Carson Air cargo plane crash kills two pilots

search in an area known as Crown Mountain.

The twin prop aircraft operated by Carson Air took off from Vancouver at 6:55 Monday morning but by 7:10 a.m. air traffic control had lost contact with the airplane.

Search crews located the airplane overnight Monday and by Tuesday afternoon, the bodies of both pilots had also been found. No one else was on board.

While the cause has not been determined, flying conditions were challenging, according to

search and rescue.

“There were several issues that were challenging for the pilots,” said naval lieutenant Paul Trenholm, of the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Victoria, the lead search and rescue agency. “Notably the weather…there were low ceilings and turbulence and in addition to that there was very treacherous mountain terrain with deep snow reported by our ground crews.”

He’d barely ventured beyond the coverage of a parked truck, toward a cabin where a teenage girl was being held against her will, when a bullet fired from behind a plastic storm window, punctured Const. Neil Bruce’s lung and he fell to the ground.

Members rushed to the 26-year-old’s side, while the gunman fled, leading to one of the most “dramatic multiday manhunts in RCMP history” and the only death of a Kelowna Mountie while in the line of duty.

Bruce’s sacrifice is the stuff of legend in the Okanagan, as made evident by the large crowd who attended a ceremony at the mouth of Glen Canyon, honouring him 50 years to the day of the death.

And that, perhaps, is what may make the loss bearable for the friends, family and comrades he left behind.

“This little spot in the map right here, in what was then Westbank, is our Kamloops where three members were killed on June 18, 1962, and our Mayerthorp, where four members were murdered on March 3, 2005, and like those areas his fellow members and the community have not forgotten Neil,” said retired Staff Sgt. Jack Hest, pointing out that the school in his name keeps his memory alive, and for good reason.

“Nothing we have done or could do will compare to the sacrifice that Neil made for his community.”

Tuesday’s ceremony will likely be a “last hurrah for Neil” his comrades from 1965 will attend, said Hest, leaving future generations the responsibility to keep the slain Mountie’s memory— something Hest has been at the forefront of for decades.

The memorial service for Constable Neil Bruce was held at Glen Canyon Park in West Kelowna. the reason why there’s a middle school in the fallen Mountie’s name—the only school named for an RCMP member in all of Canada.

It’s not that Hest hadn’t seen violence in his 29-

year career. It’s just that Bruce’s death hit home.

“This one here was especially bad, he had asked me to work for him that day only he didn’t follow through with planning it, and

he was called out… it would have been me lying down there,” Hest said. “And he was a close personal friend, not only a comrade on the job, but off as well.”

“Liked and loved by

all who knew him” is the way Bruce has been characterized in the years since his death.

He also had a keen sense of duty, which he inherited from his father who served in two World Wars and, although he never got to see it, passed down to his son.

“It’s a calling,” said RCMP Supt. Don BruceFuoco, Bruce’s son, after the ceremony.

Newspapers at the time pointed out that he and his sister were under the age of two when Russell Spears took their father’s life. They came to know him through stories, as had their children.

When Bruce’s grandchildren were younger, they may not have comprehended what his sacrifice meat, but Bruce-Fuoco said that this memorial was a different thing altogether.

“Today’s service meant a lot,” he said. “Over the years, they’ve been so young, it’s been hard for them to comprehend.

“Today, as they’re older, it was very emotional for

them. He’s a historical figure…I think for them it was very impactful. I turned around and my son was in deep tears.”

During the ceremony he said, “there is no greater sacrifice, nor honour nor burden than to bear the loss of a spouse, parent, colleague or friend in service to their country, community and force.”

Among the others to speak at the ceremony was E-Division Deputy Commissioner Craig Callens, who noted that keeping the memory of Burce alive reflects well on the work men and women of the RCMP do every day in their community.

The project Dig Your Neighbourhood: Mission will be launched at at the Marmalade Cat Café, 2903 Pandosy St., in Kelowna on Saturday, April 18, from 3 to 5 p.m.

UBC Okanagan creative writing and visual arts students will launch 15 new works about and for the Mission neighbourhood of Kelowna.

Dig Your Neighbourhood (DYN) is a project of the UBCO Department of Creative Studies, where students create a package of art for a Kelowna neighbourhood which is then distributed by the Welcome Wagon Ltd.

“The students will be launching the new package created especially for the Mission and it is spectacular,” said UBCO associate professor Nancy Holmes.

Items include two children’s books, a “fitness guide” to the Mission, a package of meditation cards, a winery calendar featuring Mission wineries, placemats, greeting cards, illustrated books and much more.

According to the flight plan filed for Carson Air flight 66, the plane was expected to be flying at 20,000 feet en route to Prince George. However, the wreckage was found at just 4,500 feet on Crown Mountain, which peaks out at 4,900 feet. Overnight Monday search crews were able to locate the plane.

“Early (Monday) night search and rescue crews smelled aviation fuel that led them to discover parts of the wing and later on they were able to identify the exact identity of the plane via its tail number,” said Trenholm.

“Early (Tuesday) morning they located first one pilot and then Tuesday afternoon confirmed the location of the second pilot. Unfortunately they were both deceased.”

Carson Air employs about 50 people in Kelowna, where the head offices of the company are located, although the company also has bases in Vancouver, Calgary and Abbotsford and employs more than 100 people throughout those offices. The company does air cargo flights as well as air ambulance and also operates a flight training school.

“Everybody is really shaken up by this tragedy,” said Carson Air vice-president Kevin Hillier from his office in Kelowna. “Out of respect for the families of the victims, we’re not going to speculate on the causes or outcomes or anything like that. At this time we are working with the agencies involved. Everyone is very upset.”

The investigation has now been handed over to the B.C. Coroners Service as well as the Transportation Safety Board. The coroner was expected to release the names of the pilots on Wednesday. @KP_media1

Police make sizable MDEA drug seizure Three men have been arrested by Kelowna RCMP’s drug squad for their alleged involvement in the transfer of a suspicious package from China to West Kelowna.

On April 1, two 19-year-old males and one 20 yearold male were arrested from incident, now facing charges of importing a scheduled substance and possession of a scheduled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

On March 26, 2015, the police received information regarding a 12.7 kg package destined for West Kelowna from China. Laboratory analysis confirmed the substance as ethylone, better known by its street drug name of MDEA. This investigation is ongoing as police believe there maybe more potential suspects.

A Lake Country councilor says it would be a mistake for residents to vote no on purchasing the CN Rail corridor.

Coun. Owen Dickie says it would open the doors for the City of Kelowna to purchase the majority of the corridor, including 16 kilometres running through Lake Country.

Although there is no set plan to replace a possible $2.6 million shortfall should Lake Country residents vote no to borrowing its share of the cost in an April 25 referendum, Dickie says it’s imperative that residents don’t give Kelowna, or anyone else, the chance to own the corridor by voting no in the referendum.

“If they (Kelowna) put in the majority of the money they have the majority of the control on the corridor,” said Dickie, the Oyama representative on district council, in responding to a question at a yes campaign open house on Monday night in Lake Country.

“They’re not going to

come forward and pay the majority of the shares and then not expect to have the majority of control.

“That’s one reason why we incorporated: So we could get out from underneath the City of Kelowna. We could lose control of the asset (if we vote no).”

Dickie made the comments at a public forum attended by hundred of people in Lake Country.

Participants heard from several groups including Friends of the South Slopes and volunteers who helped build the Mission Greenway in Kelowna as well as other trail groups ahead of the referendum in Lake Country.

Dickie said losing control to Kelowna would allow the larger municipality to have control of prime land going though Lake Country.

He pointed to the issue of Kelowna’s city boundary with Lake Country, which currently extends into Winfield and absorbs several industrial operations that pay taxes to the City of Kelowna.

Where, when to vote The first of six voting opportunities on the CN Rail corridor purchase referendum begins today (April 15).

The advance poll in Winfield at the District of Lake Country Municipal Hall on Bottom Wood Lake Road is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voters will have their first chance to indicate support for borrowing up to $2.6 million to purchase 50 per cent of the discontinued CN rail corridor within District of Lake Country boundaries.

Mail ballots are also available by completing and returning the Application and Registration to Vote by Mail before 4 p.m. Thursday, April 23, to the chief or deputy chief election officer.

Residents of Lake Country for at least 30 days, who are 18 years or older, have lived in B.C. for at least six months and are Canadian citizens are eligible to vote.

Voters need to bring two pieces of ID, at least one with a signature, and one that proves residency, to the polling station. General voting day is Saturday, April 25 at George Elliott Secondary School.

“I do know the corridor is going to be sold— there are no ifs, ands or buts—and it’s my feeling we have to maintain control of the corridor regardless,” said Dickie.

“There is some discussion now with people saying, ‘Why would we buy this because Kelowna is just going to step forward if we don’t?’

“I see it as any individual or group owning the corridor in Lake Country, other than the District of Lake Country, is a threat to Lake Country.”

Residents both for and against the rail corridor purchase raised questions about the purchase.

Long-time Oyama resident Allan Gatzke said while the corridor goes from Kelowna to Coldstream, the greatest impact of the purchase will be felt in Oyama where some homes are within only a few feet of the corridor.

“If you look at some of the properties along the track, you will see how easy it is for someone to vote no,” said Gatzke, whose family owns land that is split by the corridor.

“For those of us not

affected in that way it’s hard to understand why anyone would vote no. I would not want to sleep in that bedroom that is just a few metres away from the track.”

Gatzke said while his family would prefer to keep the privacy they have now with the abandoned CN corridor, he said because of the greater benefit of the community and all of the positives that come with purchasing the corridor, his family will support the purchase.

“Voting yes for the railway is not our first choice,” said Gatzke.

“We would prefer to maintain our privacy and security. But voting no is not the choice.

The things that come along with a no vote... in the case of Oyama it would mean little or no beach available to the public.

“The economic driver (of a trail) won’t come with a no vote.”

Advance polls opened today in Lake Country as residents are being asked to approve the district’s borrowing bylaw.

If approved the final $2.6 million of a $22-million deal between CN Rail and Kelowna,

Seniors advocate report reiterates need for change British Columbia’s seniors advocate Isobel Mackenzie released a report last week which highlighted three key issues of immediate concern to seniors.

The report’s findings were labeled by some as startling, but won’t come as a surprise for those advocating for philosophic and attitude changes to our health care system priorities.

Mackenzie’s findings in her report suggests: * Too many seniors have been incorrectly placed in residential care, taking up valuable hospital bed spots. “If we are filling up even five per cent of those scarce beds wth folks who could live independently, that is 1,500 beds that could open up provincewide,” she said in her report. * Overuse of medication—the report suggests 34 per cent of seniors living in residential care are being prescribed antipsychotic medication, while only four per cent of those seniors have been diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder. And nearly half of seniors in this category are being prescribed antidepressants, while only a quarter of them have been diagnosed with depression. *The lack of rehabilitative therapies in the province’s residential care facilities. “Getting seniors moving properly and keeping them moving is absolutely key to maintaining function and independence. The downward spiral can begin very quickly if a frail senior is immobilized in bed for a week or more…”

The signal out of this report is to again ask the question of our health care system expectations: Do we want to continue reacting to health concerns or make a greater effort to prevent them from happening in the first place?

The answer to that tends to be reflected by following where our health care dollars are spent, placing less emphasis on reacting to health concerns and more effort focused on preventative health education measures.

Treaty cash cow may dry up The B.C. Treaty Commission and its Victoria News federal and provincial financiers put on a brave show last TOM week, celebrating FLETCHER a “milestone” in negotiations for a modern treaty with five Vancouver Island First Nations.

A regional group representing the Songhees, Beecher Bay, T’Souke, Malahat and Snaw-Naw-As (Nanoose) First Nations have reached the “agreement in principle” stage of negotiations with Canada and B.C., after 20 years of treaty talks.

This is similar to the treaty finalized in 2007 with another five-member Vancouver Island group called Maa-Nulth First Nations. The Te’mexw Treaty Association agreed to accept 1,565 hectares of provincial Crown land and $142 million in federal cash to settle its historic aboriginal title.

Alas, agreement in principle is but the fourth of sixth stages. Now a platoon of lawyers takes over from the roomful of negotiators to produce the final legal text. It will be years before this treaty can be presented to the B.C. legislature and the House of Commons in Ottawa, if it ever is.

These elaborate ceremonies will never be viewed the same again after the release of federal treaty advisor Doug Eyford’s report last month. The Te’mexw event seemed to have an extra urgency after Eyford’s observation that much of this costly activity has become a job creation program for those involved.

These Vancouver Island communities deserve credit for setting aside their own territorial disputes. It’s more than most have done. Eyford concluded after a long summer of meetings last year that many treaty negotiation teams in this province and across the country show no such inclination.

In B.C. and elsewhere in Canada, there is a “conspicuous lack of urgency in negotiations” and “sharp divisions” between parties, most of which have

been at the table for a decade or more, Eyford found.

This is what has come to be known as the “aboriginal industry,” where lawyers and consultants have a seemingly endless supply of lucrative work, much of it of questionable value. For some aboriginal participants, attending treaty meetings year after year is the best paying job they have ever had.

Indeed, a common feature of the province’s dealings with aboriginal communities is that their leaders demand meetings, and then demand to be paid to attend them.

This latest Vancouver Island treaty, assuming it is ever finalized, would at least in part replace the Douglas Treaties, signed by B.C.’s colonial governor James Douglas in the 1850s.

These treaties around Fort Victoria were quickly concluded if nothing else. The Beecher Bay Band was paid 45 pounds, 10 shillings for most of Sooke and another 43 pounds and change for its Metchosin territory.

One of the biggest missing pieces in the latest agreement in principle is the share of federallyregulated fisheries. This has been a theme of B.C. Treaty Commission reports in recent years, as Ottawa holds up treaties for years because it is unable or unwilling to offer shares of salmon in particular.

Hunting and fishing rights are acknowledged even in historic treaties, and reaffirmed by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Sharing these rights while maintaining conservation of fish stocks has been more than Ottawa, and in some cases neighbouring aboriginal communities, have been able to manage.

Eyford’s findings, and the B.C. government’s sudden refusal to keep staffing a B.C. Treaty Commission that shows so little progress, have sent one overdue message.

If participants aren’t prepared to make real compromises and show a willingness to conclude agreements rather than drag them out, they should leave and come back when they are ready to do so.

From peacekeepers to warmongers To the editor: Just what kind of a nation have we become? How quickly we have gone from a nation of peace keepers to a nation at war with half of the world; Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, and now Russia. What next, Iran, North Korea? And why?

[Prime Minister Stephen] Harper, the man of conflicting answers, tells us that these are not really wars, but necessary conflicts.

Necessary because we must stand with the USA and Israel as our major allies. Necessary because we must shoot others before they shoot us. Necessary because we are right and, as a matter of survival, those that disagree must be taught a lesson. Or are we getting the government that we deserve?

The easiest route is to not allow our emotions to be confused by facts. Go with the crowd, follow the blind reason of jingoistic logic, otherwise known as “confirmation bias”: Accept only those facts that support your beliefs.

Case in point: The Ukraine, beloved ancestral homeland for many of our population. An emerging country now involved in a civil conflict with Russia as it seeks to sever historic republican bonds.

Fearsome Russian hordes under the dictatorial leadership of ‘madman’ Putin now threaten the borders of this a pro-democratic state.

Must we stand idle in the face of such a threat? Surely we must begin assembly of our atomic arsenal under our alliance with NATO. After all, we are good and Russia is evil.

But hold on a second: Is violence the only answer to violence? Before we allow our emotions to rule our reason, let’s first consider a few historic points; 1. The Ukraine is not and never has been a member of NATO. 2. Consider the historic moment when U.S. president Reagan made the famous

declaration; “Mr. Gorbachov, tear down that [Berlin] wall!” And to the great credit of the USSR leadership, the wall came down and with it, the cold war came to an end. What is forgotten is that the agreement was based on the promise that NATO would not take advantage of the wall’s removal by expansion of its alliance, (along with its atomic missiles) in an eastward threat to the very borders of the USSR. Unformalized by written treaty, this ‘casual promise’ is now ‘casually forgotten’.

Strange how we understand the Cuban missile crisis and the NIMBY principles as they apply to us but not to others?

3. While the Ukraine was part of the USSR, Khrushchev, of Ukrainian birth, expanded the boundaries of the Ukraine to facilitate controlled access to the Black Sea, for the mutual benefit of neighbouring republics, and particularly Russia. (A hypothetical comparative might be an agreed alteration of our provincial borders. Say Canada facilitating annexation of Labrador to Quebec for government convenience for some imaginable and friendly reason. Then Quebec decides to break from Canada and wants to take Labrador with it.)

4. Putin is a dictator, he’s cruel but he is not dumb. He enjoys popular support at home because he is a strong man defending Russian honour and pride. Confrontation with NATO because of its disrespect for Russian sovereignty and interference in its internal affairs is an ideal platform for his continual hold on power.

Taking all of the facts into consideration, can we not become involved in a more positive way to work toward ending the conflict rather than inflaming it?

A similar analysis can be made with the Middle East conflicts. We have set up the state of Israel and are pledged to support its continued existence. Does this mean that we

must now turn a blind eye to human rights?

Are locked in to disregarding the rights and KELOWNA CROSSING (BY COSTCO) needs of those displaced and subjugated into 140-2463 Hwy 97 778-484-2688 perpetual refugee status as a consequence?

Does this necessarily mean a religious divide with a disrespect or lack of appreciation forof the Central and South Okanagan / Similkameen those of different beliefs?

“Do onto others as you would do unto you.” A Golden Rule for selective application?

With a true appreciation of historic facts, how can we rush to judgment with the typical good vs. evil paint brush? In any war of ideas which is more powerful—the provision of food or bullets? And what about of the Central and South ‘statesmanship’ and ‘diplomacy’ in workingOkanagan / Similkameen together with conflicted parties to find a better resolution than ‘might makes right’?

Of course there are always the less sane forces of anarchy and destruction. These are the extremist forces based on hatred in defiance of civilized reason. When terror, death and destruction becomes an end in itself, as with ISIS, we are truly then faced with a cancer that calls for a forceful protective response. In terms of our international community brotherhood, these forces of insane extremism are the exception All Services rather than the rule. Bill C-51 strips Canadians of our rights To the editor: Every Canadian should be outraged at this latest attack on our human rights and on our democracy by Stephen Harper and his Conservative government. American legislation following the 9/11 terrorist attacks paralleled Bill C-51 as it stripped the basic human rights of Americans. The effect on two Canadians was devastating.

The FBI arrested Canadian Maher Arar at JFK airport on September 26, 2002 as he was traveling from Tunisia to Montreal, returning from a holiday. After Bush labeled him an ”enemy combatant” he was denied legal counsel, prevented from seeking help from the Canadian embassy, and in a process called “rendition” he was flown to Syria, at that time an American client state. He was imprisoned and tortured for 13 months

before it was determined that he had no connection whatsoever to terrorism and was set free.

Omar Kadr, another Canadian, was arrested in Afghanistan at the age of 15 and imprisoned at Guantanamo in Cuba for eight years without ever being charged with a crime. He was tortured repeatedly, was denied access to a lawyer, was imprisoned with adults in a place where adult rape of children was rampant, and when he was finally given the right to appear before a military commission, in January of 2008, the UN Special Representative for Children in Armed Conflict was denied access to Kadr or to his farcical trial. The UN attempted to have child soldiers like Kadr declared victims of war, rather than enemy combatants, but the American military ignored that attempt.

Resources to combat TB To the editor: Congratulations are in order for the BC Interior Health Authority. After seven long years, the TB outbreak in Kelowna has ended.

It started in 2008 with one person with regular TB. Kelowna doctor, Sue Pollock, said TB outbreaks “typically last several years and require a tremendous amount of resources and community coordination to bring under control.” Approximately 2,400 people were screened for TB and 52 were treated.

Upgrades to hospital isolation wards, staff training and clinical support tools were needed. Medical health officers and

communicable disease workers worked closely with community outreach services including street nurses, shelters and community agencies. It cost B.C. taxpayers millions. All from one case of regular TB. Canadian funded TB REACH is a phenomenally successful program for finding TB in the hardest to reach places in the world.

The Harper government has not renewed the funding.

At that military commission Kadr was given the choice of pleading guilty and spending another eight years behind bars or going back to Guantanamo and spending the rest of his life behind bars.

This is what we have to look forward to if Bill C-51 is adopted in Canada. This is a dangerous piece of legislation and is far more of a threat to our freedom than ISIS or al Qaeda ever was.

In the month since it was launched BC Tree Fruits foray into the cider business has been smash hit.

“We’re almost out of our first run,” said the co-op’s marketing manager, Chris Pollock, as he led us on a tour of the facility.

The feedback he’s heard about Broken Ladder in the days since the soft launch has all been “great” and it’s made for new excitement.“At the end of the day, our mandate is to maximize returns

to our grower base. This product and industry are allowing us to do that,” said Pollock. “We did the research on it, and we made sure it was something that would make sense to our grower group.”

The cider is made exclusively off Okanagan apples. Five varieties are squeezed, blended and fermented then the sixth is added for sweetness.

It all happens at the co-operative’s own cidery adjacent to the old packinghouse on Clement Avenue, and without the addition of sugar or flavouring, turned into Broken Ladder.

Kelowna’s former mayor Walter Gray and former councillor Andre Blanleil have each accepted an appointment to the Kelowna International Airport advisory committee.

Their appointments as “community-atlarge members,” was announced at city council Monday afternoon.

Meryle Corbett was appointed as the aviation industry representative to the committee.

There are 20 members who represent the various business and social needs of the communities in the Okanagan Valley.

Elected officials from

member communities are appointed to the committee by their respective local governments and serve a four-year term.

Media outlets across the valley are helping Okanagan College to spread the word about the fundraising campaign behind the renovation and expansion of the $33-million Trades Training Complex at Okanagan College’s Kelowna campus—and the added awareness has helped to bring in some life-changing support for students.

Global Okanagan and Shaw Media, Bell Media, Black Press, Daily Courier, and Castanet have donated over $385,000 collectively in advertising and media support to the Bright Horizons Building for Skills Fundraising campaign. The goal of the campaign is to raise $7 million: $5 million for construction on the new three-storey trades tower along KLO Road, and $2 million for program and student support, which includes bursaries and other assistance to help students enter into trades programs.

IRRIGATION START UP There are many important elements to maintaining a lawn, water is one of them. An automatic sprinkler system is the best way to deliver the water it needs. Recharging your irrigation system typically starts in April and is dependent on whether or not the frost is still in the ground.

When you can get a shovel in down a full 12 inches, then you are usually good to go.

Irrigation systems vary, but they are installed with the same basic principles. Following are some simple tips for starting up your system for the first time in the spring.

One important thing to remember is your system was blown out in the fall with air – if you do not open the valves – air compresses – water does not.

You may break something in your system if you do not open the valves before recharging your system.

• check all valve boxes for rodent nests and debris • re-attach any fittings removed in the fall (be sure to use teflon tape if necessary). Ensure all valves and or drains are open and water source is connected slowly open the water source valve and begin filling up the system when water starts coming out of the drain close the drain valve.

• close the other valves as the air is cleared out of the system and water starts to come out of the heads and sprinklers. Once the system is pressurized, run through the stations one by one, letting each station operated for two to four minutes.

• inspect to ensure the sprinklers are spraying properly, for leaks and any other problems.

• set current time and check schedule on controller unit.

Hairstylist Colleen Woelders arrived in Kelowna on a bus from Vancouver Island 15 years ago, with a dislocated and broken shoulder and her eight-month-old son in her arms.

She was exhausted and terrified, having finally gathered the courage to leave her partner after another violent attack.

“He used to take the steel-toed boots to me, and he had kicked me several times in the past.

This time I decided I had enough and reached out for help,” she recalled.

A counsellor from the Kelowna Women’s Shelter picked her and her infant son up at the bus station, and brought them back to the shelter, where Woelders could finally get some rest.

“I had been awake all night. Just the feeling of being in a safe place with my son, where I could get some sleep and start to gather my strength gave me such a sense of relief that I could breathe and finally start to heal,” she said.

Colleen Woelders understands from first-hand experience how the Kelowna Women’s Shelter services can help turn your life around.

In the coming weeks, Woelders cried a lot of tears, attended countless individual and group counselling sessions, and started to realize she didn’t have to protect her abuser anymore.

“I was so brainwashed, fearful, tired and beaten down,” she explained.

“The counsellors at the shelter were so amazing, and it was powerful to go from being so controlled and dependent on him to becoming a stronger and more independent

woman.”

One day during her stay at the shelter, she saw an employment posting for a hairdresser, and bravely walked in and applied for the job.

Fifteen years later, Woelders owns and operates her own business, Kelowna Hair Design, and gives back by training high school students, offering special needs employment opportunities, and providing free services to Kelowna Women’s Shelter

clients.

“I know what it feels like to be in that situation.

I will always have my chair open for that emergency colour for the girl that’s running and hiding. I will step up and help her change her appearance and do what I can to keep her safe and feeling good about herself.”

Of her time at the shelter, Woelders remembers it as “lifesaving,” saying if she can help one woman make the decision to leave an abusive relationship by speaking out about her experience it is worth it.

“I want women who are in this situation to know if they can face their fears and gather the courage to reach out for help, there is a better, brighter, happier future ahead, and life can be wonderful.”

Fearfully fleeing the partner who was supposed to love, respect and cherish you, but has instead abused and hurt you and your children time and time again.

You have nothing but the clothes on your back and the hard-won courage it took to finally leave a toxic relationship that has left you beaten down, questioning yourself, and feeling alone and ashamed.

For many women in our community, this scenario is an all too common reality.

For those with limited options, the Kelowna Women’s Shelter offers safe haven; providing housing, food, clothing, information, and the counseling and support they need, all at no charge.

The shelter has a long history in the community. Its team of dedicated, highly-trained staff have helped thousands of women and children get a fresh start and move towards a future free of abuse since the shelter opened its doors in 1980.

But 35 years later, the problem of violence against women shows no signs of going away.

On average, every six days a woman in Canada is killed by her intimate partner.

Between 2004 and 2014, domestic violence claimed the lives of 113 women in British Columbia, an average of 10 women a year.

Violence and abuse drive more than 100,000 women and children out of their homes and into Canadian shelters every year.

Last year, more than 200 of them spent at least one night in the Kelowna Women’s Shelter.

They are our neighbours, our friends, our co-workers. Members of this community who attend school, shop for groceries, attend church and go to work.

Jail not appropriate for criminals with mental disorders Whenever the media highlights a particularly violent and random crime, questions arise about the perpetrator’s mental state.

It seems hard to imagine that anyone in their right mind would inflict violence on a stranger.

After the question is raised, the inevitable public discussion occurs about our country’s laws and whether the perpetrator should be held criminally responsible for his or her actions.

Our current government advocates a tough on crime approach and last year introduced a bill making changes to the law as it relates to people being found not criminally responsible.

The bill (C-54, later re-named C-14) recognizes public safety as paramount in decisions, and creates a

recently in the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry provides a longitudinal look at 1,800 cases from Quebec, Ontario and B.C. where this verdict was found and gives valuable information about the verdict, the people, their histories and their longterm outcomes.

A few of the interesting findings show 51 per cent had no prior criminal convictions, and 72 percent had at least one prior mental health hospitalization.

When offences occurred against people, the most common targets were family members followed by police and mental health workers.

Strangers were the target in 22 per cent of cases.

Three quarters of the sample group was on government assistance at the time of their crime and 10 percent were homeless.

Psychotic symptoms were the most common diagnosis and a third of the sample also had a co-occurring substance abuse problem.

This review also showed women were less likely to have a criminal history, less likely to offend against strangers, had fewer risk factors for recidivism so less likely to re-offend when back in the community.

Recidivism is one of the more interesting factors to consider, as it is often the rationale used to support a tough on crime policy. This review found a 16 per cent recidivism rate at threeyear follow up and some differences between provinces. People whose offense was a serious violent offence had the lowest three-year recidivism rate for any type of re-offense.

An informed debate would have considered some of these facts— most who are found not criminally responsible have not committed offences involving serious violence, the level of violence tells us nothing about the risk of recidivism and most are already known to the civic mental health system.

Since recidivism rates are lower than those seen for people being released from prison, the review boards seem to be doing a good job.

It would also be interesting to see what impact the new legislation has on the outcomes for this group.

In my opinion, it is not helpful to have mentally ill people in jail where they have limited access to proper treatment and supports.

VA Angels, one of Canada’s leading angel investment groups, has reached the milestone of funding 100 early-stage companies, several of which hail from Kelowna.

The group, founded 12 years ago, has seen its 125 members invest more than $38 million into start-up companies during that time.

Seven of the group’s 100 companies come from the Okanagan.

Randy Thompson, the founder of VA Angels, said it’s a “fantastic testament” to both members and organizers in Kelowna.

“The (business) ecosystem here is fantastic and it’s a nobrainer for us to be part of it,” he said.

Duane Lockwood is the CEO of Hoopla, a free online gaming company that issues points to people who play its games. The points are then translated into funds which can be donated to a variety of charities.

Hoopla was invited to present to VA, and Lockwood said they were “fortunate enough to resonate” with some of the members who invested in his company.

“It was a great opportunity to really look at our model, and put it into a brief presentation so we could present it in 10 minutes,” he said.

“They (VA) helped us, but more importantly is those seasoned investors were resources for us and acted as a sounding board. So we’ve really, really utilized our members.”

He said it wasn’t just money that VA provided —it was also mentorship

and advice to help the company continue forward. “I’ve become a member and I enjoy it.

I’m looking forward to bringing Hoopla to the world, and VA was a big part of it.”

Randy Lennon is the president of both the Kelowna and Phoenix chapters of VA. He said no company should ever think it’s not at the stage where it could possibly present to VA.

“Even the famous ones that have started in Kelowna, all the way to the Googles and the Apples, they all started as a start-up company,” he said.

“Someone had some faith in these people, and decided to either stepup and help them with mentorship, or in a lot of instances they wrote a cheque.”

Lennon explained that potential investors often

don’t know where to start.

“They can come and join the VA Angels as an accredited investor, and we even recommend that they don’t do any investing for the first six months,” he said.

“They go on their own little training program, and they come and sit and meet all the other investors. Over the years being an angel investor you learn so much.”

income families based on a family net income amount (line 236) of your tax return. Base amount is $272 for each spouse and $143 per child. Family income must be below $35,465 Working Income Tax Benefit—intended to supplement those who are already working.

Single people are eligible for a maximum benefit of $998 if their income is between $6,992 and $17,986. Family incomes need to be between $10,252 and $27,736 to receive up to the maximum benefit of $1.813. The provinces have companion programs.

Family Tax Cut—to reduce the tax burden on families by equalizing the income between the spouses if there are children under 18 in the family. The transfer could be up to $50,000 resulting in a tax savings of up to $10,000 per family.

Children’s fitness tax credit and Children’s arts tax credit—a credit of up to $500 for fees paid for a membership or attendance in an approved program for a child under 16 years of age. The limits increase if

the child is disabled.

Child care expenses—a credit for child care paid for children under 16 years of age. The basic credit is $7,000 per child unless the child is disabled which increases the credit up to $10,000. The credit is calculated based on net income (line 236 of the tax return).

Disability amount— is an additional credit of $7,766 (adult) $4,530 (child) that requires Form T2201 to be filled out by your doctor and sent into the Canada Revenue Agency. The provinces also have a similar credit.

Several of the other credits also have a disability component that is also supported by the form T2201.

Family Caregiver amount—is an additional $2,000 credit for those persons who are taking care of others in their home. This credit can cover such items as taking the dependant person to doctors and other appointments.

Public transit amount— is a credit for monthly public transit passes purchased for students and seniors. You must submit the actual monthly pass, the debit slip is not accepted.

Home buyers’ amount—is a method of borrowing funds against your RRSP for the first time purchase of a home, that can be paid back over several years by contributing back into your RRSP or by taking the payment as income.

There are also provincial and territorial programs as well as medical expense credit, RRSP, RESP (education) and RDSP (disability).

Joy Henderson has been working as a volunteer at Kelowna General Hospital for the past 15 years.

The 79-year-old Kelowna resident doesn’t get paid for her volunteer time, but the difference it makes to her own life and to those who require the need of hospital services more than make up for that.

“I got involved with the hospital because I had other friends who were volunteering there when I started out. I’ve enjoyed it ever since, meeting a lot of nice people and people telling you all the time how much they appreciate what you are doing for the hospital and for them,” Henderson said.

“There is always a good feeling that goes along with giving back.”

Henderson can be found with her three co-volunteers every Thursday afternoon working behind the counter of the Royal Bistro, cooking up on the grill whatever is ordered from the menu.

People familiar with the hospital will remember it previously as The Snackery prior to the expansion of the hospital in recent years.

“Often people come in there, they are alone and (their friend, family member or spouse) is in the hospital being treated for something, and the may well be from out of town given KGH is a regional hospital.

“I they really need is someone to talk to or meet, to have a place to go for a break. It’s times like that it feels like a

really worthwhile process what we do in our own little corner of the hospital.”

Henderson is one of about 800 volunteers who support a variety of services under the auspices of the Kelowna General Hospital Foundation, from working at various venues in the hospital like the gift shop, Royal Bistro and the Perking Lot, to the Rutland Auxiliary Thrift Shop and at Cottonwoods Care Home.

They collectively are the core support group that allows the foundation to provide services that raise money for the hospital to buy new equipment or fulfill other patient care needs.

For example, the Rutland Auxiliary Thrift Shop, staffed by volunteers, has donated more than $3.5 million to the hospital since it was founded 52 years ago.

Nancy Wells, business enterprises manager for the KGH Foundation, said its volunteers that allow the foundation to operate several business enterprises to help with fundraising and providing services to patients and those visiting the hospital.

“To have a gift shop, the coffee kiosk, the Royal Bistro, the engraving business which is part of the gift shop, right on site is not normal for most hospitals,” Well said.

“I’m always being asked how we managed to do that.”

Part of the reason for that is because those services are volunteer-driven, where opportunities are presented to volunteer for as little or as many hours as you wish.

“It’s all about paying something forward. Everyone has a fit with us. Some people don’t want a lot of responsibility,”Wells said. “ They just want a task to do for four hours a week, whether retired or not, and go home and relax. Others may have led an active work lifestyle and retired but still want to remain active and involved.”

The latter characteristic is often seen among babyboomers who are retiring at a younger age than the previous generation but still have a lot of energy to give in some way to their community.

“We never have enough volunteers so there is always a way to make someone fit a need that we have and that fits in with their background or interest,” he said.

••• Sandra Moglin has been volunteering at the Rutland Auxiliary Thrift Shop, located on Dougall Rd. South near Highway 33, for about five years, currently serving as the manager for the store.

Moglin had worked in a bank most of her life, and when she and her husband retired to Kelowna from Saskatchewan, she saw the auxiliary thrift shop as a way to volunteer and keep herself busy.

“I was just always used to doing something. I couldn’t just sit at home and do nothing,” she laughed.

Moglin, 72, said her story is similar to many of the volunteer staff at the thrift shop, they just like to get out and share some female compan-

ionship and pride in making a worthwhile contribution to the hospital and their community.

“Most of us are in the 50 to 70 age range. We have one lady who has volunteered 37 years for the auxiliary and many others who have been with us a long time,” Moglin said.

“We really feel good about what we are doing and gives us an opportunity to raise money for the hospital, as health care services are something that we or people close to each of us will all need at some point in our lives.”

Another connection on some level with most of their volunteers is the donations raised remain in the community, and benefit something has carries a

real identity for people—their hospital.

••• The Kelowna General Hospital Foundation will host a Volunteer Fair on Saturday, April 18,10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Kelowna General Hospital’s Centennial Building lobby.

The event will offer the general public information about the foundation, and to learn what volunteer opportunities are available with the foundation to assist the hospital.

There will also be free parking available in the Rose Avenue parkade.

The foundation’s current volunteer roster ranges in age from 14 to 98. “There is no age discrimination to volunteer with us,” said Wells.

The Family Friend Program at KCR provides friendship and mentorship to single mothers in our community.

We are proud of our volunteers who enhance the lives of local families through this connection.

Even from those first raw and uncertain days of his career with the Kelowna Rockets, Cole Martin exhibited an acute talent for defending his territory.

Then-assistant coach Dan Lambert remembers a young, 17-year-old Texan taking to the ice against Medicine Hat one night four seasons ago and not giving away an inch to Tigers’ star Emerson Etem.

“One thing we noticed early is that Cole was a great defender,” said Lambert, the Rockets head coach. “Medicine Hat had Etem, he had 60 goals that year and he had just blown by a defenceman.

“We challenged Cole that night, matched him up against Etem and he didn’t get around him at any time…not once.

We’ve used him that way ever since and he’s been a very effective player for us.”

And other than becoming more polished and experienced over the years, not much has changed in Martin’s approach as the 21-yearold Texan winds down his major junior career.

Martin’s penchant for defending and his distaste for being beaten one-onone is borne out in the numbers.

For three consecutive seasons, the 5-foot-11, 175-pound rearguard has

led his club in plus-minus, racking up a combined rating of +152, including a team record +61 in 2013-14.

It’s been a pretty emotional year, it’s been tough and it’s really been a blast all at the same time…”

“It’s pretty cool, I’ve had a pretty good run but that’s not something you can do on your own,” said Martin, the active leader in games played for the Rockets with 316. “I had (Jordon) Cooke and (Damon)

Still, even though the team always comes first, Lambert said Martin deserves every bit of individual recognition that comes his way.

“The most amazing thing about that stat (plus-minus) is that those numbers are usually put up by guys who have big offensive stats, too,” said Lambert. “He’s never really been a points guy and he plays a lot against the other team’s top players, so that’s what stands out.

“Cole has a high compete level, he uses his stick well, his ability to turn is as good as you’ll see,” Lambert added.

“He’s a great team guy, too, we’re really going to miss his compete and his attitude.”

For Martin, who arrived from Texas four years ago knowing no one in Kelowna, his time in a Rockets’ uniform has gone far too quickly.

“It’s been a pretty emotional year, it’s been tough and it’s really been a blast all at the same time,” said Martin.

Kelowna Rockets’ defenceman Joe Gatenby has been named the 2015 WHL Ryobi Hardest Working Player of the Year.

Gatenby, 17, who was chosen as his club’s J hardest working player, won the award after a league-wide fan poll.

The Hardest Working Player of the Year is designed to honour the player who best exemplifies dependability, quality of play and commitment to his team throughout the regular season.

Gatenby had two goals, 15 points and a +26 rating in 65 games in 2014-15.

So with six weeks or less remaining in his WHL career, it’s no surprise how the affable Texas would prefer to sign off his days in Rockets colours.

“I’ve said from the beginning of the year this

is a special team and we really have a chance to do some great things,” he said. “Not everything is going to go smoothly, the guys know that but we’re confident we have the team.

“I can’t lie, I’d be disappointed if we didn’t

win the WHL title,” he added, “but I would never any regrets coming here, the lifelong friends, a great four-year career.

I’ve enjoyed all of it.”

Martin and the Rockets will take on the Royals tonight in Victoria in Game 4 of the Western

A pair of game-winning goals was enough to earn Tyson Baillie the WHL player of the week award.

The Rockets’ centre tallied three goals and added an assist as Kelowna defeated Victoria over the weekend in the first two games of the WHL’s Western Conference semifinal.

On Friday, the Fort Saskatchewan, AB native had a goal and an assist including the game winner in a 5-0 win over the Royals.

On Saturday, Baillie scored twice, including the decisive goal at 58 seconds of overtime in a 4-3 Rockets victory.

Shutting down the Okanagan Athletics’ junior program wasn’t part of the plan for the 2015 baseball season.

But with a shortage of players at both the senior and junior levels, a decision was made to combine the resources of the two teams.

The result is a wellstocked senior A’s team which now has 19 players on the roster—instead of the initial 14—for the B.C. Premier Baseball League season.

“What it does is add strength to our team and now no one is guaranteed playing time,” said A’s coach Evan Bailey. “We

have enough players now that they’re going to push one another and I think make us a better team overall.

“We didn’t like to have to shut down the juniors, but with such a lack of numbers (10 players) it’s hard to run a team,” added Bailey who expects the junior team to return next year.

Okanagan’s newfound depth was evident on opening weekend as the A’s took three of four games from the Whalley Chiefs at Elks Stadium.

Saturday was particularly productive day up and down the lineup as the Athletics won both games by a combined score of 25-5.

“It was a good way to

start,” Bailey said. “We were really good that day, they weren’t so good so it was a combination of things. We threw the ball well and made the most of our opportunities.”

In the opener, Easton Forrest tossed a four hitter over five innings as Okanagan made short work of the Chiefs 12-2.

Trevor Lofstrom paced the offence with three RBIs, while Chase Decosse and McCoy Pearce stole three bases each. All of Pearce’s steals, including home, came in one sequence during a sevenrun third inning.

In Game 2, Markus Glowacki drove in three runs in a 13-3 victory.

for his first win.

In Game 3 Sunday morning, Whalley fought back with an 11-8 win.

Decosse drove in three runs in a losing cause.

But the A’s rebounded in the series finale with a 5-3 victory. Keaton Mandryk went all the way on the mound scattering nine hits.

Decosse was a terror on the base paths, stealing eight bases and scoring seven times.

Pearce also scored seven runs, Lofstrom had five RBIs and Dylan Faulkner batted .375 with three RBIs, four walks and three runs scored.

Bailey also praised Sam Avila for his solid play at shortstop.

In Nanaimo over the weekend, three games were decided by a single run, with the other being a two-run game. The Coyotes had just 19 hits in the series.

In the opener, OC lost 3-2 as the Mariners scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.

Coyotes starter Cole Parusinni had a strong outing yielding just one run in seven innings.

In Game 2, OC had just four hits in a 3-1 loss.

Brandon Graham had two of the hits and an RBI. In the third game, Austin Penner tossed a two-hitter for VIBI as the Mariners prevailed 2-1.

Marcus Drewry was solid in the loss, giving up two runs and five hits over six innings.

In the series finale on Sunday afternoon, OC avoided a sweep with a 5-4 victory in nine innings.

The Coyotes, who overcame a 4-0 deficit,

scored the winning run in the ninth on a dropped third strike call, as Logan Wedgewood came home safely.

Wedgewood had two hits and Ryo Shishido had two hits and two RBIs. Brett Flemming picked up the win in relief.

Wedgewood is leading the team in hitting this season with a .380 average, 19 hits and 11 runs scored. Brennan Reidy is tops in RBIs with 11 and in stolen bases with four.

Joel Lamont tops the pitching staff in wins (3), while Cole Parusinni is first in strikeouts (18).

The Coyotes (7-9) return to action this weekend when they travel to Kamloops for four games against the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack.

OC’s next home action is April 24 and 25 when they host TRU, Calgary Dinos and the PBA Dawgs.

For Finlay, 17, the latest honour comes on the heels of cracking the NHL’s final Central Scouting rankings ahead of the 2015 NHL Draft in Florida this summer.

Finlay was dominant for the Vernon Vipers after they acquired him from the Penticton Vees after an early season trade.

In 55 games, Finlay posted 23 goals and 41 assists for 64 points. Finlay finished 13th in the BCHL’s overall scoring race.

Jost was equally impressive as a 16-yearold, playing a key role in the Penticton Vees finishing atop the BCHL’s Interior Division.

A season after shattering the Okanagan Rockets record book, Jost picked up 23 goals and 22 assists for 45 points in 44 games. On top of his success with the Vees, Jost became the first 16-year-old forward to play for Team Canada West at the World Junior A Challenge since St. Louis Blues forward Jayden Schwartz accomplished the feat. Jost also represented Canada at the World U17 Challenge in Sarnia, ON in December.

National Volunteer Week April 12–18th

Danny Tran has been volunteering at the Y since he was 8 years old and has been a member his whole life. At age 11, he continues to enjoy volunteering and giving back to his community.

It was Danny’s brother, Andy Tran, who first inspired him to start volunteering. “Before I used to participate in Movie Mania and Andy used to volunteer, and I decided I wanted to do what he was doing,” explained Danny who looks up to his older brother and saw how he was making an impact on local kids at the Y. Volunteering for Movie Mania and the Y’s Junior Leaders program has been a beneficial experience for Danny. He has met new friends, become more independent and has learned many skills.

In Junior Leaders the kids get to participate in planning and preparation for events, like YMCA Healthy Kids Day in June, and additional activities while learning to lead others.

“We get to try different things like trust exercises and different sports,” says Danny.

“And in Movie Mania, I make popcorn for the kids and watch them when they are swimming,” he explains. “I think it is important for kids to know how to swim. It’s useful if they want to come to one of these programs or swim at the Y or in the lake.”

Danny learned how to swim at the Y as a young child and now, through his volunteerism, he is becoming a confident young leader.

he would help improve my game to the best of his ability,” explains Jordan. “Having Bobby, Hannah and Emma involved in my university basketball is sure to be an awesome experience.”

“I believe that my strengths as a player are that I rebound aggressively both on offence and defence,”

says Jordan who has been preparing for what’s to come.

Proclaiming that university basketball can be very intimidating, the workaholic forward continues to work on her fundamentals, adding that she “loves the physical part of basketball, so I think I’ll be able to have some good

battles down in the post.”

“I run the floor well and post up strong down on the block,” she went on. “Next season I will bring both a positive attitude and good work ethic to the team, and I am looking forward to improving my skills with Coach Meadows.”

Soccer legend advocates for student athletes

Bob Lenarduzzi, former player and now president of the Vancouver Whitecaps, told a soldout crowd gathered to support student athletes that investing in young student athletes is an investment in Canada’s future.

Lenarduzzi was the featured speaker at the 10th annual Valley First UBC Okanagan Athletics Scholarship Breakfast Friday morning. He has been involved with the football club for more than three decades,

excelling as a player, coach, general manager, director of soccer operations, and now as club president.

In 2009, Lenarduzzi was instrumental in securing Vancouver’s Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise, and establishing the Whitecaps of today.

Lenarduzzi, who represented Canada 47 times as a player and qualified for the 1984 Olympics and 1986 FIFA World Cup Mexico, was inducted into the

Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame and Museum.

“Playing for Canada is an incredible opportunity,” said Lenarduzzi. “Anytime you can do that in any game is a proud moment, but pulling on your jersey for a World Cup game was such an honour. We established around the world that Canadians don’t just play hockey— we play soccer, too.”

Spending most of his career developing football in Canada, Lenarduzzi stressed the importance

of player development and support for young and upcoming players.

The Whitecaps has a residency program for young players, and Lenarduzzi says his team is recognized as one of the few that builds its roster with young developing players.

There are currently eight homegrown players on his team, the most in the MLS. Angela Brown, Valley First’s Assistant VicePresident, Marketing, Engagement and

Community Investment, used the breakfast to encourage audience members to “imagine what’s next,” and to imagine the future as the community continues to invest in and support student athletes at UBC’s Okanagan campus.

“When I think ‘what’s next’ it makes me reflect on the last 10 years of this event, the countless student athletes who have been able to follow their dreams because of what we as a group have committed to,” she said.

“But then it makes me look forward, gaze into that crystal ball, and really

think about the future. I encourage you to look at your own organizations and see how you could contribute to the ‘what’s next’ for the athletics scholarship program.”

Student athlete Manny Straith, who has captained the Heat men’s soccer team for the past three seasons, took a moment to thank the many sponsors who supported varsity athletics at UBC Okanagan. Support from the community allows players to focus on their academics, and then their sport, as all Heat players are expected to

excel in the classroom.

Straith works part-time at UBC’s Hangar Fitness Centre and says by 6 a.m. the gym is full of varsity athletes.

“When I see my fellow athletes working so hard for something they love, I know they can’t do it without your financial support,” Straith said.

“Support from you means that we don’t have to decide between working, or training and studying.

I’m standing here today because of the support from people like you.”

Indeed, UBC Okanagan’s Director of Athletics and Recreation Rob Johnson, told the audience that being a UBC student athlete requires a substantial commitment of time and effort throughout the entire academic year. UBC is dedicated to providing the financial support to these students and the Athletics Breakfast Scholarship Endowment is vital to this support.

UBC matches every dollar raised at the Valley First/UBC Okanagan Athletics Breakfast. Over the past 10 years, more than $500,000 has been raised for the Athletics Scholarship Endowment.

As a result, $12,800 in awards is available to student athletes this year.

In the spirit of the original Ex Nihilo sculpture by Frederick Hart, and renowned artist Igor Babailov, Body Language is a juried exhibition open to artists across Canada.

WORKSHOP 5 Rhythms Dance April 17 and 18 Canadian German Hall 1696 Cary Rd. The 5 Rhythms Dance practice is a movement meditation practice developed by Gabrielle Roth in the late 1970s.

Its philosophy is to bring the body into

movement in order to still the mind, access the knowledge of the body and dive deeply into the inner core of our being.

This is the first time a 5 Rhythms workshop is being offered in the Okanagan.

“Body, Breath and Beat” is the theme for this workshop, to be led by certified 5 Rhythms instructor Bettina Rothe, from Vancouver.

Participants will explore the mother language of our bodies which is rhythm. By paying attention to and deepening your breath in movement you will experience your aliveness and states of heightened awareness.

The two day workshop is divided into two sections. On Friday, April 17, 7 to 9:30 p.m., Rothe will offer an Introduction to 5 Rhythms Practice, which will introduce participants to the 5 Rhythms—flow, staccato, chaos, lyrical and stillness—and give pointers on how to enter

a movement meditation practice in an open and exploratory manner. No previous 5 Rhythms, dance or meditation experience is required.

On Saturday, April 18, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Rothe will lead participants through a somatic movement practice is recommended for this portion of the workshop.

Participants can register for both the Friday and Saturday sessions combined, or just attend either the Friday or Saturday session.

MUSICIAN Sam Weber April 18 Streaming Cafe 596 Leon Ave. Kelowna You can’t slow down a road dog. After the release of his debut LP last summer and extensive touring throughout the fall, Victoria native Sam Weber is heading back out on his first national tour.

Weber is known for his personal touch with fans, whether it be his notorious intimate performances, his recent performance video series giving fans a glimpse into his life, or his personal posts of love and appreciation via social media.

The second feature track from his latest album Shadows In The Road is a feel-good, upbeat tune called “Right Hearted.”

Weber directed the video for the song himself.

Gil passed away peacefully, surrounded by love and family on March 21, 2015. At 95 years old, Gil lived his entire life with grace, kindness, love and smiles like no other, in every aspect, a true gentleman.

He always put family first and the first person with a hug or a helping hand. He was the person that everyone should strive to be. PERRY, JAMES RONALD Jim Perry passed away suddenly in Kelowna, BC on April 8, 2015 at the age of 83 years.

He is survived by his son, Abe (Julie) Perry; two granddaughters; his ‘adopted’ family Ray Grexton and Mae Stenseth and their families; as well as numerous extended family. Predeceased by his brother Delbert; sister Yvonne; sister-in-law June; and ‘adopted’ sister Joyce.

Jim worked for many years with the liquor distribution branch, and enjoyed very much his life long friends and neighbours in Winfield, Kelowna, and Duncan. Although there will be no formal service, Jim’s life will be celebrated by his family and many friends, and his memory will live on always.

Obituaries CHAPPEL-WAGNER, SANDRA

February 23, 1923 - April 10, 2015 On April 10, 2015. Sandra Chappel of West Kelowna, formerly a school teacher of 33 years in the city of Edmonton and surrounding communities. She passed away peacefully at the age of 92.

Sandra is lovingly remembered by her daughter Debbie, and two sons Randy (Dianna) and Wayne (Judy). Also left to cherish her memory are six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Predeceased by her loving husband Hugo Wagner. Her parents, John and Domka Zytaruk of Smoky Lake, her brothers Bill, Steve, Mike, George, and her sisters Mary and Anne. Sandra is survived by her youngest sister, Lily Wiren of Kelowna.

Sandra was a wonderful artist, talented seamstress, avid gardener, a lover of nature. Teacher through and through she loved to share all of her talents from crocheting, perogy making, and baking delicious apple pies. Most of all Sandra was an amazing, caring friend. Who always left her door open to friends and family alike. She will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her during her long extrodinary life.

With deep sadness and love we said goodbye to Marilyn (Mary Evelyn) Finley on April 12, 2015.

At age 93 she leaves a legacy of love and laughter for her daughters Shannon Finley (Charles McNeil) of Lloydminster, SK., and Shelley (Al) Gambacort of Kelowna, six grandchildren, Tim (Louise), Paddy (Chris), Rachael, Brandon, Ben and Brad, and two great-grandchildren, Logan and Georgia.

Teacher, wife, mother, grandma and friend ~ she sang and whistled her way through a life of change and hard work, bringing her many talents and sense of humour to all of life’s ups and downs.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Cottonwoods Care Centre ~ Bridgeway and Dr. Jan McIntosh for the very loving care she received throughout the last years and moments of her life.

A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Thursday, April 16th at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC. Interment to take place in the Cranbrook Cemetery, 1212 2nd Street North, Cranbrook, BC on Saturday, April 18th at 10:00 am.

Our School Garden

At N.G.E. our school has an area called the Courtyard. For many years in the Courtyard, teachers have used it to teach their students about gardening skills. This is what Mrs. Kohlen, one of our Grade 2 teachers, had to say.

Genius Hour Mr. Owens grade 5’s and 6’s have been working on a project called “Genius Hour” that has been ongoing throughout the year. It takes place every Friday for one hour before the lunch break. Genius Hour is a time for students to be creative by expressing themselves and expanding their knowledge on things that they are interested in such as art, building, dance, sports or singing, Interview: Q: Nicole: “Why do you think Genius Hour is important?”

A: Mr. Owens: “1: It allows the students to learn about what they are passionate about.

Q1. How do feel when you see the garden with and without plants?

A1. I feel happy and calm when there is plants and when there aren’t any plant I feel like work needs to be done.

Q2. If you could plant anything what would it be?

A2. I would plant Roses, Hydrangeas and patio tomatoes.

Q3. Is it hard to keep the plants alive?

2: It lets the students take control of the learning process and how to demonstrate their learning.

SOAR As we all know the first drug is the worst drug, which means that the first drug you try can cause addiction. That is one of the first lessons.

The SOAR program for NGE teaches the grade six students here at North Glenmore Elementary all about making mature decisions when it comes to drugs. SOAR stand for Substance misuse, Options, Awareness and Resist. In this program the grade six students are taught the dangers and consequences of drugs. Grade six student Krysha Czenczek says that they were taught the dangers of drugs and how to make the right decisions. One of the biggest reasons people try drugs is peer pressure. The best way to avoid this is to not fall into peer pressure by having a supportive and responsible group of friends.

By Hannah, Halle and Alyssa This year in 2015 the spirit club decided to brighten up the school with a few fun days. If you are wondering what the spirit club is, it is a group of grade 5 students who come together to come up with activities that make our school a happier place to be.

The Amazing World of Technology

At NGE, we recently got new technology including IPads, computers, and laptops. The grade six classes got two carts, each filled with fifteen laptops. The grade five portables share the carts with the grade six classes. The grade four classes got one cart of fifteen laptops. They get to keep these upstairs for their use.

We use the IPads and laptops to make learning more enjoyable and it benefits our learning. The programs we use on our laptops are PowerPoints, Prezi, Lumosity, word documents, google and Weebly. So here are some questions we asked our vice-principal.

Q- Why did the school buy technology?

Q- Why did certain classes get certain amounts?

A- The grade sixes decided to build up the number of IPads instead of one Smartboard. Students have access to the technology instead of the teachers having the most access. The primary are slowly getting used to technology.

A-The school got the IPads about a year ago and the laptops at the start of this year.

Gators were invited to sleep in a little longer for one of spirit club’s classics pajama day. We had a lot of fun in our pajamas with a seasonal movie & a little treat!

A- The parent advisory council had a multi-year goal to help enhance students learning.

The spirit club decided to take it retro with a new touch to the school welcoming 80’s day. Gators brought funky colours and old styles back to life.

A- There expensive and iPads are meant for one person only so it’s hard to share with everyone

A- Treated with respect and appropriate use. The internet can be a very dangerous place and the teachers at NGE make sure that everything is good.

Response treatments for neck nerve compression As we start to get teased by the increasingly warm days, I know for myself, the project juices start flowing.

For all of you over 40 or with a history of neck problems, I have one piece of important advice: Don’t paint the ceiling, literally.

I’m not picking on this middle to older age group on purpose, but I see too many people in the clinic that have developed neck strain with associated nerve impingement from

The reason why it hits the older population more has a lot to do with the aging spine.

In between each of the vertebrae on both sides of your neck, there is a small exit hole (foramen) for the nerve to leave through

and proceed down into the arm.

When the size of this exit hole gets compromised in any way, the nerve traveling through it will get compressed and produce nerve impingement or what we medically term as foramenal compression.

So how does painting the ceiling and aging relate to this you may ask?

Well, compression on the nerve is generated by both predisposing and precipitating factors.

Degeneration would be one of those predisposing factors.

As we age, through a degenerating process, the vertebrae get closer together thus decreasing the size of the foramen where the nerve exits.

Second, the degenerative process also tends to include a deposit of bony spurs around the vertebrae and possibly around the edges of the foramen.

The general degenerative picture produces a scenario where there is very little room for error around the nerve as it travels its course through the spinal canal and foramen.

Precipitating factors such as painting a ceiling, working underneath a car, watching an air show,

talking on the phone too long, or reading on your side produce one common denominator, and that is sustained bending of the neck backward or sideways.

This also physically closes down the foramen on one side of the vertebrae or both.

When there is little room for error in a degenerating neck, it doesn’t take long for these neck kinking positions to start irritating the nerve, especially if you are not conditioned for the activity.

Once the nerve is irritated, swelling sets in compressing the nerve further and producing symptoms of referred pain into the shoulder or shoulder blade.

If compression persists, pain can refer down as far as your finger tips and even include numbness and tingling.

How do we first prevent this?

I think you are really setting yourself up for problems when you take on activities that put an older neck in awkward positions.

First, try to maintain a relatively chin tucked posture during activities, that is keeping your chin towards your Adam’s apple.

If you must reach up high with that paint brush, use a stool to get yourself to eye level with the task, or use an extended handle on the roller so you can stand back from the target area keeping your chin from lifting too high.

More obviously, take regular breaks. A good stretch during your break time would be to tuck your chin a few times to your Adam’s apple, holding for 10 seconds each time.

This will help take your neck regularly out of the bad zone to reduce the potential for swelling build up in and around the nerve.

When on the phone, use a cradle or head-set, or simply hold the phone up with your hand not your shoulder.

Try not to read on your side unless your pillow is supporting your head in a neutral position.

Lastly, if you are watching an event in the sky, or working under a car, sit back and relax a little, use a recliner or creeper.

What if prevention fails?

The first thing you can do is to try your best efforts with rest, ice and maybe even anti-inflammatories (with your doctor’s

recommendation).

If the problem is still at large, there are some very beneficial things your physiotherapist can do to help.

Through a combination of manual joint mobilization and soft tissue manipulation, some of the secondary joint and muscle stiffness can be relieved.

Often traction, either manual or mechanical, is an asset in readily improving the problem.

Traction is a technique that ever so slightly pulls the vertebrae apart with a goal of taking pressure off the nerve.

More importantly, the process of the foramen being slightly stretched open and relaxed creates a circulatory effect to help move swelling out of the region.

And lastly, if the pain and stiffness has been going on longer than eight weeks, IntraMuscular Stimulation can be a very effective form of treatment in releasing neck compression caused by neuropathically tightened muscles.

The prognosis of this type of injury will largely depend on how much bone growth exists around the foramen.

In a largely degenerative case, surgical removal of the bone may be an eventual result.

So if you think you might be at risk, avoid the potential headache and hire out the arduous task.

Volunteer makes immeasurable contribution to the fighting cancer cause Art Fletcher recently celebrated 25 years of volunteering for the Canadian Cancer Society.

“You could measure Art’s generosity by counting the number of hours, days, weeks and months that he has contributed—every day, 8:00am to 4:30pm, for 25 years,” said Randene Wejr, regional director for the Canadian Cancer Society in the Southern Interior Region.

“Just imagine the impact on the bottom line when a skilled, full-time employee is not accepting a pay cheque.

“But Art is much more than that. He’s authentic and thoughtful in his work with donors and staff. He is a genuinely incredible human being whom we could all learn a few chapters on life from.”

Fletcher, 83, first started volunteering for the Canadian Cancer Society after moving to Kelowna in 1988. The year prior, he retired from a career in education as a teacher, principal and superintendent of schools in Creston, Edgewater, Fort St. John, Grand Forks and Lillooet.

“Four months after moving to Kelowna, my wife Norma and I saw an appeal for funds to establish a mobile mammography van for B.C. and decided to donate,” he said.

“When I took the donation to the Canadian Cancer Society office, I noticed about a dozen people sitting around a table and was told they were writing receipts for mail-in donations. I mentioned that I could do that and was ‘hired’ for half a day a week.”

Once the staff discovered that not only was Fletcher willing to increase his volunteering hours, but that he also had computer experience at a time when many did not, his half-day a week rapidly became full-time.

He began volunteering for the Canadian Cancer Society “partly by chance” and because, like many Canadians, his family was affected by cancer.

“I had gone through surgery to have part of my thyroid gland removed because of cancer and Norma had surgery for

breast cancer a few years before moving here,” Fletcher recalled.

“Since then we both have had additional surgery to remove cancers.”

Even more devastating than their own experiences, however, was the loss of Art and Norma’s second son Ron to melanoma.

Ron had just completed a master’s degree in engineering when he was diagnosed. He passed away two years later, in 1988 at the age of 26.

Over the years, one of Fletcher’s daughters lost her husband to brain cancer and the other daughter’s husband has recently been successfully treated for breast cancer.

Although Fletcher finds it difficult to name one particular moment that he’s most proud of during his time volunteering with the Canadian Cancer Society, he does fondly remember the opening of the Southern Interior Rotary Lodge 16 years ago.

“The three organizations—BC Cancer Agency, Kelowna General Hospital and the Canadian Cancer Society—we all came together and raised over $5.7 million to build the lodge. A large portion of that funding came from Rotary, and I had the opportunity to work with those donors. It was pretty impressive to be there for the opening.”

Fletcher has also been a volunteer with Scouts Canada for 66 years and has, in the past, been involved as a volunteer with service clubs, his church, and other organizations.

Throughout it all, he and Norma raised two sons and two daughters, and now he enjoys time spent with eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

“There are times that my wife asks me when I’m going to retire

again,” he laughs. “But you know, I think she’s OK with it as long as I’m happy. I try to keep her happy, and she tries to keep me happy—that’s probably why we’ve been together for 57 years.”

Fletcher plans on continuing his volunteering with the Canadian Cancer Society

for what he says are “two basic reasons.

“I enjoy doing what I do and the people—staff and volunteers—that I work with,” he said.

“The other reason is that I have great satisfaction in knowing that I am contributing to the eventual eradication of cancer and also helping

those who are fighting cancer today.”

What would Fletcher say to other people considering volunteering for the Canadian Cancer Society?

“I’d say that I have seen up-close what the society does with funds raised and can see that much more could be done

with additional funds in the areas of research, education and support,” he said.

Randene Wejr also believes strongly in the impact volunteers can make in the cancer cause.

“Obviously, Art is unique. His 25-year career with the Canadian Cancer Society is an incredible

contribution, especially considering he embarked on it after retiring from his first career. (But) we’re so thankful for every bit of time that each of our 15,000 volunteers in B.C. and the Yukon contributes to the cause.

We couldn’t accomplish what we do without them,” Weir said.
