April 9, 1917 is the day that Canada became a nation, says Vern Schneider, a Legion member and veteran of Lord Strathcona's Horse Armed Regiment.

On that date, tens of thousands of Canadians emerged from the trenches and stormed the well-fortified German positions on Vimy Ridge near Arras in France. Previous French and British attempts to re-take the ridge resulted in failure and horrific loss. The Canadians were given the task in 1917, and fought for the first time as a unified Canadian force under a Canadian general – and they succeeded. The Vimy Foundation is working to make the 100th anniversary an international commemoration with events across Canada and in the north of France. “I've been taking my horse out and riding quite a bit,” said Campbell, 25.

“Going through at a slower pace and being up a little higher, I started to notice everything from bottles and cans, to things like hot dog packages, cigarette butts and so much other trash.

“Then I realized that it wasn't just along the main trails, it is in every nook and cranny.”

Campbell turned her dismay into action with an April 11 and April 12 weekend event she's dubbed “Early Earth day in the Pondy – Volunteer Clean Up & BBQ.” “I started to carry bags and pick up on my own,” she explained.

The Junior Dragons Den competition set for May 1 at the Charles Bailey Theatre will be breathing some fire into entrepreneurial ideas put together by students, and the audience get to help pick the best.

John Reed from Greater Trail Community Futures says the audience has a big voice when it comes to voting for their favourites in the junior and senior categories.

“The audience vote counts for 20 per cent of the final vote,” he said. “It is pretty substantial.

They vote with an electronic clicker, so it's high tech stuff.”

While the audience has the usual amount of family and friends seated to watch the show, Reed says there is extra incentive for members of the community to see what students from the Kootenays have been dreaming up.

“It is tons of fun,” he said. “These students get a chance to win a significant amount of money and the audience learns some new things. It is also interesting to see the students outside of a school setting and in a professional presentation setting.”

All audience members will also be entered into a draw to win two round trip tickets to either Vancouver or Kelowna on Pacific Coastal Airlines, one of the sponsors of the event.

Spectators will also get to see their vote count soon after they cast it. The winners of the entrepreneurial competition will be announced the same night as the presentations after a short break.

“It is very engaging and invariably, people will come to watch their favourites,” said Reed. “We will announce the winner that night after a short recess where the judges convene and tabulate the audience votes. Then we get to hand out the big checks to the winners. They are about three-anda-half feet by eight feet. A little too big to deposit at the bank.”

This year's competition hasn't happened yet, but plans for next year's competition are already in the works and reps from both Cranbrook and Revelstoke Community Futures offices will be in the audience to get a glimpse of what kind of show could be coming to their areas next spring.

“We are working on moving the competition throughout the Columbia Basin for next year,” said Reed. “We have representatives in Cranbrook and in Revelstoke that are going to be in the audience participating (this year).”

Trail chamber elects new board members

The Trail and District Chamber of Commerce has elected four new members to the board.

New members Glen Haley from DandiLion Wellness Centre, Ben De Jager from the Columbia Gardens Vineyard and Winery and Rob and Gina Ironmonger from Keystone Appraisals were nominated, elected and sworn in at Tuesday night's annual general meeting (AGM).

Newly named president of the chamber board, Naomi McKimmie with the United Way Trail office, says she is happy to see some new faces at the table.

“I welcome them to the board,” she said. “I told them this at our meeting, but I look forward to working with them.”

Lisa Pasin, the City of Trail representative with the chamber, says she is looking forward to the next year of intense community involvement.

“It seems like it is a really enthusiastic group,” she said.

“They really want to make a difference. It is a volunteer position and a lot of time and effort comes with volunteering for this board.”

The AGM itself, according to Pasin, went smoothly and she is happy to see that so many people came and pledged to volunteer their time.

“Attendance was great. I would estimate that there were around 40 people there,” she said, adding that finding volunteers to give so many hours of their time can be difficult.

“I find that (recruiting volunteers) isn't just (difficult) with the chamber. It is hard with any organization that is volunteer-based.

“It gets harder as life gets busier, but we have found the volunteer base that will do the work that needs to get done and assist the community.

I expect the next year to go very well.”

Campbell created the event on Facebook and says word spread quickly, and she’s hoping for a large turnout of people in her age group.

“I kind of look at it, that it’s my age group and generation that has made a lot of the mess, especially the party mess in the bush” she said. “We feel privileged that we grew up in this area because instead of going to nightclubs, we were sitting around campfires.

“This is a special part of the West Kootenay. We need to show it some respect and it’s important to carry that respect to the younger generations.”

While the clean up kicks off

Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m., Campbell said volunteers will be welcomed throughout the day and for any length of time.

Garbage bags and gloves will be available in three marked locations: near the cattle guard at Buckley campground; Shotgun (Lookout) Point; and the Salmo River bridge.

“We’ve made up early Earth Day signs to mark where the box of gloves and bags will be,” she said. “People can come out for whatever time schedule works for them and spend minutes or hours.”

She says volunteers can follow the roadway to more open areas, but requests they get out of their vehicles, walk into the bush and start picking up from there.

secure the amassed waste before bringing it to the landfill for proper disposal the following day.

She plans to use money garnered from recycling bottles and cans to pay the tipping fees.

Anything left over, she says is going to a local charity such as the BCSPCA or a local youth group.

“I grew up in a family that worked in B.C. parks and the logging industry,” she said. “I was educated about the environment my whole life and have seen the Pend D’Oreille get really bad over the last 12 years.

“Nobody thinks of this as our mother earth, it’s just the ground that we walk on.”

Fuel oil spill from freighter triggers cleanup

An apparent spill of bunker fuel oil believed to have leaked from a grain freighter in English Bay has triggered a cleanup operation, as well as questions about the effectiveness of the emergency response.

Port Metro Vancouver spokesman John Parker-Jervis said the port received reports around 5 p.m.

Wednesday of oil in the water and dispatched a boat that confirmed it.

But there was no immediate move to have the Western Canada Marine Response Corp.

(WCMRA) deploy booms to contain the spilled fuel.

That didn’t happen until sometime later Wednesday evening, according to ParkerJervis.

“It initially was deemed unrecoverable because it was

quite a light sheen,” Parker-Jervis said.

“But as the evening progressed they found heavier concentrations where it began to be deemed as something that could be recovered so booms were put in place and skimmer vessels of Western Canada Marine Response Corp. began their operations.”

He said Coast Guard responders were on scene with the port from the outset and made the call to bring in WCMRA. Five WCMRA skimmer boats are on the bay Thursday morning working to recover the oil.

The suspected but unconfirmed source of the oil is the grain freighter Marathassa.

Parker-Jervis said there’s a large concentration of oil around the vessel that has been boomed off.

posted on social media show slicks in the water extending to shore.

There’s no indication yet of the size of the spill nor is it clear what harm might be done to sea life.

The City of Vancouver issued warnings early Thursday that the spilled fuel oil is toxic and people on the water or beaches should avoid it.

Unlike oil tankers that carry crude oil from the Trans Mountain pipeline in Burnaby for export, every freighter in the harbour carries bunker oil as fuel.

Opponents of Kinder Morgan’s pipeline expansion plan, which would nearly triple Trans Mountain capacity and send out hundreds of extra oil tankers a year carrying oil sands bitumen, called the English Bay incident a reminder of a potential future nightmare scenario.

“It may actually be lucky that this is only bunker fuel and not bitumen,” anti-tanker activist Ben West said.

“If this were a spill of tar sands oil and this much time had passed without it being contained it likely would be game over for any kind of clean up.”

Fred Moxley, former commander of the closed Kitsilano Coast Guard station, told CKNW the initial response would have been faster and more effective had the federal government not shut the base down.

The two worst spills to foul southern B.C. shorelines did not come from oil tankers or an anchored freighter, but smaller vessels that ran into trouble at sea.

The fuel barge Nestucca was punctured by the tug towing it in 1988 and spilled 5,500 barrels of bunker fuel oil off Washington’s west coast. Tens of thousands of oiled sea birds died from northern Oregon to Vancouver

Island.

And In 1991, the fish processor Tenyo Maru sank in Juan de Fuca Strait with 14,000 barrels of various oils aboard after it collided with a bulk carrier.

Oil fouled shores from western Vancouver Island to Oregon.

“Neither of those were under B.C. rules,” said energy consultant John Hunter.

“Those were U.S. vessels that weren’t under our control or regulations.”

He said the bunker C oil that is typically carried as fuel by everything from freighter s to cruise ships is thick, viscous and hard to clean up.

“It’s the bottom of the barrel when you refine crude,” Hunter said. “It’s full of metals, it’s full of sulphur – it’s awful stuff.”

He said it’s too early to say how the oil escaped.

“It may have been fuel or it may have just been dirty bilges that had fuel in it.”

Concerns over latest derailment

A derailment of two grain cars on a train full of tanker cars carrying dangerous goods in downtown Revelstoke last week has sparked worries of what could have been.

“Obviously there is a concern,” said Mayor Mark McKee. “It was just lentils but take lentils out of the picture and put in propane and it becomes a different story.”

The CP Rail train derailed across the street from the Visitor Information Centre on Thursday, Apr. 2, at about 2 p.m.

George Hopkins witnessed the train derailment. A retired railroader, he and his son were watching the train slowly pass by when they heard a bang and it jumped the track. They both rushed to contact CP Rail.

Lorraine Beruschi and Marie-Eve Bruchig, who work in the visitor centre, said they didn’t hear anything, but right away people came rushing in to say what happened.

The derailed cars were carrying a grain of some sort. They were preceded and followed by a long line of black containers cars that generally carry oil, gases or dangerous goods.

One car was lying on its side; one set of wheels was completely detached from the car and remained on the tracks with its load of grains spilled. It had rammed into the car in front of it before flipping onto its side. The car behind it was only partially jerked from the tracks.

Numerous CP Rail personnel were on scene. Revelstoke RCMP and Fire & Rescue Services also attended the incident.

Transportation Safety Board spokesperson Chris Krepski said they were not deploying to the scene but would be monitoring the situation. When asked why the TSB was not investigating a derailment within city limits, Krepski said the TSB would re-consider if there were any new developments.

Many people gathered on Victoria Road to watch the scene unfold. A few retired railroaders remarked it had been many years since a train derailed right downtown. Many people speculated what could have happened if one of the tanker cars came off the tracks.

It was the second derailment within city limits in the past year. A train derailed in the Big Eddy last September. While local emergency personnel weren’t notified of the last derailment, this time it couldn’t be hidden.

CP Rail crews could be seen replacing the section of tracks following the derailment.

Salem Woodrow, a spokesperson for CP Rail said this was standard procedure following an incident.

“Typically when there is an incident like this, there could be some track damage,” she said. “If there is track damage, we will replace a section of the rail and make those repairs before we open it to traffic.”

The cause of the derailment was still under investigation as of press time.

Calgary mayor blasts premier over election THE CANADIAN PRESS Calgary’s mayor is criticizing Alberta Premier Jim Prentice for spending millions to hold an early provincial election after refusing to restore funding for more child death investigations.

“I don’t think I would’ve called an election now,” Naheed Nenshi said Wednesday.

“I think that if we’re in a world where it’s difficult to find $200,000 to investigate the deaths of children in care to then find $30 million to run an election, it’s a tough argument for me to make if I were in that shoe.”

Prentice announced the May 5 vote on Tuesday - a year before required under provincial law - saying his plan to wean the province from its dependence on oil revenues demands an endorsement from the people.

Last month’s budget contained a host of tax hikes and austerity measures as the province wrestles with billions of dollars in lost revenue due to the steep plunge in oil prices over the last six months.

In February, Progressive Conservatives on the all-party legislative offices committee blocked the restoration of $275,000 in funding for the child and youth advocate for more investigations into the deaths of children in government care.

Nenshi noted that the 70 of 87 legislature seats the Tories held at dissolution was a “pretty good mandate.”

He said he’s concerned the election could see historically low voter turnout and called on Calgarians to get engaged over the next four weeks.

“What I’m hearing from Calgarians over and over again is they’re not happy about his election, they’re not happy about spending up to $30 million on the election,” he said.

“But they are not convinced that there are really good options and choices for them.”

Minister takes trip down lousy highways THE CANADIAN PRESS REGINA Saskatchewan Highways Minister Nancy Heppner has taken a drive down a couple of rural highways and agrees with residents that they’re pretty bad.

Heppner says her road trip down Highways 322 and 220 was inspired by complaints and photos that had been shared on social media.

She says she’ll be making repairs to the roads a government priority, and says crews will be relocated from other projects in central Saskatchewan to at least level the highways.

However, she cautions that permanent repairs will have to wait until the roads dry out completely.

People who live in the area have called the repair jobs done every year a “BandAid fix,” saying the roads really need to be rebuilt entirely.

Heppner says the conditions are caused by a combination of factors - heavy truck traffic combined with wet conditions.

Both highways are also part of the 5,000 kilometres of thin membrane system or TMS roads in the province. The minister says it would cost $4.5 billion to replace them all and that is not feasible this budget.

“We can look at these things into the long term but for this year our concern is to make sure that it’s drivable and like I

said, have the maintenance done once the roads dry out.”

People who live in the area say the pavement has crumbled to the point where it’s impassable. The highways have been closed to all but local traffic.

“I pretty much have to drive in the ditch. I have to go completely around the broken pavement,” says Marina Ahrendt.

Mixed messages over PM’s makeup bill THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA - The prime minister might have had his makeup done alongside Sen. Mike Duffy in 2010 on one of their many appearances together, but a government source says the taxpayer didn’t pick up the tab for that type of service.

Still, one month earlier, taxpayers did foot the bill for Stephen Harper’s makeup artist to travel overseas for the 65th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands.

The fact that Harper and Duffy employed the services of the same makeup artist surfaced in court earlier this week.

Duffy, a former Conservative, is facing 31 charges of fraud, breach of trust and bribery.

Some of those charges involve allegedly illegal Senate contracts, including one given to local makeup artist Jacqueline Lambert.

Defence lawyer Donald Bayne said Tuesday that Duffy had his makeup done for a G8/G20 national youth caucus event in 2010, and that Harper received the same service that day.

“The $300 (contract) paid not only Sen. Duffy’s perfectly standard makeup for television - it’s always done - but Ms. Lambert made up the prime minister of Canada,” Bayne said in court.

“There’s no way the G8 conference was not validly related to Sen. Duffy’s public business.”

That event, which took place on Parliament Hill, featured Harper and Duffy in conversation on the same stage, surrounded by students whose questions had been vetted in advance. A photo from the event showing the pair having a discussion on stage, was entered into evidence Thursday at Duffy’s trial.

As the trial progresses, the defence is expected to emphasize that Duffy was called upon frequently by the Prime Minister’s Office to participate in events.

A government source, not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and so speaking on condition of anonymity, refused to comment on a matter before the court, but did say that “these services are not paid for by taxpayers.”

In fact, the taxpayer has picked up bills in the past for another Harper stylist, and around the

same time period. Michelle Muntean travelled around the world with Harper, applying makeup, styling hair, selecting clothing and trimming nails.

In 2007, Harper’s office told The Canadian Press Muntean’s expenses were covered by the Conservative party.

But the Public Accounts of Canada, the government’s annual spending report, tell a different story: the Department of Foreign Affairs paid her travel expenses, including flights, meals and accommodation. The records for 2009-2010, for example, show she travelled with Harper on 13 different trips.

In May 2010, the records show that she accompanied Harper to the Netherlands.

The NDP once tabled an official question in the House of Commons on who paid Muntean’s salary, and was told that no such contract existed.

Harper’s team said the party paid for her salary.

Duffy’s payment of Lambert occurred through an unusual $65,000 master contract that he had arranged with Gerald Donohue, a former broadcasting friend. Through that umbrella fund, Donohue’s company paid out other service providers, including Lambert.

The Crown has alleged Duffy set up that system so that Senate finance officials could not see how he was spending taxpayer money. But Bayne has argued that Duffy is guilty of nothing more than administrative process irregularities.

Caring for neighbours strengthens region

I

have always followed current events and exercised my right to vote but I never aspired to be a politician. Last fall I decided that elected office may be a new way to pitch in and give back to the community and region I love - so I ran and was fortunate to be supported and elected as a Fruitvale Councillor.

It has been a whirlwind five months since the election learning regular council business, taking on the portfolios of; Personnel, Finance, membership in the Lower Columbia Community Development Team Society (LCCDTS), also the Tourism subcommittee of the LCCDTS, and the RDKB managed Columbia Basin Trust Community Initiatives Program. Intersperse these regular duties with two days of Strategic Planning for Fruitvale, attendance at the Local Government Leadership Academy in Kimberley in January, Economic Development 101 in Rossland in March, and upcoming in

April, the Association of Kootenay Boundary Local Government meetings in Nakusp and it all adds up to a busy schedule and a challenging learning curve.

In the fall municipal elections, a common refrain we heard from nearly every candidate throughout our communities was the need for collaboration with neighbours.

I think we politicians could learn a lot about collaboration from the mostly local people that spoke at the Economic Development 101 day in Rossland. Every speaker, no matter which organization they represented, was passionate and engaged in what they are doing to build the economy in our region.

They also demonstrated by their various successes what can be accomplished by working together for the region rather than working in isolation and/or against each other.

I am hopeful that in this term all of our communities in Lower Columbia can reach out beyond their boundaries and work

Community Comment together for the benefit of the whole region, rather than working in isolation and not worrying if something we do is not positive for neighbouring communities. In my opinion there are some uncomfortable questions we need to ask ourselves; • Are we getting the best health care for our region by fighting with our neighbours over the location of the regional hospital?

• Are we getting the best and most reliable air transportation for our region by splitting our resources between two airports?

• Are we getting the best education for our children when 19 years after

the amalgamation of the Castlegar and Trail School Districts some of the trustee leaders are still fighting parochial battles?

It appears to me that with some of these big picture items there has been little or no dialogue between communities.

I don’t know the answers but I do believe as political leaders in our region we need to open our minds and think outside the box in order to do the best we can for our region.

• Wouldn’t it be great if no one had to go to Kelowna or Vancouver for medical services?

• Wouldn’t it be great if we had one airport that we could rely on to get us in and out of town?

• Wouldn’t it be great if we had the strongest K - post secondary education in the province?

These issues and others won’t be resolved overnight and some issues may never be resolved to everyone’s satisfaction.

Collaboration doesn’t happen with only one party interested; I think

we all need to listen to our neighbours, be open to their viewpoints, and work things out with honesty and integrity.

Rebuilding trust with each other will take time and small steps. It will go a long way to restoring trust between communities if when making decisions Councils ask themselves, “How will this impact our neighbours? Should we consult with them? How can this be turned into a win-win?”

Showing this kind of care for our neighbours will strengthen our region to the benefit of everyone.

Whether the suspended senator purportedly representing P.E.I. is found guilty or absolved in the process, regardless, somebody’s going to come out looking bad. So the entertainment factor will be there. And so will the prospect of turning up some of the rot in Ottawa.

Many have speculated what effect this spectacle could have on the Conservatives’ chances of re-election in the fall. Never underestimate a fiasco. Recall the federal Liberals’ fate after the sponsorship scandal and resulting Gomery inquiry. They lost favour – and that at a time when the economy was still doing well.

For better or worse, many Canadian voters cast votes out

of a sense of revenge as opposed to a carefully considered choice about which party offers the best expertise in running the country.

This trial and outcome can’t help but cast a light on Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his means of picking Senate members.

Offering patronage positions in a political body that’s supposed to refrain from a partisan approach and demanding the lucky recipients be loyal to his party’s agenda is shaping up to give some blowback in this trial. It might be hard to get out of the way.

If there is such a thing as karma, a good illustration is in the wind.

Duffy has proclaimed his innocence – no surprise – and in doing so shows no hesitation from biting the hand that fed him. Being an obedient Conservative was fine while it lasted, but he soon alleged blame for his woes belonged to top figures in the party.

So much for taking a bullet for the team – it’s down to survival mode now.

At any rate, like anyone facing charges, Duffy is innocent until proven otherwise.

And there’s every reason to believe that new transportation options will save people money. Some reports suggest that in crowded cities such as San Francisco and Los Angeles, using Uber for all transportation is less expensive than car ownership. Uber is also less costly than taxis – at least some of the time. Uber itself estimates that its lowest-cost service is 30 per cent less expensive than taxi service.

The transportation system of tomorrow is likely to be a dynamic, personalized, person-to-person (or possibly robocar-to-person) system that will achieve many of the goals espoused by supporters of mass transit.

It will probably reduce car ownership and increase ridesharing, relieving traffic congestion and air pollution. And it could lead to either underestimations of future transit ridership or over-estimation. It could also upset the cost-model of transit. Yet this burgeoning new world is barely considered or discussed in the Mayor’s Council plan.

In sticking with primarily traditional models of transit planning, an approach that favours fixed-routes, stationto-station movement – with time-consuming transfers from buses, to trains, to boats – the Vancouver Mayor’s Council does not seem to consider that future personalized transport modes may make these systems obsolete and make their investments ill-considered.

Royal couple celebrates anniversary

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LONDON — The heir to the British throne and his consort, Camilla, are celebrating 10 years of marriage — a decade in

which Camilla’s public image has gone from aristocratic homewrecker to admired addition to the royal family.

Graham Frances Kenyon Sept. 1, 1937 - April 7, 2015 Graham passed away at Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital in Trail, B.C. after a short but courageous battle against cancer. He was born in Leicester, England, where he earned his degree in mechanical engineering. Due to a bike accident, he lost vision in his right eye. While in hospital, he met and later married Jill Eden.

They immigrated to Canada in 1961 and settled in Rossland. Graham began a long and rewarding career with Cominco/Teck Metals Ltd. advancing through the company to become the environmental health manager for Trail Operations until his retirement in 1998.

He traveled to New Zealand in 1968 on a Rotary Group Study Exchange, which he said had a huge influence on his life. He became passionate about the environment as was evidenced by his enormous contributions to his employer and his community.

His involvement with the Kootenay Mountaineering Club from the early ‘60s led Graham to serve as secretary of the Trail Rod and Gun Club, president of the Trail Wildlife Association, director/vice president and then president of B.C. Wildlife Federation, director of West Kootenay Outdoorsmen and energy chair and conservation ethics manager of BCWF on the Seven Mile and Revelstoke Dam projects.

He was a founding chair of the BC Conservation Foundation, member of the BC Environmental Appeal Board, conservation chair of Kootenay Mountaineering which initiated a campaign to establish Valhalla Park. He also worked on a number of campaigns and conservation of parks and wilderness and forest policies as well as coal strip-mining legislation and the establishment of the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area. He was also director of the Canadian Wildlife Federation, member and chair of the Royal Roads University Environmental Advisory Committee and served on the Trail Lead Task Force/ Trail Health and Environment Committee.

He chaired the steering committee for the Rossland Strategic Sustainability Plan, was a director of Community Futures, the Lower Columbia Community Development Team and the Fort Shepherd Land Conservancy Area, which he helped to establish.

In his spare time, he loved hiking in the mountains, cycling, touring, backpacking and traveling through many parts of the world. As a runner, he won numerous medals but was most proud of achieving a time of 2:45 hours in a marathon. He also enjoyed his dogs, the Nooners Jogging Club, keeping abreast of local politics, and was an incredible writer, penning a number of non-fiction magazine articles and writing letters to the local newspaper from “the Mountain Kingdom.”

Graham is survived by his wife, Jill; children Heather (Jim) Lawson of Port Alberni and Andrew (Tina) of Rossland; and brothers Robert and David of England.

He was predeceased by his parents, Margaret and Frank.

They married on April 9, 2005, in a modest town-hall ceremony lacking the pageantry of Charles’ 1981 wedding to Princess Diana — an extravaganza watched by millions around the world. In 2005, many Britons were cool to a woman some blamed for the failure of Charles and Diana’s marriage. But since then Camilla’s charity work and downto-earth humourhave made her a popular figure.

A look at the woman who may be queen: Charles met Camilla Shand in the early 1970s, and the pair bonded over a shared sense of humourand love of rural life. But he sailed off with the Royal Navy without cementing their relationship; in his absence she married Andrew Parker Bowles.

Charles went on to marry 20-yearold Diana Spencer, a union whose fairytale image could not sur-

vive real life.

Within a few years, Charles had resumed his relationship with Camilla. “There were three of us in that marriage,” Diana said later — although she acknowledged affairs of her own.

Many Britons took Diana’s view, vilifying Camilla as a royal home-wrecker. Charles and Diana separated in 1992 and divorced in 1996.

Camilla’s first marriage also ended in divorce. After Diana’s death in a 1997 car crash, Charles and Camilla cautiously began making their relationship public. Their first public appearance together came in 1999, the first public kiss in 2001.

Finally a wedding date was set — April 8, 2005.

But there was one more delay. The wedding was postponed for a day so it would not conflict with the funeral of Pope John Paul II. Britain had never seen a royal wedding like it: the simple civil marriage of two 50-something divorcees.

A lover of dogs, horses, gardening and the British countryside, she has a hearty laugh and a self-deprecating streak, and is a busy charity campaigner for causes including literacy and osteoporosis, which afflicted both her mother and her grandmother.

Royal author Penny Junor said Camilla had never been drawn to the perks and pomp of royal life.

“She’s never had any ambition for herself,” Junor said. “She didn’t want to be a princess or a duchess.

She just happened to love a man who was the Prince of Wales, and look at the fuss that caused.”

Actor remembered for role in ‘L.A. Law’ THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES - Richard Dysart, a veteran stage and screen actor who played senior partner Leland McKenzie in the long-running TV courtroom drama “L.A. Law,” has died after a long illness. He was 86.

Dysart died Sunday at his home in Santa Monica, California, according to his daughterin-law Jeannine Jacobi.

He created the Broadway role of the Coach in “That Championship Season,” for which he won a Drama Desk Award in 1972, and his many film appearances included Hal Ashby’s “Being There,” Clint Eastwood’s “Pale Rider” and John Carpenter’s “The Thing.”

But his most memorable role was likely that of head man in the firm of McKenzie, Brackman, Chaney and Kuzak in NBC’s 19861994 series.

It was produced by Steven Bochco, who, having scored a hit with the police series “Hill Street Blues,” was casting another multicharacter series that would portray the life in a toney Los Angeles law office.

“I was trying to make it by doing films and TV movies,” Dysart said in an Associated Press interview in 1988. Then he heard about the prospective “L.A. Law” project, and called his agent.

“After I read the script,” he recalled, “I called him and said I wanted to talk to Steven Bochco. My agent said, ‘That’s funny, he wants to talk to you.”’

Arts council wants to keep Rusty in Rossland

Submitted ROSSLAND – Rusty the Horse has been earning his oats in downtown Rossland for the past year. As a favourite backdrop for photos, Rusty has brought many smiles to the faces of locals and visitors alike.

But Rossland isn’t Rusty’s forever home and the Rossland Council for Arts and Culture hopes to change that. Along with a group of local supporters RCAC are spearheading a fundraising initiative to purchase Rusty and let him live out his days as part of Columbia Avenue’s public sculptures.

RCAC brought Rusty to Rossland last year as part of the Regional Sculpturewalk Program coordinated by Castlegar Sculpturewalk.

Through the regional program, communities and businesses can lease a sculpture for a year.

“With our history of horse racing on the main street, and the use of horses on the wagon roads and the Dewdney Trail, Rusty was a natural choice for our Sculpturewalk installation,” explains Renate Fleming from RCAC. Well, Rusty’s year is almost and up and, effective April

By Times Staff It was icing on the cake following a great hockey season for Trail’s Jake Lucchini.

The Smoke Eater captain was named to the BCHL’s Second All Star Team on Thursday.

It’s just another feather in the cap of the 19-year-old Trail native.

Lucchini was named one of the finalists for the BCHL Most Valuable Player.

He also earned a hockey scholarship to Michigan Tech University just before Christmas.

He led the Smokies in scoring 35 goals and 83 points.

Lucchini, who played his entire minor hockey in the Greater Trail system and three seasons with the Smokies.

Eleven different BCHL teams are represented on the league’s first and second teams as well as the All-Rookie Team.

The first team features forwards Corey Mackin and rookie Brett Supinski from Coquitlam and Victoria’s Dane Gibson. Andrew Farny of Salmon Arm and Kurt Gosselin were named to the blueline crews and Penticton goaltender Hunter Miska.

Joining Lucchini on the Second All Star Team are forwards Liam Blackburn of West Kelowna and Jacob Pritchard of Powell River. The defence features Nanaimo’s star rookie Yanni Kaldis and Gabe Bast of Penticton. Guillaume Decelles of Nanaimo was picked as the goaltender.

The All Rookie Team features Kaldis and Supinski along with goaltender Aidan Pelino of Chilliwack, defencemen Dante Fabbro of Penticton and forwards picked Liam Finlay of Vernon and Tyson Jost of Penticton.

Friday brings Game 1 of the Fred Page Cup BCHL Finals and sees the top-two teams from the regular season meet up for the right to advance to the Crescent Point Energy Western Canada Cup. The Penticton Vees have home-ice advantage by virtue of the fact they are the Ron Boileau Memorial Trophy winners as they finished first place overall in the regular season after a 44-9-32 record for 93 points. Nanaimo went 37-16-0-5 for 79 points to claim the Island Division regular season crown. They also had the second-best goal differential in the league at +68. Penticton was +101 in that department but their 216 goals for the campaign were second to Nanaimo’s 235.

On the heels of their Major League brethren, the Little Leaguers hit the diamond this weekend for the start of baseball season.

Canada’s Trail & District Churches mission against ISIL highlights “What Are You Looking For?” moral quandary

I

nitially, I was convinced that the war against ISIS could be morally justified. Since ISIS is a malevolent force from which neither Iraq nor Syria are able to protect their populations, the international community has a responsibility to intervene; on this point, there does seem to be, as Foreign Affairs Minister Rob Nicholson frames it, “moral clarity”. Beyond that, the moral waters get muddy.

Catholic “just war” theory and the United Nations Responsibility to Protect (R2P) principle raise questions about the outcome of this war that we ignore at our peril.

While both R2P and the just war criterion louise of “just cause” support the defense of populations, the goal Everyday Theology to “degrade and contain” ISIS, as Defense Minister Jason Kenny describes it, may not be sufficient to justify successive waves of bombing.

Military intervention is one tool in the R2P toolbox. Non-coercive tools are equally, if not, more important. In a video on the UN website, Special Advisor on R2P Jennifer Welsh affirms the important role of development tools in building inclusive and resilient societies that can withstand a political crisis before it spirals into violence.

According to just war theory, the “prospect of success” and “proportionality” are key aspects in evaluating the moral legitimacy of any war. The prospect of success in the fight against ISIS should look beyond the military objective of “degrade and contain.” It should also consider whether it is realistically possible to foster a robust society once the war is ended.

Proportionality looks at the harms resulting from military intervention and stipulates that a war should not create more evils than those it seeks to eliminate.

These principles, together with the hard lessons learned in Iraq, and the present day realities in Syria form the basis for a rigorous evaluation of the moral clarity of this war.

The ongoing civil war in Syria, which has displaced 11 million people and killed at least 220,000, certainly raises red flags about the prudence of airstrikes. Some of the rebel groups fighting the Assad dictatorship are as savage as ISIS, and the Assad regime itself is known for its ruthlessness.

In his analysis on Canada’s mission for CBC, Brian Stewart argues that Canadian airstrikes in Syria could make an already chaotic situation even more deadly for civilians, embolden the Assad dictatorship, and lead to more sectarian fighting. Nor, he points out, is the elimination of ISIS a sure thing.

In 2003, when George W. Bush expanded the objectives for the war in Iraq to include humanitarian concerns, he projected a rosy future; the life of the average Iraqi citizen would dramatically improve with economic development, political reform and reconciliation; peace would reign supreme as old hatreds melted away. None of this happened.

The American-led war against Iraq resulted in economic and political instability, and flamed the fires of sectarian violence. Groups like ISIS rose from the ashes.

“What are you looking for?” It seems like a straight enough question. But our lives are changed in the very way we choose to answer.

“What are you looking for?” It is the opening question in John’s Gospel, the key to all that follows. Beginning with the Wedding at Cana, everybody is looking for something. Nicodemus is looking for answers, the woman at the well is looking for water (and she has been looking for a spouse), the man born blind is looking for sight. Each, in turn, thinks they know what they are looking for, but non are completely satisfied until they come to know the one whom they are looking for.

Jesus is also telling everyone who he is. “I am the Light of the World”, “I am the Bread of Life”, “I am the Good Shepherd”, “I am the Resurrection”, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life”, “I am the Vine”. In the Garden of Gethsemane he even tells the cohort that: “I am he”. A perfectly normal thing to say, except for their reaction: they step back and bow down as if to worship.

John’s Gospel is clear, “Jesus is the one we are looking for.”

John’s Gospel also deals with our failure to understand. In one particular incident some Greek speaking Jews approach Philip and tell him, “We want to see Jesus”. They have answered the opening question. But when the request is made to Jesus, Jesus begins to speak about his Passion and Death. “Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single grain; but if it dies, it bears a rich harvest.” Notice the directness of his answer.

“Do you want to see me?” He says. “You will know the one you are looking for in and through my Passion and Death, the fullness of God’s love revealed.

“Whom are you looking for?” Jesus asks Mary Magdalene, as she weeps at the empty tomb.

She is looking for a body; she doesn’t recognize the one who stands before her. How true that is in life. We stand weeping at the empty tomb, believing everything to be lost, not able to see that the one who has walked with us since the beginning, our true spouse, is standing there before us.

Just result mandates humanitarian aid both during and after a war. And restoration, like the non-coercive set of development tools in the R2P toolbox, focuses on things like organizing police and judicial institutions, protecting civil liberties and human rights, and building infrastructure.

Canada’s experience in Afghanistan suggests just result and restoration are illusive unless the international community is on the same page.

Without a comprehensive, consistent multilateral strategy that uses development tools to help build civil society following war, humanitarian gains are in jeopardy. Canada worked hard to provide infrastructure for irrigation from the Dahla Dam, vaccinate against polio and establish an environment for education through construction of schools. Yet, since Canada’s withdrawal from Afghanistan, these

signature projects are threatened despite the contingent of American troops who are providing support for the Afghan National Security Forces. And, violence continues to be a reality of Afghan life.

On the surface, bombing ISIS appears to be a moral ‘no brainer’. The group must be stopped, but without a concrete, workable and sustainable plan beyond airstrikes, the coalition of nations fighting ISIS may find itself mired in war for years to come, engaged against the next malevolent group to rise from the ashes.

Moral legitimacy for military intervention requires more than “degrade and contain”.

It demands justice for the long haul because regardless of theories and principles, human life hangs in the balance.

MLAs spar over Greenhills Mine incident

Last Friday’s explosion at the Greenhills Mine near Elkford sent three people to hospital for treatment of third-degree burns and smoke inhalation.

Now the provincial NDP, led by MLA Norm Macdonald, Mines critic, is questioning the BC Liberal government’s commitment to mine worker safety.

“Mine workers should be able to go to work and not get hurt,” said Macdonald. “So when the Chief Inspector of Mines commented on this latest explosion saying it is ‘not uncommon’ to have these explosions, that raises serious concerns about this government’s commitment to mine safety.”

Mines Inspector Al Hoffman made the comments to Global News, which reported, “Hoffman said flash fires like the one in the Greenhills incident were a part of most coal mining operations.

“It’s not uncommon to have small operational-type explosions or what they call ‘pops’ at one of these dryer plants,” he said.

“They’ll want to determine why there was coal dust in the air and what ignited it.”

“He said it could take several days or weeks to answer that.

“The good thing is, luckily no one was killed,” he said.”

“We’re always concerned when workers are injured and we’ll be working very hard to determine what the causes of the incident were.”

Minister of Energy and Mines Bill Bennett says the reporter did not include all Hoffman said.

“Chief Inspector Hoffman is

probably the most safety conscious person I have ever known,” Bennett said. “He was misquoted. The reporter left out some of what was stated.

Al actually said, “it is not uncommon for small pops to occur within the dryer system, the system is designed to handle these occurrences and minimise them. It is very unusual to have to have a flash explosion outside of the system.”

Macdonald points out that this is not the first incident at Greenhills, citing a 2011 burning injury and a 2010 incident in which four workers suffered smoke inhalation injuries at the same mine.

“What has the Liberal government done since the previous explosion? Why was the dust in the air not being controlled? Why was the safety of the workers not made a top priority?” asked Macdonald.

“The NDP are desperate to try to manufacture an issue and are hoping the public will believe the BC Liberal government doesn’t care about worker safety,” Bennett said.

“It is a silly argument but certainly consistent with the outlandish statements made by Norm Macdonald in recent years.”

Shane Simpson, New Democrat spokesperson on labour, drew connections to the tragic loss of lives in the Lakeland sawmill explosion, saying that the undermining of workplace safety enforcement and regulation that has taken place under the Liberal government is unacceptable and needs to change.

“The person in charge of regulations should not accept that this is normal,” said Simpson. “We should have zero tolerance for working conditions that could cause harm to workers.”

Dear Annie: About 10 years ago, I was working on a remodel project and discovered a hidden “treasure”: three dusty books stashed above some ductwork. Two were personal journals, and another was an art book with sexy photographs from the 1980s.

I briefly glanced at the journals and noticed they dealt with some romantic breakups. I didn’t read past that. Since I didn’t know who the owner was, I put all three books back, figuring they were not meant for public consumption.
