‘Phish’ scam bombards Fraser Valley Aldergrove Star

Abbotsford Police are warning the public about a pair of online scams that aim to trick people into revealing personal information that can be used to access victims’ bank accounts.

Const. Paul Walker says the APD has received nearly two dozen complaints in recent days from residents who say they have received text and messages soliciting personal information.

In one of the scams, a text purports to come from the Canada Revenue Agency. The message tells the person they have been sent an Interac e-Transfer and supplies a link that redirects the recipient to an authentic-looking website. There, one is asked to provide personal banking information to complete the transfer.

However, the transfer is never completed and scammers make off with personal banking information.

Another fraud that has been reported involves email or text messages stating that the recipient’s TD online account has been suspended.

A link is supplied that takes the recipient to a login screen, where personal information can be submitted.

Again, the information provides the scammers with access to the private online account.

Walker says the text messages originate from California and

Oregon area codes.

Anyone with any doubts about the legitimacy of messages is encouraged to call the Canada Revenue Agency at numbers provided at the agency’s website, at www.cra-arc. gc.ca/ntcs/bwr-eng.html.

To report a fraudulent text messages, residents can contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or visit http:// www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca

Scammers have been bombarding local phone numbers with fraudulent text messages in recent days.

Extreme Home Repair doubles up this year

The Aldergrove Extreme Home Repair team will be tackling two projects this spring.

Now in its 12th year, the Aldergrove “Acts of Kindness” team from the Aldergrove Seventh-day Adventist Church, volunteers their time to complete renovations and restorations of homes which need some “tender loving care.”

Sponsors in the community also play an important role as they donate thousands of dollars worth of materials for the home make-overs. “it is sometimes difficult to make choices with so many needs in our community, but

we are feeling quite excited about our two medium-sized projects for this year,” said project coordinator, Pastor Mike Dauncey.

This year the AOK team has decided to do two smaller but still major projects instead of one major project, to help two different families in the community.

Laura Canessa’s family needs roof repairs on their home, while Mike Shufflebotham needs his home to be made wheelchair accessible.

Driver of ‘erratic’ beer truck fails roadside breath test Aldergrove Star

The driver of a beer truck was pulled over in Abbotsford earlier this month, and subsequently failed a breathalyzer test, the RCMP’s Fraser Valley Traffic Services announced this week.

Officers said that a white semitruck with white lettering was reported to be driving erratically on Highway 1 through Langley on

March 9, in the middle of the day.

Later, another truck driver called RCMP to report that a truck of the same description and hauling a trailer was driving erratically on the highway. The caller said the driver had made a hand-gesture while passing.

Around 4 p.m., the complainant helped Mounties track down the truck in question on the highway, still in Abbotsford. After being pulled

over near No. 3 road, the driver was given a breathalyzer, which he failed, and handed an immediate roadside prohibition.

The truck and the trailer, which was found to be full of beer, were towed to a local tow-yard. The owner of the trailer was then notified where the beer could be picked up.

The truck driver was not criminally charged and took a taxi, along with

his female passenger, to Chilliwack.

“Although this story has an element of humour and irony, this is a reminder that impaired driving is a serious matter,” said Cpl. Ronda Rempel of BC RCMP Traffic Services. “Operating any vehicle, in this case, a truck with a loaded trailer, while impaired is extremely dangerous and can have devastating outcomes.

“We are very fortunate FVTS RCMP members located the truck before a serious and possibly fatal incident occurred. We appreciate the responsible truck driver calling the police to notify us of the dangerous driver on our roads. He very likely saved a life that day.”

Two men were caught in the act of breaking into Langley businesses over the last week.

On March 20 at around 4 a.m., police received a call from an alarm company who advised they had live footage of a male inside the

Aldergrove Bottle Depot in the 27500 block of Fraser Highway.

The male was observed rummaging through containers.

Police arrived very quickly and found the male still inside the compound. The 30 year old Langley male was arrested and brought back to the

detachment to appear in court the following day.

Michael Allen Wiens has now been charged with break and enter and possession of break and enter tools. He was remanded in custody and was to next appear in Surrey Provincial Court on March 24.

On March 23 between midnight at 1 a.m., on-scene security reported a male inside a secured compound of a business in the 20200 block of 102B Avenue.

A 26-year-old Aldergrove man with a 10-year driving ban was arrested Thursday, following an hour-long dangerous driving spree. He is accused of running red lights and driving into oncoming traffic.

The province is pledging to widen Highway 1 in the Fraser Valley to six lanes between Langley and Abbotsford as part of its newly unveiled provincial transportation plan.

The document, titled B.C. On The Move, focuses largely on rural transportation priorities from highway upgrades for heavy trucks to regional airport improvements.

Its pledge to begin design work for a six-lane Highway 1 to Abbotsford offers no timeline or other specifics, such as whether HOV lanes will extend further east.

The plan also pledges 20 highway interchange and overpass improvements in the Lower Mainland, including a new Highway 1 interchange at Mountain Highway in North Vancouver to begin construction next year, and an upgrade to Mt. Lehman Road connecting Highway 1 to the Abbotsford Airport.

The biggest future project in the Lower Mainland will be the replacement of the George Massey Tunnel with a new bridge, although

there’s no price tag yet. The plan promises to continue planning for the project ahead of an expected construction start in 2017.

Nowhere in the document are tolls mentioned – either on the Massey bridge or elsewhere – but Transportation Minister Todd Stone has said the new bridge may well be tolled.

If both the Massey and Pattullo replacements are tolled, Stone says the province will have to alter its policy to reform how tolls are charged in the region, or else every lower Fraser River crossing except one would be tolled.

Several initiatives aim to help the trucking industry, including a pledge to build at least two new truck parking areas in the Lower Mainland and 10 new truck inspection pullouts across the province.

The announcement March 17 in Vancouver came the same week ballots began to go out in Metro Vancouver’s transit tax plebiscite.

The plan reiterates the province’s promise to deliver one third of the funding needed for major new rapid transit projects and to replace the Pattullo Bridge, subject

to business case completion and the constraints of the provincial budget.

Stone said the province is ready to deliver its share of the money for the transit plan proposed by the mayors if the mail-in vote passes.

“Our one third is on the table,” Stone said. “We’re waiting to see if the Lower Mainland’s residents approve the region’s share. That is why a Yes vote is so critical.”

Other planks of the provincial transportation plan include: - Allowing cities to enable motorcycle parking in unused spaces near intersections.

- Encouraging more use of natural gas buses across the province.

- Working with TransLink to improve SkyTrain accessibility with more elevators and escalators.

The province will also consider allowing slow-moving vehicles to make short trips on low-volume roads as an alternative for people in smaller communities who don’t want to drive a car. Also announced Wednesday was $7 million for widened pathways and safety fencing for cyclists and walkers on the Stanley Park causeway.

The Langley Times and Aldergrove Star have a new publisher — but she is not new to both newspapers, or to the community.

Jean Hincks has taken over as publisher of The Langley Times and the Aldergrove Star, effective Tuesday. She replaces Dwayne Weidendorf, who is moving over to become publisher of sister Black Press publications the Peace Arch News in South Surrey and the Now Newspaper in Surrey.

He has been publisher of The Times and The Star since 2006.

Hincks worked in accounting, classified, front office and advertising sales, eventually became advertising sales manager, at the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows News, for 19 years. She then came to The Times in 2007 as advertising manager, working here for five years before going to Burnaby to become publisher of the Burnaby News Leader and the New Westminster News Leader.

She is excited about returning to Langley and once again working with businesses and community groups.

Fleeing driver given three years in jail

A 30-year-old Chilliwack man has been sentenced to three years in jail and given a nine year driving ban in connection with a policeinvolved crash that killed a 47-yearold Delta man on 16 Avenue in Langley in 2012.

Devon Laslop was sentenced on Thursday in Surrey Provincial Court. For pleading guilty to flight causing death, Laslop was also given a three-year driving ban under the Criminal Code. He was also sentenced for driving while prohibited on that fateful day. For that, a provincial judge sentenced him to a further six months in jail and a six year driving ban under the Motor Vehicle Act as well as a $1,000 fine.

Laslop was originally charged with flight causing death and dangerous driving causing death as well as driving while prohibited.

At a preliminary inquiry held last October in Surrey Provincial Court, Laslop pleaded guilty of the

Victor Melo Duarte, a beloved father of two and husband, was killed in a crash on 16 Avenue in October 2012. Devon Laslop was sentenced to three years in jail for flight causing death. one charge of flight causing death.

Laslop fled a police road check and then crashed into two vehicles at an intersection at 16 Ave. and 240 Street around 5:30 p.m., on Oct. 29, 2012. He was prohibited from driving at the time.

Victor Melo Duarte, a beloved father of two and husband, was killed instantly when Laslop, driving a pickup truck, hit another vehicle, which in turn hit Duarte’s vehicle.

Because police did pursue the fleeing vehicle for a short distance, the Independent Investigation Office was called in to investigate whether the Langley RCMP’s action contributed to the fatal crash.

Two police vehicles pursued the truck, with emergency lights on, travelling more than 100 km/hr on a 60 km/hr road.

But according to the IIO report, the lead vehicle discontinued the pursuit in 36 seconds. The officer decided to pull over and turn off the lights instead, judging the pursuit as fruitless.

Less than three minutes later, the collision took place, leaving Duarte dead and Laslop seriously injured, said the IIO report.

This was the first investigation in Langley conducted by the IIO.

Langley saw more overdose deaths tied to the drug fentanyl in 2014 than big cities like Surrey.

In fact, 18 Langley residents died because of overdosing on a drug laced with fentanyl, compared to 15 in Surrey.

A spike in fentanyl drug overdose deaths in both Vancouver and the Fraser Health region has prompted a warning from police and public health officials.

Police say the synthetic narcotic is increasingly being sold to drug users in B.C., either on its own or often laced with other drugs — even marijuana.

There were 29 overdose deaths tied to fentanyl in Vancouver in 2014, followed by 18 in Langley and 15 in Surrey, according to deputy chief coroner Vince Stancato of the B.C. Coroners Service.

He said fentanyl deaths also occurred last year in Maple Ridge, Nanaimo, Prince George and Fort St. John.

“Everybody in the public seems to think the only people using drugs are in the Downtown Eastside. That’s just not true.”

While fentanyl patches are sometimes stolen from pharmacies or prescribed and then resold on the street, VPD and RCMP officials said they believe much of the fentanyl now showing up is illegally manufactured and arriving in powder, liquid or pill form.

Particularly at risk, they said, are recreational drug users.

“We’re finding fentanyl is cut into just about any other drug you can buy on the street,” said Sandra Glendinning of the Vancouver Police Department. “Heroin, marijuana, cocaine, oxycodone.”

She said no deaths have been linked to fentanyl-laced marijuana but it is being sold in B.C. and putting people who think they’re just using pot at higher risk.

Several agencies have joined forces to launch an information website on the risks of fentanyl at www.knowyoursource.ca.

Two men injured in explosion Aldergrove Star

Residents in the area of 238 Street and 58A Avenue were likely shocked by an explosion in the garage of a nearby home Tuesday afternoon, March 17.

Langley Township fire fighters and police were called to the home shortly before 5 p.m.

Two men were injured in the explosion and were taken to hospital with non-life threatening inju-

ries, said a police spokesperson.

The cause of the explosion is undetermined at this time and Langley Detachment investigators will continue their inquiries, said police.

Fentanyl death toll high in Langley Easter Many victims are described as recreational users who snorted, smoked or took pills they thought were another drug — such as cocaine, heroin or oxycodone — without realizing it contained fentanyl, which officials say is 50 to 100 times more toxic and can kill in small doses.

Fentanyl was present in just five per cent of drug overdose deaths in 2012, but that soared to 25 per cent of the 336 overdose deaths in B.C. last year, according to the coroners’ service.

Most victims were not injection drug users.

“It’s very concerning,” said Dr. Marcus Lem, a medical health officer for Fraser Health. “These are folks that often may not appear to anybody else to have an issue.”

Lem said many overdoses happen in private homes and the number of deaths in communities like Langley and Maple Ridge show the problem is not just limited to urban areas where drug use is most visible.

If one is to believe the polls, Metro Vancouver’s transit plebiscite is going down to defeat – or if you are on the “No” side, to victory.

So, living east of Metro, should we be concerned?

Let’s look at it this way. Should the 0.5% increase to sales tax in Metro be rejected, the need for improved and increased transit still remains.

This means the money needed for improvements will have to come from somewhere.

A vehicle levy on Metro residents is one way. Another would be road-usage levies, which would affect everyone regardless of where you live. Like the tolling sensors on the Port Mann Bridge, units could be placed every few kilometres along Highway 1 between Vancouver and Langley.

The more you travel, the more you pay.

And for anyone using this route, and any other that road-travel pricing may have placed on it, the levies will be indiscriminate.

Drive it and you will pay whether you live in Metro, or just travel through it from the Interior on your way to the airport or ferry terminals.

Cost recovery for transit investments that are going to happen won’t stop there. Metro residents could see their property taxes rise to meet the need for cash flow, and I’ll bet there’ll be a penny or two added to the price of a litre of fuel along with other fees that may be added to generate funds.

All of the above have been discussed. All have been considered and at this point rejected, based on the ability to raise the PST by a simple half-point, and by the fact that such increases are politically unpalatable.

However, the need to move more people in mass transit throughout Metro now and in the future is a reality, political and otherwise, and it will happen one financial way or the other.

And this brings me back to what I wrote a number of weeks ago: a .5% increase in the PST is the cheapest, most equitable way to raise the needed funds. Any increased charges (read that hidden taxes) on vehicle ownership and operation, from casual drivers to commuters to transport trucks hauling our groceries will invariably cost most, and target a more select group (motorists).

Everyone pays PST, and in Metro “everyone” includes transit users who may not have a car, who may live at home rent-free, who may otherwise not contribute to the real cost of their ride.

I don’t really care one way or the other, because for the number of times I might travel into potential tolling zones, or perhaps buy a few litres of gas within Metro, the cost will be negligible.

On the other hand, what does or does not affect me directly is also, in the grand scheme of things, irrelevant. The collective “we” in British Columbia will have to plan for current and future growth because it will occur whether we like it or not.

Municipal boundaries not withstanding, what happens in Metro is of consequence to folks in Abbotsford, Chilliwack and, albeit perhaps to a lesser extent, throughout the rest of the province.

We are all in this together. More fees on trucks that deliver our goods, provide our services and transport our building products will be passed on to all consumers regardless of where they live. A slight hike in the PST – 50 cents on a $100 expenditure – for those who will benefit from and use urban transit is sensible, fair, and despite the No-side claims of already being taxed to death, reasonable.

I can’t wait to hear what those successfully voting No say when, after rejecting the plebiscite, they see what fees will be later levied, without a vote, for the (and I stress) necessary transit improvements to come. markrushton@abbynews.com -Editor’s note: Mark Rushton is a columnist with The Star’s sister paper, The Abbotsford News.

VICTORIA – The B.C. government has made its most significant moves in decades to address the needs of some of the province’s poorest people.

The largest financial commitment is for a new program to help single parents escape from the welfare trap. There are 16,000 single parents in B.C. receiving provincial income assistance or disability payments, most of them women.

Even if they could find an entry-level job, it wouldn’t pay enough to cover the child care they would need to go to work. Worst of all, the current system requires that if they enrol in training, they lose their income assistance, including dental and extended medical care for themselves and their children.

That is the welfare trap, one of the most perverse government policies to have survived into our supposedly enlightened modern era.

The new program takes effect in September. It will not only continue income assistance payments when single parents enrol in skills training, it promises to cover their child care and transportation costs for an approved training program of up to one year.

Medical and child care costs will then be covered for up to a year after training, to allow a transition to employment.

Approved training means training for jobs that are identified as in demand, requiring high school and occupationspecific training that can be completed in a year or less.

They include retail sales, general office work and assistance jobs in health services.

Another overdue policy change is to double the allowable earnings for all income assistance recipients from $200 to $400 a month. This gives people a chance to improve their circumstances by taking whatever part-time or casual work they can manage, without having that little income cut from their already meagre welfare cheques.

And then there was the recent decision to end the claw-back of parental child support payments from income assistance payments.

The province has for many years run a costly child maintenance enforcement program to track down (mostly) deadbeat dads and force them to pay at least a token amount to support their children. Now when they pay child support to a single parent on income assistance, they will at least have the satisfaction of knowing the children actually receive the extra benefit.

These harsh, historic policies were built around a philosophy that welfare is a temporary last resort, to be withdrawn as soon as some other source of income is identified.

That is a valid if unfashionable position to take on behalf of working taxpayers who pay for all this, but it only makes sense if the income assistance recipient has a realistic option.

For those who are already in the entry-level job market, the minimum wage goes up 20 cents an hour in September, from $10.25 to $10.45. This is the beginning of an annual review that will tie the wage to the consumer price index.

A paltry sum, to be sure, but anyone who still thinks jacking the minimum wage up to $15 an hour is a magic solution that won’t cost some entry-level jobs is clinging to a socialist dream world. r * IBWF CFFO DPOUBDUFE CZ several low-income seniors who read my recent column on B.C.’s Seniors’ Advocate.

TransLink is broken and money will not fix the problem: it will just cover up their mistakes. #2. Giving money to politicians is like feeding bears: it’s never a good idea. #3. Bailing out TransLink by giving them more money is like trying to fix a boat with a hole in it by bailing it out. You may keep it afloat but it will not fix the problem. #4. Giving them money is like punishing a child for being bad by giving them a cookie. What’s worse is we are showing them where the cookie jar is. #5. Christy Clark has said that she will stay out of this but is voting “yes”.

How can the premier of our province say she is voting “yes” to more taxes but is staying out of it? If she really wanted to stay out of it, she would

not vote at all. #6. Let’s face it: Christy is not staying out of this for one second and as soon as this is over, regardless of the outcome, she will stick her nose back into TransLink and tell us where the next bridge needs to be built. This brings up several questions: Why are we being asked to fund TransLink when the premier is making all the decisions? Why isn’t the premier using the provincial budget? When she decides we need a bridge from West Vancouver to UBC or from Kitsilano to Vancouver, who is going to pay for it? Well don’t worry. They have a plan: they will use the same plan they used for the Golden Ears and Port Mann bridges. They will be tolled and the reasoning for it will be that TransLink is broke and the only way to build the much needed bridges is for users to pay for it. Which brings up another question: Why aren’t we just asking for the transit

users to pay more? #7. The side trying to get you to vote “yes” just spent $6 million of your money trying to get you to give them more money. If you think this money was spent wisely you are either a member of the TransLink board or your name is Christy Clark. #8. Regardless of what the yes side is saying, the only choice you have that will not cost you money is to vote “no”. Except of course all of the money your government has already spent trying to get you to vote “yes” and all the money they spent holding the plebiscite. Do you think they would have to hold a plebiscite if they wanted to lower taxes? #9. The good people of Aldergrove are being asked to pay the extra tax even though the new TransLink plan doesn’t include anything past Glover road. Sorry, Aldergrove. Bus service has been so bad in Aldergrove that they had to start their own trolley ser-

vice that TransLink refused to fund.

Aldergrove doesn’t even have a pool! We had a lake but it needed service and Metro Vancouver deemed it was too costly to repair so it was shut down. Ironically it is still called Aldergrove Lake Park and it has no bus service. #10. For everyone agonizing over this problem, relax. I have a solution.

First of all we need to identify the problem; it’s called accountability.

We’ve all heard politicians making promises and then breaking them; we’ve seen the waste, the poor planning, the excess … etc.

People make mistakes and politicians are people too. The problem is that they are not being held accountable. I have a plan, this is how it works: All promises made by politicians will be linked to their pensions.

For example, if the half a percent tax that they promised will not increase does, in fact, go up, all sitting politi-

cians will lose 20 per cent of their pensions. If TransLink cannot balance their budget with the half a percent, they lose 20 per cent of their pensions. If Christy cannot stay out of it and says a bridge needs to be built from Tsawwassen to Richmond she loses 20 per cent of her pension, etc. If all political promises were linked to the politicians? pensions, we would have accountability. We are, however, going to need someone to keep track of all the broken promises and I have just the person in mind: ME! I will do it for half a per cent of the salary of every politician that lies or breaks a promise, plus half a per cent of every pension that is reduced due to lying, cheating, stealing etc. Every dollar that I make over $100,000 I will donate back to TransLink. This should take care of any and all funding shortfalls.

Aldergrove business outlines reasons for ‘no’ vote Editor: This letter is to explain the NO position that the Directors of the Aldergrove Business Association have taken on the proposed regional transit sales tax. We have considered the position of the Mayor’s Council and, to become as informed as possible about the facts, provided an opportunity for Mayor Froese to speak to our members in January.

Although we agree that transit and road improvements are important, this particular tax penalizes communities like Aldergrove without improving local services. If this tax is approved, Aldergrove businesses, due to their location at the outer edge of the GVRD, will face additional pricing disparities with nearby

Abbotsford (outside of the region to be taxed). We already face challenges with cross border shopping, creating extensive retail vacancies throughout the downtown area of Aldergrove.

The proposed tax will compound the existing challenges our retailers face.

Unfortunately the Mayor’s plan offers nothing for the town of Aldergrove to offset these additional challenges. Our town has been abandoned by TransLink; our transit situation is currently not only inefficient, it is literally the end of the line for the GVRD. As a result, B.C. Transit now links our town with Abbotsford, creating a makeshift bus exchange right in the heart of our town, with a lengthy waiting period between buses and no public access

to washroom facilities. This makeshift exchange, combined with the retail vacancies in the downtown core, have resulted in an increase in petty crimes such as littering, theft, and graffiti.

Although we agree that transit improvements are needed, it doesn’t appear to us that Aldergrove is even on the radar for TransLink service improvements. The makeshift exchange is not listed as an official bus exchange on TransLink’s web page.

Aldergrove’s very large industrial complex, Gloucester Estates is not serviced by a single bus. By abandoning Aldergrove, TransLink has not only provided poor bus service but their negligence has also contrib-

uted to crime, litter, and defacing our town.

As we believe in always offering a positive spin, perhaps this is the opportunity for TransLink to consider building a proper transit exchange in Gloucester. Perhaps this is also the opportunity for Lower Mainland residents to realize just how out of touch TransLink is in the less densely populated areas of the Lower Mainland.

We encourage TransLink to find funding from within instead of simply raising taxes. A business can’t rely on raising prices year after year to expand; it needs to look within, build efficiencies, improve products and services, and create a larger customer base. TransLink needs to do the same - cutting waste and

building transit routes that serve the needs of all communities, not just a chosen few. The proposed regional sales tax seems like an easy way out, but offering no apparent benefit for Aldergrove residents or businesses.

As TransLink has proven to be ineffective in managing their core responsibility, we are highly suspect of their ability to understand the implications of their proposed tax.

Perhaps TransLink decision makers could consult throughout the entire GVRD area to better understand the service challenges instead of fighting amongst themselves over mega projects to determine who gets the biggest piece of the pie.

Tremendous support for Walk for Memories Editor: For four years, our caring, generous community has shown tremendous support for the LangleyAldergrove-Abbotsford Walk for Memories in aid of the Alzheimer Society of B.C. These annual “community group hugs”, which have been held at the Aldergrove Athletic Park on the last Sunday in January, have raised some $120,000 to help more than 70,000 British Columbians affected by dementia and to spread the word on

the rising tide of need.

The Alzheimer Society of Canada, based in Toronto, has now taken the much-anticipated step of creating a national Walk for Alzheimer’s Day. Since January is not perhaps an ideal month in which to hold an event on the Prairies or in Ontario (and which has proved challenging even for us in the Valley), it will be held each year (starting in 2016) on the first Sunday in May. Unfortunately for our event, this date conflicts with the Langley Walk,

now in its 52nd year — a community coming-together without a political, charitable or other agenda.

The Alzheimer Society of B.C. is exploring the idea of an Abbotsford walk, perhaps at Mill Lake park.

The population base would seem to support such a notion and the society would be interested in hearing from anyone who would like to help make this happen.

Comment: Slight improvements to Langley transit in works Monday’s telephone town hall on the proposed 0.5 per cent sales tax increase to fund transit and transportation projects proved two things.

One is that Langley residents are remarkably patient and polite. The other is that the boost in sales tax will improve things modestly in the western part of Langley, and other than two road projects, do nothing for the areas east of Murrayville.

Langley Township Mayor Jack Froese made it clear that there will be no improvements to bus service to Aldergrove. There will be no service to Gloucester industrial estates.

There will be no routes in rural areas.

Fraser Highway will be widened and 16 Avenue will be improved.

The good news is that there will be a bus on 208 Street in Willoughby and significant improvements to

service on 200 Street and Fraser Highway — north and west of Langley City. LRT is 12 years away, at a minimum. Brookswood and Fernridge will see some modest improvements.

In terms of patience and politeness, none of the people who got through the screeners to speak to Froese were rude or angry. Some do not favour the tax increase — but

two said they’re voting ‘yes.’ They asked questions about the cost of the ‘yes’ campaign, the likelihood of the tax being increased and salaries paid to TransLink officials.

Whether those who were on the phone, or watched the town hall on YouTube, will be convinced to vote ‘yes’ remains to be seen. However, they did get a lot of additional information, which should at least help

some of them make their minds up.

The boost in sales tax will hurt many Langley businesses. This issue did not come up. But it is a fact — and Aldergrove businesses are particularly vulnerable. Thus far, no one other than the Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce and Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses seems willing to stand up for them.

There are no rats and nary a dram of whiskey to be found but, other than those missing elements, the McKnight Trench, dug out of the dirt behind Port Moody Station Museum, is as authentic a First World War re-creation as any you will find in this century.

But the heavy labour and intricate construction have already drawn a number of visitors and stares as people drive by the project off Murray Street on their way past Rocky Point Park.

“We get a lot of second looks, a lot of rubbernecking,” Black said.

The trench was designed by Goheen based on authentic trench plans and includes many of the reinforcement, observation and protection elements one would normally find in a WWI trench lived in

Transit vote could affect Abbotsford

As Metro Vancouver voters prepare to vote on a plebiscite that would see a 0.5 per cent regional sales tax pay for billions of dollars worth of transit improvements, the referendum also has implications for the rest of the Valley that go beyond even TransLink’s ambitious plans.

Among a rash of improvements, including 400 more buses across the region, TransLink’s intentions would see a light rail (LRT) line connect Langley City with the SkyTrain system. The sales tax, meanwhile, wouldn’t apply east of Langley.

But for Abbotsford, that closer rapid transit connection – the construction of which could take 12 years – would probably have less of an impact than would a solution to Metro Vancouver’s entrenched transit and funding issues.

Coun. Patricia Ross pointed to a Fraser Valley Regional District study that looked at commuting habits in the Valley and which found Abbotsford to be a relatively self-contained city, with relatively few commuters beyond its neighbours.

Whether that would change much with an improved transit

system is unknown, but even an efficient rapid transit connection between Langley and Vancouver is probably unlikely to reduce an Abbotsford resident’s commute time significantly.

What could have an impact, Ross said, is if an improved transit system takes vehicles off Metro Vancouver roads and out of the way of Abbotsford enterprises transporting products through the region.

“We do have a lot of businesses that do need to get their product to markets west and that is often by truck, and they usually need it done in a timely manner, so if transportation improvements are not made to improve congestion, it could cause difficulties for businesses here,” she said.

Chamber of Commerce executive director Allan Asaph agreed, noting that disruption to the flow of trucks between the Fraser Valley and Vancouver and its ports impacts businesses in Abbotsford.

The result of the referendum could also have an impact on how British Columbians pay for transit.

The proposed 0.5 per cent sales tax is a novel formula and one that, if approved, could be used as a model in other communities. If it fails, which seems more than possible,

other approaches will have to be considered.

“How they deal with the issues in Vancouver will probably have an effect with how we deal with them out here,” Asaph said.

The chamber has come out in favour of the proposed regional sales tax because that would be a fair way to pay for improvements, he said.

The referendum is being held solely in Metro Vancouver communities in which the proposed transit expansions would take place Meanwhile, for dreamers who would one day like to see a rapid transit connection between Abbotsford and Vancouver, a Langley LRT line would seem to bring that dream closer to reality.

But that may be premature, Ross said, because the province says Abbotsford does not yet have enough people to support such a service.

Still, there would be more pressure to connect Abbotsford to a Langley LRT line, said John Belec, an associate professor of geography and the environment at the University of the Fraser Valley.

Mission, on the other hand, could see an impact from additional West Coast Express capacity that is proposed.

BlackPress4Good making a difference Aldergrove Star

Since BlackPress4Good launched last fall, positive things have been occurring in B.C. communities.

Extra food is being delivered to hungry children; an animal rescue has purchased much-needed supplies; and a single father is staying at home to care for his fouryear-old who suffers from a rare, life-threatening disorder.

Amidst rebuilding in the wake of the Fraser Valley’s avian flu crisis, Langley egg farmer Bodo Goetzke is not letting tough times thwart his commitment to help one of Canada’s most poverty-stricken neighbourhoods.

He is one of 150 turkey and egg farmers who not only maintained their commitment to provide Union Gospel Mission with turkey and eggs throughout the year — they have exceeded it. Raising $92,700, nearly $20,000 more than last year, these farmers allow UGM to include desperately-needed protein in many of the 320,000 meals provided in both Vancouver’s downtown eastside and New Westminster.

“It affects everyone,” said Ray Nickel, B.C. Poultry Association president. “About 280,000 birds have been destroyed, and there is compensation for that but it gets complicated for farms in close vicinity. They end up under quarantine, unable to restock, and lose customers with barriers to trade, but don’t receive compensation.”

According to Nickel, the impact far exceeds financial distress.

“It’s a huge amount of emotional and physical stress for farmers — the destruction, composting, disinfecting and restocking — it takes a toll.”

Goetzke is one of the farmers whose farming has been disrupted because of geography. He explains why the added workload and financial stress have not deterred his generosity of time and funds.

“Regardless of what goes on we’ve been blessed in this industry.

Guys are sticking to their word and just stepping up to the plate. We made a commitment to UGM, and you don’t just walk away from that overnight,” said Goetzke.

Goetzke has been a driving force behind the funds raised from farmers. He was an integral part of creating — and now maintaining — the annual golf tournament

A Langley man who was in a car crash in 2008 has now been awarded a $1.1 million settlement from ICBC. The 33-year-old was awarded the settlement by Justice Williams in New Westminster Supreme Court on Feb. 13.

He took action for damages resulting from injuries sustained in three separate crashes he was involved in.

The judge awarded him $91,226 for housekeeping, house maintenance and yard work up until he is 75.

He currently rents so doesn’t require yard or house maintenance.

The judge awarded him nonpecuniary damages of $125,000; past income loss of $125,000, further income loss of $800,000, cost of future care is $43,600 and special damages is $11,591.

A Langley RCMP police car was damaged but thankfully no one was hurt when a man was arrested in a stolen vehicle on March 21.

The 1993 brown Toyota Corolla was reported stolen in Langley on March 13.

Police were called on the morning of March 21 when a resident in the Willoughby area noticed the Corolla parked in a residential driveway where no one should be home.

The Langley officer arrived and noticed there was a window missing from the driver’s side rear door, the license plate had been changed and there was a man sleeping in the driver’s seat. The male woke and began to converse with the officer. Initially, he provided an incorrect name but the officer was able to discern a correct identity.

Once it was confirmed the vehicle was stolen, the officer called for additional police to attend and instructed the man to exit the vehicle. The driver did not comply; he started the car, rolled up the window and put the vehicle into reverse. He backed down the driveway and drove across the front lawn of the residence. The car went over a tree became hung up on a small garden and the curbing of the roadway.

He was able to get the vehicle onto the roadway and turned a nearby corner striking the investigating officer’s parked police car. The Corolla came to a stop immediately following the collision. The driver was again ordered to exit the vehicle but he did not comply. He kept shifting the vehicle from drive to reverse in an apparent attempt to flee, however, the vehicle was not responding due to the damage sustained in the crash.

Soccer seniors host ‘spring fling’

Aldergrove hosts the Barry Bauder Memorial Men’s and Spring Fling Women’s Soccer Tournament this weekend, March 27 to March 29 at Aldergrove Athletic Park, 26715 - 27 Avenue.

There are four men’s divisions: Over 60’s, Over 50’s, Over 40’s, Open Mens 7 v 7, and three women’s divisions: Classics, Open Recreational and Open Competitive.

Competing in the men’s Over 60’s are CCSS, First Capital FC, Ben United SC, The Witch, and Aldergrove United.

The men’s Over 50’s Group 1 are Aldergrove United, Serbia FC, Chilliwack FC, and Group 2 are BC Transit, Blue Chips

and Woodys FC. The men’s Over 40’s teams are AAP Central, Maple Ridge, Coq City FC, Aldergrove United and TCCS. Mens Open 7 A Side include Group 1, Aldergrove United, Lightning FC, Old Settlers FC, and Group 2 are Lightning FC 2, Team Gav and Highlanders.

Womens Classics teams include Aftershock, Benders, Coastal Surf and Poco Cougars.

Womens Open Rec teams include Abby Steelers, Aldergrove FX, Aldergrove United and Miller Ladies.

Games start times on Saturday are 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m. 2:30 p.m., and 4 p.m. with action on all the Athletic Park area fields.

Team Yamaoka scored majors on their first drive and their final drive of the opening half of play en route to a 22-7 victory over Team Beatty at the 2015 Senior Bowl game held at McLeod Stadium in Langley on Saturday, March 21.

Team Yamaoka, led by and named after Kamloops Broncos head coach Brad Yamaoka, jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after QB Mihai Lapuste (Handsworth Royals) connected with REC Cory McCoy (Rutland Voodoos) right out of the gate.

Team Yamaoka would double

their lead with less than a minute left in the opening half with RB Brock Zeleniski (Mt. Boucherie Bears) scoring on a six-yard rush.

Yamaoka would add a single point on a rouge to lead 15-0 at half-time.

Team Yamaoka would increase their lead to 22-0 in the third quarter with QB Rylan Matters (Duchess Park Condors) finding the end zone.

Team Beatty, led by and named after Okanagan Sun head coach Shane Beatty, broke the shutout late in the fourth quarter on a score with QB Colby Peters (North Surrey Bears) connecting with

REC Matt Oye (Meadow Ridge Knights) in the end zone.

Team Beatty had a chance to cut into Team Yamaoka’s lead in the opening half but had a promising drive snuffed out by an interception

REGISTER FOR SPRING SOCCER Aldergrove Youth Soccer Club is again operating a Spring Soccer program this year. The program is endorsed and approved by BC Soccer and has an emphasis on fun and fitness, with a chance to play with old friends as well as make new ones.

New this year, AYSC will be running an optional Wednesday evening training session for older players, U9-2007 to U12-2004 only, for a small additional fee. This will be a “skills and drills” type setting led by experienced AYSC coaches. Five days, three meets, dozens of swimmers and a whole lot of medals for the Langley Olympians Swim Club.

Members of the club were scattered in pools around the province, with strong showings in all three.

At the Swim B.C. AAA short course (25-metre pool) championships, which was hosted by the Surrey Knights Swim Club, the Olympians finished fourth overall.

Hugh McNeill led the way with five gold and two silver medals.

McNeill, 11, won gold in the 50 back, 100 back, 200 back, 200 free, 400 free and silvers in the 200 and 400 IM events.

Joshua Kim, 13, won a pair of gold in the 50 and 100 breast. He also set new club records in both events.

Chelsea Borrowdale, 15, won gold in the 200 breast and silver in the 400 IM and 800 free. She also took bronze in the 100 breast.

Renae Ledoux, 15, won gold in the 50 breast, 100 breast and bronze in the 200 breast.

Bailey Herbert, 13, won a pair of bronze medals in the 100 and 200 breast and Brayden Kells, 13, won silver in the 200 breast.

The Olympians also grabbed some medals in the relay events.

Ryan Hunter, Dylan Thomas, Hugh McNeill and John Park won gold in the boys 11 and under 200 medley relay, as did the 14/15 girls team of Robyn Nakano, Renae Ledoux, Gabby Szalkai and Chelsea Borrowdale.

Two other relay teams also found the podium, with the quartet of McNeill, Hunter, Thomas and

Michael Chung winning silver in the 11 and under 400 free. McNeill, Chung, Thomas and Park won bronze in the 200 free relay as well.

Another achievement at the meet was Ledoux and Borrowdale both achieving their senior national qualifying times in the 200 breast.

Following that meet, members of the Olympians attended the Swim BC senior open meet at the UBC Aquatic Centre in Vancouver.

The meet was a long course (50 metre pool) event and for those who had achieved two or more 16 and over AAA qualifying times.

Borrowdale, Hillary Metcalfe (16), David Pinsky (18) and Justin Schramm (17) represented the Langley club.

It’s motoring time in Fort Langley with the Langley Area Mostly British Motoring Club (LAMB) presenting the 10th annual St. George’s British Motoring show. On April 26th, up to 100 cars, trucks, military vehicles and a Double Decker bus will be on the grounds of the Fort Langley Community hall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“Ten years ago we began our first show with Fort Langley,” said John Walkden, current president and a founding member of the LAMB club. “We never realized that our show would be here 10 years later and still popular with the general public.”

This year is the 60th anniversary of the MGA , one of Britain’s’ best known sports cars. A good field of these cars are expected along with MG. Triumph, Rolls Royce, Jaguar, Morris, Austin, Land Rover, Morgan, Jensen, British taxis, Austin Healey and other Marques.

Another addition this year is a British Military showing of a Ferret, and a Sopwith Camel airplane from the Canadian Museum of Flight.

The club has also organized a silent auction with some great prize packages for the participants and the general public. There is no charge to view the cars and only a $10 fee to register your vehicle at the show. Net proceeds from the show are donated the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Langley. Cycling spring series hits halfway point Aldergrove Star

About 100 hundred cyclists took part in the Wix Brown 6.5km road race in the Township on March 8.

The race was part of the Spring Series 2015, a series of 10 races held throughout Langley, Aldergrove DAN FERGUSON PHOTO and Abbotsford.

Kinney and Lamoureux were also first and second, respectively, at the March 15 Aldergrove East Road Race, while Lamoureux and Davies were first and second at the March 22 Aldergrove Long Road Race.

‘Environmental Hero’ nominations open Aldergrove Star

Marking the first day of spring, Langley MP Mark Warawa joined other members of the 2015 Langley Environmental Hero nominations committee in announcing that nominations for this year’s Environmental Hero awards are now open.

All Langley residents are invited to submit nominations before the deadline of May 6, 2015. Winners will be announced on Saturday, June 6, 2015 at the Fort Langley National Historic Site, and will be recognized with a plaque and a heritage apple tree to be planted in their honour. The three categories include: youth, individual, and group or business.

This year’s nominations committee has been expanded to include more community leaders who encourage environmental stewardship in Langley. The new members include TD Canada Trust Branch Manager Gary Aulakh (Willowbrook branch) and the Township of Langley Mayor Jack Froese. Members of the committee who have been

involved with the awards in previous years and continue to lend their support are: Langley Environmental Partners Society (LEPS), Fort Langley National Historic Site, The Langley Times, and MP Mark Warawa.

“We are pleased to invite all Langley residents to join in recognizing the hard work of those who give their time and energy to promote environmental stewardship in Langley,” said Warawa.

“Environmental stewardship is vital to preserving our communities, forests, rivers and wildlife. If you know of one or more local heroes who have taken the initiative to do something positive for the environment, we’d like to hear about it.”

and abilities. This day-long event includes lunch and runs from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., covering topics like diversity, boundaries, expectations, self-care and being part of a team.

The Volunteer Symposium developed as a way to for the Volunteer Network Group of the Upper Fraser Valley to celebrate all the fantastic volunteers in the Fraser Valley region as a part of National Volunteer Week.

Speakers for this event include Janet Hutchinson from the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve, Cari Moore from Volunteer Chilliwack, Pam Logan from the Canadian Cancer Society, Marjorie Perzow,

a volunteer with the Chilliwack Hospice Society and Theresia Reid from the Chilliwack Cultural Centre.

Following last year’s hugely successful event, this year promises to be better than ever – and a wonderful opportunity for local volunteers to connect with their peers, as well as expand their knowledge and skill sets.
