to the theatre scene after a two-year hiatus following the birth of her second child, said she looks forward to getting back into the swing of things.

It’ll be her third time working with Stephen Torrence, who is directing his first play for Stage 43.

He offered it to Stage 43 for consideration — mainly due to the demographic makeup of the Tri-Cities, being the third largest school district in the province — and they, too, thought it would work well locally.

“The Tri-Cities is the heart of parent-participation sports,” Torrence said. “It seemed like such a good fit for the community.”

But while the show is geared to moms, Secrets also appeals to teens, grandparents and men, “if only just to understand their wives,” Torrence said, with a laugh.

Still, it’s not his first go at directing an all-female cast.

Torrence and his wife have a company called Get Real Theatre and, in 2009, it qualified for a provincial spot after winning Best Production for Eleemosynary at the Greater Vancouver Zone Festival.

That experience will help Stage 43 next month as Secrets is its entry to the Fraser Valley Zone Festival, which runs May 17 to 23 in Langley.

And Torrence feels the show has a good shot.

Not only are the three actors — Pope MacDonald, Julia Walmsley and Arsha Tahir — comfortable with each other and the material but Secrets is also skillfully stage managed Jess Piper Douglas, he said.

Ballet Kelowna’s spring tour includes a stop in Coquitlam.

A small ballet company in B.C. that was on shaky financial ground two years ago will wrap up its latest season with a spring tour that includes a stop in Coquitlam.

The Evergreen Cultural Centre is the seventh out of nine dates for Ballet Kelowna’s Forward: A Mixed Repertory Programme, to be shown on Friday.

And featured on its program are two world premieres and a company premiere.

Former Royal Winnipeg Ballet dancer Shawn Housell will present a new work set to Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin while the company’s new artistic director, Simone Orlando, a former Ballet BC principal dancer, has a piece set to Mozart.

The program also includes Jedidiah Duifhuis dancing to Byrd Music by the renowned choreographer James Kudelka, and the world premiere of Lee Dances, based on excerpts from three original works — Winter Journey (2006) by Orlando, Creaturehood (1996)

Driving through the Rockies this week — en route from St. Albert to Port Moody for tomorrow night’s opening reception of her new exhibit — Samantha Williams-Chapelsky would have seen her favourite landscapes.

The painter has had a lifelong love of the mountainous region between B.C. and Alberta, where she lives. “I love both sides of the border,” she said. “It’s very humbling.... to weave through those giant rock formations. I’m in awe.”

But to capture the majestic scenery in her artwork, Williams-Chapelsky used an especially delicate canvas: silk. On a whim five years ago, the traditional acrylic and oil painter tried out some allnatural dyes and admired the effect.

Williams-Chapelsky said she wasn’t trying to make a political statement about marriage; rather, she wanted to focus more on the beauty of the Rockies on a large, precious fabric background. “With so many things cheaply made these days, there’s a lot to be said of hand-painted quality.”

Williams-Chapelsky’s show, The Nature of Silk, will be exhibited in the Canadian Pacific and Suncor galleries at PMAC. Meanwhile, also launching Thursday in the 3D Gallery is a new exhibit by Squamish realist painter Jenna Robinson.

Mike Dangeli wears many hats.

Not only is the Burnaby resident a commercially successful artist, he’s also a keen promoter of healthy thinking and living — be it among his students at St. Thomas Aquinas regional secondary school or from the Nisga’a First Nation or the Vancouver Police.

At St. Thomas Aquinas, he works primarily with the aboriginal youth. For his all-ages Nisga’a group, Dangeli is on his 11th round of art mentorship, a program that also includes discussions about love and self-care. And with the VPD, he’s involved in “competency training. There’s so much us and them mentality,” Dangeli said, noting his eight-week sessions try to break down the stereotype often faced with First Nations people.

Dangeli has other projects on the go as well. He and his wife, Mique’l, who was due to defend her PhD thesis in art history this week, lead a Northwest Coast First Nations mask-dancing company called Git Hayetsk. That, too, advo-

cates for a healthy balance in life and culture. And, soon, he’ll start his 21st totem pole — a carving he’s doing on spec.

It has been a busy week for the Tri-City’s high school rugby squad.

Port Coquitlam’s Terry Fox Ravens notched their second win of the regular season after taking down Clayton Heights 60-0 last Thursday.

Fox has been rolling so far this season, putting up 104 points

while only allowing five in two games, putting the team at the top of the their division.

Meanwhile, the Gleneagle Talons are vying for the top spot after going 2-0 in their first two games of the season.

The Coquitlam club defeated Port Moody last week by a score of 32-13 and are gearing up for a Thursday night tilt against the Dr. Charles Best secondary Blue Devils.

The Blue Devils are 1-1 so far this season, after dropping their opening match against the Ravens last week.

The team bounced back on Thursday when they defeated Port Moody, a team that is still looking for its first win, in a low scoring 14-10 affair.

The Centennial secondary Centaurs are currently 0-1 this season and will take on Terry Fox Thursday night.

But while three Tri-City teams have already secured their post-season position, the bottom clubs in the division are still battling for the fourth and final spot.

Several games will be played next week to determine which one of the three teams will move forward with a playoff berth.

Monday night saw all of the squads battling for position in the competitive division.

The Blue Devils squared off against Port Coquitlam’s

Ravens in a match featuring the two undefeated teams, with the Coquitlam squad taking down the PoCo rivals 4-0.

Meanwhile, Port Moody’s Heritage Woods notched its third win of the season, shutting out the Centaurs 3-0.

The Talons grabbed their first win of the season when they defeated the Riverside secondary Rapids by a score of 2-0.

The Centennial Centaurs improved their odds of making it into the playoffs last Thursday, when the team

defeated the Talons 4-1 at Cunnings Field.

Also on Thursday, the Terry Fox Ravens shut out Riverside 1-0, while Best took down the Heritage Woods Kodiaks 3-2.

Heritage Woods’ two goals were the only ones scored against the Blue Devils during the regular season.

All of the teams will get back at it next week, when a handful of games will be played to decide seeding ahead of the Fraser Valley playoffs, which begin next month.

Como Lake relays are today Elementary school race kicks off at 3 p.m.

Tri-City students in Grades 4 and 5 are busy training for the 37th annual Como Lake Relays, which will take place in Coquitlam later this month.

More than 2,000 students

are expected to participate in the run, which promotes running activities and physical fitness.

This year, because of the larger number of people expected to turn out, the race will be held over two days (April 15 and April 16) between approximately 3 and 5 p.m. rain or shine.

Students will be organized

into teams of four, with each member running 1.2 km around the lake.
