SENIORS CARE

P3s questioned BY SUSAN ZIELINSKI ADVOCATE STAFF Albertans need to ask why the province is continuing to give away taxpayers’ dollars to companies to build and run seniors care facilities, says Public Interest Alberta. On Thursday, the province announced $180 million in Affordable Supportive Living Initiative grants to companies to create 2,612 continuing care spaces in 31 seniors housing projects in 18 communities across Alberta. Red Deer is getting 180 spaces, including 60 longterm care beds at Covenant Care Villa Marie and 120 beds (likely supportive living Level 4 beds) to be built by H&H Total Care Services Inc. for the new facility called The Hamlets of Red Deer. Covenant Care received a $5.1-million grant for its $13-million addition. Grant information for H&H was not available. “We are fundamentally subsidizing the creation and expansion of a corporately-run seniors care system. If these are our schools, our hospitals, I think people would be much more up in arms,” said Bill Moore Kilgannon, executive director of Public Interest Alberta. “Why should we be pouring millions of taxpayers’ dollars into these private corporations to run these facilities?”

CCAA VOLLEYBALL NATIONALS

Red Deer College Queens women’s volleyball coach Talbot Walton spent the entire season doing his best to avoid discussions about the potential to win back-to-back national championships. QUEENS REIGN SUPREME Now he has no B1 choice. The Queens won their second consecutive Canadian Colleges Athletic Association championship on Saturday, beating the previously undefeated FX Garneau Elans of Quebec City 3-2 (25-22, 19-25, 22-25, 26-24, 15-13) in Longeueil, Que. “That first one we just didn’t know what to expect, we didn’t know if we were ever capable of doing it, but we made it happen,” said Queens head coach Talbot Walton. “This year we had that capacity and understanding that it was doable and always just found a way to win ... “I think it’s tough to win once and very difficult, almost impossible, to win two in a row anymore. I think with the change over we had, to win two in a row, wow, that’s a testament for what we have as a group of athletes and people.”

After winning their first national championship in 30 years last season, the Queens had a lot of work to get back to the top of the mountain this year. They lost their two star powers in Brooke Sutter and allCanadian and tournament MVP Amber Adolf, and then they had a host of injuries they had to work through to their replacements. Despite a No. 1 ranking in the CCAA for much of the year and a 22-2 record, they were far from dominating, winning on defence, experience and guile. As they started to get healthy at the end of the season, they suddenly looked the part of defending national champion. They hit their stride at provincials, beat the Grande Prairie Regional College Wolves in the gold medal game, and then continued to roll at nationals, beating the host Lynx d’Édouard-Montpetit and Grande Prairie to get back to the gold medal game. The final against FX Garneau was an instant classic, with each set tightly contested with the fifth going the full distance.

Kink, lust, sex, desire, passion and fun were themes that loomed large over the 10th Taboo ... Naughty by nice sex show in Red Deer over the weekend. Kevin Blackburn, managing partner of Canwest Productions Inc. who organized the event, anticipated about 10,000 visitors would come through the doors at the Stockmen’s Pavilion at Westerner Park over the weekend. Those who came through were treated to close to 80 exhibitors ranging from lingerie to limousines to sex toys to body paint. Compared to shows in Calgary and Edmonton that draw close to 25,000 and in Vancouver, which draws about 35,000, Red Deer gets a sizable turnout. “Girls read the book, watch the movie and then they’ll walk up to a booth and say ‘I want to try this,’” said Blackburn, referencing the popularity of 50 Shades of Grey. In one corner of the show is the Taboo Dungeon, operated by Akasha Ravencrest of Ravencrest Manor. Set up with different types of bondage, discipline and sadomasochism demonstrations were offered to anyone who wanted to give it a try. “Kink is interesting,” said Ravencrest. “It was so crowded in here, we had to keep everybody back. When demonstrations were going on, people wanted to crowd in and get close. There are lots of people coming in and wanting to try it out and see what it feels like and what the attraction is.” Drag queen Terri Stevens hosted the event, mixing in her own sassy comedy with giveaways and musical numbers. Seminars ranged in topics from swinging to romancing to adding a little electricity to the bedroom. Some stars of the adult entertainment industry also made an appearance in Red Deer including Holli and Michael, stars of the Playboy TV series Swing, and Tori Black, an adult film star. Michael Nault, CEO of Ace Angels International, ran a body painting booth at the show. He’s been coming to Red Deer for every Taboo show with what he calls his liberating and an expression of freedom. “Red Deer is our hottest city,” said Nault. “When the Taboo show comes, people come out of the woodwork and our artists love to come to Red Deer.” Even early in the day Saturday, people were enthusiastic about being painted. “People have a lot of fun here,” said Blackburn. mcrawford@reddeeradvocate.com
