We are all becoming more conscientious, not only of the environment, but of what we are putting into our bodies. The trend of growing it yourself or buying locally is becoming bigger and bigger.

With that being the case across Canada, it only makes sense that the brilliant people breeding and developing new plants are coming up with ones that are not only easier to grow, but made for small spaces and areas. This makes them ideal for newer housing developments and apartments. If you are fortunate enough to have a large gardening area, new flavour and healthier choices are exciting as well. And let's face it, if you grow it and pick it, it just simply tastes better and is fun for the whole family.

Since there are a ton of new veggies we are growing this year, this article is part one of three. Watch next week for part two and the following week for part three.

These are some of the new veggies we are growing this year: 1. Cauliflower "Cheddar": Not only is this a cool orange colour, but it is also extremely good for you. It contains 25 times more beta carotene than regular white cauliflower. It matures in 68 days, has domed heads about 4-7 inches and is a vigorous plant. It is easy to grow and stays orange even after cooking. Plant them about 18 inches apart.

2. Cauliflower "Graffiti": This variety is ready a little later, maturing in about 80 days. It produces vigorous, large heads that are deep purple and hold their colour even after cooking. It is extremely hardy and easy to grow. This one is great for kids because of the colour.

3. Eggplant "Fairytale": These are tender, plump little marvels. They are short and have tender fruit with purple and white marbled skin tones. They grow in clusters of six fruit of about 5" x 1" in size.

They are very compact plants, so they are ideal for containers or small gardens. They have a delicious creamy flavour and are mature in 50 days.

4.Eggplant "Patio Baby": This is a very early and productive variety. The plants are very compact, again making them ideal for containers or small spaces. The deep purple, egg shaped fruit should be harvested at baby size of 2-3 inches. They are delicious roasted or in dips. The thornless leaves allow for an easy harvest which is ideal for kids.

5. Basil "Ruby and Emerald Frills": These two new varieties are very vigorous. As the name dictates, Ruby is red and Emerald is green. And yes, they have pretty, frilly leaves. What makes this variety nice is not only their delicious sweet basil taste, but these are very vigorous plants. They grow to be 16-18 inches tall. These new beauties also flower late allowing for an extended harvest time. They are easy to grow, but watch the cold.

All basil varieties hate cold and damp conditions.

So these are the new varieties we will cover this week. To have success growing veggies or herbs, just remember: They love sun. Your spot should have a minimum of 6 hours of sunlight a day. The more the merrier.

All of these plants need a good quality food. I always make sure that the soil in my garden is amended with manures and compost every year.

A new soil for this year is My Soil Organic Potting Mix. It’s ALL organic with Coco fiber, Fish compost, and Kelp plus more; making it loaded with nutrients. I also use a good quality water soluble fertilizer like our Nurseryland Tomato food weekly, or even up to three times weekly, depending on the crop and pot size. It may say Tomato food, but is good for all kinds of crops. If in doubt, just ask one of us if it is a good choice for you. Also new for this year is Real McKoy organic fertilizer.

It’s a high potent organic fertilizer that is great and safe for gardens. Stay tuned for part two next week... we will be talking Squash!

B.C. Views: Treaty cash cow may dry up

by Tom Fletcher The B.C. Treaty Commission and its federal and provincial financiers put on a brave show last week, celebrating a “milestone” in negotiations for a modern treaty with five Vancouver Island First Nations.

A regional group representing the Songhees, Beecher Bay, T’Souke, Malahat and SnawNaw-As (Nanoose) First Nations have reached the “agreement in principle” stage of negotiations with Canada and B.C., after 20 years of treaty talks.

This is similar to the treaty finalized in 2007 with another five-member Vancouver Island group called Maa-Nulth First Nations. The Te’mexw Treaty Association agreed to accept 1,565 hectares of provincial Crown land and $142 million in federal cash to settle its historic aboriginal title.

Alas, agreement in principle is but the fourth of sixth stages.

Now a platoon of lawyers takes over from the roomful of negotiators to produce the final legal text. It will be years before this treaty can be presented to the B.C. legislature and the House of Commons in Ottawa, if it ever is.

viewed the same again after the release of federal treaty advisor Doug Eyford’s report last month. The Te’mexw event seemed to have an extra urgency after Eyford’s observation that much of this costly activity has become a job creation program for those involved.

These Vancouver Island communities deserve credit for setting aside their own territorial disputes. It’s more than most have done.

Eyford concluded after a long summer of meetings last year that many treaty negotiation teams in this province and across the country show no such inclination.

In B.C. and elsewhere in Canada, there is a “conspicuous lack of urgency in negotiations” and “sharp divisions” between parties, most of which have been at the table for a decade or more, Eyford found.

This is what has come to be known as the “aboriginal industry,” where lawyers and consultants have a seemingly endless supply of lucrative work, much of it of questionable value.

For some aboriginal participants, attending treaty meetings year after year is the best paying job they have ever had.

Indeed, a common feature of the province’s dealings with aboriginal communities is that their leaders demand meetings, and then demand to be paid to attend them.

This latest Vancouver Island treaty, assuming it is ever finalized, would at least in part replace the Douglas Treaties, signed by B.C.’s

colonial governor James Douglas in the 1850s.

These treaties around Fort Victoria were quickly concluded if nothing else. The Beecher Bay Band was paid 45 pounds, 10 shillings for most of Sooke and another 43 pounds and change for its Metchosin territory.

One of the biggest missing pieces in the latest agreement in principle is the share of federally-regulated fisheries.

This has been a theme of B.C. Treaty Commission reports in recent years, as Ottawa holds up treaties for years because it is unable or unwilling to offer shares of salmon in particular.

Hunting and fishing rights are acknowledged even in historic treaties, and reaffirmed by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Sharing these rights while maintaining conservation of fish stocks has been more than Ottawa, and in some cases neighbouring aboriginal communities, have been able to manage.

Eyford’s findings, and the B.C. government’s sudden refusal to keep staffing a B.C. Treaty Commission that shows so little progress, have sent one overdue message.

If participants aren’t prepared to make real compromises and show a willingness to conclude agreements rather than drag them out, they should leave and come back when they are ready to do so.

Imagine a quiet, peaceful neighbourhood where we can all sit out on our decks or in our backyards and unwind and get rid of the stress from the week of hard work, not get more stress from the disturbances of dogs barking excessively or a noisy vehicle. two types of solar technology. The use of the two technologies allows the system to pull in as much heat as possible but also provides added educational benefits for students as they are able to learn about both approaches to producing solar energy.

Jonathan White, a student in the Environmental Studies certificate program at the College, has been helping out with the installation with contractor Scott Graham of Renew Energy. He has found the experience to be exceptionally valuable.

“I needed to take part in an environmental project for my program. Helping with the solar project at the College was a fantastic and unique opportunity. I was able to get excellent hands-on experience and thoroughly enjoyed taking part – and taking in the wonderful views from the rooftop,” he says.

“This project shows initiative by the College to work toward being a more sustainable operation. I hope they will be seen as a leader inspiring others to do their bit for the planet.”

The solar technology being used for the residence heats water which is then pumped into tanks that store the heat. The water in those tanks is used to heat hot water in the residence building. The fully-automated process allows Knibbs to track the efficiency of the system and monitor the savings in heating costs.

This is the second solar project at the College.

The Pinnacle Hall building, used for some of the College’s trades programs, has a solar wall along one side. That solar air wall helps to draw heat into the building, improving indoor air quality and reducing its heating and operating costs.

Plans are underway for another of the main campus buildings, Summit Hall, to have solar photovoltaic (PV) installed this summer which will generate solar-powered electricity and share it with the grid. College electrical students will have full access to that project during their studies.

Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce 2015 Business Excellence Awards The Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce handed out the 2015 Business Excellence Awards this past Saturday at a sold out gala event at the St. Eugene Golf Resort & Casino.

Awards went out in eleven categories representing excellence in business across the entire cross section of the Cranbrook economy.

Chamber president Dave Struthers was extremely pleased with this year’s

awards process. “The staff, in consultation with Chamber volunteers, came together in a collaborative manner to align the awards to reflect the makeup of our business community”, said Struthers.

“The addition of the nominees being interviewed by a three person jury panel was very well received. It put a lot of legitimacy to the awards by removing less than subjective public voting.”

Skin Flick promises 50 shades of funny at the Studio Stage Door The final production of Cranbrook Community Theatre’s (CCT) season featuring plays

by Canadian playwrights ends with Skin Flick, a comedic romp written by Norm Foster.

This hilarious oneliner comedy features a married couple and their friend united by unfortunate circumstance. When Rollie

and Daphne suddenly lose their jobs and are facing unemployment, an opportunity presents itself that they just can’t refuse. Making a “skin flick” or adult film might not be the first thing that newly jobless professionals decide to throw their last remaining funds into, but after discovering how lucrative the porn

industry is, they decide to go for it. With their crude yet savvy cameraman friend, Alex, Rollie and Daphne recruit improbable movie stars in Byron, an awkward bookie, and Jill, a feisty telegram performer.

Norm Foster creatively uses Rollie’s character to narrate parts of the story for the audience. Despite the title

of the play, there’s no nudity involved in Skin Flick; rather, Foster uses innuendo and suggestion to tell his tale which results in more than a few laugh-outloud moments.

SCRAP-IT announced its new S C RAP-IT incentive program in Driveway just before the show. It’s offering a $3,000 rebate for electric car purchasers if they scrap a year 2000 or older vehicle.

This is in addition to the newly announced provincial government program.

SCRAP-IT Program CEO Dennis Rogoza revealed: “Vehicles model 2000 or older emit up to 60 times more emissions than later models and electric vehicles have even much lower emissions.”

This particular Journey is a much better looking vehicle than I had anticipated and I’m impressed with how it has evolved since its introduction in 2009. But it’s not just looks alone that make this crossover one of the best selling products in the Dodge lineup, and one that has earned numerous accolades.

Inside, a visually stimulating cabin also welcomes the driver and passengers.

First off, leather seats with sport mesh inserts come standard. Then you have Liquid Graphite appliques, a 213.4mm (8.4-inch) Uconnect touchscreen and a power driver’s seat and passenger fold flat seat with in-seat storage.

The in-seat storage is a feature I found exceptionally handy, particularly when I wanted to tuck away some miscellaneous items I purchased along the road. Or I

Along the undulating SoCal roads, it was quite handy to have the 3.6L, Pentastar V6 engine under its hood for that extra bit of power I used climbing hills. It comes with a healthy helping of 283 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque and is matched with a six-speed automatic transmission that shifts with ease and smoothness.

Additionally, the Crossroad version has a temperate nature and one that is pleasant to drive for long hauls. It absorbs road imperfections without jarring the passengers inside.

The only snag comes when you want to accelerate quickly to pass someone. There’s a generous helping of torque steer so make sure you give yourself enough room in the lane to accommodate for it.

Yes, it’s an all-wheel drive, so it’s not, by nature, prone to this type of action, but this particular vehicle was.

Despite its size, it doesn’t feel like a chore to manouevre.

Just as the Dynamiters really stepped up this season, Bull-ARama has also upped its game.

This year trick rider Shelby Cummings will be on hand as well as a new clown coming from Merritt. There will also be new pyrotechnics to open the event with a bang.

“Then we have the kids’ sheep riding and some of the top bull riders coming in,” said Thompson.

“There is going to be 30 of the best bull riders from Alberta and BC. We will also have 50 bulls.”

OBITUARY Margaret Beth Kraft (nee Perry) August 27, 1924-April 9, 2015 Margaret Beth Kraft (nee Perry) died peacefully at the age of 90 at Jubilee Manor in Nelson, BC on April 9, 2015.

She was born August 27, 1924, at the family farm near Lewvan, Saskatchewan. She recalled her life on the farm with her parents and seven siblings as a very busy and happy time despite the challenges of the depression and years of drought.

Mom enlisted in the Canadian Women's Army Corps at the age of 18 and served her country first in Vermillion, Alberta, then Ottawa, and finally Shilo, Manitoba. It was in Shilo that she met her soon-to-be husband, Dave Kraft, a dashing young paratrooper who would occasionally jump out of airplanes in fright (sic).

Dave remained in the army after the war and he and Beth raised their children Perry (Elly Opdenkelder), Brenda (Al Craft), and Candace (George Stuckert) while enjoying postings in Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick and Alberta.

When they retired, Beth and Dave spent a summer traveling through British Columbia searching for the ideal place to begin the next phase of their lives. They chose to settle in Creston, BC. It was surrounded by mountains which Dave loved but also had a wide, open valley to remind Beth of the prairies. Dave got a job with the BC Forest Service and began a second career as a lookout man on Thompson mountain and then later in the field of silviculture. Beth was always busy tending a large garden in the summer and taking care of their fruit trees. Camping with their children and grandchildren was always a favourite activity. Both Beth and Dave were delighted with their eight grandchildren: Dorian (Amy), Ryan (Kendra), Tom, Katie (Dean), Johann, David (Cari), Luke and Adam.
