A Mission mother wants to know why more isn’t being done to protect the public after a traumatic experience involving her daughter and a stolen van.

The woman – who wants to remain anonymous for fear of retribution – was recently driv-

ing her mini-van in downtown Mission.

When she stopped at a local First Avenue store, she left her keys and her 22-year-old daughter in the vehicle.

According to the woman, she was in the store for about two minutes when her daughter charged in saying someone stole the van.

A man had jumped in the van, and she told

him he was in the wrong vehicle and he had to get out.

“He looked at her in the passenger seat, looked her right in the eye, reached over and locked the door,” said the mother.

The suspect then put the vehicle in reverse and sped away with the daughter inside.

Half of firefighter responses in 2014 involved medical issues

Medical and health issues continue to account for almost half of fire service calls, according to the Abbotsford Fire Rescue Services’ (AFRS) annual report.

The report was presented to council on Monday and showed that about 48 per cent of all responses are attendance at medical-related incidents. A similar figure was recorded in 2013.

About eight per cent of the department’s response is to fires.

In 2014, breathing problems, unconscious/ fainting patients, chest pain and motor vehicle accidents were all in the top 10 incidents to which AFRS responded.

Fire crews responded to 6,227 total incidents in 2014. Of the 509 that were related to fires, 60 involved houses, seven were apartments or townhouses, five were industrial, nine commercial, 12 barns, and 93 vehicles. There were 90 illegal fires.

A total of 319 fires resulted in dollar loss and, of those, 65 were deemed to be suspicious; 51 came from ig-

The fire department continues to focus on education and prevention of fires, hosting

public events through the year.

The report states Abbotsford residents pay about $100 per capita for fire rescue expenses. Mission and Chilliwack are both less, at around $75, and Surrey is slightly higher.

Langley Township and Richmond both exceed $100 per capita and Burnaby and Coquitlam hit over $150.

While much of fire response is to medical issues, it continues to be less than in some neighbouring communities.

The provincial agency BC Ambulance Service (BCAS) responds to all medical calls, but how fire departments support BCAS is determined by municipalities.

In Abbotsford, firefighters respond to immediate life-threatening injury or illness incidents, while in some other communities in the Lower Mainland, fire departments respond to all incidents to which ambulances respond.

Mayor Henry Braun said that while fire services will always respond to medical issues as needed, the trend is an increase in response.

This issue is compounded by the fact that the city doesn’t have enough ambulances. “My understanding is that all of our surrounding neighbouring jurisdictions have a higher level of ambulance service than we do.�

He said the city will be asking for a meeting with the province to discuss the issue of ambulance service, adding that he has heard people are sometimes waiting 30 or 40 minutes for an ambulance.

Signs might only be permitted on designated city properties in upcoming elections for all levels of government.

Council directed staff to prepare an election sign bylaw for consideration that would set out on which city-owned properties signs could be placed.

Election signs are currently regulated under a general city sign bylaw, which allows for “virtually unrestricted use of municipal property for the placement of election signage,� according to a city report.

Over the past few elections – municipal, provincial and federal – the city has

received feedback about the unsightliness of signs, concerns about public safety and sight lines, and access to walkways and sidewalks, states the report.

Mayor Henry Braun said that completely banning election signs can create issues around inhibiting freedom of speech, but said that limiting sign location will address certain issues, referencing a serious incident during the municipal election campaign period last year when a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle in the area of Old Yale and Maclure roads.

At that time, police requested the city contact candidates to remove large election signs from the area, as they might have been a factor in the incident.

The daughter broke a bone in her foot when she jumped from the van.

“She’s pretty traumatized by the whole thing.”

According to Mission RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Shaun Wright, the incident occurred on March 15 at about 3:30 p.m. It began after the male suspect entered a liquor store in downtown Mission and stole a bottle of vodka. After leaving the store, the suspect entered the van and drove away.

Wright said the suspect subsequently fled from the vehicle in the area of Horne Street and First Avenue but was located a few blocks away.

Police arrested 46-year-old Sean Pappas of Mission and charged him with one count of unlawful confinement, one count of theft over $5,000, one count of theft under $5,000 and one count of failing to comply with recognizance.

Pappas was subsequently released on bail.

The driver said she’s not happy that the man has been released. She’s concerned because Pappas “knows what my van looks like, he knows what my daughter looks like,” but she has no idea what he looks like because she was in the store the entire time of the incident.

The driver requested a picture of Pappas, but said the RCMP could not provide one because of privacy issues.

According to the provincial court database, in January of this year Pappas was charged with several offences in Mission, including using an imitation firearm, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, assault with a weapon, assault and uttering threats. He was released on $250 bail at that time, and the charges are proceeding through the courts.

Pappas was convicted in 2007 of manslaughter in the 2004 death of a 21-year-old man in Peace River, Alta.

Pappas punched the man once in the head, causing an artery in his head to tear and killing him. He was sentenced to a jail term of 27 months.

In 2012, he was charged in Grand Prairie, Alta., with two counts of possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, and one count each of possession of the proceeds of crime, possession of ammunition while prohibited and possession of cannabis resin.

Media reports at the time quoted police as saying that Pappas was believed to be a member of the Demon Soldiers, a “puppet club” for a larger outlaw motorcycle gang.

The outcome of those charges is not available.

Telling it like it is

There are no doubt many taxpayers who hoped the abrupt axing of the Abbotsford Heat hockey contract last year would also bring an end to the financial bleeding of the sports centre.

Those people will be disappointed with the latest report on the Abbotsford Centre, which pegs the 2014 loss at $1.7 million.

The red ink, however, has become considerably shallower than the $2.3 million shortfall in 2013 – reflecting a restructuring of the contract with management company Global Spectrum.

It cost the city $5.5 million to extricate itself from the ill-fated hockey venture, but considering the Heat also drew $1-million-plus in annual civic subsidies, the long-term picture is an improvement over slogging through another five years of combined team and facility losses.

After all the public lambasting for getting into the grossly expensive deal in the first place, city hall deserves ac-

knowledgement for recent and ongoing efforts to lighten the load on taxpayers.

In addition to rewriting the Global operating agreement, seven local positions were eliminated and new marching orders issued for entertainment and activity initiatives.

While a more conservative approach may be resulting in greater challenges bringing big name acts into town, the shows that are booked are far more likely to be revenue-positive.

Ultimately, the centre needs another anchor tenant – hockey team or otherwise.

Regardless, Mayor Henry Braun vows that whoever moves into the facility will not represent a new drain on public dollars. When that deal is eventually struck, he estimates the annual arena loss could be shaved to about $1 million.

And that, he says, is likely to be as good as it gets.

Other Hand There is an old adage down on the farm that says “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” But despite my best efforts to stick by that rule, my many cases of spectacular failure prove its truth.

For years we have as a hobby been growing dahlias, their magnificent blooms impressive for most of the summer and fall. And after the first frost, one of my tasks is to dig out all the tuber clumps, then wrap them carefully in newspaper for winter storage.

Over time we experimented with various storage mediums, the most memorable was sawdust obtained from McClary Stockyards. While the shavings were clean they had, while resting in their pile at the yards, acquired a noticeable tang of cow manure, revealed only when the tuber nesting warmed in the confines of

the house.

Shortly thereafter I was tasked with repacking the dormant dahlias with something less aromatic.

The tubers are overwintered in a former wine cellar. It maintains an even coolness required for the clumps’ survival, and is vacant because we long ago discovered that wine doesn’t last long enough in this house to require long-term storage.

When we first converted the room and loaded in our first winter of resting plants, I also stored some other stuff in the available space. That included a couple of large desiccant containers and a sack of the material formerly used to keep moisture at bay in a boat and camper.

It was revealed in the spring that desiccant not only keeps vehicles free of moisture, but sucks it out of dahlia tubers too!

Most of the crop was completely dried out and rendered useless.

So it was, this past week, déjà vu.

After years of successful wintering, last fall when talking to a dahlia expert, I asked how he stored his tubers. “It’s a good idea to have a little fan in the room.

It didn’t take long to discover that more than 75 per cent of the 150 or so dahlia clumps were either lost or severely compromised.

Fortunately, due to the plant’s prolific root production – they grow something like potatoes – we will still have a planation, though perhaps not quite as exotic

as previous years.

As for next winter’s storage, I’ll stick with what has proved tried and true, and quit trying to fix what wasn’t broken in the first place.

On the other hand, it was with a hint of nostalgia that I learned of Providence Health Care and the provincial government deciding to replace rather than “fix” St. Paul’s Hospital.

Having lived in various apartments in Vancouver’s West End in the 1960s, St. Paul’s has always conjured fond memories. Not of the thousands born there, nor the thousands more who were healed or ended there lives there, but for the vibrancy of its former role as a nursing school.

Many times when having a party, I or one of my friends would call one of the pay phones on the various floors of the nursing residence, and invite whoever answered, along with her friends, to come on over.

I’m still surprised how often that worked! And a little saddened that in today’s world the trust of those times are long gone. markrushton@abbynews.com

Transit woes Responding to the recent reports on the workings of BC Transit, I desire to add my comments based on my past 10 years of exclusive usage of this important transportation mode.

To expect the ridership to increase in the present format is a dream not to reach fruition in the near future, due to the callousness of the service offered.

The present BC Transit ridership is based mostly on persons not owning a car or people having some physical disabilities.

Some of the ills of this service could be listed as: In pouring rain, snow or sunshine, one has to keep standing while waiting for the bus to arrive (as most bus stops have no covered roof), which sometimes lasts more than half an hour, due to some buses missing a trip or some of these passing by more than five minutes earlier than the normal arrival time.

Worst of all, you have no way to know if the bus is due any time or has already left.

There are many buses plying the most busy routes like Bourquin to downtown and back, and Bourquin to South Fraser Way and Clearbrook. On the Downtown route, Bus 2, 3 and 31 travel within a time span of five minutes or less of each other.

Similar is the time gap for Bus 1 and 2 on South Fraser Way corridor.

Sometimes a ludicrous situation is observed when these buses follow one behind the other.

The bus schedules on these routes could conveniently be planned to run at an interval of 15 to 20 minutes duration, to enable more available options for the bus travellers.

Bus 3 on the George Ferguson way and 1 and 2 on South Fraser Way run parallel to each other, and a traveller from one route to other has no link-up. This results in lot of wasted time on each corridor for getting connected to the other side.

It would be very convenient and time-saving if these two routes could be linked in some way, like running these buses in a loop, so that no changeover is required.

I hope the above listed suggestions are taken in a constructive mode and BC Transit sees an improvement in its delivery, and public convenience and comfort.

Girls Fly Too! sets precedent Over 9,800 participants attended aviation event For the third time in four years The Sky’s No Limit – Girls Fly Too! annual aviation and aerospace event set a new precedent for the largest outreach of its kind.

On March 7 to 8 over 9,800 females and their families from around B.C. and beyond gathered at the Abbotsford International Airport, according to a news release.

Among the attractions was the opportunity to experience flying. Females of all ages who hadn’t flown in a small aircraft before were invited to register in advance for a free helicopter ride.

Participants were also able to climb through the various civilian and noncivilian aircraft and ask questions of the flight and maintenance crews. Joining many other commercial and gen-

Go Fishing Forever event People with disabilities are encouraged to get out and fish with Fishing Forever, a B.C. Wildlife Federation program.

This year’s event takes place June 7-8 at the Freshwater Fisheries Society of B.C. in Abbotsford from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Director Craig Cleveland’s eldest son, James, has been arranging orchestrations and vocals from age 12. Now in Grade 12, James, kept hearing a “before you leave” wish, since James is enrolling in a college down in Tennessee in August. It had to do with an old hymn: Lift Him Up. Cleveland saw a powerful theme running in the music and told his son “That song is a story song. Everyone loves a good story and a good story song is better. It’s a story with a picture! It’s a clear picture of salvation!”

The market takes place during the City of Abbotsford’s Canada Day Celebration on July 1 at Abbotsford Exhibition Park (32470 Haida Dr.).

The Coast Capital Savings TeenFest event came to Abbotsford for the first time over the weekend.

The event was held Saturday at Abbotsford Centre, welcoming teens from ages 12 to 18 and their families.

The event included a teen talent contest; performances by teen musicians, singers and bands; sports and gaming activities; dance performers; and special guests.

There were also 80 booths and five different areas to explore.

DIABETES COACH STUDY Looking for Participants The University of Victoria and Fraser Health are conducting a study to evaluate the effectiveness of peer coaches for persons with type 2 diabetes. This research study is funded by the Lawson Foundation of Canada. Interested persons must be adults with type 2 diabetes living in the Fraser Health Region and able to speak English or Punjabi.

The objective of the study is to determine whether peer diabetes coaches can assist persons with type 2 diabetes to better manage their condition.

Interested persons will be randomly assigned to a group that receives a coach for six months or to a group that receives usual care.

Panther mantra: ‘Support, communicate, and believe’ From A22

They have bought into our philosophy, [which is] three words: support, communicate and believe.”

And that has translated into a lot of championship bling.

“I’m so proud of them,” he said.

Cannon – a longtime rugby player who coaches the team along with Matt Myers, Stephanie Doan and former Abby player Lauren Arthur – can often be heard reiterating that three-word mantra. Cannon noted that behind every successful senior programs there’s usually a strong feeder system.

And that’s been the case with Abbotsford Middle preparing young players to excel at the next level.

“Five of the [senior] girls on this team started as Grade 9s,” Cannon said. “They are leaders.”

Despite the fact that there are 12 graduating seniors on the team, there’s lots of talent in the pipeline for the Panthers.

“Lots of good young players who will come up and step in,” said Cannon.

One of those graduating players is star Nakisa Levale.

“She’s in a class by herself,” said Cannon.

Fortunately, she has a younger sister on the team, Tausani.

“Sani is going to be just as good.”

Nakisa, the captain of the Panthers, is excited about the team’s lofty ranking in the province.

She joined the Panthers program in Grade 10 after arriv-

ing from a different school.

“It means a lot because we have been working hard since I was in Grade 10. It’s cool to see the development.”

She is one of three

The Panthers inaugural season came in 1994, when the team finished second in the province.

Chicago calls up Cumiskey for playoffs Abbotsford native appeared in seven games during season As they prepare to play their first playoff game Wednesday, the Chicago Blackhawks h ave re c a l l e d Abbotsford native Kyle Cumiskey.

Cumiskey, a 28-yearold defenceman, signed a contract with Chicago last summer after spending two seasons playing in

Sweden.

He played seven games during the regular season for the Blackhawks in February after injuries hit Chicago’s blueline. In 54 games for the American Hockey League’s Rockford IceHogs, Cumiskey scored two goals and registered 20 points.

Whether Cumiskey gets into a game soon will depend in part on the health of 40-yearold veteran defenceman Kimmo Timonen, who has missed most of the year with injuries.

The Blackhawks open the playoffs Wednesday against the Nashville Predators.

Happy Vaisakhi Day!

Vaisakhi: a time of celebration Also known as harvest festival April is an important month for the South Asian community in general and Sikhs in particular with the Vaisakhi harvest celebration.

The festival marks the start of the new year in the Nanakshahi solar calendar and recognizes the Sikh religious faith.

For the Sikhs, Vaisakhi marks the birth of the Khalsa (the Pure One).

Throughout the month of April, Vaisakhi and the birth of the Khalsa is celebrated around the globe.

This is an occasion of dancing, singing, music, the wearing of festive garments and religious praise.

Men dance the Bhangra and women dance the

Gidda to celebrate this event.

During the Vaisakhi celebation, processions called nagar kirtan make their way along the streets as they sing hymns from a sacred book of worship know as Guru Granth Sabib.

Vaisakhi took place this year on April 14.

Many Sikhs choose to be baptized during this holiday.

Vaisakhi also commemorates 1699, the year Sikhism was born as a collective faith when the 10th guru, Guru Gobind Singh, founded the Khalsa in front of thousands at Anandpur Sahib in the state of Punjab, India.

The Sikh Vaisakhi event is celebrated with dance, singing, music and the wearing of festive garments.

Toddy is survived by her husband Bryan, her son Danny (Brooklyn) her grandchildren Isaak, Kolby, Kash, sister Cindy (Ernie), niece Marla Marika, her beloved Omi and Opa, daughter-in-law Kelsi (Zach) and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Toddy loved her fur kids, dogs, cats, horses, she played slopitch and owned first base.

She loved her garden and backyard. She’s the glue that kept things going in our family and will be greatly missed.

She will be always loved and never forgotten.

Lena Scheer went to be with Jesus, her Lord and Saviour, on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2015. She is lovingly remembered by her husband Albert (married 64 years), her sons Dennis (Glenda), Ken (Julie), Ray (Anne), her seven grandchildren, her 12 great grandchildren, and her four sisters Marion, Elsie, Betty and Vera.

She is predeceased by her daughter Sharon, her sisters Margaret and Irma, and her brother George. Mom spent her last eleven months living at the Menno Hospital where she was regularly visited by many family members and friends. We as a family are so very grateful and thankful to all the wonderful staff who helped care for and love our mother.

A very special Thank You to mom’s roommate Anita and her husband Rudy Kasdorf who became like family to us.

To say that something spectacular has happened in the Canadian custom car world would be a large understatement. When Don and Elma Voth’s pseudo ‘65 Chev Impala won the highly prestigious Ridler award at the 63rd annual Detroit Autorama held this past February, it became only the 4th Canadian entry in the past 50 years to receive such a great honor. As if this is not enough to capture front page headlines, even more relevant is the fact that Don and Elma are residents of Abbotsford, BC. Making this story even more dynamic, it is the 2nd consecutive Ridler award presented to the owner of a BC car! At last years Detroit show it was JF Launier of Desert Customs in Osoyoos, BC that reined supreme, capturing the award with his ‘Rivision’ creation, a ‘64 Buick Riviera that he built and owns. To put this into perspective, having another BC owned car win this year is comparable to having 2 residents of BC win the Nobel prize back to back. Absolutely ground shaking news on

the Automotive world stage. For those not familiar with the Ridler award, it is presented to a show car that is being debuted for the first time in public and is the best vehicle that emphasizes creativity, engineering and workmanship.

To understand how this all transpired lets go o back several years, when Don had a dream off having a car built for his wife Elma. Drawing g upon his memories of dating and honeymoonning in a ‘65 Impala Don decided it would be e the basis for his next car. Being no stranger to o owning some choice rides, he contacted a friend d who he relied on several times to fulfill his deesires of building 1st class machinery. Starting in 2005 Don has had a working relationship with th renowned car designer and builder Chip Foose, who is credited for building Don’s ‘49 Chev pick-up, his ‘37 Terraplane pick-up and the mid-engined o1 Hemisfear, all of which are outstanding customs.

R Renowned ccustom car d designer and builder, a C Chip Foose. on his own to become what many would say is the leading custom car designer and builder on the planet. For the past 8 seasons the hit TV series ‘Overhaulin’ has followed Chip and his team’s exploits as they work their magic on unsuspecting subject’s vehicles, transforming them from forlorn to fantastic.

Once Chip had agreed to take on Don’s project. he started with locating a suitable donor car that would supply the 1965 Chev outer body. Upon it being delivered to Chip’s shop in Southern California the next step was to acquire another ‘donor’ car that would supply all the underpinnings. For this Chip took delivery of a brand new 2008 Corvette from his local Chevrolet dealership, drove it 2 blocks to his shop, and then stripped the body off. From that point on it would take 6 1/2 years to fulfill Don’s wishes. For some of you it may not seem that difficult a task, taking a clean Impala body and plunking

it on a new car undercarriage. Even for some one as capable as Chip this was a major undertaking as the conversion required the construction of many hand built components and meticulous metal work. Since the Corvette is an intermediate size car and the Impala is full size, it required the Corvette’s frame to be lengthened 7 5/8” and the Impala body shortened, starting with 14” taken out of the rear body shell. The roof was then shortened 8” and chopped 1 1/2” with the windshield laid back 2 1/2”. The ‘C’ pillar was also leaned back to complete the lowered roof line. To match the front wheel wells the rears were raised 2” then moved forward 7”. Custom bumpers were fabricated which are fitted above hand made roll pans front and rear.

For the interior Chip hired a claymaker to create moulds extending and filling in the gaps caused by using the Corvette interior parts inside the Impala’s larger pas-

senger compartment after which the one off custom contoured panels were outfitted with new leather skins. Now a 2 seater, the rear is dominated by the stereo’s speaker system as well as storage compartments. Under the hood is evidence of more superb craftsmanship as the Corvette engine, which now produces 630 HP thanks to a Magna Supercharger is expertly finished. Wanting a warm earthy tone to adorn her new car Elma Voth chose this 2 tone custom colour combination that Chip calls Impostor Pearl light and dark. This is an environmentally friendly water based coating supplied by the Glasurit line of BASF paints.

Unlike many show cars, this car is completely functional, capable of driving down to the shopping mall or down to Florida. Because it retains the Corvette’s drivetrain, the car can be taken to any Chevrolet dealership for quick diagnosing if a problem were to arise .

JUST CUZ CUSTOMS From knee-high in weeds to a star attraction When Mitch Peacock first laid eyes on the vehicle that would become his “mistress,” it was anything but love at first sight.

Sitting in knee-high weeds, atop a small hill in a rural Albertan auto wrecking yard, the Divco was a white, squarish relic of a bygone era.

Or, as Peacock describes the ancient delivery truck: “It was a big, ugly, upholstered toilet.”

Peaock, who operates Jus Cuz Customs in Edmonton, was looking for a unique vehicle he could refurbish into a company delivery van, but when his contact showed him the decades-old Divco, he says he couldn’t stop laughing.

Ten years, countless hours of work, and hundreds of thousands of dollars later, the machine has elicited reverential responses from those who have seen it

at some of North America’s biggest car shows, including the 2013 SEMA Show, one of the largest custom car events in the world and the Super Nationals in New Mexico.

What was once “a wallflower” has been turned into a star attraction The Divco will be at Abbotsford at the BC Classic & Custom Car Show at Tradex, which runs from April 17 to 19.

Visitors will see a transformed truck.

The rust is long gone, eliminated and replaced by a gleaming green paint. The vehicle rides on 22-inch rims just inches from the ground and is powered by an overhauled drive train featuring an E-Rod 6.2-litre LS Series GM crate motor and four-speed automatic transmission.

Those overhauls required a beefier frame, which was reinforced by a heavy-duty suspension cross-member from a pick-up.

The interior – which once had just one seat – has been hand-fabricated by Steve Deman from Kolor Kings, save for vintage 1965 Thunderbird seats. Deman, who is based in Los Angeles, worked closely with Peacock on the design and also did the paint job.

Getting the vehicle into SEMA wasn’t easy, Peacock says, and the five-member build team had to cram two years of work into eight months. The project had them working nights, weekends, and whenever else he could find the time.

“That truck became my mistress,” he says. “My wife looks at that and goes, ‘I hate it,’ “ It also required a lot of problem solving.

“You can’t just go to your local supplier and find parts for a 60-year-old Divco,” he says. Instead, many components had to be manufactured on site.

But the payoff, he says, came when he saw the response from those at the SEMA Show. Those who had never seen a Divco were surprised by the unique vehicle. Peacock wasn’t sure though, what kind of response the radical redesign would receive from Divco partisans.

He needn’t have worried though.

“The Divco purists… were like ‘Oh my God, that’s insane.’ “ They meant that as a compliment.

At the Super Nationals, Peacock says he had people shaking his hand, thanking him for bringing such a “crazy” vehicle to the show.

“It was all ages,” he says. “It’s sort of like that bulldog: It’s so ugly it’s cute.

“It was really kind of neat to see the reaction that people were giving us because it’s such an oddball, unique kind of truck.”

A street legal hot wheel!

This 1964 International Loadstar CO-1700 was fabricated by the local crew at Hot Rods Restos out of Abbotsford. It made it’s debut at the 2014 SEMA show in November. The amazing story is it was built from the ground up in only 45 days after the truck was teleported out of Wisconsin 9 days earlier!!

For the common folk not familiar with the Loadstar CO1700, it was produced in a cabover-engine configuration.

HRR re-configured the set up and mid-mounted an LS3 engine in the custom chassis and fabricated a custom turbo kit, helping the engine produce anywhere from 800-1000 horsepower.

The transmission is a T56 transaxle from a Corvette, but customized it to a ‘side drive‘ with expert persuasion from the HRR crew.

The system is an offset drive and allows for a more forward placement of the output shafts. This street legal beast sits on air bags and suspension arms are straight off of a C6 Corvette. Anyone who played and collected Hot Wheels as a youth, will see where the inspiration of this creation was formed.

GRAFIX 25 years of paint customizations When I was 15, my father pulled into our driveway with his newly lettered work van. I was in utter awe at what this guy had just done with a paintbrush and a few cans of paint. I’ll never forget it. The painter’s name is Cliff Burgess, and that lettering job pointed me in the direction I’m still following today.

I’ve always been into art. I was drawing on the walls by the time I could steal my brother’s crayons, and blaming him. But this was that “moment.” So I pestered my father to ask Cliff if I could work for him. Cliff told my father he didn’t really need any help, but directed me to ask another sign painter he knew. This guy said yes. His name is Leif

Syvertsen, and his shop was the starting point to this wild ride.

I worked under Leif for about four years. He taught me a lot about layout and design, and stuff he may not have even known he was teaching me.

After about a year or so working for him, I asked if we could paint my car – a 1981 Honda Civic, with about 300,000 miles on it.

He agreed, and helped me prep the beast and paint it – process blue. In my head, I’m thinking, “Too much blue. I need to add something to it so it’s not so... blue.” I have access to a sign shop with an unlimited array of colourful vinyl to make some graphics. What colours do

I pick? Lime green and hot pink.

Hey, it was still the ‘80. So now I have a bright, blue car, with hot pink geometric shapes and lime green accents. Perfect!

What next? I opted to test drive my new brushes on the hood, by painting a cartoon kid with his finger jammed up his nose.

I was the coolest.

Fast forward another year or so, and another “moment” happened that has had a lasting relationship with me – the name “Nub.” I’ve made up so many different stories over the years, but here’s the truth. I was watching Saturday Night Live one night.

The skit “Buckwheat Sings” with Eddie Murphy was on. He was singing a bunch of different

songs, all of which were being spelled out incorrectly on the screen, exactly the way he was singing them.

He busted out “looking for love in all the wrong places,” and I laughed my can off. Done in petite eight-inch lettering, “WOOKIN PA NUB” was now emblazoned across my rear window. People just started calling me Nub. I thought maybe it wasn’t such a bad idea to have a name that was easily remembered, especially if I opened my own shop. So that’s what I did.

The original business name was Nub Designs, though shortly after I decided to swap the “designs” for “grafix.” It just sounded cooler.

The next 25 years, four shops, lifelong friendships, hardships, learning, being filmed painting bikes almost every day for 10 years, five dogs, four cats, an unexpected raccoon moving into my dream shop, and getting married to my beautiful wife has been an unbelievable ride crammed with madness and loads of fun.

I sometimes wonder if something I paint will have the same lasting effect on someone that Cliff’s truck lettering has had on me. I look forward to another 25 years of doing what I love to do – bringing my customer’s and friend’s visions to life, and feeling like that 15-year-old kid standing in the driveway.
