Our writer: Valley Seniors is a monthly feature compiled by Orlando Delano and featuring residents living in Port Alberni seniors complexes.

Something’s always happening at Echo Village Echo Village is a busy place throughout the year, and residents have the staff and volunteers who put on many events to thank for it.

Monthly highlights at the seniors’ facility include birthday parties, “Family Tea”, “Echo Village Pub Night”. Regular programs give place to special events. ¨Recently, we had the visit of the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, Judith Guichon.

We had a special

afternoon tea with her in our dining room,” says Mitzie Colyn, Echo Village program coordinator since 2001.

Volunteers play an important role in the life of the residents.

They assist the staff in the procurement of meaningful programs, ranging from walks, group exercises, to reading and story time sessions. In addition, dozens of volunteers bring their musical talent and giving spirit to the Village population. Almost daily, their music is heard through the main public areas and hallways of the building.

“We now have a special program regular musical evening session on Tuesdays,” she adds.

When referring to volunteers, it is important to underline the role of the Echo Village Auxiliary. Founded shortly after the arrival of the first residents, their membership, many of them, residents’ relatives at the time, decided to support the seniors of the home, not only financially, by organizing sales, bazaars and other fund raising activities, but also

Today, there are more people using wheelchairs and more in need of personal care than it was seen in past years. This means that the staff must be aware of the need to implement changes and provide activities that are designed to keep residents engaged and entertained by focusing on the health of residents’ body, mind and spirit.

The residents, through their Residents Council, are actively involved by bringing recommendations on issues that affect their well being, the programs, and the addressing of concerns, at their bi-monthly meetings.

Their association has been in existence for as long Echo Village has been in operation.

COMOX –Lewis Bartholomew of Courtenay could be called a memory keeper for a part of Port Alberni’s maritime history.

Bartholomew became capitivated with the story of the HMCS Alberni, a Canadian Corvette that sank after a German U-boat attack in 1944, after he saw a photo of it.

He created a mobile display of the ship and corresponding information about its occupants. In late 2013 he opened a permanent museum display in Comox Centre Mall, with the HMCS Alberni as the focal point.

The increasingly popular HMCS Alberni Museum and Memorial is in slightly better financial health these days.

Yet even after a welcome $2,500 oneyear grant announced recently by the Town of Comox, curator Bartholomew says the museum can always use more monetary donations and volunteers.

“We are supported mostly by public donations here at the museum,” the Courtenay resident noted in an interview.

“Whatever goes into the donation bucket pretty well has been keeping us a little bit afloat.”

Bartholomew, who has spent thousands of dollars from his own pocket since 2000, has filed other funding applications he hopes will result in more funding.

“It’s an interesting thing for us to … go out and ask for funds now. Until recently we’ve been able to maintain the financial aspect of this, but the popularity of the museum has increased.”

Not counting its mobile displays, HAMM has a little under 2,000 square feet of exhibit, office and archive space.

As a registered non-profit society, The Alberni Project Society’s goal is to collect, interpret, display and preserve the history of Canada’s role in the Second World War and to convey the personal stories and events of a global war.

his past Sunday I went to my little film studio to write. As soon as I pulled into the parking lot and saw the van belonging to one of the neighbouring business owners, I knew what I’d be greeted with when I opened the doors: his loud music coming through the walls.

I fired up my computer, put some lunch in the microwave and reluctantly went over to knock on the locked door of his store which was closed for the day. When he opened it I asked if he would please turn the volume down. This wasn’t the first time I’d made this request.

“Let me hear how loud it is,” he scoffed in disbelief. “Because it’s not loud in here.”

I completely disagreed but I didn’t want to argue and led him next door to my studio. I again tried to explain that one of the reasons I rent this office space is so I have a quiet place to escape my rowdy house of kids, dogs 6885874

“I can hear your microwave,” he said walking up to it. ”That’s louder than my music. I’m going to complain that your microwave is too loud.”

Annoyed by the large man’s intimidation method of close-talking and blatant condescension I told him to leave. He walked out shaking his head, remarking on how I was just embarrassing myself.

“You realize you’re being ridiculous, right?” he asked as he opened the door.

A couple of hours later he came by to say he’d changed the position of his speakers away from my wall but turned the volume and bass up and asked if it was any worse. I told him it was at the same intrusive level of noise and I remained unable to concentrate on writing.

“Well, this is your problem not mine,” he said dismissively.

“You’ll have to rent a place in the mountains if you want something quiet.”

When I told him I didn’t wish to fight he said of course I didn’t.

ISABEL BLACKMORE PETCH September 3, 1993 March 14, 2015 Isabel’s adventure started on September 3rd in Grand Falls Newfoundland in 1933 and ended peacefully in Comox, BC on March 14th, 2015 surrounded by her family. An educator all her life, Isabel never stopped teaching and she never stopped learning. Her passions were gardening, literature, cooking, her family, her friends and sharing all those things with others. She said her greatest adventure was being loved and her life was a grand adventure. Her caring, kindness and keen insight will be missed. She is survived by her adoring husband Bill, her children Christianne and Brian, her sister and brother, Angela and Leo, her brother and sister-in law Howard and Linda, her grandchildren Mark, Matthew, Gordon, Raphael and Vittoria and her great-grandchildren Aiden, Isabel Olivia, Blake, Lucas, Liam and Evan.

Special thanks to Dr. Janice Macglaughlin for her gentle and loving care of Isabel over many years of her life and the amazing support to the family over the last few months.

A service will not be held by Isabel’s request.

Dryland Sort Manager

Bahuaud, Leonard Joseph October 3, 1938 to March 16, 2015

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Leonard Joseph Bahuaud of Port Alberni on March 16, 2015 after a courageous battle with ALS. He is survived by his loving wife Alice of 52 years, son Richard (Darla) and grandchildren Nicolas and Kelsey, brother Norman Bahuaud, sister Doreen (George) Tisserand and numerous other family members and friends. Len was predeceased by his parents Henri and Lona, sister-in-law Lise, and brother Edgar. The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff at Ty Watson House especially to Nurse Colleen, Dr. Wendy Johnson and Occupational Therapist Carmen.

Len loved the outdoors and spent a lot of weekends camping with his family and friends. When he wasn’t camping you could always find him in his workshop. He and Alice enjoyed spending winters in Yuma. Len loved his grandchildren and he will be sadly missed by them. His new daughter-inlaw grew close to Len in a very short time. He became an important part of her life. Len’s son cherishes the times they spent together. Len was a great husband, father and grandfather. He will be missed by all.

Vera Stephen (Dot) (nee Rycroft)

December 9, 1923 - March 17, 2015 Vera passed away peacefully at Saanich Peninsula Hospital on March 17, 2015. She was the daughter of Charles Rycroft and Beatrice Rycroft (nee Shaw) of England, and is predeceased by her husband William (Jock) and survived by her son John and daughter-inlaw Seona.

Vera was a kind, caring person, yet possessed a will of steel. Having drawn the attention of Jock by tossing a “rock cake� at him in the mess hall while serving in the WAF in England, she married in 1946, and with only $300 between them, moved to Port Alberni in 1953 pursuing the “Canadian dream�. There, Jock served in the MacMillan Bloedel Alberni Pacific Division until he retired. While in Port Alberni, Vera’s caring side emerged, serving in a number of positions with the Klitsa Rebekah Lodge No. 59. Her steely will is exemplified through surviving double arm fractures, and a fight with cancer. Vera was also very talented, diving into handicrafts, particularly knitting, and in earlier years crocheting. Even at the tender young age of 12 she was awarded prizes for her crocheting and other needlework. Her pursuit of those skills carried through to her latter years during her residence at the Peninsula at Norgarden, where she participated in the local knitting group, the “Crafty Grannies�, raising thousands of dollars for Canada Comforts, and producing dolls for African children. Although she may have at first appeared somewhat reserved, Vera could always be counted on to liven up an event, and often appeared in fantasy dress and ridiculous costumes.

All the while, she lived life true to the creed of the Rebekah Lodge – Friendship, Love and Truth. For her volunteering efforts and desire to help others while at the Peninsula, Vera was nominated for “Senior of the Year�, a celebration of active seniors developed by the BC Senior Living Association.

Seona and I extend our gratitude to the staff at the Peninsula at Norgarden for contributing to Vera’s joy during the past nine years. Vera leaves behind many friends, and of those, we especially thank Lois Robertson, Joyce Ball, Chuck Gibson, Don and Toni Gainor, and her hairdresser, Pat, for the happiness and camaraderie that you brought to Mom’s life. You made her final years very meaningful and happy, and for that we are truly grateful. We also thank the staff at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital, Palliative Care Unit for their care and attention during Vera’s last months, and to Dr. Linda Wilson for her exemplary care and counseling.

Effectively, with such a continual need, there can never be too many volunteers involved in Daffodil Month.

April marks the onset of spring, the season of renewal, announced by the appearance

of daffodils amongst the earliest blooms. As the logo of the Canadian Cancer Society , this hardy perennial stands as a symbol of hope and strength in the fight to eradicate cancer. As a logo the daffodil has become as synonymous with its cause as, for example, the red ribbon is to HIV/AIDS awareness, or the panda is to the World Wildlife Fund. The inspiration for poet William Wordsworth’s most famous work, it is certain-

ly a beloved flower, but beyond its place in the garden and the hearts of poets the daffodil’s powerful significance still needs to enter the consciousness of a great many more Vancouver Islanders. The more volunteers there are out there during Daffodil Month, the greater the chances are of this occurring.

The daffodil’s adoption as an emblem for cancer awareness was something of a happy accident. At a fundraising event in

Toronto in the 1950s, volunteers used daffodils as table decorations, their beauty innocently intended to promote a feeling of hope. It caught on. In 1956 daffodils were handed out by Society volunteers as a means of raising cancer awareness, the turning point coming when people offered to buy them, or simply make a donation to the Society. The origins of Daffodil Month therefore lie in ‘Daffodil Days,’ an event founded by Toronto Canadian Cancer Society volunteers in 1957. Noting the interesting reactions of the previous year, in selling the blooms for Daffodil Days they raised $1,200 (translating to around $10,100 today). The rest is history.

While the month of April is traditionally ushered in with practical jokes and silly pranks, for the Canadian Cancer Society it is arguably the most serious thirty-day block on the organization’s fundraising calendar. April is Daffodil Month, during which a veritable army of volunteers hits the streets countrywide to concertedly appeal for donations and sell daffodil pins. Vancouver Island is no exception.

Yet despite the willingness of so many to offer their time in mobilizing this all-important annual campaign, there is always a pressing need for more volunteers.

Cancer remains the leading cause of death in Canada, responsible for approximately 30 per cent of all deaths annually, with an average five hundred-plus diagnoses expected every single day. Donations collected by volunteers in Daffodil Month, and during other
