Celebrating local artists The night of April 11 will be one of glitz and glamour, celebrating the many contributions that artists make to the community, as the Abbotsford Arts Council holds the 11th Annual Arty Awards at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium.

spectator,” says Sandhu. “An artist’s creation can touch a person’s soul and leave a lasting impact.”

“These artists play an active role in ensuring that our city continues to remain vibrant,” says Gail Gromaski, executive director of the Abbotsford Arts Council.

“I think it’s important because of the impact that food has on a person’s life every day,” says Massey on cuisine being recognized as an art form. “Even the most simply plated, yet well-executed food is beautiful, and nourishing to the body, mind and spirit.”

“Art serves as an outlet for personal expression, builds social skills and relationships, and bridges cultural and economic divides.” Manjit Singh Sandhu was chosen collectively by the Abbotsford Arts Council’s board of directors to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award for his significant impact on the community throughout his career. For the past eight years, Sandhu has illustrated the diverse heritage of the region; something he feels is important to preserve for future generations. “Art is a continuous journey that has the potential to transport the

Executive chef at Restaurant 62, Jeff Massey, is nominated for Outstanding Artist in the Culinary Arts – this year’s newest category.

Not only is Massey nominated, but Restaurant 62 is also catering the event, so he guarantees that the canapés will be great. This year’s theme is “Old Hollywood Glamour” and will see guests channeling their inner Marilyn Monroe or Clark Gable with tuxedos, bow ties, top hats and elegant gowns. As a tie-in to the theme, the awards will showcase a condensed version of Groove Force Production’s legendary Moulin Rouge performance. Other live entertainment includes a swinging musical performance

by singer Frank David during the opening reception, and a musical performance by the winning musician(s) from CIVL Radio’s Battle of the Bands Competition. “Imagine how our community would look and feel if it were to be void of public art, the sound of music, or the range of emotion felt through viewing an actor bringing a story or character to life on stage,” says Gromaski. “This is why the Abbotsford Arts Council’s mission is to promote, preserve, and celebrate the vision, creativity and energy of the community through initiatives such as the Arty Awards.” The Arty Awards is an alcohol-free event in support of the BC Teen Challenge Women’s Centre Students’ commitment to overcoming addiction. General admission is $20 and children under eight are free. Tickets are available online through Eventbrite.ca and at the Kariton Art Gallery, located at 2387 Ware Street in Abbotsford. HOME LIFE

Serving the Valley for 49 years!

Living in colour GREEN

bold for you, choose a more pastel, peachy hue, which is equally warm and energizing.

Finding the right shade to paint a bedroom or kitchen involves more than just selecting the first colour that catches your eye. Design experts and psychologists alike say it may be worthwhile to choose a colour that helps you feel good rather than just following design trends. The paint colour you choose may add energy to a space or create a tranquil retreat where you can unwind.

Green can evoke composure and tranquility and works in any room. Since green is the primary colour of nature, it also works well for those people who want to bring some of the outdoors inside. To make green feel less subdued and sleepy, work with its complementary opposite, red, by using a few bold red accents here and there to balance the tranquility of green.

Choose a paint colour that helps you feel good rather than just following trends

BLUE To create a spa-like environment and a more serene space, look to shades of blue in soft variations. Cool blues are soothing colours that can help lower stress levels and promote sleep. Too much blue however, can make a room appear cold and stark, so balance out blue with some warmer accents.

RED Red stimulates energy and appetite, which is why the shade is so popular in restaurants and dining rooms. Red is a good choice for social gathering rooms but may not be the wisest choice for a bedroom, as the colour may prove overstimulating.

YELLOW Few colors are more vibrant than yellow, which can help stimulate conversation and make thoughts more focused. A luminous shade of yellow can make any space more welcoming and bright. Just use it sparingly, as too much yellow may not be a good thing. Try mixing in touches of purple to create balance in the space.

ORANGE Orange is considered a shade that expands creativity and imparts a youthful appeal to a space. Consider an orange accent wall or a burst of colour with orange throw pillows. If pumpkin orange is a little too

HELPING HAND

WATER + EDUCATION = EMPOWERMENT PEG PETERS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, RUN FOR WATER

Maymuna, 46, lives in rural Ethiopia, is a mother of three, grade 8 student and elder in her village. Her daughter Ashu, 15, was kidnapped and forced into a marriage in a neighbouring tribe but Maymuna tracked her down and bought her freedom. Something clicked inside her. She told her daughter that women and

girls are not someone’s property. They can be more than just cooks and mothers they can be leaders. She decided to join her daughter in school and learned to read and write for the first time. Her husband threatened to divorce her but she told him that she would rather be alone and educated than married and ignorant. He chose to stay with her. She heard about Imagine1Day.org a

Canadian charity that was building schools and empowering people through education. She contributed all her savings to show her support inspiring her village to join in. Imagine 1 Day built the school and has been training teachers for the past year. Now many other mothers and fathers are sitting alongside their children attending school. They have realized that education is the only way for them to get out of extreme poverty.

Maymuna said that the only thing that holds them back now is access to clean water. They currently get water from a contaminated ditch on the side of the road. Children are sick and dying as a result. Run for Water is partnering with Imagine 1 Day to bring clean water to this community this year. It is so exciting to help empower people like Maymuna with education and clean water.

HEALTH

MATTERS

Trendy exercises to rev-up workouts Exercising consistently is a great way to get healthy. For those who find their workout routines monotonous, switching up exercises and embracing some of the newer, trendier fitness regimens may be a way to maintain your momentum at the gym.

KETTLEBELLS These weighted cast-iron workout tools can be an interesting addition to strength-training workouts. But their utility does not stop there. Using kettlebells during any physical activity will increase the amount of fat burned and can provide a full-body workout. Kettlebells come in different weights, and newcomers are urged to start out gradually and build up in weight as they become more familiar and toned.

These workouts seem to promote faster weight loss than prolonged workouts at moderate paces. While HIIT is functional, it is not best for those who have preexisting orthopedic injuries or serious cardiovascular conditions. But many people enjoy a stronger heart and improved muscle tone from HIIT workouts.

Embrace a new fitness regimen to maintain your momentum at the gym.

HIGH-INTENSITY WORKOUTS High-intensity interval training, or HIIT, combines cardiovascular and strength-training movements into a concentrated workout designed to keep your heart rate elevated. HIIT workouts blend bouts of intense exercise with either rest or low-intensity activity.

TRAMPOLINE CARDIO For those who want to both shake up their workouts and lift their moods, jumping on a trampoline can do just that. It’s difficult to be in a bad mood when bouncing around like a

hearing aid.

kid on a trampoline. In Trampoline classes, each participant has his own individual trampoline. Routines mix in different choreography and small hand weights.

WATER AEROBICS Swimming isn’t the only thing you can do in a pool. Water workouts are ideal for those with muscle and joint pain because the buoyancy of the water reduces stress on these areas, while providing enough resistance for a deep workout. Workouts may begin in chestdeep water and progress to deeper water for added resistance. Some gyms now offer aqua cycling classes that combine water aerobics with spinning.

RECESS CLASSES Adults who want to feel like kids again need only to enroll in a fitness class that borrows activities from the playgrounds of our youth. From walking like a crab to running drills to balance beams, these workouts take school recess and bring it to the health club.
