North Okanagan economy on the move Glenn Mitchell Morning Star Editor
The economy is a bit like the weather: you know, the old saying “everybody talks about it but nobody does anything about it.” Well, OK, except we can’t do much about the weather but there’s plenty of people and businesses doing their best every day to contribute and grow the foundations of the local economy. And, like the wonderful weather in these parts, too often we take those efforts for granted. Many of us may know and take pride in homegrown major companies like Kal Tire and Tolko, who continue to thrive and expand and boast landmark buildings in Vernon that are testaments to their success as well as inspire confidence in the local economy. It’s sometimes curious how politicians can go on and on about untested industries like LNG when it’s the resourcebased industries that continue to build and work and expand the economy, with barely a headline to speak of. And then there’s the expansion of successful local firms that go about their business and continually add to the economy by not only growing but inspiring confidence and appreciation in others. Family-owned Butcher Boys is launching a major expansion and renovation at its familiar location (since 1961) at the corner of Pleasant Valley Road and Silver Star Road to better serve its loyal customers. Okanagan Spring is also celebrating its 30th anniversary in Vernon by pumping $4 million into increasing capacity at the brewery to keep up with demand in a challenging market. “You need to stay ahead of the curve all the time,” said Mathieu Aubin, mar-

Okanagan Spirits is settling into its new facility on 24th Street which includes a massive 50-plate, 2,000-pot copper still, increased production capacity and a funky viewing area that’s sure to be a hit with locals and tourists alike. “It’ll be very much a jewel in the Vernon tourism crown,” said Rodney Goodchild, sales and marketing manager. “It will be a definite stop for visitors.” And then there’s the local film industry that continues to attract heavyweight Oscar winners like George Clooney and

Sir Anthony Hopkins to the area, to name a few. Hats off to the Okanagan Film Commission and its partners. And speaking of positive developments, kudos to the local Save-On-Foods and Rona outlets for winning top company honours recently, and the recipients of the Greater Vernon Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards. “Each of our award winners represent dynamic organizations who have given back to the community in many ways,” said Jaron Chasca, GVCC president. Hear, hear.
And while we’re at it, three cheers for all the North Okanagan chambers, non-profits, community representatives, politicians, staff and volunteers who each day do their best to make this such a wonderful place to live on a daily basis. The residents of the North Okanagan know we have it good here and justifiably take pride in all it has to offer. This publication details just some of the reasons why. The weather is just a bonus. ....................................................................... Front page Predator Ridge photo courtesy of Colin Jewel
