Selkirk College is recognizing retiring British Columbia Southern Interior MP Alex Atamanenko with a Honourary Diploma in Peace Studies for his contribution to furthering the cause locally and across Canada. The representative for the region in Ottawa since the 2006 federal election, Atamanenko has been a strong national voice for peace as a member of the New Democratic Party. “Alex is passionate about world peace,” says Selkirk College President Angus Graeme. “It has been

a significant part of his platform and message to constituents and the Canadian people during his nine years as MP.” In 2011, Atamanenko introduced a private members bill — the Conscientious Objection Act — which introduced the notion that Canadian citizens opposed to the use of military intervention in conflict zones could have their portion of taxation redirected to other humanitarian uses. Though not successful in passing, the introduction of the bill became part of the national conversation about Canada’s changing military role in the international community and theatres of conflict.

“It was a real surprise and a true honour,” Atamanenko says of the honourary diploma. “I am only getting this diploma because I have been working with people that have been involved and dedicated in furthering the cause of peace. People like the folks at the Mir Centre for Peace at Selkirk College, the people I have marched with in peace rallies over the years and the people all across the country who are making a difference. I am just one spoke in this wheel and it’s quite a humbling experience to be receiving a diploma.” continued on page 4

One of the five Selkirk College Contemporary Music & Technology Program student-based ensembles taking the stage at Spiritbar on April 17 will be Whatchu Want, bringing a funky edge to the evening of eclectic music.

Selkirk College music program students prepare for year end celebration show SUBMITTED West Kootenay Advertiser

Burgeoning Selkirk College talent will shine in an eclectic night of entertainment when students hit the stage at Nelson’s Spiritbar on April 17. The traditional Year End Celebration Show will feature student-based bands that have been toiling for several weeks in preparation for the night that will throw a spotlight on talent and hard work. With only a few weeks left in the Winter Semester, students are ready to go out in style with a night of diverse, rich and funky sounds no one will forget. “Creating a show like this gives our students real life experience about what actually goes into putting on a show of this calibre,” said Selkirk College instructor Laura Landsberg. “There is learning the music, but it goes well beyond that with the marketing and organizing of an event. I’m very excited and proud of what the students have created.” All five ensembles are joined by a Selkirk College in-

structor who has mentored and collaborated with the students over the last few months. The talent-rich instructors will be on stage with students for the vibrant night of music that explores a variety of genres. Nelson Standard Time will be opening the show with sophisticated classic jazz flair. Serving up a collection of standard tunes that have aged like fine wine will be Antoinette Libelt (vocals), Amulya (vocals), Davis Yates (guitar), James Villa (keys), Paul Landsberg (bass) and Luke Bodi (drums). Swanky Kitty follows and will heat things up with a fiery blend of snarky groove, making-you-sweat-just-beforecooling-it-off with fresh dance infused beats. Bringing the heat all over the dance floor will be Tenise Marie (vocals), Sallie Salcedo (vocals), Franco Niro (guitar), Alessandro Niro (guitar), Chad Braun (keys), Don Macdonald (bass) and Simon Stockner (drums). Super Chill is a sleek, soulful, vinyl-soaked kaleidoscope of tight, needle-drop grooves and ambient downtempo jazz. Taking the evening on a limousine ride through the many shades of cool will be Laela Heidt (vocals), Sophie (vocals), Jeremy Head (guitar), Ryan Jang (guitar), Paloma

Pendharkar (keys), John Tucker (keys), Nathan Swift (bass) and Aybars Savat (drums). Fourth up will be Whatchu Want which features smooth sounds from soulful voices and a sultry rhythm burning deep into the night. Bringing the funk to the dancefloor will be Ami Cheon (vocals), Abhi (vocals), Laura Landsberg (vocals), Ryan Mildenberger (guitar), Charlie Hoffman (guitar), Lucas Burrows (keys), Cody Munn (bass) and Graham Stark (drums). Closing the night will be War Sheep, a thunderous mix of indie rock and power vocals. Bringing the hard rock will be Nikki Wozney (vocals), Jonathan Kwak (vocals), Melody Diachun (vocals), Liam Mackenzie (guitar), James Holder (guitar), James Verishine (bass) and Mitchell Koch (drums). The Year End Celebration Show starts at 9 p.m. (doors open at 8:30 p.m.) at Spiritbar in Nelson’s Hume Hotel on Friday, April 17. The cover for the evening is $10 at the door and $5 for students. All proceeds from the evening will be going to the Nelson CARES Society Room to Live campaign which is creating affordable housing for people in Nelson’s downtown core.

Atamanenko spent a life teaching prior to entering politics. He moved to the West Kootenay in the early 1990s and began teaching at Stanley Humphries Secondary in Castlegar. In the mid-1990s he teamed up with former Selkirk College instructor Myler Wilkinson in resurrecting the Russian language program at Selkirk College which he helped teach on a part-time basis.

component of our area’s education. It’s also a significant provider of jobs and contributor to our economy.” Atamanenko’s entry into politics came in 2004 when he represented the NDP in a hard fought election against incumbent Conservative Party MP Jim Gouk. Atamanenko narrowly lost in 2004, but stayed with it and won the local seat by a landslide in 2006. He has remained a popular regional politician, winning both the 2008 and 2011 elections by a large margin. Over the years, Atamanenko has maintained his connection to Selkirk College and helped enhance postsecondary education in the region. “Alex has never refused invitations to come and present to students at Selkirk College on a variety of topics,” says Graeme. “He is a frequent contributor to college-wide student events and is always interested in engaging with students on the importance of young Canadians getting involved in the democratic process.” Now 70, Atamanenko has decided not to seek another term and will not be running in the October, 2015 federal election. The Selkirk College Graduation 2015 Ceremony will take place at the Castlegar Campus on April 24. Atamanenko will be joined on stage by fellow 2015 special award recipients John Armstrong (Distinguished Educator), Geoff Yule (Distinguished Alumni) and Margaret Scaia (Distinguished Alumni).

Ninety-second in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names. A recent installment in this series on Healy’s Landing, a remote settlement on the Duncan River, stated its namesake, Jack Healy, was still alive as of 1922, but the date of his death was unknown. While details of his passing remain a mystery, a recently-discovered photo in the Nelson Daily News of Jan. 29, 1938 reveals Healy was still kicking as of that date. The caption reads: “Healy’s Landing to most folks is ‘farthest north’ on the Upper Duncan, though Hall Creek is 12 miles further up. Left to right are shown Jack Healy, the famous pioneer; another pioneer, Jack McPhail, now passed on; Miss Maud Healy, niece of Jack Healy, who for 40 years has hunted and trapped fearlessly; and Kenneth Pond of Nelson, on a trip up to Hall Creek with his father to look at the Red Elephant group. Mr. Healy went home to Ireland a couple of years ago to live, but a year ago he came back to his ‘little gray home in the west.’” Hudu Valley There are a lot of Hoodoo place names in BC — creeks, glaciers, lakes, mountains, cliffs, and rivers — but there’s only one Hudu Creek and Hudu Valley, between Fruitvale and Ross Spur. According to Beaver Valley & Pend d’Oreille, “Sid Ross owned most of the land in the Hudu Valley [and] employed quite a few of the local residents and several Japanese as fallers. Over the years five Japanese fallers were killed due to the danger of falling dry snags; hence the name Hudu Valley: a bad place to be.” Two Japanese fallers died in logging acci-

According to the BC Geographical Names database, Hudu Creek first shows up on a 1915 map of the Kootenay, Osoyoos, and Similkameen mining divisions. In addition to the creek itself, which flows into Beaver Creek, the name is perpetuated in Hudu Creek Road. New Gallery 2 Director Submitted West Kootenay Advertiser

Gallery 2 has its first executive director. The gallery’s board of directors announced this week that Liz Barron from LaRiviere, Manitoba, has been hired following an extensive search. “Last fall, the board decided to create this position to assist with the growing success of the gallery, and we believe Liz’s extensive experience, skills and vibrant personality will ensure gallery 2 continues to serve our community. Please stop by and say hello to Liz,” said board chairperson Steve Hollett. Barron brings a myriad of experience to add to the arts and culture of the Boundary area, Hollett added. “She has much to offer the gallery and community.” Barron has been self-employed in the Indigenous arts and culture sector in Canada for more than 16 years. She was the project director for Close Encounters: The Next 500 Years, at Plug In ICA,

managing four international Indigenous curators and over 35 Indigenous artists, with five installation locations in Winnipeg, a major publication and an interactive website. Barron also was the project manager for Métis 10, the VANOC (Olympics) Aboriginal exhibition, which featured a permanent display of contemporary works from 10 Métis artists from across Canada. She is one of three original founders of Urban Shaman, a contemporary Aboriginal artist run centre located in Winnipeg, Manitoba. With these organizational skills and her abilities as a presenter, she has motivated and consulted with organizations of all types and sizes. Active in the arts and culture community, Barron is also on the National Aboriginal Advisory committee for the Cultural Human Resource Council’s “The Art of Managing Your Career.” Most recently she was on the board of trustees for Manitoba Opera, and is a former Board

What does fresh air, active seniors, and serenity versus suburban scramble all have in common? On the surface, not much. But visit a website called Environics Analytics, plug in a local postal code and one of those tags pops up to describe the populace from Grand Forks through to Greater Trail, and all the way to Nelson. The Toronto-based company compiles demographic data from two versions of the Canadian Census, and

provides marketplace analysis to numerous businesses and industries across the country. The latest “segment” is called the PRIZM5, which consists of 68 section snap shot of current demographics, lifestyles, consumer behaviour and settlement patterns across Canada. Daniel Heuman, the PRIZM5 developer, says readers should not be alarmed if their respective community’s description is not reflective of themselves. “The key is that we are not describing you,” he said. “We don’t have any personal information in the system at all.

The average annual income nears $77,000, and most own their homes through careers in mixed occupations with varying levels of education. Found in towns across Canada, aging and active consists of older families and empty nesters living in modest, single detached homes. Half the households are over 55, but still work in blue collar or agricultural jobs. Aging and active residents prefer the outdoors, regularly engaging in walking, fishing, hunting and cycling or riding ATVs and motorcycles on their local

open roads. When the mood strikes, a night of dancing is in order at the local watering hole, though community theatre and local concerts are largely supported. Next up is the “Suburban Scramble,” which describes the populace of both Rossland and Nelson, after plugging the city’s postal codes. While the average income, about $82,000 is higher than surrounding communities, the people are a mixed bag of young, lower and middle income suburbanites, according to the website. continued on page 15

Lifestyles

On the go green smoothie Book Review DIRECTIONS 1. Blend kale and almond milk until smooth. 2. Add remaining ingredients, and blend until smooth. Enjoy! *Use a frozen fruit to make smoothie cold. MAKE YOUR OWN ALMOND MILK SUPPLIES: 1 cup of raw almonds, organic if possible filtered water fresh squeezed lemon juice pinch sea salt 1-2 teaspoons maple syrup (optional) 1 vanilla bean or 1 teaspoon vanilla extract fine mesh strainer cheese cloth blender

Breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, snack, post workout fuel, late night munchies, etc— you name it! Our bodies crave (and need) vitamins and minerals all day long. Leafy greens and fresh fruit in a blended smoothie always makes for a great option. Healthy fats and proteins are the way to go if you want to power up with a meal replacement green smoothie. This combo of almond butter and rolled oats is a must to keep you feeling full and fuel you ’til your next meal. Serves 2 INGREDIENTS 2 cups fresh kale 2 cups almond milk, unsweetened 2 cups berries 1 banana 2 tablespoons almond butter + ¼ cup rolled oats

1. SOAK THE ALMONDS: Place one cup of almonds in a medium bowl. Squeeze fresh lemon juice over the top and fill it up with filtered water. Allow to soak for at least eight hours or overnight. The almonds will really absorb a lot of water, so be sure to use enough water! Add more if needed. The water will become a little cloudy and the almonds will swell and

absorb a lot of the water. 2, DRAIN: Drain off the soaking water and rinse the almonds well. Place in a blender along with three cups filtered water. Blend on high speed for several minutes until thick and smooth. There will be quite a bit of almond pulp mixed in with the milk. 3. STRAIN: Straining the almond milk isn’t necessary, but it does remove the pulp which can make the milk taste gritty. Use a sieve, which will leave some sediment, or several layers of cheesecloth. To remove the almond pulp from the milk, simply line a fine mesh sieve with several layers of cheesecloth and set it over a large bowl. Pour the almond milk into the lined strainer and let the milk drain through. Gather up the cheese cloth and twist it at the top so none of the pulp can escape, and gently squeeze to extract as much milk as possible. 4. STORE: After the straining is complete, add the sea salt, maple syrup (if using), and the vanilla.

By its Cober by Donna Leon

By Mark Conliffe, Rossland, B.C.

of a fifteenth-century book or the book as a completed whole with cover and illustrations in place? Why?). When Brunetti learns from the chief librarian at the Biblioteca Merula that books have been defaced and others have been stolen, suspicion turns to a scholar from the United States who, it’s quickly learned, had borrowed each of the affected books. Perhaps more importantly, this man is not who he says he is. But, others aren’t free from suspicion. What about the one-time priest who shared the reading room with the supposed scholar, or the somewhat nervous young men of the library staff, or is it possible that someone not connected to the library could gain access to its collection? The thefts and vandalism of seven hundred-year-old books are important enough offences in Venice, but they become much more serious when someone connected to the library and the books is murdered. As Brunetti pursues leads and hunches, he guides us through the streets and canals of Venice, across its plazas, and into its laneways and buildings. We stop with him before beautiful architecture and make our way alongside him through Venice’s villainous underbelly. We share firsthand his affection for his family, closest colleagues, and food, and we wrestle with him over some of the most demanding moral questions and longstanding traditions of Venetian life. It is Leon’s great achievements, on the one hand, that she keeps developing Brunetti and the characters who share this remarkable series with him and, on the other, that she balances this development while enabling us to start the series with any volume.

Atlantic Monthly Press, 237 pages

Even at book 23 in her Commissario Brunetti series, Donna Leon’s characters remain complex, her presentation of life in Venice continues to be alluring, and her plot is as gripping as ever. What sets By its Cover apart from the earlier novels in the series is its focus on books, or more accurately on what might lead someone to go to great efforts to steal or deface books. Brunetti is one of those detectives who need to understand why a person commits a crime. It is not simply that he wants to learn the motive for a crime, but rather that he respects the complex of forces that can cause an individual to perform certain acts, even criminal ones, and this effort to understand directs his inquiries, conversations, and internet sleuthing . In By its Cover this effort takes him to rare-book libraries, book donors, and booksellers, and it prompts him to wonder about answers to seemingly simple questions (Why steal a book?) and more complicated ones (What is more important, the text alone

Battle of Vimy Ridge remembered

98th anniversary of pivotal battle April 9, 1917 is the day that Canada became a nation, says Vern Schneider, a Legion member and veteran of Lord Strathcona’s Horse Armed Regiment. On that date, tens of thousands of Canadians emerged from the trenches and stormed the well-fortified German positions on Vimy Ridge near Arras in France. Previous French and British attempts to re-take the ridge resulted in failure and horrific loss. The Canadians were given the task in 1917, and fought for the first time as a unified Canadian force under a Canadian

general — and they succeeded. The Vimy Foundation is working to make the 100th anniversary an international commemoration with events across Canada and in the north of France. Schneider (right), Rob Reilly, vice president of Trail Legion Branch 11 and Neil Jarvie (left), a veteran of The Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada (primary reserve of the Canadian Armed Forces) gathered in the Trail Cenotaph while the Canadian flag hung at half mast to observe the important day in our country’s history.

Controlled burn in Trail An opportunity for training A house along Riverside Ave. in Trail was burned and demolished in a controlled fire Sunday. The activity allowed Regional Fire Services firefighters the opportunity to train and hone their skills. The demolition of the structure will clear space for the pedestrian/pipe bridge construction.

Youth votes count

(L-R): Connie Denesiuk, Martyne Sylvie Giroux, Julia Blackwell, and Suzanne Larocque. Photo Submitted

Suzanne Larocque at the Castlegar Campus of Selkirk College is still hard at work. Her efforts to initiate young voters is working and in acquiring 94 registrations for the upcoming federal election, Suzanne is going for more. She was set up at the pit at the college on five different occasions in March. The third-year nursing student at Selkirk College estimates more will register and she is committed to increasing that number, even after her semester practice placement comes to an end. Suzanne is interested in the dynamics of politics in her future

career in nursing as well as educating youth on the importance of voicing their democratic right to register and vote. She had the pleasure to meet and chat with Connie Denesiuk, Liberal Candidate for the South OkanaganWest Kootenay area and Martyne Sylvie Giroux, Liberal/Team Trudeau Volunteer Coordinator on March 25 at her registration booth. Connie Denesiuk also had the opportunity to meet Mayor Lawrence Chernoff at the Selkirk College Saints hockey celebration rally on the same day.

Website describes local communities by postal code continued from page 7

Housing tenures are about equal between renting or owning, and while the primary occupation is the service sector, level of education vary. Another aspect to the scramble, is there’s more singles and young families. Date night could mean tickets to a jazz or country music concert, or cheering for the local hockey team. However, the Suburban Scramble also includes a rate of divorce and lone parenting that is higher than average, which keeps the bars and nightclubs hopping at very high rates, says the site, adding, “provided, of course, they can get a sitter for the kids.” Members of this section clip weekly coupons from community and daily papers, shop in discount grocery stores and eat a lot of fast food. Hobbies range from woodworking, crafts and stamp collecting to sports like fishing and bowling. Trail is in a league of its own, locally anyway. The city is considered a “Serenity Springs,” for mostly retirees who seek the lifestyle of a small and sleepy town. Annual household incomes average about $75,000 with neither owning nor renting tipping the scales any one direction. Half the population is over 55, and one third is 65 and older. Unlike upscale tidy retirement communities, the rustic towns

children are not

in Serenity Springs are filled with lower middle income seniors who are aging in place and watching their wallets. In these traditional homes, the men fish

and go boating, women stay home to cook and garden, but both enjoy a craft or home show. Entertainment usually means travel to another community

for events like dinner theatre, figure skating or shopping. But overall, the people are less interested in travelling any farther, as reflected in low rates for visiting

other countries, according to the study. For this sector, a trip to the provincial park to be on the water or bird watch is the preferable vacation.

A night at the winery

| 1.855.539.1826

Honey, I’m home. That was my text message, not to my wife, but to Naramata winery owner Sal D’Angelo recently. For years we have stayed at the bed and breakfast at D’Angelo and I had arrived the evening before, intending to stay one night before heading on to Kelowna the following day. When I got to the winery, there was Sal, sitting at a table in the tasting room, book in hand and glass of wine on the table before him. “You don’t answer your phone or texts?” he said after we shook hands. I had spent the previous several hours at a nearby winery, tasting my way through the entire wine lineup, and it hadn’t occurred to me that Sal would be planning to make me dinner. I hadn’t given an exact time when I would be arriving. He had already finished his dinner and I took comfort that my stomach would get tended to at a pub soon enough—I had another appointment booked already. He poured me a wine and we began to catch up. This was my first visit back to the Okanagan since October and the time seemed all the longer because I had twice cancelled planned visits. Weather

scrubbed one mission and work got in the way of the other. Sal D’Angelo first came for a visit to the Okanagan back in 1987 and it made an impression. Years later he sold some real estate and used the cash to purchase property in Naramata—he had fallen in love with the area when he vis-

Food HANDLE WITH CARE

La Dolce Vita Dinner, wine and a good story continued from page 16

As I sat across from it at the bistro table I realized how much I enjoy our chats. I quickly made a decision to stay another night, calculating that my schedule was flexible to accommodate a change. After all, there are few things I enjoy more than a good story, and I was in the company of a master. He said my room was available, poured me a glass of 2007 Sette Coppa (“Double O7, as my friend Bob calls it,” Sal said.) and he launched into a story. A short while later I extricated myself to get to my next appointment, where a pizza and more good conversation would sustain me. The next day I finished appointments up and returned to me room. At four I sent the text—Honey, I’m home. Luckily, he has a sense of humour, and respond-

ed that he was in the winery, topping up barrels. I took that as an invitation and soon we were immersed in conversation, tasting barrel samples while he poured wine into oak kegs to replace the Angel’s Share, the amount claimed by evaporation through the wood. The kegs need to be kept full or oxygen will take over the available space and prematurely age the wine. Sal makes fewer wines than most operations his size. And he makes them well. I’m a Bordeaux blend fan so I am particularly enamoured of the Sette Coppa (Italian for “seven measures”.) It consists of Merlot, Cab Sauv and Cab Franc, along with smaller amounts of Petite Verdot and Malbec. The Double 07, as his buddy Bob calls it, is a reserve, and is unfiltered. I love it, and so does Sal. As many times as I have been the small tasting room, I had never noticed the art

work on the walls. Or maybe the pieces have been hung recently. It doesn’t matter. As Sal launched into a story, he pointed out a framed caricature of himself, being crowned as the Wine King. His friend, the artist Elio Del Col, who had conspired to have the cartoon printed in on the front page of the local paper when Sal was honoured. As he told the story about Del Col, Sal pointed out two linocut prints—beautiful and complex, and clearly made by someone who is very, very good. Then he pointed to a water colour that looked strangely familiar. It had been reproduced as a label for some of D’Angelo’s Ontario wines. Sal had asked Del Col to create a design for a label, and he did. Sal was happy, but the artist insisted on making others, too, so that his friend would be entirely happy with the result. Sal stuck with the first. When

he went to pay the agreed $500 fee for the work, Del Col waved him off. “We’ll square up later,” he said. That became a catch phrase with the pair. Sal would do Elio and good turn and refuse immediate compensation, saying, “We’ll square up later.” Eventually, Sal moved to BC and established his Naramata winery. He bought Del Col a plane ticket and flew him out to visit, then provided him with a room in the bed and breakfast and a car to drive. He waved off the artist’s attempt to pay. “We’ll square up later.” That story, and others to follow, took place over a delicious, simple dinner of fish, potatoes and salad, one I watched Sal prepare as we chatted. I would have paid good money for that meal in a restaurant. Sal made dinner, provided the wine and told me stories. My contribution to the evening was to listen. I guess we’ll square up later.

NEW BC PET REGISTRY Many pets without any form of permanent identification such as a microchip implant are never reunited with their human families, but the BC SPCA hopes to change that with an innovative new provincial pet identification registry to link missing companion animals with their anxious guardians. “We’ve created a first for British Columbia – a centralized database for pets who receive permanent identification at any BC SPCA shelter, veterinarian or microchip clinic across the province,” says Craig Daniell, chief executive officer of the BC SPCA. “No one

plans to lose a pet, but it happens every day in B.C. – doors and windows are left open, or fence gates aren’t properly unlatched – there are so many ways pets can accidentally go missing, even if they’re indoor pets.” The new registry will make it easier for SPCA shelters, animal control officers and veterinarians track down pets who become lost and also, showcase the importance of ensuring your pets have permanent ID, Daniell notes. “We hope the registry will encourage pet guardians to provide permanent ID for their cats and dogs. It’s easy to do,” he says.
