RCMP redouble their efforts in 2010 double homicide investigation in forensic science, new and very viable leads have surfaced,” explained S/Sgt. Dubnyk. “These new leads have provided investigators with resurgence in the investigation with definitive direction in the search for Jeff and Leanne’s killers.” The investigation has never stopped but now several more police officers have been added creating a large dedicated team of investiga-

tors to following up new leads. This has included interviewing several new witnesses and reinterviewing some of

the original people with whom the police spoke. The investigative team has established a dedicated “Tip Line”

RCMP have set up a special tip line for information regarding the 2010 double murder of Jeffery Taylor and Leanne MacFarlane. The RCMP Southeast District Major Crime Unit and the Cranbrook RCMP detachment have stepped up the investigation into the homicides of Jeffery Taylor and Leanne MacFarlane. The senseless double murder occurred on May 29, 2010 at a rural residence approximately 20 kms east of Cranbrook. “This was a brutal and cowardly act of violence in what was determined to be a case of mistaken identity “stated S/Sgt. Dubnyk. Investigators have in-

terviewed hundreds of witnesses including several who indicated that two males were seen running/walking away from the crime scene along a section of Hwy 3 that lead from the couple’s residence. As the result of tireless investigative efforts, police have been successful in moving the investigation forward. “At the outset of the investigation, the forensic examination of the crime scene yielded a vast amount of evidence and now, as a result of advancements

the St. Mary’s Indian Band and the City of Cranbrook, after the two communities formally endorsed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) March 17, 2015. The MOU is a condition of the Province around the 2011 purchase of crown land by the City of Cranbrook next to the St. Mary’s River and River’s Crossing (former Shadow Mountain Development). Conditions also indicated that the land must be used for public park purposes and that the park be managed in collaboration with the St. Mary’s Band. “Aq̓amnik̓ pride themselves on being good stewards of the land; we are excited for this and future opportunities for Aq̓am and the City of Cranbrook to work together,” said Nasukin Jim Whitehead. “We are pleased to work alongside with the St. Mary’s Band to jointly manage St. Mary’s Park,” said Mayor Lee Pratt.

Restorative injection techniques

Arthritis is the most common cause of disability among people over the age of 55 affecting 10% of the population resulting in depression, loss of work and huge financial costs. Last week I started writing about RIT’s (restorative injection techniques) that can be used to stimulate healing of joint tissue and improve the symptoms of arthritis. Prolotherapy is an RIT that uses a solution of dextrose (sugar) and saline to stimulate ligaments to heal and promote joint stability. Another RIT called PRP (platelet rich plasma) is relatively new and being used to slow, or even stop the progression of arthritis. Unlike prolotherapy which is typically injected into ligaments, PRP is typically injected into the joint space where the platelets release large quantities of growth hormone which in turn stimulate healing.

While the evidence to date is new and incomplete, there is a strong suggestion that PRP slows the degeneration of joints. Arthritis typically results in the loss of about 10% of cartilage each year. MRI evidence before and after PRP shows that this injection technique stops this steady loss of cartilage. Patients report improvements in pain scores, flexibility and general mobility. PRP has also been found to help tendons heal which is an exciting finding as tendon injuries can be notoriously hard to nurse back to health. RIT’s are relatively safe, rarely causing a local infection from the injection or nerve irritation if the needle hits a nerve. Taken together, prolotherapy and PRP are important treatments that can be used to safely and effectively manage arthritis pain without drugs and surgery.

The Weekday View

Opinion: Tried and true economic boost by Brian Coombs The closure of the city’s Target store this past week was not something to laugh off, be dismissive of or apathetic about. It was devastating. It was harsh and it was something Canadian communities are unfortunately becoming used to. Remember when Sears was everywhere? For that matter, remember when Eatons ruled the urban centre, or even the great deals we used to get at Zellers? Analysts have pointed out that with a rapidly diminishing middle class, consumer meccas such as shopping malls, all of which containing an ‘anchor’ big box store are becoming a thing of the past. The only real growth in that kind of shopping experience has been with dollar stores, which does say something about what we choose to do with our meagre disposable income. These same analysts have also noted that cities with a broad base of services and industry will eventually be able to entice these large-scale shopping centres back. Of course, most of those analysts are talking about big cities. Here, in the East Kootenay and most of rural Canada, rural communities were formed around industry. Whether it was farming, the local lumber or pulp

mill, mining or a smelter, there was an identifiable economic driver in the area that prompted a community to spring up and gave people the income needed to go shopping. Just imagine what would happen to the Elk Valley economy should Teck decide to close the mines? People in Kimberley don’t have to imagine those kinds of consequences because it happened back in 2001. Its economy is still working its way back. So it is easy to say that the city needs to attract industry. And yes, a new industrial mover and shaker coming to the community would spur economic development and make it attractive to another big box store. But there is another, not as flashy but equally beneficial way to better the area’s economic outlook. In a recent conversation with David D. Hull, the new executive director with the Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce, he made a few key observations. He said if the Chamber, along with the City and local business could increase the bottom line of every business by 10 per cent, the cumulative effect would be astounding. Hull, along with the mayor of Kimberley, Don McCormick, also pointed out that the area could work harder to provide integrated ser-

vices to maximize what is already here. Excellent points. And while there is no way that the people in Cranbrook and area could have prevented Target from pulling out—corporate hubris and market ignorance made that inevitable— there is something we can do too. Again, it is not flashy or ‘out-of-the-box’, but it is a tried and true way to boost the economy. We can shop local. With the dollar the way it is, there is far less reason to go south of the border now anyway. Shopping online may offer niche products you may want, but these items can be found right here and you don’t have to wait weeks and pay shipping costs. Art and produce can be found in abundance at the local markets. Cars, clothing, technology and anything else you can think of can be bought right here. If it can’t, the local merchant (that lives and spends right here, too) can order it for you. Not flashy by any means, but a loyal and local, consumer base can do wonders for a city. Every dollar you spend here stays here and multiplies as it gets spent over and over. That said, big kudos for the people who came and checked out the Kootenay Women’s Show this past weekend. The vendors and distributors were happy to meet you and they are as local as it gets. Happy shopping.

Pee Wee hockey team provincial champs The Cranbrook Fraternal Order of Eagles Pee Wee Tier 2 Hockey team returns from Prince George as Provincial Champions. The team went undefeated in round robin action beating Prince George,

Port Moody and Fort St. John. They then went on to face Penticton in the semi-final before playing Burnaby Winter Club in the final. The Eagles would come back from 3-0 and 4-2 deficits to win the hock-

ey game 8-5. The Eagles also recently won the South Central Alberta Hockey League (SCAHL) Conference Championship and are in the midst of the SCAHL League Finals versus the Olds Grizzly’s. The team played two games in Olds on their way to the Provincial Championships splitting the first two games. The Eagles

will return to action for games 3 & 4 in the best of 5 series in Cranbrook at Western Financial Place on Friday, March 27th at 5 pm and Saturday, March 28th at 11 am. The team invites everyone to come out to their games this weekend to cheer them on as they try to win another championship.

Personals Dear people of Cranbrook: I was hoping to again ask for your help. There is a werewolf in my garden & he is eating my petunias & digging up my dead pets. Poor old fluffy, he was a good hamster but he spent to much time at his ninja classes & my samurai turtle Sam took him out just before he got the turtle, but enough about that, I was asking about help against the werewolf. He frequents the park near my house. Gyro Park has a werewolf in it that seems to like the swings & teeter tooters. He apparently has a thing for flowers but hates wolf’s bane, he leaves that alone. I need him gone. Hopefully the one who killed that red dragon can help me with this too. Will offer the same one million experience points plus another one million experience on top of it because the dragon slayer never claimed it and it could be yours. Just get rid of the werewolf for me.

Lost & Found Found: quad seat, possibly custom built, blew out of truck around Mount View & Parnaby road, call to describe. (250)426-4099

OBITUARY

Leonard Werden 1920 – 2015 Leonard William Werden was born in Fort Steele on November 6, 1920, and passed away peacefully in Fort Steele at the age of 94 on March 19, 2015. He grew up riding and breaking horses and started working as a summertime pony guide at the young age of 15 at Lake Louise, AB. Leonard left Fort Steele for the coast in 1938 where he soon enlisted in the Army-Engineer division in 1942. He married Lenore Wilson on January 5, 1946, and they raised 4 sons in Burnaby, where he worked for CPR and Dominion Bridge as a welder and fitter. In 1970 he left the coast and moved to Skookumchuk to build his retirement dream home which he did with no power tools – it was all by hand. Leonard lived between Skookumchuk and Creston, working on the family orchard, for many years. He was always busy and could fix and repair anything - the bigger the challenge the better. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 54 years Lenore Mabel Werden, 3 brothers George, Bob and Jimmy, 3 sisters Peggy, Viola and Veronica. Leonard, affectionately known as “Rab, leaves to mourn his loving partner Dorothy Lescanec, 4 sons: Leonard (Marilyn) Werden, Bob Werden, Gene (Linda) Werden and Ronald (Shelley)Werden; 11 grandchildren: Andrea, Leonard, Ryan, Jaylene, Shannon, Barbara, Robert, Bianca, Sasha, Niesje Dee, and Anthony, as well as 12 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. A memorial lunch will be held on Thursday, April 2, 2015 from 1:00 pm until 2:30 pm at McPherson Funeral Home in Cranbrook, with interment to follow in Fort Steele Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. Condolences for the family can be offered at: www.mcphersonfh.com

April 20, 1933 – March 25, 2015

Lillian was born in Dapp, Alberta to Mary and Richard Davies. The family moved to Vancouver in 1938 where Lil attended Little Flower Academy. She graduated from senior high and pursued her nursing career at St. Paul’s Hospital graduating in the class of 1955. In 1953 Lil met Garry, the love of her life. In 1968 Garry and Lil moved with their four girls to Kimberley where they started a business partnership at the Canadian Hotel. Lil went on to become a successful realtor with Lytle Agencies. After retiring from Holmes Realty in 1993 Lil was very active in sports, she loved curling, golf, badminton, and bridge with the girls. Lil was very involved with the community as President of the Chamber of Commerce and volunteered for numerous activities. In her later years Lillian enjoyed many happy summers at the family cottage at Wasa Lake watching her daughters raise their own families, playing with her grandchildren, and visiting with family and friends. She always loved to look at the Rocky Mountains from the deck, reminiscing with the love of her life, Garry, and friends and family that dropped by. Lillian loved to play a competitive game of bocce. Most of all Lil loved to have fun with all her family and friends, she loved to make people laugh with her quick wit humour. Lillian is survived by her husband Garry, her daughters Lee (Simon), Cathy, Kim (Brian), Kari (Noelle), her grandchildren Chelsea, Camille, Carling, Lauren, Nolan, her great grandson Matteus, and a large extended family. A funeral service will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 2:00pm on Wednesday, April 1st, 2015 in Kimberley, BC. Reception to follow at the Catholic Church hall. The family would like to extend an invitation for everyone to join them in celebrating Lil’s life. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the BC Children’s Hospital or the local food bank.

With an ever-increasing amount of interest in playing, the Sam Steele Ball Tournament has opened its early bird registration. A group of enthusiastic ball players took over the Sam Steele Ball Tournament in 2013 from the Cranbrook JCI with a vision to make the already successful event of 18 years into a “ball player’s tournament”, said Sam Steele Ball Chairperson, Seana Coolbaugh. The groups involved include: Cranbrook Minor Ball Association, Cranbrook Mixed Slopitch Association, Rocky Mountain Bandits and Cranbrook Men’s Baseball. An increase of 20% has been realized in just 2 years with 69 teams participating in 2014. The Sam Steele Ball Tournament has recently opened 2015 early bird registration for 3 divisions; Competitive, Intermediate and Fun Rec. All levels of ball players from novice to competitive compete in a fun weekend. The Fun Rec division will have prizing for best costumes as a team, as well as other prizes for fun things ie; most sportsmanlike. The Intermediate division will be a bracket tournament format with prizing for different categories as well. The Competitive division will still run in a round robin format with playoffs and cash prizing for the top 3 spots with a grand prize of $2000 for 1st place. With a four game guarantee, cash and merchandise prizes, draws, give-aways, apparel plus their own beverage gardens and concessions on location, the tournament is forecast to attain their highest participation level yet. “All funds raised go

back into the ball parks of Cranbrook” explains Seana. Over the past 2 years funds have supported a new batting cage at Confederation Park and bathrooms with storage up at Moir Park. This year’s funds will either go to new dugouts at Confederation Park or improve-

ments to the Quads with new bleachers or overhead shelters for spectators. The Sam Steele SloPitch tournament begins on Friday, June 19th coinciding with the Sam Steele Days community festival June 18th – 21st, 2015. Sam Steele Society representative, Laura

Kennedy is pleased with the SloPitch event’s success, “The ball tournament has a significant history as part of the Sam Steele Days festival. Its popularity contributes to our local economy and showcases our hospitality”. Sam Steele Days has something for everyone and each year

The Waneta Expansion Project offered a unique opportunity to work with the Ktunaxa Nation. A project of this scale required a large number of workers from a variety of trades. The Ktunaxa Nation was able to work with the owners to create employment opportunities for 13 Ktunaxa Nation citizens, including trades apprentices and journeymen.

At peak construction over 450 people worked directly on the project

Some Ktunaxa Nation workers shared their experience on the project: “Overall, I had a great time on the project. I met a whole bunch of people and made new friends. My time on the Waneta site gave me some amazing workplace experiences. I plan on going back to school to continue this learning experience I started in Waneta.” “I came onto the project early. It was tough being away from my family but the experience I received on the site, particularity working at great heights, has helped me greatly in my construction career.”

red You’re Hi

Ktunaxa Nation citizens received on-thejob training and education throughout the project. Many of those who were employed have chosen to continue their training that began on the Waneta Expansion Project. This collaboration between the Ktunaxa Nation and the project owners is a shining example of how organizations can come together to create employment and inspire lifelong learning.

Pro Drivers would like to congratulate Chelsea. She is now working for DCT Chambers out of Castlegar.
