Unsuspecting retired senior citizen victim of fraud, loses savings This week, Rimbey RCMP detachment responded to a number of calls for service including theft, fraud, and breach of Probation Orders, domestic violence and other serious matters.

Often, we deal with difficult situations that even make us shed a tear once the dust has all settled. Every now and then, we encounter cases that are just plain upsetting.

In one such case, a despicable human being from parts unknown defrauded an elderly person out of their hard earned money.

A retired senior citizen received a phone call recently from her so-called grandson who was allegedly in jail and needed money to help pay for a collision he was in.

He did not want his parents to know and he only needed $2,000. Concerned for her loving grandson, who had always been on the straight and narrow, she complied with his request and sent him the $2,000. Shortly after, his lawyer called and stated he still needed some more money for some unforeseen additional charges and then

They were very convincing, however, this widow just didn’t have any more money to give so she called her daughter and found out that her son was away at work and was never in any trouble.

She had been scammed.

These fraudsters had tricked the poor woman out of her savings and were long gone with the loot. Unfortunately, they were never in Canada in the first place leaving police little opportunity for an arrest.

In today’s world, a person’s identity and personal information is readily available on the World Wide Web. Unfortunately, it is just that - the “world wide web”. The last fraud we investigated such as this led us to Africa where the trail of evidence left behind by the criminals ran dry in a country where no one even has a birth cer-

tificate or any other form of identification.

It was a country run by organized crime groups and the environment is very hostile. In that case, the victim’s money, no doubt, was used to fund their violent acts against humanity. These characters have no ethics, morals or honesty. They do not care who the victim is.

Please protect yourself and never send money by a wire transfer unless you are 100 per cent sure who it is you are sending it to. A wire transfer is not traceable and is one of the most common methods used by criminals.

Recently, many folks in town have had their vehicles rummaged through by opportunistic thieves in the middle of the night. Please ensure you never leave your car unlocked. Do not leave valuables in your unattended vehicle at anytime. Recently, we arrested a car thief who blatantly stated in the interrogation that he did not feel that we could even charge him for theft because the owner of the truck had left his keys in the console. The thief in this case found out we can and will charge him with theft, however, you don’t want to own a car after this character had been behind the wheel! Take precautions … protect yourself. Lock it up!

Spring, hiding for several months under a crust of dirty snow, is starting to play peeka-boo with all us weary winter dwellers.

It’s nice!

As winter slowly makes its most welcome descent, I have found much to my surprise, among the icicles and the crusty snowbanks, there are some really cool (pardon the pun) moments to remember.

It is true. There is always so much stuff to worry about.

In fact I am sure there are at least one hundred and one reasons to be sad on any given day. Actually, I am surprised no one has written a book on that.

But, creeping into the very fabric of sadness, like the ridiculous sight of a flower springing up in a crack in the cement, there are these unexplained moments of joy.

Weird, how that happens, but one can only be grateful that they do appear.

A friend and I went out for supper and a movie the other night. That, in itself, was quite magnificent for little old me, who happens to be home alone for the next little while and was thinking of a peanut butter and honey

Treena Mielke On The Other Side sandwich as my simple supper fare.

But, no, she whisked me away to a rather exotic chicken and cashew meal which I ate right to the very last cashew, enjoying myself, the cashews, the chicken and the company, immensely.

Anyway, the movie called ‘Wild’ was a tall tale (well, probably not all that tall, and maybe not a tale at all, because it could have happened) about a young girl who went into the ‘wild’ to find herself after her mother died and her marriage disintegrated.

Before the mother died, a scene showed her singing in her little kitchen. Her daughter, home from school, sank dejected onto one of the

tattered old kitchen chairs.

She looked at her mother in disgust. “Why are you singing,” she said. “Don’t you get it? Life is hard. We have nothing. You married a loser who left you.”

“Yes”, I thought. “Be miserable, darn it. Life is too hard. Do not, I repeat, do not sing.”

I munched my popcorn!

Sadly, the mom died, hence the trip into the ‘Wild’ for the girl to find herself.

The movie has so much food for thought that I haven’t been able to digest it all, but this much I know for sure.

Walking is good and singing is even better.

Lately, I’ve done lots of walking, mostly because of the Fit bit thing I have on my wrist, and not so much because of a desire to find myself.

I pretty much know where I am and I’m probably late.

But I must admit the ice walk I took with a couple of friends to Johnston’s Canyon did give a whole new meaning to the word ‘walk’.

For me, a faithful, treadmill type walker, slipping and sliding on the edge of a mountain, protected only by a guardrail, was a totally new, exhilarating experience.

And I must admit, it is right up there on my ‘favorite’

list along with red wine and music.

It was like walking in an ethereal world of beauty where the water and the rocky walls around me were quiet and still, just hanging there, as if they were suspended

by Mother Nature in a magnificent, frozen white trance.

A delicious supper in my sister’s cozy kitchen (the pretty plates more than made up for the slightly burned carrots) and having breakfast with a little girl whose smile and summer sky blue eyes turns my heart to ‘grandma mush’ tells me one thing is for sure.

Challenging times for provinces facing 2015 budgets TROY MEDIA

Provincial governments across Canada are doing a lot of soul searching as they craft their 2015 budgets.

There is no denying that these are challenging times for our provinces. They face a clear and present economic danger in the form of declining revenues, stubbornly high unemployment and an elusive economic recovery.

The knee jerk reaction to this situation is to slay the dragon of fiscal deficits by slashing provincial expenditures. However, this approach is short-sighted and lacks long-term economic vision.

The danger is that slamming the fiscal brakes too hard will probably send their provincial economies flying through the windshield.

Regardless the dire contemporary fiscal circumstances Canada's provinces are facing, now is precisely the time for provincial governments to exercise economic leadership. They should embrace a strategic

economic policy that supports the private sector and is directed towards growing the provincial economy.

The reason for a redefined role for the provincial governments is eminently clear.

Despite unprecedented low interest rates, the private sector is hesitant to expand its productive capacity or initiate new investment opportunities.

In consequence, the public sector must pick up the ball and invest in the economic fundamentals that will grow a bigger economic pie and set a trajectory for employment creation.

In essence, what is required is to stretch out austerity programs over a longer timeframe. My prescription for the 2015 provincial budgets is to adopt a longer timeline for fiscal contraction, a more protracted implementation scenario and a smaller spoon-full of the bitter medicine. Furthermore, I believe that relying singularly on fiscal constraints is wrong.

I am a strong proponent of advocating a public sec-

tor agenda that embraces internal operational efficiencies, eliminates duplication, raises productivity, infuses an entrepreneurial mindset, modernizes economic governance and promotes public sector innovation.

During a protracted period of economic malaise, a fragile economic recovery and a sluggish record of economic activity, insisting on harsh fiscal austerity measures is a recipe for economic decimation.

In a mixed economy, economic growth should be a collaborative effort and an effective partnership between the public sector and the private sector. Faced with fiscal constraints, the public sector must increasingly rely on the private sector in order to spearhead investment and job creation. However, in the absence of an optimistic economic outlook from the private sector, the public sector must step up to the plate and kick start the economy.

In this regard, the public sector has a vital role to play in

promoting economic growth through facilitating foreign investment, promoting innovation and opening up new export markets.

In particular, the public sector must do a better job in realigning our human resources with the emerging opportunities of the new global economy. At a time when our human capital, comprised of the education, skills and competencies of our workforce, is a country's most valuable economic asset and resource, we cannot sit idly by and languish in excessively high rates of unemployment. We need to recognize that unemployment is a debilitating cost on our future potential. It is imperative that we nurture our human capital assets in order to best align our youth with the new job opportunities of the new global economy of the 21st century.

During tough economic times, provincial governments should lead by example. This means they should not ask of their citi-

zens more than what they ask of themselves. More specifically, provincial governments should not be exempt from the financial sacrifices and hardship that they impose on their citizens.

In consequence, provincial budgets should set the stage for managing the machinery of governance in a more spendthrift, efficient and effective manner. In the same breath, they should develop a strategic plan to simultaneously grow the economy and create new employment opportunities.

The three guiding lights that should inform our 2015 budgets are balance, perspective and vision. In short, a growth oriented strategy that embraces government spending reforms.

Swordsmanship offers challenge of leadership and self discipline skills

For Justin Skjonsberg the ancient sport of swordsmanship is not only challenging and fun, it is an excellent way to promote self-discipline, dedication and leadership.

Skjonsberg, who started the Academy of European Swordsmanship Rimbey Chapter last October enjoys the sport and encourages other to give it a try.

The twenty-five year-old’s passion for swordsmanship was fueled when he began attending swordsmanship classes in Edmonton more than a year ago.

He found he thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

However, he decided he didn’t wish to continue making the weekly trek to and from Edmonton, so he decided to look into offering classes locally.

Forshee Hall was decided on as a good central location for the Rimbey Chapter and Johanus Haider agreed to travel from Edmonton to be the head instructor.

Skjonsberg and Angus Dixon are assistant instructors.

The Academy of European Swordsmanship Rimbey

The Academy of European Swordsmanship Rimbey Chapter offers training in hand-to-hand, dagger, short sword, long sword and pole-arms.

Chapter offers training in hand-to-hand, dagger, short sword, long sword and pole-arms. Classes are Mondays from 7 to 10 p.m. Drop ins are welcome.

“We can have five to 20 people on any given night,” said Skjonsberg.

First year fencers use synthetic swords.

Fencers all wear regular leather fencing helmets and other appropriate equipment to ensure safety at all times.

“Safety is number one,” said Skjonsberg.

All matches are judged on a point system by a panel of three judges.

Along with training regarding swordsmanship, participants may be required to do physical activities such as push-ups, jumping jacks and other forms of conditioning.

Most of the participants who attend The Academy of European Swordsmanship Rimbey Chapter are between the ages of 13 and 16, although there are some older enthusiasts as well.

Ben Nesbitt from Rimbey, who attends the academy, said he enjoys learning the skill.

“It’s interesting. I like the challenge and enjoy the tactile thinking and planning.”

The last concert, held March 6, featured musician Kim Dunn and Jones said his performance was wonderful.

“The music just flowed out of his fingers.”

Born and raised in North Sydney, Nova Scotia, Kim Dunn started his musical career by studying jazz at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish. Three decades later this incredibly accomplished musician has shared the stage with the who’s who of East coast and international artists including Rita MacNeil, Bruce Guthro, Matt Minglewood, Jimmy Rankin, David Myles, Jill Barber, Dave Gunning, George Canyon, Alison Krauss and Philip Glass.

Dunn was the first re-

cipient of the East Coast Music Association’s Musician’s Achievement Award, an award designed to honor the integrity and merit of the consummate musician.

Dunn completed his first solo project, Take This Hammer, combining jazz, blues, soul and pop, in 2009.

He has performed his music with Symphony Nova Scotia and has received national exposure on CBC’s Canada Live and regionally on Atlantic Airwaves. Most recently, Kim hosted the Rita’s Tea Room Summer Concert Series in Big Pond, Nova Scotia, a musical tribute to Rita McNeil.

The house concert series will wrap up at the Beatty House on April 11 with a performance by Cassie and Maggie MacDonald, sisters, who will bring a taste of Celtic music to Rimbey. continued on page 13

Group to meet in Bluffton The Rimbey Regional Synergy Group holds regular bi-monthly meetings to hear updates on local industry activities, discuss local activity impacts and opportunities, and to share information about industry related practices in general. These meetings are also a great opportunity for industry reps to learn more about the agricultural practices and implications to the landowners in the local community.

Presentations on topics of local interest are regularly a part of the meetings as well. Most recent presentation topics have included play-based regulations, landowner negotiation and related rights, well-bore cementing and aquifer protection.

The March 19 regular meeting’s presentation topic will be focused on pipeline construction. A representative from Redcore, one of the group’s member companies, will give an overview from a construction perspective and be there to answer questions as well.

A regular component of the meetings

has companies that operate in the area provide information on their current and planned activities and answer questions that folks may have regarding their operations.

This is also a great opportunity for local residents and landowners to connect with the industry reps to let them know about local community events and initiatives that might be of interest.

Meeting attendance typically includes landowners and community residents, local county representatives, local industry companies, local businesses and the Alberta Energy regulator. Meetings are held in Bluffton on the third Thursday of every second month, January through November.

There is no meeting in July, but the group typically hosts a large Open House event in June.

Rimbey woman plays goal in the CWHL championship

A Rimbey athlete is back from Markham, Ontario where she competed with the Calgary Inferno Women’s Hockey Team in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League championship for the Clarkson Cup. Camille Trautman, goalie for the Calgary team said she is pleased to have had the chance to compete in the tournament held March 4- 7.

“It was a good experience getting to play in a tournament like that,” she said.

The Infernos lost against Montreal two games in the semi finals and although Trautman only played 17 minutes in the third period of the final game, she said it was good to be in net.

“I felt pretty good. It was good to play in a game and be part of it (the tournament).

Team members watched the final game between Montreal and Boston which ended 3-2 for Boston in overtime.

Trautman said she especially enjoyed watching the Montreal goalie, Charlene Labonte play.

“She is very good,” she said.

Being beat out in the playoffs was unfortunate, but overall Trautman said she very much enjoyed the tournament.

“It would have been nice to win, but you can’t win them all,” she said.

The CWHL is comprised

of professional teams from Calgary, Toronto, Montreal, Brampton and Boston and is the highest caliber of female hockey in North America.

Many of the women Olympic team members from Canada and the United States play on these teams during the years in-between the Olympics.

Trautman has played hockey since she was fouryears-old and competed in the Rimbey minor hockey system until she was 13.

“I started playing goal when I was eight or nine years old,” she said. “I loved it, it was fun,” she said.

During her early teens she played major midget hockey in Red Deer and then spent three years playing with the Red Deer College Queens while she was enrolled in kinesiology at the college.

Now 22, Trautman has completed her rookie year with Calgary Inferno, ranking fourth goalie overall in the league.

The Clarkson Cup tournament marked the end of her competitive hockey career.

“Hockey has been good to me, but its time to start something new in my life and move on. And I do want to be on the farm.”

Trautman also enjoys ball hockey, biking and quading and would like to continue to play hockey at a recreational level.

Go Renegades: Rimbey Midget Renegades defeated Hinton 9 to 2 in Rimbey Fri., March 6 in the first round of league playoffs. They played Hinton in Hinton later in the weekend winning 3-0.

The Renegades advanced to the second round of playoffs against Sylvan Lake Wednesday.

Reader expresses gratitude about living in Rimbey community Dear Editor, I feel compelled to say that I am overwhelmingly grateful to be living here.

Not only is this area scenic and abundant, the folks I have come to meet and

know over the last few years are collectively the most friendly, hard-working, kind and generous people I’ve known. Good people live here!

NATIONAL FARM SAFETY WEEK MARCH 15 - 22, 2015

‘Be the difference’ encourages all Canadians to be farm safety champions This March, the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA) and the Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) are encouraging all Canadians to become farm safety champions as a part of Canadian Agricultural Safety Week 2015 presented by Farm Credit Canada (FCC), which runs from March 15 to 21, 2015.

Canadian Agricultural Safety Week (CASW) is an annual public education campaign focusing on the importance of safe agriculture.

This year’s theme is Be the Difference, and organizers want to inspire all Canadians to become farm safety champions through feature champion testimonials, farmer resources and a social media contest.

“This year, we are focusing on the power of the positive.

We know that we need to engage with all Canadians to make farms safer places to work and live,” says Marcel Hacault, Executive Director of CASA. “We’re encouraging all Canadians to become farm safety champions. Health care providers, teachers, agribusiness leaders, community members and farmers all play an important role in promoting farm safety.”

“As a farmer myself and in the role as President at the CFA, I see the importance of farm safety firsthand – on

my farm and for farms across Canada,” says Ron Bonnett, CFA President. “Injuries on the farm are no joke, and they happen much more often than they should. We need to work together so that farm safety is acknowledged as important and “Our commitment to Canadian agriculture extends beyond financing by helping those in the industry successfully manage risks on their farms or agribusiness operations,” says Brenda Stasuik, FCC Director, Strategy, Government Relations and Corporate Social Responsibility. “We’re pleased to partner with CASA for Canadian Agriculture Safety Week to empower producers with the information and resources they need to make their operations safer.”

As a part of CASW 2015, CASA and CFA are working with the PEI Federation of Agriculture to host Be the Difference launch activities in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island on March 16th, 2015. Activities include a luncheon with speeches from farm safety champions and half-day training on hazard and risk assessment; Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) or CPR. “The PEI Federation of Agriculture is pleased to see this year’s CASW launch on

Prince Edward Island soil,” says Charlotte Crooks, Farm Safety Coordinator. “We are proud of our farm safety initiatives in the province and we look forward to seeing what others are doing to “Be the Difference” in their areas.

This event is a wonderful way to share knowledge and bring awareness to farm safety na-

tionwide.”

Canadian Agricultural Safety Week takes place every year during the third week of March. This year, CASW runs from March 15th to 21st.

The first goal for Rimbey came from Wyatt Flemming, assisted by Jared Lindley and Milton Elliot, Cory Cech scored the second goal,assisted by Wyatt Flemming and Chase Makofka. The third goal came from Carson Lukocs, assisted by Curtis Rangen and Milton Elliot. Goal number four was scored by Wyatt Flemming assisted by Cory Cech and Keefer Garnick. Chase Makofka scored the fifth goal on a power play. He was assisted by Curtis Range and Brett Scott. The sixth goal was scored by Lane Franklin, assisted by Wyatt Flemming. The Renegades play the Lakers on Friday in Sylvan and will return to Rimbey for the final game of the best of three series, if necessary.

Fun gymnastics meet attracts good crowd

A total of 300 spectators showed up to watch young gymnasts showcase their talents at a Rimbey Gymnastics Club Annual Rock ‘n Roll Regional Fun Meet.

As well as gymnasts from the Rimbey Club, the 90 gymnasts who registered for the meet held March 8 came from Fairview, Stony Plain, Lacombe, Carstairs and Sundre.

The meet went well, said board chairman Jill Bellows.

“This was our third annual meet and we are looking forward to next year,” said Bellows.

Male gymnasts competed on vault, bars, floor, parallel bars, rings, mushroom (pummel horse) and girls competed on vault, bars, floor and balance beam.

All gymnasts received a medal at the fun meet according to their overall score.

Rimbey Gymnastics Club has 125 registered gymnasts ranging in age from three to 16.

Alena Dubielew and Brenda Krossa are the coaches.

Rimbey Municipal Library offers selection of books by Alberta Authors

Rimbey Municipal Library is now featuring some unique and interesting books written by Alberta authors.

The collection is made up of 41 books and includes a variety of genres.

“It is wonderful to have the opportunity to support local authors and local publishers,” said Rimbey librarian Jean Keetch.

The new display has been created in partnership with the Writers’ Guild of Alberta and The Book Publishers Association of Alberta. Due to the popularity of the first Read Alberta Books collection, Parkland has created a second display, with their partners, to travel to the region’s public libraries.

Any one of Parkland’s 50 public libraries can sign up to host the travelling display. Patrons can borrow as many books as they want, and when the books are re-

turned to their library they will join the display, courtesy of Parkland’s delivery van.

“While Alberta boasts tremendous writing talent and a vibrant publishing industry, the reading public has had no easy way to identify locally-produced

material,” says Carol Holmes, Executive Director of the Writers’ Guild. “This project goes a long way to raise awareness and interest in our homegrown authors and publishers.”

Alberta and the Parkland Library staff to showcase the wonderful literary work that is being done in Alberta,” added Kieran Leblanc, Executive Director of the Book Publishers Association of Alberta.

Reader questions downsizing of the proposed lodge LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Dear Editor, I have just read an article in the Red Deer Life paper about Rimbeyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s longawaited seniors lodge.

The $13.3 million is Provincial cash infusion that was arranged last spring, thanks to Joe Anglin.

At that time it was designated for an 80 unit senior lodge, and now it is only going to be a 40 unit building, states the article in the paper.

What has become of the proposed 80 new units that were to be built with the $13.3 million?

The very first idea for Rimbey to have another senior lodge, began three years ago.

At that time, Joe Anglin was chairman of the Rimoka Housing Foundation (RHF) board with Keith Beebe and Gawney Hinkley as Ponoka County representatives on the RMH board.

The County of Ponoka bought the land site and hold it in trust to the RHF. I sincerely want to thank the County of Ponoka for the land purchase for this new lodge and their continuing representation on the RHF board. I hope I can live long enough to see this lodge completed and that it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take another three years!

Bachand Tildie “Tilda” Marie BERZE Mr. Joseph Berze of the Centerview District passed away suddenly on Sunday March 8, 2015 at the age of 81 years.

Joe was born in Drumheller, Alberta on December 6, 1933 to Joseph Sr. and Helen Berze.

On August 20, 1954, Joe was united in marriage to Lois Freeman. For the first six years of their marriage, Joe and Lois travelled all around Saskatchewan as Joe was working on a seismic crew. In 1957 they purchased the farm in the Centerview District where Joe and Lois raised their three kids. It was during this same time that Joe took a job helping to construct the Rimbey Gas Plant. Joe continued working at the plant after its completion and over the next 37 years worked his way up through the ranks obtaining the position of Maintenance Foreman. In all Joe worked in the oil industry for 43 years. Joe also kept busy running the farm, first producing grain and later cattle. Eventually his son Blair took over the daily operation of the farm.

Joe’s first love was his wife Lois and his family, his second love was sports. Joe played all sports, hockey, baseball, curling and he excelled at all of them. He mastered the game of golf and was well known for his long drives. Not only did Joe enjoy playing sports, but he also enjoyed coaching teams in both hockey and baseball.

Joe and Lois travelled all over North America in their motor coach and they very much enjoyed their journeys and the people they travelled with. They finally settled for spending the winter months in their park model in Blythe, California which they did for eleven years. Joe was a member of the Bentley Elks and also served as the secretary for the Forshee Hall Board for many years.

Predeceased by his parents Joseph Sr. and Helen and by one brother Zoltan. Joe is survived by his loving wife Lois of Bentley, daughters; Charlene and her partner Richard of Alhambra, JoAnne (Stan) Rumsey of Bentley and son; Blair of Bentley. Joe also leaves to mourn his loss, five grandchildren; Vicki, Tim, Chris, Megan, Jordan and his five great grandchildren; Rachel, Madison, Grace, Olivia and Hudson.

Joe was passionate about everything he did in life. He was a true leader, whether it be leading a team he played on or coached, leading a crew of men at work or leading the convoy of travellers down the highway.

A gathering of friends and family will be held from the Bentley Seniors Drop In Centre in Bentley, Alberta on Saturday March 14, 2015 from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM. If friends desire and in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Mrs. Tildie (Jeffcott) Bachand passed away peacefully in the Rimbey Hospital on February 27, 2015. Tildie was born in Camrose, Alberta on December 25, 1924. She is survived by her sister Marion Kravic of Camrose, Alberta. She also leaves to mourn her family Irene Flichel (Frank) of Regina, Saskatchewan, Fay Jeffcott (Jim) of Ponoka, Clarence (Evelyn) Jeffcott of Alder Flats, Leonard (Jodi) Jeffcott of Leslieville, Jerry (Tammy) Jeffcott of Alder Flats, Reinhold (Heather) Jeffcott of Alder Flats, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many nephews, nieces and cousins.

Tildie was predeceased by her husband Ernest (Ernie) Bachand, husband John (Jack) Jeffcott, her mother Augusta and father Charlie Johnson, brothers Ralph Johnson and Albin Johnson, sisters Alma Johanson and Myrtle Long, and grandson Jarvis Jeffcott.

We will love and miss her dearly.

A Service of Remembrance for Tildie will be held later in the summer. Cremation entrusted to the Rocky Mountain Crematorium, Rocky Mountain House, Alberta.

THANK YOU KRIEGER Mr. Frederick Oscar Krieger of Bluffton, Alberta passed away suddenly in the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre on Monday March 9, 2015 at the age of 71 years.

Predeceased by his parents Albert and Helena and by three sisters; Hilda, Linda, Ida, two brothers; Henry and Edward, Fred is survived by his partner Ruby Johnson of Bluffton, two daughters; Elizabeth (Josh) KriegerThul of Ohaton, Alberta and Stephanie (Warren) Liba of Legal, Alberta. Fred also leaves to mourn his loss three grandchildren; Drake, Deacon and Delilah as well as two brothers; Sam Krieger of Westlock, George Krieger of Warburg and one sister Olga Ewasiuk of Edmonton.

Funeral Services were held from the Bluffton Community Hall on Monday March 16, 2015 with Reverend Deborah Laing officiating. Interment followed in the Iola Fairview Cemetery.

Bentley ladies bonspiel Continued from page 17 The Whittaker team felt they really had got their money’s worth over the weekend. Besides playing six games and winning prize money after each win, there was free food including a banquet, raffles and a silent auction, and games and fun galore.

Friday night a bison supper for the curlers was donated by Elisabeth and Urs Mueller. Saturday and Sunday mornings a free continental style breakfast was available courtesy MGM Lincoln Mercury. A catered banquet by Rochelle’s Bakes & Cakes took place Saturday night at the club.

Because of generous sponsors contacted by steadfast

volunteers there were also door prizes for everyone.

Best costume was awarded to the Cirque du Soleil “troop”.

The draw master was Ken Brown.

Winning the $1,000 cash/travel voucher “Trip to Vegas” raffle was Joe and Margrit Rohrer from Red Deer County.

Karen Jaffray won the gift basket raffle, and there was a raffle of four rounds of golf at the Lacombe Golf & Country Club.
