HAVOC FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIPS

PROVINCIAL BUDGET

Health levy raises concerns BY CRYSTAL RHYNO ADVOCATE STAFF Central Albertans are willing to dig deeper to pay for “non-essentials” in order to “do their part” in tough times. As of Friday, Albertans paid 16 cents more for a bottle of wine, 90 cents more for a 12-case of beer and $5 more for a carton of cigarettes. But it is the newly-introduced health-care levy that raised concerns among shoppers in Red Deer on Sunday. The levy will go in effect on July 1 on personal income tax returns. While Calvin Ast has no problems with “sin taxes,” he has questions about the new levy. He wants more concise information about how the new program will work. Ast said he is a higher income earner who will likely have to pay the maximum. Ast has questions around tax deductions and maximum payouts per household.

Former MP Brian Jean DeWit beats wins Wildrose leadership LACOMBE-PONOKA

Fox for PC nomination

BY THE CANADIAN PRESS CALGARY — A former member of Stephen Harper’s Conservative caucus is the new leader of Alberta’s Official Opposition. Brian Jean, a 52-year-old lawyer from Fort McMurray, Alberta, defeated two challengers to become the new leader of the Wildrose Party. “I’m very happy. I’m very excited. I’m very humbled by the trust you’ve placed in me tonight,” said Jean who resigned from federal politics last year. “I actually regard it as a sacred trust,” he said to several hundred cheering supporters in Calgary. Twice during his victory speech, Jean choked back tears while speaking about his son, Michael, who died of cancer earlier this month during the thick of the leadership campaign. He thanked others who continued to campaign when he couldn’t in order to spend time with his family. “Mikey was a very, very special person. When cleaning his room this week, I found a handwritten note on the table beside his bed,” Jean told party members on Saturday. “He wrote in his own handwriting, ’What you do for yourself dies with you, but what you do for others remains and is immortal.”’ The Wildrose leadership race became necessary when former leader Danielle Smith and eight Wildrose colleagues crossed the floor to join the ruling Progressive Conservative Party, leaving Wildrose with just five seats. Jean, who will run in Fort McMurray, edged out current Wildrose member Drew Barnes and former Strathcona County mayor Linda Osinchuk. Members voted by telephone ballot for the last 13

days. According to the leadership committee chair, 35 per cent of the party’s 25,000 members voted, and Jean took 55 per cent of the ballots cast. Jean, who represented a northern Alberta riding in the House of Commons between 2004 and 2014, said he intends to keep the government of Premier Jim Prentice honest. But he is under no illusions about forming government. “I don’t look at a probability right now that we are going to form government in the next election. I believe we will win a strong mandate from the people, a strong mandate is what we need,” Jean told reporters.

Incumbent floor-crosser Rod Fox could not hold onto the Progressive Conservative nomination in the Lacombe-Ponoka constituency. Instead Peter DeWit, a Gull Lake-area businessman, is the PC’s choice. DeWit defeated Fox along with challengers Larry Henkelman and Wayne Rempel in the four-candidate contest on Saturday. Fox was one of 11 Wildrose MLAs who defected to the PCs late last year. DeWit said his campaign team worked very hard and he is pleased with the support and the results. He owns Nova Media Inc, a consulting company, and is a contract instructor at the Donald School of Business. “Lacombe-Ponoka is fast growing,” said DeWit, 49. “There’s a lot of projects that need to happen. Infrastructure, schools need to be built. I see that is going to be very important election issues when the election is called.” DeWit said he will bring his strong business background and agricultural roots to the table. The 49-year-old grew up on a dairy farm in The Netherlands and worked in the Information Technology sector before moving to Canada in 1993.
