Freedom Farm grows a wide range of field and greenhouse vegetables. Known for their heirloom tomato varieties, Calvin notes that “the one big thing people mention is the flavour of our cherry tomatoes.” He attributes this flavour advantage to the soil. It’s micronutrient rich, and the Woroniak’s work at making it even richer, naturally – going so far as to pump thousands of litres of ocean water onto the growing fields. The result: delicious veggies!

In 2008, after years of farming in Saskatchewan, Calvin and Deanna Woroniak pulled up stakes and headed west to 90 acres in “North Courtenay.” Here, with the help of daughter Tammy, and sons Curtis and Raymond, the Woroniak’s launched Freedom Farm. The family now has five grandchildren learning to tell the difference between pulling weeds and pulling plants.

Attention to soil also helps the farms greenhouse seedlings get a head start – in the Freedom Farm fields, but also in customers’ gardens. What began as a sideline – selling excess starts – “is now a big part of our spring business.”

In 2008, after years of farming in Saskatchewan, Calvin and Deanna Woroniak pulled up stakes and headed west to 90 acres in “North Courtenay.” Here, with the help of daughter Tammy, and sons Curtis and Raymond, the Woroniak’s launched Freedom Farm. The family now has five grandchildren learning to tell the difference between pulling weeds and pulling plants.

Attention to soil also helps the farms greenhouse seedlings get a head start – in the Freedom Farm fields, but also in customers’ gardens. What began as a sideline – selling excess starts – “is now a big part of our spring business.”
