50-bed mental health facility on the way Project close to Abbotsford hospital

A facility providing 50 mental health care beds will be constructed in Abbotsford, potentially opening in 2016.

The project came to light at a meeting of the city’s homelessness action

advisory committee last Thursday, on which Fraser Health has a representative.

Many details about the project are still forthcoming, according to Tasleem Juma, senior public affairs consultant with Fraser Health, who said it is “something we are working on as part

of our role in the larger task force on homelessness.”

Provincial agency BC Housing is a partner in the project and confirmed that it will be located at 33134 Marshall Rd., near the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre.

Abbotsford-Mission’s rate of police officers per 100,000 population is among the lowest one-third of census metropolitan areas (CMA) in Canada.

A report called “Police resources in Canada, 2014� – released Monday by Statistics Canada – indicates that the Abbotsford-Mission CMA has a rate of 148 officers per 100,000 population, putting it 22nd on the list of 33 CMAs, ranked from highest to lowest.

The top five CMAs are Winnipeg with a rate of 191, followed by Thunder Bay (187), Montreal (186), Regina (177) and Windsor (176).

At the bottom of the list is Saguenay, Que., with 106 officers per 100,000 people.

The Abbotsford-Mission CMA is listed as having 262 officers. Of those, 212 work for the Abbotsford Police Department and the remainder are with the Mission RCMP. It specifies that factors contributing to differences in the rates include police

services’ priorities, policies, procedures and enforcement practices, as well as the availability of resources.

Ian MacDonald said he believes local residents are pleased with the job the APD is doing, based on comments received directly from people as well as the results of two citizen satisfaction surveys conducted by University of the Fraser Valley.

The first survey was done in 2010, with 93 per cent of respondents indicating they were satisfied with the APD. That

number rose to 95 per cent when the second survey was conducted in 2012.

MacDonald said a higher rate of officers doesn’t necessarily equate to better policing. “What we think is more important is do citizens feel they’re getting an effective police service,� he said.

He said people will always want more officers, but limited budgets mean police agencies have to learn to work effectively with given resources.

MacDonald said the way APD handles non-emergency calls is an example. In the past, patrol officers would have been assigned to go in person to such calls, tying up valuable resources for more urgent matters. Now these less urgent files are handled by a general investigation section, which initially handles the reports over the phone to determine whether a follow-up interview is required in person.

The report indicates there were almost 69,000 police officers across the nation and approximately 8,700 in B.C. in 2014.

Cars line the streets around Robert Bateman middle school, indicative of secondary suites and children in their late teens, but Kelly Foster remembers when the area was full of young families.

Many of the kids that once crowded the streets have left the nest, with those still in the neighbourhood finishing up at the secondary school.

So when Foster, who runs a business out of his home, learned his neighbourhood had been labelled “Aging in Suburbia� by a marketing firm’s algorithm, the 52-yearold couldn’t disagree.

Environics Analytics’s algorithm pegs postal codes around the country to one of 68 different “segments.� It described “Aging in Suburbia� neighbourhoods like the Fosters’ as such: “Once filled with young child-rearing families, this segment is now a sign of the times: home to a mix of older couples aging in place and middle-aged families still raising children and building nest eggs.�

While the segment encompasses just two per cent of Canadian households, it’s by far the largest in Abbotsford, where it comprises 18 per cent of homes, according to the company.

Danton Jennex said the formula got his Clearbrook neighbourhood, near Old Yale Road, about half right.

He lives in an area defined as “Lunch at Tims,� by the Environics algorithm. Such neighbourhoods are supposedly “tight-knit communities� consisting of “downscale singles and families,� with an inclination for eating at burger joints, delis, fish and chip restaurants and coffee shops like Tim Horton’s.

Jennex, who lives on his own and rents while working at a metal fabricating shop, said his own neighbourhood is a mix of residents. “It seems like everyone has their own thing going on,� he said. While some houses are in need of maintenance, many others have been renovated recently, including some since the last census was performed.

Danny Heuman, Evironics Analytics’ vice-president of marketing and development, pegged the accuracy rate of the system at around 80 per cent. Anomalies or fast-changing neighbourhoods could throw things off, but Heuman is otherwise confident that the program can accurately determine the average resident for most Canadian neighbourhoods. “What we’re looking for is a classification that ‌ captures the average person,â€? he said.

That property is the former home of the Abbotsford Hospice Society, which is now in temporary office space on Simon Avenue until its offices move into Holmberg House adult hospice next to the hospital when that project is complete.

Juma explained the mental health facility will provide replacement beds for the Sunrise Care Home, which closed a few years ago. The Sunrise special care facility had 30 beds to treat clients referred from Abbotsford Mental Health, according to the 2009 Abbotsford social housing inventory.

“These are beds that were in Abbotsford. Clients had been relocated to other facilities either in Abbotsford or in the region, and these are beds that would then potentially replace those...”

A online request for proposals referred to the project as a facility with about 20 assisted living units and 30 licensed beds. It said the facility would be operated by the MPA Society, “a recognized leader in community mental health service program delivery.”

It states that the funding will be provided by Fraser Health, with the site owned by the Provincial Rental Housing Corporation.

David MacIntyre, executive director of the MPA Society, told The News they will be the operator

of the project.

He said licensed care is the highest level of care in the mental health community, “so that means nursing support, medication, administrations, meals.”

Residents in the assisted living units are provided with one meal a day, but their living situation is more independent, he said.

Combining the two levels of care allows people “as they progress and stabilize and improve, to move to a lower level of care to try and promote independence,” said MacIntyre.

MPA Society has been operating mental health housing for 44 years, he said, and runs facilities around the Lower Mainland.

The project is a ground-up construction, expected to open in 2016.

“It will be beneficial to the community – it’s bringing services back into the community,” said Juma.

The mandate of the homelessness action advisory committee is to provide advice to council on homelessness issues and provide oversight on an action plan, which was approved last year.

It lists establishing a mental health and addictions facilities in Abbotsford, with a minimum of 50 beds, as a priority for the city.

Mental health issues are a key factor in homelessness, and are related to a significant percentage of police calls and emergency room visits.

The city has appointed Dena Kae Beno to the position of homelessness co-ordinator for the City of Abbotsford, starting on April 27.

Beno has been the affordable housing co-ordinator for over five years for the City of Richmond.

She has managed their home-

lessness and affordable housing portfolio, including capital projects, policy development and the Richmond Homelessness Coalition facilitation.

The city announced the creation of the homelessness co-ordinator position following recommendations made by the civic

task force on homelessness last year.

A city report stated that the intent is not to replicate the work done by local service providers, but to liaise with government, non-profits and other stakeholders, as well as seek funding sources for the city.

Abbotsford’s Future Shop is permanently closed following the announcement Saturday that parent company Best Buy would shut down about half of the Future Shop stores across Canada.

Best Buy said it was closing 66 stores and converting another 65 to the Best Buy brand.

Spokesperson Elliott Chun confirmed for The News that the Abbotsford Future Shop would not re-open. There is already a Best Buy outlet in Abbotsford, also on South Fraser Way, about a block away from the Future Shop store.

Best Buy said the closures would result in the loss of 500 full-time and more than 1,000 parttime jobs across the country. Chun did not say how many jobs would disappear in Abbotsford, but the average number of positions lost per closed store is slightly more than 20.

Best Buy noted that “a significant number of its Future Shop and Best Buy stores are located adjacent to each other, often in the same parking lot.”

The company will now have a total of 192 locations across Canada, including 136 large-format stores and 56 Best Buy Mobile stores.

“Currently, 80 per cent of our customers are within a 15-minute drive to a store and this won’t change,” said Ron Wilson, President and COO of Best Buy Canada. “We will continue to have a strong store presence in all major markets in Canada.”

Homeless camp under overpass hasn’t impacted structural integrity: ministry Alex BUTLER Abbotsford News

A homeless camp under Highway 1 at Riverside Road has generated a number of public complaints about the accumulation of trash as well as the safety of the bridge, due to the occupants digging into the slope.

In response to emailed questions from The News, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure says it is taking the “appropriate steps to ensure the safety of the travelling public is maintained.”

A statement from the ministry said that a site and bridge inspection was recently completed, which “noted some change to the soil slopes at the west end of the overpass.”

Other Hand The call for change and cost-saving was renewed Monday evening thanks to a smartphone text message from my sister.

“If she can do it, why can’t you?” was the response from my home bill-payer.

My sister declared in the text “I’ve cancelled the house phone.” She will now receive communications only through her cell phone, something that has been argued for in this house for some time.

The reason, put bluntly to me, is “no one ever calls on the land-line anymore, except for telemarketers,” along with, I might add, wrong numbers that invariably ring the phone at 3 a.m. or thereabouts.

It is rare for someone under 40 to have a land-line these days. Change is slow for

those over a certain age as we cling to the notion that others may want to find us, and that the first course of action is to look us up in the phone book.

But even that source of information is rapidly diminishing in size because they don’t include cell phone numbers.

I can’t remember (other than a call last week from someone older than me) who has contacted me in years, based on the directory.

Then my angst at disappearing into the ether was assuaged somewhat by checking my listing in the phone book. There, under my home number is listed “Mark’s FAX line.” I cancelled that number years ago, and haven’t had a fax machine for a decade or more.

As for sending documents, it’s now easy to scan them to email and print at your leisure, never worrying that the information hasn’t arrived due to the fax machine running out of paper or ink.

Why pay for any service that is rarely used has been the argument presented to me lately. Additionally, with the bundled

On the other hand, I have been told reducing access to high-speed internet is not an option in our household.

The inter-connectivity with the world and all the information it offers is not, like the phone directory, a closed book.

So with the sound of saving money and eliminating annoying telemarketers, I am being dragged, not necessarily kicking and screaming, into the new age of communications.

As for contacting me when my name no longer appears in the phone book and you don’t have my cell number, there’s the internet or email, the address of which is readily available at the bottom of this column or online. letters Abbotsford’s angels I have lived in Abbotsford for 20 years and until this week I wouldn’t have ever said that I was proud to live here.

But on March 25 at 4:35 p.m. I witnessed a accident on Sumas Road just before the lights that merge onto the Mission Hwy. My vehicle was directly behind the lady whose car lost control and flipped over and landed upside down in the ditch submerged in water.

Within seconds a number of amazing brave people jumped out of their cars in the pouring rain to help get this woman out of her upside down car.

Young men running with no jackets on and a women right behind me were the first to jump into the cold water to assist.

I was with my 11-year-old son, who witnessed the entire ordeal. He even ran out to help as I called 911.

To witness so many wonderful caring people jump in to save this women touched our hearts so deeply. I am so very, very proud today to say I live in Abbotsford. So very proud.

And thank you, kind citizens of Abbotsford, for not only saving this women’s life but for showing my 11-year-old son that goodness does exist.

He was very shaken up; he had never witnessed a accident before.

He is still coming up to me saying, “Weren’t those people angels, mom!” Angels in the living did we see today! One ambulance, two firetrucks and numerous police officers arrived at the scene, but it was the people who jumped out of their vehicles that saved this woman’s life.

And to the lady that bolted from her truck who was directly behind me, you were just amazing.

Give seniors a break I am a senior and have been a patron of the Matsqui Community Centre for years, trying to keep fit and staying out of the health care system.

The cheapest way to do this is to buy a yearly pass. But at this stage in my life, it is hard because of the extra medication, hearing aids, dentures, etc. we seniors need.

Our city gives annual passes to seniors at 90 years. To me it is a big joke. How about lowering the age to a more reasonable age, say about 80-85, and give us seniors a break.

The facilities are there. It would not cost you more money. I believe it would save you money in that less people would need health care.

Thumbs up for Trevor Linden, who opened a gym for $14.99 a month, no contract and no start-up fee.

I would join in a minute, but at my advanced years, I enjoy the pool the most. It’s easier on the joints.

The B.C. Court of Appeal ruled on Friday that the group representing Abbotsford’s homeless community in a lawsuit against the City of Abbotsford will not have to pay at this time for police documents related to the case.

Pivot Legal Society asked to be exempt from paying roughly $29,000 for documents from police related to a constitutional challenge of Abbotsford’s bylaws against camping in parks that is slated for court on June 29.

The court ruled that the determination of who will pay the costs will be decided after the issue goes to trial. DJ Larkin, a lawyer with Pivot, wrote in a blog post that the decision, and another ruling made on Friday, represent significant victories for homeless people in Abbotsford and across Canada.

Three justices of the Court of Appeal also dismissed the city’s argument that the B.C. Supreme Court should not hear at trial how police and city staff enforced bylaws

against the city’s homeless population, Larkin said.

Pivot is looking for documents about how homeless people are treated in their interactions with police, such as end-of-shift logs for bike patrol officers, and files specific to eight individuals who have been homeless. Although the city is the party named in the suit, there are allegations about the police department, and Pivot argued the documents are necessary to their case.

“The court’s ruling reduces the barriers that marginalized groups may face when bringing an action against public institutions like the city and police,” writes Larkin.

A judge had previously ruled the Abbotsford Police Department was to be treated as a third party and was entitled to recover any costs stemming from the case.

Before the case went to the Court of Appeal, Const. Ian MacDonald told The News there were real costs to fulfilling the request, which included having three people collect the necessary documents, that would otherwise fall on taxpayers.

Three teams of Abbotsford students are among those from across the province earning spots in the provincial Math Challengers competition.

The Grade 8 and 9 students advanced to the provincials, taking place April 11 at Simon Fraser University, after qualifying at the recent Fraser Valley regional contest held at University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford.

A group of Grade 8 students from Clayburn middle school placed second at the regionals, while a Grade 8 team from St. John Brebeuf regional secondary placed third in their pool.

Another St. John Brebeuf team in Grade 9 placed second in their pool.

Math Challengers involves teams of up to five students who participate in four stages of competition.

The top contestants from each regional competition and the provincials are invited to a special event in April or May.

“These things are very old. They’ll get up to 100 years old or more. So they’re very important to British Columbians and we’re going to do as much as we can on the enforcement side.”

White sturgeon are the largest freshwater fish in North America, with the largest believed to reach sizes of 1,800 pounds and 20 feet in length.

The biggest one caught and released on record was a 12-foot 1,100-pound sturgeon reeled in by English tourist Michael Snell in 2002 near Chilliwack.

Hunter urged anglers who legally catch and release sturgeon to do so with the utmost caution when posing with them for photos.

“If you do it wrong you can actually kill that fish,” he said, adding the loss of any of the large old sturgeon that are reproducing could significantly harm the already low population in the future.

Poppy thief arrested again Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

A woman who was previously convicted of stealing poppy collection boxes in Abbotsford and Mission was arrested over the weekend and charged with breaching her probation.

Police reported last week that a warrant had been issued for the arrest of Lisa Marie Goddard, 31.

She allegedly breached her probation on March 5, although the exact nature of the breach was not released.

Abbotsford Police Const. Paul Walker said Goddard was arrested on Saturday evening after someone recognized her in public and called police.

She has been released from custody and is next scheduled to appear in Abbotsford provincial court on April 2.

Goddard served a sixmonth jail term, starting last May, for stealing a poppy collection box in Mission and two boxes in Abbotsford in November 2013. Her prison term was followed by one year of probation.

Former Abbotsford woman must repay defrauded Doris Nelson serving nine years in U.S. prison

The former Fraser Valley woman behind a massive scheme that bilked investors out of millions of dollars will owe $44.8 million to her victims when she is released from U.S. prison.

A U.S. federal judge issued the order against Doris Nelson last month, the Spokane SpokesmanReview reported.

Nelson is serving a nine-year prison sentence for more than 100 counts of mail and wire fraud. She pleaded guilty to the charges last year.

Nelson’s crimes all stemmed from her operation of the Little Loan Shoppe, a payday loan business that grew from its roots in Abbotsford to locations around the Lower Mainland, in Washington, and even-

tually online.

Nelson opened her first Little Loan Shoppe on South Fraser Way in Abbotsford in 1997 and by 1999 was collecting money from investors to open stores in Maple Ridge and Chilliwack. A Little Loan Shoppe was located on First Avenue in Mission starting in 1997, according to District of Mission business licence records, although that particular location isn’t mentioned in American court filings.

Nelson moved to the United States with her new husband in 2001.

The Little Loan Shoppes closed in the early 2000s, but by then Nelson had begun taking telephone loan applications from Canadians. In 2006, she expanded the business to the internet.

In 1999, though, the business had became what several judges

have termed a Ponzi scheme, as Nelson began using money from new and existing investors to pay other investors returns as high as 75 per cent, according to the U.S. Securities and E x ch a n g e Commission and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The scheme fell apart in 2008 and the next year the Little Loan Shoppe declared bankruptcy.

Nelson pleaded guilty last April. A judge later denied her request to retract her pleas. The S p o k e s m a n - R ev i ew reported that Nelson turned down a plea agreement that would have resulted in a 10-year jail sentence.

When she returned to prosecutors months later, the proposed deal was raised to 30 years.

“Skating The Days Away” is a calendarthemed show that will take spectators on a journey from January to December, celebrating sports, special monthly events and holidays.

With three of the key winter exhibitions coming to an end later in April, The Reach Gallery Museum Abbotsford has scheduled several public talks, tours and workshops.

The programs start on Saturday, April 4 at 1 p.m. with a free talk and tour of the exhibition “Decolonize Me” with curator Heather Igloliorte and artist Jordan Bennett.

“Decolonize Me” features six contemporary aboriginal artists whose works challenge, interrogate and reveal Canada’s long history of colonization.

On Saturday, April 11 at 1 p.m., The Reach features a free panel dialogue on “Decolonize Me: Empowering Indigenous Women through Visual Arts,” moderated by Dr. Wenona Victor, indigenous studies scholar at University of the Fraser Valley.

This year, the priority focus for civil forfeiture grants is on initiatives that address violence against women and support the Violence Free BC strategy.

Other areas where funding was made available include serving victims through restorative justice, community and youth crime prevention, and police education, training and specialized crime prevention equipment.

Since the civil forfeiture program became active, it has returned more than $16 million from successful forfeiture actions to crime prevention grants and victim compensation payments in B.C. Violence Free BC is the provincial government’s long-term strategy and commitment to end violence against women.

Errington’s coaching career started in 1974 when a broken ankle forced him from the pitch to patrolling the sidelines as a coach.

After a stint coaching the B.C. provincial program, Errington took over the Vancouver Whitecaps reserve team, helping develop players who contributed to the team’s 1979 North American Soccer League Soccer Bowl title.

Later he served as Bob Lenarduzzi’s assistant coach with a Vancouver 86ers side that won four straight Canadian Soccer League championships. He also coached with Canada Soccer, both with youth and senior men’s national teams, and was part of the coaching staff of the men’s side that qualified for the 1986 FIFA World Cup. Along with contributions at UFV, Errington also led the Abbotsford Magnuson Ford Soccer Club’s U18 boys team to back-to-back national championships in 2002 and 2003. “I’ve got mixed emotions about retirement, because I really enjoy the job,” said Errington, who has twice been inducted into the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame with the Whitecaps and 86ers.

“I enjoy the people at UFV, and the players. But I feel ready to retire. I want to spend more time with my wife, and do the things that I haven’t been able to do because football always got in the way.”

Abbotsford goalie Skapski sent back to minors Twenty-year-old netminder played in two games with the Rangers and went 2-0 The seven-week NHL ride is over for Abbotsford goalie Mackenzie Skapski.

Skapski, 20, was first called up by the Rangers for a game against the Boston Bruins on Feb. 4 after New York’s starting netminder Henrik Lundqvist suffered an injury after being hit in the neck by puck.

Lundqvist returned to the Rangers lineup on Saturday, which meant Skapski was reassigned to the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League (AHL).

In Memory of Henriette Draaijer Did I ever think there would come a day when my Mom wouldn’t be there?

It’s been a year since she passed and although I didn’t always agree with her nor she with me, she was my mom and my history.

She lived 93 years!

She left my father in Holland after his dalliances to join her eldest brother in Kingston, Ontario. My brother and I were 5 and 4 years old. No apartments were being rented to single women with children!

Dogs had more rights in the early 50’s! She put us in an orphanage for a year while she tried to find work and suitable living accommodation.

But life continued to be a challenge.

Here was a divorcee, a DP, displaced person as the immigrants were called, and a woman with 2 young children trying to survive in a male dominated workforce where women were expected to stay home. She quite often held down 3 jobs. Growing up rich and pampered in Europe with 7 brothers she was not allowed an education because women were expected to marry and procreate. Then the trauma of WW2 when she was 18. Homesteading would have been easier! She later got a 4 year Arts degree when she was 65 and the art she produced over her lifetime now hangs on many people’s walls.

Although my Mom lacked the gentle touches of new age parenting skills, she role modelled perseverance, honesty, frugality and hard work. She taught me to make the most out of every moment and my life has been enormously rewarding as a result!

where she took an active role supporting young US adults performing alternative service during the Vietnam War. In 1971 they moved to Winnipeg where grandparenting became part of her life and where she began her involvement with Mennonite Central Committee.

In 1981 they moved to Abbotsford, BC where she became co-manager of Ten Thousand Villages for British Columbia.

For Laura, these were treasured years filled with volunteer coordinating, traveling throughout BC, as well as journeying overseas meeting the creators of the crafts they distributed.

They were also special years being with her other grandchildren. Laura and Cornelius returned to their familiar roots in Manitoba in 2000, settling in Winnipeg. They moved into the Bethel Place community where they thoroughly enjoyed the rest of their days.

Laura and Cornelius were married over 67 years. Laura was predeceased by husband Cornelius Friesen in 2010, daughter-in-law Myrna in 2008, her parents and one brother, Walter.

She is survived by her children, 10 grandchildren and six great grandchildren, sister Erna, sister-in-law Anne Kroeker and uncle Harry Klippenstein, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service for Laura was held on Monday, March 30 at 11:00 am at Bethel Mennonite Church, 465 Stafford St., Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ten Thousand Villages 134 Plaza Drive; Winnipeg, MB R3T 5K9

GRABINSKY Peter It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Grabinsky on March 11, 2015 at VGH. He is survived by his wife of 38 years Marnie, daughter Jaimie, son-in-law Steve as well as his grandchildren Cooper, Charley, Taggert, Eily and Breslen.

Peter was predeceased by his son Benjamin, parents Frank and Lillian, brothers Ross, Steven and Jack and niece Laurie. He is also survived by his siblings; Gail (John) Meeker, Sharon (Reg) Esau, Susan (Roy) Edwards, David (Carol), Ralph (Colleen), Chris (Jeff) Gallinger, Donna (Barry) Sanford and Bryant, nieces, nephews and many good friends.

Peter was a wonderful grandfather and loved his grandchildren dearly. Peter had a great sense of humour, loved to cook and was truly one of a kind. He loved the outdoors and the beauty of nature. He will be deeply missed. There will be no service by his request. The family would like to say special thanks to Dr. Gwen Siemens and to VGH for their care and kindness.

MOLNAR Joseph Alexander Born October 19, 1937 in Hungary, passed away March 24, 2015 in Abbotsford. He is survived by his friends at St. James Catholic Church in Abbotsford, where Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, April 1 at 11:00 a.m.

Terrence Hewlett (Terry) passed away on March 20, 2015 at age 72, at the Cascade Hospice, after battling with cancer. He was born on February 24, 1943 in London England, and died in Chilliwack, BC. Terry is survived by his loving wife Linda, and adopted daughter Malinda Hewlett from Abbotsford.

His greatest passion lately was gardening as he owned a greenhouse a few years back.

Terry spent 40 years as a meat cutter in different places in the lower mainland. He also did some charity work in the prisons.

No service by request.

After a short and courageous battle with cancer, John Milito passed away peacefully with his family by his side in Ottawa Ontario at the age of 34.

John’s memory will live on through Barb Milito, Rheana Fast, Dominic Milito (Shannon O’Brien) Anthony Fast, Aliyah Fast and his “Westside crew”.

Special thanks to Justin, Pindy, Bobby, Steph and Elisa. Service will be held at Parkside Church on Saturday April 4th at 2:00 with an open invitation to celebrate at Rockwell’s afterwards.

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Susan Gloria van Tilborg, beloved wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by husband Rien, daughters Kathy (John), Kim, Tammy (Paul), grandchildren Kristina (Dan), Katie (Neal), Christopher (Brandi), Erika (Mike), Matthew, brothers Don (Kathy), Jack, William (Deanna), nieces and nephews. Susan was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Johanna Reid and sister Kathy.

Many thanks to the Abbotsford Regional Hospital Baker 2 & Taber Home nurses and care aides whose kind, gentle attention to Susan’s needs and comfort was much appreciated.

Service will be held at Bethel Reformed Church 3260 Gladwin Road, Abbotsford on April 6th at 11:00 am.

Laura Friesen (nee Klassen) passed away peacefully on March 26, 2015 at age 92, surrounded by her family.

The oldest of 3 children, Laura was born on August 11, 1922, to Marie (Klippenstein) and Peter P. Klassen in the village of Altona. The family moved to the Pembina Hills when Laura was six. They lived in a number of communities in this area for the following 10 years. Upon returning to Altona at the age of 16, Laura completed grade 12. Here she was baptized on confession of her faith at the Altona Bergthaler Church. It was here she met Cornelius Friesen. They were married on August 29, 1943 and lived in the communities of Gretna, Winkler, Reinland before settling in Altona.

During these years five children were born to them: Gloria (John Dyck), Gordon (Nita), Linda, Iris, Wilma (Don Johnson).

In Altona, Laura created a loving home for her family, supporting her husband in business, and was actively involved in her church community. Laura and Cornelius left Altona in 1968 and moved to Minneapolis,

Lillian passed away peacefully on March 16, 2015 at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. She was predeceased by her loving husband Jack. She leaves behind her son Stan (Vanessa) and daughters; Catherine (Mark), Jacqueline (Jim) and Lois (Scott), seven grandchildren; Alison, Stacy, Paula, Michael, Nicole, Tara, and Tyler, 7 great grandchildren; Branden, Chase, Colton, Ryland, Braxtin, Trentin and Kailynn, 3 sisters; Mable, Gladys, and Ila. She was born in Tichfield, Saskatchewan and raised her family in North Vancouver before moving to Abbotsford in 1990. There will be no service at her request.

TAYLOR Ron Ron Taylor passed away peacefully on March 18, 2015 after a short illness surrounded by family. He will be sadly missed by all family and friends. His funny sense of humor and ability to make people smile will always be remembered. He is survived by his three sons; Ted, Kerry and Ross. Anna Janzen was born in Adelsheim, Ukraine to David and Katharina Wiebe.

Her childhood was one of poverty, famine and fear. As a teenager, she heard about God and His plan of salvation and prayed to receive Jesus as her Savior.

Many years later, in Canada, she came to understand God’s love and forgiveness in her life!

In WWII, Anna fled with her family from Russia through Poland, and on to Germany. She married Cornelius Janzen in 1946. Two children, Walter and Adina, were born in Germany.

After much uncertainty, they immigrated to Canada, settling in Winfield, BC, in 1948. They

She missed her extended family who live in Ontario, and hence her passion for family togetherness with children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Anna had many health challenges, but faced them with courage. She passed away on Sunday, March 29, 2015, with her family surrounding her!

She leaves behind: Sister, Tina Willms, Brother Henry Wiebe & wife Annie, sisters, Maria Marthol (Hans), Frieda Fowler (all of Ontario), as well as many nieces and nephews of BC, Ontario, Germany.
