Chamber on board with border initiative The Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce applauds the federal government’s announcement of a comprehensive agreement between Canada and the United States to allow preclearance activities by land, rail, marine, and air in both countries.

Kootenay Columbia NDP members welcomed a full house of supporters who signed up to participate in the upcoming election campaign.

“The message sent by the people of this area was clear today,” said Stetski. “People reject the Harper Conservative plan for Canada, and they are going to work to make a change in the next election.”

Traditionally, party nomination events are a time when only members of the political party gather, but Stetski was determined that the official start of his campaign would include a wide cross-section of the community.

The event featured a World Café issues forum where participants were able to bring their thoughts and ideas forward on a range of topics from democratic reform to building a sustainable economy.

“I want to be the next Member of Parliament for Kootenay Columbia, and in preparation for that role, I need to hear from everyone,” continued Stetski. “The current MP has clearly stated that he can only vote the way Stephen Harper tells him to, even if his constituents disagree. That’s not good enough for the people in this area.”

Stetski received the endorsement of a number of key regional political figures including the current MP for BC Southern Interior Alex Atamanenko, MLA for Nelson Creston Michelle Mungall, MLA for Columbia River Revelstoke Norm Macdonald, former MLAs Ed Conroy and Anne Edwards, Mayor Gerry Taft of the District of Invermere, Cranbrook City Councillor Norma Blissett and Regional Director Gerry Wilkie.

Norm Macdonald said he was proud to stand in support of Stetski.

“Wayne is a true democrat. Electing Wayne Stetski will bring de-

mocracy back to this area,” said Macdonald.

“Wayne Stetski knows the whole Kootenay area and its people,” said former MLA for Cranbrook Anne Edwards.

“He was Cranbrook’s most inclusive mayor and a visionary.”

But Edwards’ highest praise for Stetski was a phrase that her father used. “He is a decent man.”

Carly Eldred, who was the first of 10 area endorsers to address the crowd, spoke of Stetski’s work with Cranbrook’s youth.

“Mr. Stetski values and celebrates youth in the community,” said Eldred. “He sees youth as future leaders, and treats them as such.”

“Today was a party to celebrate the start of this campaign, but tomorrow we are getting down work, starting with two events in Nelson. Over the next 7 months I’ll be travelling throughout the area, meeting with voters and learning about their issues,” stated Stetski.

As the former Kootenay Regional Manager for the BC Ministry of Environment, Stetski is very familiar with the large riding of Kootenay Columbia. Stetski oversaw staff and offices in Cranbrook, Nelson, Revelstoke and Invermere.

“Yesterday I stood in the rain with a large group of citizens in Cranbrook who were protesting the Conservatives’ Anti Terror legislation C51, a bill that will result in the diminishment of our freedoms. And all across this country, people gathered, showing their determination to fight this degradation of our rights.

“And that determination is what I saw in the people who joined our campaign today. They are ready to work as hard as it takes to ensure that we send a strong NDP voice to Ottawa after the next election.”

Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program has a new program manager

Crystal Klym is the new Program Manager for the Columbia region’s Fish and Wildlife

Compensation Program (FWCP), replacing Trevor Oussoren who is now managing the

FWCP across the province.

The FWCP is a partnership of BC Hydro, the Province of B.C., Fisheries and Oceans Canada, First Nations and Public Stakeholders to compensate for the impacts to fish and wildlife resources caused by BC Hydro dams in the Columbia, Coastal and Peace regions.

“I am very excited about this opportunity,” says Klym. “The FWCP has a strong regional board, and many of the biologists, proponents and contractors helping to deliver its projects have a long history of the Program and extensive local knowledge. I will be supporting them and the Board in the best way I can to make sure the good work continues.”

Klym comes to the FWCP with more than 10 years’ experience in conservation, sustainable natural resource

management, and environmental stewardship. Her primary areas of expertise include ecosystem restoration, habitat assessments, and invasive species management.

She will be responsible for managing the FWCP annual budget in the Columbia Region of approxima tely $5 million and coordinating delivery of technically-sound projects that align with the FWCP’s Basin and Action Plans.

FWCP-supported projects include sturgeon recovery, slashing, thinning and prescribed burns to enhance wildlife habitat, purchasing conservation properties, adding nutrients to Kootenay Lake and Arrow Lakes Reservoir, operating kokanee spawning channels, inventory and monitoring, and building wetlands.

“We support a wide range of on-the-ground and in-stream projects

through a combination of delivery mechanisms, working with many partners,” says Rick Morley, public representative on

the FWCP-Columbia Board. “With Crystal’s track record in building partnerships and her knowledge of ecosys-

tems in this region, she will be a great asset in helping us achieve our objectives.”

Auditor leak has B.C. Liberals bailing

by Tom Fletcher March has been a good month for the B.C. NDP, and it’s been a while since I’ve been able to say that.

Opposition critics fired a shot amidships at the B.C. Liberal government when they began questioning the lack of progress by the new Auditor General for Local Government.

This experimental vessel was launched in Premier Christy Clark’s leadership campaign, and two years after it set sail, it is listing, taking on water and in danger of sinking.

The original idea was to expand the B.C. Auditor General’s office so it could check the financial performance of local governments too.

Business groups were concerned about municipal taxes going up too quickly, with staff growing even as the province grappled with a hiring freeze.

Mayors and councillors began to talk of mutiny over that plan, protesting that their budgets are already required to balance and are subject to annual audits.

But this will be “performance auditing,” Clark insisted, not just making sure the figures add up. It will determine the public is receiving

“value for money” on projects like arenas and services like police, by comparing different communities’ results.

A new AGLG office opened in Surrey.

The “value for money” promise is on the rocks.

The government appointed a quasi-independent board (hello, BC Ferries and TransLink) that hired chartered accountant Basia Ruta, a veteran of the federal Auditor General office who had also served as chief financial officer at Environment Canada and had done local government audits in private practice.

NDP local government critic Selina Robinson started asking why this office has spent $5.2 million and produced only one audit out of a promised 18. Community Minister Coralee Oakes, a former Quesnel councillor in her first cabinet post, allowed that there had been some rough water but there is smooth sailing ahead.

Then came a big leak, in the form of a “work environment review” of the good ship AGLG that was given to the NDP by a seasick crew member.

It described chaos below decks, with “shifting priorities and unclear direction,” as well as “wasted time and work” and “inefficient use of consultant and staff resources.”

Worse, the review noted a human resources monitor had been stationed at the office for most of January to maintain a “respectful workplace for all em-

ployees.”

“A peacekeeper,” as NDP leader John Horgan described the grim scene. “This is like we’re in Cyprus.”

Then it was confirmed that when the AGLG board tried to conduct a performance review, Ruta’s response was to hire a lawyer. Ruta seems to be decisive when protecting her job, if not when hiring, running the office or meeting her own work targets.

Whatever goodwill had been restored with local governments over this experiment is likely gone. Municipal staffers have been dealing with new auditor demands as their councils grind away at their own budgets, and now they see signs that what they have contributed may well have been swept overboard.

Oakes remains on deck, eyes fixed on the horizon. An audit of capital procurement in Rossland is finally scheduled to be done by the end of March, she said. Similar reports on Delta and Sechelt are due in April. The latest revision of that schedule is underway, no doubt in another series of long, acrimonious meetings.

Clark addressed the situation in her last question period before the legislature’s spring break this week. She didn’t have a lot to say about the AGLG’s voyage of the damned, mostly familiar rhetoric about “lower taxes, less red tape” and so on.

Letter: No hugs for deer trap vandals I see in last Friday’s Kootenay Advertiser, (March 13) someone has given “Hugs” to whoever it was that destroyed the deer traps.

For that person, does that mean you have no problems with someone sneaking into your yard or home, in the middle

Those people broke the law, plain and simple.

Accessibility fund seeking proposals The 2015 Enabling Accessibility Fund (EAF) Call for Proposals for communitybased projects was launched today by the Honourable Candice Bergen, Minister of State for Social Development, accompanied

by Andrew Saxton, Parliamentary Secretary for the Minister of Finance and MP for North Vancouver. The launch event took place at the North Vancouver District Public Library.

“Our Government remains committed to supporting Canadians and their families. I encourage organizations to take this opportunity to submit their proposals for projects, in particular those for children, such as playgrounds and recreational facilities. The Enabling Accessibility Fund is an excellent program that builds on our Government’s family benefits by eliminating barriers and helping all Canadians to fully participate in and contribute to their communities,” said The Honourable Candice Bergen, Minister of State for Social Development and MP for Portage-Lisgar. “Today’s announcement reiterates our Government’s focus on helping hard-working Canadian families make ends meet, by making important priorities like child care and after-school sports more affordable.

Our Government has ensured that every family with children will have more money in their pockets, to spend on their priorities as a family.”

Eligible organizations from all provinces and territories are encouraged to apply for funding for projects that will help improve accessibility in community facilities across Canada.

The deadline for submissions is April 27, 2015. Proposals can involve a wide variety of projects, however priority will be given to projects that enhance access for children with disabilities (e.g. outdoor playgrounds), Veterans with disabilities or seniors with disabilities.

It is important to note that municipalities are also eligible to apply in support of the first priority (access for children with disabilities) since a large number of recreational facilities are under their management.

As such, all municipalities, regardless of size, have been included as eligible recipients under this priority only and are strongly encouraged to apply.

Minister Bergen and Mr. Saxton toured the library to see first-hand the improvements made with a 2011 EAF grant of over $70,000. The project, headed by the Friends of the North Vancouver District Public Library Society, created an accessible library area with automatic door openers for the washrooms, an accessible check-out counter and accessible information and communication technologies. People with disabilities are now able to participate in all activities and access the services offered by the library.

Over 11 million in funding is available through this year’s call for proposals. All applications are reviewed against eligibility criteria, call for proposal requirements and program objectives.

Quick Facts Since the creation of the EAF in 2007, our Government has funded over 1,800 projects helping thousands of Canadians gain better access to their communities’ facilities, programs and services.

Examples of eligible projects could include: • building accessible playgrounds for children with disabilities; • widening hallways and doorways, installing elevators and automated power doors; • improving lighting, acoustics or contrast; • installing accessible washrooms and service counters; • upgrading facilities that offer programs for adults and/or children with autism and other cognitive/intellectual impairments; • installing assistive technology, installing or updating information technology.

Kootenay Livestock Association held their AGM on January 17th starting with a power point on Premise ID

by Kevin J. Murphy AGR:EX. The workshop was well attended with many skeptics in the room. “Not another thing for the government to regulate”, could be heard resonating throughout the group.

Premise ID at present is a voluntary program that will benefit in the

areas of disease control (BSE),possibility of natural disasters, fire or flood to aid ranchers and officials to help locate and protect our herds. Premise ID (Livestock Traceability Program), has you register using your Parcel ID 9 digit number form your assessment forms.

Ranchers can easily go online to register with the two page application form or contact Leanne Thibeault at 250-489-5649. Leanne can register the forms

with you and forward them on to the Ministry.

The data base collected will determine how many animals you own, where animals reside as well as the pasture or range land they may be on in an event of an emergency.

KLA organized a full day tour of our area and local operations with our MLA Bill Bennett and the Honourable Norm Letrik (Minister of Agriculture) this past summer. There were around a dozen that participated and are currently working with

the Minister on various promises and commitments that were made.

Much emphasis was made at this event for adequate, timely and reliable income sources for invasive plant control.

Our chair committees made their presentations on finance, weeds, wildlife, Ag in the Classroom and Land use update. Pam Turyk, Weed Committee Chair, presented the EKIPC “Golden Shovel” award to Faye Street in April of 2014 for her continued work efforts and support for weed control in the East Kootenay region.

CALL FOR 2015 PROJECT PROPOSALS

The Grassland and Rangeland Enhancement Program (GREP) provides funds to persons and organizations wishing to carry out activities on Crown Land that will enhance Rangeland and Grassland values.

The Program is funded by the Columbia Basin Trust and administered locally by the Kootenay Livestock Association.

The GREP is currently accepting applications for projects for consideration for the remainder of the 2015 funding year.

The over-riding purpose of the Grassland and Rangeland Enhancement Program is to maintain and/or enhance grassland resources while meeting conservation, environmental and recreational objectives.

Some examples of projects funded to date under the GREP include rangeland fences, protection of wetlands, innovative gates and cattleguards, restoration of damaged areas, interpretive and educational signs and invasive plant management.

Applications are open to associations or societies, individuals, range tenure holders or partnerships across the Columba Basin Region.

Meeting aside, elections done and our ranchers moved to the ballroom for a wonderful evening of auctions, entertainment by Randy Tapp from Fisher Peak Performing Arts and a superb beef dinner put on by the Heritage Inn. It was a full house with many of our younger ranchers bringing their kids. This is such a great opportunity for networking within the ranching communities and seeing the enthusiasm on the kids faces was priceless. Two awards were given out and congratulations were abundant for Jerry Thibeault whom has retired from years of doing the Branding Inspections, he was not able to attend so his daughters accepted the award for him. Thank you so much Jerry. Also an award for given to Randy Harris on his retirement, for his continued work on the Rocky Mountain Trench for the past 25 years. Thank you Randy.

2015 will be another challenging year for our industry, hopefully we will see those good prices in the fall but KLA will continue to work with government, CBT, RDEK, BCCA, City and various groups to help to facilitate the needs of our ranchers, hobby farmers and their families to continue to produce the much needed foods that we have on our tables. We must never take for granted the work and time that is put into producing the staples we require.

College of the Rockies has unveiled its new strategic plan

College of the Rockies Board Chair David Handy is pleased to announce the College has completed work on a new five-year strategic

plan.

“College President and CEO David Walls and the Strategic Planning Committee have undertaken one of the most

extensive strategic plan consultation processes in our history which has resulted in a new vision for the College,” Handy says. “I am pleased with

the work that has been done by President Walls and the Committee and am excited about where the College will be moving over the next five

years.”

In February, 2014 the Strategic Planning Committee, consisting of 14 members including student, faculty, support staff, middle and senior management and Board of Governors representatives, embarked on the development of the new strategic plan.

A key principle of the process was engaging as many internal and external stakeholders as possible. Students, support staff, faculty, management, College Board members and over 90 citizens of Fernie, Cranbrook/Kimberley, Invermere, Golden and Creston participated in the process and provided vital information, feedback and suggestions.

The resulting plan, en-

titled Our Road Map to New Heights, includes a new mission statement– To transform lives and enrich communities through the power of education and a new vision – To create and deliver the most personal student experience in Canada.

“Our new mission and vision statements are symbols of our renewed commitment to our students and to our communities,” explains College President and CEO David Walls.

“Over the next five years, we will be focusing on four themes: exceptional student experience, educational excellence and innovation, improving employee empowerment and effectiveness, and expanding partner-

New College of the Rockies VP, Education & Applied Research, Stan Sae-Hoon Chung, is excited to begin his duties December 1.

College of the Rockies is pleased to announce the appointment of Stan Sae-Hoon Chung as the new Vice President, Education and Applied Research.

Chung, who will join the College December 1, brings with him 25 years of experience in Canadian post-secondary education. He has held positions that include Vice President Academic and Research at Red River

College, Dean of Arts and Science at Camosun College, Associate Dean of Arts and Foundational Programs at Okanagan College, Associate Professor and Chair of Communications at Okanagan University College and instructor in English, Business and New Media at College of New Caledonia.

“I couldn’t be more proud and excited. College of the Rockies is a

small college with big impact. I am delighted to join the team led by President Walls and thrilled at the prospect of contributing to COTR’s impact.”

Chung holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of British Columbia, a Masters of Arts from the University of Toronto and is a PhD candidate at the University of British Columbia in Interdisciplinary Studies. He is an active writer and journalist with many publications, including Global Citizen: River of Love and Other Essays.

Protecting our children from sexual abuse

In Canada, 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually abused by their 18th birthday.

This means that when you look at a school classroom, a hockey team, a ballet class, or the children gathered at your child’s birthday party, you are seeing children who have been - or are being - sexually abused. These numbers are epidemic in their proportion, and yet, studies tell us that these numbers are conservative as 95% of children never disclose. We like to believe that the people sexually abusing our children are the creepy strangers in the park wearing trench coats. The reality is that 95% of abusers in Canada are people who are emotionally close to our children and are often in a position of trust or authority. Abusers are family members such as grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, or siblings, or other people the child knows such as a teacher, coach, or friend’s parent. Child sexual abuse is one of the few issues that knows no boundaries.

It crosses all cultures, religions, income levels, social status, gender and age.

This raises the question: “how do we protect our children?”

First, we teach children from a young age about their bodies; this includes teaching them the proper names for their body parts. This takes away the stigma of talking about their private parts and sets our children up to have open, honest conversations.

Second, we talk to our children about boundaries. We discuss what is appropriate and inappropriate in various situations with a variety of different people. For example, we explain to our children why it’s not okay for an uncle to look at a 7 year old’s bum, but it is okay for a doctor to do so with a parent present. We also show children that the boundaries they have set for themselves are respected, such as asking for privacy when changing.

Third, we explain to our children that saying “no” is allowed.

This means empowering a child to make the

choice as to who they hug or don’t hug. Allowing a child to say “no” to an unwanted hug or touch teaches them they are in charge of their bodies and what happens to them. This also involves teaching the adults around your child to ask permission before hugging or kissing them, and respecting the child when they say “no”.

Fourth, we help children learn about all of their emotions and how to recognize them in themselves and in others. This means that when a child feels uncomfortable they will be able to recognize it and do something about it.

Fifth, we train our children to distinguish between secrets and surprises. We encourage children to tell a parent any time someone tells them to keep a secret.

Lastly, we minimize one-on-one adult / child interactions. Research tells us that 80% of child sexual abuse happens in one-on-one adult / child situations.

As true as this fact is, it is also recognized that a one adult / one child situation can be extremely important and valuable for a child.

So when in these situations, there are a number of safeguards that can be implemented to make the time as riskfree as possible: insist that the activity can be observed (in a room with windows, glass in the door, or a public place), inform the adult that someone will be dropping in during the scheduled one-on-one time, drop in unexpectedly if possible, and require that the adult tells you what activities are planned (ask both the adult and child individually afterwards to confirm what took place).

When we put all of these pieces together, we end up with a child who knows what is appropriate and inappropriate, who can recognize when they are feeling uncomfortable, who knows they have the right to say “no” (along with first-hand experience of their “no” being listened to), and who feels completely comfortable talking to adults about their bodies and if their boundaries have been disrespected.

What abuser is going to tar-

get this child? Rather, they are going to prey on the child who believes it is “yucky” to talk about their private parts, who isn’t sure what is okay and what is not, who has been told to hug no matter what, and who doesn’t know what they are feeling when their nonexistent boundaries are crossed.

An idea can get a hold on you and you could be building a new garden bed, designing a fence, or putting up a greenhouse. One trip to the local Garden Centre and you could be coming home with new style hanging baskets and now you need a place to put them.

3. Old age. No one dies young by gardening.

Gardeners are a hardy group that have resilience and are living life to the fullest. I have no way to prove it, but if you want a longer life, start gardening.

4. Eat better. Strawberries, tomatoes, asparagus, take your pick of vegetables or fruit and compare them to store bought. Fresh from the garden always tastes better. The flavours are full and the texture isn’t tough. Also, when you have lots of vegetables available, you simply eat more of them. The ways this can improve our lives is an entire book to itself.

5.Ingredients. In today’s age of mass production and industrial techniques to produce food, there are a lot of questions people have about what happens to our food before we eat it.

When you are producing it yourself, you know exactly what’s in it. Whether it's organic or not, it is completely under your control and your values.

6. Fun or Work. It may seem like a lot of work and some chores take a great deal of physical labour. The rewards of that work are paid back in ten fold. Reaping the benefits of building a patio, having an edible garden, or enjoying luscious planters always is worth it.

7. Family event. There are typically a lot of jobs to be done and more hands make the load lighter. From an early age, kids can actually contribute constructively and have some great out-of-the-box ideas. Grandparents have multi generations worth of knowledge that needs to be passed down. Families that garden together are stronger for it.

8. Improves the community. Not only does it greatly improve the appeal and demand for your house value, but the community looks better as a whole. Have you driven through towns where yards have garbage piled in the front yard versus yards with pondless waterfalls running?

Which one would you rather live in?

9. Automatic Irrigation. If someone is complaining about how they can’t get away, they haven’t discovered automatic irrigation. When irrigation is designed right, one person can have acres of plants, and it is not only for the lawn.

Drip lines for pots and trees can open up the possibilities to have more with less work. I have seen yards stuffed full of plants that would take all day to water by hand, but by using irrigation they only have to monitor it.

10. Fun. Toiling in dirt doesn’t look fun from the outside, but the first time you smell fresh dirt in spring is like smelling bacon in the morning. It is a fun that is satisfies you, your family, and the community. It is a real pleasure that may get you wearing tan long sleeved clothing and really big hat.

Every year at the BC Legislature during the Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial Event, we celebrate the lives of the heroic firefighters who paid the ultimate sacrifice. These people chose one of the most dangerous careers in public service and deserve our thanks and deep appreciation.

We all know how important these brave firefighters are to our communities, which is why over my time in government, we have recognized heart disease and certain cancers within the Workers Compensation Act as occupational diseases associated with long-term employment as a firefighter.

Following the memorial service in Victoria, the firefighters from all around BC meet the MLA’s at the annual firefighter reception and we also hold a business meeting between firefighters and their MLA the next day. It’s the highlight of the Spring Legislative Session for me to visit with the firefighters from Cranbrook and Fernie.

Prepare to be amazed at a Nepal travelogue coming to the College of the Rockies on March 25.

On Wednesday, March 25 and Monday, March 30 at 7 pm at the College of the Rockies Lecture Theatre, Patricia and David Stock and Sabine and Gebhard Pfeiffer will make a DVD travelogue presentation.

This travelogue is called “Far Above the Clouds - Nepal 2014” and will highlight their treks to the Langtang Himal area, Annapurna Base Camp, Lumbini, and Bardia National Park.

Both of the treks went very well and the Stocks and Pfeiffers were very lucky to have avoided the natural disaster that hit many parts of Nepal.

They were trekking in the next valley from the disaster and only suffered hiking in 6 hours of torrential rain and not the snow storm that devastated parts of the Annapurna Circuit and other areas of Nepal. They did not hear about the tragedy until they had almost finished their first trek due to lack of electricity for cell phone service.

That one day was the only bad weather for their 6 weeks in Nepal.

Since 2009 David and Patricia have presented 4 different dvd presentations at the College of the Rockies in support of The Canadian Friends of Nepal. This small support group raises money twice yearly to help 12 families and a small school in Nepal. Sabine and Gebhard Pfeiffer have

also presented many travelogues in the past to help the Friends of the Library and the GoGo-Grannies, to name a few.

Sabine has put together this presentation and it highlights the two quite different but visually stunning trekking areas. As well, you will visit Lumbini ( birthplace of the Buddha ) and the jungles of Bardia National Park in south Nepal.

Admission is by donation and all funds raised go to The Canadian Friends of Nepal June Fundraiser.

This event is sponsored by the College of the Rockies International Department.

Gordon Terrace School will be selling travel bags, luggage tags, protein powders, and wooden IPad holders at the event. They have been helping The Canadian Friends of Nepal since 2011 and have raised $22,000 to date. With this money they have built a 3 room addition for 3 to 5 year old students. It is the only “Hot Pink” building in the village and the the money raised tonight will help their ongoing efforts on behalf of the little school.

It will be an interesting and informative travelogue so come out and support both The Canadian Friends of Nepal and “Gordon Terrace School - Nepal”.

The Bavarian Iron Legs quadrathon a success despite weather

The weather, although cloudy and wet, did not dampen the spirits of 67 participants in the 2015 Bavarian Iron Legs Quadrathon. The race held Saturday, March 14 at Kimberley Alpine Resort saw competitors either individually or as

a team - downhill ski, cross country ski, run and bike.

Competitors rode the quad chair to the top where they began the down hill portion of the event. Racers ran around the Kootenay Haus clipped into their skis and raced through the course down the Dreadnaught run. Once

“Hunters giving back to wildlife” - Over $130,000 contributed to wildlife

at the bottom members ran from near the old Rosa chair to the Nordic Ski trails. Adult racers cross country skied 5 km; kids teams did 3.5 km. At that point racers changed boots into runners and traveled 4 km down Gerry Sorenson Way to the Cenotaph.

Off came the runners and the cyclists began the climb back up, 4.5 km to the Kimberley Alpine Resort. Children teams changed up at the Trickle Creek Golf Course entrance.

Afterwards, the 11 teams and 18 individual participants enjoyed a complimentary hamburger in the Stemwinder where prizes were awarded. The 18 individuals were made of 2 ladies, 7 men and 9 juniors. Of the 11 teams, 3 were kids teams. It was great to see this as a family activity for many.

There were some determined youngsters out there putting in a huge effort. Kudos to everyone that participated!

The dancers, who range in age from nine to 18 years or age, will be performing from July 8 to July 12, with their showcase piece taking place on the Disney stage on the closing Sunday.

Rybar added, “They are also participating in two workshops throughout the week with the Disney Performing Arts Teachers and Choreographers, which is a dream come true for a dancer.”

The dancers began rehearsing last week and will be hosting various

fundraisers between now and July to help fund the cost of the dance workshops.

The young ladies will also be performing their showcase routines at different community events over the next few months.

“This is a fantastic group of kids, not just great dancers but hard working kids with awesome attitudes,” said Rybar. “The team spans quite an age group and the senior dancers are so great and helpful with younger team members. They are a dance coach’s dream.”

They were so helpful getting my husband admitted for an eye treatment. The Handicap parking was full so I had to get a wheelchair, then they came & took over while I went & bought a parking pass. When I got back, he was already admitted & in the waiting room. These ladies give their time so generously & I want them to know how much they are appreciated especially when someone is unfamiliar with the hospital. Thanks again!

Della Christine Gaskell (nee Sims) 1935 – 2015 It is with deep sorrow that the family of Della Gaskell announces her passing on Friday, March 13, 2015 in Cranbrook at 79 years of age.

Della was born on July 6, 1935 in Invermere, BC to Bessie (nee Nelson) and Percy Sims. They lived in various towns in the Kootenays before they settled in Cranbrook. Della was always very independent and went to work when she was 14 or 15 years old as a camp cook. Soon after Della was married and had five children who became her life’s greatest passion. While Della enjoyed her time with her children greatly, she also would have her younger sister and nephews stay with her for weeks at a time. Later in life when she married Roy, she embraced his three children and loved them as her own. As her grandchildren and great grandchildren were born she embraced them and encircled them with her deep love.

Along the way Della become a great bowler and won many trophies. Her needlework became a great passion as well, but fishing was her favorite pastime. She and Roy spent many happy hours in their boat at Premier, White Swan and Koocanusa Lakes. Della would often catch the biggest fish and loved to tease Roy about it. She loved to play cards too, and delighted in beating Roy at crib, which they played almost every day until her passing. Della loved to dance especially to country and western tunes. She loved flowers and hummingbirds and Thomas Kincade’s artwork. She loved her home and kept it beautiful, always surrounding herself with pictures and treasures. Della was a wonderful cook and baker. There were always cookies in the cookie jar! So it would follow that Della’s career was in the restaurant business. She worked and managed Kentucky Fried Chicken, Orange Julius and Woolworth’s restaurant, always taking pride in the food she prepared as well as the cleanliness of the kitchen.

Left to mourn her passing are her loving husband of 45 years Roy Gaskell; her five children Susan (Terry) Conroy of Cranbrook, Ron (Carmen) Lancaster of Maple Ridge, Debbie (Bob) Graham of Creston, Sandra (Troy) Ross of Cranbrook and Randy (Lydia) Lancaster of Cranbrook; her three step-children Terry (Jan) Gaskell of Okotoks, Bill (Kathy) Gaskell of Airdrie and Darlene (Ron) Henkewich of Winnipeg. She is also survived by her brother Percy (Marion) Sims of Kimberley and sister Cindy (Rob) Stevely of Fort Steele; 22 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and special friends.

Della was predeceased by her mother Bessie Hughes (1993) and father Percy Sims (1940’s); sister Viola Bradshaw (2007) and brother-in-law Art (1998); brother George Sims and sister-in-law Betty (1977); brother Jim Sims (1989) and sister-in-law Inez (1974); brother Mervin Sims (1991) and sister-in-law Lisa (1992), and brother Pat Hughes (1966).

Della was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. Words cannot express how much she will be missed.

A memorial service for Della will be held at McPherson Funeral Home in Cranbrook on Saturday, March 21, 2015 at 11:00 am. LUDWIK “LUDI” OLEKSOW January 13, 1953 – March 9, 2015 Following a long, courageous battle with brain cancer, Ludi is finally at rest. Despite his illness, Ludi never lost his special sense of humor and his gentle, loving nature.

Ludi was born in New Denver, BC to parents Mike and Johanna Oleksow. In 2001 he married Christine Huppie and settled into family life. After receiving his MS diagnosis, Ludi went on to get his millwright ticket, working at Fording River until his retirement in 2012. Following his retirement, Ludi and Chris moved from Elkford to Cranbrook where he remained until his death.

Ludi is lovingly survived by his wife Chris; daughters Deidre Oleksow and Destine Oleksow (Chris); stepsons Aaron Walsh (Holly) and Jason (Mona) Walsh; grandchildren Bailey and Fox Leeson, Austin Hangreaves (Joslynn), Colton Burch, and Wyatt, Teagan and Evan Walsh; his great grandson Blake Hargreaves; mother Johanna Oleksow; brother Mike (Marg) Oleksow, and his sister Helena (Bruce) Edmison. He was preceded in death by his father Mike and his sister Wendy.

Warren Alonzo Cockell 1925 – 2015 It is with deep sorrow that the family of Warren Cockell announces his passing on Tuesday, March 10, 2015 in Wasa at 89 years young.

Warren was born on October 31, 1925 in Penticton, BC. At 19 years of age he joined the Navy and worked as a Seaman from 1944 to 1946. He was the youngest man on the Huron Ship. After the war he went to work at CP Rail until 1950. On October 28, 1947 Warren was married to Violet Radomske. In the 1950’s they moved to Bull River to farm.

Warren worked at the Galloway Mill and the Bull River Trout Hatchery while also attending to the farm. In 1998 he retired and they moved to Wasa where Warren loved to hunt, fish, bowl, read and putter in his spare time.

Warren is survived by his loving wife of 67 years Vi; son Brian (Peggy), daughter Marlene (Heinz) Leuenberger, five grandchildren Kurt, Ian, Ben, Jennifer and Ashley and eight great grandchildren Taitum, Seth, Kamryn, Taylor, Brayden, Corbin, Logan and Gavin. He was predeceased by his parents Emily and John, brothers Harry, Jack and Willard and his sister Bona.

At Warren’s request there will be no funeral service.

Cremation has taken place.

We would like to thank everyone for the flowers, hugs, cards, phone calls and food. The love and generosity shown by the community and our friends has been overwhelming.

Robert Allan Brook June 17, 1978-March 16, 2015 It is with heavy hearts we say goodbye to our beloved Brooksie.

After battling a rare liver disease and bile duct cancer, Rob passed away at 36 years old.

Although he will be greatly missed by his wife (April) and their two children (Braxton and Ana), there is comfort knowing that Rob has forever changed so many people's lives.

In his final days, he was surrounded by family and friends who came together to celebrate his life! A night to remember memorial service will be held on Friday, March 20, 2015 at 7:00 pm at Evergreen Funeral Chapel, Edmonton, AB.

OBITUARY Irene “Gracie” Moore (nee Rathwell) May 7, 1931 – March 9, 2015 It is with great sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of our mother and grandmother Irene “Gracie” Moore on Monday March 9, 2015. She was a very strong loving woman that loved her family and friends. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and friend and will be missed by many. She loved her old country music, her flowers, her coffee dates, walks to the mall, and telling stories of her life growing up.

Irene was born on May 7, 1931 in Rimbey, Alberta to Clifford and Pearl Rathwell where she was raised until she was 13, when she moved to live with her Aunt Stell and Uncle Joe in Saskatoon. A few years later she moved back to Rimbey where she met and later married Robert Moore on September 19, 1953. They lived in various places throughout Alberta and British Columbia to finally settling down in Cranbrook BC in 1975 where they raised their 3 children.

Irene is survived by her children Murray (Leslie) Moore, Jackie (Doug) Hill, Cheryl (Gord) McDonald; Honorary daughter Mary (Jamie) Hazzard; grandchildren Leslie (John) Smitna, Dana (Chad) Smart, Josh (Haley) McDonald, Jessie Moore, Michael (Lindy) Birmingham, and Johnathan (Candice) Birmingham; great grandchildren Isaac Bailey, Madison Smitna, Jordan Smart; Kaleb, Laynie, Bryce, Spencer, Oliver Birmingham and brothers Ken (Eileen) Rathwell, Murray (Gail) Rathwell as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

Irene was predeceased by her husband Robert Moore; children Terry Moore, Colleen Moore, her parents Clifford and Pearl Rathwell, and her siblings Pricilla, Vernon, Harold, Patrick, Michael, Clifford Jr, and Jeanne Smith.

A celebration of Irene’s life will be held on Saturday March 21, 2015 at the New life Foursquare Church (308 10th Ave S) in Cranbrook at 2:00 pm; followed with a luncheon after the ceremony at the New Life Foursquare Church.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a memorial donation in honor of Irene may do so to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the Arthritis Society.

Driveway’s Alexandra Straub will pilot an all-electric Nissan LEAF in the annual AJAC Eco-Run next week.

The all-electric sedan, which is also the prize car provided by the Scrap-It program for our Plug-In to Win contest, will glide silently from the Vancouver International Auto Show in downtown Vancouver next Wednesday.

The route, devised by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada, will then take the participating 19 eco-friendly vehicles to Victoria via the Nanaimo ferry. On Thursday, the vehicles will be put through their paces on a handling course in Langford to see how versatile they are.

The EcoRun concludes that evening in Vancouver.

In addition to pure electric vehicles, the Eco-Run

includes plug-in and conventional hybrids, as well as vehicles powered by hydrogen fuel cells, diesel-fuelled powertrains and highly efficient gasoline options.

There’s no limit to the size of vehicle showcased, as they range from subcompacts to pickup trucks.

The participants include the 2015 Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell, 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel, 2015 Kia Soul EV, 2015 Ford Focus 1.0-litre, 2015 Acura RLX Sport Hybrid and the 2015 Chevy Volt.

The purpose of the event is to inform consumers of these alternative options. These new vehicles are driven in real-world road conditions in order to fully test for fuel efficiency and the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.

Truck lovers could fill an afternoon running a careful eye over the new trucks at the Vancouver auto show.

Here are my five picks for special attention: 2015 Chevrolet Colorado: The all-new design is turning heads all across Canada. This mid-size truck fills a void here.

Still expected to work as hard as a full-size truck, the Colorado can tow more than 3,039 kilograms (6700 lbs) a 2.5L I-4 engine is standard with an optional 3.6L V6 with a six speed automatic transmission. This truck includes all the modern day technologies including 4g LTE hotspot with WI-FI connection through OnStar, which provides service for seven devices.

2015 Ford F150: The combination of a body made of aluminum body and high strength steel in its frame make this truck up to 317 KG (700 lbs) lighter. This truck was inspired

by Ford’s concept vehicle, the Atlas. It has 11 new classexclusive features, including 360-degree camera view, integrated loading ramps stowed in the pickup bed, 400-watt power outlets inside the cab, LED headlights and side view mirror spotlights, and remote tailgate release. There are four engine choices, the 3.5L Ti-VCT V6, 2.7L EcoBoost, 5.0 Ti-VCT V8, and the 3.5L EcoBoost.

The 3.7L V6 delivers 282 horsepower and 253 lb-ft of torque. The 2.7L V6 has 325 horsepower and 375 lb-ft of

torque. The 5.0 V8 has 385 horsepower with 387 lb-ft of torque and the 3.5L V6 is pushing 282 horsepower and 253 lb-ft of torque. These are all capable engines depending on your requirements.

2015 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel: It is the only light duty diesel available here. It has a 3.0 L V6 Diesel engine with a torqueflite eight speed transmission. Not only will it give you 420-pound feet of torque and plenty of towing capabilities, it will also reduce CO2 emissions and runs on B20 Biodiesel. Many trims are available from work-truckready to full luxury. This truck has something for every buyer.

2015 GMC 3500HD Denali: It is a beast. This truck is built to pull with 10,251 KG (22,600 lbs) of trailer towing capacity. The 6.6L V8 turbo engine delivers 397 hp and 765 lb ft of torque and is paired with a 1000 series Allison transmission. With interior upgrades such as triple door seals, hydraulic powertrain and body mounts, 12 way power adjustable bucket seats, heated leather wrapped steering wheel and a Bose sound system you can operate this beast and still feel comfortable doing so.

2015 Nissan Titan: This Titan can tow up to 4309 kg (9,500lbs) thanks to 385 lb-ft of torque from its 5.6 L DOHC 32 valve V8 engine producing 317 hp at 5,200 rpm.

If off-road driving is part of your plans then the Titan is ready. With the Prox-4x package you get heavy duty skid plates protect the oil pan, fuel tank, transfer case and lower radiator. The 4WD system utilizes a shift on the fly two-speed transfer case, which allows you to 4WD at a moment’s notice. Low range can be selected when the terrain requires it. The electronic locking rear differential is ready at a flip of a switch giving much need traction on slippery surfaces. Rancho performance shocks are available with the off-road package. Several new crossovers will be featured at this year’s Vancouver auto show.

Honda recently revealed for the first time at the Chicago and Toronto auto shows, the all-new Pilot. Gone is the boxy three-row vehicle, replaced by a sleeker, more stylish design. Now equipped with LED headlights and LED daytime running lights, along with available 20-inch wheels and panoramic sunroof, this is a modern take on family hauling. The Pilot is powered by a 3.5L V6 engine, matched to a six-speed automatic transmission or an optional nine-speed unit. This new model will be sold with front or all wheel drive and because it is 135kg lighter than the last model it should be more efficient.

Mercedes is renaming the M-Class as the GLE. GL refers to an SUV/Crossover and the E is the “E-Class of SUVs”. To confuse things a bit more, the first debut is the GLE Coupe, a sportier coupe-like SUV designed to compete with the BMW X6. This Mercedes, with its sleeker silhouette and powerful 262-hp biturbo V6, looks great. It will range from comfort to all-out performance.

The Acura RDX has been a big hit for this premium brand.

Based on the ever-popular Honda CR-V, this Acura is filled with lots of luxury touches for a modest price. The 2016 RDX showcases the latest look of the Acura family. The dual LED headlamps and improved interior design, including two screens in the centre of the dash, puts the RDX in line with the new TLX and recent MDX. Good news is that the trusty V6 engine will stay for 2016.

Hyundai has announced that they it will start leasing Hydrogen Fuel Cell Tucson SUVs to Canadians this year, with the Vancouver area being the first market to receive these worldclass vehicles. This is an electric SUV but instead of getting electricity from the grid it is produced using an onboard hydrogen fuel cell. The owner fills the fuel tank with hydrogen, not gasoline, and drives normally. The fuel cell Tucson can go 420 kilometres on one tank of fuel, a range about which electric car manufacturers can only dream.

Ford has one of the best selling SUVs of all time in the Explorer, with more than 350,000 sold in Canada so far. The all-new 2016 version made available a 2.3L EcoBoost engine on the base and XLT trim. The 290hp 3.5L V6 engine is carried over but the Sport trim and new Platinum trim will be fitted with the 365hp Ecoboost V6. The new Platinum model will be fitted with real aluminum and ash wood accents, plus leather will trim the steering wheel,

2016 Cadillac CTS-V The new CTS-V is the pinnacle of Cadillac’s renaissance, repositioning itself as a highperformance luxury brand able to compete with the likes of BMW and Audi for the wellheeled 40-something power broker.
