This young man and goat kid spent a few minutes studying each other at last Sundays Poultry and Small Farm Animal Sale/Swap held at Barriere Country Feeds. This was the first event of this kind at the business, who opened up especially to accommodate the sellers and buyers, and of course to give those purchasing small animals a chance to buy food and bedding. Kristina Leduc of Little Fort organized it all and says it was such a good success there will be another in a few weeks.

At Monday night’s District of Barriere council meeting, council approved the erection of signage on Barriere Town Road that will inform people about the improvements happening with respect to the wastewater project, including the proposed date of completion.

The district’s engineer, Dave Underwood from TRUE Consulting, prepared a report for council which reassured them that the contract with LNB for the collection system provided sufficient protection for the district and that after recent discussions with the contractor he felt confident they would complete the job to design specifications, and anticipate the roads will be paved mid-May. Underwood explained that video inspections undertaken in late December 2014 indicated several deficiencies with respect to the gravity sewer aspect of this project, mostly related to grade and that the most likely explanation is inadequate compaction of the pipe bedding material. ...continued on page 8

Safety in Numbers There have been many recent news stories about the re-emergence of childhood diseases that have not been an issue for years. When I was a kid, every student in school was vaccinated against diseases like Rubella, mumps and measles. My parents never lost sleep worrying whether my brother or I would suffer the devastating and crippling consequences of polio. Not too long ago, smallpox wiped out entire communities. The development of vaccines made those diseases a distant memory.

Now these diseases exist only in the most underdeveloped and marginalized parts of the world where children do not receive vaccines. In North America, the practice of administering vaccinations to children is becoming a hotly debated topic.

So how does this apply to our pets? Many pet owners are becoming concerned about the effects of vaccinations for their animals and some are choosing not to vaccinate their animals. The history of pets is not unlike that of humans. Your grandparents or great-grandparents likely had siblings or friends who became crippled from polio or who died from another childhood ailment. Similarly, these same people almost certainly had a dog that died of distemper, as tens of thousands of puppies did before they reached their first birthday. Those dogs that managed to survive often had severe and lasting problems, including seizures. Pets died from rabies and, in the 1970’s and 1980’s, countless dogs died from parvovirus—before a vaccine was developed to prevent this disease.

When we don’t have direct experience with something, we often dramatically underestimate the risk. Such is the case with vaccines. Anyone whose pet has experienced a vaccine reaction (usually a swollen face, itching, vomiting or lethargy) recalls the experience. But hardly anyone to-

What many people don’t realize is that vaccines protect not only the animal (or person) vaccinated, but they also protect unvaccinated individuals. This is called “herd immunity”. When the vast majority of a population (either four legged or two-legged) is protected against a disease, it lowers the risk for infection for everyone in that group. Because fewer individuals are susceptible to the disease, even those that are not vaccinated are less likely to encounter the disease, and therefore less likely to become ill.

So what happens when fewer individuals are vaccinated? These diseases are always waiting in the wings to infect unprotected populations. This effectively turns back the clock and history repeats itself.

I did volunteer vet work in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina, an area where many dogs are not vaccinated and are not on heartworm prevention. So what did I see?

A dozen or more cases of canine distemper. In almost 20 years of veterinary practice, I have only seen one other case. Almost all the dogs were also infected with heartworms, which is a potentially fatal parasite. Unvaccinated dogs can also be exposed to distemper from infected wildlife, such as fox and raccoons. Rabid dogs from northern Canada have also been transported to metropolitan areas with dire consequences.

For pets that do have a history of vaccine reactions, or those with immune system issues, there are reasonable alternatives, such as antibody titre tests, which use a blood sample to measure animal’s level of immunity to a specific disease. For the rest of us, vaccine protection is the best insurance policy.

Federal Industry Minister James Moore and a senior Canadian Coast Guard official have defended the response to a fuel spill from a freighter in Vancouver Harbour.

Roger Girouard, assistant commissioner for the western region of the Canadian Coast Guard, said Friday afternoon that containing and cleaning up 80 per cent of the spilled bunker fuel within 36 hours “represents an amazing success in oil pollution cleanup.”

Moore shot back at Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson and Premier Christy Clark, who held their own news conferences earlier Friday. Both called the six-hour delay before containment booms were placed around a grain freighter an unacceptable delay.

“The cleanup is still ongoing and the facts are still coming in,” Moore said. “I think it’s highly inappropriate for any politician to start pointing fingers and trying to score political points and making jabs at other levels of government without knowing all the facts.”

Federal Liberal leader Justin Trudeau issued a statement Friday morning, blaming Conservative government cuts for delays and vowing to reopen the Kitsilano station if he wins an election scheduled for this fall.

Transport Canada is investigating to see whether a malfunction of ship equipment caused the bunker oil to be released in the harbour.

Easier registration for collector vehicles Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure KAMLOOPS – If you love beautiful collector or vintage vehicles, and you want to restore one from out of province for on-road operation, you are in luck.

Government, ICBC and the Specialty Vehicle Association of B.C. (which serves car clubs and enthusiasts) have been working together to improve the process for registering an unfinished collector vehicle imported from outside the province.

“This improved registration process is great news for collector and vintage-car enthusiasts who are looking to restore an older vehicle that they have purchased outside of B.C.,”

said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone.

Starting April 9, 2015, the new registration process will come into effect.

This will allow vehicle owners to register their collector or vintage vehicles purchased from out of province before completing the restorations to their vehicle. Prior to these changes, vehicle owners ran the risk of not being able to register a vehicle they had invested time, money and effort into restoring.

Vehicle owners will have peace of mind that they have met all of the paperwork requirements to register vehicles in their names.

Also, when the owner completes restoration of the ve-

hicle and it passes a safety inspection, it will be simpler to license the vehicle for on-road use because it will already be registered.

To be eligible for registration before completing the restorations to a vehicle, the vehicle must be at least 25 years old (based on its model year) and be substantially intact, with over half the vehicle in an assembled state.

To be licensed to operate on B.C. roads, the vehicle must pass a provincial inspection and the owner must also provide the final details of the restored/completed vehicle to ICBC. Approximately 25,000 collector vehicles and 9,000 antique vehicles are registered in B.C.

Overfishing of sockeye seriously affecting their future say critics

By Jeff Nagel Black Press Conservationists say federal fishery managers allowed serious overfishing of Fraser River sockeye salmon last summer and too few fish spawned as a result.

And they say a continued policy of allowing overly aggressive commercial fishing threatens to wallop vulnerable salmon runs again this summer.

Last year saw a large run of 20 million sockeye but Watershed Watch Salmon Society executive director Aaron Hill said the number that actually spawned ended up 1.4 million below the target of 7.3 million set by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

The spawning shortfall would have been nearly three million or 41 per cent below the target had fishermen taken all the sockeye they’d been allocated.

“Big catches were obviously the big priority for our federal government, not prudent management,” Hill said.

The endangered Cultus Lake sockeye and Interior coho runs were among the stocks that fell dangerously short of their spawning targets last year, he said, raising doubts about the strength of future generations.

Salmon from weak runs return intermingled with the strong stocks and can get hammered as an unintended bycatch unless fishing is carefully restrained to ensure conservation.

Last year DFO riled First Nations and conservationists when it quadrupled the maximum catch by Canadian fishermen of the coho run – from four per cent in previous years to 16 per cent – effectively sacrificing more threatened coho so abundant sockeye could be caught.

This year’s fishing plan would maintain the same higher limits set last year.

Hill said that’s a bad idea, since this year’s sockeye run is projected to be lower at around seven million and environmental conditions appear troubling.

“They can’t even get it right in years of good abundance,” Hill said. “This year we’re looking at a massive unprecedented warming event in the north Pacific, record low snowpacks and concerns about marine productivity in general. It’s too risky.”

A large pink salmon run is also expected this year and there’s growing evidence that competititon from pinks for food at sea is hurting sockeye survival.

Hill accused fishery managers of putting industry first, in contravention of government policy that conservation of wild salmon is the top priority ahead of all user groups.

Stu Cartwright, DFO’s acting area director for the B.C. Interior, defended DFO’s plans, adding they are carefully designed to manage stocks in a way that supports conservation and sustainability while maximizing fishing opportunities for First Nations, commercial and recreational fisheries.

Bob McKamey, vice-president of the Area E Gillnetters Association, dismissed the objections from Watershed Watch.

“It wouldn’t matter what the fishing plan is, they have a kneejerk reaction to the commercial fishing industry in general,” he said.

McKamey said last year’s fishery was well managed and there was “ample evidence” to support the reduced protection for weak stocks.

In previous years, he said, too many sockeye were allowed to spawn, creating excessive competition among juveniles.

“There was no end of evidence to indicate that exploitation rates were too low and that overspawning was the problem in a lot of areas.”

Folly from the war on pot

Donald Charles Isadore was given a six-month sentence for killing a woman as he drove downtown. An unnamed man was given a six-month sentence in a Kamloops court room for sexual interference of his step-daughter.

This week, Donald Clarkson — a 76-year-old grandfather from Little Fort — was handed a six-month sentence for doing something an increasing number of experts say is not the demonic activity depicted back in the 1936 movie Reefer Madness. The pensioner was growing 150 small marijuana plants on his North Thompson property, a crime for which he walked into court and pleaded guilty, sparing taxpayers a costly trial. He grew pot for one simple reason — to supplement the pension he now receives.

Justice Dev Dley, in sentencing Clarkson, called his action “a crime of greed.”

It’s ironic Dley was making this kind of observation just days after provincial-court judges in the province won a battle with the government about their pay and pensions, one that will see judges getting a significantly larger pension than the kind a retired trucker like Clarkson receives.

Thanks to the we’re-really-tough-on-crime Stephen Harper government, Dley imposed the mandatory sentence on the septuagenarian.

In addition to the six months of residence in Kamloops Regional Correction Centre — Clarkson was slapped with a decade-long firearms-possession ban — until he is 86 years old — and must submit a sample of his DNA to a national registry. So, Clarkson will now be living among, as fellow reporter Cam Fortems put it, “a lot of nasty people there [KRCC] on remand.”

I don’t understand marijuana use. I’ve never tried it, have no desire to do so and assign that attitude to the Baptist side of my brain. Decades ago, firmly rooted by my parents’ belief children should go to church every week and some weekdays, too, the Baptist side of my brain also dictated dancing and drinking the demon rum were sins.

Most of those synapses have been obliterated, but the marijuana one hasn’t — although I have spent a lot of time since moving to B.C. 16 years ago reading what experts are saying about medical benefits of cannabis.

I’ve talked with people who use it to address chronic pain, anxiety disorders and the fear of the final days of palliative care.

I’ve listened to other experts talk about why it should be legalized. Perhaps that’s the lesson from Clarkson’s new reality.

If the country’s largest mental-health and addiction-treatment centre’s advice was followed, pot would be legalized, rules would be applied, production and sale would be taxed and this grandfather’s actions would become a commercial crime, something more likely to result in a fine rather than half a year in jail with thugs for neighbours.

It’s working in Washington state. It’s working in Colorado.

The New York Times’ editorial board recently came out in favour of legalization. Even a survey in Harper’s right-wing foundation of Alberta shows a majority favouring decriminalization.

National polls show two-thirds of Canadians want marijuana legalized or decriminalized.

Clearly, the federal government is behind its people on this issue, with almost 60,000 cannabis charges laid in 2013, the most recent year with available statistics. It seems like a waste of police resources and court time and a failure to identify a new taxation-revenue system.

To be fair, Clarkson was growing more than a few ounces’ worth of the plant, but that reality would lead straight back to the federal pension levels — and that’s another column.

Private clinics would make public wait times longer

Yevonnes Flowers and Gifts was broken into sometime during the early morning hours of Apr. 8. The break in was discovered when staff opened the store that morning. Proprietor Yevonne Purcha reported that the culprits had made quite a mess, presumably looking for cash, but they were unsuccessful in finding any. RCMP attended, and spent considerable time taking fingerprints at the scene.

Ensure seniors have access to services To the editor; At a recent forum put on by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) and the B.C. Health Coalition at the Hilton Hotel in Metrotown, titled “System Change for Seniors Care,” both the ombudsperson, Kim Carter, and seniors’ advocate, Isobel Mackenzie, were the keynote speakers.

The atmosphere in the conference centre was electric, with over 450 people in attendance to hear from the two experts.

Without going into detail, the B.C. Ombudsperson report, with its 176 detailed recommendations, few of which have been acted upon, provides a road map to address the seniors’ problems in our home and community care for seniors.

The Ministry of Health, as the steward of our provincial health-care system, has the responsibility to ensure seniors have fair and equal access to services, including accurate

information, in order to make informed choices.

Our seniors’ advocate, Isobel Mackenzie, was appointed under pressure from both the seniors’ organizations and ombudsperson Kim Carter’s 2012 critical report on the state of seniors’ care in the province.

She referred to the many meetings she has attended with seniors around the province, discussing a wide scope of issues such as health care, transportation, housing, and income support, to name a few, and her commitment to ensuring B.C. seniors have the best possible care and support.

This has to be of some comfort to all seniors in this province needing help. I know it was to me, just knowing that we have a dedicated advocate who thanked the grassroots efforts of people around the province for all they have done to raise the issues and concerns on behalf of the over 700,000 seniors in our province.

She seemed to be empowered and enthusiastic, saying

it is not a job but a calling in which she has over two decades working with and for seniors.

It will be up to all of us to see that the wind is at Isobel Mackenzie’s back to ensure that when her final report and/ or recommendations come down, they are acted upon by our representatives in Victoria and, for that matter, Ottawa.

Enough is enough. It is time that seniors in this province have the best possible care and support.

How do we express our concerns in a climate in which a recent federal survey of 15,000 seniors found that 34 per cent of seniors 65 and over are at risk of being undernourished, or that an analysis by the Conference Board of Canada states that the poverty rate for seniors in the last 15 years has increased from 2.9 per cent to 6.7 per cent, or a 131 per cent increase? And that figure is climbing.

B.C. seniors deserve quality care xTo the editor; I’m not looking forward to the end of the month. As part of a global antipoverty fundraiser, I’ve vowed to take part in a program called Live Below the Line. The unfortunate reality is that 1.5 billion people live on $1.75 a day or less. As a plump and well-fed Westerner, I’ve been challenged to do the same and see how it feels. I have to live for five days on less than a cup of coffee a day. Pretty much rice and beans.

I’ve done it before, and it’s very hard. No more food or drink for pleasure, for comfort. Eating just to stay alive. Profoundly bland, low in nutri-

tion. No variety. Think how often you enjoy the taste of your food, look forward to your meal.

Now imagine an amorphous lump of cooked grains two or three times a day.

Nothing green, no meat, no fruit. Day after day. This is the reality for far too many, and it’ll be mine for five days.

Find someone doing Live Below the Line and be generous, because while they endure this for five days, for 1.5 billion it’s never-ending; a preventable reality.

To the editor; Media stories over the past week about people waiting too long for hip replacement surgeries remind us that we need to shorten wait times for some procedures.

The good news is, we know how. Across B.C, and Canada, dozens of innovative projects have resulted in dramatic improvements to wait times.

For example, the Alberta Bone and Joint Institute reduced wait times for hip and knee surgery from 11 months to nine weeks.

B.C. needs to act on innovations proven to reduce wait times and improve health outcomes, and apply their successes and efficiencies across the health care system.

The result will ensure everyone can get timely, quality care when they need it.

The same can’t be said about one B.C. for-profit clinic owner’s plan to make it

possible for doctors to charge patients whatever they want for necessary care – and to choose to refuse patients who can’t afford to pay.

Dr. Brian Day’s constitutional challenge to health care law, which goes to trial this year, would result in more doctors being siphoned out of the public system and into for-profit clinics – making wait times

longer for almost everyone.

Innovation in the public system will improve timely care for Canadians. Day’s proposal would only beef up profits for private insurance companies and forprofit facility owners like himself, all at the expense of the health –and wallets – of Canadians.

B.C. veterans begin cross-Canada ride

By Tom Fletcher Black Press Quesnel rancher Paul Nichols kicked off a cross-Canada horseback ride Monday to introduce a new generation of veterans to the public and seek their support.

Nichols, who served with Canadian troops during ethnic warfare in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s, struggled to control his emo-

tions at a ceremony at the B.C. legislature.

“Our Canadian troops do a hard job for us, and when they choose to transition back into civilian life, some of them struggle and lose their way,” Nichols said. “And I can tell you from personal experience that a heartfelt thank-you and timely support from the community during that time of transition can be life-

changing. So my job through this foundation is to put as many Canadian veterans in the saddle as I can.”

Accompanied by other B.C. veterans and his wife Terry, a therapeutic riding instructor, Nichols plans to connect with 700 veterans in an eight-month journey ending in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Small town editor to cycle from Toronto to Ottawa for global warming petition Black Press “My special interest in climate change began several years ago when the child of a family member cried himself to sleep after watching a television documentary on the subject. Will you sign my petition to help fight climate change in Canada?”

That’s how an online petition starts out that has been posted on Care2 by Keith McNeill, the editor of the award-winning ClearwaterNorth Thompson Times in Clearwater, British Columbia. The petition calls for a Canada-wide referendum on carbon fee-and-dividend.

This spring McNeill plans to bicycle from Toronto to Ottawa to publicize his petition.

The ride will start in Toronto on May 23 to coincide with Canadian Community Newspaper Association’s annual convention. By Keith McNeill The Times Dr. John Soles is no longer the only medical doctor practicing permanently in Clearwater. In fact, he now has four other physicians to help him out.

In this regard, there was some discussion regarding whether the hiring of a full time project manager, at an added cost, would have had an influence on the status of construction.

In TRUE’s opinion, this additional person would not have resulted in any significant difference in terms of quality of construction as completed by LNB and would have a substantial additional cost.

The report stated that TRUE and the district cannot dictate how a project should be completed to the contractor; saying they cannot tell them how to do their job.

It is the contractor’s responsibility to complete the project in accordance with design and specification.

As part of this contract the district has retained a 10 per

cent holdback on all work.

District CAO Colleen Hannigan says they are “very much protected” in terms of the payment that has been made to date with respect to pipe installation.

She notes that testing of the gravity sewer involves multiple steps: 1) The pipe is flushed and video inspected.

2) A low-pressure air-test is performed to ensure competency.

3) Review of video inspection records to ensure compliance with contract specifications in terms of grade and integrity.

“The district’s acceptance of the installed infrastructure is not provided until test results confirm conformance with design and specification to tolerances outlined in the contract documents,” said the CAO. She tells that in addition to the payment total made to date for installed sanitary sewer mains, the District of Barriere is further protected with the following bonding:

1) Performance Bond in the amount of 50 per cent of the Total Contract Sum; and, 2) Labour and Materials Payment Bond in the amount of 50 percent of the Total Contract Sum. A Performance Bond is issued by a Surety to guarantee satisfactory completion of a project by a contractor. A Labour and Materials Payment Bond is also issued by a Surety and guaranteed that the contractor will pay the labour and materials costs they are obliged to.

LNB is presently completing correction of the known pipe deficiencies and have informed TRUE that it will see this project to completion.

At this time TRUE says they see no reason why LNB will not fulfill its contractual obligations for this project.

“Aeration is one of the primary components of all wastewater treatment and Barriere is being used as an opportunity for this company to develop and test a new product, at no cost to the district,” says Hannigan, “ Septage from private septic systems will not be able to be received by the SRS until the Wastewater plant itself is up and running.”

The main mechanical/office/custodial building of the Solar Aquatics Wastewater plant, as well as the chip storage is 90 per cent complete.

Expectations are the greenhouse fabricator will be out this coming week with all the wall trusses and purlins to install. Then they will drill all the holes and install the column bolts. Then they’ll book the crane and deliver the columns and roof in about 10 days or around April 26, including the catwalks for the electrical cable trays.

Hannigan says the objective is to have wastewater being accepted by the plant in early summer.

A further update on this project will be provided at the next District of Barriere council meeting on April 27.

Barriere soccer starts on April 25

North Thompson Star/Journal The spring session of youth soccer in Barriere will be starting on April 25.

Barriere Youth Soccer Association rep Chris Matthews says to date there are 117 players registered ranging in age from age four to 13.

“We are doing an eight week spring season with plans to have our U7 to U13 teams play four games against Clearwater,” says Matthews, “We are kicking off the season with a BC Soccer sponsored Grassroots Festival for our U7 to U13 players.”

The festival format is comprised of four main stations: movement, dribbling, passing/receiving the ball, and shooting/goal keeping.

“We’re really looking forward to it,” said Matthews, noting the team has also purchased soccer jerseys that we will be handing out to players to use for the season.

Clearwater/Barriere rugby team starts season with a win

They should have known better than to let Clearwater and Barriere join forces.

Students from the two North Thompson secondary schools have gotten together to form a senior boys rugby team – and they gave the NorKam Saints a 51-3 shellacking during their first game of the season. The game was played at Barriere Secondary (BSS) on April 9.

“Things are looking a little different for the Clearwater kids for rugby this year,” said Gabe Francis, a teacher at Clearwater Secondary School. “We were going to be light on numbers at the senior level so we put in a request with BC School Sports to run a joint program with Barriere Secondary.”

Francis plus BSS principal Ken Rife are co-coaching the boys.

The Clearwater/Barriere team calls itself the North Thompson Spartans.

“Our veteran players set a strong example for the boys who were playing their first game and all the boys played brave rugby,” Francis said of the game against NorKam. Spartan tries (touchdowns) were scored by Jordan Lefeuvre, Matthew Lee, Karter Romeo, Brandon Proppe, and Keaton Noble.

The North Thompson team played on Tuesday of this week against the South Kamloops Titans (in Kamloops).

Friday they will travel to Williams Lake, and then next Friday Williams Lake will travel to play in Clearwater.

Clearwater Secondary also has a junior rugby team that will see its first game in a couple of weeks.

The junior team includes a couple of Barriere players and will only be playing an exhibition schedule this season.

The joys of exploring old pioneer homesteads Eleanor Deckert There’s a “Sweet Spot” every spring, after the snow is gone but before the leaves open.

No summer hordes of mosquitoes. No autumn hunters. No pre-winter snow at higher elevations. The green veil of every bush is not yet hiding contours of the land or other clues from the curious explorer.

Now is a great time to pack-up a picnic.

Bring your camera, binoculars and outdoors pack (fire starter, rain gear, first aid and other emergency preparedness items) and head out to explore an old homestead.

Safety first! Beware of dips in the landscape which might be the lid of a collapsed well, root cellar or out-house hole. Rusty cans and broken glass might be in a garbage dump near by. Fallen fences of hazardous barbed wire can be hidden in the overgrown grass. Floors and beams are rotten.

Nails and spikes are everywhere. Resist the temptation to step inside. Stay outside of old buildings and look in with observant eyes.

Whenever I approach an old homestead, I experience a heightening of my senses. Eyes and ears are wide open seeking impressions.

who lived here, I can see all around me what they did and why they did it.

When I come to a cabin, I look at the structure, methods and materials used for construction, home made details, store bought hardware, glass, interior finishing materials or furnishings.

I notice the view from the door and windows and also the relationship of the door and windows to the sun’s light. No matter how broken, collapsed or decayed, there are parts of this former home which are still the same now as they were when people lived here: the lay of the land, the location of water, the east-west, north-south

orientation of the slopes and buildings.

Where young saplings grow now, open spaces were then. Was it a garden? Road?

Work space? Where did they get water?

How far is it to the railroad? Are there fences which might have enclosed animals?

Are there signs of an out-house, well, root cellar, grave, barn, other buildings? Are there clues indicating what they were used for?

I like to slow down and notice little things that are specifically designed or invented for this place, this house, this family. A hook to hold the heavy root cellar door open.

scenic valley. The shelf near the stove so the cook will have utensils handy. Pathways lead to essentials such as the now-fallen out house, daily barn chores, all-important water source, nearby wood shed.

Once I came to a grassy slope where a dairy barn still had the names of each cow over each stall: Daisy, Belle, Clover. A swiftly flowing frigid creek ran through a spring house so the milk cans would quickly chill.

The barn was located near enough to the house for the people to hear any disturbance.

The grassy pasture hill was also visible from the house. No invading predator would be unseen.

Where the valley floor meets the mountain slope one cabin’s windows were protected by saw blades along the bottom of each window sill. It is easy to guess that frequent visits from bears, hungry each spring and strong enough to

force entry, motivated this ingenious use of a tool usually used for another purpose.

Layers of newspapers lined the walls as insulation and were stuffed in between the logs as chinking. What year are the newspapers?

What city did they come from? What was news at that time?

One of my favourite discoveries was when I stood in the doorway of an abandoned cabin, wondering what it was like to be the woman who had lived here. She would have had so many necessary chores to do daily, seasonally, annually.

Just like her, I can enjoy the slant of the sun and hear the river rushing down below. I felt how valuable every bucket of water would be that she had carried up the steep sloping path. But then I saw how the deliberate planting of lilac bushes on either side of the path brought pleasure to this lady who had the bare essentials and the luxury of beauty

so closely linked.

In another location several buildings with many artifacts left behind made for an adventure of observation and an attempt to understand the family who lived there.

One shed had skinning boards, hooks and nails for hanging things along the highest logs. Surely is was a work place for

a trapper to prepare the many skins collected through the winter months. The hay barn also had discarded boots, boxes of belongings, papers and tools. Looking through the papers I could see the prices of purchases, colour photos in magazines and headlines in newspapers. In the house, besides interesting dishes, cans and boxes from food items, I was especially interested in a child’s school scribbler. Drawings and printing, math problems and spelling lists were not so different from any child of the same age no matter what decade.

Mindful of both private property and any explorers who follow, I deliberately leave things as they are. An old saying is a good guide. “Take only pictures. Leave only foot prints.”

The Roddys had a place on Avola Mountain Road.

Today it is largely collapsed.

Infrared photography Making Pictures with

John E n ma n Sometimes it is necessary for me to get away from doing the usual things. My time as a photographer is spent being precise. I meter for the light and shadow, striving for the best possible exposure, and not much is left to chance.

On the Easter weekend I spent a day photographing a family Christening.

My job was to take a creative approach to photographing that religious occasion and telling the family’s story. At an event such as a Christening nothing waits for the photographer and there is no time to correct omissions or mistakes.

The main rule for me was to keep out of everyone’s way, not to become a focal point of attention, and never to miss any thing that happens.

The next morning as I sat at my computer working on the post-production photo editing of the Christening my wife mentioned she would like to finish off the roll of film she had been saving for a sunny day.

It didn’t take much convincing to ignore the day’s “to do” list and as I looked out at the clear blue sky I realized I needed something to take off the stress I had been feeling.

There is nothing quite like infrared photography. It is always an exploration when I use the wellworn Nikon D100 that I had modified many years ago to

only “see” infrared light.

Vegetation appears white or near white.

Black surfaces can appear gray or almost white depending on the angle of reflected light, and if photographed from the right direction the sky becomes black. The bluer the sky, the more the chance there is for an unworldly, surreal effect. And white surfaces can glow with a brightness that illuminates the sky.

I have written about infrared before, but for those that are new to this subject here is the gist of it.

Digital camera sensors are as sensitive to infrared light as to visible light.

In order to stop infrared light from contaminating images manufacturers place what they call “a hot filter” in front of the sensor to block the infrared part of the spectrum and still allow the visible light to pass through.

My infrared modified D100 has had that filter removed and replaced with a custom filter that allows for infrared only.

My wife wanted to visit a marshy area not far from our home that on wet years fills up with water, and is annually visited by birds, ducks, and geese. But this year’s early dry spring has not given the marsh much water, and when I walked up to the dam two ducks quacked loudly and flew away, and that was the only wildlife sighting for the day.

Metering for the light and shadow, should produce the best possible exposure, with not much left to chance.

The back roads always have something to photograph, so we moved on and chose our subjects depending on the light. Linda was shooting with her old medium format 1950’s Ikoflex and was looking for interesting features like fallen trees and rock formations.

That particular old film camera doesn’t have an automatic mode, or an in camera meter and requires a hand held light meter. I am sure the few passers by wondered at a woman standing roadside with a boxy thing hanging from her neck while she peered at something in her outstretched hand.

I just explored, and unlike Linda’s limited, 12 exposure roll of film, I had an almost endless supply of digital choice, and besides, infrared changes the way we see things. So I pointed my camera at anything that caught my eye.

I began this discussion with the words, “I spend my time being precise.” And “Not much is left to chance.”

However, not so much with infrared. I only use the meter as a not-so-precise guide, and don’t worry about much else.

I do try for interesting angles of the subjects I photograph, but sometimes I am in for a surprise when I bring the images up on my monitor.

Shooting infrared is always an exploration, a discovery and moves a photographer far from the usual.

On Sunday March 29, the beef members of the Yellowhead 4-H Club held their first beef weigh-in at the North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo grounds.

This was our first weigh-in of the year, the photography club also took the time to get pictures of the weigh-day, and also went over judging photography.

As it was the first weigh-in, some of the steers were not used to the amount of people and we had difficulty getting them onto the weigh scale.

Hopefully by the next weigh-in all the steers will be more comfortable leading.

The Yellowhead 4-H club is still selling flower baskets for our annual fundraiser. If you wish to purchase any, please contact a local Yellowhead 4-H member. Pickup will be on May 5, at the fall fair grounds.

By Dee Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Pie

Ingredients ½ cup chocolate syrup 1/3 cup semi sweet chocolate chips 1 quart chocolate chip ice cream, softened (4 cups) butter or margarine 2 cups crisp rice cereal ½ cup sour cream Instructions: Coat bottom and sides of an 8” pie plate with butter or margarine. Combine chocolate syrup and chocolate chips in a small bowl.

Microwave on high until hot, about 45 seconds. Stir until smooth. Reserve ¼ of the chocolate mixture. Combine remaining chocolate mixture and cereal in a bowl & mix to coat. Press mixture over bottom and up sides of prepared pie plate. Freeze until firm,

about 15 mins. Combine reserved chocolate mixture and the sour cream in a small bowl & mix well. Spread half of the ice cream in the pie plate.

Drizzle w/half the sour cream mixture.

Top with remaining ice cream and drizzle with remaining sour cream mixture. Freeze pie, covered, at least an hour before serving.

Easy Mushroom Chicken

Ingredients 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts 1 tbsp hot oil ½ cup water 1 tin cream of mushroom soup Instructions: Brown chicken in hot oil in a large pan. Mix soup with water.

Pour over chicken. Simmer, covered, until chicken is cooked through.

Try these flavour changes:

Rosemary Chicken Stir in 1 cup thinly sliced carrots, ½ tsp dried rosemary with soup and water.

RCMP investigate what appears to be attempted horse thefts in Cherry Creek area Kamloops This Week They cut fences and opened gates and allowed horses to escape.

But, the animals were rounded up by their owners before the culprits could complete their rustling attempt and load the animals into a stock trailer.

Kamloops Mounties are now looking for those behind suspected horse thefts in Cherry Creek this month.

Staff Sgt. Doug Aird of the Kamloops Rural RCMP said the latest incident took place on Saturday at about 9 p.m. on Cactus Road, where a homeowner noticed someone had cut the wire fence, allowing eight horses to escape.

The horses were then rounded up.

That incident was

preceded by a similar occurrence on April 9 when, at 10:14 p.m., a homeowner on the same road saw that someone had removed chains from the gate, allowing horses to run free.

All the animals were caught and returned.

Aird said a Subaru was seen in the area and left when the property owner tried to get a licence-plate number. In addition, a truck with a stock trailer was seen driving slowly on the roads at the same time.

Aird said neither of the vehicles were known to the property owner.

OBITUARIES In Loving Memory

Catherine Jeanne Hurdle (nee Humphreys) “Kitty”

June 23, 1953 – April 2, 2015

The family of Kitty sadly announces that she passed away on April 2, 2015. Survived by her sisters Bernice (Harry), Nadine, Linda, and Darleen (Grant), brothers Grant, Darrell (Brenda) and Wayne (Fran).

Predeceased by Jim (2004) and Fanny(2010) Bradford, her parents.

To all of her nieces and nephews, Dana (Scott), Kyle (Kasia), Brett (Sherry), Hayley (Kyren), Trenton (Michelle),Kendall, Samantha (Jason), Christina (Bryson), Mark (Keisha) Jennifer, Melissa, Amanda and Bryan, Auntie Kitty was a great listener and eager to hear about and be a part of their lives. She firmly endorsed ‘hugs are free’.

Kitty was raised and educated in Barriere. She attended college in Prince George, graduating as a Licensed Practical

Nurse. Kitty specialized in Geriatrics and nursed in Fort St. John, Slave Lake, Edmonton, Drayton Valley and Smithers.

After returning to Barriere she worked for Interior Health as a Community Health worker for 27 years. She enjoyed providing care for the home-bound and endeavored to bring happiness

and joy to their lives.

Being in the outdoors was rejuvenating for Kitty and she knew the names of all the local birds. An avid reader, jigsaw and crossword player she was very comfortable in her own space. Kitty valued family and friends as ‘priceless’. Shelley, Gail, Cec, Margie are among the many she called friends.

Kitty’s golden retriever, Annie, was a constant companion and now brings comfort and joy to her family.

William (Bill) Nelson

December 16, 1931 – April 9, 2015

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of William (Bill) Nelson of Barriere, B.C. He will be missed by his wife of 62 years, Norma, his children Carole, Dianne (Wayne), Shirley (Jim), Ian (Jo), Gary (Cheryl), his 10 grandchildren Sharon, Sandy, Kristen, Spencer, Tara, Braden, Brittany, Tanya, Scott, Kaylee, his four great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Born to Mabel and William James Nelson of Barriere, B.C., Bill had a long history in the North Thompson Valley. His grandparents moved to Barriere in 1911 to establish a sawmill and build Barriere’s first hotel.

At six years of age Bill moved with his family to Kamloops where he went to school and spent many enjoyable years horseback riding with his friends from the ranching community.

He told stories of pasturing his horses where Walmart is now, and rode range from Lac Le Jeune to Cherry Creek and beyond.

Although he loved the

cowboy life, his primary occupation was woodworking.

He spent 25 years as a journeyman carpenter, and in the latter part of his carpentry career he became part owner of Wilson and Dalgleish Construction.

Whether he was building a china cabinet or a barbed wire fence he took great pride in his work and always strived for perfection. Anybody who ever built a fence with Bill would agree with this. He worked hard with precision and accuracy and taught his children and grandchildren to do the same.

In 1953 Bill married his devoted wife, Norma, and

they started their family.

He never lost his desire to return to the country life, and in 1963 he bought his first ranch on Dunn Lake Road in Barriere. For the next 10 years Bill juggled city and country life until finally, in 1974, he bought a larger property, moved his family to the North Thompson Valley, and pursued his lifelong dream of being a full time rancher.

Bill was fortunate to have good health up to the moment of his passing.

His last weeks were spent feeding cattle, building fences, driving his four-wheeler, and working in his woodwork shop with his grandson Scott; exactly what he loved doing.

A tea will be held May 16, 2015, 1-4 p.m. at the Darfield Hall. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Bill’s name to the charity of your choice.

Walking your goats Gloria McWatters and her daughter Sharon were spotted walking their goats at the recent Country Feeds poultry and small animal swap and shop on April 12. This is the year of the goat and goats are also the theme for this year’s North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo event.

Abuser tricks #2 The third column in a series, courtesy of the Anti Violence Advocates Society

The following is a continuation list of behaviors that may indicate a potential batterer. It is not the purpose of the listing to imply that every person with some of these attributes is a batterer or potential batterer.

Hypersensitivity An abusive person is easily insulted, perceiving the slightest setbacks as personal attacks.

Cruelty to animals or children This is a person who punishes animals brutally or is insensitive to their pain. The abuser may expect children to perform beyond their capability (for example whipping a two-year-old for wetting a diaper or teasing children or siblings until they cry).

“Playful” use of force in sex This behavior includes restraining partners against their will during sex, acting out fantasies in which the partner is helpless, initiating sex when the partner is asleep, or demanding sex when the partner is ill or tired. The abuser may show little concern for his partner’s wishes and will use sulking and anger to manipulate compliance.

Verbal abuse This behavior in-

Anti Violence Advocates Society volves saying things that are intended to be cruel and hurtful, cursing or degrading the victim, or putting down the victim’s accomplishments.

Rigid sex roles The victim, almost always a woman, will be expected to serve.

For instance, a male abuser will see women as inferior to men, responsible for menial tasks, stupid, and unable to be a whole person without a relationship.

Dual personality “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” Explosive behavior and moodiness, which can shift quickly to congeniality, are typical of people who beat their partners.

Past battering An abuser will beat any partner if the individual is involved with the abuser long enough for the cycle of abuse to begin.

Circumstances do not

make a person an abusive personality.

Threats of violence This consists of any threat of physical force meant to control the partner. Most people do not threaten their mates but an abuser will excuse this behavior by claiming “everyone talks like that.”

Breaking or striking objects This behavior is used as punishment (breaking sentimental possessions) or to terrorize the victim into submission.

Any force during an argument This may involve an abuser holding down his the victim, physically restraining the victim from leaving, or pushing or shoving. Holding someone back in order to make demands, such as “You will listen to me!” is also a show of force.

If you have been living in an abusive relationship, you mayfeel confused and afraid and not know where to turn or what to do.

You may have mixed feelings of love and anger; wanting the abuse to end, but not wanting the relationship to be over. If you are in immediate danger call 911. For help contact Interior Health Crisis Line 1-888-353-2273.
