Rallies were held across Canada on Saturday, as people protested the federal government's proposed anti-terrorism bill. Bill C-51 would give police much more expansive powers and also allow them to detain terror suspects. It also provides new powers to Canada's spy agency.

Many protesters are concerned that the bill will be used to silence critics of governmental policy, effectively squashing freedom of speech, which is currently a protected freedom under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

“There would be no budget for solid waste, so that means all the landfills would have to close.”

Last year, the CSWM approved borrowing $45 million-plus to close the Cumberland landfill ($10,620,000), close the Campbell River facility ($13 million-plus) and to expand the Cumberland landfill into an engineered facility ($21,550,000).

The latter consists of excavation and construction of storm water ponds, re-contouring, and installing a geomembrane liner to control storm water and leachate, among other installations.

The enthusiasm that local residents are showing for the City of Courtenay’s centennial celebrations has been tremendous so far, and the centennial celebration committee is hard at work planning more community events and fundraising initiatives.

All proceeds from the centennial celebrations will be added to the Centennial Legacy Endowment, a fund that will be donated to the Comox Valley Community Foundation, where it will be directed to fund programs that specifically support youth.

“We want to support Courtenay’s youth and provide them with a community experience they will value as they go through life, no matter where their future takes them,” said former Courtenay Mayor Ron Webber.

Comox Valley filmmaker in running for web series Rowland makes shortlist in funding program for emerging content creators Erin Haluschak Record Staff

Mitch Rowland made sure his dad brought his video camera along with him whenever he headed up to Mount Washington.

After filming him snowboarding, Rowland chose to edit the footage at his home on Waveland Road rather than hang out with his friends.

"I always liked film, but I wasn't really aware of what was out there," he explained over the phone from Vancouver.

The Comox Valley filmmaker is now in his third year in Motion Picture Arts at Capilano University, and thanks to his collaboration as a producer on the web series Under Construction, is in contention for a $50,000 production grant and distribution package from Telus.

Rowland, along with fellow student, director Shelby Wilson, created the series for Telus' Storyhive contest— a communitypowered funding program for emerging content creators in B.C. and Alberta.

Last year Rowland pitched an idea for the contest but didn't make it past the preliminary round. This year, Wilson approached him with the idea, and the pair, along with writer/ producer Justin MacGregor, made it into the cut along with 29 other web series out of an initial 200 entries.

minutes, centres around 25-yearold Candice Myers, a flagger who, after a series of antagonizing incidents, dreams of climbing the chain of the roadside construction

industry. Her aspirations seem harder to reach when she must prove herself to her erratic coworkers and boss that she has what it takes.

"Shelby and Justin had the idea first, and all of December we did planning. In January we really got started guns a' blazing, and (began filming) on the 17th on the exteriors. We actually shot on a commercial construction site," he explained.

Following completion of the pilot, MacGregor and Wilson created a pitch video, updated the series' profile, and the team is now ready to enter the second round, which involves a final series of voting, open to the public, from March 16 to 26. "(The judges) take into account the number of votes, but also analyze how you market yourself. In film and in art, so much about it is how (you can do that)," explained Rowland.

The top two series receive the grand award, along with distribution from Telus and exposure and recognition through a variety of platforms within the industry across Canada, he added.

While he noted the team hasn't had a lot of time to think about if the series doesn't receive the award, Rowland said they have discussed marketing material to pitch the series to other networks or a bigger broadcaster.

If the production team receives the grand prize, Rowland said he will stay in Vancouver after school is finished to help with production. If they don't make the final cut, he will return to the Comox Valley for the summer to work — oddly enough — in construction.

Closing and capping the Cumberland dump will give it a 20-year span, Jangula notes.

“But in 20 years that membrane will break down,” he said.

Phase 1 of the closure has been budgeted at $8,050,000. Pend-

ing board approval, construction could be complete by October.

“This matter is not over,” said Jangula, noting the need to consider Waste to Energy (WTE) systems. “It could save us literally tens of millions.”

“The public wants to go that way, there’s no question,” Nichol said of WTE.

The Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP) includes WTE as a future option. However, as it stands, the Environment Ministry won’t approve WTE until the region reaches the 70 per cent diversion target, Kishi notes.

“When Waste to Energy becomes an option for us, you’re still going to require a landfill,” he

said. “Whatever process you do for WTE, there’s usually something leftover at the end. A lot of times that end product becomes more concentrated and sometimes even more toxic than the stuff that went in at the beginning.”

The board also approved terms of reference of an Island-wide special committee on solid waste.

“Is there a way that the whole Island can work together to deal with solid waste?” Kishi said.

“Each region has different challenges, but we all have challenges in dealing with solid waste.”

The CSWM operating budget is $11,754,067. The capital budget is $11,142,444.

Who needs Hydro? Not Rotraut Erin Haluschak Record Staff

Rotraut Knopp is looking forward to sunnier skies — literally.

The 71-year-old Ships Point resident had been living without electricity since Oct. 30 when BC Hydro cut off power to her trailer after she stopped paying her monthly legacy meter fee for her analog meter.

Following a month of propane heat, oil lamps and making soup on her Coleman stove, Knopp installed solar panels in December.

While she admits it is not as convenient as electric power, she said “it’s been really worthwhile.

“It’s going really well. The way I do things have changed; I’m more aware of what needs to be done.

I don’t need to do laundry when it’s dark for days.”

Because of health implications, Knopp refused to have a smart meter installed, and had been paying the usage portion of her hydro bill, but refused the monthly fee.

In April 2014, the B.C. Utilities Commission approved BC Hydro’s request for a monthly charge of around $30 for reading an analog meter and administration fees.

Knopp said she owed more than $150 in fees, but the idea of paying to restore the service or installing a smart meter was not an option.

She was served 10 notices from BC Hydro since June, and the company ultimately cut her power at the

“We make a lot of effort to work with the customer to make arrangements for them to pay their bill or to arrange a (payment) schedule,” said Ted Olynyk, BC Hydro’s

manager of community relations for Vancouver Island. “But the rest of us are expected to pay our bill … all of our customers are treated equally. If you buy gas or go to a restaurant – it’s the same. Your bill

must be paid.”

Knopp remained defiant and is now completely “off the grid”.

Knopp explained while she has added additional solar batteries since the original installation, the panels are working out very well, allowing her to “be more conscious of my surroundings.”

“If it’s cloudy the whole day, I’ll wait until there’s enough energy to do laundry or vacuum, then I’ll do it.”

She said as a result of installing the panels, she has become more self-sufficient, and noted even on the cloudiest of days, she still gets some electricity.

If the power to the batteries drops below 60 per cent, Knopp uses her generator as a back-up source. Fully charged, the batteries provide power for

about four or five days, she added.

“Last week there was a lot of sunshine and I used just enough power for what came in. (To use panels) you have to be willing to learn and I like learning.”

Knopp hopes her switch to solar electricity will inspire others to think about their power use. As a result of her conversion, she has neighbours considering the switch.

“Using solar allows me to think more about what nature is doing and act accordingly.

I’m glad — it teaches me things about what I haven’t paid attention to before.”

New tax breaks can add up What you don’t know about tax changes for the 2014 tax year could cost you a lot of money.

“Every year the government reacts to the state of the economy and what voters are wanting,” says Nicole Cahoon, a local certified general accountant.

“Knowing about the latest credits and cuts introduced last fall could save families hundreds of dollars.”

The most prominent change is the Family Tax Cut, which allows eligible couples with children living at home to transfer up to $50,000 of income from the higher-earning spouse to the lower-earning spouse.

That change alone, says Cahoon, could save a family up to $2,000.

Other credits for families include an increase to the Child Fitness Credit – with the maximum amount of eligible fees now set at $1,000 per child – and an additional tax credit of $500 for a child with a disability.

Tax-deductible adoption expenses have also increased to $15,000 per child.

abilities, as well as costs for service animals. Cahoon adds that small business operators and owners of qualified farm and fishing properties will benefit from an increase to the lifetime capital gains allowance.

Local “unsung heroes” will also get a bit of compensation for their efforts this year in the form of a new credit for search and rescue, and firefighting volunteers.

“Qualified volunteers are entitled to claim a 15 per cent non-refundable tax credit based on an amount of $3,000, as long as they’ve performed at least 200 hours of eligible services in the year,” Cahoon said.

Because all credits and deductions have specific requirements that must be met, Cahoon recommends speaking with a professional accountant

before filing your taxes – or save the headache and have an accountant prepare your tax return for you, which she says is the best way to ensure you benefit from all eligible deductions – this year and beyond.

“It’s our job to know the ins and outs of all the new amendments,” she said.

“Unlike tax filing programs or basic tax preparers, CGAs have the knowledge, training and experience to offer advice for the future. It’s much more than just plugging in numbers to save money this year, it’s about looking at the big picture and finding ways to maximize returns over the long-term.”

Tourism Pro-D Days coming to Westerly Tourism Vancouver Island's fifth annual Tourism Pro-D Days will be held on Wednesday, March 25 at the Westerly Hotel in the Courtenay Banquet Room.

Workshops will focus on improving the impact of online communications by becoming a better digital storyteller. Sessions will also look at the value of collaboration amongst industry stakeholders in the Vancouver Island region, and recruitment and retention plans for the 2015 season.

Left-lane legislation loony

.C.’s Ministry of Transportation is hogging the left-hand lane, speeding toward another misplaced priority.

Minister Todd Stone’s announcement this month that the province is looking at legislation targeting left-lane hogs on the highway is populist pandering, it’s unnecessary and it’s undesirable.

Stone suggests left-lane huggers are particular to British Columbia, coincidentally the province in which he happens to commute to work. Apparently, everyone who drives slower than our transportation minister is a slowpoke and everyone who drives faster than him is a maniac.

This isn’t a new law - it's simply one the police have trouble enforcing (Motor Vehicle Act Section 150 - fail to keep right).

Keep in mind that the 120 kilometres-per-hour posting on the Inland Island Highway is not a suggested speed; it’s a maximum speed.

So, in order to pass someone driving at 120 kph, you are technically breaking the law.

Stone says ICBC statistics and RCMP traffic reports show that failure to keep right causes a lot of collisions, but we suspect that the impatient drivers who surround the cautious ones are every bit as culpable.

Must of our roads suit only the fast and the furious? Already the B.C. Liberal government has raised speed limits, conditioning motorists to race at Mach 1. Any crackdown on left-lane hogs is going to empower tailgaters and road ragers and cause car crashes. The province has been erecting signs along the highways gently reminding motorists to keep right; that should suffice.

Yes, the left lane is there to get us where we’re going, faster. Or we could just leave the house a couple of minutes earlier.

Odd how times change. Remember the “Speed kills” campaign a few years back?

Apparently now the argument is “Lack of speed kills”.

In 18 years of booking MusicFest, the one regret Cox has is not recording more often — though he notes the inherent legal risks.

"But this time they requested it," he said.

A couple of days before the show, Cox watched the foursome rehearse at the Cumberland Hotel. It was all he could do not to yell out from Dunsmuir Avenue: 'Do you have any idea what's going on in here!?'

The mutual respect was evident when the four men took the stage. Cox notes that Lee, Garrett and Wilcox were "extremely influenced" by Burton, who invented a 'chicken pickin' style which has become the fundamental technique of electric guitar playing in country music.

But magnitude and musicianship aside, what I recall July 12, 2013 exemplified what MusicFest is about: a bunch of excellent musicians doing what they do best — and having fun doing it.

•John Jorgenson and his bluegrass band, J2B2, has been added to the 2015 MusicFest lineup.

"John's been to the festival three or four times," Cox said, noting Jorgenson's progression from lead guitarist in Elton John's band to his prowess as a gypsy jazz guitarist.

Dear editor, On Feb. 13, 2015 the US government approved plantings of the genetically modified (GM), “non-browning” apple.

The apple, which does not brown for 15 days or more after slicing, was developed by Okanagan Specialty Fruits of BC; rights were sold to US biotech company Intrexon, on Feb. 27, 2015 for $41 million, $30 million in stock of Intrexon and $10 million cash. This GM apple is not

yet approved in Canada. The BC Fruit Growers Association officially opposes the GM apple.

Apple lovers everywhere want apples to look fresh only when they are fresh. We do not want an apple which was cut two weeks ago! While it might look good, one does not know what composition has changed inside.

A GM apple is not the natural fruit we know and trust.

Public feedback leads CVRD to choose ‘Scenario C’ Dear editor, On behalf of the project team working on the Comox Valley Regional District’s south region liquid waste management plan (LWMP), I want to thank the community for the letters, emails, phone calls and visits provided over the last six weeks sharing feedback on the four short-listed options for wastewater management in the Royston/ Union Bay area.

We heard from many residents and members of the broader

community about the importance of restoring and protecting the environment in Baynes Sound, the significance of the estimated costs and the need for the project to move forward.

The community was encouraged to return feedback by the end of February to help inform a triple-bottom-line analysis and risk assessment to be undertaken by the public and technical advisory committees and steering committee. That challenging work occurred last week over

two days and ultimately led to Scenario ‘C’ – discharge off Cape Lazo to the Strait of Georgia – being recommended for referral to south sewer project partners K’ómoks First Nation (KFN) and the Village of Cumberland.

Scenario C would see wastewater from the area treated at a facility in the south region (location to be determined), then piped across the estuary and through the Town of Comox to the existing Comox Valley Water Pollution Control Centre on

Brent Road. There, it would be combined with effluent from the existing facility and discharged through a single outfall.

This scenario is now with the KFN for review until early April, at which time their feedback will be considered by the LWMP steering committee. The Village of Cumberland will then also consider their involvement and the next steps for their own LWMP process. If all three project partners agree the Cape Lazo scenario is the best approach, a

draft CVRD south region LWMP will be developed and brought back to the public for further consultation this summer.

We expect to communicate a project update through our spring newsletter in May. Once again – thank-you. Public feedback is a critical part of the LWMP process and we appreciate all of those who took the time to share their thoughts.

After missing watershed forum, resident writes letter to pose a few questions to TimberWest Dear editor, Unfortunately I was unable to attend the “Re-Think Our Watershed,” forum hosted by the Comox Valley Conservation Strategy group up at the Stan Hagen Theatre on Feb. 24.

I had a couple of questions that I was hoping that representatives from TimberWest might have been able to answer for us. So perhaps if I raise them now, the company could kindly

respond via this paper, and address some of the concerns we here in the local community have had for some time?

1. Word coming off the local claim (Oyster River Division) in past few years has it the minimal, “sustainable” timber stands that TimberWest plans to harvest in the future, will be only some 40 years old, or is it, even 30-year-old trees that will be coming down, as some are

saying?

For those who may be unaware of it, our Ministry of Forests… indeed confirms that, “..the determination of minimum harvest age on private-managed forest land - i.e. like the entire east coast of Vancouver Island south of Campbell River - is at the discretion of the owner.”)

Turboprop begins West Coast leg of tour in Courtenay Popular percussionist returns for CD release This is a week not to miss! Turboprop’s CD Release Tour.

Ever since a year and a half ago, when Ernesto Cervini played a stunning Sunday night concert on the Georgia Strait Jazz Society stage, jazz fans have repeatedly asked about his return performance.

Trouble is, with international acts, there is very little flexibility.

Fortunately, with a stable Thursday night slot at the Avalanche Bar & Grill, touring jazz groups and musicians know there is a time and place specific to the genre available in the Comox Valley.

And so it is that Ernesto Cervini and Turboprop will begin the West Coast leg of their Canadian CD Release Tour in Courtenay, this Thursday, March 19 before they play in Vancouver and Victoria.

more instruments to the fold to create the new sextet, Turboprop.

The band features his regular

quartet of Joel Frahm on tenor sax, Adrean Farrugia on piano, Dan Loomis on bass and Cervini

on drums, plus Tara Davidson on alto sax and William Carn on trombone.

The band’s sound is reminiscent of the hard-swinging jazz messenger bands of Art Blakey, although they tackle a wide range of music; from Charlie Parker to Claude Debussy to Radiohead, plus originals from all the band members. They have already toured twice across Canada to rave reviews.

Their new CD “Turboprop” was originally released on Feb. 19 at Jazz Bistro in Toronto, and the band will feature cuts from the album and more. We have the opportunity of hearing live music from this album and more this week.

Unlike previous Cervini concerts, there have been no advance ticket sales for this concert.

Admission is $10 for GSJS members and $12 for non-members respectively.

Chiefs blanked in B.C. opener Earle Couper Record Staff

Three teams got off to a winning start on day one of the B.C. Midget Tier 1 minor hockey championships in Courtenay Action got underway Sunday at the seven-team event, which runs March 15-19 with Happy’s Source for Sports Chiefs the host team.

Vancouver Island champs Happy’s played the feature game Sunday night after the opening ceremonies and were thumped 8-0 by Prince George.

The teams were scoreless after one period with Prince George potting four goals in each of the second and third periods.

Chris Metcalfe and Markus Plamondon paced Prince George with two goals each while Jamie Ferguson earned the 16-save shutout. Chiefs’ netminder Jared Leblanc made 28 saves.

Action got underway at 10:30 a.m. Sunday with PCAHA champion Seafair blanking North Central district reps Prince George 3-0, with all the scoring coming in the first period.

At 1:30 p.m. PCAHA runner-up North Vancouver and Vancouver Island runner-up Nanaimo skated to a 2-2 tie, with Nanaimo netting the equalizer midway through the third.

In the 4:30 p.m. tilt, Kelowna clipped the Northeast Trackers 6-2, building period leads of 3-0 and 2-1. Spencer Copan led Kelowna with two goals while D-man Shawn Emilio Guison contributed four assists.

The tourney continued Monday, with Comox Valley going up against North Vancouver.

Play resumes today with Comox Valley vs. Nanaimo at 8 a.m., Seafair vs. Northeast

Trackers at 11 a.m., Prince George vs. North Vancouver at 2 p.m., Kelowna vs. Comox Valley at 5 p.m. and Nanaimo vs.

Northeast Trackers at 8 p.m.

Wednesday’s games go at 11 a.m. (Nanaimo vs. Seafair), 2 p.m. (Northeast Trackers vs. North Vancouver), 5 p.m.

(Kelowna vs. Prince George) and 8 p.m. (Comox Valley vs.

Seafair).

The round-robin portion of the championship concludes Thursday, with North Vancouver vs. Kelowna at 8 a.m., Nanaimo vs. Prince George at 11 a.m. and Northeast Trackers vs. Comox Valley at 2 p.m.

The top two teams meet at 8 p.m. for the B.C. championship.

All games are at Comox Valley Sports Centre Arena #1, with admission by donation.

Cassie Sharpe won the gold medal at a World Cup freestyle skiing competition Thursday, March 12 in Tignes, France.

Sharpe, of Comox, finished first in the women’s halfpipe event with a score of 93.80.

The event marked the end of the 2014-2015 FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup season. The Canadian team was coming off competing at the Canadian Open championships in Calgary, where Sharpe finished second.

For Sharpe, it was the first World Cup victory for the 22-year-old.

A 2015 World Championship silver medallist, Sharpe soared to an impressive score of 93.80 to beat a stacked field that included Olympic and X Games medallists.

In second was the most recent Olympic bronze medallist from Japan, Ayana Ozonuka, who scored 90.40. Ozonuka sits atop the World Cup standings with 240 points while Sharpe is fourth with 145 points.

Third went to X Games bronze medallist Brita Sigourney, from the USA, who finished with a score of 86.40.

“I’m so stoked about the run I put down,” said Sharpe. “It was a lot fun.

My riding has definitely improved and I’ve become a stronger skier since the World Championships.

Just making the finals was a huge accomplishment with this field. It was really stacked.

“It definitely a good feeling knowing that I can compete with this group and I can mix it up a bit with them. It’s fun knowing that I can challenge these girls.”

Sharpe has attributed a lot of her success to pushing herself with new tricks including a left cork nine that no other woman is currently doing. The trick made its debut at the Canadian Open last week and

helped Sharpe finish second in Calgary.

“It’s a great way to end the World Cup season,” said Trennon Paynter, head coach of the halfpipe team.

“Cassie’s run was pretty mind blowing. Her upside down and above the pipe trick was higher than any woman ever. She made history for the sport today. Everyone was so impressed by it. It was great to be a part of it and see her first major victory.”

“She really hit a new gear here.

The best of the best came to Tignes and Cassie came out on top. To have her on the team as a new athlete and to see her progress has been really cool.”

Margaret lived a long and wonderful life enriched by her love of family, friends, music, art, travel and the church.

July 9, 1924 – March 1, 2015 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Gordie, our father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Gord was born the fifth child to Robert and Anslie Cochrane in Dauphin, Manitoba.

Gord was raised in Dauphin through graduation of high school. He immediately joined the Royal Canadian Airforce to serve his country in WWII, and was sent to England. In 1945 he returned to Dauphin where he soon married his school mate Dodie Baird. He then decided to buy his first truck and move out west to Courtenay in 1948. Gord then went into the fuel and trucking business hauling anything from coal to potatoes. Later on, he then went into the road construction business. After some time, he sold the company to what is now known as Tayco Paving. In 1963 he purchased Three Way Service Ltd., the Volkswagen Dealership. Not too long after he bought the Ford dealership and was known as Comox Valley Ford Ltd. He found his passion in the auto business and spent the rest of his working life until retiring in the mideighties. Gord was an active member of the Comox Valley Curling Club and Sunnydale Golf Club.

Gord was predeceased by his mother and father, his sister Muriel Dickenson of Ontario, his brother Harold (Mickey) of Calgary, his brother Ken of Comox. He is survived by his sisters Rita Melnuk of Calgary and Ollie Acorn of Comox and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his best friend and ex-wife Dodie and his three children: son Rick (Janet) Cochrane, daughter Leslie (Drew) Pederson and daughter Cindy McPherson (Randy Bennett), five grandchildren; Chris Cochrane, Severin Pederson, Ingram (Jenifer) Pederson, Erin (Parker) Humphrey, Evan McPherson (Katelyn Smith), five great-grandchildren; Hanna & Tyler Pederson, Ethan, Tamryn & Colton McPherson and Jaxson and Lucas Humphrey.

The family would like to thank staff and friends at Casa Loma for friendship, fun and loving care where Gord resided the last couple of years. Also to the staff at the Cumberland Dialysis Unit. A very special thank you to Dr. Nancy McFadden and staff for your constant compassionate care over the years, Greg at Livingroom Pharmacy and staff, and lastly the team of nephrologists at Nanaimo Hospital, Dr. Carson, Dr. Booth and Dr. Crume.

We will announce at a later date a celebration of life for family and friends. It was Dad’s wish to have a party for him. His quote “I had a long and good life�.

Gilda McDonald Gilda Ernestine McDonald (nee Pelletier), born August 27, 1926 at home in the beautiful Qu’Appelle Valley, Saskatchewan and passed away peacefully March 12, 2015.

Gilda married Campbell McDonald February 2, 1946, after he was honourably discharged from the Canadian Army. Predeceased by daughter Dolores Gilda McDonald December 3, 1993, husband Campbell McDonald March 17, 1995, brothers George and Charlie and sister Martha. Survived by sons Larry (Darlene), Gerry (Zellah) and Murdoch and daughter Linda Loft. Also grandchildren Michael, Kelly, Cristi, Kayla, Sherwin, Thomas, Sarah, Jerry and Katherine as well as five great grandchildren. Also survived by sisters Margaret, Bertha, Isabel, Mary, Harriet and Madeline.

Shortly after Larry’s birth in Regina, they moved to the Comox Valley where Gerry, Murdoch and Dolores were born. After living in Victoria, where Linda joined the family, and Vancouver for short periods, they once again returned to the beautiful Comox Valley.

Ma lived a full happy life and her door was always open with a plate of fresh baked cookies on the table.

No service by request. There will be a small family gathering to inter Gilda’s ashes with those of husband Campbell in the Memorial Wall at the Courtenay Civic Cemetery at a later date.

JOHNSTON, Norman March 13, 1940 – March 10, 2015 Norm passed away peacefully at Glacier View Lodge, 3 days short of his 75th birthday. Predeceased by his parents and his sister Margaret Mann. Norm was born in Vernon, BC. He joined the Military as a Radar Tech and was posted to Winnipeg where he met Bernice and they were married in 1961. They had postings to France, Germany, Cold Lake and Comox. They have lived in the Comox Valley for 44 years. After he retired from the military, he worked at Elk Falls Mill and owned C&N Motors in Comox.

After retirement, Norm joined the Comox Fire Department and became a Fire Prevention Officer and the Assistant Fire Chief.

Norm loved golf and going to watch his grandson Kyle play hockey and his daughter Michelle and granddaughter Rebecca skate.

Norm and Bernice have 3 children; daughter Michelle Jarvis (Ken), granddaughter Rebecca and grandson Kyle of Fort McMurray, Alberta; son Clay (Suzanne) of Cold Lake, Alberta; son Bob (Loreen), grandson Zach of Courtenay, BC. Norm loved his grandson Zach very much.

Special thanks to Glacier View Lodge (Special Care Unit) staff for their loving care they gave Norm and for their support to me.

SPROUT, Ron

Jan 7, 1933 – Jan 22, 2015

Ron Sprout, of Sayward BC, passed away peacefully at his family’s home on January 22, 2015. Ron and Frances (Bebe) moved to the Sayward Valley in 1956.

Ron from the very start fell in love with Sayward and did not want to live anywhere else. His community spirit was evident in everything he did from Mayor, working with the Fish and Game Club, volunteering for the May Day celebrations, helping put on Talent Night, being Santa for many years going around the village of Sayward getting the kids excited, growing pumpkins along his road and then giving them to the neighbours kids. The one thing he loved more than anything else though was Oscar Daze. He was a coach, umpire and an ambassador for the local ball tournament. He would spend hours walking around the ball park talking to the people who came. He made his last appearance at Oscar Daze this past summer where the local residents honoured him for his contributions over the years.

Ron is survived by his wife Bebe, daughters Shelley (Kerry) and Tracey (Lorne) his son Peter (Karen). He had 5 grandchildren Christopher, Nicole, Jennifer, Stephanie and Matthew, 3 great-grandchildren Mattea, Chayce and Linden.

The family would like to give a special thanks to his granddaughter Stephanie for making it possible to bring dad home where he could be with his family at the end.

There will be a celebration of life for Ron at the Eagles Hall in Campbell River on March 28th, 2015 from 1 to 4 pm.

The Comox Valley Glacier Kings’ 2014-15 Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League season is over.

The Yetis fell 9-3 to the Campbell River Storm on March 13 in Campbell River in Game 5 of their bestof-seven playoff semifinal series, with the Storm taking the series 4-1.

Friday the 13th wasn’t playing out that badly for the G-Kings as the North Division second place team was tied with the North champ 2-2 early in the second period.

But the Storm scored the next seven goals, including six on the power play, to pull away and punch their ticket to the VIJHL playoff championship against the Victoria Cougars.

The Storm went 6-for-10 with the man advantage while the Yetis were 1-for10. C.R. held a 44-35 shots on goal advantage with first star Riley Welyk the winning goalie.

Zachary Straza started in goal for Comox Valley and played 43 minutes, stopping 28 of 36 shots before giving way to Liam Young.

Austin McNeil, Franco Colapaolo and Grant Iles tallied for the Glacier Kings.

After dropping their first two games at the B.C. Senior Boys 3A Basketball Championships, the Isfeld Ice bounced back to win their final two games and finish 13th at the 16-team event, held March 11-14 in Langley.

Wednesday afternoon they fell 62-49 to Charles Hays in their opener. Davis Malton led the Ice with 15 points while Noah Kaefer had 12 and Nic Xylinas added 11.

Thursday morning, Isfeld dropped a 77-58 decision to McNair. Kaefer and Xylinas both had game-high 28-point performances.

On Friday night the Ice defeated L.V. Rogers 60-52 and they finished up on Saturday with a 55-42 win over Dawson Creek.

Fleetwood Park defeated Charles Tupper 73-65 to take top with Charles Hays knocking off R.A. McMath to place third.

Last Wednesday night in Campbell River, the Glacier Kings built a 3-0 lead by the mid-way mark of the second period but couldn’t hold on, losing 4-3 in double overtime.

The G-Kings opened the scoring on March 11 with second star Derian Hamilton rippling the mesh at 18:01 on the power play.

Colton St. John made it 2-0 at 5:33 of the second, then set up Iles for the Yetis’ third goal at 13:36.

Cue Josiah Friesen, who single-handedly ruined the Glacier Kings’ hopes of tying the series.

All Friesen did was score four straight goals. He pulled his team to within one with tallies at 13:44 and 18:42 of the second, then evened the count at 3-3 with a powerplay marker just 37 seconds into the third period.

Friesen then clinched his first star award by netting the winner, unassisted, at 1:41 of the second OT session.

The Storm outshot the Glacier Kings 42-29 with Welyk picking up the win in relief of starting netminder Jesse Michel, who left with the score 2-0. Straza took the loss. Both teams were 1-for-5 with the man advantage.

Dragon boat teams ready for action Submitted The Comox Valley Blazing Paddles women’s dragon boat team is looking for a few dedicated women of any age to join them on their competitive team.

“We’re a group of positive people with an appetite for paddling, fun, and competition,” a team member said.

“If you enjoy fitness and are able to commit to paddling twice a week as well as attending a few competitions a year then we are the team for you!

We paddle Wednesdays from 4:30- 5:30 p.m. and Sundays 10-11 a.m.”

Dragon boat racing is one of the fastest growing water-

sports in the world today, and yet it has been around for over 2,000 years. Dragon boat racing evolved from the original “Waking the Dragon” rituals celebrated by many Asian cultures.

Traditionally celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, the first races were meant to awaken the hibernating dragon. The people needed to appease the spirit of the dragon, to avoid bad luck and to get the rains they needed to ensure a good crop for the year.

Triathlon clinic underway today For those aspiring to take on a triathlon of any distance this year, there is good news. PACE Multisport, a new multisport coaching business in the Comox Valley, is launching an Adult and Youth Triathlon Clinic starting Tuesday, March 17 at the Sports Centre.

It will be an eightweek clinic providing participants with swim, bike and run coaching, transition and nutrition tips and a basic training plan.

“You don’t have to have any background in triathlon or the three events of swim, bike or run in order to participate in the clinic,” says Leanne Gray, one of the two nationally certified coaches partnering to form PACE Multisport.

The team of coaches will help everyone train and prepare for a triathlon regardless of experience or age. With the sport of triathlon growing, there are more and more events of various distances to try out on the Island.

“It really is a sport for everyone, youth, adults of all ages can get into it for the first time,” commented Lynda Magor, Gray’s partner in this new business venture.

The pair of coaches have raced at all distances of triathlon and between them have 20 years of experience in the sport. Magor has represented Canada at numerous world triathlon championships.

“We are passionate about triathlon and sharing our experiences with others to help them on their way to

enjoying this great lifestyle sport,” said Gray.
