Only a few weeks after the bylaw was introduced, council has sealed the deal and stopped any more payday loan stores from opening in Maple Ridge.

Final reading was given to two bylaws Tuesday that ban the quick-loan companies from opening any more locations within the city boundaries.

Coun. Tyler Shymkiw led the effort after making a promise during the November election to stop any more payday loan stores from opening.

“Thank you to staff and my colleagues and the mayor for moving this along so quickly,” Shymkiw said.

Waste haulers pitch to council ‘Choice is good, encourages recycling’

Two garbage hauling companies made their pitch Tuesday to Maple Ridge council to keep the system private.

AJM Disposal Services and Progressive Waste Solutions warned of rising costs and praised the current system in which four companies pick

up trash from Maple Ridge homes.

Maple Ridge council is currently studying the issue of city-wide garbage collection.

“Multiple waste-service providers mean residents have multiple choices in services and pricing,” said Matt Torgerson, with AJM Disposal. “And it puts homeowners in control of their own waste and recycling budgets,” at no cost to the public treasury or tax increases.

Torgerson said the company’s customers, employees and stakeholders are worried about property tax in-

creases, loss of local jobs and disruption of residential growth if the city adopts a single, city-wide collection system.

“These and other issues need to be addressed and we anticipate the city will be consulting with its residents.”

Torgerson said the current system also keeps Maple Ridge a leader in environmental practices because of the emphasis on recycling.

The company is fixing one issue, however, he added.

vehicles on the streets.”

AJM has already adjusted its schedule so its trucks are on the street the same time as the Ridge Meadows Recycling Society collection trucks.

He’d welcome a bylaw to require collection services to harmonize their pickup days. That could help reduce food waste on the street attracting garbage.

Grant Hankins, district manager for Progressive Waste Systems, said the current system encourages people to recycle because they have to pay directly for garbage collection.

The more waste that’s recycled, the less garbage that has to be hauled away.

With people having a user-pay system, in which they pay directly for garbage collection, they’re more aware of the cost of transporting waste and more encouraged to recycle, he added.

He claimed this has resulted in Maple Ridge having one of the most cost-effective waste collection systems and having one of the highest recyclables diversion rates.

or Bev Schmahmann and Teesha Sharma, a visit to one of Canada’s poorest neighbourhoods was affirmation that more needs to be done for local youth.

Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside is home to a wide swath of drug addicts, sex workers and homeless people left to their own devices, many dealing with mental health issues.

Schmahmann and Sharma, social workers in Maple Ridge, visited the WISH Drop-in Centre, which helps women involved in the sextrade on the Downtown Eastside.

“We walked in there and we saw everything from 16-year-old girls to 75-year-old women who were still going out into the street every night,” said Sharma. “That was probably the hardest thing we’ve seen. It’s so easy for our youth to end up down there. Might seem like a really extreme outcome, but the fact is, it’s not.

The youth on the streets of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows are extremely vulnerable.”

They are hoping to change that.

Schmahmann and Sharma are hoping to open The Blue Door, a long-term group home for homeless youth. According to the pair, there are about 15 homeless youth in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.

“Personally, for me, the community should come together,” Schmahmann said. “As a par-

ent, as a mother, even one is too many. We’ve got kids sleeping under bridges on the street.

We need somewhere for them to go.”

While the will is there, the logistics of setting up a group home like Blue Door are complicated.

In their search for funding, they’ve come up against the same road block. Before any financial institution while lend them money, they want to see a year of financials.

For Schmahmann and Sharma, opening the doors and covering operating costs for one year would require about $175,000.

Since they’ve launched the idea, they have sat down with a host of local groups and city officials in hopes of garnering not only support, but funding. Everyone from Mayor Nicole Reed to Darrell Pilgrim of the Salvation Army, as well as officials at the Ministry of Children and Family Development.

While they’ve been greeted with support for the idea, securing a location and getting the funds in place is a different matter. The next round of government funding won’t be in place until the spring of 2016. Schmahmann and Sharma said they don’t want to wait that long.

Sharma also said to secure funding from the Ministry of Children and Family Development, The Blue Door would have to comply with the government’s Housing First approach to treatment.

proach involving moving people who experience homelessness into independent and permanent housing as quickly as possible, with no preconditions, then providing them with additional services and supports as needed.

The idea is that people can get their lives back in order quicker if the basic need of having a roof over your head is met. Once that need is in place, then services can be offered to help clients look for work or go back to school.

The Housing First approach has a heavy emphasis on helping those who are addicted and those who suffer from mental health issues.

Schmahmann and Sharma acknowledge that the problem for youth is often different. Addiction, especially, is something just around the corner for a homeless youth, something they are drawn to as their plight deepens.

“That model is not ideal for youth, but that is what’s being funded right now,” Sharma said of Housing First. “So we’ve taken the hosing first model and tweaked it for the community and can hopefully make it work for our youth.”

There is also the fact that in a day when the provincial government’s goals are balanced budgets and new taxes to pay for transit funding, money for group homes is in short supply.

The Iron Horse Safe House lost its government funding at the end of 2014 and now the group no longer offers overnight beds to kids.

For Schmahmann and Sharma, it’s a need that must be met in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.

The Blue Door would shelter five kids, as well as having one emergency bed for overnight stays, said Sharma.

“The fact is it’s been done before. It’s been done in Mission, Abbotsford, and I have to believe that our community will come together and do this because it is so necessary,” said Sharma.

Schmahmann said their vision is, as kids in their program grow and as they move through their lives, they will always have a place to come back to. Whether it’s holidays or they want to come back to mentor, the door is always open.

“We hope that these people can then come back as serve as mentors and an inspiration.

We want to base our house on consistency and stability. We want it to be a very tight group of people who are a consistent part of the youths’ lives.”

They’ve been busy knocking on doors, talking to anyone in the community who will listen. They’re encouraged by the response so far.

They said the CEED Centre is willing to donate items to help furnish the home.

The Rotary Duck Race is also on board. The Blue Door is helping sell tickets for the annual race, and receives $9 of every $10 ticket it sells.

But ultimately, Schmahmann and Sharma said they need to community to get behind The Blue Door if it’s ever going to open.

“I think the community will realize this is something they can’t ignore.”

The number of thefts from autos the first week of this month in Maple Ridge is twice the average five-year rate for that crime in this area.

RCMP say between March 30 and April 5, 41 cars were broken into in Maple Ridge and 21 in Pitt Meadows.

This March alone saw the highest monthly number of thefts from vehicles since 2008.

But despite the crime wave, thieves are still looking for twobit targets when they break into their cars, often as little as the loose change that’s left inside.

According to Ridge Meadows RCMP, which hosts an auto crime awareness event today (Friday) at Haney Plaza, spare change is the top target when people break into a vehicle.

After that, it’s the old CDs or even books that are rattling around inside the vehicle.

Keys are the most likely to be

targeted in the RCMP’s Top 10 list of targets.

Police say many of the thieves arrive on bicycle or on foot, but also drive.

Three-quarters of the time they wait until after 8 p.m. before breaking in.

The culprits are having an easy time of it.

Two-thirds of the times the vehicles were either unlocked, a window was open, or the thief got in by using a device that can unlock a vehicle’s electronic door locks.

After the top three targets, purses and wallets were the fourth-most likely to be taken.

Next on the list of the most popular targets are personal documents such as vehicle insurance or registration. Tools were next to be stolen followed by identification.

Paradoxically, the three most valuable items a thief could take were the most seldom stolen. Cellphones and MP3 players were the eighth most popular, followed by credit or debit cards, with computers, tablets or iPads last on the list.

Pitt meat company pleads guilty, fined $125,000 Didn’t report test to CFIA B y Phil M elnyc h u k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com

A Pitt Meadows meat company pleaded guilty Monday in New Westminster Supreme Court to unlawfully selling tainted food and was fined $125,000.

Pitt Meadows Meats, also known as the numbered company 0685838 B.C. Ltd., entered the plea on a charge of unlawfully selling food unfit for human consumption.

The charges, under Canada’s Food and Drugs Act, follow a lengthy investigation by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, which was tipped off by a former employee of the company that a batch of beef had tested positive for a deadly bacteria in September 2010, and was not re-

ported.

More than 600 subsequent tests were conducted by CFIA of meat products produced by Pitt Meadows Meats, all of which turned up negative. However, none of the tainted meat was available for testing as it had already been distributed.

According to the CFIA, the plant destroyed some of the meat prior to the recall, while the majority was sold to pet food manufacturers and only a “few kilograms” of the tainted meat were sold in stores for human consumption.

The halal meat packing plant on Ford Road and its subsidiaries, Fraser Valley Meat Supplies and Meadows Valley Meats, were initially facing 11 counts of selling food unfit for human consumption.

But 10 of the charges were stayed and a fine imposed on the 11th

one.

Former employee Dan Land said he followed procedures at the plant. He was in charge of food safety and said he had no opportunity to contaminate daily sampling of meat because he never actually touched the product.

“I never, in any way shape or form, ever contaminated anything. I wouldn’t even dream of it.”

He first heard of the test results after getting a call from a laboratory in Richmond that did the testing. Land said he then called managers about the results and was told they’d look after it.

“I thought for sure they would tell CFIA, but they didn’t do anything.”

A week or two later, Land was fired after being told he didn’t get along with co-workers.

“I really thought that

they told them [the CFIA]. Shortly after he was fired, he contacted CFIA and told them of the test results.

“I’m so glad it’s over.

It’s been five years,” he said.

Following the conviction Monday, Pitt Meadows Meats issued an apology, “for not fully following government procedures in 2010. We accept the decision of the court and pledge to do better.”

The company said it’s already taken several steps, such as implementing in 2012 a computer tracing system that allows quick response time and tracking of products.

The meat facility also has a full-time safety coordinator and does random testing, which is verified by a third party.

“This is also more than government regulations require.”

A few leaks The spill of bunker oil from a grain ship anchored in English Bay in Vancouver last week has resulted in politicians from all three levels of government pointing fingers at each other.

But that doesn’t highlight what should be the real focus of this incident — the ability of government agencies to deal effectively with oil spills.

Much of the opposition to plans to build two new crude oil pipelines to the B.C. coast centres around legitimate concerns about the damage that any oil spill will do to the coast, and to the wildlife in the ocean and onshore.

Most of B.C.’s coast is different than it is in the Lower Mainland. It is steep, rocky, tree-lined and remote. Few people live along the coast. Few people, including most British Columbians, have spent any significant amount of time along it, other than mariners, a few government officials and fishers.

It is, for the most part, pristine and unspoiled wilderness. It is home to an enormous variety of marine life, and to many animals that live on the rich bounty of the sea — eagles, sea otters and orcas, to name just three.

Thus the response to a relatively minor spill of fuel oil has been closely watched — not just by people in Vancouver, who have legitimate concerns about the state of their beaches, but by people from all over the province.

What they have seen has given most of them mixed feelings, at best.

While the Coast Guard moved in and placed booms around the ship the fuel leaked from, that process took six hours — and this for a ship anchored in the harbour where the oil spill response crews are based.

The City of Vancouver was not notified for almost 13 hours after the spill was first reported. It was notified seven or eight hours after the oil spill booms began to be placed. Given the city’s responsibility for parks and beaches along the ocean that are used by thousands of people daily, this is inexcusable.

Political figures from the federal government have yet to speak up and promise that responding to oil spills on the coast is a top priority in Ottawa. It appears they are not. B.C. is seen as a logical place to export crude oil from, and little more.

This incident has raised concerns which have yet to be fully and properly addressed.

And when the ‘Honorable Chamber’ oriented incoming Senators Duffy and Wallin (another TV celebrity turned Conservative Party grandee) the guideline suggested to them in writing was there are essentially neither rules nor oversight about what they could charge to the taxpayer.

Why should someone in, say, Hope be paying taxes so that people in the Metro region can have a good transportation system?

You can buy a house in Hope for $200,000. The same house would cost at least $500,000 in Maple Ridge.

One of the reasons is in Maple Ridge public transportation is available.

If you have a home near SkyTrain, the home is worth even more.

The high value of homes in Metro is based largely due to the benefits of having things like good transportation and not having to drive miles to the town core.

The cost of transportation should be paid by those benefiting from it. It should actually be a property tax based on per cent of home value since those with highest value homes benefit the most.

Should the province also pay your home? It is easy to claim others should pay, but the responsibility should be those who benefit or use.

Why would anyone want to give council another opportunity to pick our pockets for eternity?

Give your head a shake.

I’m dead against having to pay for in-house city garbage collection, or the city contracting out to a service provider.

Carte blanche would be given to council to keep raising our taxes every yearly budget to pay for the collection.

I can see it now if there is a future strike and garbage starts to pile up at the curbs.

Finger-pointing in each and every direction, as it has happened in other municipalities.

On a side note, has the public not noticed the fire department’s budget of three to four years ago, when there were on-call paid volunteers to now fully paid staffed fire halls at a cost of $15-20 million of every yearly budget,

and it keeps going up.

Almost 10 per cent of our total budget.

There was not much public awareness before it was passed by the council of the day. No referendum.

It would be another nail in the coffin of eliminating the last few choices left for us taxpayers, choices of taking care of our own garbage, recycling or hiring a contractor.

“Why should I have garbage pickup forced on me when I don’t want it?”

The status quo bids well of being responsible for managing one’s garbage.

This is another way of you keeping your tax bill lower.

Do we want additional taxes added to our ever increasing tax bill?

I ask council to have the fortitude to reject the lobbying by the garbage pickup crowd once and for all.

Taxes and garbage don’t mix and are to be kept separate.

What part of reduce, reuse and recycle is hard to understand?

It won’t be long before you can’t put food of any type in the garbage, so maybe start changing your ways now, or just pay for it yourself.

Police looking for missing woman Ridge Meadows RCMP are asking for the public’s help in locating 37-year-old Tracey Jean Chambers, who walked away from hospital April 4.

Since that date, police have been able to guess her general location, but she recently relocated somewhere else in Metro Vancouver and police

are looking for the public’s help finding her.

She’s described as white, 5’4” with a medium build, brown eyes and hair with some dark streaks.

She was last seen wearing hospital pyjamas, but it is suspected she has changed out of those clothes. She has other medical issues, and can

become violent. If located, it is requested police be summoned.

Daylight robbery Police are trying to track down a man after a daylight robbery at Staples Business Store on Lougheed Highway and

200th Street, Monday.

Ridge Meadows RCMP Const. Amanda Harnett said a man walked into the store at about 5 p.m., then walked out with a computer.

“As the suspect was leaving the store, he was challenged by an employee who had witnessed the theft. The

male threatened this employee before departing the store with the computer,” Harnett said.

He’s described as a white male, approximately 5’4” and in his mid 30s. He has a stocky build, with short dark brown hair and was seen leaving the parking lot in a mid-sized car, possibly a Honda Accord.

The Chest Clinic in Maple Ridge is seeking participants who are diagnosed with mild asthma. This study is being carried out to see if Symbicort® Turbuhaler® is effective in treating asthma in a new way: used 'as needed' only when compared with two other treatments.

or Jonathan Willcocks, life as a teenager in England was heading in the wrong direction.

At 14, he found himself spiraling downward. But his father knew there was a good person under the rough exterior, and he took him for a threeweek Outward Bound camping and hiking expedition in northern Scotland.

And the first flicker of hope was ignited.

“That was a big turning point in my life. My selfesteem went up,” recalls Willcocks.

But he wasn’t out of the woods yet and his parents decided to take drastic measures. Still at risk, he was sent packing to live with his grandfather in British Columbia.

Quickly, the flicker would become a flame.

“My grandfather ruled the house with an iron fist,” explained Willcocks.

He was quickly exposed to extracurricular activities, as his grandfather wouldn’t settle for idle time. Or freeloading, for that matter.

Willcocks was paying room and board by the time he was in Grade 10.

“It wasn’t much, but it was the principle behind it,” he explained.

By the time he graduated high school and went to the University of Victoria, Willcocks’ life was trending in the right direction. But he never forgot where it was headed.

When he saw an ad for a job as a counsellor at a camp for young offenders, he jumped at the opportunity.

For eight years he dedicated his life to helping kids who were, in essence, like him – kids with promise, but on the wrong path.

At 26, he decided he needed to do more.

That’s when he started Pinnacle Pursuits, a local company specializing in team-building events and meaningful charitychallenge fundraising initiatives.

Progressive delivered a single page sheet to residences this week titled, “You can’t afford publicly funded waste collection.�

Masse expected that by fall the city could be ready to issue a request for proposals so companies could bid on providing garbage collection services.

That would be followed by some sort of public consultation, possibly by referendum or plebiscite, to see if people wanted the service. “If the community says ‘no thanks,’ that’s the way I will go.�

He said asking companies to bid for a contract or give estimates won’t legally obligate the city.

The previous council claimed that to be the case and didn’t invite bids for garbage collection.

According to a recent staff report, Maple Ridge residents on average pay $24 a month or $288 a year for their weekly private collection contracts.

Operating a municipally administered system, in which the city contracts with one company to pick up garbage and green waste city wide is estimated to cost residents between $275 and $300 a year.

Moving to an in-house system, for which city employees collect garbage is expected to cost up to $350 per residence.

INFORMED: Spring Brush Chipping Program It’s Chipping Time for Residents in East Maple Ridge It looks like it’s going to be a nice weekend, so if you live in East Maple Ridge (east of 224 Street) you need to get your yard work done so you can take advantage of the Brush Chipping program. In partnership with the City of Maple Ridge, the Ridge Meadows Recycling Society coordinates the Spring and Fall Brush Chipping Program for Maple Ridge residents. The Brush Chipping Program is a great alternative to burning brush and the Maple Ridge Fire Department strongly encourages citizens to take advantage of this program to keep our air clean and community safe.

No pre-booking is necessary, simply place branches at the roadside adjacent to your property by the set-out deadline for your area.

The set-out deadline is Monday, April 20, for Maple Ridge residents who live EAST of 224 Street.

The program includes pick up and disposal of tree & shrub branches up to a total volume of 3 cubic metres (3 feet x 3 feet x 9 feet). Branches may be up to 150 mm (6 inches) in diameter. No construction waste, building materials, stumps, leaves, branches with thorns (eg. rose bushes, blackberries), vines (including willow branches), bamboo, root balls, or household waste will be permitted.

Conservationists say federal fishery managers allowed serious overfishing of Fraser River sockeye salmon last summer and too few fish spawned as a result.

And they say a continued policy of allowing overly aggressive commercial fishing threatens to wallop vulnerable salmon runs again this summer.

Last year saw a large run of 20 million sockeye but Watershed Watch Salmon Society executive director Aaron Hill said the number that actually spawned ended up 1.4 million below the target of 7.3 million set by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

The spawning short-

fall would have been nearly three million or 41 per cent below the target had fishermen taken all the sockeye they’d been allocated. “Big catches were obviously the big priority for our federal government, not prudent management,� Hill said.

The endangered Cultus Lake sockeye and Interior coho runs were among the stocks that fell dangerously short of their spawning targets last year, he said, raising doubts about the strength of future generations.

Salmon from weak runs return intermingled with the strong stocks and can get hammered as an unintended bycatch unless fishing is carefully restrained to ensure conservation.

Last year DFO riled First Nations and conservationists when it quadrupled the maximum catch by Canadian fishermen of the

coho run – from four per cent in previous years to 16 per cent – effectively sacrificing more threatened coho so abundant sockeye could be caught.

This year’s fishing plan would maintain the same higher limits set last year.

Hill said that’s a bad idea, since this year’s sockeye run is projected to be lower at around seven million and environmental conditions appear troubling. “They can’t even get it right in years of good abundance,� Hill said. “This year we’re looking at a massive unprecedented warming event in the north Pacific, record low snowpacks and concerns about marine productivity in general. It’s too risky.�

A large pink salmon run is also expected this year and there’s growing evidence that competition from pinks for food at sea is hurting sockeye

survival.

Stu Cartwright, DFO’s acting area director for the B.C. Interior, defended DFO’s plans, adding they are carefully designed to manage stocks in a way that supports conservation and sustainability while maximizing fishing opportunities for First Nations, commercial and recreational fisheries.

Bob McKamey, vicepresident of the Area E Gillnetters Association, said last year’s fishery was well managed and there was “ample evidence� to support the reduced protection for weak stocks.

In previous years, he said, too many sockeye were allowed to spawn, creating excessive competition among juveniles. “There was no end of evidence to indicate that exploitation rates were too low and that overspawning was the problem in a lot of areas.�

Road trips to U.S. down Drop mirrors dive in dollar

Fewer B.C. residents are driving into the U.S. now that the loonie no longer goes as far south of the border.

New data for January, February and March from the Canada Border Services Agency shows there were nearly 14 per cent fewer trips by southbound Canadians at Lower Mainland land border crossings compared to the same months of 2014, and a nearly 20 per cent drop from 2013.

The loss of appetite for cross-border shopping was most apparent at the Aldergrove crossing, where trips were down 32 per cent from a year ago, and at AbbotsfordHuntington, which was down 18 per cent, while the decline was about eight per cent at the Peace Arch and Point Roberts crossings.

“This is tough sledding for the Whatcom County guys,” SFU marketing professor Lindsay Meredith said. “They’ll be suffering big time.”

Retailers in northern Washington depend heavily on Lower Mainland shoppers, he said, and their local governments, in turn, need the resulting flow of sales taxes to maintain services.

He noted the drop in southbound road trips closely mirrors the dive of the Canadian dollar.

The loonie is currently worth just over 80 cents U.S. and has dipped to as low as 78 in recent weeks.

That’s a 12 per cent drop from 91 cents U.S. a year ago.

Last year was the first year since 2009 that the loonie spent much time below 90 cents and it was close to par for much of 2010 through 2013.

Meredith said the shift is good for Canadian businesses that now face less intense competition from U.S. retailers.

It may also mean more tax revenue for the province and even TransLink through its gas tax if B.C. families shop closer to home.

“Some of the tax dollars that used to go south and support their infrastructure will be staying here

to support Canada,” Meredith said.

He also predicts a good year for tourism operators in B.C. as more Americans head north to take advantage of their strong greenback.

Tourism Vancouver has already recorded an 8.2 per cent increase in U.S. overnight visitors to Metro Vancouver in January.

Startup said he’s less sure Americans will come north because of the dollar differential, noting they don’t follow currency changes as closely as Canadians.

“It’s interesting that when the Americans have got massive spending power in relation to the Canadian dollar, it seems to be less of an incentive for them,” he said.

and purchase goods and often don’t realize how much further their dollars go.”

Startup said the decline in crossings isn’t surprising and added the drop in the dollar is clearly the main reason.

Two other factors influence cross-border shopping – the ongoing advance of online retailing and the growth in foreign retailers operating in Canada.

Transit plebiscite count climbs More than 235,000 ballots have now been received by Elections B.C. in the Metro Vancouver transit referendum, or 15.1 per cent of all ballots sent out.

That count, as of April 15, consists of ballots that have been through the initial screening process at Elections B.C., but doesn’t include others that have been received but not yet opened.

Vancouver and Surrey together account for more than half of the ballots received so far.

The return rate in Vancouver is 23.4 per cent, followed by 15.9 per cent in White Rock.

Surrey’s rate is 14.1 per cent and most of Metro’s other medium and large cities have return rates of 11 to 15 per cent.

Vancouver and Surrey were expected to dominate the count initially, because that’s where ballots were first mailed.

Snow levels low Southwestern B.C. snowpack levels continue to be extremely low, according to the latest readings from B.C.’s River Forecast Centre.

The snow content in the alpine was 13 per cent on the South Coast, 26 per cent in the Lower Fraser and 15 per cent on Vancouver Island as of April 1.

The lack of alpine snow makes spring flooding less likely, but could mean difficult conditions for returning salmon, dangerously dry forests during wild-

fire season and potential water use restrictions in some areas.

The centre said temperatures were one to three degrees above normal along the coast in March and three to five degrees above normal in the Interior.

Measles cases grow Eleven measles cases in Metro Vancouver are now linked to an infected passenger who flew on a March 21 Air China flight from Beijing to Vancouver.

Officials with the B.C. Centre for Disease Control say all cases confirmed so far are people who were either on the original flight or in contact with someone who had been.

The Vancouver Regional Construction Association said the outlook is generally positive, citing record low mortgage rates, an improving regional economy and rising population growth as favourable conditions for more new building investment.

Support for merging in Metro

A new poll has found nearly three quarters of Metro Vancouver residents think the region should be reorganized into fewer municipalities, but there’s no agreement on how far any amalgamation attempt should go.

Just 14 per cent of those surveyed by the Angus Reid Institute supported merging all 24 local governments into a single Metro Vancouver super-city, while 26 per cent would keep all the existing municipalities, and the rest are split between other options to redraw boundaries.

The survey found 33 per cent think two to five cities could serve the region well, while 13 per cent said it would take six to 15 and another 15 per cent suggested 16 to 23.

As for how regional government should work, 41 per cent support the current system of electing local mayors and councillors, who then represent their municipalities at the Metro Vancouver regional district board.

Another 31 per cent preferred a directly elected regional board that deals with select issues, but leaves most matters to local councils.

Pollsters said the results show little consensus and only modest appetite for change.

Residents of smaller and mid-sized cities within Metro Vancouver tended to be less supportive of amalgamating municipalities than residents of Vancouver or Surrey.

Respondents were evenly split on whether policing should be regionalized, ending the patchwork of municipal police and RCMP detachments.

But most agreed other services like transportation and economic development should be regionally delivered, while services like libraries, parks and fire departments should be left to local municipalities. A smaller majority of 57 per cent saw social housing as a regional responsibility as well.

Amalgamation was discussed in some municipalities in last November’s civic elections – some areas like North Vancouver and Langley are split into a city and a district or township – but there has been no serious push to pursue it.

Spring is the season most move

hile there are many reasons to look forward to spring in the North Fraser region, one that often makes this season tough to take — moving.

Whether it’s to downsize, buy or sell a home, or rent an apartment, spring is the season most people move into new digs.

But there are ways to make the big change a little easier on everyone involved.

Perhaps the easiest way to do that is to hire professional movers, pack up your belongings, then let the pros do the lifting.

But if professional movers are too expensive an option for you, then you’ll likely depend on friends and family members to give you a hand on moving day.

And friends or family who are willing to give up their free time to help you move have to be treated right to make an otherwise arduous task a little more fun for you and them.

Moving is one of the biggest household tasks there is. But if you can get a head start, and stay organized, you should make it through this enormous process unscathed and ready to enjoy your new home.

So do some preliminary groundwork ahead of time to ensure the day runs smoothly and confusion-free.

Sending out a request for help, to as many folks as you can, is a good way to line up your help. The more who show up, the easier the day will be for everyone involved. You can send polite reminders, and promise good food, drinks, as well as your services in return.

Here are some moving tips to help your move goes efficiently: • Organize early: avoid leaving anything till the last minute.

Unless you have to pack up and leave in a hurry, chances are you have 30-60 days to formulate a plan and ensure you’re your moving day runs smoothly. Create a countdown list and itemize everything you need to accomplish week by week.

You may be able to get away with making more than one trip if you’re only moving a short distance. But you’ll need to ensure you have the right size of truck to carry your belongings if you’re only making one trip a longer distance.

Generally speaking, the contents of bachelor or one-bedroom apartment will fit

in a 16-foot cube truck, which available at your local rental company. But two to three fully furnished bedrooms will require a 24- to 26-foot truck to do your move in one load. The contents of most houses can be moved in the same 24-foot truck with one or two trips.

• Communicate with movers: boxes are one thing, but when you get to the big, heavy stuff, it’s important to let your movers know what to expect.

Explain all the requirements and expectations prior to booking your mover.

They have to be aware of all the details in

order to estimate your total move time and cost, and have proper equipment available.

That includes informing the company about any overweight items (like a piano or a fridge), access restrictions (elevators, walkup only, narrow driveways) and whether you’ll need help disassembling or assembling furniture.

This represents just the beginning of your move planning. More tips will be offered in two weeks.

Maple Ridge’s Maggie Coles-Lyster used her home field advantage to place second at the 2015 edition of Jeremy’s Roubaix.

The 12th edition of the race featured 150 of B.C.’s toughest riders taking on the back roads and dikes in Pitt Meadows.

“Riders not only had to battle the tough gravel section of the course, but when the winds and rain hit, staying warm became a new challenge,” said race director Barry Lyster.

Jeremy’s Roubaix was the first race in Cyclying B.C.’s Premier Road Series, which consists of seven events in B.C., including Race the Ridge.

Coles-Lyster was one of four riders to take an early lead early in the 80-km category 1, 2, 3 women’s race.

However, Kelsey MacDonald of team Giant Vancouver was first off the dikes on the final lap and rode to victory in front of Coles-Lyster and Kristine Brynjolfson of Women’s Team Attack.

The category 1, 2 men saw a strong group of riders stay away for the majority of the race.

The midget Royals squad began the tournament with a double-header, losing the first one to the Sherwood Park Dukes 2-0.

General manager Nor Ljunggren said his team had plenty of opportunities to score, but stranded 10 runners after allowing two unearned runs in a shaky first inning.

In the second game, the Royals faced the North Shore Jr. Twins and battled to a 3-3 tie.

The West Coast Auto Group Football Club U18 Metro select girls’ advanced to the league quarter-finals after a dramatic overtime shootout win over Coquitlam 1-0 last weekend.

The U18 Metro select girls team joins a record number from WCAGFC that made the playoffs and is just one 11 to have advanced to the quarter-finals.

“This has been one of

the best seasons ever for our soccer club, both on and off the pitch,” said Dan Mikolay, president of WCAGFC. “On the pitch, our technical team and more than 200 volunteer parent coaches have done an amazing job. From the advancements in skill development within our youngest players through to the playoff success of our competitive teams, it has been a historic season.”

He said the club is also experiencing incredible

Mikolay said the WCAGFC spring programs have grown another 300 to 400 players this season, approaching 1,500 participants in total.

“Those numbers are starting to rival the over 3,000 players who participate in the fall/winter programs,” he said.

All quarter-final matches take place this weekend. West Coast will host three matches on Saturday.

The U16 boys get the

ball rolling against Coquitlam Metro Ford Apollo at Westview secondary at 2:20 p.m., followed by the U17 boys taking on the North Vancouver Fury at 4:30 p.m.

The men’s division premier team rounds out the day with a 6 p.m. start time against Langley Hurricanes at Pitt Meadows secondary.

Ljunggren said the team came out with a strong effort in the morning, thumping the Calgary Blues Team 2, 6-1.

Trevor Reed went six innings allowing only two hits while striking out nine.

In the afternoon, the Royals edged the White Rock Jr. Tritons 5-4 to clinch a spot in the semifinals.

However, the midget Royals were trounced 10-2 by the eventual tournament champion, the Calgary Blues Team 1.

In bantam, the Royals started the tournament with a sloppy defensive match-up against the Prince George Knights on Friday. The Royals’ committed a number of errors early in the game, paving the way for a 13-1 drubbing at the hands of the Knights.

Day 2 saw a much different team offensively, as the bantam Royals’ bats erupted in a footballlike 18-17 win over the Okotoks Dawgs.

Nick Baust played the hero, hitting a walk-off single to secure the win.

In the final game of the round robin, the Royals bats stayed hot as they tied the White Rock Tritons 12-12.

The tie game secured a semi-finals rematch with the Tritons.

The Royals played much better defence and had their strongest pitching performance of the tournament, but were only able to muster two runs as they fell 4-2.

They finished off the weekend by dropping the third-place game, 10-9 to the Okotoks Dawgs.

IN MEMORIAM In Loving Memory of

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Don - Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great - Grandfather. He passed away in the early morning of April 7th at Ridge Meadows Hospital, and he is survived by his loving wife Juel, son’s Derek (Maureen) and Mitch, 5 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents Gottlieb (Alf) Breu in 1983 and Olive Breu in 1985 and his daughter Roxanne in 2010.

Don was born in Edmonton but moved to Maple Ridge in 1951 where he resided until his death. He spent all his free time volunteering and coaching minor baseball. He was actively involved in the Ridge Meadows Baseball Association, in roles ranging from coaching to president of RMBA. In later years he enjoyed going to baseball games with his wife Juel and in 1977 the Don Breu Invitational Tournament was created.

Don and Juel attended almost every game where Don would throw out the first pitch and sign the homerun balls for the players. Don was also actively involved in bringing girls softball to east Maple Ridge, he also enjoyed watching his sons

A memorial service will be held on Saturday April 25th, 2015 at 1:00 pm at the Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church, 12145 Laity Street, Maple Ridge. In lieu of flowers, donations to BC Cancer Society is appreciated.
