But Beech notes, communities also have to take responsibility to ensure a doctor will be as happy with the match as the community may be.

Salmon Arm doctor Stacey Kirkman agrees.

From South Africa, Kirkman says that following a stint as the only doctor in a small community in Saskatchewan, he headed to B.C. What attracted him to Salmon Arm is the fact there is a hospital in which general physicians can be involved with patient care.

“It was important that I could do care, do maternity and I wanted to do emergency,” he says.

“I wanted to maintain my skills and do full-service GP work.”

As well, Kirkman says for a doctor who lives in an outlying community, admitting a patient and then having to drive 30 minutes or more to see them at the hospital can be onerous.

On a personal note, Kirkman says Salmon Arm provides services for all members of the family – shopping, theatre, restaurants and extracurricular programs for children.

After being the sole doctor in a community,

Kirkman was also attracted by the collegiality of working and interacting with other doctors.

“For me, I wouldn’t have settled somewhere else,” he says, noting the smaller rural communities might be ideal for a semi-retired physician who wants to take it a bit easier.

Beech meanwhile, says Global Medics can help as can the community in making itself attractive to a doctor.

In terms of cost for the service, Beech says no money changes hands until the community offers a doctor a position and it is accepted.

At that point, half the recruitment fee is transferred. The other half comes due when the doctor arrives and starts work. As well, Global Medics’ fee could be negotiated based on the number of doctors involved.

With North Shuswap, South Shuswap and Sicamous in need of doctors, a single (familiarization and interview) trip with several doctors could be arranged.

the group it will never be less than six months and more likely anywhere from nine months to a year – and that depends on the diligence of both sides.

“I think it’s important that all the reps that were at the meeting need to go back to communities and try to get support to consider this,” says Beech.

“The money has to come from somewhere; it is an investment.”

Sicamous was well-represented at the meeting with Mayor Terry Rysz and Coun. Malcolm Makayev attending. Sicamous Chamber of Commerce executive director Michelle Wolff attended as did Janet McClean Senft, who represented the Eagle Valley Community Support Society.

Also in attendance was Columbia Shuswap Regional District South Shuswap director Paul Demenok, who has some concerns about the doctors’ limited time commitment to the host community.

“The physician will come for two or three years and is then free to leave,” he says, noting the doctors have to have jobs in order to gain entry

to the country. “When I asked for statistics, (about length stay) he was unable to provide them. But he did suggest most will stay.”

Demenok says he has mixed feelings about the Global Medics service and would like to reflect on and discuss it further.

North Shuswap Health Centre Society cochairperson Pat Roberston was more enthusiastic.

The society has long been working to attract a doctor through Interior Health and telemedicine and looking at international recruiters.

She was pleased with Global Medics’ presentation and says company rep Phil Martin was enthusiastic about finding a doctor for the North Shuswap clinic.

“It has been such a hard push in an unfamiliar environment for the North Shuswap Health Centre Physician Recruitment Team that it was very encouraging to hear something so positive,” Robertson says. “We do not have stars in our eyes yet, but we are considering going with this international recruiter - we have nothing to lose, but we will need approval at our board meeting next week.”

Health care auxilliary helps CT scan upgrade The women of the Shuswap Lake Health-Care Auxilliary have done it again.

Thanks to them the CT scan upgrade for Shuswap Lake General Hospital has reached its goal.

The new technology provides a significant enhancement to patient care and well-being at Shuswap Lake General Hospital, says Fiona Harris, the foundation’s director of development.

The Shuswap Hospital Foundation board of directors made a commitment to raise the $205,00 needed to purchase the upgrade in October 2013 and funding raising began immediately.

And, once again, the community responded with generosity and the CT scan upgrade was ordered and installed in July, 2014.

A total of $17,785 was still needed to complete the goal and the Shuswap Lake Health-Care Auxiliary Have stepped up to the plate.

Doctors support hospital fundraising Something fishy is going on at Shuswap Lake General Hospital.

Doctors John Wickert and Maureen McTavish have fish bearing their names hanging on the hospital’s Recognition Wall.

The fish, in four categories – bronze, silver, gold and platinum are hung in recognition of donors who reach a particular level of giving.

Not only do both doctors believe strongly in giving to the foundation, they are hoping others will contribute towards their own fish.

“The key is, we’re doing it as members of the community; our kids, our neighbours, our colleagues and our friends live here,” says McTavish. “And the days of everything being provided by the taxpayer are over.”

Even though governments direct more money to health care every year, the cost of providing care is much higher than it was.

For example, heart attack victims have a much better chance of surviving, but the clot-busting drugs, angioplasties and open-heart surgeries that save lives, also cost a lot more.

McTavish says all communities are having to figure out what their health-care needs are and then fundraise in order to fulfill some of them.

McTavish is extremely proud of Salmon Arm’s generosity, considering its size, demographics and income.

“They have been so generous and that’s what it’s going to take,” she says pointing out that the $1.5 million raised in one year to buy the CT scanner was amazing, but people have to start looking at the need for funding as an ongoing process, not a one-time goal.

McTavish, who is a member of the board of the Shuswap Lake Hospital Foundation, says the organization is always looking at how they can continue to raise funds.

As well as encouraging doctors to contribute to the foundation, a voluntary payroll deduction for hospital staff will be rolled out.

At $5 a pay for 500 employees, that’s $60,000 a year to put toward health care in the Shuswap.

Program helps seniors stay in their home Shuswap Better at Home is a senior’s non medical support services program that is funded by the Province of BC through the United Way of the Lower Mainland. The program was designed to help seniors to remain in their own home. Eagle Valley Community Support Society, based in Sicamous, manages the Shuswap program. EVCSS has learned a great deal during this first year of developing the program and providing services. We are nearing completion of a volunteer recruitment, training and management package, a contractor package, and a comprehensive set of guidelines that programs and organizations we work with can follow to ensure we can all provide safe, vetted, insured services.

We have tried to be sensitive to the unique qualities and challenges of Shuswap communities and have received good support from existing groups and

the advisory groups formed in the beginning. It has become clearer as we have tried to develop equal access to supports that we must strive to build the same program in each community, and that each community must become responsible for its program.

It was the dream of EVCSS when they agreed to take this on that Better at Home would become a program where all seniors would know the name and what it is, and know that when they needed it, they would be welcome to sign up. We hoped communities of the Shuswap would be prepared to work on developing the necessary supports to keep our seniors in their homes and in their communities, knowing that by building a solid program, it will be there for all of us someday. This is what makes a community, and we hope we can succeed in making the Shuswap a model for really great and responsive Better at Home programs. During the month of April, EVCSS Executive Director Janet McClean Senft and Shuswap Better at Home Coordinator Wysteria Sholtz will visit Shuswap communities to discuss the program and the goals for year two. CSRD supports request for health funding What began as a request for a letter of support regarding nurse practitioners, became a resolution to two B.C. government associations.

At the January board meeting, Columbia Shuswap Regional District directors heard a request from Area C South Shuswap Paul Demenok to send a letter to the B.C. Health Minister Terry Lake asking for operating funds for Sorrento’s Community Health Centre.

The centre, which opened in November 2013, has proven to be highly successful. Nurse practitioner Judy Deringer now has more than 900 patients.

“She’s seeing people full-time four days a week, and on the other day she’s doing paperwork and home visits. And she’s doing a great job,” says Demenok, noting nurse practitioners can deliver 90 to 95 per cent of what a family doctor can, including diagnose and prescribe treatment, order tests and more. “And the feedback is positive; people are very happy with the care.”

Where the community is not happy is in having to raise the approximately $50,000 needed to operate the health centre.

Deringer’s salary is paid for by Interior Health, but operating expenses, overhead and supplies are not covered.

“This is a non-sustainable process, because it puts the onus on the community,” says Demenok, pointing out Canadians are used to free health care and not always willing to donate for that care.

“People question why do we have to pay for a nurse practitioner and it comes back to the program is flawed.”

Demenok says that, to his knowledge, Sorrento is the first B.C. location where a nurse practitioner works alone without being ‘nested’ in a clinic with a doctor.

“Their overheads are absorbed to some degree by the doctors,” he says, noting the same goes for supplies. “I think it is also important to note (pharmacist) Colin Munro has heroically supported the centre and its costs out of his own pocket up to this point, but I don’t think it’s fair to expect he will continue to support this into perpetuity.”

CSRD directors agreed, unanimously approving a resolution to the Southern Interior Local Government Association and Association of Kootenay-Boundary asking them to lobby the provincial government “to immediately support the funding of overhead and operating costs for nurse practitioners through the province in order to effectively utilize this form of primary health-care

provider delivery service.”

Demenok has another reason for supporting nurse practitioners.

“I think nurse practitioners represent an important health-care option that’s particularly practical in a rural setting,” he said. “A nurse practitioner centred in a community health centre setting is an option to provide good health care. The success of the health centre in Sorrento would support that.”

The two most common childhood vision issues are a crossed or wandering eye and uneven focus.

Vision problems in children typically emerge when the child is between 18 months and four years old. When a child has a wandering eye, that eye will appear to drift during conversation or when the child is attempting to do something else, like watch television. A crossed eye is often easy to recognize, but few may know that a crossed eye is not a problem of the eye itself but rather the wiring of the brain. When a child has uneven focus, he or she will have one eye that is more farsighted than the other. Uneven focus is more difficult to detect because kids are unaware their vision is being

compromised by poor focus. Such focus issues are all kids have known, so they are less likely to ask for help, believing that poor focus is natural. These issues are treatable, but wandering or crossed eyes and uneven focus require medical attention, as kids who do not receive adequate medical care regarding their vision run the risk that their brains will begin to ignore images coming from the weaker eye. Once the brain begins to ignore those images, nerve connections stop being developed as well. When these issues go untreated, children may experience full and permanent vision loss in their weaker eye, and that loss may be apparent by the time a child reaches his or her tenth birthday.

Dream Vacation or Holiday Nightmare?

Whether your clan is off to Disneyland or spending a few nights at the Grandparents’, Spring Break often marks the beginning of a season of travel.

Here are a few sleep tips for traveling with kids: 1. Don’t over-schedule. It’s tempting to pack each day with adventure, but in the end you’ll simply end up with overtired children…and no one will be having fun. Keep it simple!

2. Remain diligent with your bedtime routine. Even though you’re in a different place, following the same sequence of events at bedtime can be very reassuring for a child and help to prepare them for sleep even in a strange place.

3. Do your best to re-create their home sleep environment. Bring their special toy or blanket, use white-noise if you do at home, and bring along their bed sheets! Keep the room as dark as possible, and if you’re not a bed-sharing family, bring along a playpen if your hotel doesn’t supply cribs. If sharing a room with your child, try to create a visual barrier between your beds (a curtain or dresser will work well).

4. Maintain regular naps and bedtimes. I know this can be difficult when on holidays, but you will enjoy time with your children significantly more when they are well-rested. Happy children are worth leaving a party early or missing out on a sightseeing tour!

5. Be patient. It’s normal for babies and toddlers to test their sleep boundaries when they’re in a new place. Provide the reassurance and comfort they need while doing your best to remain consistent. It will get better!

Copper Island Seniors Resource Center The Copper Island Seniors Resource Center in Blind Bay provides information and coordinates services for seniors in the South Shuswap. To support this mission in 2015, CISRC received an Age Friendly Community Planning and Projects Grant through the BC Ministry of Health’s Seniors Housing and Support Initiative to promote agefriendly communities.

More than 34 volunteers assist the Centre by staffing the office and participating in the following programs and services: 1) Information Resource: Call or visit CISRC— our extensive library has details on services and programs, and we can help with government forms and applications. We can direct you to contacts within IHA, the Nurse Practitioner in Sorrento or suggest other community care options.

2) Services Coordination: We maintain a matrix of services and recommended service providers available to offer maintenance and support that will enable seniors to remain in their homes as they age.

3) Foot Care: A registered nurse offers Foot

Care at our facility on a monthly basis for a fee. 4) Massage: A registered masseuse will provide seated massage at our facility on a bi-weekly basis.

5) Seniors Computer tutoring: Volunteer mentors offer computer training on a one-on-one basis. In the near future we will offer an expanded program in partnership with the Literacy Alliance of the South Shuswap (LASS). Tutorials for Apple products are offered from time to time depending on demand.

6) Seniors Grocery Shopping: In cooperation with local grocers, our volunteers will assist with the shopping and transport of groceries on a weekly basis as required.

7) Seniors Driving Seniors: Local transport can be provided by appointment on a cost basis to augment the services currently provided by Sorrento Hospice and Sorrento Drop-in.

8) Seniors Lunch: We coordinate a local biweekly lunch to offer opportunity for a hearty, lowcost meal and social interaction.

Calming relaxation techniques Data from the 2012 Canadian Community Health Survey revealed that nearly 23 percent of Canadians aged 15 and older reported that most days were “quite a bit or extremely stressful.” While those figures marked a slight improvement from the previous year’s survey, it’s apparent that stress is still a considerable concern for people throughout both the United States and Canada.

Though many people unfortunately regard stress as an inevitable side effect of adulthood,it’s important that men, women and even children avoid characterizing stress as simply a by product of a difficult and/or successful life and career. Even momentary stress, often referred to as “acute stress,” like the kind that appears when stuck in a traffic jam, can have a potentially devastating impact on overall health. According to the American Institute of Stress, acute stress causes an increase in heart rate and stronger contractions of the heart muscle, and some medical professionals have suggested there is a link between repeated episodes of acute stress and heart attack.

Regular use of relaxation techniques to reduce stress can help to counteract the effects of long-term stress, which the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine notes can contribute to depression, digestive disorders, headaches, high blood pressure, and insomnia. Meditation There are many types of meditation, but in general people who meditate employ certain techniques when meditating.These techniques may include maintaining a specific posture or finding a quiet, distraction-free

location to meditate. Many practitioners of meditation choose to recite a positive mantra that they repeat throughout their session. While many people question the effectiveness of meditation, research has suggested that routine meditation sessions can alter the brain’s neural pathways and make a person more capable of combatting stress.

Short naps improve performance According to the National Sleep Foundation, a short nap of 20 to 30 minutes can improve alertness and performance without creating feelings of grogginess or interfering with nighttime sleep. While napping can be beneficial, it can also have a negative impact as well. For example, those who nap too late in the day may struggle to get a decent night’s rest later that night. Sugar not so sweet for your health Men and women often joke about needing their daily “sugar fix.” But the American Heart Association notes that the average American is consuming nearly twice the amount of sugar he or she should be, a mistake that could be jeopardizing sugar consumers’ long-term health.

If sugar is a staple of your diet, then the following are a handful of factors that might make you reconsider your relationship with the sweet stuff. * Sugar may increase risk of diabetes. Studies have shown a link between sugar consumption and diabetes. A study published in the journal Diabetes Care revealed that subjects who drank one to two servings of sugar per day were 26 percent more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those who drank one serving of sugar per month or none at all. Sugarsweetened beverages contribute to weight gain, and overweight and obesity are risk factors for diabetes.

A sugar high may temporarily boost your mood, but researchers from Baylor College of Medicine discovered a correlation between sugar consumption and depression. Keep skin healthy by using sunscreen The best way to care for skin is to be smart about sun exposure. Too much unprotected exposure to the sun can cause a host of problems, from premature wrinkling to skin cancer.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, millions of cases of skin cancer are reported each year, and many more may go undetected. The best way to protect skin from the sun is to stay out of the sun. When that is not feasible, using a broad-spectrum sunscreen can guard against damage from ultraviolet radiation.

Although sunscreen is an enormous help, it is not foolproof. Sunburns and skin damage can occur even when using sunscreen, and user error accounts for much of that damage. To get the best results from any sunscreen product, consumers can educate themselves about proper application and avoid certain information inaccuracies.

Myth: The best sunscreen is the one with the highest SPF. Actually, the best sunscreen is the one you will use regularly. Make sure you like the scent and the feel of the sunscreen. Decide if you prefer a sunscreen that is grouped together with a moisturizer or a makeup foundation. Try sunscreens that are lotions or sticks to figure out which application works best for you. Once you’ve found a product you like, stick with it. But make sure the sunscreen has an adequate sun protection factor, or SPF. Myth: I only need sunscreen on sunny days. The sun can prove harmful even on cloudy days. You may not be safe indoors, either, particularly if you spend a good deal of time next to an open window.

indoors or riding in a car. It’s a good habit to apply sunscreen daily regardless of if you will be out in the sun.

Myth: Spray sunscreens are as effective as the rest.

Spray products may not deliver enough sunscreen to the skin because droplets are dispersed unevenly.

Furthermore, the propellents used in spray sunscreens could be harmful if inhaled. Opt for sunscreens that are applied by hand and can be adequately coated over all areas of the skin.

Myth: Sunscreen does not need to be reapplied, especially if it’s water-resistant. There is no such thing as a waterproof sunscreen. The Food and Drug Administration recently prohibited the use of the term “waterproof ” because consumers falsely believed their sunscreen products would not wash off. Water-resistant sunscreens will be effective for a certain number of minutes before they need to be reapplied, usually between 40 to 90 minutes. If you have been sweating profusely or have been in the pool or ocean for awhile, play it safe and reapply often.

Myth: A little drop of sunscreen is all that’s needed. Many people are applying far too little sunscreen to protect themselves from the sun. The average person needs about an ounce of lotion to cover his or her entire body. Think about the size of a shot glass and use that amount.

Myth: Spending more money on SPF 50 will get me superior protection. The rate of protection from SPF 30 to SPF 50 is marginal. SPF 30 (when applied correctly) can protect against 97 percent of UVB rays. That’s adequate for many people. It’s most important to choose a sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays.

Gluten sensitivity may link gut and gland (NC) More than six million Canadians are eating glutenfree diets, while fewer than one million of them have actually been medically diagnosed as sensitive to gluten.

Here’s an interesting statistic unearthed by a recent survey: 14 percent of those diagnosed with either gluten sensitivity or celiac disease, a severe form of sensitivity to gluten, said they had also been diagnosed with thyroid disease.

In fact, individuals with celiac disease are almost three times more likely than the general population to be diagnosed with thyroid disease.

Dr. Wendy Rosenthall, an endocrinologist in Toronto, explains: “Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that occurs in about one in 100 Canadians. It is often associated with other disorders of the immune system, such as autoimmune hypothyroidism, and diabetes mellitus.

“It’s essential to your overall health to have a normally functioning thyroid gland,” she continues, “because your thyroid produces the hormones that regulate your growth, your maturation and the speed of your metabolism.

“Thyroid hormones influence your metabolic rate, first, by stimulating the production of proteins in almost every tissue in your body – and second, by increasing the amount of oxygen that your cells use.”

An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) causes your metabolism to slow down. That may lead to a variety of symptoms such as fatigue, depression, increased sensitivity to cold, unexplained weight gain, constipation and muscle weakness.

If you are experiencing any of those symptoms, ask your doctor for a TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) blood test. Most of the time, hypothyroidism is easily diagnosed and treated.

How to make school lunch healthier The benefits of a healthy diet are clear and well documented. In addition to providing the nutrients a growing body needs, consuming a balanced diet helps children maintain a healthy weight. Obesity continues to be a growing problem among schoolaged children and can contribute to the onset of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, and many other adverse medical conditions.

A healthy lunch provides sound nutrition to give students energy to do well in school and for the rest of the day. Children who do not eat well at lunch may have difficulty concentrating, while others may feel sluggish or tired.

Canada is one of the few leading industrialized countries that does not have a national nutrition strategy to implement healthy school lunches. It’s estimated that only 10 to 15 percent of Canadian children have access to school meals. These meals are not provided by a well-funded national program, but by a patchwork of individual volunteer efforts, some provincial government funding and corporate donations.

Whether students purchase lunch from school or bring lunch from home, there are ways to guarantee a more diverse offering and better nutrition. Here are some guidelines to follow. * Offer nutrient-dense foods. Foods should contribute to the daily recommended amounts of protein, iron, calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin C. Provide a selection of foods, such as lean protein, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, that will give children the nutrients they need. Nutrient-dense foods also help kids feel fuller, longer. * Limit fat intake. Avoid foods that do not get their fat from polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. Saturated fats can lead to obesity and clogged

arteries. Fish, nuts and olives are healthy fat sources. * Let kids choose some of their food. Allow kids to pick some of the healthy foods they will be eating.

Giving kids a say in their diets will make them more likely to enjoy their lunches and cut back on snack foods. Eating meals regularly will keep energy levels up during school and make kids less likely to reach for unhealthy snacks to fill hunger gaps. * Make small changes that add up. Switching from white bread to whole grain breads, and opting for low-fat dairy products instead of full-fat dairy products can make a world of difference. Kids may not notice a change in texture or flavor, and many of kids’ favorite foods, such as chicken nuggets, pizza and macaroni and cheese, can be made with healthier ingredients. * Remember, beverages count, too. Giving children a healthy lunch and then packing a sugar-filled, high-calorie drink negates your efforts. Calories from beverages can quickly add up. Water is always the best option for a healthy drink. Low-fat milk and real fruit juice consumed in moderation also make healthy alternatives to sugary beverages.

Offering healthy school lunches is an important step to raising healthy kids. New guidelines and offerings make it easier for kids to get the nutrition they need for their growing bodies.
