The CVRD toilet rebate program will help residents use water more efficiently. Replacing a 13 litre toilet with a dual flush toilet or high-efficiency (4.8 or less) toilet could reduce indoor water use by approximately 18 per cent. Homes with older 20 litre flush toilets could experience even larger reductions.

Only high efficiency (4.8 litre or less) and dual flush toilets are eligible. A maximum of two toilets rebates per installation address, including those toilets rebates received under the 2009-2014 programs, will be accepted.

Old toilets must be taken to the Comox Valley waste management centre (2400 Pidgeon Lake Road, Cumberland) for the proper disposal and date-stamped receipt.

The toilet rebate program applies to homes that are connected to the Comox Valley water system including the Town of Comox, City of Courtenay and the Arden, Comox Valley, England Road,Marsden/Camco, and Greaves Crescent water local service areas. A limited number of rebates are available for the program.

When Craftsmanship Counts …

Metal roofs are no longer just for barns. Many architects are incorporating them into designs for homes and businesses to achieve environmental and esthetic impact.

There are more than 25 colors from which to choose, and various styles and finishes, including some that look like tiles or wood shakes.

Depending upon the finish, some metal roofs will reflect sun and help conserve hydro.

Other advantages of a metal roof include: -light weight, yet durable -non-combustible -low maintenance

-stand up to severe weather conditions.

Metal roofs can be easily installed over shingle roofs, which can save some labor costs in the long-run.

To calculate the amount of metal you will need, and the length of the sheets, you should take the following measurements to your roof supplier who will calculate what you will need.

The measurements include: width of roof in inches, pitch of roof, and the depth of the overhang (and whether that goes to the facia or over into the gutter space). If you’re also doing metal walls, take those measurements or your plans, too.

Natural Texture Enhances A Landscape

By Ken Land, Rocky Tops Wish your yard had more curb appeal? Challenged by landscape decisions?

A nursery can help with plant choices based on your sun and wind exposure.

They’ll also help you mix blooming and evergreen plants so your gardens look good all year.

Be sure to also think about texture for your property and within gardens.

If you mound soil with sloping sides into lawn areas, you are creating a mini garden or a BERM. (A BERM is actually an acronym for Beauty, Elevation, Retention of Water, and Movement).

Boulders add natural texture, too. Faux rocks are a

great alternative to hauling in heavy rocks. Since fake rocks are light and hollow, they can conceal ugly yard plumbing, such as pipes and septic tank covers.

Water features also add variety. Whether you want to hear a soft trickle from a barrel-type fountain on your patio, or you want a pond, ask a pond expert for advice.

With a little planning and good products, your yard will be the talk of the town soon.
