A group of about twenty people gathered Tuesday on Columbia Avenue to mark the one year anniversary of the changes to federal health

transfer payments. Representatives from the Hospital Employees’ Union, BC Nurses Union, and BC Government Employees Union were present.

According to the HEU, “The rallies in Castlegar are a part of a multi-city, national day of action

drawing attention to the $36 billion in reductions in federal health care transfers over the next decade to BC and other provinces.”

within the company,” she added.

However, with no comments permitted from current employees, it is unknown whether or not any are happy and willing to be moved.

“The decision doesn’t reflect on the profitability of the branch,” Anaka said. “It was made to ensure we deliver our products and services in the most effective and efficient ways to our customers.”

The man accused of robbing several local financial institutions and a gas station last year at gunpoint is expected to plead guilty to eight charges.

Andrew Zacharias Stevenson is scheduled to admit to the crimes during his next court appearance in Nelson on April 28.

He originally faced more than 20 counts, but Crown prosecutor Sunday Patola said Stevenson will plead guilty to the major offences, including two counts of robbery, two counts of using a restricted or prohibited gun in a robbery, two counts of using an

imitation firearm, plus break and enter and unlawfully discharging a firearm.

The charges relate to hold-ups at Johnny’s Groceries and Gas in Robson on March 7, 2014, Kootenay Savings in Castlegar on March 11, 2014, Kootenay Currency Exchange on April 11 in which a shot was fired, and Nelson and District Credit Union on April 25. Stevenson was arrested after the latter robbery following a police chase.

Recently the Nelson Police Department was cleared of any wrongdoing in the hip injury Stevenson suffered after jumping from a bridge to escape.

Stevenson’s intention to plead guilty follows a preliminary hearing that began in

late January. He has been in custody since his arrest, and is presently serving a fivemonth jail sentence for an attempted escape prior to a court appearance in Nelson last September.

Stevenson’s co-accused, Krista Ann Kalmikoff, was ordered to stand trial at the conclusion of her preliminary hearing Tuesday, but a date has not been set. BC author Tania Millen is coming to Castlegar to promote her new book Pack Em Up, Ride Em Out: Classic Horse Pack Trips in British Columbia and Alberta. Millen will be presenting a free talk and slideshow “How to Plan a Pack Trip” at Chances Casino on April 17 at 7 p.m.

Millen has been horse back riding since she was ten years old. She spent a lot of time in competitive performance riding, but also loved hiking and spending time in the bush. She determined that when she was done with competitive riding, she would combine her passions and take on the challenge of packing trips.

“Six years ago I took a one-week course. By day three of the course I thought, I can’t possibly learn all these new skills and not go packing. So a couple of weeks later I did my first pack trip and I have been hooked ever since.” And so began Millen’s adventures.

When Millen began doing horse pack trips in western Canada she encountered a problem with finding information on the trails. “I had not planned to write 2.83 x5” a book. Trying to find out where to go and do pack

trips was really challenging. There is no guide book in Canada for pack trips.”

Millen received a multitude of inquiries following the publishing of several articles on her journeys, so she decided to translate her knowledge into a book.

Pack Em Up, Ride Em Out covers fourteen multiday horse pack trips. The guidebook covers all the details necessary to plan a successful trip including directions to the trailhead, length and difficulty, permit requirements, camping and grazing areas, maps, photographs and historical anecdotes.

Millen’s favourite rides are in the Rockies. “I love the Rockies because you start at higher elevations.

These trails are made for horses and they were made by horses.”

The closest ride to Castlegar is the Mount Assiniboine trail. “That’s an awesome trip.” said Millen.

“It is six days. It’s a loop ride. It’s suitable for your first pack trip. The views are spectacular, it is very straightforward.”

The event is organized by Rick Filmore of the Backcountry Horsemen of BC, Kootenay chapter. Of her new book, which will be available for purchase at the event, Millen said, “I hope it inspires people to go out a give it a whirl.”

Easter is coming!

Impacts of Columbia River Treaty

Examining alternative power options in the wake of the Columbia River Treaty

You may have heard about the Columbia River Treaty recently.

That’s because for the first time, this 50 year old treaty between the United States and Canada can be modified, renewed, or terminated. The treaty was initially signed to provide energy and flood protection for both countries. This agreement has had enormous impacts on residents of the Kootenays, both good and bad. The dams provide a large economic boost to the area, they create emission-free energy, and they have protected areas like Trail from experiencing extreme floods. The dams have also been a detriment by submerging arable lands, altering fish passage, and disrupting ecosystems.

In exchange for water storage in Canadian reservoirs, the BC government receives 50 per cent of the revenue from the power generated by the American dams.

Some of that money makes its way back to the Kootenays, most notably through a fund that was created in 1995 called the Columbia Basin Trust. But do these monetary benefits outweigh the negative social, environmental, and cultural impacts?

The effects on freshwater fish

are one of the most obvious ecological impacts. The dams have affected the flow of nutrients, which has had negative impacts on the populations of species such as Kokanee salmon and Rainbow trout. Fluctuating water levels also have negative impacts on lake spawning fish like Rainbow, and stream spawning fish like the Kokanee.

The creation of reservoirs in the Kootenays has submerged large areas that were once productive agricultural and culturally important lands. Entire communities, such as Edgewood, were displaced by these dams, and many First Nations cultural grounds were lost without any consultation with those peoples.

The dams of the Kootenays provide over 7400 MW of power-- roughly 10 times more than Kootenay residents use. There is big demand worldwide for energy and we know that the creation of dams comes with impacts. The province continues to look at creating more dams to meet those demands, but are dams the best way to generate energy?

Wind energy is the fastest growing alternative energy source out there, with BC getting its first two wind farms in the past 5 years. Wind farms in the Kootenays would have to establish nearly 2500 turbines to create the same power output as the current working dams.

The turbines need to be built away from buildings and be in highly windy areas. Access roads, transmission lines, and roughly 350 cubic meters of concrete are also needed per site to host a turbine. Matching the energy output

of all dams with wind would cost approximately $11.6 billion. Although wind power is a no-emission and no-waste energy source, there would be a considerable physical foot print and a large price tag.

Solar energy is another hydroelectric alternative, one that looks quite promising for the Kootenays. We have 30 per cent more sunshine than Berlin, and Germany acquires 50 per cent of its energy from solar cells. The most environmentally sensitive way to do this would be solar panels installed on roofs. The costs of these solar panels can vary greatly, but upkeep costs are minimal and could eventually pay for itself.

To match the hydroelectric energy the dams create would require small projects on many rooftops or to establish large scale solar farms that would have a much larger footprint.

There are also other forms of non-renewable energy resources.

One example is thermal coal, although there are currently no coal burning power stations in BC. This form of energy is very high in carbon emissions. Another energy source is nuclear, however, currently BC has a policy of no nuclear power.

Even though the dams have had great environmental and social impacts on the Kootenays, they cannot be easily replaced.

The dams also provide cheap energy, and are not as environmentally harmful as some energy sources such as coal. While our energy needs are currently met with the dams, for future supply perhaps it is time to look a little harder at the alternatives.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Because of domestic and global events way back in April of last year I felt compelled to run in the federal election. My platform has been in the public domain since mid-December of last year.

The main purpose of this candidacy is to offer Canadians an alternative to the bankrupt and dying City of London/Wall Street Banking Empire and the desperate British/US/NATO axis’ unjustified and unwarranted war drive against Russia and China. The underlying issue and critical imperative of my policy platform is for Canada to align with the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) nations and to join the Chinese initiated (AIIB) the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.

The AIIB, and the BRICS New Development Bank are just two of a number of new multi-lateral financial institutions which are intended to promote collaboration on economic development among sovereign nations.

This commitment to infrastructure projects will boost physical trade between nations and benefit the entire world.

Importantly, this multi-national cooperation serves as a much needed war avoidance strategy.

nations have joined this new AIIB financial mechanism for development, with European nations Germany, France, Italy and Canada’s mother country Britain having just joined over the last week. It is all but certain that Austria, South Korea and Australia will submit their application for founding member status before the March 31 deadline.

Obviously these countries and a growing number of nations are acting on this opportunity, realizing the merit of this key plank in my platform offered to Canadians. So, where is our government in what is a profound shift in international financial affairs?

Where are the Liberal and NDP voices at this pivotal juncture in the global political economy? It would appear that the two opposition parties are not really in the loop, they aren’t up to speed!

Does our Canadian government have any interest in promoting world peace and global development? It would appear Stephen Harper is consumed in promoting the two main planks of his party’s platform, fear mongering and war mongering.

he other night a few of us were at dinner at a friend’s place. As happens, a number of topics came up—not the least being the wild turkeys that live in Castlegar.

Several couples had seen a line of turkeys crossing Columbia Avenue and had stopped to let the whole group pass. Someone thought there should be an open hunting season so we could get rid of them. Someone else said the young ones were quite good eating as he’d managed to shoot one outside of Castlegar.

Eventually, the topic shifted to groups of birds and groups of animals. Someone knew that a group of geese was called a “gaggle” of geese and a group of crows was called a “murder” of crows. So the big question: What was a group of turkeys called?

A few suggested it was called a “gobble” of turkeys, but no one knew for sure.

It turns out that a group of turkeys is either a “rafter” of turkeys or a “gang” of turkeys or a “posse” of turkeys. Why these particular collective nouns should attach themselves to this group of birds, I have no idea. The one I’m leaning toward is a “gang” of turkeys because they nearly always hang together.

Some of these group names I know from other contexts. For Pam Malekow Office Manager

example, a “parliament” of owls I’ve known for awhile because “A Parliament of Fowls” is the title of a book of poems by Geoffrey Chaucer, the great 14th Century English poet. I knew about a “covey” of partridge because of my youthful hunting days, and somewhere I picked up the group name for lions—a “pride” of lions.

What you discover as you ramble through these group names is that often the names represent a characteristic or feature of the animal or bird. We have all seen videos of otters, so I thought the group name might be a “slide” of otters. It turns out they’re called a “romp” of otters. Rhinoceroses are a “crash” of rhinos, and leopards are a “leap” of leopards.

often than any other is a “murder” of crows. That’s because we have so many crows cawing their way around our neighbourhoods. And in the early spring, they feast on the young of smaller birds. In fact, they murder them if they find the fledglings just leaving the nest and learning to fly. Similarly, a group of ravens is called an “unkindness” of ravens.

Quite a few animals and birds have the standard “herds” or “flocks” or “nests” or “colonies” linked to them. But I like the ones that are different such as a “parade” of elephants or a “zeal” of zebras” or a “tower” of giraffes.

This last one is perfect.

wasps to a “plague” of locusts to a “scourge” of mosquitoes to a “bite” of midges, we sense in the collective noun what people think about these creatures.

In every park where I’ve seen peacocks, they strut and display their colours. So it’s not surprising that a group of peacocks is an “ostentation” of peacocks. If we can believe the English poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, skylarks make much joyous noise while flying high above the earth. So again, it’s not surprising to find an “exultation” of skylarks.

We humans have a lot of these group names, too. Just think, we have an “army” of soldiers and a “mob” of people and a “gang” of friends—all part of the herd instinct.

Re: “Name calling undermines activism,” March 26 In my lifetime I have been called many names over my concern for the social, environmental, political and economic issues which have arisen in Canada. At one point the BC government labelled me as a member of a “special interest group” (e.g. a teacher, a senior citizen). As Canadians we have not only the right, but it is our duty to hold our elected representatives accountable for the policies they pursue and the legislation they enact on our behalf. I am prepared to do this even if it means standing shivering for an hour on a cold rainy Saturday afternoon in Spirit Square in a crowd of over a hundred others who were similarly driven to express their desire for accountability.

And guess what, the government is now being forced to respond to the countrywide protest movement of which we were a part.

Canadian Cancer Society’s Daffodil Month Betsy Kline Castlegar News

Volunteers were out selling bundles of daffodils this weekend as part of the Canadian Cancer Society’s Daffodil Month fundraising campaign.

Fresh cut flowers for the campaign have been arriving each spring in communities since the 1950s and the daffodil has become a well known symbol of the fight against cancer.

Over 700 daffodils were sold at No Frills on Saturday. Volunteer Joy Harford said, “I had the best day selling daffodils

in six years. The location was wonderful and the people were just amazing.”

Door-to-door daffodil sales will be conducted in Castlegar throughout the month of April and table sales will be held Saturday, April 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ferraro’s and WalMart.

Daffodils for the local sale come from Vancouver Island and are of superior quality.

Money raised during Daffodil Month helps local patients living with cancer and their families. Donations fund lifesaving research, support services and other im-

Beef Tenderloin Steaks with Port Reduction and Blue Cheese Ingredients

4 (4-ounce) filet mignon steaks, trimmed 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper Cooking spray 3/4 cup port or other sweet red wine 2 tablespoons jellied cranberry sauce 2 tablespoons fat-free, less-sodium beef broth 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon black pepper 1 garlic clove, minced 2 tablespoons crumbled blue cheese

1. Heat a large cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Sprinkle steaks with 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper; coat steaks with cooking spray. Add steaks to pan; cook 4 minutes on each side or until desired degree of doneness. Remove steaks from pan; keep warm.

2. Add port, cranberry sauce, broth, 1/8 teaspoon salt, 1/8 teaspoon pepper, and garlic to pan, scraping pan to loosen browned bits. Reduce heat, and cook until liquid is reduced to 1/4 cup (about 4 minutes). Serve steaks with sauce; top with cheese, and serve with asparagus or a green salad.

Huber is joined in the 2015-2016 recruiting class by Hurry, the younger brother of former Saints’ standout goaltender Chris Hurry.

Standing at 6-foot-6 and 215 pounds, Hurry joins the Saints after playing 148 games on the blueline in the KIJHL. Hurry will bring a dedicated work ethic both in academics and athletics to the Saints program.

“Nelson is a great teammate and hard worker,” says Evin.

“He has many similar characteristics that his brother Chris had and I know he will fit right in with our team.”

Both players arrive to the Saints with high regard from their former coach.

“The Summerland Steam is very proud to that Brett and Nelson have committed to play for Selkirk College in the upcoming season,” says Steam head coach John Depourcq. “Both players have been a pleasure to coach and instrumental in the success of our team over the last three seasons. Their work ethic, ability, and leadership skills will be a real asset at the college level, not only on the ice, but in the classroom.”

Huber plans to enroll in the University Arts and Sciences Program at Selkirk College with a concentration on Psychology, while Hurry plans to enrol in the two-year Associate of Science Degree Program and work towards a degree in Kinesiology in the future.

With a third straight British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL) championship now part of the history books, the Selkirk College Saints continue to build towards continued success.

The hockey program is pleased to announce the playing commitments of Brett Huber and Nelson Hurry to attend and compete for the Saints beginning in the 2015-2016 BCIHL season. Both players are fresh off successful junior careers with the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League’s (KIJHL) Summerland Steam.

Huber is a 5-foot-10, 165-pound goaltender who recently led the Steam to the second round of the playoffs and helped the team set a franchise record for goals against average in a season with 2.71. The Calgary native was the backbone of the Steam, posting three shutouts, a 2.38 GAA and .916 save percentage in 31 appearances while posting a winning record of 17-11-2 during the regular season. Huber was among the league leaders in all goaltending categories.

“I chose Selkirk College because it’s the right fit to keep developing my hockey skills while getting an education,” says Huber. “I can’t say enough about my time in Summerland, everyone there made my junior career unforgettable.

Playing there helped me develop tremendously on and off the ice.”

According to the team blog, Huber leaves the Steam as the franchise leader in games played (92), goals against average (2.90), save percentage (.910), minutes played (5,059) and shots faced (2,664) while being awarded team MVP the past two seasons.

Huber is described as a very calm, positional goaltender who can win big games.

Update

Maintenance Shutdown We have now concluded our annual maintenance shutdown.

The maintenance costs for this outage were approximately $10 million.

At the peak of the shutdown we had as many as 500 additional people on site.

Initial inspection inside the kiln, prior to re-bricking.

The magnitude of work that was completed during the 9 day outage was considerable. Our appreciation is extended to our employees, contractors, temporary trades and man-watch for orchestrating the tasks and activities so well and for doing it SAFELY! We made the decision to postpone the completion of one of the capital projects planned for this year’s shutdown; the new drive line up for our #2 pulp machine.

The project team will continue to work with the vendor and plan to make the switch over to the new line in next year’s maintenance outage.

Environmental performance during the M15 shutdown was good. The effluent treatment plant ran steady throughout the shutdown and was able to effectively manage the changing flows and effluent characteristics. No odour The Digester top separator screw being removed. concerns from the public were received while bringing the mill down or during the maintenance work. However, we did experience some short-duration venting during the process of bringing the mill back up to full operating rates.

Over 200 people came out for a taste of borscht and to browse the vendor wares at the Horse Association of Central Kootenay’s fundraiser.

The event was held in the Crescent Valley Hall this past Saturday and according to the hosts, was a great success. Over $1,000 was raised from the sales of borscht, chili, hotdogs and raffle tickets.

All proceeds will be

going towards hosting a Youth Horse Camp July 24 - 25.

Obituaries and Memorials January 16, 1938 March 6, 2015

Verna passed away peacefully in the early hours of March 6, at Trail Regional hospital.

She was born to Irene and Bill Elasoff in Salmo on the family farm. There she grew up with older brother Bill and sisters Lucy and Mary. Farm chores were always on the agenda for everyone but late summer days were remembered for trips to Porcupine Creek for huckleberries which were plentiful in Salmo country and which were sold to customers from as far away as Washington state.

Verna had to come to Castlegar to finish high school which she was able to do because sister Lucy and hubby John Popoff lived there.

It was in Castlegar that she met her future husband Fred. Both graduated from Stanley Humphries High School in 1956 after which Verna attended business school in Trail.

Verna and Fred were married in 1958 by which time she found work with Canada Post under the tutelage of Russel Deans well known in the community After a year in Victoria the Salekin family - Arlene was born in 1959 - moved to Princeton, later to Nelson and eventually back to home turf in Castlegar.

Robson became the family’s home and in time the birth of son Barry and daughter Renita completed the family. A good garden ensured that the family was well fed. Verna was especially proud of her fruit cellar which was wall - to wall jars full of canned goodies - tomatoes and peaches, pears and jams enough to supply the Russian army it was said. Of course the deep freeze was loaded with the obligatory huckleberries and mushrooms. Visiting children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren never left without boxes of preserved stuff from Verna’s labour of love.

When the children became independent Verna returned to employment with Canada Post, first as clerk and later as postmistress in Robson. Nearly everyone in Robson came to know her and she was able to memorize all the post office box numbers of those she served. When the Robson post office was closed, she had to commute to Montrose where she served as postmistress until her retirement.

Left to mourn are her immediate family, husband Fred, daughters Arleen Langille and Renita Lennon, and brother Bill Elasoff of Nelson. She was predeceased by her son Barry in August 2014, by her parents, and by her two older sisters and their husbands. She is survived by four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Her family will be forever grateful to the friends who helped her in her troubled times especially Norma Waldron and Grace.

Thanks also to Drs. Dixon-Warren, Treholm and the staff at Trail Hospital. And finally, thank you to Gwen and the staff of Alternatives Funeral Service for your professional care and helpful advice.

Nick Chernoff It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Nick Chernoff on March 29th, 2015 at the age of 77.

Nick will be remembered for his big heart and willingness to help others. He loved spending time in nature, his garden, the gravel pit, and in his loader 'Queen Bess'. Most of all Nick loved spending time with all his grandchildren and family. Nick was well known for his community involvement through his company Trowelex Rentals & Sales and one of his proudest moments was being named the City of Castlegar's 2012 Citizen of the Year.

Nick met the love of his life Vera in 1956 at choir practice. They married in 1959 and have enjoyed spending the last 55 years sharing a mutual favourite past time of going on drives to enjoy the scenery together.

He will be warmly remembered by his children Kevin (Trish) Chernoff, Harold (Tammy) Chernoff, and Shelly Braga. His eight grandchildren FawnLee Chernoff, Nicholas (Tawnya) Chernoff, Megan Chernoff, Brandon Chernoff, Selina Braga, Raissa Chernoff, Shaelynn Braga and Cole Chernoff along with his three great grand children Kiana, Kylie, and Avalon. Nick was predeceased by his parents Pete and Mable Chernoff and his son Nick Chernoff Jr. A service will be held at the Brilliant Cultural Centre on April 7th at 10am with a lunch to follow. In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the local children’s charity of your choice in Nick's honour.

Holgar Wagner Christiansen Sadly the family of Holgar Wagner Christiansen, of Castlegar, wishes to announce his unexpected passing at his home in Castlewood Village on Monday, March 23, 2015 blessed with 85 years of life.

Holgar was born in Innisfail, Alberta on January 19, 1930 to parents Matlida and Knud Christiansen. His younger years were spent on the family farm near Dickson and Spruce View, Alberta. Claiming he was 18, when he was 16, he operated a bulldozer for Scott and Plomus. He also cleared brush and did oilfield work and was able to buy a home in Calgary.

On January 24, 1959, he married the love of his life, Edith Greenwald and they raised two sons. Holgar was successful in Real Estate for 30 plus years, bought some acreage in Silver Springs and did some development and building.

In his later years he loved camping, dirt biking, playing cards (especially crib), joking around, having fun and visiting for coffee. Edith and Holgar were involved in many clubs and organizations, they travelled to many places around the world and spent many winters in and around Arizona. About a year and a half ago they decided to move to Castlegar to be close to their sons and settled in Castlewood Village with new friends.

Here they were able to explore some of the Kootenays this past summer.

Left to mourn his loss is loving wife of 56 years Edith, sons Richard and Greg and granddaughter Mischa Christiansen and partner Steve Mercer.

He usually said “Adios Amigos” (Goodbye Friends).

Cremation has taken place in care of Castlegar Funeral Chapel.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Rockyview Cemetery in Calgary on June 13, 2015 at 2:00 PM.
