Proposed changes to existing provincial electoral boundaries would bring considerable change to Abbotsford and Mission before the 2017 election, combining some regions of the communities with neighbouring municipalities.

The electoral boundaries commission released their preliminary report on Thursday, which outlines proposed updates to provincial boundaries.

There are currently 85 ridings in the province and each is intended to have a similar population. They are reassessed periodically to reflect population changes.

The Fraser Valley would see the most substantial changes, states the report, with the addition of a new riding in both Surrey and Richmond.

According to the report, Langley ridings were well over the provincial average, and are proposed to be reduced in size and population – shifting the remaining areas to more eastern ridings.

There are three existing ridings in Abbotsford: Abbotsford West, Abbotsford South and AbbotsfordMission.

Local regions would be combined with other municipalities, creating the electoral districts of AldergroveAbbotsford, Fort LangleyAbbotsford, Abbotsford Centre, Chilliwack-Sumas, along with changes to the existing Abbotsford-Mission.

divided at Highway 11. The eastern portion would be the Chilliwack-Sumas district, including much of the city of Chilliwack, and the western portion would be the Aldergrove-Abbotsford district, which includes Aldergrove and the Township of Langley.

North of Highway 1, the westernmost part of Abbotsford – west of Clearbrook – would form part of the Fort LangleyAbbotsford district. Between Clearbrook and Highway 11 would be the Abbotsford Centre district – an exclusively Abbotsford region. It would include neighbourhoods north of Highway 1, west of Highway 11 and east of Clearbrook and Glenmore roads, bordered in the north by the Fraser River.

The Abbotsford-Mission riding would contain the rest of Abbotsford east of Highway 11, north of Highway 1, Fraser Valley Regional District Area H, and the eastern part of Mission.

The western area of Mission be incorporated into the Maple Ridge-Mission electoral district.

With the release of the preliminary report, residents can now submit input online at bc-ebc.ca, or by email or mail by 11:59 p.m. on May 26.

There will be public hearings in communities across B.C. in April and May. The input will be analyzed over the summer before the final proposal is submitted as recommendations to the Legislative Assembly by Sept.

Family of Theresa Hildebrandt lives four decades without answers in her murder

Theresa Hildebrandt was an energetic and feisty teen who loved music, animals and her family.

She was a good girl who did well in school and caused few issues for her parents. She did run away once – to the Blue Star Motel in Aldergrove to see her boyfriend – after a fight with her dad, but her family tracked her down within a few hours, and all was forgiven.

So when she failed to show up for a family dinner with her three siblings, parents and grandparents on Victoria Day, May 24, 1976, there was immediate concern.

Despite her one runaway episode, the 15-year-old was otherwise responsible and would not miss a family occasion. If something had come up, she would have called.

Worry quickly turned to fear, and the Matsqui Police Department was called.

An officer arrived at the home on Sunvalley Crescent – located between Bradner and Ross roads, north of Simpson Road – to take a report.

Yes, Theresa had run away before, but it wasn’t a serious attempt to leave home, the family told the officer.

They pointed out that on this occasion, she had left behind all her belongings – including her prized transistor radio, which she most certainly would have taken if she were leaving for any length of time.

Theresa’s oldest brother Harold, then 20, indicated that he had last seen his sister earlier that day when he ran into her and her boyfriend in Langley, across from the A&W Restaurant.

The shift from the Tuesday and Thursday schedule, in effect since 2011, will take effect the week of April 5.

In a related move, the Langley Advance is switching from publishing twice a week to a single edition on Thursday.

The Advance is one of a number of newspaper titles, related publications and digital properties which Black Press, the owner of The Times,

acquired from Glacier Media. The sale, first announced in December, was completed last Tuesday.

The Aldergrove Star, also published by Black Press, will continue to publish a weekly edition on Thursday.

Sarwan Singh Randhawa Local librarian builds cultural connections

Muriel Arnason Library’s Sarwan Singh Randhawa has won the Champion of Diversity Award.

Fraser Valley Regional Library’s Dr. Sarwan Singh Randhawa has been recognized for his work building cultural connections in the local community.

He was awarded the prestigious 2015 Champion of Diversity Award at the 12th Annual Fraser Valley Cultural Diversity Awards.

He was nominated for the award by Township of Langley Mayor Jack Froese.

Randhawa, the Community Librarian at FVRL’s Muriel Arnason branch, is active in the Township of Langley and has become well known for celebrating diversity through various initiatives both in-library and in the surrounding community.

Township of Langley Councillor Petrina Arnason – the daughter of Muriel Arnason, for which the Willowbrook

area library is named after – accepted the award on Randhawa’s behalf and shared his message of “gratitude and honour.”

Randhawa was unable to attend the ceremony as he was abroad at the time.

“Sarwan exemplifies FVRL’s values – his passion for creating and supporting multicultural programs and efforts have drawn many people to the resources of the library,” say Scott Hargrove, FVRL’s Chief Executive Officer.

“His celebration of diversity makes both FVRL and the local community that much more inclusive and vibrant.”

Randhawa has been a major contributor to the successful organization of FVRL’s Diwali festivities and World Cultures Month activities, as well as local Canada Day celebrations, the Langley International Festival, and much more.

Starting this month elementary school students in Aldergrove will be taking a weekend’s worth of food home with them every Friday.

It’s an initiative of the Aldergrove Rotary Club, designed to ensure that youths have food in their bellies on the days that school lunch programs are not available to the most needy.

It is inspired by, and modeled after, the Starfish backpack program launched by Abbotsford Rotary Club three years ago.

The program, which is supported and co-ordinated by the Abbotsford Rotary Club, began in the 2012/13 school year to help feed kids who might be going hungry on the weekends. Many of these students were part of their school’s breakfast and/or lunch programs during the week. Every Friday, participating students receive a backpack filled with two breakfasts, two lunches and two dinners to last them for the weekend.

The empty packs are then returned and refilled for the following week, thanks to volunteers who shop for the items, fill the backpacks and deliver them to the schools.

The cost of providing the backpacks for one child for the school year is $525, which comes from donations from local organizations, individuals, businesses and churches.

The program started with 10 backpacks at one Abbotsford school and has since grown to over 200 backpacks at about a dozen schools. Abbotsford Rotary and their donors raised over $90,000 for the program last year.

Abbotsford Rotarian (and publisher of The Star’s sister paper, The Abbotsford News) Andrew Franklin said, “This is a far reaching program, impacting schools, business and the local food bank… it has been very successful here (and)

Aldergrove Rotarians Paul Guiton and Pauline Buck have taken on the project in Aldergrove and after several months work they plan a test launch of the Starfish backpacks on Friday, April 10.

They have secured funding for 20 backpacks until the end of the current school year, to be divided

by Parkside and Shortreed elementary schools in Aldergrove.

Aldergrove Rotarians will be working on soliciting funding to expand the program for the entire school year next fall, and Guiton and Buck are confident that goal will be achieved.

“It looked like it would be a challenge but it really hasn’t been,” said Guiton. “People are falling over to help when we asked them to join us. We have some great community partners we’ve engaged to help us do it.”

Three local grocers — Safeway, Save-on Foods and Otter Co-op — are providing food at reduced prices to the Starfish program.

Sarah Barber, a nutritionist from Encompass society (formerly known as Aldergrove Neighbourhood Services) will be doing the shopping and advising

on the contents of the backpacks, to provide maximum nutrition and ease of preparation for the youths.

The backpacks will be filled every Friday by community service volunteers from the Aldergrove Secondary Student Leadership program. They will be assisted by mentors from the Langley Township Fire Fighters charitable association.

Both elementary schools already have breakfast and snack programs in place during the school week through Breakfast Canada, and will identify the students most in need of the food packs.

The backpacks have been supplied by Unitex of Abbotsford, which “gave us a fantastic deal on them,” said Buck.

Aldergrove Rotary Club is currently developing a new website for the Aldergrove Starfish program, which will be www.starfishpack.ca, and tax deductible receipts will also be issued to donors.

Aldergrove Rotary’s goal is to have 40 Starfish packs sponsored by the start of the new school year.

The Libertarian Party of Canada has nominated Lauren Southern for the federal riding of LangleyAldergrove.

Lauren Southern was born and raised in Surrey and is currently living Langley. Lauren became an advocate of Libertarian values when she began discovering the works of Libertarian philosophers at a young age. She adopted the belief that the government does not know how to spend an individual’s money better than they do. Nor should the government have the right to instruct people on how to live their lives when their way of life is causing no harm to those around them.

Lauren plans on running a strong campaign in order to spread the libertarian message, as well as move power away from the government and back to the people. She feels strongly about issues such as corporate welfare, criminalization of victimless crimes and taxation.

In promoting liberty, Lauren hopes to create a better, freer Canada for current and future Canadians.

“Government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem,” says Southern.

Help may be on the way to ease the problem of big trucks parking in residential areas and clogging up the local streets of Surrey and surrounding communities.

Transportation Minister Todd Stone says there’s a serious shortage of parking and staging areas for trucks across the Lower Mainland and the province is now aiming to open new ones.

“We are exploring a number of potential locations South of the Fraser for short-term parking facilities between Abbotsford and Delta

to improve efficiency and reduce congestion,” he said Friday in a speech in Surrey to the Cloverdale Chamber of Commerce.

Stone said he’s heard repeated calls for a solution to the problem from both the city and Surrey-area MLAs, and said it’s now a “top priority.”

An additional staging area for container trucks is expected to be opened in partnership with Port Metro Vancouver near Deltaport, he added.

“The purpose of this staging area will be to reduce congestion and queueing on provincial high-

ways and local roads, allowing truckers to safely park and turn off their engines, which will reduce idling and also help improve air quality.” More details are expected to come in the weeks ahead.

Stone said he expects to release the new provincial transportation plan – dubbed B.C. On the Move – sometime this month and said it will be accompanied by a trucking strategy aimed at easing goods movement issues, including the parking shortage.

Stone said staging areas may be opened with private partners who could offer additional amenities.

Letter writer commended Editor: I would like to thank B. Taylor of Aldergrove for his well-written opinion on the transit referendum. I was leaning toward the “Yes” side (knowing full well that TransLink was being badly mismanaged).

However, after reading the letter I have reconsidered. Taylor’s letter was both informative and entertaining.

As a mother and grandmother, I can certainly relate to the hand in the cookie jar reference. While better transit is needed, let TransLink and the provincial government do what families do when they need more money — budget better and reallocate. In other words, make do.

If and when TransLink gets its act together and shows fiscal responsibility, maybe then the voters would consider adding to the pot.

VICTORIA – Why did the B.C. government suddenly slam the door on their old friend George Abbott, after spending months recruiting him to head up the B.C. Treaty Commission?

The instant media narrative, embraced by a shocked Abbott and then by NDP leader John Horgan, was that this was payback for grievances nursed by Premier Christy Clark from the 2011 B.C. Liberal leadership contest.

Done on a whim, Horgan said after a week grilling Clark and Aboriginal Relations Minister John Rustad. Clark is suddenly a sore winner, lashing out, wrecking two decades of careful and costly treatymaking.

Like many instant media narratives, this one makes no sense and is almost certainly wrong.

If Clark was resentful about the roasting she received from leadership rivals Abbott and Kevin Falcon, she had an odd way of showing it. She appointed Falcon as finance minister to drive a stake into the harmonized sales tax, and Abbott as education minister to fashion a pre-election truce with the ever-hostile teachers’ union. Both completed their unlikely tasks and retired as heroes of the party in 2013.

Outgoing chief treaty commissioner Sophie Pierre was as dismayed as anyone at the news of Abbott’s demise. While the two were

in transition meetings, Pierre learned that she was not being replaced, leaving the federal-provincial-First Nations Summit partnership of 22 years in a shambles.

Clark went further when questioned by reporters about the sudden reversal.

The future of aboriginal relations in B.C. may or may not include the B.C. Treaty Commission.

“There have been some results, but four treaties in 22 years for $600 million is not enough result,” Clark said.

“We have to be able to move faster, and we have to find a way to include more First Nations in the process.”

That $600 million is mostly loans, from the federal government to First Nations to finance treaty talks. Of every $100 spent trying to honour the century-old duty to sign treaties across B.C., $80 is a loan from Ottawa, $12 is a grant from Ottawa and $8 is a grant from B.C. The plan was for First Nations to repay their loans out of cash settlements made to them for 100-odd years of uncompensated resource extraction, which is now accepted as being contrary to British and Canadian law.

It was the blunt-spoken Pierre who first acknowledged this hasn’t worked. Some of the 50 First Nations stuck at the treaty table have borrowed too much to go on, she said last year, calling for an “exit

strategy” that forgives debt.

The probability of the B.C. government making this decision without talking to the federal paymaster is exactly zero.

I’m told the province’s clumsy timing had something to do with Ottawa’s late demands.

I asked Clark if her plan to settle land claims faster was anything like the 2009 attempt

by Gordon Campbell’s deputy minister Jessica McDonald to negotiate a province-wide deal declaring aboriginal title.

Clark sidestepped the question, saying only that the 150 B.C. First Nations not at the treaty table need a say and a solution too.

(McDonald now faces a similar legal gridlock as the Clark-appointed CEO of BC Hydro, trying to build the Site C dam.)

Pierre, a veteran administrator from the Ktunaxa Tribal Council in the Kootenays, made a prophetic statement when her term as chief commissioner was extended three years ago.

She said if Ottawa isn’t prepared to give federal negotiators a realistic mandate on compensation and sharing of salmon rights, they should “shut ’er down.”

Her advice may have been heard after all.

Editor: Question for Jordan Bateman of the Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation: If you stand up for taxpayers why do you not talk about BC Hydro collecting a transit tax levy of $0.06240 per day on all residential Hydro bills? And do businesses pay more?

I tried to call BC Hydro and they said they have nothing to do with it. They said I would have to call TransLink but when I did I didn’t get an answer. No one answered the phone.

Why should TransLink or transit get any more money when they are not even responsible enough to be truthful about what money they get and from where it comes?

Where is everybody who is supposed to be looking out for the taxpayers? What a joke.

Langley tax dollars used Editor: I have a great deal of respect for Mayor Jack Froese, and most of the time I agree with him. However, his answer to the concerned citizen, reassuring that individual that no tax dollars in Langley have been spent promoting any side, is erroneous.

Did Mayor Froese compose and send his own press release to alert the local media that he and Mayor Ted Schaffer would be at the Carvolth Exchange last Tuesday, or did he have a Township staff member do so? Did he contact Michelle Murti of Fraser Health Authority, or have his assistant do so?

Did he co-ordinate the schedule of his mayoral counterpart in the City of Langley and the medical health officer, or did an assistant do this on his behalf? If so, then indeed taxpayers dollars were spent to promote the ‘yes’ side.

I intend to vote ‘no’ in the upcoming plebiscite, because I feel that on this side of the Fraser River, we have been treated like poor relations and given very little in exchange for the taxes we already pay for such meagre service. This is especially true in Aldergrove.

Conservation neglected Editor: How come, when I drive from the lower mainland, to the Alaska highway in North eastern British Columbia, do I only see one moose alongside of the road. How come, when we spend two weeks in the fall, as a group of 4-8 resident hunters, do we see a total of one elk, and six moose in prime habitat?

By now, many British Columbians have heard or seen in the news about some battle that some group of hunters have about something to do with guide outfitters getting more animals. Or something like that. A number of non-hunters have said to me, “Ya, I follow a bit, but what’s it really about?” I’m glad you asked.

You see, the provincial government has closed the purse strings to conservation in British Columbia. And they’ve done so for many years now. They rely on not for profit organizations, like the BC Wildlife Federation and others and their countless volunteers, to do all the backbone work of caring for the environment, creating or restoring fish and wildlife habitat, amongst a multitude of other things.

Aside from habitat preservation, one of the most important things that is required is strong solid wildlife population assessments. You see, whether you’re a hunter, or not really doesn’t matter in this case.

Cities may take on farmland enforcement

The Agricultural Land Commission may get help from Metro Vancouver cities to fight illegal dumping and truck parking that degrades the region’s farmland and blocks food production.

ALC officials said it’s an open question as to whether urban organic waste composting should be done on ALR land.

On one hand, farmers could benefit and be more viable if they can also sell the compost, nutrients or energy from organics, they said, but perhaps organics should instead be shipped elsewhere to keep local farmland free for farming.

The surge in organic waste flowing onto farmland is the result of Metro’s

ban on dumping food waste in the garbage and the accompanying curbside collection programs of local cities.

“Composting is wonderful,” Bullock said. “But is it meant to be done in the cheapest possible way on the biggest agricultural piece we have and then it all of a sudden morphs into something way beyond what we all thought?

“Our agricultural land is not cheap industrial land. But that’s what too many people in the Lower Mainland are looking at.”

Bullock noted more change is the wings on what’s allowed in the ALR. The province is expected to soon roll out regulations that could authorize new commercial or industrial uses in the ALR after conducting consultations on a discussion paper last summer.

“We’re expecting more clarity.”

Empty seats prompt new ideas for Abbotsford’s bus system

On a recent Friday morning, the No. 7 Sumas Mountain bus chugs through a suburban Abbotsford neighbourhood, three passengers on board.

One is a young man heading to the Abbotsford Recreation Centre for a skating practice – his daily routine. There is a young carless woman who says she plans to transfer for a University of the Fraser Valley-bound bus. And there is this Abbotsford News reporter, asking the limited occupants their destination.

Throughout most of its morning trip – leaving from downtown at 8 a.m. and returning half an hour later – the bus has only a handful of riders, with most hopping on board nearer to the city’s centre.

In this respect, the morning No. 7 is not unique – a fact that’s hard to miss by those who yearn for a time when Abbotsford’s transit system carries a significant portion of the city’s residents.

In the 2013/14 fiscal year, the Central Fraser Valley regional transit system, which serves Abbotsford and Mission, had a ridership of nearly 2.4 million, or about 6,500 trips per day.

That number lags behind other BC Transit regional systems in Kelowna, Kamloops, and the Regional District of Nanaimo – all of which serve smaller populations.

that haunt the Abbotsford transit system. And as a daily bus rider, they have affected his life directly.

While Swallow shares a car with his wife, she uses it during the week to get to work. When he first began attending classes at UFV, he was living in the Clearbrook area and found himself fortunate to be living along the No. 3 GoLine. But when it came time to move from there, Swallow chose an apartment with busing to school in mind.

“When I moved, I knew I had to be on the No. 3 line.”

That’s exactly the decision urban planners want a transit system to influence.

However, the Abbotsford system has challenges that make Swallow’s foregoing of a vehicle the exception to the rule.

The easiest of those issues to fix are probably the most common complaints – late buses, or buses that don’t show up at all; a cumbersome website; and infrequent buses that make scheduling difficult.

Matt Boyd of BC Transit said there are plans to start rolling out such “quick fixes” this year to improve general service based on a recently completed review of the system. A report on those efficiencies is slated to come to Abbotsford and Mission’s Joint Shared Services Committee in April.

“There are some existing ontime performance issues,” he said.

Without proper scientific data from our regional wildlife biologists we run the risk of losing decades of conservation.

So you may ask, “ What does this have to do with this wildlife allocation thingy?” Here it is. When this government puts more animal allocations in the hands of guide outfitters (who predominently cater to foreign trophy hunters), we as British Columbians will lose more wildlife than if those same allocation had gone to a resident

hunter. Why? Because guide outfitters use planes and helicopters to scout their territories and spend countless hours in their territory patterning their prey so that they can claim on their website, an 98 per cent success rate, or the like.

As resident hunters, we save up a year’s worth of holidays, and go.

That’s it. We don’t have the unlimited resources the guide outfitters use. And for those reasons alone, less animals will be harvested each year by a resi-

dent hunter, on the Leh system, than a guide outfitter. You see the “LEH” is like a lottery system for hunters, and we have a choice to enter in it (it gives the likelihood of a successful hunt much better odds), or hunt in a “general open season”.

Leh was created in order to protect certain animals from certain areas from being over-harvested, and putting the population “At Risk”.

But, and I repeat but, now it has become a money game for the govern-

ment of B.C. And in so doing, they’ve lost sight of what it was intended for, the protection and conservation of wild animals until they reached a solid, healthy population.

This provincial government must immediately enact proper conservation funding.

The “allocation issue” is a big part of that. Equally important is funding the regional biologists, so as to be able to gain proper scientific data on regional wildlife populations.

Without these measures, we are playing William Tell, with a blindfold.

I ask this government, including my MLA Simon Gibson, to work harder to understand the needs of conservation, the needs of resident hunters here in B.C. Listen to your people, and organizations like the BCWF. They are “in the know” so to speak.

Let’s turn this train wreck around, before we never see a moose on our journey.

Langley RCMP are asking for the public’s help to locate several suspects in connection with three separate robberies that took place during the past month.

In each case, police are looking for a man and a woman.

The first incident took place on Feb. 25, when a wallet was stolen from a vehicle outside a business in the 26500 block of Gloucester Way. One of the victim’s credit cards was used at a gas station down the street. The couple (pictured) is believed to have been driving a red 1999 Pontiac Transport passenger van. They have also been linked to a sage green 2004 Ford Freestar passenger van.

The next incident took place a month later, on March 26, when another couple entered the Langley City 7-Eleven store. Police allege they stole several phone chargers valued at approximately $120.

That same day (March 26) police were called to an apartment complex in the 5400 block of 203 Street where a break-and-enter had occurred overnight. The suspects pried open a door and entered through the building’s parking garage.

They were able to pry another door and enter the lobby, where mail was stolen. The suspect couple are both Caucasian and were walking a white Pomeranian dog.

Lower Mainland real estate prices were up modestly in the first two months of the year, with detached houses showing the strongest gains, according to statistics from realtor associations.

In Metro Vancouver, the benchmark price of detached houses hit $1.026 million in February, up 9.7 per cent from a year earlier. And that varies wildly by geography, with the typical house on Vancouver’s west side sell-

ing for $2.4 million, compared to $480,500 in Maple Ridge.

The strongest one-year price gains for houses within Metro have been around 12 per cent in Vancouver and north Burnaby.

The Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver reported its benchmark price for attached homes rose 4.6 per cent to $481,500 and apartments were up three per cent year-over-year to $386,500.

The benchmark price of detached houses in the Fraser

Valley, which includes Surrey, White Rock and North Delta, was $581,400 in February, up 4.2 per cent from a year ago.

Benchmark prices for townhouses were down 0.6 per cent year-over-year to $297,200 and apartments were down 1.8 per cent to $189,700, according to the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board.

Abbotsford has seen the strongest gains with townhouses up more than seven per cent and apartments up more than 10 per cent.

Those changes to routes could come online in September, and it’s hoped they will improve the reliability of the system for users.

Larger proposed changes, including moving the main bus exchange downtown, could take a couple more years.

-------Getting more people trying out the system in the first place though, is a much greater challenge. According to Abbotsford Mayor Henry Braun, it may require rethinking both the concept of municipal transit and the way the city undertakes development.

Braun hears about the empty buses, but he’s also quick to point out the popularity of certain routes – although he said some people don’t believe him when he tells a story about having to stand on an

Abbotsford bus because all the seats were taken.

Braun would like to see the system focus on the well-travelled transit corridors like South Fraser Way between HighStreet and downtown, Clearbrook between downtown and UFV, and George Ferguson Way and Marshall and McCallum roads. He envisions smaller buses running into outlying residential developments.

“We need to … provide a much better level of service to our citizens in our urban core.”

That strategy is to essentially favour good transit in the city’s densest areas over mediocre coverage for the entire city. And while it could address some of the concerns raised by commuters like Swallow, Braun knows it might also anger the relatively few bus users who live in outlying areas.

BC Transit’s planned changes were conceived under the auspices of “budget neutral planning” – in

other words, no funding increases.

Braun thinks more investment is needed, suggesting an additional $500,000 per year would be reasonable.

But changes go beyond even that, to a re-thinking of Abbotsford’s development and future growth, Braun said.

“We need to plan a city that takes [transit] into account,” he said.

Braun said that means increasing density in the city’s core and sometimes foregoing “hopscotch” development in outlying areas.

Building denser neighbourhoods can help generate ridership for better transit system, which can in turn draw more people to live in Abbotsford’s core.

“We have to densify this city so we have a livable and accessible core for people who don’t want to own a car,” he continued. “We just can’t sustain what we have been doing.”

“This was the best audience to date,” said Luongo. “There was clearly a great atmosphere in the building and the performers very much fed off of the energy.”

With acts ranging from hip hop to lyrical dance, a rapper, a pair of heart-stopping aerial acts, more than a dozen musical performances and even a slam poet, the fifth and final Langley Has Talent competition, held at Christian Life Assembly on Saturday, was a variety show in the truest form of the word.

Judged by talent agent Jolienne Moore, TV and film actor Michael Roberds and musician Leah Emmott, the field of 23 semifinalists was narrowed to 12 acts that will return to the stage at CLA on April 18 to compete for a top prize of $2,500 in cash as well as a range of industry prizes.

“The judges deliberated for an hour after the show, trying to narrow down the field and, in the end, got a lineup that will certainly provide a highly entertaining show that will highlight Langley’s talent level,” said master of ceremonies and Langley Rotarian, Peter Luongo.

Among those heading through to the finals will be trapeze artist Caitlyn Mckenzie and silk aerialist Amanda Wormald both of whom worked high above the stage without benefit of a harness or a net.

Returning for the third time, rapper Josh G. kicked it old school with a mash-up that included the theme from the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, while newcomer, spoken word artist Rachel Sault, personified a cork speaking to a wine bottle in a poem that featured plenty of clever turns of phrase.

Families gather on Easter to participate in many different traditions that have been passed down through time. One such tradition is coloring Easter eggs. Millions of eggs are harvested and sold this time of year to be included in Easter festivities. However, soon after egg hunts have been completed and family dinners are brought to the table, those colored eggs may be relegated to the trash. When colored with food-grade dyes, such as those manufactured and readily available around Easter, the eggs remain safe to eat. Colored eggs that are stored in a refrigerator can last up to a week if their shells remain intact. Peeled eggs may last up to five days, says the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service. Once eggs are boiled and dyed, they should be promptly put into the refrigerator to keep them fresh and edible. It’s adviseable to use plastic, wood or papier-mâché eggs for Easter egg hunts, as eggs made of such materials will not spoil. Otherwise, hide and refrigerate hard-boiled eggs if this task can be completed within two hours. After that time frame, the eggs have the potential to spoil. By eating colored eggs, you can reduce waste and add a tasty appetizer to Easter meals.

Simpson in the Running for TRU Award Aldergrove’s Lucas Simpson is among the finalists in Thompson Rivers University WolfPack Division of Athletics and Recreation major awards.

Each one of the WolfPack’s teams have at least a representative for the three major awards: Doctor Roger H. Barnsley Scholar Athletes, TRU Sports Task Force Athletes of the Year and the Cliff Neufeld Leadership Athletes of the Year.

The Barnsley Award goes to the male and female student athletes who best combines academics and athletic performance. All nominees qualify as ‘TRU Scholar Athletes’.

In addition, the Newcomer of the Year, Community Award and the Directors Award will be announced at the awards banquet, which will be held at the Campus Activity Centre’s Grand Hall on Thursday, April 2.

United Way of the Fraser Valley distributes $220,000 in grants

Mom’s Day Special Mom Jenn Wolfe helps daughter Alexa cut sausages at last year’s Mother’s Day breakfast at Jubilee Hall. The annual Mother’s Day breakfast at Jubilee Community Hall (7989 Bradner Rd.) takes place Sunday, May 10.

This is the 41st year that Jubilee dads have been flipping some of the best flapjacks in town on this special day for moms.

The event runs from 8 a.m. to noon and the breakfast menu includes sausages, scrambled eggs, fruit cocktail and all-you-can-eat pancakes.

Cost for the breakfast, which also includes orange juice, coffee and tea, is $6. Children under six are free. For information, call 604-856-4375.

United Way distributed almost $220,000 last Wednesday to 24 Fraser Valley projects addressing poverty, homelessness and school readiness for young children.

The funds were announced during a presentation at Chilliwack Senior Secondary.

“Seven of the projects are focused on Abbotsford residents,” said Wayne Green, executive director of United Way. “We consider these important investments in our community.”

The projects include programming at Autumn House – a youth transition home – and a program at Central Abbotsford Community School that provides reading adventures for children struggling in kindergarten.

Funding was provided for projects covering the region and helping individuals from Aldergrove to Boston Bar. Those projects include counselling for women leaving transitional housing and the Big Bunch Program for children waiting for a Big Brother

or Big Sister.

“By increasing the funding available from $90,000 to $217,844, we were able to include some projects that we’ve never had an opportunity to partner with,” said Green.

It includes the Raven’s Moon Resource Society, which will secure landlords, train tenants and provide mediation services for individuals who have a hard time maintaining housing.

Green offered his thanks to Robin Marshall, the 2014 campaign chair, her campaign cabinet and all of the volunteers.
