Overfishing of sockeye seriously affecting their future say critics

Students from the two North Thompson secondary schools have gotten together to form a senior boys rugby team – and they gave the NorKam Saints a 51-3 shellacking during their first game of the season. The game was played at Barriere Secondary (BSS) on April 9. Picture is North Thompson Spartans (red jerseys) and the NorKam Saints in a maul. Find article on page 12.

This young man and goat kid spent a few minutes studying each other at last Sundays Poultry and Small Farm Animal Sale/Swap held at Barriere Country Feeds. This was the first event of this kind at the business, who opened up especially to accommodate the sellers and buyers, and of course to give those purchasing small animals a chance to buy food and bedding. Kristina Leduc of Little Fort organized it all and says it was such a good success there will be another in a few weeks.

At Monday night’s District of Barriere council meeting, council approved the erection of signage on Barriere Town Road that will inform people about the improvements happening with respect to the wastewater project, including the proposed date of completion. The district’s engineer, Dave Underwood from TRUE Consulting, prepared a report for council which reassured them that the contract with LNB for the collection system provided sufficient protection for the district and that after recent discussions with the contractor he felt confident they would complete the job to design specifications, and anticipate the roads will be paved mid-May. Underwood explained that video inspections undertaken in late December 2014 indicated several deficiencies with respect to the gravity sewer aspect of this project, mostly related to grade and that the most likely explanation is inadequate compaction of the pipe bedding material. ...continued on page 8
