The Weekend View

Opinion: B.C.’s labour market goes global

B.C. Views by Tom Fletcher The labour situation in B.C. is showing increased signs of strain, even before a longpromised boom in heavy construction gets set to ramp up this summer. Jobs Minister Shirley Bond announced last week that B.C. is suspending its “provincial nomination” program for 90 days. This program allows the province to recommend people for federal immigration, based on skills in demand in B.C. The B.C. provincial nomination program saw its number of applications triple to 1,200 for the month of December, as the federal government cracked down on the temporary foreign worker program. Thousands of temporary foreign workers who have hit the fouryear deadline are being sent home, with many of them turning to the provincial nomination track. Bond has been pleading with Ottawa to raise B.C.’s annual provincial nomination quota from 5,000 to 7,000 or more. The three-month pause is so her ministry can add staff and speed up processing time. Backlogged applicants will still be considered, and

exemptions for health care workers and a northeast pilot program are being maintained. Even with the current slump in energy prices and before anticipated pipeline and liquefied natural gas projects start, the labour shortage in the northeast is near crisis. The last time I was in Dawson Creek, radio ads were offering signing bonuses for qualified truck drivers. In Fort St. John, grocery and hardware retailers have come to depend on foreign workers to keep going. While supposedly educated young people work part-time and refuse to leave the comforts of southern city life, this is the reality up north, and it’s only going to get worse. This summer, work is scheduled to start on the Site C dam on the Peace River, the most costly construction project in B.C. history. And a union vs. non-union battle reminiscent of the old Expo 86 labour wars is underway. The B.C. and Yukon Building Trades (BCYT) are demanding a project agreement that requires all workers on Site C to be paid their rates, and are warning of chaos on the huge project if they don’t get their way. BC Hydro CEO Jessica McDonald told me that’s not all they want. They are also seeking quotas for members of their unions on a project that will be a small city of 1,700 people at peak construction.

Tamara L’Hoost

MARKETING CONSULTANT tamara@kootenayadvertiser.com

BCYT executive director Tom Sigurdson says that while all sides acknowledge the need for foreign workers for Site C, he wants to control that too, working with their affiliated unions in the United States. There will be nonunion construction firms, some of them owned by aboriginal communities in the north. There will be contractors affiliated with the Christian Labour Association of Canada. The BCYT hopes to set wages and conditions for them all, and influence Ottawa’s temporary foreign worker program to boot. McDonald and Premier Christy Clark have politely told them to pound sand. Their formula would add millions in costs to the project, driving up BC Hydro rates even more than they are already rising. BC Hydro has already done dam upgrade projects using a “managed open site” model and it’s not inclined to return to the era of W.A.C. Bennett as Sigurdson demands. Sigurdson makes a valid point that when two concrete masons compare paycheques on the Site C project and one sees he’s making $5 an hour less, he won’t be happy. He will want the higher rate, and the BCYT is taking BC Hydro to court to ensure they can recruit new members on the site. It looks like a hot summer ahead. Letter: A historical view of the Fire Hall Our Cranbrook “Group of Seven” is beginning to paint a grim picture of the future of our Fire Hall #1. In recent Council meetings it would seem that some of our present Council, and city staff, are firmly committed to sell this building. It appears the time is now for Cranbrook citizens to become involved in this momentous decision in determining the fate of OUR heritage building. In 1929 the new Council, under the leadership of Mayor Roberts, broached the subject of the need for a new fire hall. By early March Council had decided to draw up a by-law to raise $31,000, by the sale of debentures, to build the fire hall and to submit the question to the ratepayers for their approval.

Complete details of the By-Law No. 388 were printed in the March 14th Cranbrook Courier. Cranbrook citizens were given the opportunity to vote, by ballot, to accept this By-Law on March 25th. The vote carried with a resounding 90% in favour of borrowing the funds so that Cranbrook could now have a fire hall worthy of the growing community. Council enjoyed the confidence of the ratepayers. The design was by City Superintendent Philpot and the City Works Department, plans drawn up by Colborne, a Cranbrook businessman, and local builder Jones won the construction bid using locally processed lumber and Cranbrook

Letter: Arts and culture rejuvenate Dear Mayor Pratt and members of Cranbrook City Council: We hope that you will take a few minutes to watch an inspiring Ted Talk before making your decision re the future of the old Fire Hall. You just have to Google Theaster Gates, Ted Talk. The Cranbrook & District Arts Council (CDAC) has the ability to create, through the old Fire Hall, what this artist did in Chicago. He started with $18,000, and has created a hub of cultural,

Lily Durham

PROMOTIONS lily@kootenayadvertiser.com

educational, and social activities in his community. Arts Councils in communities smaller than ours are doing it successfully. For several years CDAC has been operating in good faith towards the goal of eventually moving into the old Fire Hall to expand their capacity and program offerings. They have money in the bank specifically for a lift/elevator for the fire hall, for an architectural design, paid for a completed engineering study as requested by

bricks. The Cranbrook Courier of November 11, 1929 proudly displayed a photo of the new fire hall labelling it “The Lasting Structure”. Since then the paper frequently reported on Cranbrook’s fire hall, the men who worked there and the adjoining gardens. It became a place people were encouraged to visit. Through the ensuing years Councils had the foresight to purchase the properties belonging to MacPherson’s Funeral Home, the Baptist Church, the Knights of Pythias building, the Masonic Hall and a small home that was preventing the City owning a continuous frontage on 11th Avenue. How fortunate our City Fathers of the day had this foresight as it allowed our City Hall to be expanded, a small park to be developed, parking for the firemen and lots on which to

build our Police Station. In 1986 the Fire Hall gained the protection of Heritage Designation. So now the time appears to have come for our present City Council to decide what should happen to our building. I have not heard any mention of coming back to the public for our thoughts on this. The citizens of Cranbrook voted to borrow the money to build this civic building. Even if the present Council does not legally have to reengage the public, and gain its input, surely our present Council must feel that it’s only the morally right thing to do? So please Council, don’t be too ready to break up the area of OUR city-owned properties or to dispose of one of OUR few taxpayer-owned heritage buildings. ~Dave Humphrey, Cranbrook

the City, and have/are applying for hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants in support of their plans. Just as Theaster Gates proved that arts and culture definitely rejuvenates struggling neighbourhoods, the revitalization of our downtown core is something that local businesses and two previous City Councils also recognized. There is no solid reason to reject CDAC’s proposal. Federal and provincial governments do not return grant dollars to taxpayers because they weren’t used. If CDAC doesn’t obtain grants, the funds will go

to other communities, and Cranbrook loses the economic spin-offs. It is common practice for social service, recreational, environmental, and arts and cultural organizations to apply for grants. The City of Cranbrook also applies yearly for millions of dollars in grants in order to service our community. For the betterment of Cranbrook, we ask that you decide in favour of turning the old Fire Hall over to CDAC, like the Studio/Stage Door, keeping it a public building with a beneficial public purpose. ~Sharon & Joseph Cross, Cranbrook

Peppers... some like it hot

If you are any kind of vegetable gardener, chances are you have grown peppers. I personally don't like anything too spicy, but my husband and daughter like it hot. We have lots of staff that are always asking for hot stuff. Did you know there is an actual chart that measures the hotness of peppers? It's called the Scoville Chart. It is the closest thing to a standard form of measuring the heat in a pepper. It involves adding sugar to a solution until one can no longer taste the heat of the pepper. With so many people growing their own food, we decided this year to expand our already quite extensive pepper collection. Don't worry we will still have the regular bell peppers, banana, jalapeno, and all the old standbys, but here are some new varieties we will be growing for you as well; 1. Cute Stuff Gold; miniature variety that continuously yields big harvests. Produces up to three times more than regular peppers. Sweet taste with an apple shape make them great for stuffing. A great variety for pots and small spaces. 2. Hot Lemon; A heirloom variety from Ecuador. As hot as a cayenne, but has a very unique taste. Ripens to a pure lemon yellow, but can be eaten green. Skin is tender and their aroma is spicy. Best used fresh, but can be added to sauces for some heat. These peppers are narrow 3-4 inches long and distinctly wrinkled. 3.Mosquetero; This a a hybrid pepper. These are bred to be big healthy plants with loads of large, smooth , dark green, twolobed fruit. Heavy glossy peppers are 6" long and 3" wide. Mild to moderate heat. Matures from dark green to red. This pepper will tolerate coolness better than most. It likes to be staked because it produces so much. 4. Hot Portugal; One of the best hot peppers around. It is sweet and spicy, long with thin red skin and best of all it ripens in a shorter growing season. Best when allowed to ripen on the plant. Great fresh, cooked in soups and added to stir fries. Excellent also when dried and crushed. These little devils pack a punch, so be careful! Whether you are growing some of our golden bells, our chocolate beauties or some of these new varieties, remember peppers like sun. To be successful, a minimum of 6 hours of sun is required. The warmer and sunnier the better. They will not tolerate any frost, so don't put them out too early unless you have some type of protection. If possible water in the morning or earlier part of the day to avoid going into nighttime wet. This helps with preventing possible mildew issues. They need food...use a Nurseryland water soluble fertilizer weekly for good yields. Given the hints above, peppers are pretty easy to grow. In the ground, in pots, the options are many. Until next week, happy gardening.

More funds went to other Rotary projects and charities including the recently-completed “Paint the Train” project in Cranbrook which will have its grand opening this spring. The Cranbrook Sunrise Rotary Club has received assistance from other communityminded organizations in the region, says Dobie. “We’d especially like to thank the Mark Creek and Wasa Lions Clubs, the Kimberley Rotary Club, the Cranbrook Rotary Club and the Kimberley Volunteer Ski Patrol which have all helped us out.” Taylor Adams Professional Chartered Accountants are again Title Sponsor of the family-orientated event in which all participants will receive a post ride meal, special prizes and a personalized Swag Bag. Plan to keep your teeth–before and after retirement British Columbians are keeping their teeth longer. Most adults can expect to enter retirement with most, if not all, of their natural teeth. However, regular brushing and flossing alone, even with an electric toothbrush, does not guarantee that you’ll still be eating apples at 90. Continuing to visit your dentist regularly for professional care after retirement is just as important to keeping your teeth well into old age. Your mouth ages too. Even the most scrupulously clean mouth will likely end up with some form of gum recession (when your gums shrink and more of your tooth’s root is exposed and

vulnerable to cavities) or dental disease. For example, 43 percent of adults 60–79 years of age have root cavities compared to 6 percent of adults 20–39 years of age.1 Dental conditions are often extensive in older adults and can cause pain, infection and tooth loss. The number of adults without any teeth rises from 4 percent among 40–59-year-olds to 22 percent among 60–79-year-olds.1 Studies also show that BC adults have a higher combined rate of decayed (cavities), missing and filled teeth.2 Losing your natural teeth can affect your nutrition and enjoyment of a variety of foods; lead to slurred speech;

and reduce self-esteem. Dental disease can also negatively impact your general health; there are links between poor oral health and other health conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease. Adults over the age of 60 also have the highest incidence of oral cancer; other risk factors include a high consumption of alcohol and tobacco, especially when combined.3 Oral cancers can be devastating but are very treatable if caught early; it is estimated that approximately 84 percent of oral cancers can be detected by a dentist.4 With planning and ongoing prevention, a 60-year-old can retain their vitality and their teeth for a long time.

Steps to oral health…for life Keep your teeth, gums and dental work clean & maintained. Brush daily, especially at bedtime, with a soft toothbrush or electric toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Please floss! Make sure you floss at least once a day, especially around dental work like crowns. Speak to your dentist about any special care for your dental work. Your teeth, gums and jaw bones change with age. You may require some repeat procedures or need to have your dental work repaired or replaced well before you are in advanced age.

Keep up your regular dental exams and cleaning schedule— even after you retire from work. Plan ahead for all your extended health care needs, including dental care. Consider investing in a private or group plan when you retire, or put aside savings to cover regular preventive care including dental exams and cleanings. Early detection of oral disease through regular examinations by a dentist can help to stop or slow the progression of oral disease and lead to better outcomes. Your dentist will monitor the health of your soft tissues and teeth; screen for oral cancer; review any general health concerns; and monitor the ongoing fit and function of your dental work.

Keep it healthy. What’s good for your body is good for your mouth! Limit the amount of sugary foods and drinks you consume throughout the day. Choose nutritious snacks and drinks, such as cheese or nuts, and water. Rinse with water after eating or drinking.

Keep your dentist or certified specialist up to date.

YOUR DENTAL WORK NEEDS ONGOING MAINTENANCE TO STAY IN GOOD SHAPE. Dental work doesn’t last forever. Even with regular brushing and normal wear and tear. Make professional dental care part of your plan to stay healthy as you age. Regular dental exams detect problems early and prevent dental disease.

To learn more talk to your dentist or visit yourdentalhealth.ca

Your dentist or certified specialist is the doctor of your mouth. Update them on any medications you are taking and/or changes to your health. Many chronic diseases directly affect your teeth, bones and soft oral tissues. For example, some medications can create ‘dry mouth’ which can increase your risk of decay. Stay active, stay connected, eat a healthy diet, take care of your teeth— and don’t forget about your extended health care needs! Your healthy smile can stay with you…for life. For more information on caring for your oral health at any age, talk to your dentist or visit yourdentalhealth.ca

mality as a security measure since Kenyan authorities assured him we would have no problems in their country.

Garry Sowerby is an adventure driver, who has circumnavigated the globe and set a number of international records. Here he describes a dangerous driving incident, it’s unlikely many would encounter in their daily commute.

by Garry Sowerby

When I heard the first pop, I didn’t realize it was gunfire. “Go, go, go!” Our escorts yelled. My partner Ken Langley slouched deep into the driver’s seat and nailed the throttle while four onboard police constables sprayed machinegun fire out the window at six bandits firing on us. There was plenty of yelling, mostly at Ken to go faster. I imagined a bullet hitting him in the head, the truck spinning out of control and rolling repeatedly on the floor of Kenya’s unforgiving Kaisut Desert. A photograph of my four-month-old daughter Lucy flashed in my mind. She would never know her father, shot by bandits and left to rot in the desert while trying to set a world driving record. It was Monday, April 9, 1984. Ken and I were deep into a quest to better the speed record from the bottom of Africa to the top of Europe. Six days earlier, we had left Cape Agulhas, South Africa, the geographic southern tip of Africa, headed for Nordcap, Norway in our then-new 1984 GMC Suburban truck. We were determined to complete the trek in under a month. It was now eight hours since we had left Nairobi and the safety of the home of the Canadian High Commissioner to Kenya, on the drive north to the Ethiopian border. And the bullets were flying. At dinner the night before, High Commissioner David Miller advised we would pick up armed escorts in Laisamis, an isolated outpost two hundred kilometres north of the equator on the southern edge of the barren Kaisut Desert. He figured it was as much a for-

us to this desolate nowhere of rock and sand. If only we had not plunged so far into debt during a 74-day drive around the world four years earlier, Ken Langley and I would probably have gone back to our jobs as a lawyer and an automotive test and evaluation officer in Ottawa. More shots. The truck fishtailed from side to side on the rutted track. Earlier, I had pulled our sixmonth-old GMC Suburban truck up to a shabby guard shack in Laisamis right on time. No tour buses were parked out front. Gangs of camera-wielding foreigners were nowhere to be seen. The pavement ended there. Three wide boards bristling with dozens of rusty steel spikes blocked the dusty northbound track. The escort party had expected us at noon and since it would take at least six hours to cross the desolate stretch of rock and sand between Laisamis and the Ethiopian border, promptness was encouraged. “Why escorts?” I had asked the officer in charge, while checking out four heavily armed police standing alongside the spike boards. “No problem,” he replied. But there was a problem and, with bullets slamming into the right side of our truck, it was only a matter of time before we would become another statistic of the Shifta of the Kaisut Desert. The gunfire subsided. Seconds dragged. The truck was swaying dangerously as we tore across the parched moonscape. Ken realized we had a flat tire but was bent on getting distance between the attackers and us. “We’d better stop or we’ll snap an axle,” I warned, visualizing us stranded out there with a hostile welcoming committee. Ken pulled over and we assessed the damage. The right rear tire had been hit as well as one of the roof-mounted spares. A bullet had ripped through a headlight, rupturing the cooling system’s expansion tank. Coolant dripped onto the hot sand. The constables took up defensive positions while Ken and I changed the blown tire. Of course, I had to find the jack, a task that involved unloading see Dread page 27

Things to See & Do Hugs: HUGS! HUGS! AND MORE HUGS to the TELUS workers working in Kimberley up by the old hospital. I was having a very bad day with my husband who is in the Pines special care home. As I was driving along I watched the TGIF performance of these 3 men. I laughed and laughed all the way down to the bottom of the hill and then I just had to go back. When I pulled up I think they thought I was going to harass them but instead I told them they had topped off my day! Hugs: Hugs to all those people who follow the bylaw and have their dog on a leash in town limits. Slugs: To the people that let their dogs run loose in city limits and around Elizabeth Lake.

Hugs: To Karla and her staff at the Playpen and Jamie and his staff at Cranbrook Veterinary Clinic for taking such good care of Cooper while we were on holidays. We are happy to report that he seems to be back to his old self. Thank you for being such caring professionals. Hugs: Huge hugs to Drs.Turner and Nish and their staff, for making this dental-phobe feel very comfortable and secure in their care. I had a tooth pulled in this office and with their care did not have one minute of post-care pain. I feel very blessed to have dental care of this caliber. Thanks!! Hugs: To all the staff of Dairy Queen for your great service, especially for the seniors who come in.

Hugs: To Eunice & family at the Bamboo Garden for making my daughter’s birthday on March 6, such a success. The personal placemats you made were perfect, Eunice. Thank You! Hugs: Big giant hugs to Dianne Moir of Kimberley for picking up my dog who took off running in the storm the other day, and returning him to us. And also reporting it to the radio station. We need more nice people like you in this world. I am so thankful to you. Slugs: To the two girls who took my Golden Retriever named Roxy, you know who you are. She had a life with me. No one will ever stop looking for her. You should be ashamed for what you have done.

“

weeks and winning 3rd at the Canadian National Championships really gave me a confidence boost coming into these last races.” Mahler said. “All of the coaches and ski service staff have been incredible and our new Next Gen / Development Team has a great energy. We all want to make the next step to the World Cup team.” Current Canadian Ski Cross athlete and Olympic Champion Marielle Thompson won the World Junior title in 2013 and offered her take on the event: “It’s great to see the younger athletes having success on the world stage and it’s a very positive stepping stone in the right direction for

I’m so happy for our entire team!,”

India Sherret, Canadian Ski Cross development team

India Sherret has put an exclamation mark on her breakout season – winning 2015 FIS Freestyle World Junior Championship Ski Cross Gold for Canada. Sherret, from Cranbrook, BC, is a member of the Canadian Ski Cross Next Gen development team and races for Alberta Ski Cross. “I had a great day!” said Sherret. “I’m so happy for our entire team! We’ve had a lot of success over the past two weeks winning three National Championships in Canada, Switzerland and Italy. To win the World Junior Championships is huge and it says a lot about our program and the next wave of Ski Cross athletes in Canada.” Sherret finished 7th in qualifying after a few mistakes, which she put into the learning bank as she prepared for the next rounds. With great starts throughout the day and a determined approach, she was able to battle her way to the finals and take 1st place. Kris Mahler, from Canmore, AB, and skiing out of the Craigleith Ski Club, finished 4th on the men’s side. He was leading the big final until the second last turn when he slid out on his hip and went off course. “I’ve been skiing really well over the last few

India and the program. I’m very happy for her and her teammates.” The team was led by Sead Causevic, Canada Ski Cross Head Coach of Development. “The entire team skied great today. India and Kris’ performances today were incredible and it was great to have some additional coaching support with Stanley Hayer and Andy Voukoun” stated Causevic. “Marcos our ski tech did an amazing job and he deserves a lot of credit for our win today. It was great to see all the men make it into the top 16 and unfortunately there was a little wind that affected the qualification results for the women. I’m very proud of the efforts put forward by our athletes.” Women’s 2015 FIS Freestyle World Junior Championship (Canada’s placements) 1 – India Sherret 17 – Zoe Chore 20 – Alexa Velcic 27 – Abby McEwen Men’s 2015 FIS Freestyle World Junior Championship (Canada’s placements) 4 – Kris Mahler 8 – Matt Brady 15 – Adam Gibson 16 – Ned Ireland

Join the fight against cancer BONE

Primary bone cancer starts in the bone’s cells. A rare disease, it is not the same as secondary bone cancer, or bone metastases, which starts elsewhere in the body and spreads to the bones. Osteosarcoma is the most common type of bone cancer. It starts in new tissue in growing bones, most often in the knee area. Osteosarcoma tends to spread to other parts of the body, especially the lungs.

BRAIN

Primary brain tumours start in the brain and can be either benign or malignant. Cancerous tumours that begin to grow in other parts of the body and spread to the brain are called secondary or metastatic brain tumours. Elsewhere in the body, benign tumours are generally not considered as dangerous as malignant tumours. In the brain, however, both kinds can be serious and possibly lifethreatening.

BREAST

Breast cancer starts in breast tissue cells, which extend beyond the actual breasts, from the armpits across to the breastbone in the middle of the chest and up to the collarbone. The breasts sit on the chest muscles that cover the ribs. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death by cancer in women.

COLORECTAL

Most colorectal cancers start in the cells that line the inside of the colon or the rectum, which make up the large intestine (large bowel). The large intestine is the last part of the digestive system. Colorectal cancer usually grows slowly and in a predictable way and is curable when diagnosed at an early stage. Colorectal cancer is the second most fatal cancer in men and the third most fatal cancer in women.

HODGKIN LYMPHOMA

Hodgkin lymphoma is a cancer that starts in the lymphocytes, the cells of the lymphatic system, which extends across the body. Hodgkin lymphoma usually begins in a group of lymph nodes in one part of the body, most often the neck. It grows in a predictable, orderly way from one lymph node group to the next. Eventually, it can spread to almost any tissue or organ in the body through the lymphatic system or the bloodstream.

Cancer is the leading cause of death in this country, with some 30 per cent of Canadians dying from one type of cancer or another. In April, Daffodil Month, the Canadian Cancer Society asks the public to spare a thought for all those who are affected by this disease and to do something concrete in the fight against cancer. Despite progress — the survival rate is now at 63 per cent — more Canadians die of cancer than any other disease. That’s why funding activities are organized throughout the month of April to help prevent cancer and fund research; it’s so that one day we can win the battle against this disease that kills 210 Canadians every day. You can contribute to the fight against cancer by purchasing a bouquet of daffodils, which are a symbol of renewal, hope and courage. You can also wear a daffodil pin as a sign of solidarity with those who are fighting for their lives; you’ll be doing so along with all their families, and with the families of those who have lost their battle. You can also donate time or money or help raise funds. Lastly, you can fight against cancer by taking care of your health and minimizing your risk of developing this disease. Even though you have no control over your age and your genes, you can control other risk factors, such as smoking, alcohol use, physical inactivity, chronic stress and sun exposure. To learn more about cancer or about Daffodil Month activities, visit www.cancer.ca.

LEUKEMIA

Leukemia is a cancer that starts in the stem cells of the bone marrow. Bone marrow, which makes blood cells, is the soft, spongy material that fills the centre of most bones. Leukemia develops when the blood stem cells produce abnormal blood cells. Over time, the leukemia cells crowd out normal blood cells, making it hard for the white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets to do their jobs.

Primary liver cancer starts in the cells, bile ducts, blood vessels, or connective tissue of the liver. It is uncommon and is different from secondary liver cancer or metastatic liver cancer, which spread to the liver from other parts of the body. Most primary liver cancers begin in liver cells called hepatocytes, and the most common type is hepatocellular carcinoma.

The pancreas is a large gland that lies behind the stomach, deep inside the upper abdomen. The pancreas is part of the digestive system and is also part of the hormonal system, for which it makes insulin and other hormones. Most pancreatic cancers start in the ducts that carry pancreatic juices.

LIVER

PROSTATE

The prostate is part of the male reproductive system. This gland’s main function is to make seminal fluid, which mixes with sperm from the testicles to make semen. Prostate cancer is the most common type found in men. It usually grows slowly and can often be cured or successfully managed. Nevertheless, prostate cancer is the third leading cause of death by cancer in men.

SKIN

The most common types of skin cancer are squamous cell cancer and basal cell cancer. Both are known as non-melanoma skin cancer and can usually be treated successfully.

OVARIAN

There are two main types of lung cancer: small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer, which is the most common and slower-growing type. Small cell lung cancer grows quickly and often spreads to distant parts of the body. Lung cancer is the leading cause of death by cancer in both men and women.

Guardian First Aid Service Ltd.

There are three main types of ovarian cancer. For each type, the cancer starts in a different type of cell found in the ovaries: • epithelial cell cancer starts in the cells that cover the outer surface of the ovary; • germ cell tumours start in the egg cells within the ovary and generally occur in younger women. Germ cell cancer can even develop in children. • Stromal tumours start in the connective tissue cells that hold the ovary together.

STOMACH

TESTICULAR

Stomach cancers can start in the lymphatic tissue (lymphoma), in the stomach’s muscular tissue (sarcoma), or in the tissues that support the organs of the digestive system (gastrointestinal stromal tumours). They are treated in different ways.

LUNG

More than 90 percent of testicular cancers start in germ cells, which are the spermforming cells within the testicles. Other types of cancer can spread to the testicles, at which point they are called testicular metastasis. It is the most common cancer to occur in young men who are between 15 and 29 years old.

1. In Victoria, I toured the International Passive House which uses design principles that reduce energy consumption by up to 90% compared to other buildings at a cost of only 10% more than the average home to build. 2. Government is providing $100,000 to the Canadian Passive House institute (CanPHI) West to train up to 200 qualified professionals so that construction and design professionals can build the most energy efficient buildings possible. 3. I urge any contractors, construction and design professionals in East Kootenay to consider applying for this 1 week course. Energy consumption savings of 90% in East Kootenay would result in thousands of dollars in savings annually for residents who built a passive house. Widely considered one of the most influential figures in “nuevo flamenco” music, he incorporates elements of flamenco rumba, jazz & many forms of world music into his work. He is a Juno Award winner, Acoustic Guitar (magazine)’s Player’s Choice Award silver winner in the Flamenco Category, and a threetime winner of the Canadian Smooth Jazz award for Guitarist of the Year. He has recorded on the EMI, E1 Music and Narada labels and has sold over 1.5 million records worldwide. Cook has recorded eight studio albums, three live DVDs and has traveled the world exploring musical traditions that he has blended into his style of rumba flamenco. In addition to headlining concerts and festivals, he has opened for such legends as B.B. King, Ray Charles and Diana Krall. He has performed with Welsh soprano Charlotte Church on The Tonight Show and toured with legendary Irish band, The Chieftains and had two PBS tv specials featuring him and his music. “Guitar virtuoso Jesse Cook is a walking embodiment of the gypsy music he plays: eclectic, energetic, and very exciting. Perhaps that is why he says that his music chose him, and not the other way around. After all, he does seem like the perfect candidate.” ~The Star Online Cranbrook tickets available on Friday April 10th at the Key City Theatre Box office or call 250-426-7006 or online at www.keycitytheatre.com. Joseph Cross art, photos and stories at College of the Rockies

Photo Courtesy of Joseph and Sharon Cross

(Above) Blackfoot Crossing, one of the places visited by Joseph and Sharon Cross as they followed in the footsteps of explorer David Thompson. (Inset) A view from Loder Peak. The Canadian Federation of University Women Cranbrook Club is thrilled to invite the public to a premiere slide presentation of the paintings, photographs and stories by Cranbrook artist, Joseph Cross, as he and Sharon, retraced the amazing journeys of the famous Canadian fur trader and surveyor, David Thompson, throughout our region. The results of Cross’s work is The David Thompson Legacy Art Project. This free event is being held April 16, 7-8 p.m. at College of the Rockies, Rm. 189. “Since no paintings or sketches survived from Thompson’s time and his travels were undertaken before the invention of photography, no imagery existed, until now, to give life to Thompson’s remarkable stories”, said Joseph Cross. He and Sharon Cross undertook the project intending to create an exhibition of historically accurate, museum quality paintings depicting the central events of Thompson’s remarkable life. The invitation by the North American David Thompson Bicentennials Partnership was a non-commissioned request. Financial assistance from the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance Major Project Funding Program for Heritage helped the Cross’s with their site research for the Columbia Basin portion of the David Thompson Legacy Art Project. Additionally, the ‘Project’ was to commemorate women’s silent role in the fur trade and exploration of the continent, and contain the native involvement and perspective. David Thompson

married Charlotte Small, the daughter of a Cree mother and Scottish father, at Ile a la Crosse, Saskatchewan. Together, they had thirteen children. How does a mother prepare herself and children for a journey of thousands of miles through uncharted country without any of today’s modern conveniences - crossing raging, overflowing creeks and streams in the mountains? Likely by gritting her teeth, hanging on to the horse’s tails and praying they do not get swept away as often happened in such currents. The courage of Charlotte and the other women on these expeditions, often pregnant, and expected to share in the work, look after children and prepare meals, needs to be recognized. Charlotte travelled 50,000 km. with David - approximately three times the distance of Lewis and Clark. Charlotte and David, loyal companions of 57 years, would often stay out at night watching the stars and no doubt recalling their many yesterdays of how they had traversed the rivers and slept under those same stars. Theirs is truly a love story that kept them together in the days when, for men, taking a ‘country wife’ back home was uncommon. “As we read the books about David Thompson, and how he so meticulously and eloquently recorded his journeys as a surveyor, and fur trader, in the mostly unexplored and vast reaches of Canada, we became increasingly inspired.” said Joseph. “After identifying sites to explore, we set out either backpacking,

hiking or canoeing. The creation of paintings for this inspiring and expanding initiative is exciting personally and professionally. Both Sharon and I soon recognized that the seeds of this project were planted years ago in the unseen, preparing us for this project that has and continues to manifest.” “Weather forced us to retreat several times.” he admitted. “Loder Peak was one of those sites. After the third attempt we were successful.” (pictured) David Thompson wrote of the scene of Loder Peak saying: “Our view from the heights to the eastward was vast and unbounded; the eye had not the strength to discriminate its termination.” Of the view from the same point looking westward he wrote, “Never before did I behold so just, so perfect, a resemblance of the Waves of the Ocean in a wintry storm.” Joseph Cross is a selftaught, professional artist. A career he aspired to since the age of eight. He previously worked in the business/financial industry including several management positions until 1979. Galleries around the world have exhibited his art, and International Artist Magazine has published several feature articles on his work, which have provided valuable exposure. He has placed very well in International competitions; yet, he is a down to earth man who gladly shares his knowledge with other artists to help them achieve their dreams. He currently sits on the Board of BC Arts Council; and on the College of the Rockies University Studies, Fine Arts, Hu-

manities and Social Science Program Advisory Committee.

portunity was right in front of us and we could either rise to the challenge or walk away” shares Menno Dueck. So along with Christie, his wife and business partner, they rose to that challenge and Fisher Peak RV Rentals was born that summer. The Duecks started with a Hassle Free package delivering and setting up their trailers (including camping accessories) in provincial and private campgrounds enabling out of area residents to camp in the beauty surrounding Cranbrook and Kimberley without the hassle of towing or the expense of buying a trailer. “Our own camping has brought us good times and great memories, and we wanted to make it affordable and easy for anyone to camp” says Menno “so we recently added U-tows (small travel trailers and tent trailers) and a Back to Basics family tent package with accessories like propane stove, cooler, mats and dishes.” Fast forward to 2015, and their internet based business is now a full-fledged camping rental company sporting a new name, Fisher Peak Camping & Trailer Rentals. In the meantime, Dueck Enterprises, their commercial and residen-

tial construction company, was on the hunt for a new location. “Our shop has been in the industrial park for years and the frustration of waiting at railway crossings many times a day was just getting to be too much for myself and our crew” says Menno. “We heard that Kootenay Fuel Injection (on the highway between Fas Gas and Elizabeth Lake Lodge), was looking to downsize and a purchase was made.” With some reconfiguring of the building layout and a bit of land work, the Duecks were finally able to bring their two businesses together and include a portion for Kootenay Fuel Injection, too. “We couldn’t be happier with the new location” adds Christie, “everything under one roof has made operating our two companies so much easier.” Although the products and services offered by their two companies are vastly different, “we are still in the business of customer service, of providing a quality product and satisfying experience to our clientele” says Menno. “Without our construction company, we would never have found the unique and exciting business of camping rentals.”
