But as Campbell River’s first entry in the elite, international competition, Fletcher is simply looking ahead to seeing what’s over the horizon in the 10th running of the VanIsle 360.

“For us, no question, it’s the adventure and the challenge,” he said. “To take on an approximately 580 nautical mile race, with its currents, tides, navigation and getting to race the coast, this is the only race that offers that.”

The Northern Lights VI will be on display this weekend during the annual Ocean Pacific Marine Show, which runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Boasting a 60-foot mast, the boat will carry nearly 2,500 square feet of sail traveling downwind and about 1,300 feet upwind, pushing a top speed of about 13 knots per hour.

“It’s considered a performance cruising boat,”

said Fletcher. “To make it a racing boat we pretty much double the sail area.”

Fletcher, the 34-yearold owner of Genesis Marketing, has been sailing since the age of six. Originally from Vancouver, he moved to Campbell River five years ago for the lifestyle and promptly became a member of the local yacht club.

His Northern Lights crew is also local, made up of sailors from Campbell River and the Comox Valley. They include Dave Dakin, Drew Hadfield, Wade Major, John North, Glen Rumley and Dave Shaw.

“This is my first VanIsle 360, but I have crew who have done this race,” said Fletcher, who will be one of, if not the, youngest skippers in the event. “It’s a good, veteran group.”

Fletcher has circumnavigated Vancouver Island, even if he hasn’t raced it.

He said the team has no illusions of winning the race outright — “Not a chance; the overall win

goes to the better funded racing teams,” he said — but will be placed in a division with similar sized and constructed crafts.

“I’m not sure yet if we’re going to be in Division II or Division III,” he said, “but our goal is to be competitive in our own division.”

Owning and maintaining a sailboat is not an inexpensive pursuit, and an undertaking like the VanIsle 360 adds to the expense in extra sails, mandatory safety equipment and training and general preparation to

make the vessel raceready.

The Koala Springs beverage company has signed on as the Northern Lights team sponsor, and Fletcher has gotten strong backing from Ocean Pacific Marina as well.

The VanIsle 360 is broken into 10 racing legs, with several lay-up days.

The boats will stop in Campbell River on June 8 and motor the next morning to Deepwater Bay before raising sail for a short, 24.5-nautical mile jaunt to Hardwick Island.

Nowadays, the popular argument among those unwise enough to engage in social media before letting their brains process their work is that their Twitter accounts were hacked.

It’s surprising Clark did not use that one on at least one occasion last week.

B.C.’s labour market goes global The labour situation in B.C. is showing increased signs of strain, even before a longpromised boom in heavy construction gets set to ramp up this summer.

Jobs Minister Shirley Bond announced last week that B.C. is suspending its “provincial nomination” program for 90 days.

This program allows the province to recommend people for federal immigration, based on skills in demand in B.C. The B.C. provincial nomination program saw its number of applications triple to 1,200 for the month of December, as the federal government cracked down on the temporary foreign worker program.

Thousands of temporary foreign workers who have hit the four-year deadline are being sent home, with many of them turning to the provincial nomination track.

Bond has been pleading with Ottawa to raise B.C.’s annual provincial nomination quota from 5,000 to 7,000 or more.

The three-month pause is so her ministry can add staff and speed up processing time.

The BCYT hopes to set wages and conditions for them all, and influence Ottawa’s temporary foreign worker program to boot.

McDonald and Premier Christy Clark have politely told them to pound sand. Their formula would add millions in costs to the project, driving up BC Hydro rates even more than they are already rising. BC Hydro has already done dam upgrade projects using a “managed open site” model and it’s not inclined to return to the era of W.A.C. Bennett as Sigurdson demands.

Sigurdson makes a valid point that when two concrete masons compare paycheques on the Site C project and one sees he’s making $5 an hour less, he won’t be happy. He will want the higher rate, and the BCYT is taking BC Hydro to court to ensure they can recruit new members on the site.

It looks like a hot summer ahead.

It is unfortunate the Courier-Islander has closed its door as we would have liked to speak to the reporter who we feel did not do a decent job of investigating all the facts.

Not once did she come to hear our side of the story. She just took the word of the cat owner.

Well, they say there are two sides to every story.

You have heard one. Now here is the other.

We have always been respectful of other people’s property and never impose on them. We try to be good neighbours but, unfortunately, not

everyone is like that. We work hard to beautify our yard but, so far, we have had to dig up all our shrubs and flowers in our front and replace them with stones, at considerable cost and energy. The area was so full of cat poop we could no longer stand it. It is unsanitary and in the summer it smells. We will not work in a cat litter box.

As for being inhumane, we have never harmed an animal. We have owned animals in the past and they all died from old age. We have taken cats to the SPCA

and even donated money towards the upkeep.

We did not put out a cat trap happily but it was the last resort. We needed to do something since town hall won’t. It seems cat owners have everything going for them but other homeowners have no recourse.

There are bylaws for dogs. Why not for cats?

We have been told Campbell River is the cat capital of Vancouver Island.

A cat trap is not inhumane and, as we understand it, is legal. The note on the cat’s collar stated an “unpleasant” night. Of

course it was unpleasant as it wasn’t free to roam.

It was not hurt in any way. In fact, when we took it out, we held it and petted it. It was not at all nervous or upset. When we released it thinking it would dart for home, we had to encourage it to go. Finally, it went into another neighbour’s yard.

As for us being inhumane, we fail to see who is the inhumane party. A cat allowed to run wild is subject to being hit by a car, taken by a predator – eagles have been known to catch cats. In fact, there is an eagle nest

a few yards away from this cat owner’s house.

There are chicks that will need to be fed. Now that would be “unpleasant.”

Finally, in response to the scathing article in the Courier’s Roses & Thorns, we don’t know you. We have never met.

You must be someone with very little else to do but jump on any bandwagon to smear others even though you have never met them. How did you arrive at such a conclusion that we are such horrible people?

You simply read one side of a story which was a little exaggerated and never

bothered to think that maybe there is another side to this story. Perhaps in the future, you should check all the facts before you become judge, jury and executioner.

Too bad it couldn’t have been dealt with between the two parties involved instead of splashing it across the front page of a newspaper. No doubt to gain sympathy.

So, after all this hue and cry, guess what? The cat is back, still roaming through our yard and on our deck.

We rest our case.

After reading the soccer thank you letters I wonder where they were during the referendum debate, if this is such a great idea.

I am concerned that on the one hand they want to promote healthy exercise for our youth, but on the other they show that some laws can be ignored. As part of Make a Will Week 2015, the Province is zeroing in on the younger generation, and calling for people under the age of 40 to get busy and make their

wills now, said Suzanne Anton, Attorney General and Minister of Justice.

A provincewide poll conducted for the Society of Notaries Public of B.C. found that 80% of

people age 18 to 34 do not have a current and legal will. While people in this age range may think they don’t need a will, the fact is many important life events

generally occur during those years. People may build a career, open a business, and purchase major assets such as real estate or property. Many individuals in this age

guess that they must justify the current council decision to disobey the voters who bothered to show up to vote NO for the whole package, not just one portion.

While I’m not a great fan of referenda, when they are used they should be followed. The point is made that the referendum was defeated because of the expensive hockey arena/event centre. I wonder how the hockey players feel pitted against the soccer Moms.

I submit that the whole project was too expensive and that is why it was voted down. One notices that they don’t call for a separate referendum on fields alone, they know it would lose also.

It wasn’t so long ago that my wife and I stood on the sidelines in our rain gear to watch our “striker” son run back and forth on a wet soccer pitch. None of our games were cancelled due to elements but that was long ago in the stone

age. Perhaps those other communities who had to build artificial turf fields don’t have such forward thinking First Nations communities as we do to build excellent sports facilities at no cost to the local taxpayer.

I know we all pay for First Nations as federal taxpayers, but I welcome other Canadians helping paying for the future of our children.

One only has to look at the NCAA website to document the increased injuries associated with the artificial turf in American Colleges. As well, there is mounting concern regarding schools with artificial turf not attracting prospective recruits for the same reason.

Major league baseball in two years will only have one field with artificial turf because of the injuries and the cost of maintenance. If it isn’t good enough for professional baseball then why expose our children to the hazards?

Once the field is in then the next most

expensive cost is maintenance. Recently a former classmate of mine, who is a lawyer in California, was talking on social media about the increased injuries on toboggan slides and the successful lawsuits against municipalities because of hazards not removed.

The Family Tax Cut allows you to transfer up to $50,000 of taxable income to an eligible spouse in a lower tax bracket.

The Family Tax Cut is in effect for the 2014 tax year (although continues to be subject to parliamentary approval) and may provide a maximum family benefit of $2,000 in the form of a non-refundable tax credit. Council concerned about ‘traffic bedlam’ with new clinic KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

City council approved construction plans for the new Discovery Chiropractic Clinic at Tuesday’s council meeting, but not before councillors aired some concerns.

The clinic is expected to be built at 1241 Dogwood Street – a gravel parking lot next to the downtown fire hall.

The property housed the Extreme Weather Shelter the past two winters and last August was swapped by the city with Discovery Chiropractic’s site at 1180 Fir Street.

Dr. Richard Kronk told council Tuesday that the new site will allow him and fellow owners Dr. Joshua West and Dr. Sandra Jensen to expand their business.

“Our vision for the past 15 years has been to grow our practice, not only in size but to also create a more multi-disciplinary style practice,” Kronk said.

Coachman serves up combo Exhibitors awarded

Forbidden Jazz headlines the Coachman Pub this Sunday afternoon.

Featuring Jake Masri on trumpet, flugelhorn, amd vocals, Grant McLellan on guitar, Grahame Edwards on bass and Neil Clark on drums, they appeal to audiences of all ages by showcasing a wide variety of timeless jazz standards plus originals.

Representing more than four decades of experience, their unique blend of voice, brass, and strings will weave their collective magic through three sets of entertaining music.

Filling the position of lead guitar is local favourite McLellan who has carved a niche for himself as a guitar teacher and musical sideman in numerous local groups of various cultural styles. Talented multiinstrumentalist Edwards plays acoustic and electric bass, percussion and trumpet. He has appeared with countless local ensembles in every genre from choral to musical theatre, big band jazz to classical.

A rare addition to the combo, Victoria born drummer Clark spent many years collaborating with some of its best local musicians as an active member of that jazz community. Since relocating to the Comox Valley in 1996, he has performed with musicians such as the Annie Siegel Band, Jazztet, and

Campbell River Museum and Shaw TV to screen film on North Campbell River

The Museum at Campbell River has been working in partnership with Shaw TV to produce a documentary film recording the memories of long time residents of North Campbell River.

The inaugural viewing of the film will be at the Museum on Saturday, April 18 at 2:30 p.m.

The name of the documentary is ‘The Hay Days of North Campbell River’ and its purpose is to capture the history of the community and record some of the changes that took place after the 1940s, when the town of Campbell River experienced an economic boom with large developments like the John Hart Dam and the establishment of the Elk Falls Mill that forever changed the face of the landscape.

Prior to that time, logging, fishing and farming were the industries that shaped peoples’ lives, particularly for those who had settled north of the Campbell River.

The now famous Painter’s Lodge was built on land purchased from the Hudsons, and to this day the Hudsons and Painters families remain close.

In the early days, the sons of the Vanstones and Perkins worked as fishing guides for the Lodge while the wives and daughters could often be found working at the Lodge or in its kitchen.

Discovery Chiropractic officially took over ownership of the property from the city on April 1 and with council approving a major development permit on Tuesday night, construction can soon get underway.

The city will pick up yard waste from the curb side every week until November 27 after council decided at its Tuesday meeting to expand the program.

Council agreed to use $124,000 it received from Multi-Material BC this year to offset the cost of providing the service for nine months this year and for nine months next year.

Weekly yard waste pick-up will be in effect from March 1 to November 30 in 2016.

Cancer canvassers hit the bricks Y

ou may be seeing daffodil pins all over Campbell River.

During the month of April every year, the Canadian Cancer Society holds their Daffodil Campaign. This is in recognition and support of people dealing with cancer, and to show them that they are not alone. Unfortunately, too many of us know someone who has cancer, has had cancer, or has succumbed to this awful disease.

Events will be happening all month. From April 1-30, volunteers will be canvassing your neighborhood for donations. These donations are used for cancer research and the many support programs available right here in Campbell River and on the Island. They also have daffodil pin boxes in various businesses in Campbell River. There will be two Tag Days, one on April 18 and one on April 25 at various locations throughout the city. Cancer Society volunteers will be easily identified. They will be wearing a blue lanyard with their name badge.

The local Unit office of the Canadian Cancer Society is located at 1423B-16th Avenue and the hours are 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Monday - Friday (11-1 July/Aug). They have a ‘wig room’ where people undergoing chemotherapy can borrow wigs, scarves, hats and prosthesis. They also

provide rides for cancer patients to their cancer related appointments, whether it’s in town, or down to Victoria.

Baby teeth are important too Keeping your child’s baby teeth healthy and strong is important to their oral and overall health and development. Baby teeth begin to appear around 6 months and can last until a child is 13 or 14. They are an important part of your child’s nutrition, speech development, self-confidence and play a significant role in the placement of permanent adult teeth.

Without proper care and attention children can suffer from dental decay (cavities). Decay is caused when sugars in the mouth mix with plaque bacteria to create an acid that can destroy tooth enamel. The longer sugar is in the mouth, the more acid is produced, increasing the risk of cavities.

Dental decay is painful—it can lead to infection and tooth loss. Children with dental disease may also have trouble sleeping, difficulty concentrating and suffer emotional distress—feeling bad about the way they look.

Dental disease is not always recognizable. Pain is usually a sign there is a problem but very young children are not able to explain when they are in pain.

The good news is that dental disease is preventable. Establishing healthy habits from an early age, including regular dental exams, can start your child on the path to good oral health.

Set your child up for good dental health:

◾ Caring for the mouth starts early.

Begin by cleaning your baby’s mouth using a wet cloth and gently wiping the gums to remove any leftover milk or formula from the mouth. ◾ Brush your child’s teeth as soon as the first tooth appears and make sure you lift the lip to brush along the gum line. Young children cannot clean their own teeth. Brush for them when they are very young and with them as they grow older.

◾ Use a soft toothbrush. Choose an appropriate size for the age of the child. ◾ Make brushing fun and develop a routine: brush at a specific time (after a bath or before a book); in a specific location (mom’s knee); or with specific cues (music, counting). ◾ Use a small amount of fluoride toothpaste to protect the teeth from cavities. Children under the age of 3 should only use a smear (size of a grain of rice) while those over 3 can use a pea-sized amount. Encourage your children to spit out the toothpaste. ◾ Cavity-causing bacteria can transfer from your mouth to your child’s.

Avoid sharing soothers, toothbrushes or other items with your child. ◾ Regardless of age, discourage grazing on sugary foods and drinks throughout the day or overnight.

For instance, constant and slow sipping on milk-filled bottles or sippy cups with juice, keeps sugars in the mouth and can lead to cavities—fill them with water instead. ◾ Choose healthy snacks such as cheese, fruit or nuts. What’s good for the body is good for the mouth. ◾ The earlier a dental problem is found, the easier it is to fix. Check your child’s mouth and visit the dentist regularly. ◾ Look in your child’s mouth for signs of disease such as brown or yellow spots on the teeth. Other signs that your child may be suffering from dental disease include: trouble sleeping; difficulty concentrating; and, avoiding certain foods, such as cold drinks and foods.

What they mean is that during the surgical procedure they removed the tumour with a good margin of normal cells and that there are no cancer cells in your lymphatic system. So there is no further treatment recommended ie no chemotherapy or radiation. End of story.

Well that is the beginning of the story for naturopathic physicians. Cancer cells are microscopic and the body is making them every day. If your immune system is functioning well then these abnormal cells are sought out and killed before they have a chance to replicate into a larger mass. If your body has had a cancer tumour removed then your body’s milieu promoted the growth of these abnormal cells on some level. If you keep on doing what you have been doing then a cancer recurrence may be more likely.

Staff of the Centre for Aquatic Health Sciences are accustomed to bringing the marine environment into their facility in downtown Campbell River.

With a bit of funding help from the community, they may soon display that environment outside the building, as well.

CAHS is spearheading efforts to place a twoand-a-half-storey mural on the curved wall of the commercial building at 871 Island Hwy. The mural would feature an underwater theme highlighting species found in local waters.

“We walk by that wall every day,” said Tina Podlasly, CAHS office manager. “I think it’s a perfect spot for a mural downtown. Our specialty is fish, so I think it would be great if we could feature some of the sea life from this area.”

The idea for the mural emerged last summer, when CAHS first applied for funding through the City’s Downtown Facade Improvement Program.

Podlasly said CAHS envisions the mural being just the first in a three-phase enhancement that would include additional art on the building’s long, southfacing wall.

“It would be cool if we could get some school kids to work on the bottom section of that wall and put on something that would complement that curved wall.”

The not-for-profit CAHS, the only aquatic research facility of its kind in B.C., performs field and laboratory research in fish health and welfare, wild/farmed salmon interactions, epidemiology, stress physiology and environmental monitoring.

Interviewer: What services does The Home Guard provide?

Lawrence: Firstly, I look after peoples’ homes when they are away on business or holiday and especially holidays exceeding 30 days because that is the time that most insurance companies will not provide coverage due to the premises being vacant beyond 30 days. The Insurance Crime Prevention Bureau of B.C. stipulates that in order for the Insurance Policy to remain in effect the premises must be inspected at least every 2 - 3 days and a log must be maintained on the premises detailing when the premises were visited, what was checked, and how long the inspection took to complete and also the date and time. The Home Guard inspections are once every 24 hours as the company mandate is that all customers deserve the optimum service and also a lot can happen or go wrong if left for 2 - 3 days. I also ask the customer to make me the First Responder to any alarm trigger as that is crucial and I can get anywhere in the area between 15 - 30 minutes maximum in order to ascertain what is the problem.

Interviewer: Do you provide additional services?

Lawrence: Yes, for example if the customer wishes mail to be forwarded and or wants cheques deposited to their account, I charge only mileage and time for these additional services over and above the inspections. I also do seminars on personal safety, home safety, and vehicle safety as well as one on Rape Assault Defence for ladies who are required to go to or from work after dark. I also do security assessments for both residential and commercial premises at no charge and provide a written report as to recommendations as regards security and safety.

Interviewer: What has been your response so far in this area?

Interviewer: What is your background that you feel qualifies you to conduct such services?

Lawrence: I have been fortunate and privileged to serve with the R.C.M.P. and have prior military service and I have been involved in security work for 20+ years including my being the owner/operator of a security business on the lower mainland offering security guards, mobile patrols, guard dogs and executive protection commonly called “body guards” and I also worked as a volunteer on the downtown east side of Vancouver helping the homeless and the mentally ill “street people” who suffer terribly in the colder weather. I worked with the head of security for Marathon Realty in setting up a downtown security “net” for guards to assist one another in emergency.

Interviewer: Do you think that your services are needed in a smaller population base such as ours?

Lawrence: Yes, I do, because crime happens whether or not it is in a “city” and in fact, if you check with the Crime Stoppers and the R.C.M.P. and read your local paper, you will find ample evidence of break and enters, theft, vandalism, drugs, and even assaults right here in this wonderful community, I am sad to say, but bad things go on in smaller communities as well as cities.

Motorists are urged to take caution and be prepared for brief delays for a few more days as city crews and contractors patch pavement excavated during the water line replacement project this winter.

Paving is taking place in approximately 20 locations, most of them residential areas. “ T he s e are s ma l l patches, usually cuts

across the road,” said Drew Hadfield, the city’s transportation manager.

“There’s going to be traffic control in place for these locations, with minor disruptions.”

Hadfield said work in most locations would take just a matter of hours, with city crews prepping the sites and Tayco Paving, the contractor, providing the final paving service.

The work completes repair of pavement dug

out during water and sewer repairs done this winter, and replaces temporary patching.

“We can’t have paving until Tayco opens its paving shop, usually in late April or May,” said Hadfield. “Because we’ve had such mild weather, they were able to start earlier this year.”

Paving began Wednesday and was expected to continue into early next week before work at all locations is completed.

Living With Alzheimer’s

Finding help and overcoming fear

FIRST IN A SERIES Long time area resident Jocelyn Reekie and her husband Bill are a family dealing with Alzheimer’s Disease and wanted to bring the struggle out of the shadows and into public consciousness. So they have decided to write about their situation in an effort to inform and support anyone else who may be in similar circumstances.

few weeks ago, a woman I’ll call Jane knocked on my door.

She knew me and had read an article in the Mirror about the many benefits my husband and I have experienced since he began attending the Campbell River Adult Care Society program to give him more social interaction and stimulation to help allay the effects of his long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Jane said she was having problems with memory, she could no longer follow step-bystep instructions, and she often got lost when travelling to familiar places, but she didn’t know how or where to get help. She said she had not been able to tell anyone about her troubles because she was embarrassed, and afraid,

and no one understood.

She wondered if I could help.

Jane’s story is not unique. Nor is her fear.

When I began to realize my husband’s problems were symptoms of an underlying disease, it was not easy for me to talk about it. When I tried to tell our doctor I was afraid Bill might have dementia, the words seemed to get caught in my throat.

But the doctor instantly understood, and he immediately got the ball rolling for us to find out if that was indeed the case. It isn’t easy to tell someone you are afraid you, or someone you love, might have dementia. But the symptoms cannot be treated if they are hidden, and they cannot stay hidden.

Dementia is a disease that has become a worldwide pandemic.

According to the Alzheimer Society of Canada’s website, as of

65 or older were living with cognitive impairment, including dementia. Those numbers do not include Canadians under 65 who have the disease. My husband was diagnosed at age 58.

Because it has become a pandemic and is being discussed and studied throughout the world, people’s understanding of dementia has increased significantly.

There are various types of, and various causes for, it. TIAs or a series of small strokes, frontal

lobe damage, vascular disease, Seasonal Affective Disorder, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s are some. No matter the cause or type, many of the symptoms experienced by those suffering from dementia are the same. And services to help patients continue to live their lives to their fullest capabilities are in place.

The best first step to find help is to see your doctor and talk about exactly what is going on.

And in case you might

forget to mention everything that is happening, or find yourself unable to say the words, it helps to write down ALL the symptoms and give the doctor the list.

Metal jewellery to inspire North Island College’s Metal Jewellery program transformed Lena Collins’ ambitions and her ceremonial head piece.

The student, originally from Rivers Inlet, will be one of the Metal Jewellery Design certificate students whose work will be on display at NIC’s Metal Jewellery Open House – a free event, Thursday, April 16 at the Campbell River campus.

“I had no idea what to expect when I started this program,” said Collins, who moved to Campbell River from Rivers Inlet with her high schoolaged son. “But instructors here really encouraged me to put myself into each piece.”

For Collins, the idea that an instructor would

encourage her to bring her First Nations culture into the classroom was inspiring.

“It brought a change in direction in my life – just one instructor saying ‘do who you are’ was a transformational experience for me,” she said.

Collins is creating a copper, brass, and silver head piece to wear during celebrations in the Wuikinuxv Big House.

“It not only changed me, it changed the direction of my regalia,” she said.

She plans to return to Rivers Inlet and start an entrepreneurial artists collective with other wood carvers, painters, and engravers.

Collins also wants to talk to local grade school

students about art education.

“Once you create an idea or a goal it’s good to go back to your community and take it home,” she said. “It’s phenomenal what we learned in this program.”

NIC’s Metal Jewellery Open House allows students completing the eight-month certificate the opportunity to showcase their work – from delicate rings and pendants to Lena’s ceremonial head piece which she plans to display on her traditional regalia blanket.

Select student work will also be for sale at the event.

The Metal Jewellery Design Open House is an opportunity to meet

NIC’s artist instructors, learn about their passion for teaching, discover the specialized equipment and techniques used to craft metal jewellery, and tour the metal jewellery design studio in Campbell River.

Visitors can also learn more about the Metal Jewellery Design certificate as well as other jewellery courses and programs at NIC. The free event runs from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on April 16. Refreshments will be served and everyone is invited.

Kyle Jason Porter Nov. 11, 1980April 6, 2015 Kyle Jason Porter, 34, of Campbell River, B.C., passed away peacefully on April 6, 2015.He was born in Sarnia, Ont. on November 11, 1980.

Kyle loved his family and friends. And life.

Kyle's steadfast refusal to accept any limitations on what he could accomplish, his undiminished optimism, and his positive contribution to his family, friends and community will continue to provide inspiration to many as we reflect upon, and celebrate, his life.

Kyle is survived by his wife, Lena; his parents, Gary and Freda Porter; his sister, Kelley Packalen, and her husband, Mikko; his twin brother, Grant, and his wife, Christine Mok; his grandmother, Jopie Zylstra; his aunt, Marilyn Smith and her husband, Douglas; his aunt, Janet Leonhart and her husband Richard; his uncle, Derrick Zylstra; his father-in-law, Herb Hanson, and his wife, Maxine; his sister-inlaws, Sarah and her husband, Dustin; his step-brothers, Skyler and Matthew Meyers; and many nephews and nieces.

The participants will meet weekly to discuss the book: Falling Upward-A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life, by Richard Rohr.

The author is a wellknown American Franciscan monk who has based his title on the assertion by Carl Jung that our lives are lived in two halves: the first is concerned about making a living, looking

Discussions start on Monday, April 13,

By Rob Sass The Z06 Corvette option has typically had a single purpose: To humble would-be Corvette competitors foreign and domestic, offering supercar performance and handling at a price point that can’t be achieved by any other manufacturer!

Here are a few fun facts about the Corvette Z06: The first Z06 was built in 1963. The second-generation — or C2 — Corvette was the first to offer the Z06 package. Corvette godfather Zora Arkus-Duntov conceived the option package that mated Chevy’s fuel injected 327 V-8 with uprated brakes and suspension (and in most cases a larger, competition-ready fuel tank) to give privateer racers a leg up in competition during a time when GM couldn’t field a factory race team.

Secrets of the Corvette Z06

UP TO Simply called an RPO (“regular production order”) Z06, it was pricey and consequently selected mostly by owners who intended to take their Corvettes racing. Today 1963 “big tank” Z06s are among the most collectible Corvettes.

The option was dormant for 28 years.

There was no C3 or C4 Z06, and the name finally returned for 2001 in a very special C5.

Offered only in the most rigid and lightestweight hardtop body style, the 2001 model came with an LS6 small block rated at 385 hp. It was quickly uprated to 405 hp for the 2002 model year — as if the official ratings mattered. In a fine Corvette tradition going back to the 1967 L88, it was found that Chevy had underrated the horsepower significantly; north of 425 hp was closer to the truth.

The 2015 C7 Z06 is the first factory supercharged Z06 and the first to offer an automatic transmission. Reputable aftermarket suppliers like Mid America Motorworks have long offered various superchargers to Corvette owners who want a blower, but the 2015 Z06 is the first to come with a supercharger — and the accompanying wail — straight from the factory. Andy Stevens has options and with the Campbell River Storm’s season carr ying on towards the 2015 Keystone Cup — Western Canada’s Junior B championship — in Cold Lake, Alta., he isn’t prepared to make any decisions just yet.

The 6-foot-2, 208pound defenseman was a 2013 WHL Bantam Draft selection of the Kootenay Ice. With size and a smooth stride, it’s easy to see why the Ice scouting staff saw fit to use a fifth-round pick (98th overall) on the now 17-year-old native of Campbell River.

“If you didn’t know he was 16, you’d think he was a 20-year-old in our lineup,” said Lee Stone, Storm head coach and general manager. “He’s so strong. Our forwards consistently talk about how strong he is in the corners. He moves his feet. I think he’s going to be an exceptional player wherever he decides to play next year.

“He’s a real smart kid, so they’ve kept the school option there. I think it will come down to where he’s got the best opportunity to develop.

This year was good for him. Instead of being a six or seven [defenseman] on a higher-end team, he’s a number-one or -two on our club. It’s really served him well and I think he’s got pro

hockey written all over him. I think he’s going to collect a cheque to play the game one day. That’s the talent he has.”

Stone marvelled about Stevens’ drive and ability to think the game, two assets he believes will take his young blueliner to success. Where that success comes is still to be determined.

Having spent all his time in Junior B, with a cup of coffee at the Junior-A level, Stevens remains eligible to pursue the NCAA college hockey route and it’s an opportunity he’s weighing.

The soft-spoken rearguard didn’t attend Kootenay Ice training camp following his draft

year after breaking his wrist. He chose to play at home for the 2014-15 season and didn’t attend Kootenay Ice training camp once again, but with plenty of turnover coming to the Ice roster, next season might be the best chance for a young, efficient defenseman like Stevens to crack the lineup and make his mark in major junior — if he wants to go that route.

“It’s definitely an option. They’re a great organization,” Stevens said. “It would be great to play for them.

“Right after they drafted me, they gave me a call and we talked for a while.

“It’s tough [to decide].

You’ve just got to talk to people that know a lot about it and have experience going both routes.

You get their input about it.

“I’m just focusing on the season [with the Storm] right now.”

There’s no questioning Stevens can play the game and his presence has played a key part in the success of the Campbell River Storm this season.

As a 16-year-old, he graduated from the Okanagan Hockey Academy to suit up for the Storm, posting two goals and 17 points in 40 regular-season games. In 11 Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League playoff

Since 2004, the BCSPP has provided close to $1 million in grants annually to provincial and multi-sport organizations for programs that help increase participa-

tion in sport, particularly for under-represented and marginalized populations.

Storm’s Stevens in high demand

games with the Storm, Stevens went on to post five assists and followed up with one assist in four games last week at the 2015 Cyclone Taylor Cup — B.C.’s provincial Junior B championship — in Mission, where his squad claimed its second B.C. title in franchise history with a 6-5 victory over the Kimberley Dynamiters.

On top of his time with the Storm, Stevens earned looks from the Powell River Kings of the Junior A BCHL. Though he saw only eight games for the Kings, the youngster still earned himself a taste of Junior-A hockey and that isn’t something many

16-year-olds can lay claim to.

“You’ve got to be faster, stronger,” Stevens said of the taste he had in Junior A. “You’ve got to be able to make plays a little bit faster.

It was a great experience.”

Should Stevens decide he wants to pursue the NCAA college hockey route, his most likely destination next season will be in a full-time role with the Powell River Kings as a move to the Western Hockey League would nix his NCAA eligibility.

A velvety-smooth stride is the first thing most people notice about Stevens’ game, but at 6-foot-2 and 208 pounds, they might be left wanting a little more

grit and sandpaper. The physical side of the game is something Stone said they’ve been working on through this campaign.

“He’s smart and he’s physical, but he’s not necessarily in your face,” Stone said. “At 6-foot-2, 205 [pounds], that’s something you’d probably like to see a little more of. But it hasn’t held him back in our league as a 16-year-old and I’d be surprised if it held him back in any other league, too.”

For now, Stevens’ focus remains on finishing out the 2014-15 Junior B campaign — a season that has worn as long as it possibly can with the Storm headed to the Western Canadian

Junior B championships April 16 to 19.

“We have a great coaching staff and group of guys,” Stevens said. “We’re on the ice every day. We’re training hard and we’re a good team.”

If Stevens and the Storm take to the ice in Cold Lake the way they did in Mission, they might find an opportunity to make history — no Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League team has hoisted the Keystone Cup since its inception in 1983.

The Storm open the 2015 Keystone Cup in a date with the Saskatoon Quakers (Prairie Junior Hockey League champions) April 16 at 10:30 a.m. (PST).

Men’s Night swings into action at Storey Creek Dean Thulin started the year off right in Men’s Night play at Storey Creek Golf and Country Club by shooting a 3 under 33 in the season opener last Wednesday.
