Welcome to the 2015 Kootenay Women’s Show

y now, most everyone knows about the Kootenay Women’s Show, on March 28 at the Prestige Rocky Mountain Resort in Cranbrook.

Lily Durham, marketing manager at the Kootenay News Advertiser, said that

the Women’s Show has been running for 11 years now and has been growing since its first run.

“It started as a tribute to International Women’s Day and we wanted a way to honour the women of the community, from those who work at

home to those who own a business outside the home,” said Durham. “We consider it a snapshot of the women who make this a great community.”

A short history of dragon boat racing and breast cancer The Abreast in the Rockies Dragon Boat Team is one of the reasons why there is a Kootenay Women’s Show. Below is the history of why dragon boat teams were formed in the first place.

n the fall of 1995, Dr. Don McKenzie, a sports medicine physician and an exercise physiolo-

gist, was conducting a research project at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC. This study looked at breast cancer survivors who had been advised to restrict activities involving the upper body. The only criteria to join this team was a history of breast cancer. Age, athletic ability, paddling experience - none of this mattered. Paddlers came from all parts of the Vancouver area and from all walks of life. Ages ranged from 31 to 62. It was proven that strenuous exercise was good for cancer survivors. The group transformed from a dragon boat team of breast cancer survivors to an inspiration to all.

A dragon boat is a very long and narrow human-powered boat now used in the team paddling sport of dragon boat racing which originated in China in pre-Christian times.

While competition has taken place annually for more than 20 centuries as part of a folk ritual, it emerged in modern times as an international “sport” in Hong Kong in 1976.

The racing of dragon boats is among mankind’s oldest organized competitions.
