Staircase and cycling challenge slated for September Sheri Regnier West Kootenay Advertiser

Historic stairways to West Trail and Columbia River landscapes will highlight a new race for local charities this fall.

The Red Roofs Duathlon, hosted by the Rotary Club Waneta Trail Sunrise and the High Altitude Triathlon Club will launch a one-of-a-kind competition Sept.

13, starting with a seven-kilometre foot race at Gyro Park.

The idea for a long distance challenge began one year ago when the Downtown Business Group approached Carol Currie, a West Trail resident and triathloner, about incorporating the staircases into a race that would introduce athletes from across the province and beyond to Trail.

“The person said, ‘Wouldn’t it be great to have a run using the stairs,” said Currie, an athlete who’s twice qualified for the Ironman Hawaii. “I was interested and started speaking with a fellow cyclist who is part of Rotary so it just all came together.”

Runners will head up to West Trail through a route of stairways, race past historic rock walls, and then run back to Gyro for a changeover to bicycles. Then the 40 kilometre road cycling begins through East Trail, up to Highway 3 and along the Columbia River to Columbia Gardens road. The cyclists will pedal back to Gyro to culminate the duathlon in a four km run towards Sunningdale before doubling back to the finish line at the park.

“The stairs are going to add a unique and challenging factor, and the cycling route we are using is already popular because it’s so beau-

tiful out there,” Currie added.

Sounds like a challenge, even for the locals who train to run distances.

Currie has been training with the High Altitude Triathlon Club since 2008.

From Rossland through Trail and out to Fruitvale, she and a group of about 20 athletes train for long distance endurance triathlons, which until now, require travel far outside the Greater Trail community.

The event is in the early planning stages, however volunteers and sponsorships are needed to make the duathlon a first class race.

“The downtown business association is very eager to help but we can always use more,” Currie said.

“We’ll need people to help with organizing aid stations, the post race lunch, and help with the registration papers. There are lots of things to do before hand and the day of the event.”

While the first year start up costs may factor into the fundraiser, any surplus will be donated to the Sanctuary Pre-Teen Centre and the Greater Trail Hospice Society.

That’s where the Rotary comes into play, says John Lake.

“We are starting from zero and may have to extend monies for service, equipment and things like that,” explained club President Lake, adding that the group is pursuing grant money to help cover costs.

“The fundraising will be primarily from the athlete’s registration fees, and we are hoping for 120 entrants, which will make the event self funding.”

The Rotary’s goal is to raise $2,000 as minimum for Sanctuary

She and members from the local triathlon club have partnered with the Rotary Club Waneta Trail Sunrise to highlight the features in a unique competition this fall called the Red Roofs Duathlon. Proceeds raised during the event will be donated to Sanctuary Pre-Teen Centre and the Greater Trail Hospice Society.

The partners are currently building a website to get word out about the race, which is a duathlon because there isn’t a local body of water large enough to support an aquatic leg.

“We are hoping to be sanctioned by the Triathlon BC website,” Lake said. “If we are, the race will be on their calendar which is Canada

and US-wide. So there’s a huge opportunity there to encompass a lot of athletes.”

Besides shining a spotlight on Trail and attracting new people to town, Lake noted the long-term vision is to promote healthy, active lifestyles for all ages.

If the stairs were stacked on top of each other, they would equate to 6,610 vertical feet, approximately two kilometres of stairway.

Columbia Basin Trust welcomes five new directors (Columbia Basin) – Columbia Basin Trust welcomes five new members to its Board of Directors and recognizes the contributions of the departing directors. It also wishes to acknowledge the reappointment of three current directors.

Oxygen Art Center celebrates poetry month Oxygen Art Centre is pleased to present the launch of K.L. Kivi’s first book of poetry on April 10th at 7pm during poetry month. Unknown Hum is Kivi’s first collection of poetry but the themes of her poems will resonate with those familiar with her work.

Unknown Hum explores the terrain of living a mindful life passionately engaged with the natural world and activist politics. “If my novels rise from my emotional self and my creative documentary from my mind,

my poetry reflects on the spiritual earth from which all my life’s work grows,” says Kivi.

“I will read poems as well as speak to the ways in which we can flourish as human beings in these challenging times.”

Kivi would like to reassure the poetry-shy that her poems are highly accessible.

Kivi is well-known throughout the Kootenays for her work on the Jumbo Wild! campaign, her work with the Sinixt Nation on issues of self-determination, as the editor and

publisher at Maa Press and as the author of eight books including The Inner Green , the novel Letter from Lubumbashi and the anthology The Purcell Suite.

Kivi will co-present the evening with Pemberton based author Katherine Fawcett whom is in Nelson to launch her latest book. The Little Washer of Sorrows is a collection of short fiction that explores what happens when the expected and usual are replaced with elements of the rare and strange.

The book’s emotional impact is created with strong, richly drawn characters facing universal issues in unusual settings. The collection is both dark and comical with engaging plot twists and elements of the macabre as characters attempt to cope with high-stakes melodramas that drift further out of their control.

Admission is by donation and everyone is welcome.

Backyard bird enthusiasts should regularly clean their bird feeders and bird baths at this time of year, as migratory songbirds return from their winter retreats.

Species such as pine siskins, redpolls and grosbeaks congregate in large flocks in spring, and their close contact at a time of weather stress and nutrition shortage can pass diseases from bird to bird, says a bulletin from the B.C. forests ministry.

Cleaning feeders every two weeks and changing water in bird baths every few days can reduce the spread of avian pox virus, avian conjunctivitis and salmonella bacteria among birds. Using metal or plastic feeders rather than wood, and

spreading out multiple small feeders that only allow one or two birds at a time also reduces the risk of disease transmission.

Wildlife biologists say these bird diseases can also spread to people handling infected birds or contaminated materials. Placing bird feeders over a concrete surface allows easier cleanup of litter underneath, which can also prevent spread of infection.

If you see one or two sick birds in your area, biologists advise clearing and scrubbing the feeder. If there are more than three diseased birds, take your feeder down for a week or two to encourage birds to disperse.

Kelowna resident Rick Kelly thinks Tesla has missed the boat with its Model S design, so he’s created his own sporty coupe version of the electric car.

Well, actually, the car-loving artist has created a digital version of what he calls a Model S 2+2-coupe concept.

Tesla has the performance in its electric Model S to be entertaining as a driver’s car. 2015 AJAC EcoRun: Putting consumers first

The rain is relentless and it’s cold.

But the miserable liquid sunshine couldn’t dampen the spirits of the group of nationwide journalists who gathered at the Jack Pool Plaza at the Vancouver Convention Centre to kick off the 2015 Automobile Journalists Association of Canada’s (AJAC) annual EcoRun. The EcoRun is an event that shows off a variety of eco-friendly vehicles, which include pure electrics, plug-in and conventional hybrids, hydrogen fuel cells, dieselfuelled powertrains and highly efficient gasoline options. Its purpose is to help inform consumers of these alternative options, as well as providing accurate road testing fuel economy numbers.

There’s no size limit on the vehicle either. Heck, we had a Ford F-150 in the pack, along with the midsize Chevrolet Colorado. The objective was to test a variety of vehicles – regardless of shape or size – and show that you don’t have to buy an all-electric vehicle to be eco conscious.

But speaking of all-electric vehicles, the Nissan LEAF was the

first of six vehicles I’d drive over the two-day test drive. This year, we ventured onto Vancouver Island through Horseshoe Bay, Nanaimo, Duncan, and Victoria and back through Tsawwassen.

With a full charge on the LEAF’s battery, I wasn’t having any range anxiety.

The trip to the ferry, and then to our first stop totalled a little more than 70 kilometres.

I started with 143 km on my “tank” and ended up with 63km.

As for real world figures, I used up about 80 km of range for a 70.1km trip. I did have the heated steering wheel and seat on, and had the heating on as well because, as I mentioned, it wasn’t warm! And there were a few hills on the way; all of which would deplete the battery more quickly.

Our first stop on the Island was at the Cowichan Regional Visitors Centre in Duncan. If you’re looking for things to do in the area, this is the place where you’ll get lots of great ideas. For example, those who love cheese will find that The Creamery at Cheese Pointe Farm has some incredibly delicious offerings. Or those who want some candied salmon look no further than Mad Dog Crabs.

And as a tea lover, TeaFarm, which is Canada’s only tea farm and offers multiple blends of flavourful creations. I could have stayed all day but duty called.

From there, our journey took us to Western Speedway in Victoria for a dynamic handling course.

That part of EcoRun was compli-

ments of the Chevrolet Colorado.

The front-wheel drive truck with a six-speed manual transmission did the job and did it well. From the speedway, our drive took us into downtown Victoria and the VW Golf TDI was my fiery chariot.

The next day’s activities would also keep us busy, with a press conference at the BC Legislature, then to Swartz Bay, through Steveston, BC for a fascinating tour of its history, and then finally

back home.

I’d have the opportunity to test the Ford Focus with the 1.0L engine, the Jeep Grand Cherokee with the EcoDiesel, and to finish up the day in style, I’d have the Acura RLX Sport Hybrid.

While the AJAC EcoRun wasn’t about crowning winners and losers – although, we were all vying for the coveted Green Jersey award at the end for most efficient driver – the real winners are

the consumers.

Not everyone is able to find a place in their home for an electric or hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, but there are gasoline and dieselpowered options that can easily fit into your lifestyle, no matter what kind of driving you do.

Sprinter is built for BC resource sector

British Columbia’s Monashee Mountains are renowned for their steep north faces and massive old-growth cedars.

While its rugged terrain is largely inaccessible by road, logging activities have given rise to a network of steep, roughly cut access roads, which the spring thaw recently converted to deep quagmires of confidence-sucking mud, rock, and debris.

What fool would attempt to drive a large commercial-style van up these routes of impending doom?

Me for one. Mercedes-Benz invited me to explore the capabilities of their Sprinter vans available with four-wheel-drive, or in Mercedes-Benz parlance: 4ETS. In the world of commercial high-roof vans, the Sprinter is the only one in Canada fit with traction at all four corners.

Known technically as 4-wheel Electronic Traction System, 4ETS is an option on V6 diesel-powered Sprinters, including the dual rear-wheel long wheelbase 3500 model. Expect to pay in the range of $6,000 for the feature, which can be paired with low-range gearing and downhill descent control for those seeking to maximize the Sprinter’s off-road fortitude.

4ETS is driver-activated as needed via a dash-mounted switch. When the grit of four-wheel-drive isn’t necessary, the setup enables optimal fuel-economy by returning

the vehicle to rear-wheel-drive, thereby reducing fuel-robbing mechanical drag.

While active, 4ETS splits torque 35/65 frontto-rear. This ratio doesn’t change though traction-control and stability-related programs remain active to improve grip and increase safety. These programs can be disabled should the driver require the ability to spin the wheels in an effort to unglue a stuck Sprinter.

Keeping one’s right boot deep into the Sprinter’s turbocharged throttle enabled its four wheels, clad in winter tires, to keep digging for traction while spitting out congealed mud and deleterious earthen material in an effort to supply forward propulsion. And it worked.

We battled ruts so deep that the entire underside of the van banged and shuddered viciously as rocks and buried tree limbs from former logging operations did their best to impede progress.

The ride-height of 4ETS-equipped Sprinters is increased by 75 mm (3-in) at the rear and 100 mm (4-in) at the front, which improves

the vehicle’s approach and departure angles while also imparting a 24-inch wading depth.

Interestingly, I didn’t find the additional ride-height detrimental to highway driving. The Sprinter felt exceptionally well anchored to the road and remarkably secure on its winter rubber, even at high-speed on backroads of broken, patchy pavement.

As the only game in town when it comes to four-wheel-drive commercial vans, Mercedes-Benz is keen to roll its high-traction Sprinter into industries such as mining, logging, construction, and any other work environment located off the beaten path –

and that’s huge in a resource-based province like B.C. The long-chassis Sprinter 3500 with dual rear wheels could easily serve as a rolling workshop for trades’ people needing access to work camps where four-wheel-drive wherewithal is essential.

Mercedes-Benz will also equip the passenger version of their Sprinter with 4ETS. Ski resorts and lodges, such as the Monashee Lodge, will undoubtedly appreciate the expanded capability. The recreational market is another niche ripe for off-road performance. rgrothwell@telus.net

There is a growing trend for more exclusivity and personalization in the high-end car market.

Owning a prestige nameplate is just the beginning for some wealthy buyers who crave a closer, more personal connection with the vehicle they drive. BMW now offers these buyers an opportunity to consult directly with its designers, at DesignworksUSA, to help them achieve the one-of-a-kind creation they crave, directly from the factory.

“It’s been said that 80 per cent of consumer purchase choices are based on colour. I like to go with that, as it makes me feel more secure in my job,” said Alexandra “Sandy” McGill, Lead Designer of Color, Materials and Finish (CMF) at DesignworksUSA. She was in Vancouver for the opening day of the Vancouver International Auto Show.

It serves as a creative collaborator and has played a key role in shaping the appearance and personality of MINI and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, in addition to modern BMW. past two decades dividing her time between design studios in Los Angeles and Munich. More recently she has also been spending time in China at a new design studio that DesignworksUSA has opened in Shanghai.

Working with external clients, McGill has developed colour strategies for consumer, medical and aviation industries. Consumer products include Nilfisk vacuum cleaners, HP printers and Varian Medical Systems. Aviation strategies include Embraer and Pilatus. She also designed a top-selling carpet collection for Lees Carpet.

Her first assignment at DesignworksUSA, in 1991, was colour and trim for the BMW E2 electric car, which was shown at the Los Angeles Auto Show. For the 2003 re-launch of the

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars brand, McGill used her aviation-honed expertise of luxury materials to conceive the interior and exterior colours, materials and finishes for the Phantom. Her work for MINI debuted at the 2005 Frankfurt Auto Show with the MINI Concept Car and was integral to the development of the 2007 MINI Coupe colours and trim.

BMW offers two levels of factory prepared buyer personalization called Individual Collection and Individual Manufaktur. A buyer can arrange to pick up their newborn personalized designer auto, at the factory gates, in Munich and have it shipped back to Canada later.

Available through a BMW dealer, the Individual Collection program gives a buyer access to an exclusive line of paints, materials and colour choices. Inspired by the citrine gemstone, the metallic paint finishes offered use a fine Xiralic pigmentation in colours ranging from gold dust through to a dark olive black.

Individual Collection interiors offer a selection of fine-grain Merino

leathers with inlaid piping and contrasting stitching. These come in a spectrum of colours that ranges from Opal White through to Cashmere, Gold Brown or Black. The wood trim used is taken from a single log, to ensure a high degree of uniformity.

Individual Manufaktur allows a BMW buyer to create a truly bespoke automobile, and it’s where McGill and her team at DesignworksUSA get actively involved.

They will work with a client and can provide personal colour selection, including two-tone compositions. A buyer may also decide to add more leather or even a personal monogram inlay, which can be added to head restraints and other elements.

The wide selection of trim materials available includes precious metals, such as sterling silver.

Road games and musical memories

The first time I drove on public roads, I was at the wheel of my then-boyfriend’s Chevy Vega.

I remember cresting a hill and gasping sharply with the realization that I was in control. The curvy road splayed out far below wasn’t some carnival ride with someone else at the helm. I couldn’t just close my eyes and wait for the terror to subside. It was up to me.

I could coast down and weave gently through the corners or I could squeeze the throttle and feel the rush of acceleration and adrenaline. As a sixteen-year-old living in a small town, driving meant autonomy.

There were plenty of road trips growing up. I remember long hauls from Toronto to North Carolina and Florida with my dad driving. After he and my mom

left Italy, they seemed to have an urge to see the new continent they now called home. Driving, I think, satisfied their curiosity about the world that they wanted to share with us.

When we moved back to Europe for a three-year period during my early teen years, the family would venture out each Sunday in our Peugeot 504 to discover a new region. Mom would be in the passenger seat with the maps and my baby brother asleep on her lap.

There was always music on those road trips. Music and road trips go together like American interstate highways and bad coffee. Music motivates, keeps you alert and adds to the euphoria of the open road.

Some of my fondest memories are of singing with my sister in the back seat of the Peugeot on the winding roads of Central France. Before iPads, iPhones, in-car entertainment systems and satellite radio, there was,

Beatles’ songs, ‘Michael, row your boat ashore’, and trying to remember all the words to ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’.

Road games involved spotting license plates from other countries, identifying makes of vehicles and fighting over whose turn it was to be a leaning post for sleeping baby brother, now in the back seat.

I’ve always been interested in cars, roads and travel.

I love the growl of a revving eight-cylinder engine. A transport truck rolling down the highway at night all lit up just like a small city still gets me excited. I just never imagined that those things would be so engrained in my work and in my life. With our automotive event planning business, most days of the year, my husband Garry Sowerby and I are on the road.

It was this love of the road that brought us together. We could both relate to the words of Jack Kerouac in his classic ‘On the Road’: “… we were leaving confusion and nonsense behind and performing our one noble function of the time, move.”

Our first date was a five-hour return drive to a ‘little spot’ my suitor knew. It must have worked. That was 17 years ago. Being ‘on the road’ is when our best scheming takes place.

It’s romantic, soul-cleansing and gives us a sense of the wider world.

What about driving, though, actually

gripping the wheel and pushing the throttle? Forget the destination, the freedom of movement, the road trip, the music. What is driving?

It’s that feeling that I got as I whipped a Porsche Boxster S around the tight-tight corners at a racetrack, squeezing through coned gates, powering down straight stretches and hearing the resonant instantlyrecognizable growl of a Porsche engine. I had never driven faster, with such abandon yet with such intense concentration.

Or maybe I did. The 200 km/h reading on the digital speedometer of

the Cadillac ATS I was driving on the back straightaway of one of the fastest, most challenging tracks in North America, Mosport, still flashes in my dreams.

None of this compares to driving my very own car, a pristine white 1999 Volkswagen Golf GTI VR6. When I bought it, I knew there were two extra cylinders under the hood than the Golf GL version and that it had an additional 57 horsepower. But when I drive it, I don’t think about horsepower, torque, or fuel economy.

Ten favourite Camaros

As we await the arrival of the sixth generation Chevy Camaro, let us look back at some favorite Camaros from each generation.

FIRST GENERATION 1. 1967 Yenko Camaro — Don Yenko essentially ran a kick-ass speed shop out of his family’s decades-old Cannonsburg, Pa., Chevrolet dealership. Yenko replaced the car’s factory 396 V-8 with a Corvette L-72 427 that put out well over 400 gross horsepower. They went on to become among the most feared and (later) the most valuable muscle cars from the first

golden age of automotive performance.

2. 1968 Camaro Z/28 — If the big-block Yenko Camaro was a straight-line drag strip specialist, the Z/28 was the first-gen Camaro that you wanted to take on a road course. Its small-block 302-ci engine was essentially a 327 block with the crankshaft from the old 283 V-8. It made for one of the most entertaining and revhappy pushrod V-8s of all time.

SECOND GENERATION 3. 1970 Camaro Z/28 — The all-new second generation Camaro bowed for the 1970 model year complete with a fastback design and some styling cues borrowed from one of the best, the Fer-

rari 250 Short-Wheelbase Berlinetta of 1964 (Camaro would appropriate the name “Berlinetta” too, but we’re getting ahead of ourselves). The new car was an even better performer. 4. 1979 Camaro Z/28 — The 1979 Z/28 looked fantastic with a new front spoiler and NACA duct hood. And while 175 hp doesn’t sound like a lot, the early 1970s change from SAE gross to net horsepower made it look worse than it was. The 1979 Z/28 remained a sharp handling and by-nomeans slow car. Values have roughly doubled in the last five years. continued on page A14

THIRD GENERATION 5. 1982 Camaro Z/28 Indy Pace Car — The ’82 pace car wasn’t about performance as much as looks. Nice examples are rare, but when they do show up, they are bargains, trading for well under $13,000.

6. 1990 Camaro IROC- Z convertible — One of the biggest things to happen was the introduction of the first convertible since 1969 (courtesy of American Sunroof Corporation) just in time for the Camaro’s 20th anniversary. Fantastic examples still trade for under $20,000.

FOURTH GENERATION 7. 1997 Camaro SS LT4 30th Anniversary SLP coupe — SLP Engineering (which stands for “Street Legal Performance”) followed the Yenko formula of 30 years earlier and grabbed one of the hottest Corvette engines (in this case the 1996 Grand Sport LT4). With wheel, tire and suspension upgrades to go with the balanced and blueprinted 330-hp LT4, the car cost about $18,000 more than the next hottest SS Camaro of the same model year. Buy one today for 50 grand.

8. 2002 Camaro SS 35th Anniversary convertible — The F-body went out of production in 2002 (by then it was being produced only in GM’s Sainte-Thérèse, Quebec, plant) but at least it went out with a bang—the 325-hp SS went like stink.

FIFTH GENERATION 9. 2010 Transformers Special Edition Camaro —Brilliantly announced at the 2009 San Diego Comic-Con, fewer than 2,000 were produced exclusively in Rally Yellow with black stripes and Autobot badges that were strategically placed. The Transformers edition is by far the best-recognized Camaro of all time and a surefire future collectible.

10. 2014 Camaro Z/28 — Like the original Z/28 that cleaned up on road courses in the SCCA Trans Am series, the new Z/28 has track star written all over it. With extra-careful attention paid to light weight and aerodynamics, the car is able to put to good use on the track its huge Brembo brakes, Pirelli P Zero tires on 19” wheels and 500-hp, 7-litre V8- (that’s 427 cubic inches to Chevy big block fans).

Alexandra Straub For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, she has loved cars. She can even remember thinking at the age of six, “Only ten more years until I can get my licence!”

Born in Zurich, Switzerland to Hungarian parents, she moved to Canada when she was just a baby.

Spending her summers in Budapest with her grandparents helped cultivate a strong liking for motorsports. Alexandra can remember watching F1 races with her grandfather, and still does even when she goes to visit.

Over a decade ago, Alexandra started her career in the automotive industry. Since then, she has had countless stories and photos published. You can find her work online, in newspapers, magazines and on television. She has hosted “Shifting Gears Automotive TV” and regularly makes appearances on various shows talking about, you guessed it, all things automotive.

When she’s not testing out the latest in vehicular goodness, you’ll either find her on a motorcycle (she tests and writes about those, too), on a track or traveling the world.

While she considers her “job” her hobby, Alexandra enjoys other activities that don’t necessarily involve wheels, engines or motors. Growing up on the North Shore of Vancouver, she loves the mountains and the ocean. An avid snowboarder and a wannabe surfer, count on her enjoying the outdoors when she has the chance. And to really help her relax, she scrapbooks.

Bob McHugh For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, I’ve been writing about cars for over 25 years and I’m a long-term member of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). My auto background is mainly in the service side of the industry as I’ve always had a keen interest in knowing how things work. Especially those oily, greasy parts that make the wheels go around.

My first car was an early sixties Triumph Herald Coupe (web example photo) that was traded-in to a dealership where I worked as an apprentice auto mechanic, back in Dublin, Ireland. It spent more time off the road, being repaired, than on the road, during my time as its owner.

A Herald had the same chassis and a similar powertrain as the much nicer looking Triumph Spitfire, which was sold in North America.

At the BC Automobile Association I initially worked as a mobile Vehicle Inspector in the Vehicle Inspection Service. The vehicle was an AMC Gremlin and it was painted to look like a cut-away or skeleton view of the car’s mechanical bits. A small car with a big gas-guzzling engine, a Gremlin was an odd choice of vehicle for that job and the paint job just added to its weirdness, yet I grew to like it.

Currently I enjoy serving on the AJAC Technology Awards panel and have also been involved in the promotion of trade skills training for young people in BC. When time permits, I still like to get my hands dirty and give my son a helping hand with, his pride and joy, a 1966 Ford Thunderbird coupe. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

Former MLA details battle with prostate cancer Former Nelson-Creston MLA Corky Evans opens up about his fight with prostate cancer in the spring issue of Forward magazine, a publication of the BC Cancer Agency.

Evans’ results were first flagged after a routine exam in his late 40s, but a decade went by before he was diagnosed with a “moderately aggressive” cancer.

He “begrudgingly” agreed to a surgical consultation and underwent brachytherapy, which involves the insertion of radioactive seeds next to cancer cells.

Weekend of curling in the Kootenays 50 years of the Rocker Reynolds mixed bonspile The Grand Forks Curling Club played host to the 50th anniversary of the Rocker Reynolds mixed bonspiel on this past weekend.

Twenty-four teams from throughout the Kootenays and the Okanagan competed in this three-event bonspiel, which started on Friday and wrapped up Sunday afternoon.

Taking top spot in the A event was the Gagne rink from Grand Forks: Dalton Gagne, Rae Salkeld, Carol Large and Doug Noren.

Call for Entry: Artists/Heritage Venues Columbia Basin Culture Tour — August 8-9, 2015 Registrations are being accepted for artists/venues in the Columbia Basin to participate in the 7th annual Columbia Basin Culture Tour (CBCT), a celebration of culture taking place August 8-9, 2015 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The CBCT is a self-guided tour showcasing local arts, culture and heritage offered at no charge to the general public. “Arts” includes visual, written, performing, media and inter-arts! Participating as a venue allows you to really connect with locals, develop a wider audience, educate the public about what you do, market your activities, and attract visitors to your community.

The CBCT allows visitors to meet the participants “behind the scenes” and allows them to: visit artists’ studios that may not regularly be open to the public, purchase works directly from the artists, visit art galleries, museums and cultural centres to view special interpretive displays, archives, demonstrations or performances. It is also a chance for them to meet the people behind the scenes that are such a vital part of our local culture.
